Havinghadoccasionrecentlytolook throughthefilesofanewspaperfor theyear1830,"P.O'D.,"writingrecentlyto"Viator"inthe"Dublin Standard,"says:Iwasdelightedto findintheissueforSeptember20th. ofthatyear(justacenturryago)a highlyinterestingletterofDaniel O'Connellrelativetothe'Belgianrevolution.
Inviewofthecelebrationsthisyear ofthecentenaryofBelgianindependence,thisletterisofgreathistorical value.TheLiberatordealsinconsiderabledetailwiththethenpositionin theNetherlands,withspecialreference tothepositionandoutlookoftheCatholicpopulation.
ThisinterestingepisodeinO'Connell'scareerhasbeenneglectedby mostofhisbiographers.
Thesentimentswereexpressedina letterreplyingtoaninvitationtoattendameetinginCorktocelebrate theoverthrowofthedespotsinFrance andtheNetherlands.TheLiberator wrotefromDerrynane, andashewas unabletoattendthemeetingheoutlinedhisviewsandopinionsinconsiderabledetail.
Igiveafewexcerptsfromthismost interestingandimportantdocument:-
"IfIwereatthemeeting,Ishould endeavourtoextendthecongratulationtotherecentrevolutionarymovementinBelgium;atleastofsympathyforthesufferers, shouldtheir movementbeultimatelyunsuccessful. ItrusttheywillflingofftheKing whichEnglandandherHolyAlliance havethrustuponthem.Therenever wasamoreatrociousactoftyranny thantheimposingtheDutchKing onthepeopleofBelgium.Itwasas undisguisedapieceofdespotismas everyetwasexhibitedtotheworld.

Next,O'Connell'sletterdealsat lengthwiththevariousactsofthe DutchKinginsuppfessingCatholic

Inwritingthustothepromotersof theCorkmeeting,theLiberatorobviouslydesiredthatthediscussions shouldbecorrectlyinformed,andthat therightviewshouldbeheldbyIrish CatholicsconcerningtheContinental upheaval,aboutthemeritsofwhich few,ifany,Irishmenofthetimehad abetterappreciationthanhehad.
TheletterwasdatedSeptember11 andwhentheBelgianindependence waslaterdefinitelyestablished,the feelingsoftheTribunemaybeimagined.
