Themostimportantandimpressive gatheringthathasevertakenplacein SouthAustraliaonamatterassociatedwiththeCatholicChurch,occurred onSunday,October21.whenArchbishopSpence,inthepresenceofallthe leadingprelatesoftheChurchinAustralia,andanenormousattendanceof Catholics,performedtheceremonyof layingthefoundationstoneoftheextensionworksatSt.FrancisXavier's Cathedral,tobeundertakenatacost of1.50,000. Itwasanoccasionof jubilationandjoyfortheCatholics ofAdelaide,theCityofChurches,for theArchbishop,"whowasunableto giveexpressiontothethoughtsthat crowdedinuponhim,thoughtsofpleasure,delightandgratitudeatthewonderfuldemonstrationoffaithonSunday,"andforthepeopleofSouthAustralia.TheHierarchyofAustralia musteredingreatnumberstodohonourtotheoccasion,tothepeopleof AdelaideandtotheArchbishopof Adelaide.TheArchbishopspresent wereArchbishopKelly,ofSydney: ArchbishopClune,ofPerth;ArchbishopMannix,ofMelbourne;ArchbishopDuhig.ofBrisbane;ArchbishopBarry,ofHobart.TheBishops includedtheBishopofSale(Dr.Phelan),theBishopofSandhurst(Dr. McCarthy),theBishopofBallarat(Dr. Foley),theBishopofBathurst(Dr. O'Farrell).theBishopofWilcanniaForbes(Dr.Hayden).TheReligious OrderswererepresentedbytheProvincialoftheJesuits,theProvincial oftheFranciscans,theProvincialof theSacredHeartFathers,theSuperiorsoftheDominicans,thePassionists, theCarmelites.Manyvisitingpriests fromotherStateswerealsopresentto dohonourtotheoccasion.Itwasa gatheringthatisonlypossiblebytheCatholiccommunity,anassemblyessentiallyCatholic,whichbrought PerthandBrisbaneonthesameplatformwithMelbourneandSydneyand theirsuffraganSees.Adelaidehas neverwitnessedsuchanumberof Churchdignitariesassembledtodo herhonour,andtoAdelaidebethe creditofwelcomingitsdistinguished visitorsinmannerworthyofthecity ofculture.Thedailysecularpress wasgenerousinitsspaceanditsenthusiasm.Itrecordedfullybypen andcamerathechiefeventsofthe greatAdelaideWeek.Eachdaythe religiousceremoniesandthesocial gatheringswerethedominantfeatures ofitscolumns.

Interalia,itstated:"Theadditionof astatelyecclesiasticaledificetothe architectureofthecityisamatterof generalconcern.Morethananyother formofart,asplendidbuildingappealsdirectlytothemassesofthepeople. firstwelcomewasextendedtothevisitingprelates.Theconcertwasgiven by1.000children,andwasconducted ii-vRev.BrotherDowd,ChristianBrotilers'College.Themassedchoirof 1.000voicessang,astheopeningnum-

DuringtheintervaltheArchbisnop ofAdelaideaddressedthegreatconcourse,whichthrongedthebuildingmanythousandswaitingandlistening outsidethedoors.HisGracesaid thathisfirstdutywastothankHis ExcellencytheGovernorforhispresencetherethatevening.Youmay notknowwhattheCatholicsofSouth Australiahavebeeninthepast,and youmaynotknowmuchaboutthose ofthepresent,butcastyoureyeson thestageandbeholdwhatthefuture willbe.Ihaveareasonforaddressingyouhereinthecentreoftilehall, becauseIintendcallingonthevisiting prelatestoaddressyou,andIknow thattheyaresomodestandshythat wereItoaskthemtogoonthestage theywouldneveraddressyouatall. OnFridayeveningArchbishopMannixperformedthecoronationceremonyinconnectionwiththeQueen CompetitioninaidoftheKingswood PresbyteryforFatherCrowley.All thevisitingBishopsaccompaniedDr. Mannix.Onanopen-airstagean Irishconcertofexceptionalmeritwas givenbytheIrishPipers'Band.At theconclusiontheArchbishopofAdelaidscongratulatedthewinningqueen, andthankedtheBishopsfortheirpresence.Heremindedthem,however, thattheirnameswereontheprogramme,andthatanitemwasexpectedfromeachofthem.(Loudapplause.)

