CatholicLifeHasBeenPurifiedand Deepened...ButisStillRemote FromVitalSocio-EconomicProblems

ThereligiousdivisionsoftheBritishMinistryofInformationrecently publishedareporttotheeffectthat, withthesigningatWashingtonofthe jointpactbetweenthetwenty-six UnitedNations,morethanonehundredandthirtymillionCatholicswere rangedagainstthe"Axis"Powers.Of thisnumber,fifty-sixmillionsbelong totheBritishEmpireandtheUnited Statesandherpossessions.Thefiguresdidnotincludethemillionsof CatholicsinFranceorhercolonies.

WhenIfirstreadthereport,two questionsflashedintomymind.What influencedidtheseonehundredand thirtymillionCatholicsexertinthe modernworldduringthepasttwentyfiveyears?Whatistheirinfluence to-day?Ifwestudythesequestions withtheutmostrealism,wemustconcludethattheinfluenceoftheseone hundredandthirtymillionCatholics waspracticallynegligibleinthepast andisalmostnegligibleto-day, Agreatdealhasbeenwrittenin ourtimeabouttheallegedfailureof Christianity.Thisishighlyinaccurate.Christianityhasnotfailedand cannotfail.Whatisbeyondargument,however,isthatfartoomany CatholicshavenotfollowedtheteachingsandpreceptsofChristianity.The presentwaremphasisesthisfailurein ratherbrutalfashion.IftheindividualandcollectiveinfluenceofCatholicsineverycountryhadbeenstrong, thiswarwouldnothaveoccurred,Let usnotmakethestupidmistakeof blamingeverythingonHitler,MussoliniandtheMikado.Thiswarisa judgmentuponthemajorityofCatholicseverywhere,ajudgmentuponour smugnessandsupineness,ajudgment

uponourindifferencetothePapalappealforCatholicAction,ajudgment uponourwholeattitudetowardsthe lostsheepofChristendom.

Thiswarisbeingfoughtto-daywithoutmuchregardforChristianprinciplesbecausebothBritainandthe UnitedStates,tosaynothingofSoviet Russia,areverylargelymaterialistic inoutlook.

WHATOFTHEFUTURE?

Whatofthefuture?Thecrisisthat liesbehindallothercrisesisthis:Can ChristiansinspireandreorderourcivilisationonceagainorwillChristiansbe sopersecutedandoutlawedthatthey willbecompelledtoseekrefugea secondtimeinthecatacombs?The supremelyimportantquestionis whetherChristians,evenatthislate hour,canstillsavetheworld?

Itisobviousthatwinningthewar willnotautomaticallypreparetheway forthere-establishmentofChristian values.Somethingmoreisneeded.A Christianapostolateisbadlyneedednow.Everyeffortmustbemadeto convincethemodernworldthatit musteithertakeChristianityseriously orperish.Attheverybeginningof thisvastmovementofrenewaland regeneration,however,Christiansmust firstexplainwhytheyfailedtoexercisemuchinfluenceinthepast,examinetheirownshortcomings,and pointoutwhatstepstheyaretaking to-daytoimproveupontheirpreviousperformance.Untilthisisdone, themodernworldwillremaincoldand scepticalaboutChristianity-theone last,greathopeofmankind.

Therearetwobasicreasonswhy millionsofChristiansinallpartsof

Catholicshavebeencontent toremainonlyapotentialforce inthepoliticalorder

theworldhavefailednotablytoaffect thesuicidaldirectiontheworldhas taken.Firstofall,Christianityhas beenthevictimofagiganticconspiracy.Duringthepastfourorfive hundredyears,andcontinuingevenup tothepresenthour,aruthlesscampaignwascarriedontosabotageand destroyChristianinfluenceswherever found--ingovernment,ineducation, inthepress,inindustryandagriculture,inthevarioustradesandprofessions,intheartsandsciences,inpublicaswellasprivatelife.Weare nowreapingthewhirlwind,That muchisobvious.Butweshouldnot overlookthefailuresandshortcomings ofChristiansthemselves.Itiswith thislatterandmorebafflingphaseof theproblemthatIamprincipally concerned.

HEARTOFTHEMYSTERY.

Wemustsomehowaccountforthe contrastbetweentheextraordinaryrevivalthathastakenplacewithinthe Churchinrecenttimesandtheparalleldisintegrationofwesterncivilisation.Wemustgototheheartofthe mysteryofhowtheChurchmanifested renewedlifeandvigourattheprecise timethatwesterncivilisationpassed fromonegravecrisistoanevermore

seriouscrisisuntilto-dayitisinperil ofdeath,

EversincethereignofPiusIX,as MichaeldelaBedoyerehaspointedout inhis"ChristianCrisis,"theChurchhas grownbothinnumbersandfervour. Thestandardofprivatemoralityand ofecclesiasticalobservance,both amongtheclergyandthelaity,has probablyneverbeenhigher.Moreover,doctrinehasbeenpurifiedand deepened,whileteachinghasregained muchofthatbreadthanduniversality, particularlyinregardtosocio-economic problems,whichittendedtolose afterthewoundsoftheReformation. Wewouldnaturallyexpectworldconditionstoimprove.Farfromimproving,theygrewsteadilyworse.

OPPOSINGFORCES.

