AcknowledgingaresolutionofCavan Farmers'Associationcongratulating himonhiselectionasseniormember furthecounty,Mr.PIF.Baxtersaid thatonthenationalquestionthe FarmersPartystoodforaunited,independentIreland,forlibertyforevery citizen,aswellasthemaintenanceof lawandorder.

TheFarmers'Partywerepreparedto putforwaraaconstructivenational policy,butowingtotherelative strengthofthepartiesintheDailthey wouldlikelybemoreconcernedfor sometimeintryingtoshapetheGovernmentpoky,soastomakeitmore favourabletoagriculturistsandthe taxpayersgenerally;tocutdownextravaganceandtopushforwarddevelopmentandreconstruction.

TheAssociationdecidedtoretainMr. Baxterascountyorganisingsecretary, anassistanttobeappointedbycom petitiveexamination.

ThatthemakingoftheTreatyan issuewasresponsibleforthepoor showmadebytheFarmers'candidates wastheviewexpressedbytheSecretary(Mr.McEvoy)toNorthTipperary Farmers'Union,who"hadplayedthe renegade"would,hesaid,learntheerroroitheirwayswhentheysampled thelegislationofthenextfewyears.

Mr.M.Meagher(adefeatedcandidate),complainedofthepoorshow theircandidateshadbeengiveninthe Press,andsaidplatform,Press,and evenpulpitwereagainstthem.

Itwasstatednearly£500wouldbe requiredtomeettheelectionexpenses intheNorthRiding,andsofaronly 1120hadbeensubscribed.Eachof the39brancheswasaskedtosubscribeaminimumof£10.

TOOMANYPUBLICHOUSES.

AtapublicmeetingintheMansion House.theCatholicTotalAbstinence Federation'sprogrammewasexplained.

Rev.Dr.Coffeysaidtheirprogramme oftemperancelegislationwhiththey askedtheGovernmenttoimmediately adoptwas:-(1)Reductionbyhalfof thenumberoflicensedhouses.(2) ClosingoflisencedhousesonSundays, electiondays,anddaysofpublicexcitementanddanger.(3)Curtailment ofthehoursofopeningonotherdays and'heabolitionofthebonafide farce. (41Amendmentofthelawsregulatingthesaleofdrinkinclubsto preventthegraveabusesprevalentin licensedclubs.(5)Separationatleast structurallyofplacesforsafeofgroceries,hardware,andothercommoditiesfromplaceswhereintoxicantsare sold.(6)Compulsoryendorsementof convictionsonlicenses.

Dr.Coffeysaid.that'theleadingfeatureofthatprogrammewasitsmoderation.

THECONDITIONOFAGRICULTURE.

TheintelligenceBranchoftheDepartmentofAgriculture,initsreview ofIrishagriculturalconditionsforthe monthofOctober,showsthatthepositionofthefarmerwasfarfromsatisfactory.Theweatheradverselyaffectedmostcrops.oatsbeingexpected tobeofonlyfairqualityandbelow theaverageyield.Barleyripened slowlyandsomewhatunevenly;potatoesdidnotpromisesoNellaswasexpected;whileflax,thoughgoodinbulk, seemedlikelytogiveadisappointing yieldinfibreowingtothelackof heatandsunshineintheclosingstages ofgrowth.Asaresultoftheshipping strikecattlepricesshowedadecline, littleornobusinessbeingdoneatfairs inanimalssuitableforexport.On somefarmsinthesoutherncounties fieldshavebeengrazedbarethrough theinabilityoffarmerstodisposeof theirsurplusstock.Thecontinued strikeinthebaconfactoriescausedad-

ditionaltroubletopig-keepersonsome WestCorkfarms,andmanyhadtobe heldover,asitwasimpossibletosecure asatisfactorysale.Thepriceofbutterfell,andwithitthepricespaidfor milkbycreameries.

ForgottenCommandments.

WhycouldtheirChurchnotdotodaywhatithaddoneinthepast?

LudendorffandHitler,themilitarybrigands,whoinvadedBavaria andendeavouredtoupsetitsGovernment,havesufferedahumiliatingdefeat.Ludendorffisabusybodywhoimagineshim.lfasuperman.Heis obsessedbyanoverwhelminglystrongbeliefinthesupremacyofLudendorff. andimaginesheisthehopeofGermanLutheranism,whichisallegedtohe disintegrating.Notlongagothismodernfire-eaterdeclaredthat"theBlack DangerinGermanyhasbecomegreaterthantheRedDanger."Bythe formerhe'meanttheSocietyofJesus,andbythelatterBolshevism.If GermanLutheranismisdisintegrating,itisbecausetheBlackRobedSoldiers ofChristarealivingwallagainsttheRedDangerinGermany.TheCatholic Churchhasalwaysbeenthestrongestbulwarkagainsttheenemiesofnationalpeaceandsecurity..Germany'shopeis:heCatholicChurch.

