Themotherandthedoctorhavingleft thechildaloneforafewminutes, foundoncomingbacktotheroom wheretheyhadlefther,thatshewas lookingathorriblepicturesinamedicalbook,andthatshelaugheddelightedlyattheshockedexpressionsofher mother,quiteinthestyleofJames WhitcombeRiley's"LittleOrphant Annie,"whowhenvisitorscameto tea:

Notbeingpostedinallthefindings oftheconference,Idonotproposeto discussthem,butIaminsmypthy withtheearnestpeoplewhoconferred, asIamwithallpeoplewhogropein thedarknesstowardsthelight.
Thatthemembersoftheconference gropedtowardsthelightIamquite sure,fortheybeganbyadmittingthat acertainevilexists.Thesecondimportantthingtodoistolookforthe remedy.Theconferencelookedfor it.Themostimportantthingisto Endtheremedy,anditisjustthat remedythatIoffertothemembers dconference,andtoallotherswise enoughtoacceptit.Theoldrhyme says:
"Foreveryevilunderthesun, Thereisaremedy,orthereisnone. Ifthereisone,tryandfindit.

Now,alltherhymeisnottrue,but onlythismuchofit,"Foreveryevil underthesun,thereisaremedy."In thiscasetheremedyisnotfarto seek,foritiscontainedintheFourth Commandment.Thoughthedoctor andthemotherwereshockedatthe littlegirl,Iammoreshockedatthe mother.Thelittlegirlkeptno FourthCommandment,becauseshe hadnotbeingtrainedtokeepthe FourthCommandment.Aslikelyas not,shehadnotbeentaughttokeep anyCommandments,andwasmorein needofthedivinethanofthephysician.
AconferenceinEnglandisaboutas usefulasameetinginthemoon,ifits landingsproposeanyotherremedy thanGod'sremedy,whichistheobediencecommandedbytheFourthCommandment.Awillingobediencemust beexactedrightfrombabyhood,andif suchobediencebenotexacted,anunwillingobedienceisthenextbest thing,foritwillkeepapatchedpeace inthefamilyforawhile,butonlyfor awhile.
Therearemanydutiescomprised undertheFourthCommandment,bu* obedienceisthechiefone,anditis onewhichcanbetaughtforalifetime,beforethechildcomestotheage ofreason.
Theparentineverywell-ordered homeknowsthatthisisso,andthe parentsofthedisorderedhomes,per haps,willnotbelieveit,fortheytied muchdifficultyinendeavouringtoenforceobediencefromtheiryounger children,becausethewronglytrained olderonesgiveabadexample-1ser-

Thewiseparentfindsiteasytoinculcateobedience,notbydiscourses onittochildrengrownbeyondit,but bymakingitsecondnature,tleough constantexerciseofthe'childinits savingpractice,fromthedaysof babyhood.Manyfailinthisparticularineitheroftwoways:bytouchordering,andbynotbeing,inearn.-tit aboutcommands.
Amechanicalhabitdevelopswith manytiredmothersofsaying,"Stop thatnoise."or"Leavethatalone." andthenoiseisnotstopped.andthe thingisnotleftalone,and-nobody cares.
Thechildthusaccustomedtoslight whatissaidtoiteasilyandnaturally growsintooneofthedisobedientchildrenwhichhelptomakethegreat childproblemofthe"statelyhomesof England,"andthemoretalked-ofpro. blemofthehomesoftheEastEndof London.
Themotherwhoistootiredto botheraboutinsistingonconstant obedienceinbabydays,willhavelittlerestlateron,whenshesitsuplate peeringintothedarknessbeyondthe streetlightsfor"anysignofJulia,"or whenheranxiousthoughtscouldbe expressedinthewordsofthesong: "Whereismywanderingboytonight?"
BothJulia,andthewanderingboy, arefaroutofreachofanyremedy fromaconferencethatseekstoright things,withoutrecognisingtherights ofGod."UnlesstheLordbuildthe house,theylabourinvainwhobuild it,"andthehomenotestablishedon God'sLaw,andwhichhasnotbeen builtuponobedience,isonasandy foundationindeed.
