HissisterurgedhimtostayinLimerickandresthimselfuntilhefeltbetter,buthehaddeterminedtoreturn toCork.At6o'clockhissisterrecitedtheAngelus,andheresponded. TheMinisterforLands,inmakingavailablecertaininformationtheother daywithregardtoincreaseinpopulationfortheyear,givesnohopethatthe tideofimmigrationwillceaseuntiltheproblemofunemploymentisadjusted, forhetellsusthecontractwiththeImperialGovernmentmustbekept,and thisStatemustcontinue-toreceiveandabsorb15,000migrantsannually.That isnotveryconsolingtotheunemployed,norisitencouragingtothetaxpayer.Duringthelastfinancialyearwereceived11,000asaresultofimmigrationandnearly3,000ofthesewerealiens. Thecontinuedarrivalof aliens,theMinistersays,ismakingthetaskofGovernmentdifficulttoabsorb theBritishmigrants.What,then,doestheMinisterproposetodowiththe aliens?Hedoesnottellus.Theyarenotgoingontheland,andisnot theagreementwiththeImperialGovernmenttoplacetheBritishmigranton thelandandkeephimthere.Itsurelywasnotthedesignoftheframersof ourimmigrationpolicytoswampthelabourmarketsoftheStatesandtofill ourcitieswithout-of-works,unlesstheframersofthepolicyhadulterior viewsorwerestupidmuddlers-andwedon'tthinktheywere-thoughwedo thinktheyrushediptothematterwithoutfullygaugingtheresponsibilities theyhadundertaken.UnlesstheGovernmentcanbringaboutasuspensionof theannualflowofimmigrants,forawhileatleast,theyarecourtingserious trouble.ItwillnotbethecryoftheCommunistthatwillbeheardbeating etthedoorofGovernment,butanangryarmyof,discontentedmigrantsand anoutragedbodyofAustralianunemployed,supplementedbythosealienimmigrantswhoarealreadycausingdifficultytotheGovernment.TheresponsibilityofplacingtheBritishmigrantontheland,andkeepinghimthere, istheGovernment'sjob.ButwhatishappeningisthatthemigrantisfindingcomfortablejobsinthecitytothedisadvantageofAustralians.Immigrationfrombeingthebl&sipgitwasanticipatedtobecome.isnotworkingout acordingtoplans-andbeforelongwefearitwillbegivingheadachestoits promoters.Recentlysome600alienswereatFremantle;thisStatereceived itsunwantedquotaofthem.Thesepoorgwretcheswillhavetofaceworse hardshipsofunemploymentthanourownpeople,andmanywhohavegone tothecountryandarewillingtcworkarebeingtoldtheymuststandaside in.theinterestsoftheBritishmigrant.Itisreasonableaccordingtotheterms oftheagreementwiththeImperialGovernment,butifthereisnoworkfor aliensintheStatewhyaretheynotpreventedfromcominghere?Itisnot goodpolicytooverloadthelabourmarketofacountryandtobreeddiscontents.ItseemstousthiscountryisbecomingaBritishdumpforitsunemployedlabour,andthesoonerAustraliansrealisethatfactthebetter.We gcfurtherandsaythatAustraliaisbecomingthedumpoftheunemployed labourofothercountries.Whatis,theFederalGovernmentgoingtodoto avertthemenaceofindustrialstagnationandperhapsanindustrialrevolt?
