"Marriagemeans,"hesays,"that twopeoplehavedecidedtolivetogether.Notmerelytoresidetogether. Imeanlive.Theyhaveundertaken theconquestoftheworldtogether. Andiftheyimagineforaminutethat theworldhasgottobeconqueredfirst beforetheysetoutonthevoyage, why,theyaresimplyoffwrongatthe start."

To-daytheyarethefoundationofa wholelibraryofChristiansocialliterature.Bismarck,hisbitterenemy.paid ahightributetohimwhenhedeclaredononeoccasion:"ConsultthewritingsoftheBishopofMainz:theyare cleverlywritten,pleasanttoread,and ineveryone'shands."PipePiusIX.. shortlybeforehisdeath,acknowledged thepowerofhisliteraryworkbydeclaring,"Youwieldagoodpen,my son."PopeLeoXIII.declaredof him:"Hewasmygreatprecursorin thelabourcause."

menmurderedforhavingdaredutter anindependentword:Ihearthecry forhumanityandIseeabrutalitythat fillsmewithhorror.Oh,yes.Ibelieveinthetruthofallthosesublime ideasthatarestirringtheworldtoits depthsto-day,butthereisonlyone wavofrealisingthesesublimeidealsreturntohimWhobroughttheminto theworld,totheSonofGod,Jesus Christ.WithHimwecanwipeaway thetearsfromtheeyesofourpoorsufferingbrother.wecanestablishthe reignoflove,ofharmonyandfraternity,oftruehumanity:wecan-Isay itfromthedeepestconvictionofmy soul-wecanestablishcommunityof goodsandeverlastingpeace,andat thesametimeliveunderthefreest politicalinstitutions."

ThesuggestedcommunismofBishop Kettelerdiffersessentiallyfromthe communismofKarlMarx,whowith FriedrichEngels,hadthatyearflung totheworldthe"CommunistManifesto,"thefuture.GospelofSocialism. Marx,confusingabuseswithinherent evils,strove,underthecoverofmaterialisticevolution,tosetclassagainst classindeadlyconflict.BishopKettelercriedoutagainsttheoppression ofthepoorandtheinjusticeofthe law.Heattributedinthelargest measurethepovertyofthemassesto thegodlessnessoftheschoolsandthe usurpationoftheauthorityofthe ChurchbytheState.Guidedbyhis principles,Christianmenhaveintroducedprofoundchangesinthesocial system.

NotableamongthepracticesadvocatedbyBishopKettelerwereaChristiansystemofco-operativeproduction, thefoundationofChristianlabour unions,theprohibitionofchildlabour infactories,theseparationofsexesin theworkshops,thelegalregulationof workinghours,Sundayrestforworkingmen,closingofunsanitaryworkshops,andtheobligationofcaringfor workmentemporarilyorpermanently incapacitated.Healsospokeout againsttheemploymentofwomenand younggirlsinfactories.

HisoppositiontoSocialismdidnot iniplyacondemnationofeveryform ofStateownership.HeformallyadvocatedgovernmentownershipofrailroadsinGermany,ontheprinciple thatgovernmentownershipofcertain definiteindustriesmaybedemanded forthecommongood,providingdue compensationbemadetotheprevious owners.

Butdespitehisherculeanlaboursin thelabourarena.BishopKettelerwas bynomeansinactiveinotherfields. Hisinfluencewasfeltinvariousdoctrinalcontroversies. The"school" whichKettelerestablishedatMainz wasnotedforitsadherencetoscholastictheologyandhostilitytotheantiRomantendenciesof"Germanscience." Althoughhedeclaredhehadalways believedinPapalInfallibility,hefearedthatitsdeclarationwouldresultin aPapal-absolutismandcentralisation, andaskedwhetherthetheological proofsputforwardsufficedtojustify itsdogmaticdefinition.Hewasnot presentatthefinalvote,butleftRome afterawrittendeclarationthathe submittedbeforehandtothedecision oftheCouncil.

