VeryRev.Dr.L.J.Goody,Rector ofSt.Charles',welcomedthosepresentastherepresentativesofthe manythousandsofbenefactors throughouttheState.Hewelcomed alsohisbrotherpriests,whoseliaison workinconnectionwiththeSeminaryhadbeeninvaluable.HisGrace theArchbishopwouldforgivehimfor placinghimsecond,continuedDr. Goody,furheknewthatallhiscarefulplanningandallhismanyworries wouldhavecometonaughtwithout theArchbishop'sco-operation.HeregrettedtheabsenceofHisLordship

Bishop0Lullins,'butitwasimperativeforhimtoleavefortheEastern StatesbeforetheSeminaryopening. Afteroutliningtheprogrammefor theafternoon,Dr.Goodyexpressedhis heartfeltregretthatthis,oneofthe mostimportantoccasionswhichhad beenwitnessedbytheChurchinW.A., shouldtakeplaceintimesovershadowedbythecloudsandtheapproachingthunderofwarfare.One couldvisualisethemightycrowdthat wouldhavebeentherethatafternoon. Wartimecausedtheexpenditureof largesumsofmoney,andanything additionalwasnotonlyunwisebut 'impossible.Hencetheoriginal

schemefortheSeminarywas asideasimpracticable.Thenthepn sentpropertyturnedup,whereforthe expenditureofacomparativelysmall sum,theyhadbeenabletofoundthe Seminaryandtohousethesemis. arianssomagnificently.Clear:,Prcvidencewaswiththem.

HeprayedthatGodwouldgive growthandincrementtotheSeminaryfromitsmodest'beginnings,and wouldhelpitsSuperiorstoinspirethe youngstudentswiththatzealand goodwillthatwouldtidethemover therocksandshoalsontheirlongvcyagetothePriesthood.

Dr.Goodyconcludedbythanking theverymanybenefactorsoftheSeminary.Manyofthemostgenerous hadexplicitlywishedtoremainanonymous,andhenceitwouldbeinvidious tomentionanynames.Heinvited thosepresenttoinspecttheSeminary. andparticularlytheChapel.Every. thinghadbeengivenspontaneously andnotonesinglepersonhadbeen approachedindividuallyforagiftor contributionwhichhadnotbeer.alreadypromised.

Seminariesareoftwokinds,Major andMinor.MajorSeminariesconduct theirstudentstoordinationthrough thestudyofthreeyearsofPhilosophy andfouryearsofTheology.The Minor,orPreparatory,SeminarypreparesthestudentfortheMajorSeminary,andendswiththeacquisitionof theLeavingCertificateoritsequivalent.ThecourseoftheseMinorSeminariesvariesfromfourtosixyears, andconsequentlytheageoftheboy enteringwillvaryfromeleventofourteen. AtGuildforditisproposedtoestablishafour-yearcourse,sothatthe averageageofjuniorstudentswillbe 'betweenthirteenandfourteen.In additiontotheclassesinreligioussubjects,whichincludeLiturgyandGregorianChant,studentswillbeprepared

AfeatureoftheSeminaryistheboat shed,whichisbeingusedatpresent foraswimmingshed.Whenrowing boatsaresecuredstudentswillbeable tospendsomeoftheirleisurehours ontheGuildfordRiver,whichformsa goodexpanseofwaterasitflowspast theSeminary.

AFTERahundredyearsofeverexpandinglife,theChurchin thisStatehasatlastcomeofage.Thefirstheroicstrugglesofherinfancywerewatchedoverbytheoneortwo priestswho,involuntaryexile,followedtheircompatriotsoverthe tenthousandleaguesofseaofthelongvoyagefromEurope.

ThencametheSpanishmonks,whoseexampleofhardphysicalworkandfirmfaithdidsomuchtoestablishthefoundationsof CatholicityinWesternAustralia.Theirbuildingsandinstitutionsstillstandasatestimonytothefulfillmentoftheirfounder's maxim-"Oraetlabora"-"Prayandwork."

WiththeappointmentofthefirstBishopintheWest,in1845, theChurchmaybesaidtohavepassedfrominfancytothestateof adolescence;tohavebecome-notself-supporting-butmuchmore self-reliant.Thisself-relianceisportrayedinthephenomenaldevelopmentofallbranchesoftheChurch'sactivityinthepastsixty orseventyyears:ParishesandreligiousOrdersestablished. Churches,schools,conventsandinstitutionsspringingupevenin theremotestdistrictsthroughthegenerosityofthepeopleand undertheguidinghandsofthebishops.

ThefoundingoftheProvincialSeminaryofSt.Charles'marks thebeginningofafendingforourselves,ofahoped-forindependence.Anexperimentinindependencewhich,withoutthegrace ofGodindeed,mighteasilybeafailure.Butthistragedy,we aresure.willnevereventuate,becauseoftheassistance,both spiritualandtemporal,whichwehavelearnedbyexperiencetoexpectwithconfidencefromtheCatholicpeopleofWesternAustralia.

TheprojectoftheSeminary,alreadymootedbeforethewar, hascometofruitionnotwithstandingdifficultiesgreaterthanwhich itwouldbedifficulttoimagine.Thealmostfortuitousacquisition ofamagnificentsite,theunstintinghelpofalmosteveryCatholic inWesternAustralia,andthepresentationofapromisinggroup offoundationstudents,haveallcontributedtothegivingofagood starttotheSeminary.MayitpleaseAlmightyGodtohelpthe studentsthroughtheirlongyearsofpreparationforthepriesthood;toenlightentheseveralsuperiorsoftheSeminary,thatthey maydirectthesestudentsintheiracquisitionofknowledgeand piety.MayitpleaseHim,finally,toshoweruponthesonsofthe familiesofourpeoplethesupremegoodgift,thevocationtothe priesthood,upontheabundantharvestofwhichthehopesofthe SeminaryandthefutureoftheChurchinWesternAustralialikewisedepend.