AlltheotherdutiesthatarecomprisedintheFourthCommandment springnaturallyfromtherootofobedience.Theproperrespect,andhonour,andreverencewhichmanyEast Endparentsfailtosecure,wouldall havecometogetherasnaturalgo..ylv things,iftheyhadbutseentoitthat obediencewaswellestablished.
Thereisnootherwayofrighting thewrongsoftheEastEndthanthat oftakingGod'sremedy,andthe ChurchwhichbelongstoNorth.South andWest,aswellastotheEastEnd, canpointtheremedyfordomesticrevolution,andmutiny,andfor"every evilunderthesun."andforthisspecialevilwhichheldtheattentionof theLondonConference,theChurch offerstheremedyoftherestitutionof theFourthCommandmenttoitsproperplaceinthehome,andfromthe beginningofitsrighttime,whichis beforethechildknowsitsrighthand fromitslefthand.
ThedelegatesoftheConferenceon NaughtyChildrenarepresentedwith thesefewwords,betterthanalltheir conclusions,becausetheypresentwhat isGod'sremedy,theChurch'sremedy,andtheonlyremedyforthethings whichtheydeplore.

WithregardtotheOrthodoxChurch, rememberingPisaandFlorence,and stillmorethefactthatalltheareal GreekfatherswereabsolutelyPapal intheirteaching,webelievethatsome day(faroffperhaps)thereunionwill come.ThereareFignsofitalready.
ButLordHalifaxplaces"theOrthodoxChurchesandourselves"together. Whoare"ourselves?"Presumably, thereveredViscounthimselfandthe sectionofAnglo-Catholicswhothoroughlysymbolisewithhim.Thewhole ofthepartydoesnot,anditisimportanttorememberthis.
ButevensupposingtheentireAngloCatholicsectionofAnglicanismwere toaccepttheinfallibleteachingofthe VicarofChrist,therecouldbeaslittle possibilityofreunionwiththeChurch ofEnglandasthereisto-day.Rome mightenterintopourparlerswithone oftheschismaticEasternChurches,or evenwithaProtestantdenomination, supposingthatthewholebodyofCatholicdoctrinewasaccepted,andthe reconciliationoftheseparatedbodymerelyinvolveddetailsofdiscipline andliturgicalexpression.
NodoubthisEminenceofMechlin hasmadeallthisluminouslycleartoLordHalifax.Buttoenterinto(so tospeak)diplomaticrelationswitha ragmentoftheChurchofEngland,or anyotherecclesiasticalbody,wouldbeanobviousimpossibility. APointGained. personalThelongcorrespondence(besides contact)betweenCardinal MercierandthemosteminentofAnglo-Catholicsmust,however,issuein somegood,perhapsinawaywecannotyetsee.Closecontactwiththe Church,andasteadfastgood-willare marvelloussolventsofthemostbafflingproblems.Itisagreatpoint gained,eventograsppreciselywhere eachsidestands.
Thereis.omethingbothpathetic andheroicinLordHalifax'sanxious outlooktowardstheprobableresumptionoftheNineteenthOecumenical Councilin1925.Weareremindedof DavidUrquhart'shighhopesofthe Councilin1869-70.Inreadingthe aimsofbothmesswefeelthatweare facetofacewithagreatsoulineach. Ofcourse,thementalandspiritual ethicsofthetwodifferswidely. EverythingLordHalifaxsaysor writescommandstherespectofall Christianpeople,whoevertheymaybe. Forourselves,thoughwecannotbut heconsciousthathecherisheswhatis, inonesense,animpossibleideal,becausehetakeshisownattitudetobe atleastinpossethatofthewholeAnglicanChurch,wefeelthatinspirithe belongsfarmoretousthantohisown ce-religionists.
Whatawelcomesuchasoulwould receiveatthestepsofPeter'sChair, andfromthemanythousandswho haveforwellnighhalfacenturyfol. lowedhiscareerwithintensestsym. pathyandsincerestadmiration.May wenotsayofhis,"EccevereIsraelite,inquodolesnonest."