ItisonlyfairtosaythatourCatholicsocietiesaredoingtheirbestwith thelimitedmeansattheirdisposaltorelieveurgentcasesofdistress.MembersoftheSt.VincentdePaulSocietyarezealousintheireffortstofind fiKidaridclothingforthepoorandaredoinggreatworkintheirparticular sphere.TheCatholicImmigratiorSociety,weunderstand,isbusytoowith itsspecificwork,butourCatholicwelfareworkwefeelneedsorganisation. Toomuchisleftto,theparishpriestandtheconventtodoinrelievingdistress.Ournuns'andpriestshaven'texhaustlesstreasuriestodrawupon-and somehowourneedypeoplethinktheyhave.InayoungcountrylikeAustralia thereshouldbenoreasontomakeappealsforthereliefofdistress,butthe poorwe'alwayshavewithus.Afteralltheexpensivepublicityabroadto increasetheflowofimmigrationtothiscountry,thedemonstrationsofunemploymentthroughouttheCommonwealthshouldbehumiliatingtoourlegislatorsandpublicmen.TheyarecertainlyareproachtoAustralianGovernment.ArchbishopMannix,referringtotheproblemofunemploymentrecently,atNorthcote,Victoria,saidhewoqdliketoseeabodyofscientists appointedtogiveearnestattentionandconsiderationtothesolutionofthe problem.Theconclusionsofsuchabody,hethought,wouldmostlikely havefar-reachingeffects.Thesuggestionisworthtryingout.Foravery longwhilethepoliticianshavebeentinkeringwiththeproblem-perhapsour scientistsmightelucidateit.Anyhowitwillbeworkworthyoftheattenfion ofgreatmindsandworththeirtrying.

OnthefirstHolyThursday,Our LordofferedupthefirstMass.Op thisnightalso,Heordainedthefirst priestsandconsecratedthefirstbishops."Dothisforacommemorationof Me."(Luc.22.19).
OnthefirstGoodFriday,Jesusgave HislifefortheRedemptionofthe world.TheMass,whichisofferedin ourchurchesto-day,istheself-same SacrificeasJesusofferedonMount Calvary.Themannerofofferingis different,buttheSacrificeisoneand thesame.Thismayseemdifficultof understanding,butanexamplewill makeitclear.Apersonmaysleepat night,workinthemorning,andeatin theevening.Itisoneandthesame personwhosleepsworks,andeats, andhisactionsareonlydifferent modesofhispersonality.Ifitis furtherobjectedthatOurLord's DeathonCalvarytookplacetwothousandyear'sago.andthatitisdifficulttounderstandhowtheMassofferedto-dayisthesameasOurLord's Death,itmaybeansweredthatthe Sacrificeineachcaseisthesame,but themannerofofferingisdifferent. -ThisisMyBodyWhichisgivenfor you.ThisistheChalicetheNew TestamentinMyBloodWhichshall lieshedforyou."(Luc.22.,19..20). Awarriormaydrivetheenemyfrom hiscountry,andmaketreatywithhis adversary,guaranteeingthatthelatter wouldneveragaininvadetheterritory.Thedocumentwouldbesigned andsealed.andwouldlastforall time,andwouldevenbindtheilsuccessors.DuplicatesofthisdorcMiklent mighthemade.andmightbegi,itinto allthechiefmeninthecollihtry. Theseduplicateswouldhavethesame ',indingforceastheoriginaldocument.andwouldbeasefficaciousas thefirst.Thevariousdocuments wouldonlybedifferentwaysofmanifestingthefirstvictoryandthefirst agreement.TheMassandCalvaryare alsodifferentmodesofthesameSacrifice.
WhenwerememberthattheMass asefficaciousastheDeathofJesus onMountCalvary.wemayheableto :"oriiisomeideaofItsvalue.Jesus wasGod,aswellasman.ItwasGod whodiedonModFridayforoursalvation.Andwhatadeathwasthat ofJesus'Wemaymeditateonall thesufferingsofOurLordduringHis Passion,buttheirextentissogreat that.thehumanmindisunabletofathomthem.ButthesetormentsenluredbytheSaviourwereofferedfor smiloneofus.Thegoodthief.on thatday,askedforaremembrance, andheobtainedParadiseonthedayof ,aisdeath.Norneedwehesurprised thatasingleprayerofferedonCalvary wasabletoobtainsogreatafavour. TheGod-ManwasofferingHisLife forthegoodthiefinparticularaswell asforeachsoulinparticular.The theifhadonlytoexpressadesire cuethefruitsofOurLord'ssufferingsandhisprayerwasthemanifestationofhisdesire.0
Prayeristhemanifestationofawish toreceivefavours;andthisrequest forgracespreparesthesoulfortheir reception.ManyotherswereconvertedonthefirstGoodFriday,who,perhaps,offerednoprayer,butwhose heartsweresoftenedatthesightof JesussufferingsopatientlyandprayingforHisexecutioners."Thisneed notcausesurprise,becauseJesuswas dyingforeachandoneofthem.
