Thetradition isreplyfromSenatorCurtis. strongerto-daythanever,becausethe pasteightyearshavewitnessedthe peakofprosperityforU.S.A.The spoilsofwarcametoUncleSam,and itmatterednotwhetheraDemocrat oraRepublicanreignedinWashington,US.A.hadtogrowrichandpowerful.Ineveryelectioncampaignthe democratsfacedtwoseriousweaknesses,withintheirownranks-divisionandlackoffunds.RepublicanismisthepartysponsoredbyBig Business.Ithasfacedeveryoppositionwithitswarchestsoverflowing.
ThatinspiresConfidenceandisasufficientlystrongargumenttoswaythe undecided.Moneyspeaks,andin thefinalanalysisthemajorityvotefor theirowninterests,whichthrivebettertinderawealthyparty.The1928 campaignisthesoleexceptiontothat. To-daytheDemocraticparty;acesits formidablefoewithitscoffersfilledby themillionairefriendsofAl.Smith. Raskob,Kenny,Todd,representone hundredmilliondollars,pledgedby thesementothelastnickelfortheir friendtheGovernor.Thismakesthe 1928fightmoreinteresting,andtheresultmoreuncertainthananyfought inmanyyears.Theold-timetariff andfreetradedistinctionnolonger dividesthetwoparties.Asparties, itisdifficulttoseehowtheydiffer,if atall.Theissuesbeforethepeople arebestseenintheacceptance-addressesoftherivalnominees.Eachconventionissuedanationalplatform whichthecandidatesaccept,confirm ormodifyintheirspeeches-Letme addtheviewsofeachtakenfromtheir acceptanceaddresses,deliveredat PaloAlto,Calif.,byHoover,andat Albany,bySmith. U.S.A.isexperiencingwhatthe wholeworldissuffering.Noone wantstogoontheland.Thesons anddaughtersofthefarmer-stockare willingtoworkandslaveinthecities ratherthanendurethelifeonafarm. Theregularmonthlywageisaquicker return,andtherearemoreopportunitiestospenditinthecities.Farm labourersarescarceandusuallyunsatisfactory.Themarketreturnsareuncertainandinsufficienttoshowapro- fit."Totheland"isnotapopular .sloganfortheAmericanyouth,and therearefeweagertohearandfollow. Eventheimmigrantsonsoffarmers areunwillingtofollowtheonlylife theyhavebeentrainedfor.Theimmigrantnowpleadsthatheemigrated togetawayfromfarming.Farmreliefisanissueofdivision.RepublicansaredesertingHooverandDemocratsareleavingtheSmithranks.So farthehonoursareeven.Theforces thatwillcountinNovember,more thanthewordsoforators,istheprice ofcrops.ArthurEvans,ofthe"ChicagoTribune,"writesfromMinnesota that"everytimethemarketfallsoffa coupleofcentsthetalkofAlSmith growsstronger."Andthepricesare falling.Septemberwheatisselling inMinneapolisat1.10dollarsas against1.35dollarslastyear.Decembercornisquotedat73centsas against1.11dollarslastyear.This wheatpricemeansthefarmerisgetting90centsorlessatcountryelevators,andwiththefairnormalprice ratedat1.20dollars,90centsmeansa deadlossonayear'slabour.ThesituationisalarmingRepublicanleaders. TheRepublicanrecordisoneofinactioninthefaceoflongcontinuedand Hoover:"Areductionontariffwouldacutedistress.Itissevenyearssince injureeveryhome,wouldfillourthemaladybecameclearandduring streetswithidleworkers,andwouldmostofthattimehighadministration destroythereturnstoourfarmers." circlesfailedtoshowevensympathy.