"Thefundamentalquestionthathas tobeconsidered,ifanyhopeofreunionwiththeRomanChurchistobe entertained,isthenatureofthePrimacyconferredbyOurLordonSt. Peter.IsthePrimacyofSt.Peter andhissuccessorsaprimacydejure divino,andifso,whatdoesitinvolve, whatisitsextent,andwhatareits limitations?Unlesssomesolutionto thatquestioncanbefoundwhichis acceptabletoRomeontheoneside, andtotheOrthodoxChurchandcurselvesontheother,theideaofreunionishopeless."

OnAllSaints'Day,atthe7o'clock Mass,33boysfromtheChristianBrothers'College,madetheirfirstCommunion,andtomarktheoccasionthe Brothersentertainedtheboysata Communionbreakfast.Thethanksof allareduetoMesdamesCasson,Halton,andDonovanforarrangingthe breakfast.Onthesameoccasiona numberoflittlegirlsattendingthe ConventschoolsmadetheirfirszCommunion,andwereafterwardsentertainedbythegoodSisters.

Sir,-MayIappealthroughyourcolumnsonbehalfofthelittlebushchildren,whothroughnofaultoftheir own,aredeprivedoftheadvantagesof aCatholicschool.Iappealnotto citypeople,buttotheparentsofthe littlebusbiesthemselves.Isitpossiblethatcountrypeoplearenot awarethatthreedevotedNunsin PerthareconductingCorrespondence Classeswiththeobjectofbringinginto thelivesof tc-cleonestheblessingsofareligiouseducation?When inPerthrecentlyIascertainedthat onlysixtyfamilieswereusingthese classes.Ifcountrypeopleknewandrealisedthebenefitsfromtheclasses, therewouldbenearersixhundred familiesparticipating.I'canspeak frompersonalexperience,becausemy ownchildrenareenrolled,andevery otherparentwhosechildrenarefortunateenoughtobecorrespondingwith oneofthesegoodSisters,willagree withmethatthehandofGodisbehindthework.Readersof"John O'Brien's"poems(acopyofwhich shouldbeineveryCatholichomein thebushwillremembertheladfrom Tangmalangaloo,who,whenaskedby theBishopatConfirmationtime. "WhatwasChristmasDay?"replied:
cometowitnessthemostedifying sceneinordertoremindthemofthe happiestdayoftheirlives.Itisno wonder,therefore,'thatatthe8 o'clockMasslastSundaythe'seating capacityofthespaciouschurchwastaxedtoitsutmost,andwhatagrand sighteachandeveryoneofthosepresenthadtheprivilegeofwitnessing, asthelittlefriendsofGodapproached the'rails,receivedtheirGodforthe first-time,andreturnedtotheirplaces, theirangel-likefacesradiantwithjoy andthankfulness.Formonthspast thegoodSistershadbeenpreptiring themforthisgreatoccasion,andon thismorninghadbeenrealisedfor these80littleonesthefondesthope andwishofeveryCatholicchild,name; lyhisorherfirstCommunion. Thehymnssungbythechildren wereindeedbeautifultolistento,beingrenderedwiththatinimitablechildlikedevotionandinperfectunison; buttheprayersrecitedaloudrivalled the'singingtosuchanextentthatone couldnothelpbutlongtobeoneof thosechildrenagain,andto_havereceivedfromthehandsofthegoodparishpriestforthefirsttime,theBody andBlood,SoulandDivinityofJesus Christ,undertheappearanceofa pieceofBread. AfterMasstheparentsandfriendsof thechildrencrowdedthedoorwayof thechurchwaitingtoreceivethefirst kissfromthelipsoftheirlittleones whowerelikesomanyangelsofGod. Abreakfastthathasneverbeensurpassedinallthe'yearsthatthenuns ofHighgateHillhavebeenpreparing FirstHolyCommunicantswaswaiting forthechildrenwhentheycamefrom thechurch.Thetableswerebeautifullysetoutinoneoftheschool rooms,andlookedmosttemptingas thechildrenentered.Prideofplace attheheadofthetableswasgivento astatueofOurLady,standingona pedestal,surroundedwithflowers.