Theopeningspeechofwelcome,recitedbyMissSylviaWillcock,gave accurateexpressiontothereverent jubilationofallintheodeofwelcome, "SalvePastor,"composedbytheRev. BrotherleBreton,oftheChristian Brothers'College,Perth.Thiswas alsoembodiedinanilluminatedaddress,whichwaspresentedtoHis Lordship.
AselectionofIrishAirsbytheCollegeOrchestrawasrenderedwithwonderfulexpression,and,nodoubt.causedmanytoindulgeinretrospection.
The"CroppyBoy"wasparticularly good,andaseachpatheticphraserolledfromtheinstrumentsavividpictureofthechequeredhistoryofthe Gaelwasunfolded,andofthegolden linkswhichhaveeverboundthemto theirdivinelychosenpastors.Avery finevocalitem,whichwasspecially preparedfortheoccasion,wasasong ofwelcome,withchorus.Thesolo portionsweresuitablyrenderedby MissAlvaBurt,andthechorus,in whichalljoined,wasaccompaniedby theorchestra.Fromaspectacular pointofview,aRibbonDancebyt seniorpupilswasunsurpassed.The differenttableaugroupingswerevery striking,andonewouldexpectthe performerscouldneveremergewithoutatanglefromtheintricateinterlacingoftheribbons;thistheyaccomplishedwithoutahitchwithgraceand ease.Thesamemightbesaidofa dozenpupilsintheirPhysicalCulture display.Adancewasnicelyexecuted inperfecttimebyMissesImelda -2Mazzuchelli,NellieWalshe,andMallie -Burkhrat."Nocturne"wasexquisite. lysunginpartsbyMissesDianaMagripilis,AlvaBurt,BerylPond,and Mrs.Smith.Unseensingerssupplied tenorandbasstothesopranoandalto singersabovementioned,andtheeffectwasimpressiveintheextreme. However,hearrangedtopayitavisit, onethatwasrememberedforyears after.Hewenteverywhere,eveninto thesmallestvillages,preachedandgave Confirmationeverywhere,andsucceededinbringingbacktotheFoldmany whohadstrayedawayfromit.He paidashortvisittoBosco,hislittle birthplace,andendoweditwithaDominicanPriory.Thenheproceededto hisotherhomeequallydear,the PrioryofVigevano,wherehehadbegunhislifeasaDominican.This visitwascutshortbyamandatefrom Rome.St.CharlesBorromeo.ArchbishopofMilan,hadbeenentrustedby hisuncle,PopePius,withthecorrespondence'anddifferentmattersconnectedwiththeCouncilofTrent;and St.Charlesexpressedhisardentwishto haveCardinalAlessandrinotohelphim intheseweightymatterswhichinvolvedsomuchresponsibility.TheCouncilofTrentcloseditssittingsonthe 3rd.December,1563,andPopePius convokedtheCardinalstoapublicprocessionofthanksgiving,whichwas heldandproceededfromSt.Peter'sto theChurchofMinerva.Thedecrees oftheCouncilwereapprovedandconfirmedonthe26th.January,1564,and signedbyalltheCardinals.Tothe greatjoyofCardinalAlessandrino,the theologianswhowereappointedto drawuptheCatechismoftheCouncil ofTrentwereallchosenfromtheDominicanOrder.InfacttheHolyFather lostnoopportunityofshowinghis greatrespectforthesterlingqualities andeminentholinessoftheCardinal InquisitorGeneral.Andthis,althoughtheCardinalneverfailedtoobjectandprotest,wheneverbefeltit hisdutytodoso.Thus,forinstance, Whentwoyoungprinceswereproposed fortheCardinal'shat,thesaintlyCardinalstoodupandsaid:"YourHoliness,thedecreesoftherecentCouncil forbidsuchnominations;theChurch needsmenofmatureyearsinhercouniells,notchildrenlikethese."
AtlastCardinalAlessandrino,being exhaustedbyhisincessantlaboursand anxietiesinthecauseoftheChurch,a seriousillnessdeclareditself.Never foryearshadhebeensobrightandso happy,becausehethoughtthathet,as nearthegatesofthe"BetterLand."He arrangedthatheshouldbeburied "withmybrethreninourChurchof theMinerva,"andhedictatedhisepitaph,whichwastobe"engravedona veryplainmonument."However,the crisispassedaway,andhewasrestored totheChurch,andbeforemanydays hadelapsed,PopePiustheFourthdied inthearmsofhisdearfriends,St. PhilipNeriandSt.CharlesBorromeo.
