Theprestigeof.royalty,whichonce forcedmentoapproachbeatingthe groundwiththeirforeheads,now elicitsonlyaperfunctorybowonstate occasions.Underinjuryandoppressionmanhaslearnttostraightenhis back,andwehavegivenovermost oftheexteriorsignsofhonour.In particular,tokneeldownisasignof suchcompletesubmissionthatour self-esteemdoesnotpermit,ustomake it.
What,then,bringsthecrowdsin ¶erusalemtotheirneeds?ReverenceforGod,yousay.No.itisnot exactlyreverenceforGod.Ifitwere so,sinceGodiseverywhere,goodmen wouldlosethepoweroflocomotion.
Tobesure,FatherGinhacdidkneel downinthe,streetonce,butevenhe didnotgetthehabitofit.Thesoul ofamancanbeinarespectfulrosturebeforeGodwithoutanyrefersnce totheconditionofhisbody.
Thereasonofthetotalabasement madebythepilgrimsinJerusalemis lotthattheyareworshippingGodin ageneralway.Astheykneel,afigurerobedinwhiteseemstostandin theseplaces,formingundertheireager eyes,tillHeappearsfullyilluminatedbytheafternoonsun.Hisface showsHissuffering,Hisrobeis bloody.Hedragsacrossthroughthe marrowwaysinagony.ItisChrist theykneelto,Whofromstonesand wallsofhousesrisesupbeforethem gloriousandsuffering.TheyworshipGod.notinHeaven,butlocalised andseenbyassociationwithmaterial objects.Theyabusetheirbodies,bemusetheyareworshippingGodby thesenses.
Thisisthesecretofourworshipof Catholicsymbols,ofliturgicalceremoniesandreligiouspictures,ofall thatisknownaspiouspracticesand sensibledevotion.Theyareworshippingthroughimagesandtheimagination.Theeyesofthebodysee,the mindinduces,thesoulreverencesand soulandbodyarecastdowntogelier inadoration,notoftheimage,butof whatisrepresentedbytheimage. Thentogoroundthechurch,and tokneelbeforethefourteenStations paintedonthewall,isnotafutile action.Bylookingatthesepictures wearecallingupandstimulatingthe faiththatisinus,andexcitingour mindstoconsiderationofthetruth.
Iwouldgoevenfurther,andsaythat imagesnotonlyrecall,butevencarry withthem,thetruth.Thewordsof Scripture,oftheteacher,oftheChurch, areallmaterialthingswhichconvey immaterialtruthstothesoul,which atbirthknewnothing.As,inEvedue,Godsatontheoutspreadwings ofthegoldencherubimthatsurmountedtheArk,sotheSpiritaccompanies thewordsortheobjectsthattelloflt.
Thesoulatbirth,thoughithasthe powerofreasoning,"seesnothing.But ithasafacultyofvision,apowerto apprehendexteriorthings,whichbe 4;xercisecomestoperformthesame unctionforitastheeyedoesforthe body.Thisfaculty,theeyeofthe mind,istheimagination.Thereason haslogicalabilityandcanunderstand, butitisblind.Itistheimagination thatreceivesallideasfromoutside, andpresentsthemtothecomprehensionofthebrain.Whatisseenby theimaginationisappreciatedbythe reason:withouttheimagination nothingentersintothemind.
Therefore,togetareal,andnota theoretical,appreciationofanytruth, especiallythosedivinetruthswhich aresodifficulttoapprehend,itisuseful,itisessentialtoemploytheimaginationnothingentersintothemind.

Supposeablindmanstandingon theshoreofthesea,onwhich,farout. ayachtissailing.Becauseofhis blindnesshehasneverseenaship,but, learningthatashipliesbeforehim'. heturnstowardswhereitlies.It isreallythere,ashellswayingin'the waves,carryingawhiteshroudofsail, bywhichthewinddrivesiton.It shinesgloriousagainsttheclouds.It movesrapidly,withtheseabreaking roundit,and,asitturnsandfalters, thepeopleonthebeachcryoutin admiration.Now,howmuchofthis doestheblindmancomprehend?That whichcomestohissensesheperceives; hehearsthecriesandthewaves' noise;thesamebreezesthatswellthe sailsblowroundhisears.Butthe boatitselfhecannotcomprehend,becausehewantsthepowerofsight.No amountofmathematicalandelaboratedescriptionscouldgivethereality thatoneglimpseofthatunseenob jectwouldafford.
