Scenesofremarkableenthusiasm, saysthe"IrishWeeklyIndependent," ofthe18th.Aug.,wereassociatedwith thehugedemonstrationinCollege Green,Dublin,onSunday.

Afeatureofthe'demonstrationwas thewarmthofthewelcomeextended tothePresidentonhisfirstpublicaddressinthecapital.

Uptothetimetheproceedingscommencedthecrowdwasquiteorderly. .andtherewaslittletosuggestoppositionofthecharacterthatafterwards manifesteditself.When,however, themeetingopenedtherewasatern&outburstofyellingandderisive cheeringonthepartofalargebody ofwomenandyounggirlsandsome youngmenwhohadassembledinthe centreofthecrowdoppositetheplatform.

Theopeningremarksofthechairman(SenatorMrs.WysePower)were quitedrownedinthedin,andMr.Sean Milroy,whosucceededher,hadtorun thegauntletofaperfectstormofinterruptions. -

Womenshriekedthemselveshoarse inanendeavourtoshoutdownthe speaker,buthekeptonhisfeet,and succeededindeliveringquitealengthy address.

Theinterruptersweregraduallyforcedouttotheedgeofthecrowd,and subsequentspeakerswereheardwith comparative,clearnestnotwithstandingacontinualbabelfromthedemonstrators,whogroaned,cheeredand sangalternately.

ThePresidentLashesOut.

PresidentCosgrave,whowasreceivedwithagreatoutburstofcheering. saidhehadseenamongsttheaudience awomancarryingabannerdemanding justiceonbehaltofmotherswhose peoplehadbeenshot.Thatbanner wascarriedbyawomanwl*)seson badnotbeenshot,andwhenherhusbandwasshotingaolshewasnot there(Cheersandinterruption).

Ofallthefraudulentmovementsthat everexistedthemostfraudulentmovementledbyherbeatthemall(Cheers andinterruptions,

ThePresident.addressingoneofthe interrupters,askedwhereMadame MacBridewaswhenheandthelate MajorMacBridewereingaolinKilmainham andfurtherintes uptions).Ayoungladyaskedaquestionwhichcouldnotbeheardonthe. platform,andthePresidentreplied: "Don'ttalktomeaboutthatsortof thing.Whatismore,herdaughteror hernieceIgotreleasedoutofgaol andtheresheisnow"(pointingtoa womaninthecrowd).

Dealingwiththeinterruptersonthe outskirtsofthegathering,President Corgravesaidtheyhadbeentoldthat over500,000menweretohavedied recentlyfortherepublic.Wasthat thecase?(Interruptions).Hewas theretoappealforanationalgovernment.agovernmentthatknewnosectionsandonethatwoulddealfairly withallsections.

Atthisstage,MadameGonneMac. Bridemadesomeinterruption,andthe President,addressingher,said:-Did youdropyourhusband'snameunt-1 be.died?"(Cheers).

"Irefused,"saidthePresident, goonplatformswiththatwoman,and oneofhertribesaidtomethatthe bestthingMajorMacBridecouldhave donewastodie."(Applauseandfurtherinterruptions).

Continuing,PresidentCosgravesaid theregisterwasreadyfortheelections.Acertainsectionofthecommunitywasappealingtothepeople againstthem,andifthepeoplewere notpreparedtoelectthem,theywere preparedtogetout.

TheFlagofFreedom.

"Ican,"saidthePresident,inan emphaticvoice,"sweartoyouthis. thatIornoothermanonthisplatformwilleverdrawagunagainstthe willofthepeople,andIassureyouwe neverdid.Weonlydrewthemto freeourcountry,andwedrewthem fortheflagthere(pointingtotheTricolour)(Applause).

Thatflagmeantfreedomtotheplain peopleofthecountry,andtoevery orderinthecommunity.

Dealingwiththe£500,000whichwas inAmerica,andwhichwasbeingclaimedbyMr.deValeraandhisassociates, PresidentCosgravesaidtheyhadno morerighttoitthantothe£200,000 whichtheyhadseisedoutofthebanks twelvemonthsbefore.(Interruptions). Heaskedifanyofthosepresentstood forrobbery.Applause).

Heorthoseassociatedwithhimhad nevergonetoanymeetingtointerruptit,theystoodforfreespeech,

theystoodfurconstructionandnot fordestruction(Applause).Theother sidehadsaidtheystoodfor;Ilithat wasgood,butonewasappalledat whatbadtakenplace.

Owingtotheirpolicynotonlyhad theirinstitutionsbeenburneddown, butpricelessmanuscriptsthatwould haveprovedtheircultureandwhich wouldhavebeenofincalculablebenefittotheirchildrenhadbeendestroyedbythosewhostoodforRepublicanism(Cheersandinterruptions).

AmidstcheersthePresidentasked whereweretheinterrupterswhenthe fightforfreedomwason(Voices:"In thefeathers,"and."withtheBlack-andTans").HerememberedthelateGeneralCollinsduringtheTreatydebates intheUniversityCollegepointingout amanwhowaswavingadrapedbannerasonewho.whenthetroublewas onwiththeBlack-and-Tans.refusedto takealetteracrossthecityasitwas toorisky(Cheers).Thatwasasampleofwhattheyhadbeforethem.

TheTragedyofSeanHales.

Answeringfurtherinterruptions,the Presidentsaidoutsideacoupleof familiesinthecountrytherewerefew whosufferedasmuchashismother did,andshenevertradedonthesacrificesshemadetopatriotism.

Nopersonhadbeenexecutedwho didnotgetduenotice.Addressing anumberofinterrupters,thePresident said:"Didyougiveusduenotice,did yougiveSeanHalesduenotice,orthe others?"(Cheers).

"Doyoustandfortheshootingof SeanHales?"heaskedanotherinterrupter,whoshamefacedlysaidhedid not.

Severalotherinterruptersaskedby thePresidentwhattheyhadever doneforaRepublic,saidtheyhadvotedforit."And."saidthePresident. "thesearethepeoplewhoaredoing thepatriotsnow."

