TwentyCistercianAbbotsofFrance, Belgium,andLuxembourgwerepresentatthesolemnconsecrationofthe restoredabbeychurchofTamie,Savoy.Mgr.Castellan,Archbishopof Chambery,officiated,andanumberof otherbishopsparticipated.Civilauthoritieswerealsopresent.TheCistercianabbeyofTamiewasestablished inthetwelfthcenturyanddevastated attheRevolution.

Allthistime"God'sEnglishman" hadbeenfollowingwithachingheart thesadcourseofeventsdevelopingin hisowndistractedhome-landacross thechannel.Hecherishedtheambitiontobethere,breakingtheBread tothoseofhisfellowcountrymenfrom whoseheartsotherswerestrivingto wresttheirancientfaith.Onecan easilyimagine,then,withwhatjoy Campionreceivedthisorderfromthe FatherGeneraloftheSocietyshortly afterhisordination:"Makehasteand come,mydearestCampion from PraguetoRome,andthencetoour ownEngland."
Thehourofsacrificewasdrawing nightapace.Indeed,oneofhiscompanionsinreligion,thinkinghealreadybeheldCampionamongthe"FairchivalryofWhiteHorsemen, whorideonwhitehorses where theriversofParadiseflashandflow," naivelywroteabovethedoorofhis chamberthisbitofprophecy:"Pater EdmundusCampion,Martyr."
Inadditiontohisotheradmirable qualities,Campionmusthavebeenendowedwithadramaticgenius.For, togetherwithaJesuitlayBrothernamedRalphEmerson,whopassedashis "attendantgentleman,"Campion,undertheguiseofanenterprising jewel-merchant,andthealias"Mr. Edmunds,"succeededinevadingthe elaborateandwell-organisedspy-systemwhichwastheninfulloperation withthemaddeterminationofpre- venting"foestotheQueen'sreligion andfriendstotheoldFaith"fromenteringthecountry.CampionandBro. therRalphreachedLondonwithno furthermishapthanaverybadscare, andherejoinedtheirfellowJesuit, FatherParsons,whohadpreceded thembyafewdays.
Withtheassistanceofzealous friends,ahallwas'secretlyprocured forthefeastofSS.PeterandPaul, June29,1580;andthusCampionbegan hislabouroflovebypreachingtoa gatheringofsteadfastsoulswhostill hungeredforthetrueBreadofLife.In afewdays,however,inspiteofevery precaution,thewholecityhadheardof Campion'sreturntotheisle,andof thissermon.Andfromthenonthe Jesuitsbecamethehuntedofhuntedmen.Priest-huntingtookonarenewedzest.Campion,theJesuit! Theexpediencyofadoptingseparate fieldsofactivityimmediatelybecame evidenttothegallantapostolictrio. Onthe13th.ofSeptember,theSt.Louis"Globe-Democrat"printedaleading articleinwhichitpredicted,regardlessoftheissueoftheelection,thatthe presentcampaignwillmarkthebeginningoftheextinctionofreligiousintoleranceasaninfluenceinpoliticalaction.Butsuchopinionsareveryoften emotional.Sectarianismisdeep-rootedinAmericanpubliclife,andit somehow,notwithstandingtheprogressofdemocraticthoughtinAmerica,and theboostedwisdomofitspublicschools,hassurvived,andwillsurvive,attacks madeuponit.Oftenwhenapparentlymoribunditisgalvanisedintoactivity.HadGovernorSmithbeenaDowieiteoraHolyRoller,insteadofa RomanCatholic,hemighthavehadanuninterruptedandclearrunforthe tenancyofWhiteHouse.Inpart,the"Globe-Democrat"articlesays:
"ForthefirsttimeinAmericanhistoryaCatholichasbeennominated forthePresidencybyoneofthegreatparties.Thatthiscouldbedoneand thatthiscandidatecouldbesostronginpopularestimationastomakehis electionapossibility,areproofsofamarkedprogressinreligioustolerance. 'QuakersandCatholicsdifferedsofar,thoughinoppositedirections,fromthe opinionsgenerallyheldbytheEnglishpeople,thattheywerealikecondemnedbyeverybody,'saysJohnFiske,thehistorian,inhisbook,'The DutchandQuakerColoniesinAmerica.'Eventhewarmestadvocatesof toleration,'hecontinues,'werewonttomakeanexceptioninthecaseofCa tholicsandQuakers,whofordifferentreasonswereregardedashardlywithinthepaleofChristianity.'TheCatholicsforatimehadfreedomand securityinCatholicMaryland,whereofficialreligioustolerationbegan,and theQuakers,ofcourse,hadfullrightsandlibertiesinQuaker-ownedPennsylvania,andinDeleware,butasidefromthesecoloniesthebestthatthoseof eitherfaithcouldexpectwasareluctantandperiloussufferance.In1647 thePuritansofMassachusettspassed'severelavisfortheexclusionofCatholics.In1655theyenactedalawprovidingforthefloggingandimprisonmentofanyof'thecursedsetofhereticscommonlycalledQuakers'who mightbefoundwithinthecolony,andafewyearslaterthislawwasamendedtoprovideforpunishmentbydeath,underwhichstatutefourQuakers werehangedonBostonCommon."

