TheUglyMen'sCompetition,which hasbeenconductedduringthepastsix months,toraisefundsforSt.Joachim'sConvent(BuildingFundterminatedlastSaturdaynight,at11p.m., afteratwodays'bazaarheldinthe ChurchGrounds.Afterakeenlycontestedballot,Mr.A.0.Ripponwas declaredthewinner.Theleadersof thevariouscandidates'committees, MesdamesMcManus(Mr.Rippon),the ChildrenofMarY(DeanKiely),and theMissesDudgeon(DeanBrennan), aretobecongratulatedonthesuccess oftheundertaking,asuccessthatmust necessarilyhaveentailedhard,continuousworkonthepartofthemselvesand theirhelpers.Thecommitteedesire toexpressinanespecialmanneritsappreciationofthesplendidsupportgivenbyDeanKielyandtheRev.Father ButlerandtheChildrenofMaryrequestthatafullmeasureofpraisehe extendedtoMrs.WalshandMissM. ThedumpingofRussianwheatshouldopenwidetheeyesofthose financialinterestsinBritainwhoaresoconceredaboutthefinancialstabilityoftheDominions,whointurnarekeenlywatching thetendenciesofthismysteriousdumpingofRussianwheat.Every fallinthepricesofourwheatandwoolmeansadropinrevenue andshouldbeofgraveconcerntoGovernmentinthesedays whenBudgetsandBalancesholdthelimelight.Isthisdumping ofRussianwheatathreattoSovietopponents?Isitabigbluff toembarassthewheatinterestsofCanada,America,andthisCommonwealth.andamake-believethatRussiaisfeedinghermillions likefightingcocks,andstillhaveabundancetospare?Letus see.
SovietCommissionersarefeverishlystrivingtogatherthe RussiangrainintotheCommuniststores.Butthegraindeliveriesarenotcominginasregularlyasexpected,notwithstanding thepunitivemeasuresfordelinquentswhofailtorespondtothe Commissioners'demands.Itisevenadmitted,wearetold,that thedeliveriesareveryunsatisfactory.Whatthenisthesecretof thisdumping?Weareconvincedthereissomethingsinisterin it.Itisnotaneconomicmove;weratherimagineitisapolitical one-agambler'sthrow.TheCommunistExchequerisdepleted. TheDundalkcontingentwasexceedinglylarge,andtherewasabigassemblageofFranciscanTertiariesfrom Newry.
Rainfellalmostincessantlythroughouttheevening,but,notwithstanding this,thefervourofthepilgrimswas undiminished.
Whileawaitingthearrivalofthe Dundalkpilgrims,aTertiaryrecited theFranciscanCrown,whichwasrespondedtowithgreatfervourbythe vastconcourse.

Speakingatthedemonstrationat Rostevor,representingDown,Armagh, Fermanagh,Monaghan,andLouth, SenatorMcAllister,dealingwithpartition,saidtheyintheSixCounties wereportionofoneofthemostprosperouscountriesinEurope,butto-day theirindustriesandcommerceowing toGovernmentmismanagement,had recededtilltheywerealmostbeyond regeneration.
TheGovernment'smeasurespassed forthepurposeofaidingtheagriculturistswere,headded,merepolitical window-dressing.AftertheActswere passedregulationsweredraftedwhich madethemineffective. AppealtoCatholics.
HeappealedtotheCatholicpeople oftheNorthtojointheNationalLeague.Theyconstitutedone-thirdof thepopulation,andshouldcommand theGovernment'srespect.
Mr.J.Coburn,T.D.,saidthecountrycouldnotaffordtwoParliaments runonsuchagrandiosescale.They costIrelandover£30,000,000,whereas inpre-WardaysEnglandgoverned thecountryon£11,000,000.
SpeakingatPomeroy.Mr.T.J.S. Harbison,M.P.,saidtheeyesofthe followersoftheNorthernParliament werebeingopenedtothecardinal follyofdividingtheircountryintotwo areasandsuroundingthemwithCustoms,therebyprohibitingfreecommercialintercoursebetweenthecitizensofacommonnation.