Proceeding.PresidentCosgravesaid theywouldhaveanumberofirregulars standingatthecomingelection,but thepeoplewouldhaveintheelection buttwogreatissues-chaos,ororder andthepeople'swill.Theyhadenough ofchaosforthepast12months:what theywantednowwasstabilityandorder,aGovernmentthatwouldbethe antithesisofwhattheyhadknown Governmentstobefortenorfifteen generations.

ItwasnotEngland'smightnorEnglishsoldiersforthepastsevencenturiesthathadbeatenthem-itwas disunionamongstthemselves(cheers), anddisunionshouldbestampedoutso thattheyshouldpresentonesolid phalanxofnationalsecurityofpeace andstability(Loudcheers).

WhatPears*Saidin1912.

GeneralMulcahy,whowasreceived withloudapplause,saidthatthepeopleofDublinshowedbytheirsolid, compactenthusiasmthattheywere preparedtodotheirwork,andthat thefewwhohadcometheretotryto destroytheir(workbytheirclamour didnotupsetthem.Whiletheycame theretoassociateenthusiasticallytigey hadtodotheworkathomejustas Pearse,ConnollyandMcDonaghhad togointothequietcellfacinginthe morningtheirexecution,butwiththe proudspiritcifconfidenceintheir workdone.

Ashadbeensaidinthe"SundayIndependent"thatmorning,andashad beensaidinthemorningpapersa coupleofmorningsago,peoplewould cometothemandtell,themtheyhad desertedtheirgodsanddesertedtheir leaders,andthattheyhadleftaside themenwhohadthetruekidsfor Irelandandwhodidtheirtruework forIreland.Theywouldbetoldthey haddesertedWolfeTone,andPearse andothers.ButiftheyreadPearse. andiftheyreadTerenceMacSwiney. theywouldseewhattheyhadtosay. andwhattheythoughtshouldbedone inIreland.Thepeoplewhospoke aboutTonehadmadeaslipasregardsthemeansheproposedtoadopt TheGospelofTone,

Whatevidencewastherethatthere wasanacceptanceonthesideofDe Valeraandhisfollowers(groansand hisses),thattheywouldacceptTone's meanstobringIrelandtohertrue greatness.

WasthekillingofMichaelCollinsan evidencethattheyweretryingtocover upthedissentionsofthepastamongst thevariousdivisionsinIreland?

AnothermeansofTonewastosot,- stitutethenameofIrishmanforthat ofProtestant.Catholic,ordissenter. DidDeValera'sfollowers.bygrabbing landinCo.Cork.Tipperary,andMayo,andusingtheBelfastboycottasa

coyertohunttheProtestantsoutof Ireland.showthattheyweretaking themeansofTone?

PowerlessParliament.

Pearsewasquotedbythemasbeing outforthesovereigntyofIreland. "Justasitwe,"saidGeneralMulcahy, "hayenotworkednightanddayfor, andhavebeforeustoday,theidealof PearseandMeagher,whosays:"The Irishpeopleareouttoraiseinthis countryanationasfreeasanynationthathasashipontheseasorthat hasaSenatetoguarditsland."He rememberedPearse,in1912,takinghis placeontheplatforminO'Connell Street,withtheIrishParliamentary Patty,althoughhedifferedwiththem, whenthatpartywereurgingthepeopletoacceptaHomeRuleBill.

NamethensaidthattheGaelwho wouldrefusetheBillthenbeforethe BritishParliamentwouldputbackhis ownadvantageandputbackunnecessarilytheadvantageofthecountry.

TriumphofDemocracy.

Mr.KevinO'Higgins.whowasenthusiasticallycheered,referredtothe "littlenoisyrabble,thelittlecrowdof ignorantlootersandwreckersand burners."'whowereshoutingabouta Republic,forwhichtheyneverlostan hour'ssleep.Theprisoners,hecontinued,weretheprisonersofthepeople,andwhenthepeoplewantedit theywouldbeletoutofprison.An immediateandindiscriminaterelease nowwouldbeabadday'sworkforthe Irishpeople(Cheers).

AVoice:Thatistheopinionofall thepeople(Cheers).

Continuing,Mr.O'Higginssaidthere isnofutureforIrelandinthekindof littlenoisyrabblethatyousawhere to-clay(Hear,heart.Butthereis afutureforherinthegoodsenseand decencyofthegreatmassofhercitizens,andjustastherewasenough manhoodinthiscrowdto-daytosweep awaytotheoutskirtsofthecrowd thatlittleignorant,noisyrabble,so thereisenoughgoodsenseanddecencyintheIrishnationtosilence thosewho sovereigntyhavebeenchallengingthe throughlastyear.

CrossingtheStream.

JudgeCohalan,U.S.g.,whomSenatorMcLoughlindescribe.'as"theman whofirstdiscovereddeValera,"said hewasnotabitproudofdeValera. TheymightbeexpertsinrepublicanisminAmerica,becausetheyhadbeen atitforalongtimeandhadarest republicthere.Theyhadseenmany riseandfallandhe,asaconvinced republicancametothatvastgathering inordertorepudiatetheactionsof thosetherewhotalkedofbeingrepublicans.

Ifwhathesawtherewarasampleof theirrepublicansimhe,asanindividual whoforagenerationinAmericadid whathecouldtoadvancethecauseof theIrishrace,welcomedtheFreeState asalongsteptowardarepublic.They, inAmerica,werenotsatisfiedthatthe FreeStatewasanend,butlookedat theFreeStateasalongstepforward.

"Wehavebeendisappointed,"he said,"inAmericainmanywaysat someefthethingsdoneinIreland.We havebeenshockedasRepublicansand loversofliberty-25millionofus Irishblood-atthethingsthathave beengoingoninthenameofliberty butwehavebeengratifiedthatinthe contestbetweenlawandorderonthe onesideandchaosontheotherside, thatlawandorderseemsfinallyto havewon(Applause)

"Wesaytoyouthatgreatasthe blowthatbefellthenationwhen ArthurGriffithandMichaelCollins diedthatthemenwhohavetakenup theirworkmustbemenofcharacter, capacity,andpolicywhentheysucceededinbringingorderoutofchaos.

