ThereportoftheSixthCommission recommendingtheadmissionofIrelandwasapprovedbyaunanimous voteoftherepresentativescgthe world.
Therewasaremarkablemanifestationofenthusiasmwhenthedelegates oftheSaorstatfiledupthehall,allthe membersrisingandcheering,loudly.
Anothersignalhonourwasthefact thatPresidentCosgravewascalledon immediatelytoaddressthegathering.
TheIrishleaderspokefirstinGaelicandtheninEnglish.thankingthe Assembly"onbehalfofoneoftheoldestyetoneoftheyoungestnations." World'sTribute.

NotalonetheAssemblyHall,but alsothevisitors'andPressgalleries werecrowdedthismorningtowitness theentranceofthedelegatesofthe IrishFreeStatetotheLeagueofNations,andtherewasamagnificertdisplayofenthusiasmandwarm-heartedness.
M.Meirovics,rapporteur,readthe reportoftheSixthCommission.111a.1.mouslyapprovingIreland'sclaimfor admissiontotheLeague,andapublic ballotwasthentaken,thenamesof theforty-sixStatesrepresentedbeing calledinalphabeticalorder.Thefirst delegateanswered:"Yes,"andfollowed theunanimousapprovalofalltheassembledrepresentatives.Thenthe President,M.deTorrientedePeeaza, ofCuba,amidremarkablescenesof enthusiasm,proclaimedIrelandelected
TheCredentialsCommitteedeclared thecredentialsofPresidentCosgrave, Dr.EoinMacNeill,andMr.Desmond Fitzgeraldinorderasdelegates,and thePresidentthereuponinyitedtherepresentativesoftheIrishnationto taketheirplace.
PresidentCosgraveandhisfellowdelegatesrosefromtheplacesoccupied bythemandenteredtheAssembly.All theotherdelegationsalsoroseand, amidstaregularstormofapplause,Mr. Cosgrave,bowingtothePresident,led thedelegationupthehalltotheplace allottedtothem,theIrishtablebeing placedbetweenthoseofHaiti,New Zealand,andNorway.
M.deTormienteimmediatelycalled onthechiefoftheIrishdelegationto addresstheAssembly,andMr.Cosgravemountedtheplatform,wherethe Presidentshookhishandwarmly.