NeverintheannalsofthePapacy didtheCardinalsgointoConclavewith afirmerresolutionandagreaterunanimityastothechoiceofanewPope, andnevesiwasaresolutionmorecompletelyalteredthanintheConclave whichfollowedthedeathofPiusthe Fourth,inA.D.1566.Alleyesseemed tobecentredonCardinalCharlesBorromeoasthefuturePope;heobtained alloralmostallthevotesfromthe veryirst.start.Itistruehewasex-
tremelyyoungtobemadeaPope.beingonlyabout28yearsofage:but thenhisangelicpiety,hisalmostsuper. humanwisdom,hisgreatqualitiesof mindandheart.recommendedhimto allasthefittestcandidateforelection. Oneobstacleroseup,itwasaninvincibleone,theinflexiblewilloftheCardinalhimself.Onnoaccountwould heconsenttobeelectedPope:noentreaties,noargumentscouldmovehim, hisrefusalwasfinalandirrevocable.At lasttwoothercandidatesseemedlikelytoobtainsufficientvotes,Cardinals MoroneandSirlet,butneitherofthese hadtherequiredmajority.Cardinal Borromeo,interrorlestthevotes mightreverttohimself,suddenlymentionedthenameofthereveredand saintlyCardinalAlessandrino.Itwas asifGodhadspoken,therewasinstantsubmissionandapproval.Three delegateswenttohisroomandtold himthatpracticallyhewasalready elected.Heappearstohavetaken littleornopartinthedeliberationsof theConclave:hespentalmostallhis timeinhisroom,prayingearnestlyfor theChurchofGod,justthensosorely triedandsomuchinneedofguidance andhelpfromonhigh,pouringouthis soulinprayertoGodalone.Hisquick andabsoluterefusalwasunheeded; theyledhimbyforcetotheSistine Chapel,andasheenteredthewhole assemblageofCardinalskneltdownto receivehim.Thevotingwasonlythe workofafewminutes."Pronounce youracceptance,MostHolyFather," commandedSt.CharlesBorromeo."all ofuswantyou,weareunanimous.I speakinthenameoftheChurchof God."Thenfromamidsthissobsand burstingintoanagonyoftears,came theanswer:"Icannot,Iamnotworthy."Itwaslongbeforetheycould calmhim,andbeforetheringofthe Fishermancouldbeplacedonhisfinger.Andyieldingtotheirearnestentreatiesandoft-repeatedwishes,heat lastexpressedhisacceptance,speakingintotheearofCardinalBorromeo inaverylowvoice,almostchokedwith sobs.Theworldmightnowbeinformedthattheresatonthethroneof St.Peter,thehere-afterworld-renownedPontiff,PiustheFifth.
Prudence,learningandsanctityascendedthethroneintheperson Pius."Sternandsevere,"wroteCardinalNewman,inourowndays,"asfar asaheartmeltingandburningwith divinelovewouldallowhimtobe." TheRomansbegantodreadtheinflexibleseverityoftheirnewSovereign; thisreachedtheearsofSt.Pius."Ah," saidhe,"sotheythinkthatIshallrule themwithanironrod.MayGod grantthattheymaygrievemorefor mydeathwhenIpassawaythantheyhavedoneformyelection."Andso theydid,thisreallycametopass.However,thecustomarydistributionof moneyonthedayofthePapalCoronationhadtogivewaytoabundantalms givenprivately"tothebashfulpoor, whoweresufferinginsilence,andper- hapstooproudtoapplyforhelp." Amongthenotableshrinesofthe HolyLandistheChurchoftheHoly Sepulchre.Thepresentchurchwas builtbytheCrusadersovertheruins ofSt.Helena'sstructureofthefourth century.ItenclosestheHolySepulchrewhencetheMasterrobegloriously onEastermorn,Calvarywherethe rentrocksstilltestifytothesacred tragedyoftheCross,thetraditional sitewheretheBlessedVirginandSt. JohnwitnessedtheCrucifixion,and finallythespotinthegardenwhere theRisenLordwasrecognisedby MaryMagdalenwhenHepronounced hername.
Ihadtheprivilegeofofferingupthe HolySacrificeoftheMassateachof thesealtars,exceptingonlythatofthe Crucifixion,whichtheOrthodox Greekshaveappropriatedforthemselves.