"Stevensonandsomeofhisfriends attendedThanksgivingServiceinthe chapelonWednesdaynightandconfirmedthemiracle.Thestoryisthat onHogmanaylastStevensonwasridingacycleatThornbrae,Johnstone. Hewasroundingacornerwhenhis machineskiddedandhewasthrown overthehandle-bars.Afterbeing seenbyseveraldoctorsandreceiving treatmentinvariousinstitutions,he wassenttoCrookstonasincurable,his ailmenthavingbeendiagnosedasthat ofafracturedspine. Fromthatpoint,Stevensonsays,he wastakenintotheatoiningchapel, wherethesensationinhisfeetchanged tothatofanitch.Thelattergrewin intensityandbecamesoannoyingthat hehadtohavehisshoesandsocksre moved.Awomanwhowaspresent inthechapelaskedpermissiontorub andbathehisfeet,andbecauseof theseexercisescomfortwastosome extentrestoredtohislegs,andreturninghomehewascarefullyplacedon thefloorbyhisrelatives.Laterthat nighthesurprisedhiswife,whoisa Protestant,bywalkingacrossthefloor.

Becauseofhisintimateknowledgeof souls,thepriestknowshownecessary itisforchildrentoreceiveearlytrainingandconsistenttrainingintheway theyshouldtakethroughlife.At firstsightitwouldappearthatthe earlyyearsofachild'slifecancontain.nopitfallsandperilstoeternal salvation.Thisis,inasense,true, andfewchildrencommitmortal-sin; but,ontheotherhand,itisinthese yearsthathabitsbe_gintobeformed thatlaterbringforthanabundanceof fruitaccordingtotheirkind.Itis onlywhenthesefruitshavefullymaturedthatparentslearntheadvantage andtheabsolutenecessityofreligious training.Ifachildlooksupontruthtellingonlyasamatterofexepdiency, orpilfersaboutthehome,itisindicativeofatendencythatmustbecorrected,andtrainingsuchasisreceived intheparochialschoolsistheonly thingthatwillgivethechildtheright perspectus.