Thepriii,ipalannualfunctionofthe HibernianAustralasianCatholicBenefitSocietyinthisStatetookplaceon lastSunday,whenthemembersinthe Metropolitan-Suburbanareareceived HolyCommunioninabodyattheCathedralatthe8o'clockMass,andafterwardspartookofbreakfasttogetherat theHibernianHall.Upwardsof130 membersparticipatedinthissplendid manifestationofFaith,andconsideringthefactthatthemembersofthe societyarescatteredthroughoutallthe suburbs,thisattendancemustberegardedasverysatisfactoryindeed.
Motorcarsandcharabancsconveyed membersfromFremantle,Cottesloe, Subiaco,Leederville,VictoriaPark, HighgateHill,andMaylands,andit wassplendidtoseetheseconveyances arrivingattheHibernianHallladen withHiberniansbentonfulfillingthe mustessentialobligationcastupon themembersoftheirgrandsociety.
HolyMasswascelebratedbythe Rev.FatherO'Callaghan,whocongratulatedthesocietyonthesplendid attendanceofmembers,andexpressed thehopethattheywouldalwaysbe faithfulincarryingoutalltheirreligiousobligations.AfterMassallthe membersadjournedtotheHibernian Hall,whereasplendidrepastprovided byMrs.Goodmanwaspartakenof. TheSocietywashonouredbythe presenceoftheRightRev.Monsignor Verling,V.G.,andRev.FathersLynch, ofMaylands),andJ.Lynch,ofLeedervine.TheDistrictPresident(Bro.J. Cawley)presided,andafterthemembers'appetiteshadbeensatiated,he extendedaverycordialwelcometo Monsignor.VerlingandFathersLynch, andthemembers.Itwasagreat pleasuretohim,onbehalfoftheDistrictBoard,togivethemallahearty welcometothatmostimportantHibernianfunctionoftheyear.Itwasa credittothesocietytoseesomany menandwomen,someofthemcoming fromaconsiderabledistance,atgreat inconvenience,totestifytotheFaith thatwasinthem.ItwasverypleasingandencouragingtotheDistrict Board.Theyanticipatedhavinga goodnumberpresent,buttheiranticipationshadbeenexceeded.He thankedthemfortheexcellentmanner inwhichtheyfulfilledtheirfirstduty asmembersofthesociety.MonsignorVerling,whomhecordiallyandsincerelywelcomed,had,atconsiderable inconvenience,,cometojoinwiththem intheirAnnualCommunionBreakfast.
Forthekindlyinteresthehadalways takenintheaffairsofthesocietythey owedhimadebtofgratitude,and theyweremuchhonouredbyhispresence.Healsowelcomedtherepresentativesdfkindredsocietiespresent. Thoughthegatheringthatmorning wasmostsatisfactory,still,hethought, theyshouldnotbereallysatisfied.He regrettedthatsomememberswho couldbewith,andshouldhavebeen, wereabsent.Theyshouldallobserve theobligationsoftheirmembership. Iftheydid,nektyeartheyshould havethehallwellfilled.
Thetoastof"ThePope"wasthen honouredattheinstanceoftheChairman. Bro.J.P.Dohenysubmittedthe toastof"TheArchbishopandClergy." Asoneoftheofficersofthesocietyhe hadmuchpleasureintestifyingtothe splendidrelationshipwhichexistsbetweentheclergyandthemembers.He recognisedtheassistancegivenbythe clergyineveryparish-thesplendid linkwhichtheclergythroughoutAustraliaareandhavebeenbetweenus andIreland.Wecannotforgetthe country-towhichwebelongwhenwe realisethatsomanyofourclergyhave comefromthatgloriouscountryto plantinAustraliatheseedofFaith. Whilethey'hadintheirmidstpriests withthezealanddevotionofth,pie. neerpriestsmentionedby"John O'Brien,"theAustralianpoet-priest. theyneednotfearforthefutureof theCatholicFaithinAustralia. Thetoastwasenthusiasticallyreceivedwithmusicalhonours.