WhentheSeminaryprojectwasfirstmooted,HisGracethe ArchbishopsecuredasplendidsiteatAttadale,embracing33acres. ButasthewarsituationbecamemoreacuteandtheFederalGovernment.placedrestrictionsonbuildingexpenditure,itwasdecidedtoformulateanalternativeplan.Providentially,justatthis time,thepropertyofMr.W.Padbury,knownas"GardenHill,"at Guildford,cameonthemarket,andwasforthwithboughtonthe Archbishop'sbehalf.Thepropertyconsistsofaspaciousresidence,containingthirteenlargerooms,amagnificenthall,aboathouseontheriver,besidesampleout-housefacilitiesandbeautifullykeptgrounds,includingtenniscourtsandplayingareas,togetherwithanorchardandavineyard.

Itsoutstandingpracticaladvantageliesinthefactthatithas beencomparativelyeasytokeepwithinthelimitsoftheoriginal estimatesforwhichprovisionhasalreadybeenmade.

ArchbishopofPcrth, IllsGracetheArchbishopsucceeded totheSeeofPerthin1935,attheearly ageof36. Hissevenyearsofofficehavebeen markedbythespiritualconsolidation oftheArchdioceseintheinauguration andgrowthoftheHolyNameSociety, theCatholicWomen'sLeague,andthe CouncilofCatholicAction.Parishes havebeensub-divided,newonescreated,andthenumberofpriestsdoubled. Avigorousbuildingprogrammehas giventheArchdiocesenewchurches. schools,andpresbyteries.Liturgical reformsinallchurcheshavebeencarriedthrough,andChurchmusichas beenbroughtintolinewiththe Church'sstrictestrequirements.

Educationhasflourishedwiththe erectionoffivenewcolleges,atraining

schoolforreligiousteachers,andin theresultsobtainedintheschools.

Othernotableachievementshave beentheintroductiontotheWestof newReligiousOrders,therevivification oftheSocietyforthePropagationof theFaith,thereorganisationofthe CathlicPress,andthedistributionof CatholicliteratureandthecommencementofaCatholicradiosession.

ThecrowningachievementofHis Grace'sepiscopateis,however,the launchingofSt.Charles'Seminary,the moresoastheworkwasinitiatedin theverydarkestdaysofthewar.May itprosper,andmayHisGracebe sparedmanyyearstocontinuetheremarkableworkhehasachievedduring thepastsevenyears.

Ordainedin1934,FatherLynchwent toFranceandmadeanextensivestudy ofPlainchantatthefamousMonastery atSolesmes.Laterhetookacourseat thePontificalCollegeofMusic,Rome, studyingpolyphonicmusicunderthe celebratedconductoroftheSt.John LateranChoir,ProfessorCasamiri.

HisGraceappointedhimDiocesanDirectorofSacredMusic in1937. SincethenFatherLynch hasbeeninstrumentalinestablishingaChanters'School,whichprovidesselected'boyswithafreesecondaryeducationinreturnfortheirservicesintheCathedralChoir.Alsoin 1937thePlainchantFestivalwasinaugurated,andhasbeenconductedannuallywithprogressivesuccess.Father LynchalsocompiledtheDiocesan ChurchMusicRegulations,whichthe Archbishopapprovedin1938.

VERYREV.L.J.GOODY.D.D.,D.Ph.

VeryRev.Dr.LauncelotJ.Goody wasborninLondonin1908,andcame toWesternAustraliawithhisparents in1916. Hematriculatedfromthe ChristianBrothers'College,St.George's Terrace,andwenttoPropagandaCollege,Rome,topursuehispriestly studies.In1927heobtainedtheDoctorateofPhilosophy.Ordainedin 1930,Dr.Goody,inthefollowingyear, receivedtheDoctorateofTheology. FromRomehewenttoYugoslavia tostudythelanguage,andafter eighteenmonths,spentprincipallyat Split,Dalmatia,andMontenegro,he returnedtoAustraliaattheendof 1932. Fromthenonto1935,Dr. GoodywasattachedtothestaffofSt. Mary'sCathedral.From193.5to1937 hewasAdministratorinBoulder,and waslaterparishpriestofToodyayfor threeyears.InNovember,1940,His GracetheArchbishopannouncedthe appointmentofDr.GoodyasRector ofSt.Charles'ApostolicSchool.

REV.FATHERALBERTLYNCH.

Rev.FatherAlbertLynch,whowill directthestudentsofSt.Charles'in 'ChurchMusic,studiedtheviolinunder variouslocalmasters.In1923hewent toBrussels,wherehewas,forfour years,attheConservatorium.During thisperiodhewasreceivedintothe Church.In1930hedecidedto studyforthepriesthoodandproceeded toPropagandaCollege,Rome.While therehewasinchargeofthestudents' choir.Oncehehadthesingularhon-

Bornin1891,atBlackrock,Dublin, VeryRev.FatherA.Kelly,S.J.,receivedhisearlyeducationatBelvedere College.Dublin,andenteredtheSocietyofJesusin1912.Laterhe studiedatSt.MarysHall,Stonyhurst, inEngland,andatLouvaininBelgium. ReturningtoAustralia,FatherKelly joinedthestaffofXavierCollege,Kew, in1926.andin1928beganhisassociationwithSt.Aloysius'College,Milson's Point.Sydney,wherehewasViceRectorandRector,respectively,until hisappointmentasfirstRectorofSt. LouisSchoolin1938.FatherKellyis alsowell-knownasanhistoricalstudent andlecturer.Heisamemberofthe DiocesanCouncilofCatholicAction.

fheoriginalsiteacquiredfortheSeminaryatAttadalewill remainatthedisposaloftheBishopsoftheWesternAustralian Province,andatsomefuturedate,whentimesandconditionspermit,theSeminarycanbemovedthere.Whenthetimecomesfor theremoval,theGuildfordpropertywillbetransformedintosome otherinstitution,theSeminaryfundsusedforitspurchaseand improvementbeingrecoupedforthecontinuationoftheoriginal projectatAttadale.

MostRea.James

OfAustralianbirth,HisLordship studiedatManlyandlaterinRome, wherehewasraisedtothepriesthood in1922.Aftersevenyearsofparish workinVictoria,hewasconsecrated BishopofGeraldtonin1930.