At\theMass,ourprayersandour goodwillareaspowerfulasthoseof thegoodthief,orofthosewhostood roundtheCross.But,apparently, veryfewrealisethepoweroftheMass, otherwiseourchurcheswouldbe crowded,andmanymorewouldreach salvation.OnCalvary,onlyafew prayed.OurLadyprayedforthose roundtheCross,andprobably,her prayersobtainedtheconversionofthe centurionandofmanyothers,onthat day.AtMass.wehavethesameopportunityasOurLadyhadofobtainingtheconversionofsinners,byofferingthePreciousBloodforthatintention.
Ifwehaveanydoubtsaboutthe efficiencyoftheMasstoobtaingrace, letusreflectonwhattakesplaceat theessentialpartsoftheSacrifice.The priest,atthemomentofSacrifice, offersallthesufferingsofJesus;and OurLordHimselfpleadsforus,with HisOpenWounds,HisParchedTongue,HisDesolationofSpirit,andHis UnspeakableLoveforsouls.When weofferourpetitionsatMass,they arepresentedtoourHeavenlyFather withalltheefficacyoftheDeathof JesusontheCross.Thismeansthat, oneprayerofferedatMass,isworth hundredsofprayersofferedatother times.Somesaythattheycanpray aswellathomeasatMass.Yes,they mayprayaswell,butnotwiththe sameefficiacy.Couldonepennypurchaseasmuchasathousandpounds? Thepennyisgoodasfarasitgoes,but itbecomesofverylittleaccountwhen comparedwiththethousandpound note.Ourprayersathomearegood buttheyareofsmallvaluewhencomparedwiththoseofferedduringMass.
Everydaywemeetpeoplewhoare complainingoftheirwantofmany things.Somewanttemporal,and othersspiritualfavours.Somewish toovercomesometemptation.Others wanttoherelievedfromsomeanxiety. Ifthesepeopleonlyknewthepower andtheefficacyoftheHolySacrifice, theywouldsoonobtainalltheirdesires.Happilythisworldhasmany holysoulswhoareanxioustodoall theypossiblycantopromoteOur Lord'sInterests.TheSacredHeart ofJesusasksustopropagatethe Truthandconveygracetosouls.Our LorddiedontheCross:but,forthe greaternumberofmankind,HisDeath isoflittleuse.eitherbecausetheywill netacceptHisBlessings,or,because theyknownothowtosecuregraces gainedforthembyHisPassionand Death.DevotiontotheMass,even tothepartofOurLord'sfollowers, wouldbringtheblessingsofRedemp

SOmehearMasswithlittledevotion,becausetheydonotrealisethat theMassandCalvaryarethesame.At themomentofConsecrationinthe Mass,ifwewouldonlyplaceourselves inspiritwithOurBlessed.Ladyand MaryMagdalene_attheFootofthe Cross,andthereofferthePrecious BloodofJesusforourintentionsand fortheconversionofsinners,howpowerfulourprayerswould-be,andhow manysoulscouldwenotsnatchfrom thebrinkofhell.Everydaywehear_ Mass,wecouldsavethedyingonthat daybyprayingduringtheHolySacrificeforthesalvationofdyifigsinners throughouttheworld.Wemaywish forfavoursforourselves.TheSacredHeartisonlytooanxioustobestow'allkindsofblessingsuponus; hut,alas!oursoulsarenotdisposed toreceivethem.Watercannotpass throughachannelthatischokedwith earth,andneithercangracepass throughoursoulsiftheyarefilledwith worldlyaffectionsanduselessanxieties.DuringtheHolySacrificeofthe Mass,thePreciousBloodwillbepouredoversoulstopurifythemforthe receptionofallkindsofgracesand blessings.