"Thesemenwhohavetakenupthe workonbehalfoflawandorderare menofdemonstratedcapacity,courage.andcharacter.Returnthemto powerandputtheminapositionto completetheworktheyhavemagni- ficentlybegun,andinafewyearswe willbeabletoreturnhereandfind thatyouwillnotonlyhavemade-as youhavealreadymadeinthisFree State-awonderfulstepforward,but Youwillhavegonethewholewayand reachedapointwheretherealthing,andnotamockrepublic,willbees- tablishedontheseshores."

Mr.Davies.inthecourseofhisaddress,saidthatintheahistoryofthe Iritishpeopletherehadbeentwo SaxoninvasionsThefirsttookaway fromtheWelshpeopletheircountry. Thesecondtookawaytheirreligion.

TheWelshpeoplewereneveropposedtoRome.Fromthetimeof Gildas,fromthetimeofHowelDda, whowenttoRometogetthePopeto confirmhistriballaws;fromthetime ofGiraldusCambrensis,whotravelled timeaftertimetoRometofight,not againstthePope,butagainstCanterbury;fromthetimeofLlewellynthe Great,whoappealedtothePope. againsttheKingofEngland.Wales hadneverbeenagainstRome.

GoldenAgeofWales.

Onthecontrary,Walesknewthat thegoldenageofherhistorywasthe longperiodwhenshewasincommunionwithRome.Nosmallshareof thegreatworkofplantingorconfirmingtheCatholicreliigoninIrelandand BrittanywasduetotheschoolofSt. IlltydandthelaboursofSt.David. IntheSixthcenturyWaleswasfamousnotonlyforitsmissionariesand saints,butalsoforitspoets.The CatholicChurchinWaleswasofthe sametypeaselsewhereintheWest initsteaching,itspractice,itsorganisation.itshierarchy.

InGildas'timethecountrywasfull ofmonasteries.whichweregreatand vigorousschoolsofCatholicdevotion andlearning.FromLlantwit-major andCaerleoninthesouthtoBangor inthenorth.thatportionofBritain, withitslongrollofSaintsandChristianmissionaries,SS.'Dubritius,Teilo, David,Gildas,Cadoc.Paulinus.anda

hostofothers,wasoneofthebrightest jewelsinthecrownoftheCatholic Church,asitcontinuedtoberight' throughtheMiddleAges.

Inthe"LawsofWales"drawnupby theWelshPrince,calledHowelthe Good,everydoctrine,everypractice associatedwiththenormallifeofa Catholiccommunityweretobefound infullworkingorder.Theauthority ofthePopewasclearlyassumedand clearlyexpressed. ItwastheWelshcustomtoconsecrateBishopsontheFestivalofSt. Peter'sChair.Therewasnoquestion aboutthepositionoccupiedbythe RomanPontiffintheAncientLawsof Wales.

UnimpeachableTestimony.

Someyearsagoitwassaidsoma verycourageousplatformoratorcornmittedhimselftothestatementthat St.PatrickwasaProtestant.History doesnotrecordwhathappenedtothat braveman.Butitiseasiertocall St.PatrickaProtestantthantodeny thatHowelDdaandhisWelshtribesmenwereCatholicsunitedtotheSee ofPeter.

Themonasticsystemwas,ofcourse, anorganicpartoftheecclesiastical order:infact,theWelshwordfor"religion"(crefycic1)meantamonastic order.

IftheWelshpeopleinthetimeof HowelDdaweresuchdevoutCatholicsit'wasnothumanlypossiblefor suchavigorousCatholictraditionto haveestablisheditselfintheirnational lifeandtheirsocialinstitutionswithoutalongandwell-testedexperience.

ThetestimonyoftheWelshLaws seemedtopointoutthattheCatbobe traditionhadbeenestablishedamong theWelshpeoplefromadistantpast. Itwasimpossiblenottofeelthatthe traditionsoftheCatholicChurchhad never,reallybeneaththesurface,ceasedtobeadeterminingfactorinthe lifeofthenation.

WhetherasWelshmentheytookan interestinhersecularhistory,orinher spiritualtraditions,orinherancient literatureorinherancientruins. wherevertheyturned,theywould comeacrossirestigesofaWelshcivilisationwhichhadsprungoutofthe heartofCatholicism.

Thatfabricwasdestroyedinthesixteenthcentury,butitsfoundationshad beenlaidafreshinthat,theirnative land,and,likethetempleofold,it mightbeafterallthatthegloryof thatsecondhouse,risingsilentlystone uponstone,mightbemoremagnifi centeventhanthegloryofthefirst.

Itwasconsideredbymanythat whentheVictorianHierarchyhaddecidedtoestablishaseparateprovincialseminaryforl'ictoria,theoldercollegesofManlyandSpringwoodwould offermorethanampleprovisionfor thepriestlyvocationsofNewSouth WalesandQueensland.Butitisan inspiringevidenceoftheconstantly-increasingnumberofaspirantstothe sanctuaryinAustraliathatinthevery yearinwhichWerribeeopenedits doorstotheyouthofVictoriaand SouthAustralia,St.Columba'sCollegeatSpringwoodcommencedthe scholasticyearwitharecordnumber ofnewstudents.Atthebeginningof thepresentyear36newstudentsenteredSpringwood.andtheaccommodationprovidedbytheexistingbuildingwasbarelysufficienttohousethe finebodyof,younglevitesinresidence.