DuringtheelevenyearsofDr.O'Col. linsepiscopateintheSeeofGeraldton, extraordinaryprogresshasbeenmade. TheDiocesenowconsistsoffourteen parishes,withtwenty-ninechurches ministeredbynineteenpriests.Boardingschoolsforboysandgirlsnumber seven,whiletherearenineteenprimary schools.Over1,000childrenareprovidedwithCatholiceducationby133 Nunsand18Brothers.

TheCatholicpopulationhasincreasedtosixandahalfthousand.The greatestmaterialworkofDr.0'Collinshasbeen,undoubtedly,thecompletionoftheCathedralofSt.Frances Xavier-adistinctiveandunique buildinginthebaroquestyle-which wasopenedinSeptember,1938.

Butaboveallmerelytemporalconsiderationsandexternalachievements, HisLordshiphasachievedaconsolidationoftheCatholiccommunityandan intensificationofthespiritofFaithin theDiocesethat,inthecircumstances, isindeedremarkable.Hisdevotionto pastoraldutiesandinterestinthe civicaffairsofGeraldtonhaveendear-

Mr.K.Spruhan,whoisteachinghis. torytotheJuniorandSub-Junior classes,wasborninBoulderin1911. EducatedatSt.Ildephonsus'College, NewNorcia,andbytheJesuitFathers inSydney,Mr.SpruhanisEditorof thediocesannewsorgan,"TheRecord." Connectedwiththefoundationofthe ChestertonClubandthere-organisation oftheCentralCatholicLibrary,Mr. SpruhanisalsoamemberoftheDiocesanCouncilofCatholicAction.

Mr.W.Mangini,whoisteaching MathematicsandScienceatSt. Charles',studiedattheUniversityof W.A.,Crawley,andgraduatedBachelor ofSciencein1940,obtainingdistinctions inPhysicsandExperimentalPsychology.Forthepasttwoyearshehas beentutoringattheMaterDeiTrainingCollegeinScienceandMathematics. Mr.Mangini,whoisthesonofMr.and Mrs.J.Mangini,ofQueen'sPark,isa memberoftheThirdOrderofSt.Francisandwasveryactivelastyearin organisingtheLeagueofCatholic Youth.Heisalsoamemberofthe DiocesanCouncilofCatholicAction.

HE"LiteandLetters'sectionof Saturday's'WestAustralian"wasadornedbyanarticlefromthepenofagentlemanpresumably),under thepennameofElzevir.Itssubjectwas "Religion.-Andwhilethisisadmittedbytheologianstobeadifficult thingtodefine,itpresentsnoinsuperableobstaclestogentlemenwhoearn theirdailybreadnotinthesweatof theirbrow,butinbrewingpot-boilers forthepress.However,thisparticulararticlewassomewhatofanimprovementontheusualstuffabout: "Religionissosimple.Godislove. Whydon'ttheyurgethatstreet-walkingbyyounggirlsshouldbestopped, andthatpublicparksandair-raidsheltersshouldbepatrolled?Thislineof approachwillrevealtothemthat, whilecertainexternalprecautionswill beofhelp,acompletelyprohibitionist ortoorigorousactioninthematterof drink,maybringinitstrailyetgreater evils.Forthefinaltestofmoralsis notthevigilanceofthepolicebutthe actionoffreewillonthepartoftheindividual,reinforced,ofcourse,'bythe GraceofGod,whichitisnotconsidered relevanttomentionthesedays.

Inthefinalanalysis,thebestcourse ofactionseemstometobe:(1)The reductionofthealcoholiccontentof intoxicatingliquor,and(2),thereductionoftheoutputofthebreweries. InoticethatthePrimeMinisterhas beenconsultingtheStatePremierson thesubjectofAnzacDayholiday.Especiallynowwhenmeasuresarebeing takentopreventlargecongregations,it mightbeinadvisabletoclingtothe mannerofobservanceofformeryears. Catholicshavealwayshadobjections tothequasi-religiousnatureofthe publicceremonyObservedinthisState, andIthinktheirsuggestionoftwo separateobservancesmightbeasolutionofthepresentdifficulty.Even wereitfoundimpracticabletohold thesecularandciviccommemoration, thereligiousobservancecouldstillbe

made,andthat,afterall,isthemore important.

TheCatholiccommunityofthisState cannotlook'backuponthemannerof theAnzacDaycommemorationwithoutfeelingsofregret,becausethe AnzacDayCommitteeseesfittopersistinmakingapublicreligiousservice themainfeatureoftheday,andfrom thistheCatholicreturnedsoldiersand theCatholiccommunityasawholeare excluded.ThisisallthemoreregietfulbecausetheremonstrancesofCatholicsinVictoriaagainstasimi'arrocedureweresuccessfulin193Sinbring tingaboutsatisfactorychangesinthe programme.OnthatoccasionaprominentmemberoftheAnzacDayCommitteeinthisState,commentingon theVictorianreform,suggestedthat becausenoofficialprotesthadbeen lodgedbytheCatholicsofthisState, "noexceptionhadbeentakentothis arrangement."ItistruethatnoofficialprotesthasbeenmadebytheCatholicauthoritiesattheirexclusionin formeryears,butthisisattributab,e morethananythingelsetoanunderstandablereluctancetoappeartoraise asectarianissueoverouronesolemn nationalcommemoration.

ItisnonethelesshurtfultoCatholics,however,tobesoexcludedfrom whatisaboveallanationaloccasion, andifthesectarianissueberaised,it isontheotherfoot,anditismerely specioustorefusetoconsiderachange onthegroundsthatnoexceptionhas beentakentothepresentarrangement.Heisasingularlyuninformed personwhodoesnotknowatthislate hourthatCatholicshavepronounced andconscientiousobjectionstoparticipatinginanyformofreligiousworship orserviceotherthantheirown.Noris

thisanarrowoutlooknoranewdevelopmentapplicableonlytotheAnzac commemoration.Iffaithmeansanything,itmeansunityofspiritand standsforanorganicunionofpeople drawntogetherbycommonbeliefsregardingGodandHisrevelation,and themannerinwhichGodwishestobe worshipped.'Toparticipateinany otherreligiousfunctioniseithertoact aliebypretendingthereisunity whereworldsdivide,oratbestinsinceritybyseemingwholeheartedlyto particiateinwhatonemustconscienti ouslyregardaserror.