TheHibernianHallwasthespotto whichallroadsleadonWednesday last,10th.inst.,whenHisGracepre- sentedtheCups,pennants,andtrophieswonduringtheyear.WhenHis Gracearrivedtherewasanattendanceofabout150,whichwasaugment- edduringtheevening.ThePresident(Mr.J.Edwards),inwelcoming HisGrace,thankedhimmostearnestly fortheassistancehehadrenderedto theAssociationsinceitsinception.Mr. Edwardssaidthat,althoughHisGrace hadonlyarrivedduringthemorning fromGeraldtonafteranarduousjourney,anddespitethepressureofbusinessconsequentuponhisabsence,he neverthelesshadfoundtimetohonour themeetingwithhispresence.Mr. Edwardsthentracedthegrowthof theAssociationfromfourclubs18 monthsagotothepresentmembership of13,includingthenewlyaffiliated clubfromtheCathedralParish,Hillstreet.ThePresidentsincerelythankedtheclergyfortheirassistanceinall parishes,aswithoutthehelptheyhad sofreelygiventheAssociationcould notpossiblyhavegrownthewayit had.Thankswerealsoconveyedto Mr.T.G.A.MolloyandMessrs.Carla Bros.,forthebeautifulcupstheyhad sokindlydonatedforcompetition amongtheaffiliatedclubsinthe"B" and"C"Grades,respectively.

Letitnotbesupposed,however,that Marywasahypocrite,bywhichwe understand"onewhoisanxioustoap pear,butnotsolicitioustobe."Upto apoint,shewasquitesincereinher devotions:buthavinganexcellent opinionofherself,shedidnotrealise herfaults,andthereforehadnot broughtherreligiontobearupon them.Asamatteroffact,andin commonwithsomanyothers,shemis tookthedelightwhichshefeltinher piousexercises,forpietyitself,and finallycametotheconclusionthat shehadamarked"vocation,"andmustbecomeanun. Oneday,afterlonghesitation,she wenttoFatherMorgan,andtoldhim herwish.Itisonherreturnfrom thatinterviewthatwenowmakeher acquaintance.
Now.ofcourse.FatherMorganhad donewhatanywisepriestwoulddoin sucharase-poured-coldwateronthe idea.Hewouldnaturallydothis inordertotestthegirl'shumility, obedience.andsubmissiveness-toset, inshort.howfarshepossessedthose
virtueswhichformthefoundationof thecloisteredlife.Itisonethingt.) applyalittlecoldwater,butquite anotherthingtodrenchthearden:desiresofayoungsoul,withaprolonged, icydouche.Andthisisprecisely whatFatherMorganhaddone.Mary hadgonetohimquitepreparedto hearhimadvisehertowaitforatime, butwhat'shewasnotintheleast preparedforwastheverystraighttalk towhichhehadtreatedher;forthe mercilessunmaskingofherself,ofhit prideandselfishness,andforthatnote ofcontemptwhichmarkedhisadvice totryandbecomeabetterChristian athome,beforesheindulgedinany thoughtsofthecloister.
Now,insteadofreturningfromthat interviewhumbled,Marywasseethingwithpassionateindignation.Herpride hadbeenverysorelywounded;hot tearsofdisappointmentandresentmentrandownhercheeks,andher wholespiritroseinangryrevolt.And thiswasthebeginningofthatweird crisisthroughwhichthepoorgirlwas destinedtopass.
ItwouldseemasthoughtheEvil Onehadlongsincemarkeddown Maryasaspecialprey.Withrare craftandsubtlety,hehadlefther unmolestedinherdevotions,nay,hailevenencouragedherinthem,whisper-ingsuggestionswhichfosteredspiritual pride.Perchance,hehadevengiven herbeautifulvisionsinthechapel, whichlayquitewithinhispower.Arse nowhecametoher,inherbitterdigappointment,andfedthefiresofrebellion,"Howurgingitsjustification. coulditbeexpectedthat FatherMorgan,asecular-VERYsecu- lar-priest,couldbeinsympathywith thereligiouslife?Therewasnot muchoftheasceticinthatportly frame,thatfat,jovialface,andboisterouslaugh!And,ofcourse,shewas awareofhisfrequentvisitstoThe Hall,wheretheSquirehadsucha choicecellar,andsuchverycharming daughters?No!Sheoughttoeon sultsomeholypriestwhowouldsee atoncethatshehadaveryrealvocation,andnotaccept,asfinal,thever- dictofonewhowassoutterlyincap- ableofappreciatingher."Andit wasnotlongbeforeallthispoison,so cunninglyadministered,begantotake effect.
WewillnotfollowMarythrough thenextfewweeks--weeksmarkedby alternatefitsofdepression,and strangesenseofelation,especiallyby adrynessofsoul,andafallingoffof piousduties-butwewillpassonat oncetothegreatclimax,whenSatan's hourhadcomefordeliveringhismaster-stroke.
