TheIgorottereligion,likethatof allprimitivepeoples,isbasedonthe superstitiousfearofevilspirits.At Baucothepeopleinvokethespiritsof theirenemiesslaininwaraswellas thoseofmembersoftheirfamilies,the ideabeingtopracticediplomacyin ordertoreducetoaminimumtheillwilloftheAnitos(spirits).Allnatureispeopledbyspirits:thereareanitosintherivers,inthestars,beneath themudofthericefieldsaswellasin thethatchofthecabins.ThevillageofBontocholdsinspecialvenerationawoodofagedtrees,itistheir sacredwoodinwhichthespiritsdwell, andwoetothesacrilegiousonewho woulddaretofellasingletree.A terribledeathwouldovertakehimon theinstant.

Britainisintheruckofageneralelection.Thepoorman'stable,and theworkingman'swifeandhousekeeperwillcomeintothelimelightunder thepoliticians'searchingcriticism,andtorrentsofeye-washwillbepoured outadlib.Thefactorygirlwillbenoticedbymylady,theelectiontout. Thehard-drivenworkingmanwillbesmiledupon.sympathisedwith,pitied andcourtedforhisvote.Therewillbeawonderfulunbendingofthesuperiorsocialelements-alevellingofhumanity,sotosay,andthevoiceof the"patriots"will,ineversomanyinflections"fromgravetogay,fromlivelytosevere,"torturetheearsandconfoundthevoter.Suchapushinghere andafussingtheretherewillbeoveroldworn-outshibbolethsthatthe DominionmenwhocamedownuponLondonTownwillnotbeover-praisedforUs@upsettheyleftbehindthem.It'snice,however,tothinkwe arepartnersintheEmpire,andthatMr.BaldwinandhisGovernmentis welldisposedtowardsournecessities.

Thereisasincalled"whispering,"whichisdefinedintheCatechismof theSummaasonethat"attacksourneighbourbyseekingdirectly throughdishonestandinsidiousspeechtosowdiscordandcreatemisunderstandingbetweenthosewhoareunitedbythebondsoffriendship." The"whisperer"isonlytoocommon.Wefindhiminalmosteveryneighbourhoodandinpracticallyeveryinstitution.Sometimeshehasbeenat thejobof"whispering"solongthathegiveshardlyasecondthought,to thematter,butwhilehisconsciencehasthusbeendeadened,theunfortunateeffectsofthisworkgorightahead.Friendsaremadeintoviolentenemies;newacquaintanceshavesuspicionssownthatmaylastforeverafterwards.
AsquithandLloydGeorgeareagainassociated,andhaveissuedjointlya manifestototheelectorsofBritain.Thetwostatesmenintheonepolitical bed,arcanill-assortedpair.LloydGeorgewilllookafterhiniself,that's certain,andwhenwintercomes_webethe'llhavethebiggestshareofthe warmth.ShouldtheLiberalswin,whowilllead?Itisinterestingto readthe"manifestos"nowbeforetheelectors,andtonotewhatlittle changethereisinthepoliticalthoughtofthepartyheadsoftheLiberals andConservativessincealongwhileago.Theyarepickingattheold roastedboneswhichwereserveduptocatch.thegrandfathersoftheBritish electorsofto-day.Theredoesn'tseemtobemuchoriginalityinBritish politics.WhatBritainisachingforisanewgenerationofstatesmen. RamsayMacbonaldandtheDominionstatesmen,throughtheImperig,1Conference,mighthelptochangethetrendofpoliticalthought withinthenextfewyears.ThecompromisemadebyPrimeMinister EaldwinwithChamberlainandBirkenheadshowsthattheConservatives aredriventobeonthedefensive,andarenottoocertainofagritvictoryovertheiropponents.
ThepoliticalcampaigninEnglandpromisestorecordthemightof womenasagalvanicbatteryinthepoliticalsphere.Thethreeprincipal partieshaverecognisedhervalueasapropagandist.WhereLabourisvery likelytogainimportanthelpwillbeinthemassedstrengthofitswomen workers.ThesearenomeretrimmingstotheLabourmovement;theyare earnest,reliableauxiliaries,whoseintelligentinterestintherealpractical issuesbeforetheelectorsarenotofrecentweeks,butcoveralongwhile. Fromtheworkers"homesinEnglandaregraduallygrowinganarmyof earnestvolunteersthatwillbebeforeverylongausefulandcompactforce againstwealthandprivilege,andthisnewforceinBritishpoliticswillconsiderablystrengthentheinfluenceofBritishLabourindirectingthetrend ofGovernmentpolicyinthenextParliament.Whatevertheissueofthe electionsmaybe,Labourissuretoholditsown,foritistheonlybodythat isnotunsettledbyjealousrivals.
