TheAnglicanArchbishopofMelbourne.Dr.Lees,isnotpleasedwith therecentAnglo-CatholicCongressrecentlyheldinLondon.saysthe"Tribune."TheCongresswasthemost remarkableAnglicandemonstration everwitnessed.Dr.Lees'viewofthe Congressisthatofthe"indignantremonstrance"ofthe"ChurchTimes." theLowChurchorganoftheEstablishment.Dr.Leesthinksthemessage tothePope"foolish:"thattheCongresswas"letdown,givenawayand prejudicallyinjuredforthefutureby whatnoonecouldhaveexpectedor believedpossible."

TheCongresswasremarkableinthat itconsistedofthemostdistinguished membersoftheAnglicanbody.More remarkablestill.itsdecisionswereunanimous.WhentheBishopofLondonleftthechair,themessagetothe HolyFatherwasaunanimousvoice. Almostthesamewastheadoptionof theprinciplethat"itistheMassthat matters."TheCongressrepresented thenearestapproachtoCatholicity everymadebyAnglicanism.andmade manifesttheextraordinary.leaningto theancientfaithandreligiouspracticesofEnglandthatpossessesavast sectionofAnglicans,andthatsection embraeingthemostdistinguished namesintheChurchofEngland.If theCongresswas"letdown."etc.,itwastheunanimousvoteoftheCongressthatletitselfdown.

Dr.Lees.however.istoalargeextentconsistent.HeisaProtestant. andheknowsit.andadmitsit.The Anglo-CatholicCongresswasalsoaProtestantgathering.butdidnotknowit norallowit.Yet.thesincerityand pietyandlearningofmanymembers oftheCongresssuggestahopethat manyofthem.likeManningandNewmanofanearlierday,willfollowthe "KindlyLight"thatwillleadthemto betrulyandreallyCatholics.MeanwhilethemessagetotheHolyFather willnotberegardedbyCatholics,as itwasnotbythemembersoftheConpress.as"foolish."Thepaternalheart oftheSupremePontiffislargeenough toembraceinsympathyeventhose whoareoutsidethefold.Dr.Lees' viewsareanindicationoftherising tideofthecleavagethattheproceed. ingsoftheCongresswillsurelybeget betweentheHighChurchandUltraProteetantsectionsofAnglicanism. Somelooklike,somesmelllike,none TasteLikeUNIONBEER.

None,senttoWrangelIslandtorelieve Mr.H.Crawford,hasreturnedandhas announcedthatallthemembersofMr. Crawford'spartyexceptanEskimo womanaredead.Inabottlewas foundadeclarationbytheunfortunatemen(A.Crawford,L.E.Knight, M.GalleandF.Maurer)thattheybad claimedtheIslandinthenameofKing George.TheEskimowomanwhen founowasinthelaststateofexhaustion.Crowiord,whowasonly22,was anativeofToronto,andhiscompanionswereAmericans.TheEskimo womanaccompaniedtheexpeditionto makeclothes.Effortsarebeingmade tosecuretheco-operationoftheSiberianGovernmentinascertainingthefate ofMr.AllanCrawfordandniscompanionsonWrangelIsland.SirEdwardWalker,whohasbeenassociated withMr.StefanssoninPolarexpeditions,sayshehasnotgivenuphope offindingtheCrawfordpartyalive.He suggestssendingsearchpartiestothe Northinanendeavourtolocatethe missingmen.

Mr.RudyardKiplingwaslatelyinstalledasLordRectoroftheUniversityofSt.Andrews,insuccessiontoSir JamesBarrie,andontheoccasionmadewhatthecablemancalleda "wittyaddress,basedonRobert Burn'slinesonthegloriousprivilegeof beingindependent."Havingmislaid myprimerofpoetrybyMacDougall,I amnotquitesurewhetherRobert Burnswroteanythingmoreglorious dealingofindependencethan"Aman's amanfora'that,"and.asthesesweet springdaysinducealassitudeofmind whichmakesoneregardtheturningof pagesasalabour.Iforbeartoresolve thequestion,andshalltakeitthat''A man'saman"isthepoemthatinspiredMr.RudyardKipling'saddress.

Firstofall,itisapitythatMr.RudyardKiplingevermadesuchanaddressastheflippancyflashedtoFriday'sworld'snewspapers.Alsoitisa pitythatMr.RudyardKiplingever _read"aman'saman,"ifthebesthe 'couldgetoutofitisthateveryman 'isaliar,andbegantobethat,atthe timethatheceasedtobeamonkey.