CatholicsholdthatthereligiouscelebrationofAnzacDayshouldbeattendedtobythedifferentdenominationsintheirownparticularchurches, andthatthereshouldalsobeanational andpubliccommemorativefunction quitedistinct.Thenatureofthis functionshouldbeentirelysecularand civic.AsthelateDr.Lonerganpointedout,theGreatWarwasanundenominationalevent,andthereligious issuewasnotraisedonenlistmentorin thepublicwelcomewhenthetroops returned.Eveninthetrenchesthere wasnoconscriptioninreligiousmatters.Further,thereisnoStatereligioninAustralia,anditistherefore decidedlymorethanpresumptuousfor theAnzacDayCommitteetosetUP oneononeofthemostmomentous daysoftheyear.Thisfosteringofa quasi-religiousformofpubliccelebrationuponanundenominationalorganisationiscompletelyunjustifiable,asit wilfullyexcludesmenwhofoughtand therelativesofthosewhodiedfortheir country.Itistobehopedthatthe AnzacDayCommitteewillbemore considerateintheirorganisationofour nationaldayinthefuture.

Thefingerofdestinypointsonce moretowardstheCatholicChurchas thereligiouscentreoftheworld.For Englishspeakingpeoplethenameof NewmanandRomeareeternallyjoined.After100yearsofsiftingand analysing,thefactstandsoutplainly thatitwastheconversionofJohn HenryNewmanthatmarkedtherenaissanceofCatholicityasafactorinthe worldaffairs.Thehighlycivilised worldcannotholdtogetherwithout thecementofreligionanditwasNewman'sconversionthatpointedthisout tothosewhospokehislanguage. Thereissomethingmiraculousin hissurvival.Everythingseemedto pointtoanotherconclusionforhe spentmostofhisCatholiclifeinthe shadowsofmisunderstanding.He wasconscientiouslysilencedthrough thewell-meaningeffortsofhisnearest friends.Oneaftertheotherthe wavesofdbliviondashedoverhim,to sinkbackandleavehimstandinglike animmovablerock.Hisphysicallife wasalwaysdelicate.Hegrewold longbeforehistime,yethereached theageofnearly90years.Nothing butthegraceofGodcouldhavepreservedsuchafragileformuntilthe dayofhisrehabilitation.Hewas nearly80yearsofagewhenhewas clothedinthesacredpurple.Yetat thatgreatage,carriedtoRomeby fearsomefriends,hedeliveredoneof hisfinestspeechesonthestruggle'betweentheunchangeablefaithofthe Churchandthepassingphilosophiesof hisownage.

NewmanenteredtheChurchata timewhenitsbestfriendsdidnotunderstandtheproblemthattheyfaced. TheChurchhadsurvivedtheshockof thegreatdisruptionofEurope:shehad throughoutadministeredtheSacraments,preachedtheGospel,and broughtmillionsintoheaven.Rutshe wasstrippedofalltemporalinfluence. Shehadneglectedherownphilosophy andwascontenttobeservedforthe mostpartbygoodpriestswhoseinterests'didnotextendbeyondthedutiesoftheirparochiallife.Shewas willingtobetolerated.Theproductionofgreatmenwasnothermetier. Theworldmovedonasthoughshedid notexist.Smallwonder,then,that theappearanceofNewmanwasanembarrassment.Whatplacedidshehave forhim?Itwassoondiscoveredthat hewashopelessasaplatformapologist andhenaturallyresentedhisexhibitionasaprizeconvert.Toplacehim inaseminaryasateacherwouldhave beendifficultforalltheothersonthe staff.Therewerethreethingsthat hecouldhavedoneanditwaspreciselythesethreethingsthathewas notallowedtodo. Hecouldhavebeentherectorofa CatholicuniversityinEngland,but thiswasthoughttobeoutofthequestion-theattempttotransfersucha universitytoIrishsoilwasanexperimentthatfewcouldhavetakenseriouslyforNewmanwasthemostEnglishofEnglishmen.Hecouldhave revisedtheEnglishBible,butthispro-

posalcameatatimewhenothershad undertakenthetask,andtheywere notlikelytorelinquishitinfavourof onewhosetrainingwassodifferent fromtheirown.Hecouldhavegone backtoOxfordandbeenaninspirationtotheCatholicyouthwhowere notsupposedtobethere,butwho weretheredespiteallprohibitions, ButNewmanatOxfordbroughtfear intotheheartsofalltheEnglishCatholicschools.Theywouldhe emptied.Catholicswouldflockto Oxfordandbecomecontaminatedwith itsworldliness.Itwasnottohe thoughtof.Theonlyplacethatcould befoundforhimwastoteachjunior boysinasmallschool.TheChurch hadnothingelseforhim. ButthewaysofGodarenotthe waysofmen;theyarenotalwaysthe waysofthebestandholiestofHis priestsandBishops.Theisolationof Newmanwasnotonlynecessaryforhis sanctificationbutalsoforhisimmortality.Itwasnecessarythatheshould belongtonopartyoractivity.He wastoowenothingtothefavoursof others.Hewasto'beavesselofgrace, uniqueandepochal.Hewastobea sowerandnotareaper.Itwastobe hislife'sworktounitethespiritual andintellectualperfections:toclothe religionwithbeautyandofferitasreasonabletoreasonablemen:toavoid therancorsofcontroversywhilstalwaysbeingthecentreofit;touncovertruthwhereveritwastobe found,andtoclaimitforChrist:but abovealltogivetheCatholicChurch oftheselaterdaysanewandunanswerableapologyforherhistoryand development.ThusitisthatNewman survivesinallhisfreshnessandattractionwhenmostofhiscontemporaries areforgotten.Heremainswithus becauseGodhasgivenhimtous.