HisGracetheArchbishop,withhis characteristicpastoralforesight,apprehensivelestnextyearprospectivestudentsshouldknockatthedoorsofSt. eoltunba'sandbeturnedawayforlack ofaccommodation,hasdecidedtoproceedwiththecompletionoftheseminary.Thefoundation-stoneofthe presentcollegewaslaidbyhisEminenceontheFeastoftheEpiphany, 1909,andonMarch1,1910,St.Columba'sbeganitsworkfortheAustralian priesthoodwithlessthan20youngstudents.Duringthe13yearsofits workundertherectorshipofVeryRev. Dr.Cregan,nofewerthan350studentshavepassedthroughthecourses ofpreparatorystudiestopursuetheir higherecclesiasticalstudiesatManly orintheRomanCollege,andabout 130ofitsalumnihavebeenraisedto thedignityofthepriesthood.Dur-

ingthatperiodSt.Columba'shasbeen performinginfact,thoughnotinlaw, theworkofanationalpreparatory seminaryforAustralia,itsstudents hailingfromthefourcornersofour continent.Withthegrowthofthe Churchandthemultiplicationofseminaries,Catholicswillrejoicetoknow thattheincreaseofvocationshasbeen soconsistentthatithasbecomeimperativetopushonimmediatelywith thecompletionoftheoriginaldesign ofSt.Columba's.Asleftbyhis Eminence,Springwoodseminarywas designedtoaccommodateabout50 students,anditwasconsideredatthe timethatsuchprovisionwouldbeampleformanyyearstorelieNTthepressureofovercrowdingatManly.But thereisalreadyurgentneedforfurtherexpansion,andhisGracehasunhesitatinglyundertakentoprovidefor atleast100studentsatSpringwood. Theworkhasalreadybeencommenced,andistobecarriedoutinstone, toharmonisewiththepresentedifice. Theadditionswillprovideforafile chapel.84feetinlength,accommodationforsixprofessors,andthespiritualdirector,anddormitoryspacefor fiftyextrastudents.withallnecessary adjuncts.

ThosewholabourfortheTrueFaith inheathenlands,forsakingthecomparativecomfortofworkamongtheir ownpeople,areoftenfacedwithsituationsofextremeperil,saysthe"CatholicHerald."

Nothingmoreexcitinghasbeenwritteninfictionthanthenarrativeofthe intenselydramaticswoopoftheChinesedesperadoesuponalittlegarrison of120.andtheresourcefulnesswhich wonthetwoIrishprieststheirescape fromdeath.Theywereatthetime oftheattacktheonlyforeignersinthe town.

TireandPillage.

Thebandits'suddenonslaughtwas asunexpectedasitwasterrible.The LondonMissionHospitalwasburnt down,theforeignquarterswerethen puttotheflames,alsotheCatholic Church.Thiswasfollowedbyanorgy oflooting.Thecaptivestakennumber200,andtwo-thirdsofthehousesin thetownhavebeentotallyburntout. Luckily,itwasdarkwhentheattack

onthetowncommenced,andFathers McHughandWardfaced,ascanbe readilyimagined,withdeathortorture,wereforatimeinthegreatest peril.

AStrokeofGenius.

Thenbyoneofthosestrokesof geniuswhichhasoftenmadeallthe difference'twixtsuccessanddisasterandinthiscase'twixtlifeanddeathChineseclotheswerehurriedlysearchedfor andanddonnedbythetwopriests, arushmadeforanearbynative dwelling.

Inthegeneralexcitementandterror causedbythebandits'fiendishworkin thetown,theFeathers'hidingplacewas passedby,andalthoughtheruffians succeededindraggingawaytocaptiv itytheunfortunateChinesedoctpiat tachedtotheLondonMission(to- getherwithothersofthestaff),the twopriestssuccessfullyeludedtheir pursuers.TheRev.Mr.Olney,oftheLondon Mission,hadalreadyescapedandmade hiswaytoHankow,wherelaterhewas joinedbyFathersMcHughandWard. IrishWitv.OrientalCunning.

Theydeclaredinaninterviewthat thebanditshaddiscoveredaftersome timewhereFatherWardhadtakenrefuge,andthereuponsetfiretoSungho.

However,bythen,hehadmanagedtoeludethemagain.Followingthe burningofthetown,thebanditsreturnedtoTsaothih,wheretheydemandedFatherMcHugh.Butinthe meantimehe,too,hadescapedby crossingtheriver,usingadoorasa raft.Thelocalgarrison,numbering 12Q,losteightmenkilledinthefighting.Theremainder,underanofficer, marchedoutofthetown.

OnFriday,September28,theLiter. cry-andDebatingCircleentertained membersoftheclubwithanevening devotedwhollytothelivesandworks ofAustralianpoetsandauthors.NamesdeartotheheartofloversofAustralianliteratureweresprinkledthrough thespeeches.Nameswhichbrought backsweetrecollectionsoftheworkof "ourown,ournativeland'sbards."

AdamLindsayGordon,themost strikingandinsomerespectsthemost typicalofAustralianpoets,wasthe happychoiceofMr.H.McDonald,who followedtheromanticcareerofthat wellknownbardfromhisbirthinthe AcoresIslandstohistragicendon BrightonBeach.Thelifeofthepoet astrooper.horse-breaker,landowner, steeplechaserider,politician,livery stablekeeperandpoetwasentertainingly.told.Therecklesspersonality ofthemanwhowrote: "Nogamewaseverwortharap Forrationalmantoplay, Intowhichnoaccident,nomishap,Couldpossiblyfindaway,"4 appealsstronglytorealAustralians whoinstantlyrespondtothebeauty ofhismanlylines.Thespeakerdealt withGordon'slifeinParliament,where thepoliticalimportanceofthepoet's speecheswasmarredbyhisfailingfor ancienthistory,Greekmythologyand longquotationsinLatinverse,which werehardlynecessarywhenthesub- jectofParliamentarydiscussionwas perhapsthenewbridgeacrossSeldomseenCreek.Thepoet'stragiclater dayswassympatheticallytreatedby thespeaker,whoquotedinillustration ofhislastrestingplaceatBrighton, Gordon'swell-knownrequest: "Letmeslumberinthehollow, Wherethewattleblossomswave,Withneverstoneorrailtofencemy bed.

Thenextspeaker,Mr.RegKeating, tookforhisdiscoursetheeverpopular HenryLawson,andquotedfreelyfrom thatrealAustralian'swork.Thespeakertreatedhisfinesubjectinamanner whichwouldhavedelightedthelovers of"WhiletheBillyBoils,"Inthe DaysWhentheWorldWasWide,"and "WhenIWasKing."Mr.Keating gavehisaudienceafewsamplesof Henry'svirileverse.