OnSaturdaylast,the20th.inst.,the finaldanceoftheseasonwasheldin theClubRooms,and,asanticipated, wasahugesuccess,bothsociallyand financially,andthemembersofthe dancecommitteearetobecongratulatedontheirendeavoursThehall wasmostartisticallydecoratedwith fernsandothergreenery.Themusic, 'whichwasrenderedbyMissD.Darcy andMr.Russell,wasbyfarthebest suppliedduringtheseason,andwas muchappreciatedbythedancers,and itistoberegrettedthatthecommitteecouldnotobtainthenecessary authoritytoengagealikeorchestra earlierintheseason.
OnNovember4th.theannualCommunionBreakfastwillbeheldinthe ClubRooms,andallmemberswhodesiretobepresentonthatmorningare requestedtohandtheirnamesinto thesecretary(MissSmith)asearlyas possible. Alargeattendanceof members(past,presentandfuture)is expected.
literarytreatofunusualquality wasenjoyedbytheClubonFriday, the19th.,whenBrotherRahill eredalectureon"DickensasaSocial Reformer."Thelectureoriginallyintendedtobegivenwason"TheHumourofDickens,"butBrotherRahill explainedthatowingtopressureof workhedidniothavethetimetopreparenotesonsuchawidesubject,and hadchosentheotherasadmittingof moreconcentrationunderfewerheads.
Dickens,thelecturersaid,hada greatloveofhumanity,andhispersistentadvocacyofthecauseofthe poorandthedowntroddeninformed allhisworks.Hewasthebeginner ofthegreatwaveofhumanitarianism thatsweptoverEnglandatthelatter endofthe19th.centuryandthebeginningofthe20th.,manyotherwritersemulatingDickensinwritinghumanitariannovels,some,however,with disastrousresults.
BrotherRahilldealtwithDickens' workasasocialreformerunderthe followingheads,asaneducatorand championoftherightsofchildren,as anadvocateofhousingandsanitary reform,andofParliamentary,Poor Law,andPrisonreform.Hedescribedinaninterestingmannerthe inicrt'tiesoftheYorkshireschoolsin ns'time,takingasexamplesof the tality,cunningandavariceof theschoolmastersoftheseschools,the famousMr.Squeers,inNicholasNickleby,Mr.BumbleinOliverTwist, andMr.CreakeinDavidCopperfield. Assistedbyextractsfromthevarious works,hedepictedthepatheticexperiencesofNicholasNickleby,Oliver Twist.andDavidCopperfield,andin lighterveindescribedthecurioussys, temofeducationexistentinthe schoolattendedbylittlePaulDombey.AsaresultofDickens'attacks, althoughatthetimetheyexcited muchenmity,theYorkshireschools. andindeedallothersoftheirtype, wentoutofexistence.
Dickens,too,condemnedtheinhumanpracticeofobtainingchildren fromorphanagestobeapprenticedto chimneysweeps,againstwhichLord Shaftesburyalsodirectedhisenergies.
Onthequestionofhousingandsani taryreform,BrotherRahillspoke withgreatconvictionandfeeling,and onesoonrealisedthatthiswasa phaseofsocialreforminwhichhe
himselfwa,deeplyinterested.Dickenswrotearticleafterarticle,condemningthelivingconditionsofthe poor,whichcompelledattentionand stirredthedrowsyParliamenttoaction.
Dickens,whowasatonetimeareporterintheHouseofCommons,conceivedaheartycontemptfortheineffectiveandcorruptstateofEnglish Governmentandpolitics,whichheattackedwiththeweaponsofridicule andsatire.Inthisconnection,the lecturerreadapassagefrom"Bleak House,"whichevokedmuchmerriment.Dickenstookupthecudgels withgreaterzealandearnestness againstthePoorLawsandtheiniquitiouspracticeofimprisonmentfordebt. Asanexampleofthis,thelecturer describedthelifeofLittleDorrit,who whobornintlarshalseaPrison,where herfatherwasdetained,andwhofor manyyearsknewnothingoutsidethis livingtomb.
BrotherRahilltouchedonthe FrenchRevolution,whichisthebackgroundofDickens'novel,"TheTale ofTwoCities,"asanexampleofthat inhumanoppressionwhichdrivesthe oppressedtosuchexcessesascharacterisedthatandotherrevolutions.
Heconcludedhislecturebyadmittingthatthereweremanydefectsto hefoundinDickens'work,andmuch tocriticise,buthisgreatworkforthe downtrodden,hisloveofhumanity, andthegoodwhichthevigoroususe ofhispenaccomplished,justifiedwhateverofexaggerationorinaccuracy maybecomplainedofinhisworks.

OnSaturday,thelath,hisGrace theArchbishoparrivedbymotor,and on earlySundaymorningcelebratedthe Mass.SolargewarthenumberofCommunicants,thathisGrace afterwardssaidhehadneverinhis timeseenanythinglikeitinYork-a tributenolessnoblethengenerous fromtheleadingoratoroftheRedemptoristOrderinAustralia.Asthe eloquenceandzealoftheyouthful missionary,hisGraceappealedwith successtothecongregationsatboth MassesinYork,andthenproceededto Greenhills,fifteenmilesout,where HolyMasswascelebratedbyDean Walshat10.30.Attheclostofthe Mass,hisGraceappealedforfundsfor thenewcathedral,andthegoodCatholicpeopleofthisagriculturalcentrerespondedgenerally.

HarrydeWindt,authorandexplorer,inhisrecentlypublishedbookof memories,tellsagoodstoryaboutFatherBarnum,aJesuit,whowaswell knowninhisday.Oneofthemostmodestofmen,whocouldhardlyever beenticedintofashionablesociety,FatherBarnumwaspresentwithhimat asmartdinnerpartyinNewport.Thepriesthadcomereluctantly,andthe hostessthoughtitnecessarytoapologisefortheoutrageouslylowgownwhich oneofherguestswaswearing."Oh,don'tmindme."repliedFatherBarnum."Ihavebeenamissionary."