ASPLENDIDDEMONSTRATION.
Sacraments.llewasalwaysready andanxioustoassistthesocietyinany waywithinhispower,anddeeecridit anhonourandadutytobeassociated withthemembersineverythingthat theydidforthebenefitoftheChurch.
TheRev.FathersP.LynchandJ. Lynchalsoresponded,andcongratulatedthesocietyonthegoodattendanceofmembersatthefunction.
Thetoastof"TheH.A.C.B.Society" wasproposedbyMonsignorVerling, whoreferredtothegreatassistan.:e thatthesocietywastotheChurchin Australiaandthedifferentparishesin connectionwithparochialworks,and theassistancegivenwasalwaysappreciatedbytheclergy,who,whenever andwherevertheyfoundthebranches oftheH.A.C.B.Societyreadyandwillingtodotheirpartinparochialaffairs,they(theclergy)wouldinturn doallthatwaspossiblefortheadvancementofthebranch.Itwasdueto theparishesthatthepreachesofthe HibernianSocietyshouldsofatasit waspossibleforthemtodoso,assist ineverywayinconnectionwiththe improvementofparochialchurchesand schools,andhehopedtnatinthefuturethesocietywouldnrogresstothe extentthatitshouldio,andassured themembersthattheywouldhavethe heartyco-operationandassistanceof thepriestsinfurtheringtheinterests ofthesociety.Heagainurgedthe memberstobesteadfastin'theiradhesiontotheprinciplesoftheFaithand constantintheirreceptionofthoSacraments,andassuredthemthatifthey were,nothingcouldimpedetheprogressineverywayofthesocietyin thisState.MonsignorVerlingsubmittedthetoastoftheSociety,andit washonouredwithenthusiasmbythe representativesofkindredsocietiesand visitors.

ThesoftSummerbreezeonthis Sundayafternoonwasfragrantwith theodourofpineandfirasAnna O'Kellywalkedclowninthepath thicklycarpetedwithneedles,across whichthesunlightflickeredanddanced,tothesmallwoodenchapelinthe clearing.HernieceEileen,arestless littlesprite,accompaniedher.Reachingthedoor,Annagaveagentlepush andtoherdelightitopened.
ThechapelwasbutatemporaryaffairfortheconvenienceoftheCatholicvisitorsattheSummerresortsnear by.ManyvisitedthistownofGranby,ontheMainecoast,andhereAnna ellyhadcometospendtheSumrwithherbrotherandhisfamilyat teirSummercottage.
Shewaspleasedtofindshecould enterandsayafewprayers,asitwas closedduringtheweek,andsometimes immediatelyafterMassonSunday.TodayFatherBurnshadnotreturnedat oncetohisowntown,tenmilesdistant,andthechapelwouldbeopen untilhewasreadytoreturn.The placewascoolandquiet,andsosoothingafteraseekoffunandexcitementthatshefeltinclinedtospend theafternoonthereinprayer.
ShefinishedherRosaryandbegan onsomespecialprayersforfavours received,whenEileenbegantoget restless.ShegavethechildherRosarybeadstokeepherquiet;butafter awhilethechildtiredoftheseand beganwalkingupanddown,goinginto thedifferentpewsandpickingupthe prayer-bookswhichhadbeenleftin thebenches.
Afewmomentslatershewandered outsideandspenttheremainderof thetimerunninginandoutuntilher youngauntwasreadytoreturnhome.
Annawasjustclosingthedoorwhen shemissedher rememberedRosarybeadsandthen thatshehadgiventhem tothechild.
"Eileen,darling,whereareauntie's beads?"shesaid.
Eileenranbackintothechapeland returnedwiththebeads,butasAnna tooktheminherhandsshefelta thrillofalarm,forthesmallsilver crosswasgone.
"Eileen,"shecried,"whatdidyou dowithauntie'scross?"
Eileenwasfrightenedandbeganto cry.