Mr.Flynnthenfollowedwithacon- tributiononAustralianliteratureina generalway.HetravelledfromChas. Harpur,ourearliestnative-bornpoet.rightuptorecentlydeceasedHenry Lawson.Thisspeakerthoughtthat intheabsenceofalltheglamourof "thedayswhenKnightswerebold,"of whichthepoetryoftheoldercountries hasmuchtodo,thatAustraliawas notquiteanidealpoet'scountry,but onejudgedfromMr.Flynn'sremarks thathewasnotoftheopinionthatas abreedingplaceforpoetryAustralia wasan"alsoran."

Mr.T.Whitelyfollowedwithacom- prehensiveresumeofAustralianliteratureasawhole,andalsoinitsrelation toEnglishliterature.Thespeaker entertainedhisaudiencewithaptcom- parisonsofforemostAustralianand Englishpoets.Amongmanyothers thisspeakertoucheduponwereA.L.G.,"Banjo"Paterson.HenryLawson, Kendall.Quinn,Boake,andDorothea MacKellar,whosebeautifulpoem"My Country."thespeakerfeelinglyrecit- ed.Mr.Whitely'scontributionwas

neatlyillustratedbymanyquotations, alaiinsspeechwasafineexpositionof adeepknowledgeandakeenappreciation. the1'icturianpoet.JohnFarrell,was vets,siellhandledbyMr.R.Fennell, whogaveanappreciationofthat bard'slife,socialworkandpoetry.The poetwas,accordingtothespeaker,one ofthemostpromisingofhisday,but sawhisdutyinthepresentationofan economicpolicywhichFarrellbelieved wouldsolvethesocialillsofthecountry.StrikingpassagesfromthevigorousworkofthisAustralianlitterateurwassympatheticallyrenderedby thespeaker.

TheRev.FatherSmith.whoactedas chairman,contributedsomegeneral remarksonliterature,andgavesome entertainingreminiscencesofoneof Queensland'spoets.GeorgeEssex Evans,whosecountrynearToowoombatheRev.Fatherisfamiliarwith.

TheCircleistobecongratulatedon thesuccessofthewholeentertainment,anditishopedthatsimilarfixtureswillfindaplaceintheclub's syllabus. TheElocutionClass'Concertwas heldonMondaynight,October1,and the300patronsweredelightedwitha fineprogrammewellcarriedout.This entertainmentwillbemorefullyreportedinnextissue.

Theusualweeklydancesarestill provingasocialandfinancialsuccess.

Atthesametimewewouldliketoremindallmembers.thattheseasonis nearingitsend,andthatitwouldbe mostcreditabletotheClubifthese functionscouldretaintheirpresent popularitytothefinish.

AsitisalongtimesincetheClub hasheldanylargedancefunction,we aresurethatallmemberswillhail withdelight,thenewsthatthereisto beagrandCinderelladance,withfull jazzorchestra,onthe20th.inst.As thisdanceisunderthecontrolofthree prominentworkersduringtherecent populargirlcompetition,allmembers maybeassuredthatthefunctionwill beamagnificentsuccess.

LloydGeorgehascommencedhiswlenderinegs.Wehavenodoubtthey willbefilledwithincidentthatwillnotbewhollyunpleasant.Thereis humour,energyandsparkleinthelittleWelshman,andhehasaneloquent andbreezywayofsayingthings.Witnesshiscordialityatthesend-offat WaterlooStation:"Imuchappreciateyourkindnessandgoodwillinseeingtripoffthepremises.LookaftertheOldCountry."Thedearoldchap wasnotunmindfulofthepolitical"friends"whowouldberejoicedbyhis departure,particularlythat"friend"whonotlongagodeclaredhimtobe amenacetopeace,,andwhoprobably-watchedhimoffthepremises.There willneverthelessbemanyuneasyheartsinBritainjustbecausethislittle Welshlawyerknowshowtolegallyhitandhurt.Thenagain,takethecausticsodainhisspeechattheluncheongivenhimbytheAmericanSocietyin theSavoyHotel.Thewinewasgood.sowashisavowalthathewasnot goingtotheUnitedStatesasamissionaryora"bootlegger."Thelittle manisgoinga-wanderingtoseethingsandtosaythings.Thewanderings aresuretoheveryinterestingwhenreadinanewbook.

SomeoneoncesaidthatthissparselypeopledContinent.whichourchildren singas"ourlovelymorningland."isthewhiteman'slastheritageonearth. Itiscertainlyaverybigheritageinsizeandnaturalrichness,end,without

anyslavishconformitytotheaveragesloppysentimentwhichvisitorsare wonttolavishuponusonoccasions,afterwehavebanquettedand mademuchofthem,wedon'tmindconfessingAustralianshavebeenfavouredbytheCreatorwithasingularlynoblebirthright. .Abigbroadexpansiveland,endowedwitheveryattributeofbeauty,inwhosefecundwomb areuntoldriches,alandofsunshineandfertilitythatisunexcelledbecause ofitswonderfulpossibilities,byanyotherlandwithinorwithouttheEmpire,anationwithapeacefulandplacidhistory,unsmutchedbythelustof conquestandadventurestainingthesoulsofoldernations,ineveryrespectalandworthyofbeingthehomelandofawarm-hearted,generous,virileraceoffreemensuchasitcancertainlyboast-howthendoesitcome aboutthat13,000AustralianshaveforeswornthisrichinheritanceforAmericancitizenship.DoesAmericaofferawiderfieldfortalent,energy,enterprise?IsAmericancitizenshipofhighervalueinnationalismthanours? Arewelesserintheranksofpeoplesthanthecitizensofthismany-raced Republic?Duringthewarfromeveryplatform,fromtheimprovisedsoapboxtothetheatre,fromwhicheveronea"patriot"couldmakehisdogmatic pronouncementsontheimportanceandsacrednessofAustraliancitizenship moreimpressivelyheard,weweremadetounderstandthatassharersinthe Empire'sdestinyweapproximatedtowhatTennysonhadinhisvisionwhen hewrote"weareancientsoftheearthandinthemorningofthetimes." Hasthevarnishmeltedofftheprettypictureandhave13.000ofourbrethren beendisillusionedanddrivenouttoseekunderthefoldsofthestarspangled bannerwhattheycouldnotgetundertheSouthernCrossoftheircradleland?Lookslike'it-butitwouldinterestusverymuchifanhonestexplanationtothecontrarycouldbemadebythoseoptimisticgentrywhoare boostingtheindiscriminatefloodingofthiscountrywiththeunemployed andindigentpeopleofBritain.ThetimeisrottenripeforprotestbyAustraliansagainsttheindiscriminateswampingofthelabourmarketsofthis countrywiththeunemployedoftheOldCountry.Forthewhilethere seemstobeafrightenedfeelingprevalentthatanyprotestagainstimmigrationwouldbeunpatriotic.Wedonotagreewiththatnotion.Wecannot believethatthebestinterestsofAustraliaisservedbypusillanimitywhen theeconomiclifeoftheCommonwealthisseriouslythreatenedwithfinancial disturbanceanddistress.