ThedraftingofhundredsofthousandsofmenintotheUnitedStates Armyraisedquestionsinmanyquarters.Economists,sociologists,even sportingfans,watchedwithinterestfor theeffectsofthisgreatartificialsocial upheaval.Then,thevoiceofthe Churcharoseabovethischorusof doubt.Thiswasherquestion:"What abouttheirsouls?"Whileotherscared forthephysicalwantsofthesoldiers, thisanxiousMotherwishedtoprovide fortheneedsoftheirsouls.Aspecial Pastor,BishopJohnO'Hara,C.S.C., wasappointed,andhe,withhisown armyofpriests,keptwatchoverthe spiritualwelfareofthesoldiers.This taskofferedmanyproblems,andit seemedthatthe"ScapularMilitia"was thehappiestsolutionformany,ifnot all,ofthem.ItwastheideaofFather Pausback,AssistantGeneraloftheCarmeliteOrder,toformthisArmyof Mary,andtoclothethesoldierinher brown.HisplanwastodistributetoeveryCatholicServiceman aBrownScapularofOurLadyof MountCarmel.Thisideaisnotanew one.Undersimilarconditions,scapularsweredistributedduringthelast war.Indeed,thescapularisinmany waysthesoldier'sdevotion,and,in wartime,itcomesintoitsown.With itsspecialsignificanceatthehourof death,itisquitesuitedtotheneeds ofthesoldier.Thespiritualaidof thescapularisnotconfinedtothe actualstressofbattlealone.Evenin thesoldier'sdailylife,itisofincalculablevalue.Itteachesthesoldierto appreciatethepowerofprayerandits truecharacter.Ifsuchaschemecan flourishinAmerica,whynotinAustralia?Werealisethatcamp-fife offersmanytemptations,whichtrap theunwaryandtheweak.Enrolour soldiersinthisarmyofMary,andlet hersweetloveandinfluenceenfoldand protectthem.ThewearersofMary's liveryareunderherunceasingcare, andevenintheshadowofdeath,they needhavenofear,fordidshenotsay toSaintSimonStock,inthevision duringwhichshepresentedhimwith thescapular:"Whoeverdieswearing thishabitwillnotsuffereternalfire!" Wecanatleastbethankfulthatnoresponsiblepersonhas attemptedtominimisethegravityofthepresentsituation.But thedifficultyarisesastohowthepeopleatlargecanbetoldthe wholetruthandyetpreservetheircourageandmorale,anditis herepreciselythattheChurchesandnotthepoliticianswillfind theirsphereofinfluence,forwithoutunreasonablepessimismthere isadutyupontheChristianChurchtopreparethepeoplespirituallyforapossibilityofdefeat,andtheonlypracticalwayofdoing thisistoattempttoshowourmaterialisticcivilisationthatour destiniesareshapedbysomethinggreaterandmoreabidingthan men,machinesandmoney.Godisnotlesssupremebecausemen areprosperousorcomplacent,orjustsheerlyignorant.Godholds ourraceinthehollowofHishand,andHisWillshallbedone.be itpositivelyorpermissively.

Intimesofuniversalstressorimpendingcalamity,itisquite usualtofindamassrevivalwhichturnstowardsGod.Butthe experienceofthepastwarnsusagainstreceivingthesemanifestationsasevidenceofagenuinefundamentalchangeofheart,and stilllessofapermanentreligiousawakening.Indeedinone senseitisacravenattitudewhichimpelsmentozuriitowardsGo onlywheneverythinghumanhasfailed.Itislittlemore;:tan spiritualopportunismthatseeksfavoursfromaneglectedGodonly inthehouroftrouble,andwhenself-interestisthreatened.Yet atsuchatimeandinsuchamood,thebeginningsoftheChristian revolutionmaybemade.TheveryfactthatpeopledoturntowardsGodatallismoststrikingevidencethatreligionisafundamentalnecessityofhumannature,thatdeepdownmenrealisethey arenotsufficientuntothemselves,andthatultimatelyinthetestinghourallpaganismandmaterialisminwhichourcivilisationis steepedhasfailedtobringaboutapermanentapostasyonthepart ofthemasses.Theinevitablereactiontowarandtodefeat,real orimminent,isoneofspiritualbankruptcyandmoralanarchy. Itisatimeofabandonwhenthethingsofthespiritarejettisoned preciselybecausemanylackanyreligiouscertaintywhatever, whilemanyagain,evenofthosewhoprofesstheChristianFaithto someextentorother,havenotthatvividnessofconvictionsufficienttowithstandthefundamentaltestofdeathandfinaldisaster. *

Now,andintheaftermathofthiswar,thenisatimeofimmenseandimmeasurableopportunityofCatholicAction.Never beforedidtherichesofCatholicTruthstandoutinsuchreliefas againsttheabsolutespiritualpauperismofaworldinwhichthe Churchmustwork.Thespiritofabandoncanbecheckedonly bythosewhocanoffermenstrongreligiouscertaintiesandwho candiscernaDivinepatternandplanevenamongtheruinsofcivilisation.Itwillnotbepossible,ofcourse,towintheassentofall mentothefulltruthoftheCatholicFaith,butitshouldbepossible largelytorestorethosefundamentalnotionswhichareessentialto thesanityofman,tothesavingofhimfromdespair.andtohisreconciliationwithGod.These;are,briefly,beliefintheexistence ofGod,andinHisprovidenceovertheworld,andHisCommandments;someknowledgeofthelifeofJesusChrist,ofHisDivinity,ofthesignificanceofHisDeath;ofrepentanceforsin;andof theefficacyofprayer.Theartificialseparationmoreoverofreligionfromtherestofhumanactivitymustcease.Wemustbring Godbackintoallourways,firstly,intothelivesofindividualsand offamilies,andsoultimatelyintothewholecharacterofsociety,of government,andofworldaffairs.Whateverbetheproximate .:ausesofthisoranywars,theultimatediagnosispointsouttothe dversalfactofsinandtherejectionofGod.andthetaskofworld 1,constructionwillnotcomeaboutthroughblindevolutionary foiies,butonlythroughtheeffortsofmenofgoodwillwhohave reeo,:nisedtheSovereigntyofGodandtheKingshipofChrist.