TheBlessedEucharististheoutcomeoftheresourcefulIntellectof JesusandtheLoveofHisSacred Heart.TheSacrificeoftheMassgives ustheBlessedEucharist.Through theMass,theMeritsofthePassion areconveyedtomankind.TheMass givesusJesus,and,throughthismystery,wereceiveHimasoursupernaturalfoodinHolyCommunion.It leavesJesusinourTabernacles,and ItbringsHimtousatthelastmomentofourlives,inHolyViaticum. ThroughtheMass,Jesusisenabledto blessusduringtheceremonycalled Benediction.Howcanweeverthank JesusforleavingusthisgreatTreasure?Thebestwaytodosoisto showourgratitudeforsogreatafavourbybeingpresentatMassasoften aspossible,andbyprayingduringthe SacrificeforwhatMaryprayedonCalvary-theconversionofsinnersand thespreadofthefaith'.
CatholicEmancipationin Sweden
TheSwedishLegislaturehasunder considerationaBillwhichproposesto sweepawaymanyofthedisadvantages whichCatholicsinthatcountrylabourunder.Shouldthemeasureof emancipationpass,theChurchinSwedenwillbepermittedtoestablishconventsandmonasteries.TheauthoritiesoftheStateChurchareopposing theBill.
ArchbishopSoederblom,oftheState Church(Evangelical),replyingtothe SwedishGovernment'senquiryregardingtheproposedBillforenlargingfreedomofworshipinthekingdom,declaresthatthemovementhasa"Romantone."Hecontendsthatthe membersoftheofficialCommitteeof AuthoritiesonReligiousFreedomare notsufficientlyprotectedagainst "Romishpropaganda"andthatthe
oneidea-oithe-CatholicChurchat thepresenttimeistocounteractthe benefitsderivedfromthe"Reformation."
ThedraftofthecontroversialBillis theresultoftwoyears'studyonthe partofthecommitteemembers.AlthoughtheBillwouldnotbecompletelysatisfactory,ifadopted,it would'continuetopresentvirtual monopolyoftheEvangelicalChurch. Nevertheless,theoutcomeisofno littleimportancetoCatholics.
Underthepresentlaw,itisnecessarytoappearinpersonbeforethe properStateofficialtobeexcusedfrom membershipintheStateChurch,but thenewlawwouldrequiremerelythat aletterbewrittentothelocalpastor. Underexistingconditions,agovernmentofficialoremployeeloseshis positionifheseversconnectionwith theStateChurch,exceptbyspecialapprobationoftheking.Theproposed BillwouldrequireonlytheMinisters ofPublicWorshipandofJusticeto hemembersoftheEvangelicial Church.
Whereasreligiousschoolshavebeen permittedtoexist,itwasnecessaryto obtainpermissionfromtheGovernmenteachautumn,andsuchpermit sioncouldbe.denied,althoughsuch hasnotbeen.thecase.Itisagainst thetawforProtestantchildrentoattendCatholicschools.
Therehasbeenmuchdissatisfaction heretoforeoverthespecialchurchincometax.Itissuggestedthatthe portionofthetaxessetasideforpublicworshipbeproratedamongstthe severaldenominations.
Ifthenewlawisadopted,Catholics andJewswillhaverightsthathithertohavebeentheprerogativesofProtestantsonly.TheywouldbepermittedtograduatefromtheState Seminaryandallnationalandpublic rihoolc,and'couldbeeligibletoteach insuchschools.
Themostimportanteffectuponthe CatholicChurchwouldbetheenjoymentoftherighttoacquireproperty, eitherbypurchaseorgift,without havingtogetspecialpermissionfrom theCrown.Since1914,theChurch hasnotbeenallowedtoacceptdonations.Furthermore.conventsand monasteriescouldagainbeestablishedprovidedtherewerenocloisters.Religiousorderswouldbeallowedto conductschools,hospitals,orphanages, andasylums.
0-iorto1911amarriageceremony performedbyaclergymarrofanydenominationwasconsideredacivilcontract.butsincethattimeacivilceremonyhasbeenrequiredregardlessof whethertherehasbeenareligious ceremony.TheproposedBillforrefreedomwouldputaciviland areligiousmarriageceremonyonthe samebasis.
ThenewBillisbeingfoughtbymost oftheadherentsoftheStateChurch, especiallysobecauseitwillcurtail churchincome,ifitgoesintoeffect, butthemembersofotherdenominationslookuponitasastepinthe rightdirectiontowardsrealreligious freedom.