"Didn'tdonuffin'withit."
Annasawthatifshewastogetany informationshemustkeepcalm;so takinghersmallniecebythehandshe ledherintothechurch.
"Now,dear,showAuntAnnawhere youputthecross,"shesaidgently.
Eileenwentstraighttooneofthe pews.
"ItcommedoffandIputitinthis book."
Therewereseveralprayer-books about,andAnnexaminedthemall, butnocrossappeared.Shesearched upanddown,insideandoutsideofthe chapel,butherlabourwasfruitless. Thenshekneltinoneofthepewsand prayed,withasobinherthroat,that shewouldfindthecross.
Itwasnearsupper-timewhensheat lastgaveupthesearchandstarted wearilyforhome.Thescentofthe pines,theflickeringshadowsacrossher pathandtheroaroftheseainthedistancewerelostuponher,forherheart washeavywiththeshadowofher loss.
GrannyO'Kellyhadgivenherthe cr"rt'sanIrishcross,givenmebythe O'Kellyhimself,"thewhite-hairedold ladyhadsaidproudlyassheplacedit inhergranddaughter'shandsafew hoursbeforetheAngelofDeathhad summonedher,"andwhenI'mgone, child,it'stobeyours.It'sblessed forahappydeath,andithasbrought memanyablessing.Igiveittoyou withmyblessingandtheblessingof thosebeforeme."
Thefamilyatthecottagewere muchconcernedovertheloss,especi- allywhentheysawhowbadlyshefelt aboutit.Continuedquestioningof Eileenelicitedtheinformationthat shehadputit"inthebirdies'nest."
"Tryandnotthinkaboutitto- night.Anna,"herbrothercomforted her,"andto-morrowwewillmakea systematicsearch."
Butthesystematicsearchfailedto bringthe"Thecrosstolight. littleroguehiditcarefully," wasthecommentofthefather,but onebyonetheycametotheconclusionthatshehaddroppeditsomewhere;perhapsamongthepineneedles andreallydidnotknowwhereshehad lostit.
"Keepupyourcourage,Anna;we'll hearofitbeforetheSummerisover," JohnO'Kellycheerfullyassuredher.
Atthepostoffice,ontreesbythe pathleadingtothechapel,inthe hoteloffice,attheboatlanding-anywherethattherewasagoodchanceof beingseen-hepostednoticesoffering arewardtothefinderforitsreturn. ButtheSummerpassedanditwas notfound.
DayafterdayAnnakneltandofferedaprayertoSt.Anthony,begging hisintercessionforthefindingofher belovedcross.Sometimesthetears cameunbiddenasshethoughtofthe littleoldladywhohadgivenittoher. "PoorGranny,tothinkIhaditso shortatime.andshebroughtitover theseaandhaditforyears."
"TheblessingoftheO'Kellysisoh Grannyhadoftensaid,andshe hadlostit,hutallherprayersand allhersorrowfullongingsbroughtno results.
"St.Anthonywillsurelyhelp,"said Anna,"hopefultothelast,andupto anhourbeforetrain-timeontheday theyweretoleaveshesearched.
"Well.IguessSt.Anthonywent backonyouthistime,"herbrother saidteasinglywhentheywerefinally ontheirhomewardway,butAnna spokeupspiritedly.
"There'stimeenoughyet.Itmay befoundbeforethelastoftheSummervisitorsleave."
Butitwasnotdiscovered,although Annamadeanovenatothegood saint.Shesaidlittletothefolks aboutit,dreadingherbrother'steasing,butneveradaypassedthatshe didnotofferaprayerforthereturn ofhercross.Oftentimesshestepped intoherownnarishchurchandprayed,andlightedacandle;neveraday butshewatchedthemailforsome news.

TheWinterpassedandanotherSummercame,andthey.ieturnedto Mainetofindthatafirehadswept thewoodsontheoutskirtsofGranby. ThechapelwasgoneandtheSummer visitorsweredonatingmoneyfora permanentchurchinthecentreof Granby-moreconvenientforallconcerned.