Maryhadbeenspendingtheday withafriendwholivedafewmiles distant,overthemountain.During herlonelywalkhome,asnightwas falling,shehadbeenoccupiedwith herbitterreflections,whenshesudden lyrealisedthatshewasnolonger walkingonthehard,beatentrack,bu:onsoft,yieldingground.Although themoonwasshiningbrightlyina cloudlesssky,shecouldseenosignof thepathwhichshehadunconsciouslyleft;moreover,herwholesurroundings seemedstrangetoher.Maryhadab solutelynosenseoffear,asyet,for she tainshadknownandlovedthemoun allherlife,andhadfrequently takenthiswalkaloneinthemoon- light.
Therewasbutonepartofthisrug- gedmountainwithwhichshewasnot familiar,forshehadbeentaughtto avoiditbecauseoftheevilreputeof onewhodweltthere.Surely,shehad notunconsciouslywanderedthither! Whileshestoodwonderingifthiscould possiblybeso,shesawthatwhich morethanpuzzledher-itheldher spell-boundandaffrighted.Creeping stealthilytowardsher,upthemoun- tainside,wasasharply-definedmas, offog.Butitwasnoordinaryfog. Neverbefore,inherwholelife,hadshe seenanythinglikeit.Thiswasneither fognormist,norscuddingclouds,but adarkyellowishmassaltogetherun naturalandindescribablyhorrible.
Onandonitcame,crawlingonlike someshapeless,uncleanbeast.in height,itappearedtobeabouttenor twelvefeet,inbreadth,fiftyorsixty yards.ThenMarynoticedthatthe frontwasdeeplyconcave,makingtheendsappearforalltheworldlikearms outstretchedtoembraceher.
Withawildcryofterror,thepoor girldartedoffatrightangles,hoping thustogetclearofitspassage;but indoingsoshetrippedoveralarge stone,andfellheavilytotheground. Amomentlater,shefoundherselfen velopedinthefoulvapour,inhaling sulphurousfumes,andfromthemidst ofthedarknesscamestrange,weirdmusic,andsoundsofmockinglaugh ter-andthensheswooned.
Afteratime,shewasrecalledtocon sciousnessbyatouchonthearm,and avoicesaid-"Rise,andfollowme." Startingtoherfeet,andpeeringint,j thegloom,Marycouldjustdiscerna shadowyfigure,whichbegantomove fromher.Therewassomething aboutitthatfilledherwithanew fear,butfeelingthatitwasheronly hope,andthatthevoicewasonewhich mustbe-obeyed,shebegantofollow. Sheledthegirlintotheoneapart- mentwhichcomprisedthissolitaryabode.HereMarysawacheerful logfire,overwhichwassuspendeda steamingkettle.Inonecornerofthe roomwasacampbed;inthecentre asmalltable,andbythefireacouple, ofchairs.Withtheexceptionofa cornercupboard,thisformedthewhole stockoffurniture,norwasthereany thingonthebare,earthenfloor.The womanwasquitea-cheeryolddame, verybent,andverywrinkled;themost remarkablefeatureaboutherbeingher deep-set,darkeyeswhichseemedtJ holdone. "Cometothefire,andsitdown, lovie,andwarmyourpoorself.I've beenwaitingforyou,andhavegot thekettleboilin'togiveyouanice hotdrink."

That,ofcourse,excitedMary'scurio- sity,aswasintended,andshebegged tobeallowedtoseeit.Afterap- pearingtohesitateforsometime,the womanrose;drewthetablenearto thefire,andthentookfromthecup boardacrystal,aboutthesizecfan orange,andasquareofblackvelvet. Spreadingthelatteronthetable,and placingthecrystalinthemiddleofit, sheexplainedtoMarythatitwasby lookingintotheglassforafewminutesthatshecould"seethings.'

Beforetwelvemonthshadelapsen, Maryhadbecomeawreckofher formerself.Notonlyhadshewasted awaytoamereshadow,andbecome subjecttoterribleconvulsions,butshe wasamoralwreck,too.Shenowin dgedinthemostfilthyandblas-phemouslanguage.Whenevershe passedthechurch,whichshehadlong ceasedtoenter,shewouldinvariably spitatit,andutterfrightfulcurseson FatherMorgan.Bothheandherneighbourstriedtopersuadewidow Holttoputthegirlawaysomewhere, butthemotheeslovewasmuchtoo strongtoallowhertoconsent.One day,whenFatherMorganspoketoher inthe himchurch,-thepoorwomantook abackbysaying,"Isupposeyou know,Father,aswellasIdo,thatmy Maryis,justpossessedwithadevil."