TheCatholicrevivalinthenineteenthandtwentiethcenturies,while accomplishingatremendousamount ofgood,wasnotstrongorpowerful enoughtochangetheswiftdirectionof events.Withintheshortspaceofa quarterofacenturythemodernworld driftedfromonetitanicwarinto anotherandevenmoreterribleand devastatingworldconflict.Theonly reasonableexplanationforthefailure

R.:WhenIfirstsoughttobecomea Catholic,theCatholicChurch,afterI hadsubmittedtomanyweeksofinstruction,offeredtograntmetheprivilegeofallowingmetobereceivedinto theChurch.AndIavailedmyselfof thatoffer,becauseIknewthattheCatholicreligionitselfofferedtheonly 'completelytrueformoftheChristian religiontobefoundinthisworld. Lateron,afterIhadbecomeaCatholic,andwhenIdesiredtoconsecrate mylifeentirelytoGod,andtowork forthespiritualgoodofothers,the CatholicChurchofferedmetheopportunityofjoiningoneofherreligious Orders.Ididso,takingthevowsof poverty,chastity,andobedience;thus renouncingallprospectsofpersonalremunerationintheformofmoney,the consolationofearthlyaffectionsand marriage,andtherightofself-managementinthechoiceofmyactivities.It wouldbedifficulttofindanyulterior motivesinsucharenunciationofearthlygoods,humanaffections,andone's ownself-will.And,asamatterof fact,eventhewriteroftheprecious articleyousendmeconfessesthathe isbaffled.

VERDICTOFPREJUDICE.

bythetinselbarelydisguisingthe shoddyinsincerityofaso-calledreligion.Threepossiblepositions.therefore,arise.EitherIamnotintelligent,or,grantedmyintelligence,Iam nothonest,andjoinedanobviously falsereligionfortheulteriormotiveof whatIcouldgetoutofitinthisworld. Orelsethewriterhimselfismistaken inhisideasoftheCatholicreligion. Now,thewriterhimselfrefusestoadmitthatIamunintelligent;sothat's ruledout.Andanyprospectsof earthlygainareruledoutbythefact thatthevowsofpoverty,chastity,and obedienceinareligiousOrdersimply excludesuchprospects.Itremains thatthedescriptionoftheCatholicreligionas"tinselbarelydisguising shoddyinsincerity"isdictatedbyignoranceofthatreligion,andblindprejudiceagainstit.

R.:Thebookisundoubtedlycalculatedtoprovokediscussion,butthere isnoneedforthediscussiontoget heated.

Butthegeneralimpressionamongst undiscerningreaderswhobelievewhatevertheyseeinprintwouldbethatthe priestdeservingoftheiradmirationis arareandabnormalspecimen,whilst themajorityofpriestsarequeercranks withlittlezealforsouls,andlesscharitytowardstheirfellowmen.Such characterisationisnottruetolife,and spoilsthenovel.

Agreatdealofeverybody'stime, nottomentionlife,isspentinsaying something.Wesaynotonlybyway ofutterance,butalsobywayofinscription.Wesaythingsalsoinvariouscapacities.

AlittlebookletofCatholicsayings whichIhavejustbeenreadingsuggeststhequestionwhetherwearein thehabitofsayinganythinginthe courseofournormalbusinessinour capacityofCatholics.Inthiscapacityweare,andcontinuetofunction,all thetime,forthecapacityiscontinuous.

Amanmaybeacookorcarteror clerkorcaptainorcolonel,butthe strictfunctioningoftheseoccupations islimitedtoacertainspaceoftime intheday.Butamandoesnotshut upshopasaCatholicmanlocksup deskanddismissesthesquadandis donefortheday.

Forthisreasononeshouldexpect Catholicsayingstobemintedsomany thousandsperminute.Butthisapparentlyisnotthecase.Eventhough therearememorableCatholicsayings numerousenoughtofill,notabooklet, butalibraryofbulkyvolumes,itis noteasytohitoffasentencethathas thestuffofpermanenceinit.

Asaying,spokenorwritten,mustbe distinguishedfromothervarietiesof expressionalbrevityorpungencyor compactness.Itisnotaproverb, whichisgenerallyofnoknownauthorship,andistooformalortoocoldly unemotionalbecauseofitscrystallised settermsmeasuredbyayard-stick.It isnotamaximeither,becausea maximalsoisacopy-bookheadline andissimilarlysocompleteinitself thatitverynearlysoundsmechanical.

Theoldertimespokeof"saws";the sawisoutoffashionandcutsnoice withpeopleinthesedays.TheAmericanshaveinventedanewthing,the 'wisecrack";theycankeepit.And asfortheterribleapophthegm,itisso nearlyunspellableandsomuchmore unpronounceablethatnobodyneedbe blamed,ifhedidcaretobespeaking apophthegmatically.

Asayingisnothinglikethese.A sayingispersonalandcolouredwith -personality.Itcanbecharacteristic;itcanappealbyitswitorwisdom, beautyofthoughtorexpression,sincerityorhumanity;itcanfitintothe experienceofthelistenerandsethim thinkinginhisownperson.Notonly itcan,butitalsodoes,thesethings.

Asayingtellsussomethingalioof thesayer.Asayingneedstobesomethingworthsaying,andremembering, andreiterating,Storiesandthings arereportedorrepeated;sayingsare quoted,themostcomplimentaryform ofrepetition.