Hisfirstgreatsocialutterancewas in1848.when,aspastorofTopsten andarepresentativetotheFrankfort Parliament,hespokeatthegraveof twodeputieswhohadbeenbrutally murderedbyamobfortheirfree'publicutterances. Heexoneratedthe greatbodyoftheGermanpeoplefrom responsibilityforthecrime. 'Longfellowsexternallife"(writes Thos.Davidson,intheEncyclopedia Brittanica") theiue01amodest, oeepheartedgentieman,whosehighest amuitionwasCObeaperfectman,and throughsympathyandlove,tohelp otherstobethesame.kitsboyhood wasspentmostlyinhisnativePortlandtinthestateofMaine),whose beautitulsurroundingsandquiet,pure lifehehasdescrimainhispoem"My LostYouth!'Attheviolentremoval bytheBritishGovernmentofacolony ofFrenchsettlersfromAcadia(Nova Scotia),in1755,ayoungcouple,GabnelandEvangeline,ontheveryday oftheirwedding,,getseparatedand carriedindifferentdirections,sothat theylostalltraceofeachother. Slightasthestoryis,itisworkedout intooneofthemostaffectingpoems inthelanguage,andgivestoliteralure oneofitsmostperfecttypesofwodianhood,andof'affectionthathopesand enduresandispatient.'ThoughwritteninametredeemedforeigntoEnglishears,thepoemattainedawide popularitywhichithasneverlost. Longfellowwasalmostperfect.A maninintellectandcourage,yet withoutconceitorbravado;awoman insensibilityandtenderness,yetwithoutshrinkingorweakness;asaintin purityoflifeanddevotionofheart;a knighterrantinhatredofwrongand contemptofbaseness,yetwithoutselfrighteousnessorcynicism;aprincein dignityandcourtesy.yetwithoutformalityorcondescension;apoetin thoughtandfeeling,yetwithoutjealousyoraffectation;ascholarintastes andhabits,yetwithoutaloofnessor bookishness;adutifulson,aloving husband,ajudiciousfather,atrusty friend,ausefulcitizen,andanenthusiasticpatriot-heunitedinhisstrong transparenthumanityalmostevery virtueunderheaven.Hiswholelife wasbathedinthatsympathy,thatlove whichsufferslongandenviesnot.No maneverlivedmorecompletelyinthe lightthanHenryWadsworthLongfellow."Thisbeautifulsympathetic naturesowelldescribedbyhisbiographer,foundafittingthemeinthat "Exilewithoutanend,andwithoutan equalinhistory," towhichtheFrenchAcadianCatholic peasantrywerecondemned168years ago,whentheyweretornfromtheir happyhomesanddeposited,asunwelcomerefugees,inthethenBritishcolonies,fromMassachussetstoGeorgia andLouisianaontheMexicanGulf. IntheabsenceofanyreliableliteraturewhichwouldexplainLongfellow's motive,thewriteroftheselinescan merelyhazardtwotheories.Inthe firstplacethepoet'sfinaleisthemore artisticclimax-andwhocanblame himifhedecidedtotakeoutaspecial poeticlicenceinthisparticularcase? Poetshaveprivilegeswhichthemere chroncilerofeventscannotverywell claim.Inthesecondplaceitwould appearprobablethathewishedtopay averyspecialcomplimenttotheconsecratedSisterhoodsoftheCatholic Church.In"Evangeline"hehasgivenusatypeofdevoted,pure,unselfishCatholicmaidenhood,whichwill surviveaslongasloveofvirtueexists andtheEnglishlanguageisspoken.To putthefinishingtouchesonthatexceedinglybeautifulcharactersketch hecouldthinkofnomoreappropriate devicethantonumberheramongthe EarthlySpousesoftheHeavenly Bridegroom.Andthisishowhe doesit:-

