Obviouslytheonlygoodthingabout theoptimististhatheisnotapessimist.Andasimilarbroodingupon thebroadyetsubtletruismsofexistencewillshowthattheonefaint gleamofgood,thatlingersinthe.pessimist,isthefactthatheisnotanoptimisivForpessimismmeant,inthe dayswhenitmeantanything,adenial ofallvalueinexistenceofanykind;a renunciationoftheuniverseaswellas theworld.Butoptimismmeans somethingmorehuman,butnotmuch morerespectable;amereworldly weaknessofencouragingtheworldto dowhateverithappenstobedoing. Itisinthissensethatoptimismis trulysaidtobeessentialtomodern business.Itisonlyanotherwayof sayingthatsomesortofself-deception isessentialtoanysortofself-satisfactionandself-deceptionandself-satisfactionarethenecessaryattendantsof thereignofpureselfishness.Anything likediscontent,revoltorevencriticismshakesallthatworldofillusions andinvisiblewealth,whichisonly sustainedbyperpetualpraise.Asregardsthatworldorsystemasawhole, thebullmustalwaysbeheldanobler animalthanthebear;andonthisvery sensitivesortofbulltheeffectofthe RedFlagisnotorious.Sincethissort ofhumbughascometobe,inpractice,whatismeantbyoptimisma manmightwellrelapseuncomplaininglyintopessimism;butIforonevery stronglyresentanyappearanceofrelapsingintocynicism.YetIamcompelledbyasenseoftruthtotakea viewofcertainmuchadmiredrecent movements,whichtheTrueOptimist willcallcynical.
Therehavebeeninrecenttimesdefiniteimprovementsindefinitethings. Mr.H.G.Wellsandhisschoolinforms usthatthesedefinitethingsareparts ofaratherindefinitething,auniversalimprovementinhumannature; whichMr.WellscallsTheOpenConspiracy,andMr.BelloccallsThe GreatRosyDawn.Now,atthe.risk ofbeingcalledacynic,Imustconfess thatIdonotbelievethattheseparticularimprovementsarepartsofa universalimprovement;Ieventhink themconnectedwithancientweaknesseswhichhavenotverymuchimproved.Andbywayoftestingthe matter,Iwouldputthispointtothe merelyoptimisticFuturist.Ifthe soulofmankindisnowfollowingcertainsignalsbecausetheypointtocertainideals,whyisitatthesametime acceptingthosethatpointexactlythe otherway?Whyarethereflatcontradictionsinthecustomsandfashions ofourtime;notcontradictionsthatare thecollisionsofnewandold,butcollisionsofoppositethingsbothvalued asnew?Unfortunatelythereisonly oneexplanation;andthatisthecynicalexplanation.Totakeatrivialexamplefirst;itisperfectlytruethat femaledresshasonthewholebecome notonlyfreerandmorenatural,but inmanywayssimplerandmorebeautiful.Someofit,ofcourse,hasbecome rathertoonaturalandsimple;but thatisanotherquestion.Thequestnonhereiswhysomethingthatfollowsnatureandsimplicity,something thaterrsonthesideofnatureandsimplicity,shouldalsoerratthesame timeontheoppositeside.Howare wetoreconcilethisrevoltofnature withtherevivalofthemostelaborate enamelofcosmetics?Longagointhe '90'sMr.MaxBeerbohmwroteaDefenceofCosmeticspraisingthemas thingsmorefictiveandornate;but hewouldneverhavepraisedthemas moresimpleandnatural,orevenas morefree.Hewouldhaveconceivedthem,asanycommon-senseperson must,asgoingalongwithcostlyand complexgarinents,topplingheaddressesorsweepingtrains.Insostiff andgorgeousamasqueradeawoman mightwellwearacolouredmask.But whatarewetomakeofthewoman whowearsnexttonothingexcepta mask;andthensayssheismerely natural?Thatmaskisnopartofthe cultofnaturalness.Itisnopart evenofthecultofnakedness.What isthesenseofthatcombination-of thatcontradiction?