Asayingdoesnotexhaustthetopic. Itisonlyabriefcasualilluminationof thesomeaspectofit.Ithasnot thestrictcompletionofmaximsor proverbs.Generallybeforeandafter whatisrememberedasasaying,agood lotmorehasalsobeensaid.Thishas beendropped.

Politiciansanddemagogues(and publicperils)sometimescomplain thattheirvulgariansentenceshave beentakenoutoftheircontextsand madetoconveyasensetheydidnot mean.Asayingcanbe,andis,generallyliftedoutofitscontext;and thereisnodangeroffalseimpressionsormisinterpretation.Above all,asayingmustbesaid.Itcannotgowithoutsaying.

LetallthesefadeoutbeforetheCaPudicsaying.BehindtheCatholic

sayingisacompletetheoryofthe Universe,awholecreedandanentirephilosophy.Howeversmallits range,ithasthepulseofavigorous life.TheCatholicsayingisvitaland vitalisingitsbackgroundistheliving Faithwhichneverdies.Itmaybe aspark,butbehinditisthetotalkineticenergyofeternaltruth,Itradiatesthevirtuesofareligionofjoyand comfort,loveandcharity,sunshineand light.

To-day,withtheworldinchaosand somuchofoursocialsystemtottering, itiswellthatweshouldpauseawhile toconsidertheconditionswhichhave resultedinsuchtragicconfusion.The veryfactthathereinourownfaircity ofPerththeimmoralityofouryoung peoplehascausedtocomeintobeing aViceSquad,issurelyanindictment againsttheGodlessmaterialismofour day.Alcoholicabusesandimmorality,whiletheymaybeameliorated, canneverbeovercomebylegislation andpoliceactivity.Theircauseslie toodeepforthis.Itiseducationto thefullresponsibilitiestowardsGod andourimmortalsoulsthatisnecessary.Nexttoreligioustraining,educationforleisureisasimportantas vocationalguidance,sothatanymovementwhichcatersforthesocialand moraleducationofyouthshouldhave ourfullestsupport.

Politically,also,thereismuchchaotic thinking,particularlyamongthose whoarewilfullytakingadvantageof theheroicstrugglesofourRussianAlliestoadvancetheirownpolitical theories.Itisastrangethingthat mostofthosenowloudestintheir criesfor"AidtoRussia"arethevery personswho,untilRussiawasattackedinJune,1941,triedbyeverymeans intheirpowertosabotagethewar effortofAustraliaandGreatBritain, whowithonlyhercoloniestoaidher, waslefttofacetheNazimenacefor somanymonths.

InthemtheepicofDunkirkandthe BattleforBritainstirrednosparkof feeling,buttothemostofuswhose dearweresufferingprivations,agony anddeathinthevarioustheatresof war,thestrugglehadagrimand deadlysignificance.Nowtothem thecharacterofthewarhaschanged. Itisnolongeran"imperialistwarin whichtheBritishEmpireisgettingits deserts,"butawarforfreedom.Typicaloftheinsincerityofmostofthe organisationswhichhidetheirrealaim andobjectsundersuchsympathycatchingtitlesas"AidtoRussia,"was therecentlydisclosedbalancesheetof theN.S.W."AidtoRussia"Committee.Accordingtofiguresfurnishedto ineN.S.W.Government,andpublishedinthe"Bulletin,"ofAugust12 last,itwasdisclosedthatof£2,436raisedbypublicsubscriptionwiththe laudableobjectofhelpingRussia,only £18wenttotheMedicalAidFund. Thebalance,amere£2,418,wasswallowedupinsalaries(£333),propagationandliterature(11,0501,dinners andsocialfunctions(04); incidental expenses,suchasprinting,travelling andtelephone(£6111,whileitisinter-

estingtonotethatoffundscollected toaidRussia,£20wasspentintransportingKatherineSusannahPritchard fromW.A.toattendaconference.Such authenticateddisclosures,coupledwith theeverincreasingactivitiesofvariousso-calledculturalgroupsinPerth, shouldmakeuswaryofacceptingat theirfacevaluesuchorganisations.

Noonewillquestionthegivingof medicalaidtoRussia,butwhynotdo itthroughtherecognisedchannels,suchastheRedCrossSociety,which. byitsveryinternationalcharacter,is abletodomuchmoreeffectivework thananysmallgroupofindividualsno matterhowsincereandwellmeaning. ThedefenceofStalingradisanepic cfthewar,worthytostandbeside DunkirkandRuinRidge,butnoorganisationsshouldbepermittedto makepoliticalcapitaloutoftheblood andtearsofitsheroicdefenders.

Catholicsareoftenaccusedofbeing opposedtoCommunism,whileitis saidthatCommunismisthehighest formofChristianity.Thisisentirely false.TheCatholicChurchcontains manyexamplesoftrueCommunism basedonChristianity,nottheatheisticCommunismwithitsdestructive underminingtacticsanddoubledealingasweknowofitsadherentsin Australia.IntheChurchwehave thosenoblebandsofmenandwomen whogivealltheyhavetothosein needanddevotetheirlivestothepoor andsuffering.