Somearguethattheycanonlybe inherited.A"gentleman"or"lady" cannotbeproduced,itissaid,ina singlegeneration.Thequalitiesthat gotothecreationofthesetypesisdue literallytobreeding.Oneofthecharacteristicsnotedinpeopleofthiskind isacertaineaseasofthoselongaccustomedtothepositiontheyhold. Howeverdemocraticallyinclinedwe maybewehavetoacknowledgea certaintruthinthis.Butisitnot possiblethataninstitutionwhichsacramentallyinoculateditsmembers 1,,7iththeBloodoftheKingofkings mightbeabletopassontothevery lowliestthisstrainofnobility?Should notanorganisationwhichhasmaturedthroughnineteencenturiesbeable toconferonthosebelonging-toitVat consciousnessofstabilitynotedin "gentlefolk"?Canwenotsupposethat aChurchwhichhasthepowerbybaptismtoendowcommonhumanitywith theprerogativesofdivinebirthshould therebyimplantsomethingthatshows itselfinthesuperiorbearingofthe faithful?Itisnofancifulsupposition thattheCatholicChurchdoesthese things.Ithinkitisopentoproof thattheCatholicwhoavailshimselfof hisprivilegesdisplaysatypeofmannersmoretrulyaristocraticthanthose whohavenothingbutthenobilityconferredbynaturalmeans.Suchpossessnotmerelyaninteriorgift,but onewhichshowsitselfinthatgraciousnessofspeechandactionwetermcourtesy.
Anotherwayinwhichgoodmanners maybe,tosomeextent,acquiredis thatofbecomingfamiliarwiththesocietyofthehighly-born.Environmentaswellashereditytellsinthese matters.Theword'courtesy'which Ihavejustusedimpliesthat.Itsuggeststhebearingofcourtiers,ofthose surroundingthepersonofroyalty.The respectduetothesovereign,theceremoniesincidentaltothelifeofcourts leaveanineffaceableimpressionon thoseconcerned.That,atleast,isthe implicationoftheterm.Buthere againtheCatholichasagreateropportunitytolearntruecourtesythan thosefrequentingthepresenceofearthlymonarchs.HeisinregularattendanceattheCourtoftheLordof Lords.ThepresenceofthatLordis not,hisFaithteacheshim,merelya spiritualonebutsacramental.Consequentlyourmannerofapproaching Godisdictatedbyaconsciousnessthat thebuildinginwhichweworshipis HisactualDwelling.Reverentbehaviourtakingtheformsmouldedby centuriesofdevotionmanifestourawe andlove.Ourworshipexpressesitselfnotonlyinarightintentionbut in,ceremonialconformitytotherequirementsoftheoccasion.Andthis coutlesyweshownotonlytoOurLord but,becausewearemetinHispresence,tooneanother-afactexempli. edbythekissofpeaceandtheincensingofthecongregation.Andhow obviouslythisaffectstheconductofall inattendance,irrespectiveofclass!A Catholiccongregation,speakinggenerally,isacongregationofgentlefolkTheirgarmentsmaynotbeofthemost fashionablecut,mayevenberagged, butthatseemstomakenodifference.Allranksarerepresentedbut socialdistinctionsarenotperceived. Forthetimebeing,atleast,richand poor,culturedandilliteratebelongto thenobilityandactassuch.
AthirdfactormakingforgoodmannersinthosewhocomeundertheinfluenceoftheChurchisthenatureof theidealshesetsforth.Reverence andhumilityholdaprimeplacein thatideal,asdoesalsocharity.Of charityitiswrittenthatshe"isnot puffedup,isnotambitious,seekethnot herown."Whenitisremembered thatitisloudself-assertivenessand vulgarambitionwhichareattheroot ofdiscourtesyitwillbeseenwhata powerfulfactorthisidealmaybe. Willingnesstodefertosuperiors,the fearofmakingothersuncomfortable byemphasisingone'simportanceand thegraciousnesswhichmakeseventhe smallestactofkindnessbeautifultheseareamongthecharacteristicsof thewell-manneredandthisisthevery typeofconductencouragedbyCatholicteaching.Sothatthecourtesy whichshouldandfrequentlydoes showitselfinthemembersofthat Churchissomethingmorethansurface polish.Itisinthebloodandisin-

separablefromtheveryspiritoftheir religion.Politenesshascometoberegardedamongsomeasasignofinsincerity.Becauseitissometimesseen intheworldasaveneercoveringuncharitablenessandallmannerofevil ithasbeensupposedthatisalwaysso Forthatreasonfoolishpersonshave gonetotheotherextremeandimaginedthatabrusquemannerbetokens honesty.Phraseslike,"aroughdiamond"conveytheimpressionthat roughnessisitselfavirtue.Butthat isanobviousfallacy.Becauseinteriorgracesareofgreatervalvethan theoutward.behaviourinwhichthey becomevisible,itdoesnotfollowthat thelatterisofnoaccountandcertainlydoesnotimplythatitisanadvantagetoappeardiscourteous.
TheCatholicpositioninregardto suchmattersisthereforeacorrective totwooppositeextremes.Itisacorrectivetothosewhoplacethewhole emphasisonwhattheycall"spiritual values,"discountingceremonialrespect,thegraciouscustomsofchivalry andthecultivationofcivility.We cannotthusdivorcebodyandsoul. Thereisabeautywhichbelongsto holiness,makingselfknowninspeech andaction,andwithoutwhichitisso muchlessholy.
Ontheotherhand,Catholiccourtesy,rootedasitisinourreligionand practised,notforthesakeofwinning thefavourofmen,butasanadequateresponsetothecourtesyofGod OurSaviour,isachallengetothose menandwomenoftheworldwhoimaginethatcharmofmannerisallthat isrequiredandwhocanforgiveany enormitiesifonlytheybecovered underaveneerofsocialpoliteness.