Certainly,theaddressofathenew LordRectorwasquiteinkeepingwitn thosefrolicsomeceremonies.Funand frolicarequiterightintheirownplace andseason,andtheywerequitein placeattheinstallationceremonyby rightoftradition,buttheLordRectorhasnorightoftraditiontoauthorisehimto"blowbubbles"withthe crowd,andhisaddressshouldhave badinitsomeelementsthatwould havemadeforsolidityandfortruth.I laveavastrespectforahumorist, whenthehumorist,likeBrutus'poet, "knowshistime,"andwhenMr.RudyardKiplingtriestobefunny,and whenhesucceedsinbeingfunnywhich isbetter,Iamreadytolaughwith him-"I'llknowhishumourwhenhe knowshistime."

Biblicalscholarsarenotpreparedto admitthatAdam.withhisfirstuseof speech,told"afrigid,calculatinglie." TheBookofGenesisdoesnotpurport, orpretend,torecord,everywordof AdamandEvebeforethefall.-The pointisnotoftheleastimportance,but Mr.Kipling,whoisduetogivegood exampletothethoughtless,should knowbetterthantobroadcastsucha flippantassertionfromsuchavenerablelocusastheLordRector'sChair ofSt.Andrew'sUniversity.

Adam'sliewascertainlynothisfirst utterance:Adam'sliewascertainlynot acoldone:itwasofitsverynature madewithwarmth(heatperhaps), withinterest,andanearnestnessas greatasthatexercisedbytheflippant LordRectorofSt.Andrew'sUniverilkty,inmakinganassemblageoflearnedandsensiblepeoplelaughlastThursdaynight.

Mr.Kipling,disregardingtheholy warninggiveninhistouchingpoem. "LookOut."proceedstosay:"Thesuccessofhisearlyliesshowedmanthat hewasamiracleworker.Couldhebe blamedforthinkinghimselfagod?"

Yes.Mr.Kipling.hecouldbeblamed forthinkinghimselfa'god,firstofall becausehewasaman,andwhena man'saman,wellheisaman.Secondly,hecouldbeblamedforthinking himselfagod,forhehaddoneviolence tothefirstattributeofGodwhichis Truth.GodisTruth.ThemostoppositethingtoGodis"everyonethat thinkethandmakethalie,"primarily andprincipally-thedevil,whoisthe fatheroflies,and"thetruthisnot inhim."Thedevilmakinghimself thearch-liarofeternity,emptiedhimselfofallthatwasGod-like,andearthlypowerislike*tothedevil'swhen truthfliesorfall.s,andleavesinstead deceit,anddeception,andfalsetestimony.

Mr.Kipling'smanmakesaterrible mistakewhenhemeasuresindenend. oncebythesuccessofhislies.Itisthe truthonlywhichcansnakeusfree,and whoeverisevenexcusablymistaken,is thelessindependentforit.Youwho arehonestlyinerroronanypoint,areboundandcircumscribedbytheconsequencesofyourmistake.Ifyou,for instanceforegogoingtoComothis afternoonbecauseyouthinkitwill rain,youareafoolfornotbelieving Mr.Curlewisifhehasforecasteda fineday.Youstayhomeandkeep dry,andthepeoplewhogotoComo goabroadandkeepdry,truth.makes themfree,whileyourfanciedindependenceenslavedyou.Itenslavedyour bodybyincarceratingyoubehindthe picketsandthegardengate,andthe frontdoor:itenslavedyourmind,becauseyoubelievedanuntruththatput yourthoughtswonderingamongumbrellasandovercoatsforwhichthere wasnooccasion.Thereareaspects oftruthofmuchmoreconsequence thanComoorCottesloeBeach,worse mistakescouldbemadewithcastor oil.butthepointisthatyouarenot moreindependentbecauseyouelectto believewhatisnottrue.Inspiteof thepoetof"honestdoubt."Icanassureyouthatthehonestdoubtdoes notsavethebrainsofthemanwho pullsthetriggerofaloadedgunbelievingittobenotloaded.No,the truthmattersverymuch,andweare lessindependentthefartherweget awayfromit.