Ineverycommunity,noticethenumberofCatholicinstitutionswhereour religiousOrderstoilceaselesslytoease theburdenofsufferinghumanity.The LittleSisterofthePoorwithherbasketonherarmasshebegsfromdoor todoor,notforherselfbutforher agedcharges;theSisteroftheGood Shepherd,guidingtheerringbackto thewayoftruth;theSisterofSt. JohnofGod,asshenursesthesick;the SisterofMercy,shelteringthefoundlingandtheorphaned:theChristian Brother,withthewaifandwayward ladatBoys'Town-thesearethetrue Communists,flourishingonthesoilof religion.TheirCommunismisvoluntary,andcombinedwiththeloveof Goddoesmoretorelievewantinthe truestsensethanthewholearmyof shoutingCommunistsofto-day.

"But,"saystheCommunist,"these religiousOrdersareworkingtorelieve suchconditions,nottodoawaywith them,asistheaimofCommunism. Hereagainouranswermustbethat onlyinareturntoChrist,andtheapplicationofhisteachingsissucha curetobefound.Christ,Himselfa Worker,hasleftusprinciples,upon whichifoursocietywerebased,the evilsofto-daywouldbewipedout.A turningtoChrististheonlysolution ofourills.Tothatendletusbe unitedinprayerthatHisKingdom willsoonbeestablishedontheearth.

Afterremarkingthat"Iwould ratherthatwehadmoreandbigger enemiesbecause,asitis,weonlyhave thekindofenemywhocandous good,"Dr.Heenansaid:

Thewelfareworkisdonenot,asin thecaseoftheCanadianForces, throughtheKnightsofColumbus,but throughtheRedCross.ThissuppliestoboththeArmyandNavy.The U.S.A.hasnoseparateAirForce,the ArmyandNavyeachhavingitsown airarm.

ITALIANSEAGERFOR PEACE

LooktothePope

PopePius'smoralinfluenceover theItalianpeopleisgreaterto-day thanatanytimeduringhispontificate, saysthe"CatholicTimes,"quoting the"NewYorkTimes."Copiesofhis speechesadvocatingpeaceandanew worldordersellbythehundredsof thousands.Thepopularinterestisso greatthatthe"OsservatoreRomano," withitsforciblylimitedcirculation,has beenfoundinadequate.

Toremedythissituation,anumber ofparishpriestsdecidedtopublisha sheettheycalledthe"ParoladelPapa" ("WordofthePope").Thissmall newspaper,whichappearsonlywhen thePopemakesaspeech,starteda yearagowithacirculationof5,000 copies.To-dayithasreachedacirculationofabout200,000,andisex pectedtotopthehalfmillionbefore theendoftheyear.

The"ParoladelPapa"issenttoparishprieststhroughoutItaly,whodistributeitamongthefaithful.Inthis waythemasseshavebeenkeptfully informedoftheactivityofthePope, andthefavourablereactionofthepeopletohisentreatiesforpeacehas giventheChurchanaccuratepicture ofthenationalfeelingtowardsthecon-

diet.Fascistleadersinsmallprovincialtownsandvillageshaveattempted tostopthedistributionofthisnewspaper.

TheVaticanhasrepeatedlyprotested againstarrestsofpriestsas"defeatists."Itconsideredthisanarbitrary actiononthepartoftheFascistGovernment,basingitsargumentsonthe 1929LateranTreaty.Theprotests, however,havegoneunheeded.This andotherinstancesofflagrantviolationsoftheConcordat,bothinItaly andGermany,areresponsibleforthe feelingto-dayamongtheItalianclergy thatonlyapeacedictatedbythevictoriousUnitedNationswillenablethe ChurchtocarryonitsmissionunimpededthroughouttheCatholicworld.

Thisbeliefisstrengthenedbythe knowledgeofthesatisfactorywayin whichtheChurchisthrivinginthe UnitedStates,ascontrastedwithconditionsinAxiscountries.

Theirsisonlyonestory;theirnarrativesareonlyfourversionsofthat singletranscendentalstory.Tothis endtheywerepredestined.Thereapparentlywereothers,notafewperhaps,notsofewpresumably,whoalso triedtheirhandatthesamestory.If thesemadetheattempt,thewinds haveblownthemallaway.

Theseothershavenotthatsealor hall-mark,certificationorguarantee thattheFour,andtheyalone,have. Theothers,ifsuchtherebe,existin precariousfashion;theyhavethe valueofcuriositiesandmuseum-pieces; theFour,andtheyalone,carryon theirage-longdutyofthetransmission ofthewordsofeternallife.

Thetextsofthefourhavesince calledintobeingwholelibrariesof comment,exegesis,interpretation,annotation,explanation.Andtheend ofthatlaboriousstoryandresearchon theirsacredScriptureisnotyet.For allthosetrueaidstothebetterunderstandingofthestoryoftheLordasthe Fourwroteit,letGodbethanked;but wemustpassthemby.OurfirstpreoccupationmustbewiththeFour. Evenifwegotothelibrariesweighted downbythemonumentallearningof theExegetes,thepurposeistoreturn totheFour.Theirsisthefirstword. Andtheirs,also,thelast.

UponthisinspiredworkoftheFour theenemiesofthestoryoftheLord havenothesitatedtomaketheirraid andonslaught.Fromtheearliesttimes theyalsoareinevidence.Mixedup withtherightexegesis,wrongones alsomadeabidforthedirectionof themindofthosewhoperusethestory oftheLord.Doubtersanddeniers, scepticsandinfidels,thesealsohave operatedontheworkoftheEvangelists.