Allhopefortherecoveryofthe crosswasapparentlygone,andthough sheoftensearchedtherewasless chanceoffindingitnow,asanew growthhadstarteduponthefiresweptarea.
OnherreturnhomeaftertheSummershemadeuphermindthatthe crosswasgoneforalltime.
"St.Anthonydidnotobtainmy wish."shesaid,"buttherewasprobablysomegoodreasonforit,andI shallnotthinkanymoreaboutit."
Withthislogicsheresolutelyput herlossfromhermind;butjustasif Godhadbeentryingherfaithand courage,socametheanswertoher prayer,andEileen,whohadbeenthe onetocausetheloss,wasalsothechief factorinitsreturn.
AnnahadtakenEileentovisitsome friendsinthesuburbsofBoston,and theywereobligedtocrossthecityon theelevatedcarsontheirreturn.
TheywereonaSouthStationtrain andseatedoppositethemwasagroup ofyoungmen,somewithdresssuitcasesandbags,somewithinstruments.Apparentlytheyweresurveyors-theirtannedfaceshelpingin thesurmise.
AfterthefirstglanceAnnapaidnoattentiontothem,havinganinterestingstorytoread,butEileenseemed fascinatedbytheinstrumentsand studiedthemwithachild'sunabashed curiositySuddenlyAnnafeltatuggingathersleeve,andEileenspoke excitedly:
"Aunty,Aunty,he'sgotyourcross."
Annagaveaglanceofstartleddismay;andsureenough,fastenedtothe fobhangingfromhispocketwasasilvercross!Surelytherewasnoother justlikehers,andrightinthecentre, justasinhers,wasanemerald.
Theyoungmanwasassurprisedat thechild'soutburstaswasAnnaherself.Heblushedredthroughhistan atherniece'saccusingfinger.
Annarecoveredherself.
"Sitdown,Eileen;youmustn'tact likethat,"shesaidsternly:butthe child'seyeswereblazing;sherememberedthelongsearchandhowshehad beencontinuallyquestioned.
"It'syours.aunty!it'syours!"she persisted,alivewithexcitement.
The Severalyoungmanbecameembarrassed. ofhispartywerewatchinghim quizzically.Anolderman,4pparent-
lytheengineerincharge,spoketohim, glancingatAnna,whohadreturnedto herstory,unmindfulofthefactthat shewasreadingapageofadvertisementsupsidedown.

"Weweresurveyingatractofland nearGranby,Maine.lastSpring,"he said."Therehadbeenafireinthe Autumnbefore,andwewaytheruins ofachapel.IhearditwasaCatholicchapel.Inmakingtheboundaries wecutintothetrunaofatreenear thechurch,andfoundithollow.There wasaverysmallopening,madeby someanimal.andinsidewereabouta dozenprayer-books.Wecouldnot getitthroughourheadshowthey camethere.I.beingtheonlyCatholicintheparty,tookchargeofthem andIthoughtthebestthingIcould dowastoburn-thelot.Thelastbuck whileburningturnedoveronitsside, andthiscrossdroppedout.Therewas nonameinthebook:nooneabout thetownseemedtoknowanything abouttheprayer-books,andImade nomentionofthecross.Thepriest whohadchargeofthechapelinthe Summerhadbeentransferredtoadistantplace;soIshowed;ttothefellowsandhungitonmywatchfobfor luck."
HehandedittoAnna,whoreceived itgratefully.Thentheyenteredinto explanations. "Eileenmusthavespenthertime pushingprayer-booksthroughthe hole,"theysaidlaughingly;nutEileen, whohadbeenlistening,madetheold persistentanswer: "Iputitinthebirdie'snest:"and thenlightdawneduponthemastoher meaning.
ThisfirstvisitofyoungMr.Burke wasnothislastbyanymeans,andas hegrewtobeafavouritewiththefamily,andalsotorealisethatthesincere regardhehadforAnnawasbeginning tobereturned,hesaidjoyfullytohimself: "ThecrossoftheO'Kelly'sseemsto havebroughtmetheirblessing,too."