Therecanbenoreasonableobjectiontoimmigrationworkedoutona rationalschemeforthepeoplingofAustraliawiththatclassofmigrantit needsandwhomitcansettlewithoutdisplacingthenativeproductofAustralia.Itisallegedagainstthehaphazardselectionofmigrantsintheold landthatquestionablepoliticalmotivesareatworktointerferewithindustrialconditionsinthiscountry.Whetherthatbesoornot,wearesatisfiedthatthenativebornadolescent'schancesoffindingopportunityforhis industryandtalentsarebeinggreatlyminimisedbytheimportationofboy migrants.Notonlycanthemethodsoftheimmigrationauthoritiesbe complainedofinthatregard,buttheintroductionofunemployedartisansof Britaintothiscountrytoaddtothelistofourbattalionsofunemployedand tobecomeeventuallyachargeuponthecommunity,isinfaceofthefactsof industrialismineveryStateofthisCommonwealthbadandfoolishbusiness. Ouryoungmenarefacedwiththealternativeofeithersubmittingtoan intensivecompetitionintheskilledandunskilledlabourmarkets,inwhich theytoofrequentlyfindpreferenceagainstthem,orelsethetransferringof theirtalentsandenergieselsewhere.Itisnotanencouragingviewthatpresentsitselftous,andtherecentdeclarationmadebyMr.Charltoninhis reviewofthefinancialpositionoftheCommonwealthdoesnotdispelthe cloudsthatoverhang ofGovernment,StateandFederal.

Wehavesaidbefore,itisworthrepeatingagain,thatourpoliticiansare whatwemakethem.ThetroublewithAustraliansisthattheywillnot traintheirmindstotakeinterestinthemattersthatarevitaltotheprogress oftheircountry.Iftheyputafractionofthementalenergyutilisedin pickingthewinnerintheprincipalsportseventsoftheyear.therewould surelybeabetterrecordintheexecutiveadministrationofthiscountry, andsomethingcomprehensiveandconstructiveachieved--somethingasour Mr.W.M.Hugheswouldputit,"towritehomeabout."

Thesickandthedyingalwaysarrestoursympathy.Thehospital wards,withtheirlinesofwhitebeds,theirconstantstreamofdoctorsand nurses,tellusofthebroken,wounded,andstrickenone'slot.Theyarethe weakonesofthecommunity,andwhenthecryforhelpcomesfromthose silentwardsofthesick,thehumanheartthrobbinginaChristianbreast hearkedsuntothecryspontaneously.Sickness,whichistheforerunnerof death,openstheheartoftherobustandpromptstheChristiasltocorporal worksofmercy.TohelpthesickanddyingisaworkofmercyblessedespeciallybyGod.Ourreaders,evergenerousinthecallofcharity, havenowaveryspecialoutletfortheircharitablezeal.ThePerthHospital. thelargestintheState,doesaworldofgoodinthecommunity.Agreat percentageofourCatholicpeoplearetreatedandnursedthere.TheHospitalauthoritieshavemadeallarrangementsforthespiritualcareofCatholic patients,andthepriestisalwaysawelcomevisitor.Thoughtheinstitution ispublic,andnotdenominationalinanyway.yetwementionthefactofthe presenceofalargenumberofCatholicsthere,inordertoletourreaders knowthatthecryforhelpcomesfromourown.Thehospital.aswehave seenfromstatementsinthedailypress,is.notwithstandingaGovernment grant,unabletocarryonwithouttheassistanceofthepublic.Weneednot publishstatisticshereonthepoint,astheyarealreadyknowntothepublic. Arecitation,"NotUndetstood,"was giveninquiteafinishedstylebyMasterB.Cubas.Hereagainwefeelsure thattheauthorofthosetouchingverseswouldbequitesatisfiedthatthey lostnograceorshadeofmeaningin theclearutteranceandcorrectinterpretationwithwhichtheyweresetbeforethedelightedaudience,whichrecalledtheyouthfuldeclaimerbya mostinsistentencore.Twopartsongs followed,"TheGreenwoodOurHome" and"OntheWaters.-Itmayseem anexaggerationtosaythatahigher excellencemightbeconfidentlychallengedfromanycollegechoirinWA, butlastMonday'saudienceatHis Majesty'swillagreethattheClontarf singingisabsolutelyadmirable.There wascertainlynotechnicalblemish,the boystookthetimefromtheconductor, theRev.BrotherCaffrey.quitefault lessly,andtheirvoicesswelledtoa grandcrescendo,orrippledtoamelodiousglissando,accordingtothemovementsandmeasuresoftheconductor, inawaythatgaveevidenceofperfect trainingontheteacher'spart,andperfectunderstandingonthepartofthe boys.

Adanceiteminaconcertisusually anindividualpresentation,butthesystemfollowedatClontarfevidentlyfollowstheprincipleof"thegreatestgood ofthegreatestnumber,"forawhole stage-fullofboysdancedthe"Jig'set downontheprogramme,andthepoetryofmotioninthis,asintwosubsequentitems,theHighlandFlingand theSailor'sHornpipe,wasexquisite. MissMerciaScott,whowasresponsible forthedanceportionsoftheprogramme,certainlydoesnotleaveher pupils"beholdentoinsolentGreece." foranyperfectionofthedignityand graceofmotion,ofwhichwearetold theancientGreeksweresuchperfect exponents.