Therearethosewhohaveerected theirpilesofsophistrytosaythat Matthewcouldnothavewrittenthe versionbearinghisname;thatit wasnotMarkbutapseudo-Mark whocompletedthenarrative;that itwasfictionnotfact,thatLuke wrote;thattheJohannineGospel wasnotaccordingtoJohnbutaccordingtoaJohntheElderorPresbyter.Otherdenialsorrefusalsof truthortraditionhavealsobeen madeinregardtootheraspectsof thefoursacredversionsoftheLord's story.

Atthemoment,theBridgetownCatholicsareveryproudoftheirparishchurch,becauseofthenewand charmingappearanceithasassumed asaresultoftheveryefficientjob donebythepainters.Itiscertainly somethingofwhichtheymaybejustly proud.Althoughthechiefenergiesof theworkmenweredirectedtotheexteriorofthechurch,theinteriorwas bynomeansneglected.Theporch,sanctuaryandsacristyhaveallbeencarefullypaintedandsuppliedwithnew appointments.Inthisrespect,specialattentionwasgiventothesanctuarywhich,besidesbeingpainted.has beenlaidoutinnewcarpetandlino., withgracefulpalmsaddingtothe beautyofthewhole.Wearevery proudofoursanctuary,andwhendecoratedwiththewonderfulflowersfor whichBridgetownisjustlyfamous,we feelasceneispresentedwhichforar tisticbeautyissecondtononeinany countryparishchurchofthediocese.

Thepraiseforrenewingthesanctuaryisinaverylargemeasuredueto oursplendidchildren.Theyworked withalltheirstrengthtorefurnishthe sanctuary,andbesidesdoingthisthey alsocontributedtotheC.W.O.asum ofmoneywhichearnedspecialpraise fromHisGrace,aswellastheadmirationofmanyothers.Theschooland hallhavealsobeenrepainted,andnow theconventiscominginforitsshare, sothatinalittlewhiletheentire groupofChurchbuildingswillhave beenrenewed,andtheworkwillbe aworthymemorialtotheenergyof theBridgetownCatholicworkers.

MotherEvangelistenteredtheConventinFremantlein1888,andwasprofessedin1891,whenshebeganher life'sworkofenlighteningthemind andelevatingthesoultoGod,awork whichwastospanhalfacenturyin youthandoldage,intimesofpeace andwar,ofprosperityanddepression, aworkwhichhadforitsaimatall timesandinallseasonsthegreater honourandgloryofGod,aworkwhich hascontributedtotherootinganddevelopmentofCatholicisminourWesternState,aworkforwhichthousands ofmenandwomenalloverWestern Australia,andwhoknowswhereelse, oweheradeepdebtofgratitude.The numberlessmessagesofcondolencereceivedbytheSistersinFremantleand Northambeareloquenttestimonyto theremembranceoftheoldstudents, manynowofmatureage.TheinfluenceofMotherEvangelistliveson intheheartsandmindsofthoseshe guidedduringtheirtenderyearsto theserviceofGodandhumanity.

Ingredients: 6mediumsizedpotatoes, 3eggs, 1onion.

Method:

Boilpotatoesandeggshard,chop theonionfine,andmakeadressingof 3tablespoonsoliveoil,2tablespoons winevinegar,1eventeaspoonsalt, andteaspoonpepper.Slicethe potatoesthinwhilewarm;slicethe eggsandmakealternatelylayersof each.Pourthedressing'betweenand sprinkleeachlayerwithchoppedonion andpepperandsalt.Setasideto coolatleastonehourbeforeserving. Whenready,coverwithboileddressingmadeasfollows:3eggs,1 tablespooneachofsaltandsugar,2tablespoonsoil,1scanttablespoonmustard,1cupcreamormilk,and1cup ofvinegar.Stirsalt,mustardand sugaruntilsmooth,addeggs,andbeat well,thenthevinegarandthemilk. Placethebowlinavesselofboiling water,andstirthedressinguntilit thickenslikesoftcustard.

AgreatDiocesanrallyofPromotorsoftheSocietyofthePropagationoftheFaithinSt.Mary'sCathedralbroughtthisyear's celebrationofMissionSundaytoaclose.HisGracetheArchbishoppresidedattheSolemnHighMassintheCathedralat11 o'clockinthemorning,andtheoccasionalsermonwaspreached byRev.FatherRafferty,DiocesanDirectoroftheSociety.The ceremonywasbroadcastthroughtheNationalStations.At3 o'clockintheafternoontheRallytookplaceintheCathedral,in thepresenceofHisGracetheArchbishop,whogavePontifical BenedictionaftertheDiocesanDirectorhadspokentotheassembledPromotorsfromthevariousparishes.

ThroughouttheArchdioceseMissionSundaywascelebrated byaGeneralCommunionofthefaithful,andbyExpositionofthe BlessedSacramentintheparishes.Sermonswerepreachedon theMissionsinallchurches,andaspecialdrivewasmadeforthe enrolmentofnewmembers.