Mr.Kipling'sman"waskeptwithin boundsonlybythediscoverythatthe artoflyingwasnotconfinedtohimself."ThesewordsshouldbeveryunwelcomeintheEnglandofAlfredthe truthlover.Thesewordsshouldhe veryunwelcomeintheEnglandofthe "Truth-teller-ourEnglishDuke." ArchdeaconSmyth,inopeningthe bazaar,saiditgavehimgreatpleasure tobepresentandalsotoseethelarge andhappygatheringofyoungandold. ItistheyoungAustralianforAustralia,andnooneelsecantakehisplace. TheDeanespeciallycommentedonthe goodwillprevailingandbeconcluded hopingthatthiswouldcontinue throughoutthebazaar,leavingno roomformalice,selfishness,andany otherpettyfeeling.

TherecentMissionunder,thedirectionofFatherO'Brien,C.SS.R.,was verysuccessful.Itwasbegunduring theearlypartoflastmonthintheDardanupdistrict.Duringthefirstweek wewerefavouredwithtolerablyfine weather,andtheattendanceofthe faithfulwasallthatcouldbedesired. Therewasscarcelyasoulinthedistrict whodidnotattendtheMissionconstantly,andwhatismoreconsoling still.whodidnotreceivetheBlessed SacramentoftheAltaronceormore often.Australindwasthefieldofmissionaryactivityduringthesecond week.Herealsotheuntiringzealof FatherO'Brienwasrewardedby crowdedcongregations.Theclosing weekoftheMissioninDonnybrook, Boyanup,andArgyle,wasalsovery successful.Atthecommencementof theexercisestheweatherwasveryboisterous,andconsequentlytheattendanceVeryspasse:butasthedaysadvancedthepeoplebegantoattendbetterandtheMissionwasonthewhole asuccess.Thethanksofthewhole Catholiccommunityinthesedistricts areduetoFatherO'Brienforthegreat workdonebyhimduringthetimeof thisMission,andwemaybesurealso thatthepeoplerecognisethisandwill holdFatherO'Brieneverinkindlyremembrance.

The"ShowBall"inAhern'sBallroomonSho*night,inaidofthe FoundlingHomeAppeal,wasinevery wayapronouncedsuccess.Thearrangementsforthefunctionwerein thecapablehandsofMesdamesWilfordMitchellandWalterDwyer,who certainlyhaveeveryreasontobewell satisfiedwiththeresultoftheirefforts. Thedecorationofthelargeballroom wasaworkofart,andtoMr.Dillon.of AhernsLtd.,thethanksofthepromotersaredue.Thesupperwasperfect. Thetableswereladenwitheveryconceivabledainty,andwerebeautifully decorated.Theentirecateringwas entrustedtoAhernsLtd.,whocertainlycarriedouttheworktotheentire satisfactionofeveryone.Thegatheringenjoyedthemselves,andadelightfuleveningwasspent.

Passingtotheinteriorofthepavilion,themostnotablefeatureisthe beautifulceilings,provingtheunexcelledutilityofthefamousWunderlich ArtMetalCeiling.Thismaterialhas gainedsuchwidepopularitythatbut littlecommentuponitisnecessary hereItsdurability,itsbeautyand cleanlinessareconcededbyauthorities, whileitshighstandardofqualityhas beenmaintainedthroughoutthemany yearsithasbeenonthemarket.These ceilingsfaroutlastothermaterials. TheCatholicincrease byimmigrationforeachoftheperiods isfoundbyaddingtotheCatholic populationthesamepercentageofthe totalincreaseintheforeign-bornpopulationaswillrepresenttheproportion ofCatholicsinthecountriesfrom whichtheimmigrantscame.

Concerningcurrentallegationsof greatlossestotheChurchamongimmigrantsandtheirchildren,theArchbishopwrites:

"Insettlingthequestionofincrease andprogress,wemustbearinmind thevastnumbersofbaptisedbutuninstructedandunbelievingmenand womenwholanduponourshoresfrom countriesinwhichtheCatholicreligion issupposedtoprevail.Letusalways ask:InwhatrelationtotheCatholic Churchdidtheimmigrantsstandin theirowncountry?Whatpercentage ofthemwerereallyCatholics,aswe countCatholics,beforetheylefttheir nativeland?Wasitsixtypercent. orevenless?Why,then,shouldit besaidthattheotherfortyorfifty percent.havebeenlosttothefaith aftertheylandedonourshores?