Acornetsolo,"ThenYou'llRememberMe,"wasgivenincreditablestyle byMasterMartinKinnane.Thougha littledifficult)'wasexperiencedwith twoorthreeofthehighnotes,therecoverywasinstant;andheshowed,as theysayinKerry,thathe"haditin bim."Thephysicalexercises,comprisingfreegymnastics,exerciseson thevaulting-horse,andpyramids.were characterisedbyapromptitude.and precisionofmovementaccordingto direction,whichtoldofperfectdisciplineandtraining.Thedrillinstructor. Rev.BrotherHefferan,showedawizardyofarchitectureinbuildingliving temples-pyramids. He'wavedno wand,butgaveamagictouchtothe vaultinghorse,andinstantlythesuperstructurebegantoriseuntilthewhole stagewasoccupiedwithastructureof livingbeings,buttressedwithrightand leftwings--"everymanabrick"-and withtowersandfinialsandflags,and theapplauseofthewholetheatrecrash-

Bothofthesewererenderdassoloand chorus,and,addedtotheperfectionof theblendedvoices,wasthefamiliarity ofeverybodywiththemelodies,and theprejudices'ofnearlyeverybodyin theirfavourasbeingstrainsofthe "nativemusicbeyondcomparing."

Aconsiderableamountoftrouble hadbeenexpendedonpreparingthe RifleRangeatNewNorcia,anditwas withnosmallfeelingsofpleasurethat thosewhohadhelpedtowardsitscompletionbehelditsofficialopeningby BrotherGuibertuson.Wednesdayafternoon.Onarrivingattherangethe boysproceededtothefourhundred mound,whereBrotherGuibertus,ina veryappropriatespeech,thankedthem fortheworktheyhaddoneunderthe veryablemanagenientofBrother Chanel,andexpressedhimselfsurprisedatsuchanoticeableimprovement intherange.BrotherChanelhaving responded,theDirectorthenfiredthe firstshotfromthefour hundred moundandobtaineda"bull"The othermoundswerethenopeningin successionbythesameprocesswith BrotherGuibertusperformingwellat alldistances.

TheKing'sBenchrefusedawritof habeascorpusineachcaseonthe groundthatastateofwarexistedand thatthearrestsanddetentionswere justifiedbymilitarynecessity.

TheCourtofAppeal,afterthree days'hearing,decidedunanimously thatithadnotbeenprovedthata stateofwarorarmedrebellionexisted,andmadeanordercommanding themilitaryauthoritiestoproducethe twoprisoners.

ThedecisionoftheCourthadan immediateeffectintheFreeStateParliament. IntheDail,Mr.O'Higgins,Minister forHomeAffairs,movedthesuspensionofthestandingordersinorder totakethePublicSafetyBill,onthe groundofurgency.Therewerethousandsofprisonersinmilitarycustody. Theyweredetainedunderthepowers inherentinthemilitaryarisingoutof theconditionsofarmedrevolt.The Courtshaddecidedthattheconditionsofarmedrevoltnolongerexisted,andtheGovernmentwouldnot havestatutorypowerstodetainthe prisoners.Animmediateandindiscriminatereleaseoftheseprisoners, whohadwagedwarontheStateby themostrecklessmethodsandupon theeconomiclifeofthecountry byall.themeansintheirpower, wouldbeagreatpublicdisaster,and wouldhaveareactionontheliberty andsecurityofthecountry. Theexperienceofthelastfewyears showsthatinterstatetoursdonotdo muchharmtothefootballoftheteam whentheyreturn.LastyearFitzroy returnedfromW.A.andwonthepre- miership,andthisyearEastFremantle looklikedoingthesame.Ofcourse itcanbearguedthattheabsenceof theseteamsextendstheseasontoofar intothehotweather,whichcertainly wouldhavebeenthecasehadEast Fremantletoplayanyteamswhen theyreturned,insteadofgoingstraight onwiththefinals

Subiacofieldedastrongsideagainst WestTorrens.Therewasnocomparisonbetweenthetwosides.To startwiththeAdelaideboysweretoo light,andthentheyoverdidhandballingtoomuch.Someoftheirefforts inthisrespectwereveryclever,so muchsothatafewofSubiaco'syounger disastrousplayersbegantoemulatethemwith results.Infactatleast threemaroonsweretryingtoshowoff. Thediscomfitureofoneofthesewas owedwithheartylaughterfromthe crowd.WestTorrens,_however,did notrelaxtheireffortsinanyway. Whatimpressedwastheirquietplay. InPerth,thehomeofgoodfootball (notalways),thelosingplayerstoo frequentlybegintoexchangepersonalremarksabouteachother.Suchwas thecaseonSaturday.

Someoftheonlookerswereinclined tobeverycriticalofMills,thegiant WestTorrenscaptain.Onemanwas overheardsayingthatthetallfellow couldnotgetagameinoneofour "B"Gradeteams.Ofcourse,ittakes alltypestomakeupafootballcrowd. buttheexpressionofsuchanopinion arguedahopelessstateofignorance orjustplainbias.Thereisnotone "A"GradeclubinPerthbutwould jumpatthechanceofincludingMills intheirranks,andoneteamonSaturdaycouldhavedonewithhim.

The"B"GradepremiershiphasfallentothePerthClub,whosevictory overSouthFremantlewasdecisiveand wellmerited.JerryMcAuliffewas oneofthebestbacksontheground. OtherswhoplayedwellwereExley.Sharpies,Matthews,Doneganand Kingston.Congratulationstothisclubanditshardworkingsecretary.

Districtfootballisspreading.In BrisbanetheLeaguehavepractically decidedonsixmetropolitanclubs.The extraordinaryweaknessofthecapi- talcityteamscomparedwiththoseof IpswichandToowoombahasledthe Leaguetotakethisstep,butitwill meanthepassingofaclubwhichhas beenoneofthebulwarksofBrisbane footballfor18years.Irefertothe ChristianBrothers'OldBoys,whohave neverprosperedundertheLeague code,butwerealwaystobereckoned withinUniondays.

Onebenefitfromdistrictfootballis thatateam'ssupportisdefinitelyloc. slicedinasuburbordistrict.The introductionofadistrictschemewill alsoputanendtothepeculiarnames

adoptedbysomeclubs.especiallyin Soccer.Wehavetoomuch"Rangers" and"Rovers"and"Wanderers,"but theprizemustbegiventotwoQueenslandclubs,andprominentones,viz., theBushRatsandthePineappleRovers.