Histeachings,whosepeoplehadcried outintheirburninghatred,"His bloodbeuponourheads,crucifyHim, crucifyHim."Nowtheywereexpectedtogobackandpreachthis sameGospeltothissamepeople.The worldtowhichtheyweretopreach theGospelwasforthemostpart tinderthedominionoftheRomanEmpire,towhosepaganismChristian teachingwasanaffront.Andbeyond thefringesoftheEmpiretherewere themanyandvariedfalsegods,to whomthepeoplehadforcenturies giventheirreverenceandadoration: theseweretobeoverthrownandthe CrossofChristplanted.Threecenturiesofpersecution,ofsuffering,tortureanddeathwasthepricethe Churchpaidforthisthefirstphase ofthecarryingoutofChrist'scommand-andshedidnotconsiderthe pricetoogreatnorthetasksodifficult thatitshouldbeabandoned.The preachingoftheGospelwasnoteasy inthebeginning-itwasnoteasynow -butChrist'scommandstillstands: "Goyeintothewholeworld,preach theGospeltoeverycreature,"And soitisthatnow,whileanothertragic pageoftheworld'shistoryisbeing writteninbloodandtears,thework ofChristmuststillgoon,forlike manyanotherbeforeit,thisgruesome chapterwilldrawtoitsclose.The warwillleaveitsmarkonmany things,butitwillnotrelievethe Churchofherobligationtopreachthe Gospeltoeverycreature.

SundayMassisfinishing.Thepriest hasjustbeguntogiveCommunionto someofthefaithful.Formanyof thosepresentMasshasended.They haveonlycometohearMass,andnow theywaitforthepriesttofinishthis additionalceremony:Communionin theireyesissomethingseparatefrom theMass;itisaSacramentthatisonly administeredfortheselectfew.But thisisnotso.Communionisthefulfilmentofthesacrificethattheyhave cometooffertoGodonthatday;it isGod'sreturngifttoallthosewho havemadetheirofferingtoHun throughthehandsofthepriest, Christ'srepresentativeatMass,ThereforetheSacrificeoftheMassand Communionarecloselyunited,We shallseethismoreclearlyifweexaminewhatweofferintheMass,and thewaythisofferingiscompletedby ourreceivingCommunion.

Themostobviousmeaningofthe Consecrationisthechangingofthe breadandwine,whichrepresentour offering,intotheBodyandBloodof Christ.Atthistimeweshouldtryto fixourwholeattentiononthemeaningofthisgreatact,rememberingthat beforewereceiveChristinHolyCommunion,weofferHimuptoGod;Our LadycouldofferChristtoGod,asshe didonCalvary,becauseHewasher Son:wecanofferHimtoGodbecause IlegivesHimselftousbychanging ourgiftsintoHisBodyandBlood.

ChristOurLordcomestousin Communionundertheappearanceof bread,ThatChristshouldcomeundersuchahumbleformissomething wehumanbeingscannotcomprehend, butinsohumblingHimselfOurLord makesusbetterunderstandthesupernaturallifeHehasmadeusforbycomparingittothefoodweneedinour lifeonearth-Hecomestousunder theappearancesofbreadtosignifythat Heisthefoodofoursouls.This toiiclhasanuniqueproperty.The materialfoodweeatischangedinto ourbodyandrestoresitslifeandenergy,butthefoodoftheEucharist doesmorethanthis,itcommunicates Christ'slifetous,WearemadesharersintheDivinelifeofChristina moreintimateway.

InHolyCommunionJesusworkson oursoul.Hedoesnotneedtobe nearusinordertoactonoursouls; butHerealisesthatwedesiresome signtoassureusthatHeisworkingin us:welongforsomethingmorethana word.LikethewomanintheGospelwhohadbeensufferingfroman issueofbloodfortwelveyears,and whosaidtoherself,"IfIshalltouch butHisgarment,Ishallbewhole.And immediatelythefountainofherblood wasdriedup,"we,too,longfor somethingmorethanawordtofeelassuredthatChristisworkinginus,The Eucharisticfoodisthatsign,Itis notameretouchofChrist'sownperson;itisHisbodilyandadorablepresenceinus.Again,inCommunion ChristmakesGod'sinfluencepenetrate moredeeplyintooursouls,forjustas firewillheatallthedifferentpartsof apieceofiron,soinCommunionwe areabsorbedbytheheatofGod'slove. AndwhenHisbodilypresenceinus ceases,weremainunitednotonlyto HisDivinity,butalso,thoughinadifferentway,toHisHumanity,for Christasmanneverceasestolivein

us,togivelife,light,andstrengthto oursoulsbytheinvisibleraysofHis grace.Hisinvitationtousis:"Abide inMeandIinyou.Asthebranch cannotbearfruitofitselfunlessit abideinthevine;soneithercanyou, unlessyouabideinMe."