"Socialworkcannotfailtoreckon," hesays,"withtheproblemofincome andthecloselyalliedproblemofcontinuityofincome.Multiplysocial serviceagenciesandexpandtheirwork asyouwill,youcancontributevery littletowardthesolutionoftheproblemsofpovertywithoutamoreequitabledistributionoftheproductsofindustry.Solongasthewealthyuse theirpowertoincreasetheirwealth andtopaytheworkerslessthanliving wages,povertywillcontinuetoincrease.
"Excludingtheincapableandthe handicapped.wefindineverycityin theUnitedStateslargenumbersof wage-earnerswhoseearningsarenot sufficienttomaintainthemselvesand theirfamiliesinhealthanddecency. Thesituationisfurthercomplicated bytheindustrialhazardswhichare everstaringthewage-earnerinthefice andwhichthreatentocutoffhisincome.Atanytimetheworkerisliable tobeincapacitatedbyillness.andfrom theveryfirstdayofhisillnesshisincomeisusuallycutoff.Ifheisengagedinaseasonaloccupation,he willbeoutofworkforcertainperiods everyyear.Aslackeninginthedemandforaparticularproductora generalindustrialdepressionisliable toleavelargenumberswithoutpositions.
"Ifwearepermanentlytoimprove theconditionofthepoorandtopreventlargenumbersofwage-earners frompassingoverintotheranksof thepoor,wemuststriveearnestlyfor betterwagestandardsandtheprotectionofwage-earnersagainstindustrial hazards.
"Thepriestasaninterpreterof Christ'steachingwillrecognisethat manyofthewoundsofsocietythat areslowlysappingawaythevery vitalsofthepoorandtheweakcannotheremediedmerelybykindlyadviceormaterialrelife.Hewiltrealisethattheonlymeansofremedying oursocialevilsisbyawiderrespectfor humanrightsandhuman.dignityin alloursocialandindustrialrelations. The,twofundamentalChristiandoetrinesofthestewardshipofwealthand respectfortherightsofotherswill domorethananythingelsetosolve oursocialdifficulties.
"Charitymustgohandinhandwith theapplicationoftheprincipleofjusticeinsocialandindustrialrelations. Thosewhoareinterestedinpractical worksofcharitymusteverstrivefor theimprovementofsocialandindustrialconditionssothattheweaker classesmaybeabletobearlife'sburdensmoreeasily.Theministersof thegospelmustnotsatisfythemselves withpreachingthedoctrinesofcharity.Theymustalsopreachthedoctrinesofjustice.
"IfindustrywereorganisedonChristianprinciples,ifthewealthyandthe powerfulwerenotsomuchinclinedto utilisetheadvantagestheyenjoyin ordertodeprivltheweakoftheir heritage,'therewouldbefarlesspovertyandsufferingintheworld."

AtDerrynaneamemorialtoTomas Rua0Suileabhain,theKerrypoet, whowasacontemporaryandfriendof DanielO'Connell,wasunveiledbyMr. CormacBreathnach,inthepresence ofalargeaudience,lastAugust.
Dr.O'Brien,BishopofKerry,ina letterwishingthemeetingsuccess, sentaspecialblessingtothosewho hadworkedsosuccessfullytokeep thesongsofthepoetalive.Thecommemoration,hesaid,wasspeciallywelcomeinviewofthenearnessofthe celebrationofthecentenaryofCatholicEmancipation.
ThepanegyricwasdeliveredbyMr. J.Fenton,Senior.InspectorofNational Schools,towhoseeffortstheerection ofthememorialisprincipallydue. SpeakinginIrish,hesaidthatTomas Rua0Suileabhainsangoffaithand hopeinthefutureoftheGaeliccivilisation,andwentdownlikethousands ofothersbeforethedestroyingangel oftheGreatFamine.
O'ConnellactedasfathertoTomas Rua,frankedhimthroughaDublin college,butthecollegelifeoftheday wasasforeigntothepoet'ssoulasit wouldhavebeentoBrianBoru.The poetheldontohisownGaelicviews, brokeawayfromcollegeafterafew years,andfacedhisbelovedIveragh, nevertoleaveKerryagain.They foundhimadvisingthepeopleonevery occasionwheretheadviceofawise manwasneeded,fromtheduelof JohnO'Connelltohisungentleadviceastodealingwithtitheproctors.
ThemoralcharacterofO'Connell
wasgrosslyattackedsometimeago byapoetSenatorinDublin.There wasnotamanpresentwhodidnot knowinhisheartthatwhatTomas RuasangabouttheLiberatorasto hispietyandgoodnesswastrue.
Theweariedandhaggardshopassistanthadbeenkeptbusysolongby animportunatecustomerthateventuallyhedemanded:

"Certainly,"retohedthewoman.