TheHolySepulchreitselfisadministeredbyCatholicsandSchismatic Greeks,Armenians,andCopts.The superstructureenclosingtheHolySepulchserisesupoverthetombinthree circularstorieswhichterminateina dome.TheGreeksoccupythehigheststory,theCatholicsandArmenians thesecond,andtheCoptsthethird. Heretheguardiansofeachritelive andwatch,andfromheretheyconducttheirsacredoffices.TheLatins begintheDivineOfficeatmidnight. Attheterminationofonehourthe Armenianssingtheofficeandcelebrate theMassoftheirriteattheHolySepulchre.Thisrequirestwohours. ThenfollowtheGreekswiththeservicesoftheirritefortwomorehours, attheterminationofwhichtheLatins returntotheHolySepulchreforMass. itisduringthisperiodthatpriestsof theLatinraceareallowedtocelebratetheHolySacrificeattheshrine.
Calvaryisreachedbyasteepflight ofstairsbetween30and50feetfrom theleveloftheHolySepulchre,and perhaps25yardsdistant.Thereare, ofcourse,manyotherinteresting shrinesinthechurch,whichthelimits ofthisarticleprecludementioning, OtherHallowedSpots.
AmongthemanyotherplacesofpilgrimageinandaboutJerusalemImay mentiononlyafew.OntheMountof theAscensionthereisanancient chapelsurroundedbyanenclosing wall.HereChristiansoftheOriental rites,atthetimeofourvisit,were pitchingtheirtentsforthecelebrationoftheFeastoftheAscension, whichtheOrientalskeepaweeklater thantheLatinsbecausetheystillfollowtheoldJuliancalendar.From thispointwehadathrillingviewof theheightsanddepthsofthesurroundingcountry.andfromthisspot wegotourfirstglimpseoftheDead Seainthedistance.ThepathofOur BlessedSaviour'striumphalprocession ofPalmSundaylayabout100yards fromthespotwheretheMasterascendedintoHeaven.ThiswefolloweddownthedeepgorgeoftheKidron toapointonthesideofthehillwhere traditionsaystheMasterhaltedthe processionandweptoverJerusalem. TheviewofthecityacrosstheValleyoftheKidronandespeciallyofthe MosqueofOmar,whichnowgccupies theverysiteoftheTempleofChrist's time,intheforeground,wasindeeda soulinspiringscene.

AnofficialannouncementoftheexecutiveoftheA.L.P.,inNewSouth Wales,willbeofmuchconcerntoawidecirclewhoareinterestedinLabour politics.Arecentofficialcircularstates:"TheExecuting,actinginconformitywiththerules,hasconsideredthepositionofmembersoftheCommunistParty,whoholdmembershipintheA.L.P.,andhasdecidedthatno CommunistwhoisamemberoftheCommunis,iPartymayremainamemberoftheA.L.P."The"whiteanting"whichgavesuchsecretpleasureto theextremewingofthesocialistmovementhasbeendroppeduponbythe A.L.P.,andnottoosoon,intheinterestsofthemasseswhoarenotattractedbythemadcapandvisionarydesignsofthrRedInternational.

AtarecentlittleCongregationalannualouting,whichgotpublicityin thedailypressfarbeyonditsproportions,Rev.Mr.WilliamsonLeggequotedthepatronagegivenbythe"GreatRomanCatholicChurch"andthe "sports"ofourcommunityasatellingreasonfortheprevalenceof gamblinginourmidst.Wearenotaccustomedtobeinggracedwithadistinctivetitlesuchasthisgentlemanhasgivenus,exceptontheoccasion whenwehappentobeonthewrongsideaccordingtothewowsers'idea. Wearerathermiscalledveryoften,andalludedtoasthe"Romanbranch oftheChurch,"asArchbishopRileyusuallydoes.Butthisisanaside. Thepublichasbecomesoaccustomedtotheseoccasionalandopportune protestsofacertainminorityofthecommunitythatithaslearnedtodespisetheseephemeraloutbursts.Th'iughapaltryminority,theyhavethe audacitytocallthemselvesthe"moralforceofthecommunity."Ifthey wieldaforce,itseffectisneverfelt.Thetruthistheyhavenoeffectonthe conscienceofmen,becausetheyhavel'initeddownthemoraloutlooktoinvisibility.Withthem,practicallyeveryhumanactismorallywrong.They havemistakentheGod-givengiftoflibertyforwhatwetermlicense.When Congregationalism,oranyoftheothersects,setsitselfouttoridusofour
freedom,itisourdutytotellthemthatourreligionisnotasyethidebound, thatourspiritualvisionisaswideasGodHimself,andthatnoonehas powertoalterordistortthatvisionbyafalselens.infine,thatreligion isnotman-made.