ThememberforNorthPerth,Mr.MacCallumSmith,recentlyvisited thePope,statesanewsnoteinthe"DailyNews."AllimportantpersonagesvisitingRomenow-a-dayslookforanaudiencewiththeHolyFather, andarenothappyuntiltheygetit.Wecongratulateourcontemporary,the SundayTimes,"onthetoleranceandcourageofitsrepresentative.His audiencewiththePopewillprobablydisturbthebigotswhoarerespon- siblefortheP.F";scatch-cry,"AwakeAustralia."Weexpecttohear somemuddyreflectionsonitfromthoseaggrievedsoulswhowereincensedbytheKing'svisittotheVaticanandtheHolyFather.Reallythegreat- estfigureintheworldto-dayisthesuccessorofSt.Peter,andhisvoiceis alwaysheardinworldaffairs,eventhoughitisnotpleasanttothebigots' ears.WonderwhatthePopeandMactalkedabout.
ThePeaceofEurope
ThegreatChristianfestival,whichrightdowntheageshasbeenthe connectinglinkbetweentheworld-widebodyofChristendom,willsoonbe celebratedbytheChristianworld.ThebirthdayoftheChrist,whichwas heraldedacrosstheskiesbyAngelicvoicessingingpeaceonearth,each recurringyearremindsusofourdutyasbelieversinHisGospelofBrother. hood,whichisbuiltuponthebasicprinciplesofthethreecardinalvirtues oftheChristianlife-Love,Charity,Justice-andwhichshouldactuatenot onlyourdomesticintercourseincivilaffairs,butwhichshouldbetheguidingandcontrollingfactorsinthoselargermattersofpolitywhichareassociatedwithinternationalrelations.Themorallawswhichweremadeto guideindividualsintheircommonintercourseonewithanotherwerealso intendedfortheobservanceofthenations.OurWesterncivilisationrests uponthem,andthenationsmaynotoverthrowtheirinfluencewithout corruptingthechannelsthroughwhichsocialorderandthewellspringsof nationallifereceivesustenanceandvitality,evenmoretheymaynotattempttoputasidethesemoralforcesasexhaustedandobsoleteelementsin mundaneaffairs,merebaubleswithwhichthepriestandtheteachermay juggletohoodwinksociety,withoutthreateningthedestructionofthe wholefabricofcivilisation,anddestroyingitscomplexstructureall dreams,aspirations,struggleandachievementthroughmanycenturies.
Inoursurveyofto-dayworld's:interestswenoticeastrongtendencyto cantaboutLiberty,HumanProgress,andPeaceinthetermsofthemoney lenderandthesocialiconoclast.ThephilosophyoftheCountingHouse andtheStockExchangearereplacingthoseethicalteachingsofthegreat Master,whichhavebeenrecognisedbyChristianpeoplesaspropellingfattorsinhumanachievementsincealmostthefoundationofChristianity. Thecryofthenon-religiousprogressiveinthisthefirstquarterofthe 20th.centuryis"awaywithReligion;awaywithitsrestrictionsanditsfettersonthehumanmind;Religionistheopiumofhumanity,"andaschemingrabbleofpoliticalrascalsopenly,defiantly,andshamelesslybroadcast theirinfamouspropagandaunderthemaskofabenevolentattempttoraise whatisknownasDemocracytoasuperiorandsovereignplaceintheeconomyofInternationalism,byarecastofthewholestructureofourmodern socialorder.Alreadythereareterribleinstancesoftheconsequencesof thisdestructivetendencytodisruptChristianityandtodestroyitsteachings.TheodiousnessoftheRussianattempttosweepawaythestandardsofChristiannationsandtoimposeanewsocialcreedupontheworld haswethinkandhopeopenedtheeyesofacomatoseworld,andgalvanised itintoactiontodefeatthewickedintentionsoftheNorthernnationalbandit.