sharersintheEmpire'sdestiny,shouldhaveavoice-inforeignaftairsand imperialdefence.ButagainstthatopinionMr.Charltonputsforwardthe objectionfromtheLabourstandpointthatanimportantsectionofthe i_orninonwealth-organisedLabour-willhavenothingtodowithforeignaffairsunlessmeanttobringaboutworldpeace.AlreadythisCommonwealth committedtohugeresponsibilitiesinconnectionwiththelastwar,and participationintheEmpire'sforeignpolicywouldmeanthatAustraliawould hecommittedtotakehershareoftheresponsibilitiesattachedtotheprosecutionofanywarinwhichtheEmpirewasengaged.Itmaysoundvery grandandbigtosaythatwehaveavoiceinelseEmpire'sforeignaffairs,but reallyourvoicewouldhavelittleinfluenceindirectingImperialopinionin London,andfortheprivilegeofbeingallowedtohaveouruninfluential say-so.wewouldhavetopayaveryhighprice.Sixtythousandofthe flowerofourfivemillionslaiddowntheirlivesasasacrificetodefendthe Empireandmakefuturewarsimposible,andwearestilltalkingwar. TheEmpire'sforeignaffairsaremanagedinLondon,havealwaysbeen,and willalwaysbe,untiltheDominionsaresopopulousthattheirvoicewillhave someinfluenceindirectingforeignaffairs.Toencouragethenotionthat Mr.Bruce.asthespokesmanoffivemillionsinthiscountry,canswayImperialpublicopinioninLondon,istoattributetohimspecialandsuperlative gifts.Hewillfindhimselffeted,petted,mademuchof,buthewillalsofind thegreatbodyofBritishConservativesentimentisnotdisposedtobeledby Mr.BruceshouldMr.Brucechosetobethecandidfriendadvising.contrary toConservativeImperialideals.Britain'sforeignpolicyhasbeenthesubjectofmuchcommentoflate.SincethefalloftheCoalitionGovernment. andpracticallythepoliticalostracismofsomeofthehighpriestsof'raper ialism,therehasbeenconsiderablespeculationonwhattheConservatives underMr.Baldwinwoulddo.ButMr.Baldwinseemstobeindecisive, andinternallyBritishaffairsarenobetterthantheywerebeforehisadvent topower.Indeedtheyseemtobegrowingworse.TheproblemofunemploymentgrowsmoreacuteandBritain'sforeignaffairsarefarfromsatisfactory.LordCurzon's"expose"wearetoldwasexaminedbythedelegates.butwhatthisimportantdocument-hasrevealed,we,thecommonpeople,willnotbeprivilegedtoknowmorethanLordCurzonandtheConference,whichwillbeguidedbyLordCurzon,willwantustoknow.Mr. Baldwin.thehopeoftheConservatives,was,itisstated,inthebattlefor publicity,thedoughtychampionforsecrecy.\Vemustnotexpecttoo muchtheninthewayofpublicinformationforthecommonpeopleofthe DominionsfromtheImperialConference.Wecanbesurethatasimilar lineofpublicitywillbefollowedasatGenevaandLausanne-we'llgetthe barehones,themeatwillbepottedintheImperialarchives-andsomeday anex-PrimeMinister,withanitchforscribbling,willfindthepottedmeat very-usefulinthepreparationofexclusivearticlesforthepressat£1,500per 1,000words.Itisreasonabletobesilentinmattersthatifknownwouldbe helpfultotheEmpire'senemiesinthwartingherinterests,butwithinthe Empire,wherethereis,orshouldbe,unity,co-operationandsolidarity,what isthereinBritishpolicythatmaynotbepublished?TheouterDominions,Mr.Brucesays,desiredthefullestpossiblepublicityconcerningImperialandforeignpolitics,andafreeexchangeofopinionswasimportant. slutsofartheinformationgivenissothinandpaltryonewouldthinkawartimecensorshipofnewswasestablishedandtheouterDominionsatleastare tobekeptinthedark.Ithasbeenunanimouslydecided'inConferencethat thediscussiononthequestionofforeignrelations,inwhichMr.Brucetook part,wastobetreatedasconfidential.Anatmosphereofsecrecy,apress reportstates,meetsinquirerseverywhere,andthereismuchcommentin Dominioncircles.ApparentlySirJosephCook's100knightsofthepen arefindingtheatmosphereoftheImperialConferencetoomurkyforpenetration.Conjecture,however,candomuchandtheinfluenceofthepress maycompeltheConferencetobreakdownthewallsofsecrecytosomeconsiderableextent,otherwisewemayhopeforlittlethatisworthwhilein thewayofinformationfromtheConference.Wemayacceptascorrect thattherehadbeenstraighttalkandfreecriticismfromtheDominionrepresentativesonLordCurzon'sspeechonforeignpolicy,andunit,-theDominions'representativesallowthemselvestobechloroformedbyLordCurzonandhiscolleaguesintheConference,somethingeffectivemayemanate fromtheircriticismthatwillsteertheImperialbarqueintosafewaters,and unitetheFreeStatesoftheEmpirebyevenmorestrongerlinksthannow. Fathero'NeillrecalledhisfirstmeetingMr.Stainthorpe,shortlyafterthe `taru,theSeaChurchwascompleted, thenanorganistwasneeded,andhe (FatherO'Neill)gladlyacceptedthe servicesofMr.Stainthorpe.Thatwas somenineteenyearsago,andsince then,almostwithoutabreak,Mr. Stainthorpe'sservicesweregivento thechoir.AfewyearslaterhesucceededthelateMr.Bahen(R.I.P.)as secretarytotheparish.Asorganist andsecretary,andinanyworkheundertooktodo,hewasunaffectedby selfishnessandpettiness,anddidhis workasbecameanhonourableandconscientiousman.FatherO'NeillreferredalsotothekindlyservicesMr. StainthorperenderedthePresentation Convent.aschairmanoftheAnnual BallCommittee,andinmanyother ways.TheNunswerelosingagood friend.