RudyardKipling'smusehasgrownoldandpeeved,judgingbyhis"LondonStone,"publishedrecentlyinthe"West."Itmayhaverhymeofa sort,butitislackinginreason,anditispagan.ItcertainlyisnotChristian,forthehopeofeveryChristian,towhomtheSacrificeofCalvaryis morethanamerehistoricfact,iscentredintheResurrection-whichtakes thestingfromDeath."IamtheResurrectionandtheLife"wouldbe emptywordsinthelastsolemnceremonywhichcommittedtheUnknown SoldiertothedintinLondonTown,ifthepawkishsentimentexpressedby Kipling'slinesweretobetakenseriously.Rudyard,thepettedandpatronised,hasgrownold,that'ssure,andhismuse,ifnotabsolutelysenile,iscertainlyshowingsignsofamentalchangethatisregrettableinonewhowrites asaBritishIntellectual,andanexponentoftheprevailingsentimentofe;ng. lishmenand,incidentally,asupposedlyChristiannation.Wewonderhad heanythoughtoftheeverlastingyearsafterdeathintheBetterLandwhen hewascomposinghisoccasionalpoemforArmisticeDay?Hiscontribution totheNationalTributetotheMightyDead,whosememorieshavebeensalragedfromtheaftermathoftheGreatWarbytheLondonCenotaph,only speaksofgrieving,asifgriefandtearsareallthatis'lefttoperpetuateand repaytheirsacrifice.Kipling's"LondonStone"isascoldasdeathandthe thestonesoftheCenotaph:itisasmelancholya'thecypressandtheyew intheshadowsofthenight.TheideaofGodisnotinit;itleavesnoconsolingthoughtoftheblessed,everlastingyearsintheBetterLandpromised tothosewhohavediedwell--therebreathesinitnothoughtoftheblissand gloryoftheeternallifebeyondthegrave.Itisnotapoem-itisamistake.

AdefiisthrowndowntotheAllies,andthislatesttwistintheaffairs ofthetwoprincipalwarcriminalsinEuropehasunsettledinternationalcalculations.OntheeveofageneralelectionsinEngland,theex-Kaiser's passports,andtheex-CrownPrince'sreturntoGermanyaremattersofvery solemninterest,notonlytoBelgium,France,andItaly,but.perhaps,tothe world.Itisnotextraordinary,underthecircumstances,thattheFrench. Pressaredemandingfresh"sanctions"onGermany.Butwhilsttheyaredemandingthesethings,Germany'snewPrimeMinistersitsbackandplacidly smiles.Quietly,butwithdeliberateequivocationandresolution.Germans.is reconstructing,andifFrancefailsinherRhurenterprise.anythingmight happeninthenearfuture.Germany.uptodate,hasbeenbattingona goodwicket.

a'hefirstyear'scollectingcampaignenbehalfofourproposedNewCathedralinPerthisdrawingtoaclose.TheDiocesehaspracticallybeentraversedbytheArchbishopinthequestoffundsforthegreatwork.Promise::havebeenmadeinallquartersoftheDiocesetosupporttheproject, anditistheArchbishop'ssincerestwishthatthesepromisesshouldberedeemedbeforethecloseoftheyear.Itistobehopedthatpeoplewillbe aspromptandgenerousintheirpaymentsastheyhavebeenintheirpromises.ThefirstandsecondSundayofDecemberhavebeenappointedby HisGraceasthedaysonwhichageneraleffortthroughouttheDiocesewill bemadetocollectthesubscriptionsthathavebeenpromisedforthefirst year.ThepaymentscanbemadetothelocalCathedralFundSecretary,the localpriest,ortheArchbishophimself.

ADayandaMemory

OnSundaylastwasmadeforawhileakinshipbetweenthepeoplesof theFreeStatesoftheEmpireandthosewhojoinedinthecelebrationofArmisticeDayinEngland.TheCenotaphinWhitehallhadcalledforththe homageofallsectionsofLondon'scitizenryforthegreatUnknownWarrior ahoseremainslaybeneathit.Sovereignandsubject,fromthehighestto thehumblestcitizen,paidtheirmeedofhonourtotheunnamedsleeperwho representedthegreatarmyofheroeswhosleepinFlandersandbytheMarne andtheSomme,theirdutywelldoneindefenceofwhattheybelievedtobe theright.