THEARCHBISHOP'SADDRESS.

Theceremonyforwhichweareassembledthisafternoonisofgreater importance,Ithink,tothisProvince thananyChurchceremonywitnessed inthe99yearsofitsexistence.On theeveoftheattainmentofthe100th. anniversaryofthecelebrationofthe firstMassinAlbany,in1843,nomore appropriateceremonycouldmarkthat epoch-makingeventinthehistoryof theChurchinthisStatethantoinaugurateaMinorSeminarywhere youngsonsofWesternAustraliansoil wouldbepreparedforthesublime workofspreadingandguardingand buildingupGod'skingdominthis westernportionoftheAustralianContinent.

AmonthagothefirstgroupofSeminarists-asmallbutselectband of20-commencedtheircourseunder thesupervisionanddirectonofafully equippedstaff.For15monthspreviouslyweappealedtoyoufromevery pulpitintheDiocesesofPerthand Geraldtontohelpusinthisimportant work.Thatyouhaveco-operatedgenerouslyisevidencedfromtheconsoling factthatweopenthisbuildingto-day freeofdebt.ThatisalaudableacLievement; moo:highlycommendablewhenweconsiderthestressfultimesinwhichtheappea:was lodgedandconducted.Andto-day wethrowopenthegatesandinviteyou toseewithyourowneyeshowwehave carriedoutthecommissiongiventous, andperformedthetaskcommittedto ourcare.Thispropertyisidealfrom everypointofview,andwasacquired ataveryreasonablecost.Itwasrenovatedandequippedinadignified manner,worthyofthenoblepurposeto whichitwasbeingdedicated.(His GracereadthemessageofcongratulationfromtheHolyFather,through hisCardinalSecretaryofState,and fromtheApostolicDelegate-reported onPage2.)

To-day,myfriends,isthegreatest dayinthehistoryoftheChurchin WesternAustralia.Thegreatworks ofpastyears,thebuildingsofcathedrals,splendidchurches,andwellequippedschools,allpaleintoinsignificance beforetheestablishmentofthis,asyet, humbleSeminary.Thatstatement mayseemtoyoualittledrastic-alittle toosweeping-butpauseamoment. TheentireChurchcannotgivetoGod asmuchhonour,norobtainsomany gracesasasinglepriestbycelebrating asingleMass;forthegreatesthonour thatthewholeChurchwithoutpriests couldgivetoGodwouldconsistinofferingtoHiminsacrificethelivesof allmen.Butofwhatvaluearethe livesofallmencomparedwiththeSacrificeofJesusChrist,whichisaSacrifice ofinfinitevalue.ByasingleMassa priestgivesgreaterhonourtoGodthan alltheangelsandsaints,alongwiththe BlessedVirginMaryhavegivenorshall give;fortheirworshipcannotbeof infinitevaluelikethatwhichthepriest celebratingattheAltarofferstoGod. JesusChristhasdiedtogiveusthe priesthood-thatwemayhaveavictim altogetherholyandimmaculatecapable ofrenderingtoGodanhonourworthy ofGod.Thereforeofwhatvalueyour cathedralsunlessthereareprieststo celebratetheSacredMysteriesuponthe altars-whatvalueyourchurchesunlessthereareprieststobringChrist todwellinyourtabernacles.What valueyourschools,unlessthereare prieststonourishthesoulsofthechildrenwiththeBodyandBloodofthe livingGod?ThatiswhyIsaythat intheopeningofthisSeminaryhas beenaccomplishedthegreatestwork everachievedinWesternAustralia-a workinwhichthefingerofGodhas wipedawaydifficultiesfortheMaster oftheVineyardneedslabourers,and Hisgraceandblessingwillbeupon thisventure.Letmethensuggestto youonthissolemnandhappyoccasionafewthoughtsonthepriesthood. ItiswithhumilitythatIspeakasone calledtothatdivinevocation,andI knowIambutechoingtheopinionsof myfellowpriestswhenIsaythat, whileweareconsciousofthesublime privilegethatisours,weareequallyconsciousofourgreatunworthiness.

Timeandcircumstancesshapethe destiniesandvocationsofothermen, butthehandofGodselectsHispriests.

"YouhavenotchosenMe,"saidChrist. "ItisI,yourGod,whohavechosen you."Ofhowgreatimportancethen intheeyesofGodmustbethepriesthood;and,ifyouwouldobjectthat Godhaschosenattimesunwisely,I wouldanswer,inthewordsofSacred Scripture,that"thefoolishthingsofthe worldhastheLordchosenthatHe mayconfoundthewiseandtheweak thatHemayconfoundthestrong."The powerofGodthenshinesfortheven inthisallthemorebrightlyinthat weakinstrumentshandlesuchpower. Thevocationtothepriesthoodisa God-givendestiny,andso,worthyof allthereverenceandhonourweshould paytoallthingsthatcomefromthe handsoftheAlmighty.Reflect,too, thatonceapriest,apriestforeveroncethesealofOrdersimpressesthe soulofaman,whetherforgoodorevil, hepossessesthatpowertothedayhe goestomeethisGod-apowerwhich noearthlyauthoritycanevertearfrom hishands.Letusconsiderthispower throughwhichwewillcometorealise alittleofthesurpassingdignityand grandeuroftheChristianPriesthood. THENRYII.ofEnglandlistenedto theArchbishop'swords.The officeofChancellorwasvacant atthetime,andTheobaldofCanterburywastellinghimoftheyounga' Becket.Thirty-eight,hehadalready beenintheserviceofTheobaldfor twelveyears.Hehadaquickmind, saidtheArchbishop,andastrong memory.Hadunusualability,wasa winningconversationalist,too,though hestutteredalittle.He'dstudied CivilandCanonLawatBologna,had beenordainedadeacon.Yes,the Archbishophadknownhisparentsin Franceyearsago.Asaboy,young a'Beckethadbeensentacrosstofinish hisstudiesattheUniversityofParis. Hewasemployedasalawclerkwhen theArchbishophadfirstbeguntotake aninterestinhim.