Donninghiscottaandstole,the priestfirstkneltinsilentprayerby thebedside.Thatherealisedtheintensesolemnityoftheoccasionwas nowevident.Onthepreviousday, hehadspokenofitinamatter-of-fact sortofway,buthewasnowshaking withemotionasheremainedonhis knees,wrestlinginprayer.Onris"ing,thefirstthinghedidwastoplace acrucifixonMary'sbreastupon which,shewasseentotrembleviolently.Hethenproceededto 3ocinkte her,andthewholeroom,withholy water,andthiswasthesignalforfoul execrationsfromtheevilspirit.Then followedtheliturgicalprayers,dining whichthevoiceofthepriestwas scarcelyaudible.

Andnowwecometothemosttragic partofthisstrangestory.Allwent wellwithMary.Thegenerosityofthe SquireenabledwidowHolttotakeher rightawayforaconsiderabletime,and amidthenewsurroundings,shemade acompleterecovery,bothmoraland physical.Humbled,andsweetened, Marybecameatruehelpandsolaceto heroldmother.
Andhereweleaveher,foritisto FatherMorganthatwemustnowturn ourattention.
Fromthedaywhenhecastthedevil outofMary,hebecameachanged man.Notthatthischangewassudden,andatonceappreciable.Onthe contrary,itwasverygradualand subtle.Whenhehimselfwasforced toadmitit,heattributedittooverstrain--heneededachange,thatwas all.Incourseoftime,however,his parishionersbegantowhisperamong themselves:"What'scomeoverour parishpriest?He's joll" asheusedtobe."Or:"Thepoor manseemstohavesometroableon hismind.Wonderwhatitis."
Lateron,twothingswerenotedas beingparticularlyoddThedogsof thevillage,hisoldfriends,wouldgrowl ashewentby.And,stillmore strange,thechildren,whohadalways beeninthehabitofrunningupto him,andforwhomhehadalwayshad asmileandplayfulword,nowbegan toavoidhim.
HutperhapsitwasatTheHallthat thischangewascausingthemost anxiety.Atbridge,thoughafirstrateplayer,hewouldfrequentlylose hisheadcompletely,tothegreatannoyanceofhispartner.Again,inthe middleofconversation,hewouldsuddenlystartandlookroundinanervousway.Butwhatworriedthe Squiremostwasthewayinwhichhe lingeredonthere,aftertheladieshad retiredforthenight,andreplenishhis glassmuchtoooften.This,andthe factthathenowputinanappv.arancenearlyeveryevening,lefttheimpressionthatsomethingwasdistinctly wrong,andthathisstudyhadbecome unbearabletohim.

ever,wasthatthestonedidnotroll down,asifsuddenlydislodged,hutap peeredtoberaisedfromtheground byinvisiblehands,andhurledforward overtheedge.Andthen,whenit fell,therecameasavageexecrati)n, suggestingabaffledpurpose.
Tomakeassurancedoublysure, FatherMorganimmediatelyscaledthe rock,butsoughtinvainfortheauthor ofthisattack,foranattackitwasbeyondadoubt.Subsequentevents, however,leadonetowonderwhyhis unseenenemydidnotthenandthere cometogripswithhim.Perhapsthe priestwasthenunderaspecialprotectionwhichwassubsequently-indrawn.Butweareanticipating.
Thisoccurrenceconsiderablyupset FatherMorgan,asmaywellbeimagined:buthesoughtreliefforhistroubled thoughts,notinthesilenceorthe Chapel,butinthesocietyoftheSquire andhisfamily.