ThisapparentshockfromwhichMr.Leggeseemstosuffer,whenoccasion demands,isnotduetotheCongregationalsensitivenessofconscience,but itisratherduetotheirever-readydesiretobuttressuptheircausebyanattackonCatholicism.Protestantismmustprotestagainstsomething.Givinghislengthyorationatingeofanti-Catholicismdidtohimappearasfittingcoatingforthepillhewishedthe(tohim)gulliblepublictoswallow. WiththeallegedCatholicabuse,theministerlinkedthesportsofthe community.Well,weareingoodcompanyinmanyrespects,forinhis attack,Mr.Leggelevelledachargeagainstthemostcharitablepeopleofthe community;butthencharitydoesno:meanmuchnowadays.Thewowserswouldhaveusdoourcharitabledeedsbythe"directgiving"system. Thathasbeentried,andthecondemned"sports"'didallthegiving-the wowsersarebeatenattheirowngame.TheColonialSecretary,inhis answertothislengthyprotest,hintedattheinfiniteinjusticethatwould bedonetocharitableinstitutionsifthealreadynarrow-mindedlegislation ongamblingandlotterieswasmademorestrict.Butthewowsers'kenis toonarrowtoseethis.andhisheadtoosmallforthought.WewouldsuggestthattheseindividualswouldattemptasmuchgOodastheycan amongsttheirown,withoutmakingtheirflocktoridiculous,andceaseto blowtheirtrumpettoapublicthatdoesnotintendtoheedthem.

Butthegreatevilingambling,andtheevilwearefullyawareofand onourguardagainst,isitsliabilitytoabuse.Butwearenotheresiding withthewowsers'viewswhichsaythatgamblinginallformsisanindulgenceessentiallysinful.Toonewhomakesthispronouncementwesay: "SupportthecontentionbycitingthelawortheCommandmentthathas madeitso."Ourfeelingsabouttheevilconsequencesofgambling(only toonoticeableinallsectionsofthecommunity)arequiteasactivelyintense asthoseofthetypicalpuritan,butwedonotpermitourfeelingstorun awaywithus.Ifwearetobedenouncedasencouraginggambling,becauseweassertthatitisnotalwaysandunderallcircumstancesessentially sinful,then,too,wemustbepreparAforthechargeofencouraginggluttonybecausesometimesweeat,orthechargethatweencouragedrunkennessbecausesometimeswetakeadrink,orthechargethatweencourage sloth,becausewesnatcharest,orthechargeofencouragingextravagance becausewedonotpreachagainstthemanwhospendswhathecanafford onlawfulpleasureandamusements.DoesMr.Leggeeatnothingbecausefat peoplearesoplenty,neverdrink,becausedrunkennessissoprevalent,or dressbecausesomanyareextravagan:intheirraiment,ortakeaholiday becauseitmightencouragetramps,whoaresaidtotakenothingelse?
Clearly,somemindsaresocuriouslyconstitutedthat.itisimpossiblefor themtoseethatcircumstancesaltercases.Excessisacircumstancethat mustbetakenintoaccountwhenweighingupthemoralityofahuman act.Andwhatmaybemoderationinoneman'scase,maybeexcessin another.Eachmustbedecidedonitsownindividualmerits-inother words,intheconcrete,withallitsattendantcircumstances.
IfmenwouldonlylearnthattheChristianmissiondoesnotimposea dutyonustoerectfactorieswithloomsforwearingartificialsins,Christianitywouldthenbepractical.Therearealreadyenoughandtospareofthe realkindofsininthisworld,wheremenarebuttoopronetotrimtheir consciences,andignorethem,astosaildowntheriveroflifesmoothily, calmly,andcomfortably.Thereisnauseinhangingoutfalselights,for asfromtheheartlessSabbatarianteachingthechurchesofthesemenare nowemptyinourState,sofromextremeandmischievoustenetsabout gamblingtheremayspringforthareactiontooappallingtocontemplate. Sowthewind,andyoureapthewhirlwind.InallourCongregationalfriend's attackongamblinganditsadherentsandpatrons,hehasnotbeenattackingourteachingofthesubject,buthasbeenmerelypeltingpoisonedarrows atacardboardfortofhisownconstruction.

