FeaturesofAustralianCatholicism
(MichaelD.Forrest,M.S.C.,in"America.")
Atthepresenttimetheeyesofthe CatholicworldhavebeenturnedtowardsAustralia,wherethetwentyninthInternationalEucharisticCongressjusttookplaceinthepresence ofamultitudeofAustralianandNew ZealandCatholicsandofdistinguished representativesfrommanyothercountries.Australiaisafar-flungcontinentandis,therefore,comparatively rarelyvisitedbypilgrimsortourists, atleastinlargenumbers,fromthe otherpartsoftheearth.Besidesthe questionofdistanceandexpense,such visitorswouldbeinclinedtoaskthemselveswhatshrinesormonuments, whathistoricalspots,whatextraordinaryscenesofbeautywouldbetheir recompenseattheendoftheirvoyage.
ComparedwiththeOldWorld,Australiahasnonationalshrines;comparedwithAmerica, shehasfewpointsof anyhistoricalinteresttotheoutside world.Herhistory,especiallyherreligioushistory,is,indeed,veryinterestingeventotheoutsider.Butitis notmypurposetoattemptanaccount oftheestablishmentandrapidgrowth oftheChurchinAustralia.Ishall limitmyselftoadescriptionofafew ofthecharacteristicfeaturesofAustralianCatholicism.
TheCatholicsofAustraliaaresubjecttothesameunjustsystemofeducationthatprevailsintheUnited States.Although,liketheAmerican Catholics,theycontributetheirquota tothesourcefromwhichpubliceducationisfinanced,theydonotreceivea pennyinreturntowardthebuilding, upkeep,ormaintenanceoftheirparish orsecondaryschoolsdespitethefact thatintheseschoolsthesecularinstructionimpartedisatleastequivalenttothatwhichisgiveninthepublic schools.
Inthismatter,however,Australian Catholicshaveconstantlypursueda moremilitantpolicythantheirAmericanbrethren.Withoutexpressingan opinionastowhichpeoplefollowsthe moredesirableoreffectivecourseof action,ImaystatethatAustralians arenotsogentleortimidincriticisingorattackingtheAdministration, StateorFederal.Catholiclaymen andpriestsinAustralia,andespecially prominentmembers hierarchy, consistentlyaddiesstheStateopenly andseverely,anddemand,notasa favour,butasanactofsimplejustice,thatthemoneytheycontribute intaxationforeducationbedevoted totheirownschools,oratleast,that theGovernmentreturnwhatisnecessaryfortheirmaintenance.
Still,humanlyspeaking,thereseems littleprobabilitythattheGovernment willharkentothisprotestagainstinjustice.Buttheconstant,publicprotesthashadtwoverysalutaryeffects: thenon-Catholicpublic,putasitwere onthedefensive,hasshownnodesire, asintheStatesofOregonandMichigan,totrespassfurtherontheeducationalrightsofCatholiccitizens,while theCatholicconsciencehasbeenso trainedandformedthatCatholicparentsinAustraliaregarditalmostas treasontotheFaithtosendtheirchildrentoasecularschoolwhereaCatholicschoolisavailable.

Thosewhohavetodealwithreligiousoreducationalmattersinthisgreat Republicrealisethatracialquestions areagreatproblem.Arecentmanifestationofracialconsciousnessinone sectionofthecountryinregardtothe establishmentofcentralhighschools andthedirectionofcertainmatters inracialparishesisastrikingillustrationofthispoint.
InAustraliaracialparishesand schoolsarepracticallyunknownfor practicallytheentirepopulationis Engish-speaking,andeightypercent. oftheCatholicpeople,whoconstitute twentypercentofthenationalpopulation,areIrishorofIrishorigin.The CatholicChurchinAustrliais,infact, apartoftheCatholicChurchtransplantedfromtheEmeraldIsletothe LandoftheSouthernCross.
NorhasthespiritoftheFaithsufferedinbeingtransplanted.Itisinevitable, humanlyspeaking, thatin thecircumstancessurroundingthe IrishCatholicswhomigratedtoAmericaandAustraliathereshouldbea certainleakagefromtheChurchamongstthemortheirdescendants, but whatofthewondrousfaithretained bythevastmajorityofthoseemigrantsandpassedonfaithfullyto mostoftheirdescendants?
AsthesplendidCatholicpeopleof America,springingfromvariousCatholicpeoplesofEurope,havegraduallyevolvedadistinct,thoughtruly Catholictype,sotheCatholicpeopleof Australia,descendingchieflyfromIrish stock,havegraduallystampedacharacteristicimpressontheCatholicism theycherishsodearly.Speakingon thismatterontheoccasionofthe Month'sMindforthevenerableArchbishopCarr,HisGraceArchbishop Mannixsaid:
"EssentialunityisthemoststrikingattributeofthetrueChurch.But withthatunitythereisalsoanendlessvariety.FortheChurchineach nationorcountrytakeson,asitwere, theformandcolouroftheplace,and thespiritandthegeniusofthepeople. AndsodifferentpartsoftheChurch haveeachitsowndistinctions,itsown goodqualitiesandcharacteristics, whicharenotfound,orarenotsoprominent,elsewhere.Australia,with Ireland'sfaith,hasgotinlargemeasurethebestqualitiesofIreland'sCatholicpeople.Bytheirfruitsweknow them,andCatholicAustraliahasgot aheritageofwhichwemaybejustly proud."
AustralianCatholicsobserveanabsolutealoofnessfromtheirProtestant fellow-citizensineverythingthatpertainstoareligiousorquasi-religious function.Notonlydotheynever participateinanykindofcolourless unitedreligiouscelebration,butthey simplyrefusetopraywithProtestants,eventhoughacommonformof prayerwouldbeused.Take,forexample,thecelebrationofAnzacDay.

Althoughintensebigotryprevailsin certainquartersinAustralia,themajorityofnon-CatholicAustraliansis, Ibelieve,fair-minded.In411civic, State,andnationalmatters,theCatholicsofAustraliaare,needlessto say,willinganddedIroustoworkin perfectharmonywiththeirProtestant fellow-citizens,whohaveoftenplaced onrecordtheirappreciationofthe sterlingcitizenshipandpatriotismof theCatholicbody.
Inreferringtothemilitantspiritof theChurchinAustralia,IshouldmentionthatCatholicstheremakeeffectiveuseoftheweaponknownasthe "indignationmeeting."Whenthere isaflagrantgrievancewhichcannot beadequatelyexpressedthroughthe columnsofthesecularpress,because thesecularjournalsareoften ingtopublishsuchmatter),an"indignationmeeting"iscalled.Tothis meeting,whichisannouncedfromall theCatholicpulpitsandthroughthe Catholicpapers,prominentspeakers, layandclerical,areinvited.Even fair-minded,fearlessMembersofthe StateandFederallegislatures,ProtestantaswellasCatholic,areoftenwillingtoattendandspeak.Specialresolutionsareformulated,andeach speakerisassignedhispart.Theresolutionsarethenputtothemeeting, carriedwithacclamationbytheimmensegathering,anddirectedtothe rightquarters.
Withoutinstitutinganyinvidious comparison,Istate,asasimplefact, that,ifAustraliastoodinthesame relationtoMexicoasdoestheUnited States,suchmeetingsofprotestwould longsincehavebeenheldinevery largecentrewithouttheslightestfear ofcriticising,embarrassing,orantagonisingthenationalAdministration.