Sometwoorthreeweeksafterthis (allthesehappenings,bytheway, werefoundrecordedinhisdiary)the parishpriestwasonhiswaytoasick woman,togiveherViaticum.1he cottageforwhichhewasmakingwas somedistancedownanarrowlane,on eithersideofwhichwasahighhedge. Walkingslowlyonhisway,holdingin foldedhands,beneathhiscloak,the pyxcontainingthesacredHost,he saw,standinginhispathafewyards ahead,afigurewhoseattitudeproclaimedtheintentionofopposinghispassage.Atfirstglanceitappearedto beahumanform;butacloserlookrevealeditstruenature.Afteramoment'spause,FatherMorganquietly advancedand,whenclosetohisantagonist,raisedhishands.Bythis movementthecloakwasthrownback andthepyxrevealed.Atthesame time,hecried:"IntheNameofJesus Christ,depart!"But'erethewords werespokentheevilspiritdisappeared. Oneevening,aboutaweekafterthis, thedoctorwasreturningfromr.long roundofvisits-lettinghistiredhorse takehisownleisurelypace.Looking up,hesawasightwhichcausedhim todrawrein,andlookoninamazement.Ahundredyardsinfrontof him,gesticulatingstrangelyinthemiddleoftheroad,wasthepastor.But whatintheworldwashedoing?To allappearnceshewaswrestling-but withwhom?Noopponentwasvisible. Nowhefellbackalittle;nowlunged forward,witharmswildlybeatingthe air.Thenhethrewbackhisheadand, graspingathisthroat,tuggedatsome thingthere.Thedoctor,whohad cometotheconclusionthatFather Morganhadgoneravingmat,now urgedonhis.horse.Henoticedthat theanimalwassweatingprofusely,and tremblingallover;anditwasonly byafreeuse.ofthespurthatitcould beinducedtogoforward.Then,beforethedoctorreachedhim,thepriest wasseendrophishandstohisside, andfallbackwardtotheground.
Whenthedoctorreachedthesnot,it wastofindthepriestunconscious.At first,indeed,lifeappearedtobeextinct,butaftersomeconsiderable time,hecameround.Whenheopenedhiseyes,itwastogazeabouthim withalookofabjectterror;buthe couldnotbeinducedtospeakuntilhe reachedhome,andwaslyingbackin hischair.Hisfirstwordsthenwere:
"Doctor,I'vebeenatgripswiththe devil!Doyouhear?Withthe devil."
"Nonsense,Father.Buttellme exactlywhathashappened."
Then,solemnlypledgingthedoctor tosecrecyduringhislifetime,rather Morgantoldhim,littlebylittle,how thatanevilspirithadbeenpursuing himforsometimepast,andhadmade morethan,oneattemptuponhislife.
Onthepresentoccasion,hesaid,he waswalkingalongtheroad,andhad reachedthespotwherethedoctordiscoveredhim,whenhesuddenlyfound himselffacetofacewithhisghostly foe.Therewasdreadpurposeinhis evillook,andwithasnarlhetoldhim thatpurpose.Heannouncedhimself asthespiritwhichhadbeencastoutof MaryHolt,andhispurposewas-revenge.Inquiet,humbletonesthe priestwentontoconfessthat,apart fromhissomewhatworldlylife,there hadnotbeenfittingpreparationfor thesolemnriteofExorcism.The longprecedingfastandprayerwhich theChurchenjoined,hadbeenomitted.Theresultwasthat,whilethe devilwasboundtocomeout,inthe end,whenadjuredintheNameof JesusChristCrucified,hehimselfwas notproofagainsthisevilpower,but stoodexposedtohismalice.'Moreover,"addedthepriest,pridingiryself somewhatupontheachievement,and withholdingthegloryofitfromGod, Ithusrenderedmyselfadoublyeasy preytothedevilwho,oncomingout ofthegirl,mustotherwisehave'gone tohisownplace'butwasnowfreeto molestme."
Thedoctorlistenedwithgraveatten. tiontoallthis,butwasinclinedtore
garditmerelyasthedeliriumofa troubledmind.Thenhesuddenlyexclaimed:
"Sitstill!Iwanttoexamineyour throat."
He.hadhardlygivenitaglance, whenhebecameverygraveindeed, andwhentheinspectionwasover,he wasstrangelyexcited,andcried:
"GoodGod!Isupposethatsettlesit. Howghastly!Howtrulyhorrible!I mustnowbelieveyourstory,Father, andallIcansayis,Godhelpyou! Thosemarkswerenotmadebyhuman hands,and,moreover,THEYARE BURNTIN!"
Afewdayslater,FatherMorganwas founddeaduponthemountain.He hadbeenstrangled.