AndagainstChristianityhasbeenpiledupthefailuresofsocietyandthe weaknessesofGovernment.ThesurveyofReligion,aswefinditoutside theCatholicChurch.withitsmanyandvarieddifferencesandprogrammes;itsshiftingdoctrinesandnebulousness,anditsslavishconformitytohumandesires,wouldleadacasualobserverwhoselazyeyes couldnotloOkbeyondthewarringarenaoftheundisciplinedsects,toanswerthequestionofthecynicintheaffirmative.
Inthestrifeandcompetitionofthenationsformaterialdeveloprilent; inthefiercestruggleofLabourwithCapitalforthethingsthatareseen: andinthedaringwarofintellectualismagainstrevealedreligion,civilisationthathasbeenbuiltupbycenturiesofGod-likeeffortbythemissionariesofChrist,isbeingthreatenedbyfeudscalculatedtodestroythefoundationsofChristianlifeandcharacter,andbytheencroachmentsofGovernmentsuponthelibertyofReligion.ThephilosophyofthePaganPlato taughtinthedimagesagoisto-daybeingacceptedinpreferencetothe teachingsofChrist.andgraduallyunderthelabelofprogressivelegislation anddemocraticadvancementisbeingincorporatedinourlaws.Society initsdesireforself-gratificationissneakingawayfromthemandatesof theGospelofChrist,andthegodsofpleasureandunrest,drunkenandirresponsible,holdcommandoftheincentives.passionsandmovementsofa greatsectionofmankind.Thissectionisadvancinginlicentiousnessand imperiousness,andifnotchallengedbythedisciplinedhostingsofreligionineveryland,willeventuallypulldownintheirmaddeliriumthe wholefabricofcivilsociety.Atthebeginningofthe20th.century.Leo XIII.wrote:"CivilSociety,nolessthanreligion,isimperilled;itisthe sacreddutyofeveryright-mindedmantoheupindefenceofboththeone andtheother."To-dayitisnotanexaggerationtosaythattheskeleton ofAtheismisleeringatuseverywhere.

OnthelastdayofOctober,1898,six piofessedSistersfromtheConventof Mercy,Derry,arrivedinWesternAustraliatodo,astheywerebidden, whattheycouldfortheinfantChurch intheDioceseofPerth.Whenthey arrivedinPerththerewasnodefinite fieldforlabour,andtheyremember withgratitudetothisdaythesisterly hospitalityofSt.Brigid'scommunity, whoopenedtothemthedoorsoftheir littleconvent,andsharedwiththem,hatevercomfortsthatcommunity possessed.BishopGibneyhidnot thenreturnedfromIreland,andthree monthspassedbeforetheywere.given aplaceinVictoriaPark.
Prospectswereno'better;buttheir confidenceinGodremainedstrong.Mr. Claffey,theirgreatfriendtothisday, gaveoverhishousetoshelterthem, andheretheyremainedfor12months. LittlementionismadebytheSisters ofthosedays,butthecontrastbetweenthestatelyConventatDeilyand thelittlehomeattheParkmusthave suppliedfoodforthoughtattimes.A conventwasthenprovidedtoaccommodatesixSisters,andin1909additionsweremade.Afurthertrialawaitedthemin1915,whenverylittleof conventandcontentsweresavedfrom afire.ThistimethePresbyterywas givenfortheirusebythelateDeanO'Reilly.Thereareatpresent13Sistersinthecommunity,andwithoutthe servicesofanenclosedverandahfor sleeping,itwouldbehardtoimagine howroomcouldbefoundinthelittle conventforthem.Evenwithoutfurther needed,vocations,extensionsareurgently andfurthervocationsarenecessarytorelievethealreadyoverworkedteachingstaff.Vocationswill comeinGod'sgoodtime,andperhaps therearefriendswhowouldlenda handtowardsprovidingwaysand meanstomaketheextensionspossible.

Withocr30specialtrainsarriving inDublinfrompracticallyallpartsof Ireland,thecrowdmusthaveconstitutedarecord.Fromthemoment thegateswereopenedaboutone o'clock,therewasasteadystream throughtheseveralentrances. This continuedwhilethefootballmatch wasinprogress.andbythetimethe hurlerslinedoutshortlyafter3.30. CrokeParkgroundspresentedtheappearanceofbeingfilledtooverflowing.
Itwasagreatmassofhumanity,all classesbeingrepresentedintheimmensehostingdrawntogetherfrom everycorneroftheland.Tojudge fromtheattendanceandenthusiasm, thegamesoftheGael,andmoreespeciallythenationalpastimeofhurling,ocupyahigherdegreeofpopularityto-daythaneverbefore.
High-ClassHurling.
Thecontestprovidedareallyhighclassexhibition,theplayallthrough reachingastandardthathasrarely,if ever,beenequalled.Outstandingfeatureswerespeed,dash,closetackling. andquick,accuratestriking.Itwas surprisingtheveryfastpacethatwas maintainedfromstarttofinish.Both teamsgaveevidenceoftrainingand practiceinplenty,forthe players weregoingasstrong,ifnotstronger, intheclosingminutesthaninthe earlierstages.
Tipperary,takenallround,appearedtobetheheavierbodyofmen,but anythingKilkennymayhavewanted inweighttheymadeupforinother respects.Theyareayoungteam, possessedofallthequalitiesthat madeKilkennyhurlingfamousinthe past.Withtheexceptionoftheveteran.DickGrace,ofTullaroan,they weremakingtheirfirstappearancein anAll-Irelandfinal,andthatthey camethroughthetryingordealwith flyingcoloursisatributetothesterlingstuffofwhichtheyaremade.They certainlydidbetterthanwouldhave manyamuchmoreexperiencedselection.Whereallgaveacreditableaccountofthemselves,itwouldbeinvidioustoparticularise.sufficeitto saythateverymanofthe did hispartanddiditwell.