TherootcauseofallEurope'stribulationsto-day,followingonthe wreckandruinofwar,isthedriftthatcommencedaftertheTreatyofVersaillesfromthemoralstandardoftheGospels-Charity,Justice,Brotherhood.Apeaceuncementedbythesefundamentalessentialscouldnotbut failtorestoretheworldtorationalandsaneways.Tohopeforthereign ofjustice,wheretheFountofJusticewasdestroyed;toexpectlawandwisdomtorunwheremoralityandreligionwereregardedasdruggersofthe 'humanconscience;tohopeforcharitywherecharitywaswavedasidewith anobscenejest,ortoanticipateotherthansocialchaosfromasocial changewhichheldChristuptoobloquyandtrampledHisDivineRevelationundervenemousheels,wouldbetodistorthumanintelligence,andto stultifyGod'sgiftofreason.Untilitisrecognisedthatasuperiorforce .controlsthedestinyofnations,asalsothewaysofmankind-thatbehind allhumanobjectives,plansandmotivesthereisaGodofJuiticewhowill rewardthegoodandpunishthewicked,andthatHisjudgmentscannotbe defeated,itisavainandfruitlesseffortonthepartofnon-religiousprogressivestoattemtptorehabilitatesocietyandtoliftitfromthechaotic stateintowhichithasdrifted.Internatiolialismto-daytalksnotofGod, butitcantsmuchofpeaceandprogress,andhumanrightswithoutHim. Wehavenotadvancedonereallysecuresteptowardsthatsereneday whenthenationsshalljoinhandsandgivethegladwordsofpeaceand friendshiptoeachother.Theworldmayneverreachthathappyday,becausetheworldishumanandnotdivine,butwemayhopeatleastinthe restorationofGodtoHisproperplaceintheworldtocomevery,neartoa ChristianerainwhichJustice,CharityandBrotherhoodwillhaveasecure anddominantholdontheintercourseofnationwithnation,andmanwith man.
TheMadMaresBundle
ThemovementmadebyHugoStinnes,theGermancoalmagnate,and hisfellowmagnates,tosweattheGermancoalworkerbyextendinghisworkinghourstomakegreaterprofits,wasabrutalattempttoextractfromthe coalminersoftheRuhranunreasonablecontributiontothewartax. Stinnesandhisfellowshavebeenmadetorealiseperemptorilybythe FrenchauthorityintheRuhrthattheirthreattoclosedowntheirconcerns iftheworkers'hoursarenotextendedwill,ifcarriedout,bemetbya lo.igtermofimprisonment.Theseiron-handedemployers,with100per cent.profits,showupverymeanandpaltrywhencalledtoshoulderthe burdensoftheFatherland.LiketheJunkerstheystillimaginetheGermanworkmentheirchattel-thewonderisthattheGermanworkmanstill retainsanyregardfortheoverlordswhoaided,abetted,andcontributedto themakingofthewarthatwasmeanttodestroyFinance.Whatever France'sfaultmightbebybeingintheRuhr,humanelyspeakingtheGermanJunkerandoverlordsofthecalPireofHerrHugoStinneshavelittle reasontocomplain.Theywouldhavebeenverymuchworseoffhadthe AlliesmarchedtoBerlin,orhadFrancebeenpermittedtoannexthe RuhrandtheAllieschosenamoredrasticpunishmentthanamoneyindemnity.WhenwereadthattheGermanGovernmenthasresolvedtoplace theentirestrengthofGermaneconomiclifeasaproductivepledgeatthe serviceofeverysolutionofthereparationsproblemwhichguaranteesGermany'sindependenceandherfutureeconomiclife,wewonderisittheintentionoftheStresemannGovernmenttomaketheGermanworkmanthe asstocarrythereparationsbundle.IftheStresemannGovernument meanswell,letitdisciplinetheGermanJunkerandtheGermanindustrialbosses,andabeginningwillbemadetowardsthesolutionofthe Fatherland'stroubles.