Well,itseemedtotheyoungKing thatthiswastherightmanforthe Chancellorship.Canterburywascertainlyaschoolofpracticalpolitics. Theobaldwasnofool,either.Soit wasarranged.Thenandthere,at thirty-eight,a'Becketbecame,under theKinghimself,themostimportant maninEngland.

Henry,twenty-one,stillanimpulsive -boy,wascharmedwiththeclever youngChancellor.Often,whenthe huntingwasoverortheday'swork finished,thekingwouldcomeoverto hishouse,rideintohishall,drinkhis health,andawayagain.Hedevelopedakindofhabitofjumpingoverthe tabletotakeaseatbythesideofa' Becket.Thomas,thougholder,hada boy'scare-freeheart,anditwasn'tlong beforeachroniclercouldwrite,"Never weretwobetterfriendsinallChristendom."

TheChancellorwasagreathost.His housewasopentoallcomers,therewas seldomamealatwhichearlsand baronswerenotofthecompany.The greattableglitteredwithgoldengoblets,richwines,andraredishes.Not thatThomashimselfateordranklargely,itwasjusthisnaturaltasteforgorgeousdisplayandaninbornprodigalityofdisposition.

OnceHenrydeclaredwaronthe CountofToulouse.Thomas,athis ownexpense,broughttotheKing'said anarmyof1,200knightsandnearly 5,000footmen,andappearedhimselfat theirhead.Inhelmandcuirassheled thechargeswithallthedaringandresolutionthatmarkedhischaracter.He stormedtownsandcastles,andreturnedtoEnglandin1161inthefullblaze ofdiplomaticandmilitaryglory.

Then,Thedhalddied.Henrysent forThomas,toldhimhewantedto makehimArchbishopofCanterbury.

ThomasthoughttheKingwasjoking, discoveredhismistake,demurred,protested,warnedtheKingoftheinevitableconsequencesofhisdecision."If youdoasyousay,"hedeclared,"your mindwillbequicklyestrangedfrom me,andyouwillhatemethenasmuch asyoulovemenow;foryoutaketo yourself,andwillcontinuetotaketo yourself,anauthorityinChurchmatterstowhichIshouldnotconsent,and manypersonswillbeprompttostirup strifebetweenus."

ButHenryinsisted;ThomasresignedtheChancellorship,andwasordainedpriest.Athisconsecrationheig-

bishopofCanterbury.ThenHenry begantofearhehadgonetoofar,and begantogoback.ThatDecember, aftersixyearsofexile,ThomasreturnedtoEngland.

PreachingintheCathedralon ChristmasDay,hedenouncedhisenemies.Theysquirmed,playedonthe King'ssusceptibilities."Solongas Thomaslives,"oneofthemcomplained,"youwillhaveneithergooddays, norpeacefulrealm,norquietlife." Henry,workedupbythistimeintoa violentfitofpassion,shouted,"Will noonedelivermefromtheinsultsof thislow-bornandturbulentpriest?"

Fatalwords!Fourofthosepresent hurriedatoncetotheCathedral,burst inbythanorthdoor.Thomasknelt onthestonefloorofthetransept,praying.Thethirdblowcutoffthecrown oftheskull,andwiththepointofa swordtheyscatteredhisbrainupon thestones.

Butthosefewmomentsofdark tragedyintheCathedralofCanterbury halted,forfourhundredyears,the wholemovementagainsttheautonomy oftheChurch.Thetide,asBelloc hasit,ranrapidlybackwards.Within anhourThomaswasamartyr.Within amonth,thechampionnotonlyofthe Church,butofthecommonpeople,who knewinstinctivelyanddoggedlythat theindependenceoftheChurchwas theirsafeguard.Withinayearthe statesman,soldier,'bishopandmartyr, wasSaintThomasofCanterbury. Later,whenthestormbroke,anEnglishCardinaljoinedhim,andanother ChancelloroftheRealm-JohnFisher andThomasMoore;victims,witha hostofothers,ofthetragicstruggle betweenChurchandState.

noredthetumultuousovationofthe crowd,kneltthroughouttheceremony withbowedheadandtear-filledeyes. Apremonitionofwhatwastocome seemedtoweighheavilyuponhim.

Itistheconsensusofopinionthata greatchangetookplaceinhim,buthe didnotbecomeasaintovernight. ThomastheArchbishopwasThomas theChancellor-thesameman.The sameinthequicknessofhisapprehension,strongwilled,fearless,andwith thesameoldfireinhistemper.He becamegraver,moreinearnest,more vigorousinselfdiscipline,morehumble,morecharitable-butThomasa' Becketstill.Yethehadsethisfoot onthepathtoheroicsanctity,andpersevered,saveperhapsononeoccasion, untiltheend.Ittookgraceandhis indomitablewilleightyearstomake ofThomastheman Thomasthe saint!

Heroseatcock-crow,chantedthe Office,confessed,andsubmittedhis backtothelashofthediscipline. Studied,tillnine,whenhecelebrated Mass.Spenttherestofthemorning

inhiscourtonChurchandjudicial business.Everyday,inhiscell,he washedthefeetofthirteenbeggars,in thenameofChrist;gavethemfoodand afewshillingseach.

Graduallytheinevitableconflictwith thethronedeveloped.Bothwere strongmen.Minordisputeshadalreadypreparedthegroundwhen,in 1164,Henryattemptedtodefinethe customsandprivilegesaffectingtherelationshipoftheChurchandthesecularGovernmentinEngland.Hemade afull,formalstatementonthesubjectattheCouncilofClarendon.One ofthesixteenarticlesbroughtclerics underthejurisdictionnotofecclesiastical,butofthesecularcourts.Thomas suspectedHenryofstrikingattheindependenceoftheChurch.Heyieldedatfirst,indeferencetotheother bishops,regretteditafterwards,and tookupanattitudeofuncompromising resistance.HefoughtagainstanattemptoftheStatetosubjectthe Churchtoitsjurisdiction.Hefought, andwasmartyred,fortheprinciple thatthethingsofGodarenotsubject tothejudgmentofmen.