TheRev.FatherLyonssaidagood manwasleavingus,buthefeltsure thatitwouldonlybeforaveryshort timethatMr.Stainthotpewouldbe absent.

Mr.W.Watson,thoughanon-Catholic,justlyclaimedtoknowcomparativelymorethanmanyCatholicmen abouttheself-denyingandungrudging workdonebyMr.Stainthorpeonbe. halfoftheChurchandthePresentationNuns.Hefeltitagreatpleasureandanhonourtobegivenanopportunitytopayatributetoavery oldfriend.

Mr.H.Briggssaidhepreferredto bebrief,eventhoughhisinclination wouldcarryhimtheotherway:that nowordsofhiscouldevennearlyconveyhisdeepregardforMr.Stainthorpe,thanwhomnomancouldwish forabetterfriend;heheartilyconcueredwithallthathadbeensaidby previousspeakers.

Mr.Caseyfollowedonthelinesof thepreviousspeakers.Hiswasa cheeryeulogisticspeechseasonedwith appropriatehumour.

Mr.T.Ahernspokebriefly,quiteto thepoint.supportingeverytribute paidthedepartinggentleman.-

Mr.T.Kenniwell,inaracyspeech, excitedmuchhumour.Asonewho knowsSunbury,heassuredMr.Stainthorpe bright,everythingtherewasmerryand andthathere,"hisbetterhalf." Mrs.Stainthorpe,neednotworry abouthim.

Inresponse,Mr.Stainthorpe,onhis ownandhiswife'sbehalf,thanked verysincerelyFathersO'Neilland Lyons,andthepeoplefortheirvery finepresentationandentertainment. However,hadhegotwindoftheirintentionsearlier-itwasallsosudden, thathewasinaquandaryastowhat heshouldsay-heshouldhavespirited himselfaway.Asforsuchahandsomepresentation.whilstheappreciat- editverymuch,hereallywishedthat ithadnotbeenmade.Rather,he. wished,thoughhedidnotfeelhedeserved,butonethousandethpartof whathadbeensaidabouthimthat evening.Frankly,heexpressedthe beliefthatanythinghehaddoneeither fortheChurchortheNunswasno morethanthedutyofanyCatholic. Hehadgivenhisservicesungrudging/v,andwaspreparedtodosoagain. Fornomanhadhethesamerespect asforFatherO'Neill,whowasindeeda genuinefriend.Hehopedthatthe standardandsuccessoftheannualball inaidofthePresentationNuns,for whomhewoulddoevenmorehen fortheChurch.wouldbemaintained. Inconclusion,Mr.Stainthorpesaidbe regrettedverymuchhavingtoleavehishomeandoldfriends:hewashope- ful.however,ofbeingabletovisitthemoccasionally,ifnotofresuming hisresidenceamongstthem.Though naturallyafewdidnotagreewithhim, hefeltongoingawaythathewasleav ingmanyfriendsandnoenemies.