Shelaughedagain,joyously.Shewas alwayslaughingthesedaysfrompure delightofliving.Theworldwasa pleasantplace,shethought,especially whenonehadtheadditionalsatisfac tionofrealisingit.Lornarealiseditalright;afterthethreedrearyyears

Dick,inthisinstance,wasn'tfar out.Lorna,withhereagerfaceand sparklingeyes:herhappysmileand happiernature,wasirresistible,andno one(exceptherself)foundanythingto wonderatinhischoice.She,however,wonderedatitenoughforthem all.

Theyenteredtogether.Therewere vacantseatsintheback,andtheyslippedinnoiselessly.Dickgazedround himcuriously,somethingofsurprise depictedinhisglance.Hehadcome, hardlyconsciousofanydefiniteexpectation,butperfectlypreparedforsome sortofmildlyboringentertainment; theimpression,however,fadedimmediately.Somewaythingsweredifferenthere-itgaveoneapeculiarimpressionofhavingsteppedintoalittle worldapart,awayfromthenoiseand bustleandstrifeofliving.Thelights andflowersandmusic,theincense,the solemngrandeurofeverythingimpressedhimqueerly.Itwasbeautiful,peaceful----
Reallyitwasjusttheatmosphereof everyCatholicChurchthatharbours thePepetualPresence;butitwasan atmospherewithwhichDickWeston wasentirelyunfamiliar.
Whataffectedhimmostwasasubtle Something-Somethingthatlightedtip thefacesofallthesepeople,andthe wantofwhichlefthimselfcold,unmoved,strangelyapart.Heglanced atthekneelinggirlbesidehim.Yes, thismysteriouspossession,whateverIt was,belongedtoLornaalso.
Ofasuddenthemusicceased;there wasanalmostbreathlesshush,broken inamomentbyaclear-tonedbell,and thepeopleinonegreatwavebowed downbeforeSomething-theSomething--thatthepriestheldaloft.Unconsciously,Dickbowed,too-hehardlyknewtoWhom.
ToLornaeverythingwasperfectly familiar-justapartofherchildhood comeback,soothing,restful,curiously comforting.Butonethoughtspoilt everything.Onethought,despiteall herefforts,wouldbeobtruded-a knowledgethatshewaspracticallycuttingherselfadriftfromitallforever. Thenthebellpealed,andamidallthe actsofadorationthatascendedtothe ThroneofGod,shesentupanimpulsive,halfunwillingpleaforstrength.
"Well,"Dickremarked,"youwere right,Lorna-itisbeautiful.Thereit somethinginthere-inyourChurchthatgrips.Iwouldn'tsomuchmind belongingtoareligionlikethat-supposing,ofcourse.Iwantedtobelong toany_Buttheothersseemsuchmilkand-wateraffairs."

Shecamedowntobreakfastnext morninglookingtiredandstrained,and withdarklinesunderhereyes,but whentheyquestionedhershejust laugheditoff,andsaidshehadrather aheadache,theresult,shesupposed,of toomuchgaiety.But-yes,shewould stayathometo-day,thentomorrow shewouldprobablybequitewzllagain.
Asamatteroffactshehaddecided somehoursbeforethatshe,wouldstay home,notthroughanyreas.nconcerningtheheadache,hutbecause,withall herdreadofthecominginterviewshe realisedthatunlessitweresoonover shecouldnottrustherownstrengthto remaintruetohergoodresolutions.