Asplendidsceniceffectwasachievedbythenumberofgorgeousdresses. glitteringjewels,andsceptres,while thewandsbornebytheirfairyownersseemedtrulyfullofmagic.The pieceteemedwithlifeandlaughter, musicandsong,thegloomyinterventionoftheogreonlycontributingtoheightenthejoyandlightofthe scenesthatfollowed.MissAngela Cooperportrayedwithstatelygrace thepartoftheFairyQueen,whileMiss MignonJagolookedeveryinchaPrincess.Nolivingprincessevermoved moregracefully,sangmoresweetly,or boresorrowmorebravelythandidthis lonewandererintherealmsoffairy andgnome.MasterJ.Richardson, herbridegroomandrescuer,acquitted himselfinamannerdeservingofno lesspraise.OnlyanOgrehimself couldhaveequalledinfearfulappear. ancehisprototypeonthestage,Miss LornaBriggs.TheSpriterepresentedbyMasterSydneyHilton,playeda veryhumorouspart,whilstmuchgrief andwoewasalleviatedbytheinterventionof,theLily,Daisy,Snowdrop, andVioletiFairies,inthepersonsof iheMissesLancaster,Edelman,Kinane,andHungerford.

IntheMonasticsystemoftheCatholicChurch.wehaveaninstitution, moreancientbymanycenturiesthan anyoftheseorganisations,anditpresentstousamostinvitingstudy,as beingavigorousinstitutioninour owntimes,whilestretchingback throughallthecenturiesoftheChristianera,totheverydaysoftheApos"4 des.
Alive,vigorous,andexpanding,the MonasticsystemoftheChurch,stands sheerandfairbeforetheworld,after fourhundredyearsofcalumny,and suppression,asOurSaviouroncestood beforeHisenemies,challengingthem withthewords:"1havewroughtmany goodworksamongyou,andforwhich ofthesewouldyoustoneMe?"
ThemodernreligiousOrders,sowell knowntous,areactivelyandsuccessfullyengagedinworksofmercyand charity,whichreducetopracticethat sideoftheGospelteaching,which concernstheloveoftheneighbourand theserviceofmankind.Weareall familiarwiththebeneficentactivities ofourpresentdayreligiousOrders, whichincludeintheirsplendiddiversity,somuchwhichmakesforthe strength,andbeauty,andholinessof theChurch,andasweseethehealthy branchesofthemostancientOrders, aswellasthealmostinnumerablerecentOrdersspringingfromthesame root,wecanjudgeofthehealthand theholinessoftherootprinciplefrom whencetheyspring.
"Bytheirfruitsyeshallknowthem," isthegreattestsuggestedtousby DivineWisdom,andthefruitsofMonasticismtestifytothesalutarystate ofthetree,andofitsroots,which strikethroughallthecenturiesof Christianity.
Theexplanationoftheperennial vigouroftheMonasticsystem,is,of course,thatitspringsfromthecreatingandsustainingwordsofChrist, WhocounselleditInHisGospel.In theverydaysoftheApostlesthe wordsofOurSaviourbadinfluenced Hisfirstdisciplestosuchadegree, thatacommunityofgoodsismentionedasexisting,andwereadofvirgins livingintheirfathers'houses.Itis aremarkablefactintheworld'sexperience,thatnowhereelseexcept amongtheearlyChristians.andinthe monasteriesoftheCatholicChurch, hasiteverbeenpossibleforasystem of,communityofgoods,towork smoothly.
Duringthefirst'300yearsofthe Church,theperiodwhichcoversthe tengreatpersecutionsbythesuccessiveRomanEmperors,themostferventamongtheChristianswereaccustomedtowithdrawfromtheirbrethren asmuchascouldbe,andtoshunthe popularamusements.Suchasthese werecalledAscetics.
andbythefifthcentur2.,estr:.ihat oftheRomanEmpirewasfamiliar withthem.Fromthistime.too, datesthemorepermanentformgiven totherulesdrawnupbytheearlier Fathers,andregularMonasticismas weknowitcomestousfromthattime, intheformgivenitbytheRulesof St.AugustineandSt.Basil.Towards thecloseofthefifthcentury,St.Benedict,leadingahermit'slifeatSubiaco, inItaly,atractedbyhissanctity.a numerouscompany,forwhomheerectedtwelvemonasteries,eachwithtwelvemonks,ruledoverbyanAbbot.LaterhewenttoMonteCassino, andovertheruinsofatempleofApollohebuilttwochapels,dedicatedto St.JohntheBaptist,andSt.Martin ofTours.