Itwasappropriatethatforthefirsttimethecelebrationhadfall:alor aSunday-adaythatineveryChristianlandislinkedwithsacrifice,prayer andhope.To-day,itwouldseemthenationshaveforgottenthelessonsof thewar,andareforgetfulofthesacrificeoflivesandtreasureitentailed,and aredriftingintoamaterialismthatisheadingforadangerousupsetof worldpeace.Byahappycoincidence,foronedayatleast,whathadgrown tobeasemi-secularcelebrationhadbecome.associatedwiththatonedaywhichinspirestheChristianwithhigherthoughtsofdutytohisCreatorand hisfellowman,andofhislastend.OnSundaylasttherewas,perhaps.a clearernoterunningthroughoutmostofthespeecheswhichweremadein connectionwiththecommemorationoftheArmistice,thoughintheconsiderationofthegreatproblemsofthepresenttheimportanceoftheguidanceandarbitramentofreligionwasscarcelynoticed.Indeed,though muchthatwaexcellentsentimentwastalked,littlementionwasmadeof GodasthegreatArbiterandJudge.Referencesweremadetopersonal feelingsandwisdomgainedfromthelessonsofthewar;theidealsthatpatriotisminspired;thesacrificesthatdutyimplied,andthedisappointments thathavefollowedourgreatexpectations.andappealsweremadefora greaterrecognitionofthedutiesofcitizenship,buttherewerefewinstances ofanappealforagreaterrecognitionofGod.Theshadowofthepolitician walkedsidebysidewithmostofthespeakers,andtheLeagueofNationsis lookedtoasacorrectorforalltheworld'sworriesandasolventforallInternationalproblems.ButitisnotseenthatevenaLeagueofNationsisa humanaffair,andunlessgovernedbytheethicsandconceptsofChristianity itisnotlikelytoachievemuchinthecorrectionofthatselfishnessandgreed whichpermeatesthedesignsofGovernmentsto-dayequallyasmuchasthey doCivicandsociallife.

DuringtheprogressofthewarwhentheshadowofCentralEurope threatenedtoblotoutthelibertiesoftheEntenteNations,therewasthought ofGodasJudgeandCreator,andeveninpubliclifementalkedofaimingat higherpurposesforthebettermentofsociety.Alas!Ourpromisesofbettermentweremadeundertheduressoffearoftheshadowofwar.Death cameveryneartous;teefelthisnearnessandwerememberedGod.Now theworldrollsonits.untranquilway,carelessofitsCreatorandevendefiantofdeath.IfonSundaylasttheCenotaphatWhitehallhadalesson toteachthenations,itwasthat"WarisHell,"andthatfromtheHellofWar thereisnoredemption,butthroughtheloveandmercyandknowledgeand friendshipofGod,theLordofLieandDeath.Ourstatesmentalkofpracticalobjectives.Mr.Bruce,inhismessageonArmisticeDay,exhortedall Britishpeopletorememberthattheruleofpeaceonearthandouropportunitytoliveourchosenlivesinsecurityarestillasmuchobjectivestobework. edforearnestly,unremittingly,andunselfishlyasinthedaysoftheGreat War.Somepeopleconsiderthesetobeidealsratherthanpracticalobjectives.Thisis,arhaps,oneofthereasonswhypeaceandprosperityseem toeludeus."Everypoliticianhashisownsolventforthepresentworld unrest."Theresettlementoftheworld,"saysMr.Bruce,"dependsto-day greatlyontheCommonwealthofBritishnations.Itisforustoensurea syiseanddetermineddirectionoftheEmpire'spolicytothatend.Theworld hashadenoughofstrife."Good!Mr.Brucehasthefineoccasionalwayof sayingagrandgenerality.ButuntiltheCommonwealthofBritishnations,andeverynationworthyofassociationwiththeLeagueofNations, realisetheimportanceofthemoralla,inthewholestructureoftheir foreignpolicies,andintheadministrationofgovernment.wefeartheirpart inthepromotionoftilatInternationalfiendshipandpeacewesomuchdesireandwouldmakemuchsacrificetoattain,isdestinedtobewaylaidwith manydisappointments.vexations,andfailures.