SinceCommunionunitesusmoreintimatelytoChrist,itnecessarilyunites usmorecloselytoallHismembers: OurLady,theSaints,andtoallthose whoareinthestateofgrace;whether theybeourfriendsor,aswethink,our enemies,St.Paulexpressestheunion thatshouldexistbetweenallthose whopartakeoftheDivineFood:"The Breadwhichwebreak,isitnotfellowshipinthebodyofChrist?Wemany areonebody,forweallpartakeofthe onebread."TheMassalsoexpresses theunionthatshouldexistbetweenall themembersofGod'sChurch.AsCatholics,weshouldnotthinkofourselvesasindividualsatMasswhoareall makingaseparateofferingtoGod, butasmembersoftheUniversal Churchwhoofferallthatwehaveto GodthroughChrist,andwhojoinour offeringwithourneighbour's,forChrist andourneighbourasamemberofHis MysticalBody,theChurch,areinseparable.Thisunionisexpressed intheprayersoftheMass,whichremindsustothinkofourofferingas onewithallourfellowCatholics,tofeel withthe"CommunionofSaints"whom weasktojoininouroffering.We alsoofferasmembersofChrist'sfamily,andaskOurLord"toestablish ourdaysinHispeace,norsufferthat webecondemned,butrathercommand thatwebenumberedintheflockof Hiselect."Communion,too,helps ustokeepthisthoughtofunityin mind,forCommunionisnotapurely privateact,ithasasocialaspect.

SinceCommunioncompletesourofferingintheMass,itismeanttobereceivedbyallpresent.Theremaybe importantreasonsforreceivingitat anothertime,butweshouldalwaystry toreceiveatMass,asChristmeansus todo.Weneednotfearthatweshall loseourrespectforHolyCommunion byourfrequentreceptionofit.On thecontrary,ithasbeenfoundthat frequentCommunionincreasesone's reverenceanddesirefortheBlessed Eucharist.Wecanapplythewordsof theBookofEcclesiasticustotheBlessedEucharist:"Theythateatmeshall yethunger,andtheythatdrinkme shallyetthirst."Communion,then, isChrist'sbanquetforeachofus,He invitesallofuswhoarepresentat MasstoreceiveHim,becauseHehas beenpleasedwiththeofferingwe havemadeHimintheMas's,Donot rejecttheinvitationwithoutgood reason.Aslongaswearefreefrom allunconfessedmortalsinandhavea realdesiretoreceiveOurLord,we shouldgotoCommunion.Weneed God'sgracetohelpusovercomeour dailytemptations,andthereisnobetterwayoffortifyingourselvesagainst themthanbyreceivingCommunion frequently.PopePiusXstressesthis pointinadecreeof1905,whenadvocatingpeopletogotodailyCommunion:"The'chiefreason'whyChris. tiansshouldcommunicate'frequently andevendaily'isthatthey'mayderivestrengthtoresisttheirsensual passions andavoidthosegraver sinstowhit'humanfrailtyisliable."

AloysiusGonzagawas,bornonMarch 91568,inCastiglione,hisfather's realm,alittletownawaytothenorth ofItaly,Hewasbornanobleman, theheirtohisfather'stitleandestates.NowthisItalianaristocratic societyintowhichStAloysiuscame wasextremelyimmoral.Sinningwas bynomeanssomethinguncommon, ratheritwasalmosttherage.Itwas withsin,thenthattheboyhadto fight.

Yetthesaintwasnotanasceticfrom hiscradle.Asaboyhelovedfine sightsandsport.Hecouldthoroughly enjoywatchingahorserace,andbe nonethelessthrilledbythemagniticenceofaGrandDuchess'funeral,He wrote(1578)withboyishdelightthat hehadspentthedaywithDonJohn "cookingallsortsofthings."

Theresultsofthisshort-sightedattitude,thusfar,havebeendisastrous bothforthemodernworldandforthe i:hurchinparticularcountries.

Wemustgiveanexplanationforthe riseofNazisminGermany,whichcontainedsuchalargepercentageofCatholics,andforthetragiccollapseof France,traditionallyreferredtoas "thefirst-borndaughteroftheChurch." Weselectthesetwocountriesastypicalexamplesofadeplorableanddangerousconditionwhichpersistsinthe UnitedStatesto-dayandwhichmust beremediedbyallmeansattheearliestpossiblemoment.

INPRE-HITLERGERMANY.

Letusputaside,attheveryoutset,theconvenientnotionthatGermanCatholicisminthepre-Hitlerera was,toallintentsandpurposes,bankrupt.Itwouldbeaverysimplemattertosaythatthedechristianisationof Germanyhasgonesofarthatonlya fewsmoulderingembersofaonce mightyfaithremained.IftheChurch inGermanywasmoribundanddecrepit,ifreligiouszealwasaboutto expire,ifoneofthegreatestbulwarks againsttyrannyandoppressionhadalmostceasedtoexist,thencertainly Hitler'srisetosupremepowercanbe moreeasilyunderstoodandaccounted for.Ifweadoptthisinterpretation,

GermanCatholicsarepracticallyabsolvedfromresponsibilityinthematter.Butthereisoneseriousobjectiontothisclever,face-savingexplanation:Itisnottrue.

MichaelCardinalvonFaulhaber,the heroicArchbishopofMunich,was certainlynottheproductofadecadentChurch,NeitherwereKarl Adam,HeinrichBruning,Romano Guardini,GertrudevonLeFort,Peter WustorKarlPfleger.Theabbeyof Maria-Laach,nearAndernach,andthe smallBavariantownofOberammergauwereworld-famous.TheCatholic pressandtheCatholiceducationalsysteminGermany,priortotheadvent ofHitler,wereamongthebestinEurope.Youthgroupswereparticularlywellorganised.Religiousandculturalorganisationsofallkindsflourished.

CHURCHWASDETACHED.