TheQueenslandSoccerAssociation hasacteddrasticallywithMiller,the goal-keeperoftheBundambateam, whostruckanumpireonSaturdaylast. Thisisthethirdgeneralunpleasant. nessthathasoccurredinBrisbaneSoccerthisseason.Millerrepresented WestMoretonagainsttheChineseduringtheirrecentQueenslandvisit.

JackWorrall,inthe"Australasian." givesagraphicaccountofthestruggle betweenFitzroyandGeelonginthe firstsemi-final.Itseemsthatthere wasafairamountofbitternessbetweentheteams,especiallyasGeelong hasbeatenFitzroytwicethisseason. Thesedefeatstheyallegetobedueto Taylor,Geelong'scoach.usingFitzroy methodstodefeathisoldteam.At anyratethegameupheldthebesttraditionsofMelbourne"bashinandget him"football.Hagger,whoplaysa veryfairgame,wasflattenedoutby StanMolan.whocannonedintohim afteralittlesprintof40yards.

Atkinsonincurredthewrathofthe crowdalso,becauseofhisvigorousattentiontotheGeelongforwards.Matterslookedsobadthatalineoffoot policewasformedupinsidethefence. Thecrowdvigorouslyapplaudedany Geelongattemptatretaliation.Elliott andWilliamswerebadlyinjured. SpeakingafterthegameRattraysaid thatFitzroyhadtoplayGeelongand thecrowdaswell. LizzieHennessy,ownerofthepublic-house.lookingthroughhershop window,sawthemallpassby."A fineman,"shethought,"buthe'sblue withthecold."Shelookedafterhim sually.

Lizziewasstout,rosy,andmiddleed.andhadashinyblackhead :seresilverylinesshowed:longgold ear-ringshungfromherears.andher collar,borderedbyacream-coloured frill,wasfastenedbyalargegold brooch.Shewasdressedasher motherhadbeenfortyyearsbefore anduptothetimeofherdeath,and Lizzieneveraffectedanyotherfashion. Onemansatonahalfcask.andtwo etherssatonabenchfacingthecoun-ter.Theyoungmanonthecask leanedhishandsome,darkheadagainst thewallandenjoyedthedreamyhour insilence.Theothertwo-oldmen-sittingonthebenchspokeinmurmursthatonlydeepenedthedrowsinessoftheair.

MissHennessystooduptolightthe gas,and,asshedidso,theglassdoor movedalittleasifsomebodyoutside wished.butwasnotholdenough,to enter,A

Hesidledin,stillsmilingpropitia- tingly,andmakingsoundsinhis throat.

"Nell!"MissHennessycalled,then litthegas.andtheyoungmanreturnedtothecask,hisdarkeyesfixedon thedoorleadingtothekitchen.The twooldmenpausedintheirmurmuringtoregardtheshadowthathadentered.

"Godhelpthecrather!"sailone, whowasalabourer."It'shard enoughtobepoor,but,tobespachlessandhardo'hearin'aswell!

Andnearlydark,too,"addedthe er,whowasanavalpensioner.

heyshooktheirheadssadly,and toteslongdraughtsfromthepotsin theirhands,toconsolethemselves. Thenthelabourer,withdrowsyeyes, staredattheafflictedone.

"Here,Dummy,b'y,"hesaid,holdingthepottowardshim;"takeasup outo'that."

"No.Mick."objectedthelandlady hastily."No!'Twouldn'tberight: he'snotusedtostrongdrink.Nell!" shecalledagain.anldagirl'sfaceap- pearedatthedoorleadingtothekit-chen."Look.Nell.warmasupo' milkforthedummy."

"He'sperishedlooking,"remarked thegirl,beckoningtohim:then.turn- ingtowardsthecask.shesaid:"Good night,Willie."withasmilethatlitall herface.

Thepoorbeggarfollowedherinto thekitchen,andWillietriedtolookas ifhedidnotknowthatitwasthat smileandnotthegasthathadset allthebottlesshiningandtheglasses winkingontheshelves.

"An'notaloneishespachless.an' hardo'hearing',an'nearlydark,but heneverknewfatherormother,"min,

muredthevoiceofthelabourer,and thepensionernoddedhisheaddolefully,andgentlysmackedhislips.

MissHennessyresumedherseat,tak-ingupagainthestockingwhichshe hadbeenknitting.andwonderwhy Godhadsentthathaplesssoulinto thishardworld,bereftofeventhecommonestbutthemostessentialgifts; evenwithouthope,exceptthesort thanananimalmightpossess.For whatpurposewasthiSsufferingmortal formed?Whosesinstopunish,he himselfsinless?Hisparents?They wereunknown.Deadperhaps.Whose sinstoexpiate,hethesinless?Wasit fair?Wasitfair?

Lizzie'sheartcriedoutagainstthe intolerablethoughtasheartsthatfeel willcryoutwildlyinthisblindedlife againstthehiddenreason.Then,sigh- ing,shecurbedherheadstrong thoughtswith:"Sure,itmustberight ifit'sGod'swill."

"Iknewhismother,"thelabourer wassaying."Asmarttidygirlshe was,_finnyLynch."

"Wassheanyo'theLynchesfrom aroundhere?"murmuredthepension. er.

"Eyeh,no,"answeredthelabourer,hisvoicerunningwiththelowsonorousnessofadistantbrook."Shewas acounthrywomano'mine;shewas fromCurraghgree.Shediedafther herchildwasborn,an'hewasbrought upinthepoor-house."

Fifteenyearsprevioustothisnight,MissHennessyhadcometodwellin 13allyronan,bringingherniecewith her,andnowsherememberedhaving heardthatthedummy'smother'sname wasLynch,butshethoughtthatshe hadbeenanativeofBallyronan,for whatnameismorecommoninBally-ronanthanLynch?Glancingup,Liz- zienownoticedthattheyouthhad disappeared.

"WillieLynchisagoodscholard.I hear,"dronedthelabourer."He haveaclerkshipbelowinthedael yard."