Thebeautifulandlyricallovestory. thesheerpotencyofitsdrama,theexquisitetendernessofitspathos,and theaboundingthrillsthatpermeatethe productionfrombeginningtoend, make"WestboundLimited,"commencingonSaturdayatthePrince,of WalesTheatre,oneofthereallygreat filmsoftheyear."WestboundLimited"seizesuponarailroadman,anengineer,oftentimidaboutadvertising himselfalwaysloyaltohissuperiors, andglorifieshiminpicturesinthe somemannerthattheimmortalLincolnglorifiedthegreatdominantplain peopleinbeautifulwordsandphrases. 4nentertainment,theprogrammeof whichwasentirelygivenbythepupils ofSt.Joseph'sSchool,SouthernCross, tookplacerecentlyintheschoolroom. Everyseatwasoccupied,andthere wasstandingroomonlyformany,the parentsandfriendsoftheyoungfolk beinginstrongforce.Adelightful programmewasgonethrough,inwhich vocalandinstrumentalitemswere muchappreciated,butitwasthe groupingforconcerteditemsandthe danceswhichattractedthemostattentionandearnedapplauseforthe realisticmannerinwhichthechildren renderedtheirparts.Theconcerted veryprettilystaged,the colourofthepupils'costumesgiving goodeffect,andthedancingshowed thatthechildrenhadbeencarefully trainedbytheirteachers.Anoverture,"Balanceke,"wasplayedonthe pianobyMissE.Puddy,anditwas followedbyaniteminwhichallthe pupilsweregroupedonthestageand sang"Welcome."AHighlandFling wasdancedspiritedlybytheMisses O'Neill,DonnellyandMadigan.The pupilswerethendrilledtomusic,each displayingascarfandsomeeffective evolutionswereperformed.MissM. O'Neillrecitedthe"SpanishChampion,"andtheMissesE.WestandN. Orfania.thebiggest,brightest,and .et-organisedaffairofthekindyet knowninWesternAustralia,wasofficiallyopenedbyhisExcellencythe Governor.SirFrancisNewdegate,at CarnivalSquare,Perth,lastFridaynight,toaidtheefforttoraise£10,000 forthosesplendidinstitutions,the FoundlingHomeandtheGirls'Orphanage.Subiaco.Itwillremain openoneachweeknightforthenext threeweeks.

Thegroundwasincapitalorderfor theoccasion,andthethousandsofvisitorsehogreetedhisExcellency,when hecameforwardunthespaciousdancingfloortoaddressthem,musthave appreciatedthehardworkdonebya bigarmyofvolunteerstomakethe placelooksowell.Everybuildingon thegroundhadbeenrepainted,the dancingfloorhadbeenrelaid,anex cellentrunningtrackhadbeenconstructed,theelectriclightingsystem hadbeencompletelyre-arrangedunder theskilfuldirectionofMr.Mackie,the stallshadbeenfurnished,decorated andstockedastheyhodneverbeenbefore,flagshadbeensetflyingfrom everyavailablepole,andahostof novelties'hadbeenprovidedintheway ofsideshows.Therewaseveryaidto enjoyment,andthevisitors,underits influenceyieldedgenerouslytothe variousappealsforfunds,particularly astheappellantshadsomethinggood tooffereachtime'moneywasasked for. HisExcellency,uponbeinginvited byMr.M.O'Dea,oneofthevice-chairmenoftheAppealCommittee,todeclarethefeteopen,waswarmlycheeredbythelargecrowd.Hesaidit wasoftheverygreatestimportancein anycountrythatyoungpeopleshould begiventhebestpossiblestartinlife, anditwasespeciallyimportantina youngcountrylikeWesternAustralia. Theyshouldbegiventheopportunity tocommencetheirlivessothatthey couldlookeverybodyinthefaceand growuptobegoodandusefulcitizens. Hehadjustreturnedfromatrip throughtheWheatBelt,andhecould assurehishearersthatthemorehe sawofthisStatethemorehewasimpressedwithwhatitwasto-dayand whatitwasgoingtobeinthefuture. IntheBruceRockdistricthehadseen wheatandstockthatweresecondto noneintheworld.Inafreecountry likethis,ifthepeopledidthebest theycouldfortheyoungfolk,thelattercoulddoanythingtheyliked.He knewwhattheFoundlingHomeand theGirls'Orphanageweredoingfor thecommunity.andwhen,astherepresentativeofhisMajestytheKing, heacceptedtheinvitationtoopenthe fairthatevening,hefeltthathewas supportingacausethatwasagood one.Hecongratulatedtheorganisers ofthefairontheworktheyhaddone sofar,andhehopedtheywould achievetheresulttheydesired-the raisingof£10.000.Hehadmuchplea. sureindeclaringOrfaniaopen,andhe wishediteverysuccess.

TheMayor(Mr.J.T.Franklin),in proposingavoteofthankstohisExcellencyforhisattendance,paida hightributetotheworkdonebythe SistersofMercy"httheFoundling HomeandtheGirls'Orphanage.AccompaniedbythemembersoftheCity Councilherecently,besaid,visited thoseinstitutions,andwhathesaw therewasanagreeableeye-openerto himaswellastohismunicipalcolleagues.Hehadhadnoideathat suchwonderfulworkwasbeingdone bytheSisters.

Mr.HarryMann,M.L.A.,seconued themotion.Inhisformercapacity asaGovernmentofficialformany ,years,hedeclared,hehadcomeinto closetouchwiththeconductofthe HomeandtheOrphanage,andsoimpressedwashewithwhathehadseen thatwhenthepresentappealwas launchedhehadnohesitationingivingithisheartiestsupportandrecommendingbisfriendstofollowhis example.Because,mainly,ofthe nobleobjectforwhichithadbeenes. tablished.Orfaniarichlydeservedthe mostpronouncedsuccess.