Henrytriedtoforcehisacceptance. Thomaswasadamant.Henry,frustrated,resortedtopersecution.Questioned,forexample,a'Becket'sintegritywhenChancellor,orderedanenquiryintotheaccounts.Thebreach widened,becameaviolentcontroversy, sobadinfact,thattheArchbishop soughtsafetyinFrance,andfought theKingwiththeonlyweaponsathis command-excommunicatioinandinterdict.

Henry'scoupdegracewasthecoronationofhisson,in1170,throughtee ArchbishopofYork,therebyoverridingthetraditonalprivilegeoftheArch-

Chambers'sEncyclopaediagivesthe followingdetailsofherlifeandwritings:MotherShiptonis"afamous prophetessofpopularEnglishtradition,whosestoryhasatanyratethe weightofconsiderableantiquity.S. Bakerpublishedin1797herprophecies,togetherwiththoseoftheCheshire prophetNixon,andherewegatherthe followingcircumstantialdetails.Ursula ShiptonwasbornnearKnaresborough, inYorkshire,inJuly,1488,wasduly baptisedasUrsulaSouthielbythe AbbotofBeverley;attwenty-four marriedTonyShipton,abuilder,and departedthislifewithmuchserenity atoverseventyyearsofage.However,abook116841bythenotorious RichardHeadistherealsourceof mostofthefablesabouther.Here wearetoldhowAgathaShiptonwas carriedoffandmarriedbytheDevil, howsheborehimanuglyimpishchild, enjoyedpowerandknowledgebeyond themeasureofmortals,andleftmany propheciesbehindher.Ofthesethe earliestknownrecordisapamphletof 1641,containingformalpropheciesof thedeathofLordPercyandofWolsey. A prophecyindoggerelverseunderher namewasputintocirculationabout 1862byCharlesHindley,onhisown confession(NotesandQueries,1873). Thesewretchedlinesconcludedwitha prophecythattheworldwouldcome toanendin1881,whichcausedgreat anxietyamongstafewignorantpersonsincornersofEngland."

Thereisonlyonereasonableanswer tothatquestion.Theallegedprophecyisnotanancientpredictionbut amodernfake.Itwasnotwritten centuriesago'bytheallegedMother Shiptonoranybodyelse.Itwaswrittenin1862byacertainCharlesHindley,andcirculatedunderthenameof MotherShipton.Thereisnoroom for'doubtonthispoint,forMr.Hindleypubliclyadmittedthathehadfabricatedthedocument.But,evenapart fromHindley'sconfession,thelanguageusedisitselfsufficienttoshow thatthedocumentwasnotwrittenat thetimetowhichitisascribed.

"NATIONALNEURASTHENIA."

Thepresentpopularityofallsortsof bogus"prophecies"issimplyasymptomofthepsychologicaldiseasecaused bytheanxietyanddistressofwar;a diseasewhichArchbishopSimonds,of Hobart,hasveryaptlydefinedas"nationalNeurastenia.""Unfortunately," HisGracecontinued,"periodsofanxiety,suchasthis,areoftenexploited byclevercharlatanswhocapitalisethe superstitiousweaknessesofworried women.War-timeseemstobethe openseasonforsuperstitionmongers.

Itisasadthingthatmanypeople arenotabletoacceptthesorrowsand 'bereavementsofwar-timeinaspiritof Christianfortitudeandresignation,and throughthelackofalivelyChristian faith,theyturnforcomforttotheoccultarts.Duringthesedays,the dream-book,theastrologicalalmanac, theplanchetteandthedimlylitseance areinseason,andincidentallyarenettingtinydividendsfortheirexploiters. Superstitionsandperversionsoftrue religiousworshiphavealwaysbeen withus,sincethedayswhenSimon MagusthoughtthattheGiftsofthe HolySpiritwereforsale.Historyrecordsthatwheneverthelightoftrue religiousfaithburnsdimly,theflames ofsuperstitiongenerallyflareup.It isaremarkablethingthatthevery peoplewhoderidereligiousfaithwill oftendisplayanamazingcredulitytowardsthefantastichumbugofpopularsuperstitions.Ihaveknownmen whorejecttheideaofGod'sprotectingcare,yettheywouldnotthinkof settingoutuponajourneywithout carryingsometalismanorcharmin theformofablackcat,atortoise,or arabbit'sfoot.Themanwhocarries arabbit'sfootinhispocketforluck seemstooverlooktheobviousfact thatthepreciousfootdidnotbring thebestoflucktoitsfirstpossessor, therabbit.Byacuriousparadox, therearemanypeoplewhoscornthe revealedwordof'God,butarereadyto placeimplicitfaithinanyallegedrevelationofthefuture,fromtheplausiblepropheciesofcleverpsychologists totheridiculouspredictionsofstarbooks."

Itisthatobjectinviewtowhichhe hasadjustedhistreatmentofthesubject.Butitisenoughtosayhere thatthevastmajorityofProtestants fouldindignantlyrepudiatesuchadescriptionoftheReformation.They coulddenythatitmeantmerelythe rejectionofPapaljurisdiction.Methodists,Baptists,Congregationalists, Presbyterians,LowChurchAnglicans, Lutherans,andrepresentativesofall otherProtestantChurcheswillinsist thattheReformationbrokewiththe traditionsofathousandyears'standing,andthatitrejectedwhatiscalledblasphemousdoctrinesandidolatrousworshipwhichitsaidthatall professingCatholicshaduntilthen maintained.TheAnglicanArticlesof ReligionintheBookofCommon Prayertellusthat,notonlythe ChurchofRome,buttheChurchof Jerusalem,Alexandria,andAntioch fellintoerror.TheRev.Maynard maynowthinkthatamistake.He maywanttorestricttheerrortoRome, andonlytoPapalclaimstoauthority. Hemaydesiretorestorethedoctrines andworshipwronglythoughtblasphemousandidolatrousbytheProtestantreformers.Butthatdoesnot givehimtherighttosaythatthey wereneverrejected;andthat,because hemaintainsthemnow,theyhavealwaysbeenmaintainedbytheChurch ofEngland.