GREATPRIEST-ANOTABLEPERSONALITY.
OnlastThursdayevening,theoldest priestinthePerthArchdiocese,the VeryRev.DeanManeIlTydiedthe deathofthejustintheLord,atthe ageof86years-"Blessedaretheywho dieintheLord."Forty-fouryears agohewasaffiliatedtotheDioceseof Perth,thenapoordiocese,vastin area,butsparseinCatholicoccupationornumericstrength.Hitherto hehadspentmanyyearsofApostoTic tpilinIndia.Earlierstillhehadbeen asoldier,likeuntoSt.IgnatiusLoyola.AsaCatholicchaplaintothe Indianforceshehadattainedtherank ofMajor,andmanywerethereminiscencesofhiscareerasMajor-Chaplain atLahore.Inhisreminiscentmomentshewouldcontrasttheposition oftheCatholicfaithwiththatofthe Protestantfaith,asshownbytheIndiansinthatthicklypopulatedisland.Itisnoexaggerationtosayhe oftendeclaredthattheCatholicpriest isidolisedbytheIndianCatholics,and mosthighlyrespectedbyallclasses andcastesofthenatives,whereasthe anti-Catholicministersarejustregardedforwhattheyare,inthenatives' esteemlaymen.Afterhismany laboriousyearsinthetropics,his healthcompletelybrokedown,andon thebestmedicaladvicehecameto Australia.andwassooninactive workatFremantle.-Lateronhewas appointedtoBunbury,andmade DeanoftheSouth-Westerndistricts. Theparishthencomprisedthetown itself,Busse1ton,and.allthevastarea nowincludedintheBusseIton.Brunswick,andCollieparishes.Aboutthe year1909hiseyesightbegantofail. andfeelinghewasnotequaltothe workofever-increasingmagnitude,he resignedparochialresponsibility.For theeightsubsequentyearsheresided atSt.JosephsOrphanage,atSubiaco. wherehiskeenobservationandholyexamplemadethesweetestimpression onthethrongofyounglivescommittedtohisspiritualguidance.Two yearsagohereturnedtoBunburyas ChaplaintotheConvent.ThisNaas hislastappointmentinthislife.There heledhislifeofsombreloneliness. followinginhisMaster'sfootsteps,and everpreachingbyhisexemplarylife. Few,ifany,thoughthisendwasso near.Undertheunremittingcareof theSisters,heseemedtokeepperenniallyvigorous,untiltwomonthsago. Sincethen,thougheverymedicalskill wasgivenhim,hedidnotrespond.His deathwasalmostsudden.Afterhis eveningmealhehadaslightseizure. Helapsedintoapparentunconscious ness,inwhichberemaineduntilthe afternoonofthefollowingday.Withoutpainorstruggleoragony,withhis beadsandcrucifixfirmlygripped,he awaitedthefinalsummons,andthen. asifgentlyfallingasleep,bodyand soulseparated.Hewasdead.Duringhisillnesshewasattendedby ArchdeaconSmyth.
OnSaturdaymorningat9o'clock. agreatconcourseofpeoplefilledthe church,wheretheremainslay.All thepriestswhocouldarrangetocome fromfarandnearwerepresent,includingVeryRev.FatherFagan(West Perth),FatherFinnegan(Armadale), FatherO'Callaghan(Perth),and FatherHayes(VictoriaPark),Fathers McCormack,Briody,Doddy,and O'Grady.ArchdeaconSmythpresidedattheOffice,andsangtheRequiemMass,thedeaconbeingFather Doddy,sub-deaconFatherMcCormack.andFatherFaganmasterof ceremonies.Theparochialchoirsang theMass,ablyassistedinthemore intricatepartsbyFathersFinnegan, O'Callaghan,andO'Grady.
