ToengenderthesevirtuestheJapanesehadtoschoolthemselvesinthe virtuesofcourage,self-denial,and rigidself-control.Themilitarycharacterof"Bushido"ledtoacontempt forthedignityofwomen,andindifferencetotheprivatelivesofmen.Filial piety,however,ordevotiontoparents, isinsistedupon.Infact,filialpiety andloyaltytotheEmperorarethereal moraldutiesthatfitone'scharacter forthecompanyofthegreatancestral spiritsofthenation.Itmustbeadmitted,ofcourse,thatmostoftheordinarynaturalvirtues,eventhoughnot formallyinculcatedbyShintoism,find theirpace,asarule,inthelivesofthe Japanesesimplyinvirtueofthefact thattheyarehumanbeingsandnotinhuman.
