TherealspiritoftheGospelisthe spiritofhumbleandheroicsacrifice, anditshighestevidenceisshownin thatdevotionwhichgivesmenand women,withouttheslightestreserve, toGod,intheserviceofthatChurch whichHisDivineSonestablishedby Histeachingsandsufferingsforthe instructionandsalvationofmankind. Thisspiritofsacrificeisbestexempli- fiedinthezealousChristianpriest,in themonkornun,whoarereallythe highestproductionsofChristianity.In thisviewoftheresultsoftheGospel, asinterpretedbytheancientChurch ofRome,Irelandisjustlyentitledto aforemostplaceinChristianannals. TheUnitedStateshadgreatfinan- .cialdealingswithMexico,anditspowerfulfinancierscastenviouseyeson thegreatpotentialitiesofapeaceful country.
Thestrongattitude*akenupbytheChurchmadetheGovernmentofthe UnitedStatesanxioustosecureaset- tlement,andtheAmericanAmbassa- dor,Mr.DwightMorrow,neelatedthat hisGovernmentwouldforgothein- terestdueontheMexicandebtfor 1929ifasettlementwerearrivedat.
Religiouspeaceisrestored,andEls hopsandpriests(bothsecularand regular),withsomeexceptions,have returnedtotheirpostsandhaveagain takenovertheirspirituallabours.
Itwasknownthatmanyreligious had,beenbanishedtoSt.Mary'sIsland, which,onaccountofitsbadclimate andinsanitarydwellings,waslookeduponwithterror.Infact,itis knownasMexico's"Devil'sIsland."
No beforewomanwaseverbanishedthere thetimeofex-PresidentCanes. Hemadenoexceptions,andamong hiswomenvictimsweresomeofthe noblestladiesintheland,whohad tosufferaslowmartyrdominthat pestilentialplace. Scarcethreemonth,agothernmour
spreadthattheGovernmentwasgoing toinflictthefinalactofdesecration upontheCathedralbyboringinthe verycentreofittoseeifanoil-well mightbediscovered.Nowthebeau- tifulchurchhasbeenrestoredtothe Catholics.
Allthechurches,however,remain,asinFrance,thepropertyoftheState.Theparishionersareliabletobearthe costofmaintenanceandrepairs,al- thoughtheStatemay,inspecialcases, contributetosomeextent.Laycom- mitteesareappointedtoseethatthe State'slegalregulationsareobserved.