St.JohntheBaptisthadhimself ledahermit'slife,inthedaysimmediatelyprecedingOurLord'spublic ministry,andSt.MartinofToursis eminentintheChurchasbeingthe founderofMonasticisminFrance.St. Martinisalsorenownedashaving trainedinmonasticdisciplinethe greatSt.Patrick,theApostleofIreland,whoestablishedMonasticismin thatcountrysosolidly,thatarmiesof monksgatheredtotheleadershipof suchsaintsasSt.Columba.St.Kevin, andSt.Calumbanus.
St.Benedict'sRulecalledintobe ingthemightycompaniesofthe MonksoftheWest,inhabitingduring thereignofCharlemagne,37,000monasteries.
Impartialhistorians,andtheirnumberincreaseyearbyyear,admitthat thesemonasteriesweretheprincipal factorsofEuropeancivilisationfor morethan1,000years.Eachmonasterywasacentreofenlightenment, andthelabourofthemonks,before theinventionofprinting,preserved bypatienttranslatingandtranscribing,thelanguagesinwhichignorant mentnowrevilethem.
ContemporiesoftheBenedictines werethemonksofSt.Gregory,of whomSt.Augustinewasone,andon hiscomingtoEnglandhebrought withhimalargecompanyofthese monks,whokeptarulefashionedon St.Benedict's.Atthesametime thatSt.Augustinewasevangelisingthesouth,St.Columbaandhismonks weredoingalikeworkinScotland.
Ionaisfamousashavingbeenthe chiefmonasteryofSt.Columba'sOr, nes,andwastheburialplaceofthe KingsofScotland,beinglookedupon asholyground.Afamousoff-shoot ofthismonasterywasLindisfarne, foundedbySt.Aidan.
thereligiousOrdersofthepresentday, andthecalumniesaboutthepastare easilyrefutedbymerelyquotingthe namesoftheeminentmembersofthe MonasticOrdersofallthecenturies. Thesenamesmakeanoblegalaxy, whichisoneoftheChurch'sbestgloriesInourownday,theancientOrdershaveallrenewedtheiryouth,and areinastateoffervourneversurpassedinearliercenturies,andin everycountrynewOrdersarefounded yearafteryear,toministertoevery wantofhumanity.Whathasbeen saidoftheMonasticOrdersofmen. mightbeWrittendownalmostword forwordofthereligiousOrdersof women,andineveryagetherehave beengreatabbessesandnuns,likeSt. Scholastics,St.Teresa,andSister CatherineMcAuley,whoselivesand workhaveleftapermanentmarkon theChurch,for,thoughdead,they "yetspeak,"inthepermanencegiven totheirwork,bythetensofthousands oftheirferventfollowers,whorenew fortheChurchofourowndaythe bestachievementsofearliertimes.

IntheninthcenturyMonasticism graduallylostmuchofitsfervourand usefulness,principallyowingtothe factthatunworthy-personswere easilyadmittedtothemonasteries, andgreatwealthaccruedtothem. Abusessuchasthetolerationoflay Abbots,andAbbotswhowerepracticallybaiOns,dimmedthelustrewhich forsolonghadWorthilyshonewith muchedificationtotheChurch.But thereformmovementswhichquickly followedperiodsof&cadence,havealwaysbeensuccessful,andSt.Ottoof Clunynoonlybroughtaboutareformatthistime,butbroughtabout agreatcentralisationmovement,exactlytheoppositeofSt.Benedict's idea.StBenedictwouldhivemonasteriesindependentofeachother:St. OttomadeClunytheheadmonastery withagreatnumberofdependent monasterieslinkedtoitfordirection. andintimetheAbbotofClunywas lookeduponassecondonlytothe Pope.MostmodernreligiousOrders aremanagedonSt.Otto'splan. AttheirChateadintheMorbihan, nottarfromAuray,theMarquisde Grandpreandhiswifewereconversing,afterbiddingfarewelltoaparty oftheirfriends.aristocratsleaving Francefortheshelteraffordedby Englandandthepossibilitiesitoffered.
ItwasrumouredthattheMarquis adoredhiswife,butpewlespokewith lesscertainlyofher:egadforhim. Thetrutnwasthattheirmarriage.as 44ifgenerallythecaseinFrance,had beenarrangedbytheirparants.These marriagesveryottenturncutqu'te satisfactorily.