Thelastblessingbeinggiven,the Ven.ArchdeaconSmythmadefeeling referencetothedeceased.Hesaid thatthisfinecongregationwaspresenttopayitstributeofdutyand honourandrespecttothemortalremainsofthelateDeanMartelli.It seemedonlyafewhourssincehereceivedthesummons,andhewasfound watchingandwaiting,andeasilysyieldeduphissoultoHimwhomhehad faithfullyservedintheeternalpriest. hoodforsixtyyears.Agreatpart ofthatunusuallylonglifewasspent amongyou.Youknewhimwell.You observehimto-dayclothedasoften 3-ousawhimbefore-inthesacrificial vestmentsofChrist'spriesthood.For yearshestoodbeforeyouinsimilar vestments,facetofacewithGodat thealtar,andpleadingforyouand preachingHimtoyouandimploring ofyoutoserve,honourandloveHim. To-dayheissilent.Thetonguewhose accentyoucanremembernolonger nreaches.northreatens,norwarns you.Thehandswhichyousooften sawliftedupinprayerandsacrifice
arelifelessandhelpless.Theeyes whichsawyouinyouthandinolder ageseeyounomore.Theheartthat lovedyouforGod'ssakethrobsno more-thesimplethoughimposingfigureandpersonalityliesmotionlessin thecoffinsleepingthesleepthatknows nowaking.Everybody,irrespective ofcreed,honourshisremainsto-day, andthekindandcharitablewordfinds utteranceoneverylip,andallfeel thatwearepoorerforhisloss.
Whythismanifestationofhonour andaffection?Hewasapriestof God,ahighpriestwhoofferedthe adorablesacrifice,andforgavesin!No angelorarchangelcandoasmuch. HewasawiseservantoftheDivine Master,whobroketheBreadofLifein dueseason,andfaithfullypersevered for60yearsinthemeritoriousdischargeoftheseresponsibilitiesin everyoneofwhichhispersonalsanctitywaseverevidentandcompelling. Heknewyouandwatchedoveryou. Aslittlechildrenhereceivedyoufrom yourmothersandgaveyouanew birth,anewposition,anewdestinyfrombeingofthefleshhemadeyouof thespiritbyBaptism.Heinstructed youforConfirmation.Heprepared youfortheHolySacramentofPenance,bywhichheforgaveyouyour sins.Hewasknowntarandwideas amostprudentConfessor-aslaveof theConfessional.Anytime,anywhere-distanceordifficultydidnot count-hewouldspeedtothesickand feeldelightedthathehadrestored onemoresoultoitsoffendedGod.He offeredSacrifice,morelikeangelthan man.Hepassionatelybeggedthe youngandoldthecometoJesusin theHolyCommunion.Whenweigheddownbytheweightofyears,and thepowerofhisphysicalstrength,with thelastsurvivingmimeofenergyhe triedtooffernotoncebutmany timestheadorableSacrificeofthe Mass.Hewaslikethatwiseservant pronouncedblessedbyJest'sChrist, whomwhenhisLordcamefoundhim sodoing.LikeeveryzealousservantofGodhehadhisworriesand disappointments.Herejoicedor mournedasyouroseorfell.Nobody knowsthementalanguishofagood priestbutGodHimself.Hewasa goodpriest,andmorethanoncehis soulgroanedinagonyatthedefection ofoneonwhoseinflexiblecharacterhe wouldhavestakedhislife. Notonlydidhefeedhispeoplewith thewordofGodandtheSacraments. butheedifiedthem-heedifiedyou withtheexampleofaholylife.No matterwhathisdifficultiesorimportunities,heneverswervedfromhis dutytoGodasHispriest.Hiscalm austerityofmaner.hiscalculatedwisdom,soevidentinhissilenceincompany,hisdisinterestednessinworldly things,yetwithalhissimewdbusiness acumen,alwaysintendandenshrinedinaspiritualsetting,stamped himasamanofGod,whoneverlost sightofhiseternaldestiny.Especiallywasheamanofprayer.Everywherehisbeadsseemedpresent.Travelling,resting,meditating.preparing forMassandafter,thebeadswasto beseenfoldedinhisfingers-each beadapearl,eachpearlaprayer.I haveseenhimonearlyanddark morningsofthewinterhuddledupis achairtellingthebeads,anddeadto allthingseternal.asifheweresunk inthebosomofGod.
Ihavetriedtogiveyouaglimpse ofDean_Martelliinlife.Youpicture himasAsaint.YouseehimalreadyinHeaven.MayGodgrantit;but Heavenisbeyondthoughtordescriptionasareward,andtheLordofit assuresusthatnothingdefiledcanenterthere.Apriestisoftentheleast rememberedafterdeath.Hislifeof sacrifice,oflabour,oflove.ofprivation,aresoonforgotten.Doyounot forgetyourone-timepastor.Prayfor himandprayconstantly,thatifanythingremainsunrepenteditmaysoon beblottedout,andhissoulbeadmittedtothevisionofGod.
