"InAustraliathewisdomofintroducingasystemofmarriageloans, whichwouldsecureowne.'Thipofsome propertyonmarriage,shouldholda strongappealforallHetthinkingpeoplewhohavethebestinterestsofAus. traliaatheart.Toooftenheavytributetohirepurchasecompaniesand mortgageeseatsupagreatportionof theincomeofyoungcouples,andisa sourceoftemptationtothemtolimit thesizeoftheirfamilies.Withthe majorityofouryoungmenunderarms, itisimperativethattheflowerofthe nation'smanhoodshouldbeableto marryandproducethenextgeneration. R.:I'mafraidImustquarrelwith thatstatementallalongtheline,Firstly,thepowersyouperceiveinnature arenotthe"omnipotence"ofGod, Theyarecreatedpowerswithwhich theuniverseisendowedbytheGod whomadeit.Inseeingthosepowers orforceswedonotseetheomnipotenceofGod,butaneffectofGod's omnipotence.Andweknowsimply thatGodmustbeomnipotentbyreasoningfromeffectstotheircause.

Inthepressofmaterialthings weareapttoforgetthatthiswar aroseprimarilyoutofspiritual disorders-onourpartaswellas thatofourenemies.Thisisof majorimportancetoremember, fortheendinviewofourfighting isnotmerevictorybutanew worldbegottenbyajustpeace. Althoughtheresponsetotheappeal forblooddonorshasbeengenerous,it isfeltthatmanymorepeoplewould beproudtogivethisservicetotheir

ThesixteenthcenturywasthegoldenageofSpanishexplorationanddiscovery.Followinginthewakeof Columbus,CortezcolonisedMexico, BalboasightedthePacificPizarro overranPeru,Almagroandothers Chili.
ThusitcameaboutthatinNovember,1567,AlvarezdeMendana,a youngnobleman,twenty-fiveyearsof age,setsailwithtwoshipsfromCallao,inPeru,tosearchtheWestern Oceanforanewcontinent, Theyhopedtosightlandinafew weeksbutthreemonthspassedaway wearilybeforetheysightedalong chainofmountains,whichtheytook tobeacontinent.FourFranciscan Fatherswentwiththeexpedition. Masswascelebratedashoreunder thegreattrees,fortheSpaniardswere Catholicsfirst,andtheirpriestssought tosavethesoulsoftheheathen,going inthevanguardwiththeexplorers. Thepointsofinterest,therivers,and theports,weregivennamesofsaints.

Atthenextstoppingplace,thePort oftheCross,inthelargeislandof Guadalcanal,thingsdidnotfareso well,OnAscensionDay,1568ten Spanishsailorsweremassacred,annihilatedeven,bythenatives;andvet thepeopledwellinginthisportionof theislandwere,inlateryears,among thefirsttoacceptChristianity. A thirdhaltwascalledbytheshipat aportwhichGallego,thepilot,recordsasbeingnarrowandmountainous.ItisthoughtthatthisdescriptionindicatesMakiraBay,whichwas namedbytheSpaniards,"ThePort oftheVisitationofOurLady."If itisthesameport,itwascalledby missionarieslaterinPortSteMarie Aplaceofdoloursfromthebeginning, ahomeoffeverandarrows.
TheSpaniards,withaviewtolearningthelanguage,incaseofareturn totheislands,seizedanative,hiswife andchildandanotheryounggirl. Mendanadidnotliketheproceedings, andconsentedonlywhenheleaned thatthecoupleweremanandwt Hegavethemfoodandclothesand, onbeinginstructed,theybecameardentChristians.Theydiedsometime afterwardsinthecityofLosReyos
(Lima),far,veryfar,fromtheirown littlemountainvillage,withitsnarrowbywaysandlow-browedhutsof leaves.TheywerethefirstChristiansoftheSolomons.Theexpeditionlastedtwenty-twoandahalf months.Thedateoftheirdeparture wasAugust8,1568.Theyleftwithoutascertainingthetrueextentof theresourcesoftheisland,which wereconsideredtohavetherichesof Solomoninhiddengold.They thoughttheyhadfoundtherealms whencethefleetsofHiramofTyre hadbroughtgoldandpreciouswoods forthebuildingofthetempleofJerusalem,sotheynamedthegroupafter KingSolomon.Itwasnot,however, theOphiroflegend,butagroupof poverty-stricken,unhealthyislands.