Itmustbeadmited,however,that theChurchinGermany,forallitsvigorouslife,wasisolated,detachedand remotefromtherestofthenation.It failedtoexertaconstantandeffective influenceeitherupontheleadersof theReichoruponthemasses.CatholicAction,asinsomanyother countries,wasveryeffectivewithinthe Church,butnotsufficientlyeffective outsidetheChurch.Onlyunder thesecircumstanceswasitpossiblefor Hitlertowinpopularsupportforhis detestableprogramme,

ConsiderFrance.Agreatmany badlyinformedpeopleareoftheopinionthatFrancewashopelesslydecadentandthatFrenchCatholicism, asinGermany,wasbankrupt.On thissuppositionthefrightfulshockof defeatwasnecessarytobringthe Frenchpeopletotheirsenses.Itis evenassertedinsomequarters,that VichyFranceisresponsibleforaCatholicrevival.Thefactofthematteristhatitwasthefruitsofavery long-standingCatholicrevivalwhich madeitpossibleforVichy,according toarecent"Blackfriars-article,found, readytohand,agreatbodyofyoung peoplewhoseoneaimisservice,whose watchwordisgenerosity,andwhoare readytomakeallthesacrificesnecessarytohelptheirsufferingfellow countrymen.AndwhenVichytalked ofmoral"redressment,"religiousrevival,spiritofsacrificeandtherest, theseyoungpeoplerecognisedwords idwhichtheyalreadyknewthemeaning.

NOTDECADENT.

ThelateCardinalVerdier,thealert andkindlyArchbishopofParis,was certainlynottheproductofadecadentChurch.NeitherwerePaul Claudel,HenriGheon,EtienneGilson, M JacquesandRaissaMaritainorFrancoisMauriac.Nodefeatordisaster iirdebaclewasneededtoinitiatea movementofregeneration,TheJocistorganisationswere,perhaps,the mostpicturesquemanifestationsofthis movement,buttheywerebynomeans unique.Inhismostrecentwork, "France,MyCountry,"Maritainassertsthat,eversincethefirstWorld War,areligiousrenaissanceofthe mostgenuineandfruitfulkindwasoccurringinFrance,bothinthespiritual fieldandinthatofsocialservice."The FrenchCatholics,"hewrites,"hadassimilatedreligiouspersecution,profitingbyittoachievetheirindependence oftheState,toreviveinthemselves thesenseoftheGospel,toliveand

feelwiththepeople,tokindle,witha spiritanddashmeetforanyconquest, amostactiveapostolicflame."

AllpraisetoFrenchCatholicsfor whattheyachieved!Butifweare scrupulouslyhonest,wemusttakeinto considerationwhattheyleftundone. Inaconcludingchapterofhisbook evenMaritaincandidlyadmitsthat thereligiousrenaissanceinFrance, whilestronginthespiritualorder, touchedonlythefringeofapolitical renewalandthatinthedomainof thoughtonly."Thesadfact,"he says,"isthattheFrenchCatholicrevivalremainedonlyapotentialforce inthepoliticalorder,itsactionin thisorderhavingremaineddeplorably weak."Maritainmightalsohave addedthattheCatholicrevivaldid notreachthemasses,millionsofwhom wereirreligious.OnlyunderthesecircumstanceswasitpossibleforHitler towound,crushandhumiliateagreat nation.

ThehistoryoftheCatholicrevival followsthesamegeneralpatternin othercountries.ItalianCatholics,for example,allowedFascismtotakeroot inItaly,andto-daytheyhavenoalternativebuttobowtoit.Solong asCatholicsremainalooffromthe world,theycanonlylookforwardto theriseofanti-Christianideologies, thepersecutionoftheChurch,thedestructionorconfiscationofecclesiasticalproperty,andtheassassinationor

imprisonmentoftheirpriestsandnuns.

ThisisthelessonofEurope.Theprice ofafailuretoparticipateinCatholic Action,tostriveforthetriumphof theKingdomofChristinindividuals, inthefamily,andinsocietyatlarge, isindeedaterribleprice.

"ThedynamiteofChristianity," BaronessCatherinedeHueckonce said,"canout-dynamitethecombined forcesofCommunism,NazismandFascism,ifyouandIhavethecourageto lightthefuse.Itcanbelightedwith twokindofmatchesonly-loveand self-sacrifice'-twoidealsthatinour comfortable,complacentwayoflifewe haveforgottenthemeaningof. Let ustrytoremember-to-daywemustor weshallperish-thatwecannotgoto heaveninaFordV-Switharadioattached.Itcannotbedone.Letus wakeupbeforeitistoolate,andlight thatdynamiteofChristianitytoafull blaze!Weneeditslight:theworld needsitslight-nowmorethanever."

Howeverdarktheoutlook,despair wouldbethesupremelynon-Christian act.TheSwordoftheSpiritmovementinEnglandandtherecentlyorganisedProDeomovementinthe UnitedStatesandLatinAmericabears witnesstothefactthatnewprogrammesofactionarebeingcarriedon thathavefortheirprimarypurpose thepropagationofChristianideasand principlesinpaganandsecularcircles, Itisalreadyextremelylate.Butif Christiansineverylandwillonlybegin nowtodevotethemselvesheroically tothetaskofsavingtheworld,the future,despitethewar,holdscomfortingpromise.