In1844,fouryearsatterthearrival ofthefirstshiploadsofcompany's emigrantsinNewZealand,ahuge VicariatewascreatedinMelanesiaand Micronesia(theislandsoftheblacks andthelittleislands),FatherEpalle, S.M.,waschosenasleader,appointed Vicar-Apostolic,andconsecratedBishop.HeleftLondonin1845with sevenFathersandsixlayBrothersfor Sydneyfromearlydaysthecentrefor SouthSeaIslandactivity.Herehe charteredaschoonerandsetoutfor theSolomons.Theyarrivedat Marau,oneoftheislandsofthegroup, onDecember2,1846,Finally,they putintotheBayofaThousandIslandsonIsabelIsland.Theirwelcomewasamassacre,BishopEpalle diedofwounds.HewasburiedinsecretontheisletofSt.GeorgeWorn bythesightofwoundsandbythesorrowofthathighdeath,thesurvivors turnedtheirprowtothePortofNotre Dame,or,astheycalledit,PortSte Marie,TheAdmiraltycallsitMakira Bay,ForthemitwasGethsemane. Thenativesregardedthemonlyasa sourceofgifts,giftswhichweretheir right.Thereisnowordforgratitude intheMaoritongue,noristhereany
suchamongthedialectsoftheSolomonIslands,Theylivedtoslay.A humanheadwastothemwhatapearl istoanoysterfisher, BishopColomb,S.M.,whohadbeen appointedCo-adjutortoBishopEpalle, heardofthedeathofhissuperiorwhen hewasactuallyonhiswaytothe islands.Itwasanundauntedheart hetookwithhim.Hewasasyetunconsecrated,and,findingtheAustralianBishopsabsent,hewentonto NewZealand,Hewasrobbedin NewCaledonia,andhewrites.still withthatfine-bladedsteadfastness: "Ifmyepiscopateissoheavyathing thetokensofmydignityareless pressing,Bishopwithoutcrossor mitre,Iamgoingplunderedofallthe veryshoestomyfeetandlinenfor mybodylentmeincharity.God beblessed!Imakenomurmurover it;rather,Irejoice,"Worsewasto follow.OnarrivalatMakirahe learnedthatfourdevotedpriestshad succumbed.Onediedofmarshfever, threeweremassacred.Ontheurgent representationsoftheship'scommander,hewithdrewthesurvivors.It wouldseemtohumaneyesthatthe missionwasafailure,but,byaninevitabledivineinversion,itwasasuccessintheeyesofGod, THERETURNOFTHEMISSIONARIES.
In1898,theMaristMissionariesreturnedtotheSolomons.Aprefecture atfirst,itbecameaVicariateApostolic
in1912-aVicariateof340,000square miles.Onanaverage,thedistance fromislandtoislandisfromthirty tofortymiles;andthereareshifty currentsandwild,racingtides. Travelintheinteriorbrushwoodfollowsweak-mindedcreeksthattwistin andout,
Addtothesedifficultiestheperversitiesofatropicalclimate,andsome notionoftheundertakingsmaybe gained.Arrowsoflightning,walls ofrain,thesearetoooftentheroad companionsofthemissionary.Crocodileslurkintherivers,fevercrouches inthemarshes-Thesceneryismagnificent;therearelittlecoralislands andshimmeringlagoons.Thesestrong rainsoftheirskeepthebrushwood denseandgreen.Itisnottoodense, howeverforbanditsandmurderers, whochooseitasascreenforwickedness.

Civilisationandtheirowndelectable gameofheadhuntinghavedecreased theirnumberswithamazingrapidity, ifthestatisticsofMendanameaneven halfoftheirstatementsconcerningthe populationinthesixteenthcentury. civilisation,Veryoftenthechangein clothing,theintroductionofEuropean vices,andtheindolencethatfollows thecessationofforaging,combineto preyuponthephysicalstrengthofthe aboriginals.Cannibalismundoubtedlyexistedinallitsforceatthetime ofMendana.Hiscarefulpilotrecordsinstancesofittoostarktobear repetition.Ithasdisappearedto-day fromtheislandofGuadalcanal,butit lingersoninMalaita,wherethetribes arefierceandbrutish.
Theirowncreed,suchasitwas,consistedofthefearratherthantheworshipoftheforcesofnature.Butthe sacrificestheymadetoGereparakeand VulunamaAso(sunandmoon) weremerelyintendedtoplacatethese gods,Strangelyenough,theyhada primitiveParadise,situatedforthe aristocratsinMarau,HelllayoppositeGuadalcanal,andalittlewayoff wasaplaceofcleansing,theequivalent ofourPurgatory.Sowolf-likewere thesetribesthatnobaptismswere givenforthreeyearsafterthefoundingofthenewmission,andnoadult baptismforfiveyears.Themissionariesonarrivingfoundthatthechildrendidnotlackintelligencebutthe Solomonesedreadedseparationfrom theirdevils.
ItwasontheislandofSura,or,as thenativessay,Dhura,thatthenew' comersdecidedforastation.Bya luckychance,theowner,amancalledKeating,sailedintothebayatthe sametimeasthemselves,andthepurchasewasmade.Itsveryname means"massacre,"acommonplaceof Solomoneseexistenceatthattime,It wasnotinhabitedbecausetheliving shunanislandofthedead.
ItwasBishopVidal,Vicar-Apostolic ofFiji,andAdministratoroftherecentlycreatedPrefectureApostolicof theBritishSolomons,whonegotiated thepurchase.Hebroughtwithhim tothesewild,blood-stainedislands threeFathers,onelayBrotherofthe SocietyofMarv,andnineCatholic nativesofFiji.Theybroughtfood, timber,andawhale-boat.AtGavatu wassaidthefirstMasssincethemassacreatMakirain1847.In1896,an Austrianscientificexpeditionhadbeen massacredassoonastheysetfooton Guadalcanal.ThemissionariesobtainedtemporaryhospitalityatVuleluaandthen.atAolathemomentous purchasetookplace.

In1912,theSolomonswerecreated aVicariate, MonsignorBertreux, whohadbeenappointedfirstVisitor andthenPrefectandthenBishop. diedin1918,afteralifeofunwearied service.Howmuchhissupervision meanttotheSolomonstheincidents oftheirprogressrevealmorethanany eulogy.Hetoiledthereforseventeenyears.
Thelatestfiguresavailable(1931) showthatthereareintheSolomons 6,306Catholicsand1,074catechumens, Thesefiguresaretheresultsofthirtyyearsofdevotedeffortinoneofthe mostunpromisingmissionfieldsinthe world.
