WomenMobLabourDelegatestoCongress

Extraordinaryscenesofviolencetook placeoutsidetheMansionHouse,Dubfin,onthe6th.oflastmonth,whenan onslaughtwasmadeonthedelegates attendingthe29th.annualConference oftheIrishLabourPartyandTrades' UnionCongress.

- Amobofseveralhundredmenand womenblockadedtheentrance,and delegatesattemptingtopassinwere severelyassaulted.

Umbrellasandhat-pinswereused, andsomeoftheLabourmenwere badlymauled,TransportUniondelegatesbeingespeciallysingledout.

Thecrowd,whokeptupacontinuous'hostiledemonstration,demanding thereleaseoftheprisoners,andcheeringforLarkin,helduptheproceedingsforaconsiderabletime.

Onlyabout66delegatesoutof241 wereabletogainadmission,butultimatelytheproceedingsoftheCongress werebegun,twohoursafterthetime fixedforthestart.

TheCongresswasfixedfor11o'clock, tattheentrancedoorswereopenbe. late10.30,andafairsprinklingofdelegatesandsomePressrepresentatives obtainedadmissionaboutthathour.

Sofar,allwasquiet,butabout10 about30womenappearedanddemandedadmission,theirobjectbeifig,itappeared,tolaythecaseoftheprisoners andinterneesbeforetheCongress,or, inthealternative,topreventtheCongressbeingheld. Onbeingrefusedadmissiontheyattemptedtorushthedoor,andused umbrellasandfistsfreelyonthosewhe endeavouredtobartheirprogress. Afterastiffstrugglethedoorwasclosed,andthewomenhadfailedtoget withintheMansionHousegrounds.A cordonofdetermined-lookingwomen, wasplacedinfrontofthesideentrance,andasecondcordontookupa positiononthestepsleadingtothe vestibuledoor.Somedelegateswere practicallyhurledhackbytheinfuriatedwomen,andsomewerequitebadlymauled,onedelegatefromtheprovincesbeingsoviolentlybeatenthat hehadtohavehisinjuriesdressedin aneighbouringchemist'sshop. Umbrellasdescendedonnotafew heads,buttheshrieksofthebelligerentsseemedtohaveamoreterrifying effect.Somedelegateswho.though' toreachthefrontentrancewererushed downthesteps,and,followedbyyellingwomen,soughtrefugeinthecrowd. whichhadnowgatheredtothenumberofsomehundreds.Theofficial shorthandwritertotheCongresswas literallycuffedbackwhenheattemptedtogainadmittance.andPressrepresentativeswerealsomolested,onejournalistbeingratherbadlyhandled.

At12o'clockthewomenwere"masters"ofthesituation,andexcluded delegatesweretobeseendiscussingthe situationingroupsin'Dawson-street. Manyofthesewereprominentpersonages.SupportersofJamesLarkin wereactivelymovingthroughthe crowdsandoccasionallyaddressingdelegatesinangrytones.Shouting. groaning,abuse,andcriesof"Release theprisoners"and"Up.Larkin."were repeatedagainandagain.

Thepubliccongressstartedatone o'clock.Mr.LukeDuffy,Distributive Workers'Union,presidingintheabsenceofMr.CathalO'Shannon,who hasresignedthechairmanship.The Chairman,onbehalfoftheNational Executive.badetheassembleddelegatesaheartywelcometotheCongress.ThenumberofdelegatesappointedthisyeartotheCongresswas, hethought,thelargestnumberappointedtoattendinthehistoryofthat body.Someofthedelegates,unfortunately,werenotpresent,huthe thoughttheyallknewwheretoplace theresponsibilityforthat.Itcould lieplacedonagentlemanwhowas onceknowninthetradeunionmovementinthecountry-agentlemanwho statedsomeweeksagothatthere wouldbenoCongress.Thatgentleman(Mr.Larkin)attemptedtousethe machineryofthelawtopreventthe Congressbeingheld.Havingfailed inattemptingtoevokethelawtostop theCongress,henowevokedtheaid oftherabbletopreventthedelegates fromattending.Someofthepeople outsidethebuildingwere,perhaps, sympatheticwiththeaimsoftheCongress.andwerenotresponsibleprobablyfortheworstthingsthathad occurredoutside.

IRISHSENATORONCLASSWAR.

TherewillbefiftyLabourcandidates attheforthcomingGeneralElection.

Thefinaldisruptionofthenation intoanationofpropertyandanation ofnopropertywaspartiallyrealised.

ThesestatementsweremadebyMr. LukeDuffy,chairman,inhisaddress atMonday'smeetingoftheIrish TradesUnionCongress.Ileregretted thatMr.CathalO'Shannonwasunable tobewiththemaschairmanofthe Congress.Havingdiscussedthecivil warofthelastyear,hesaidithad splittheoldSinnFeinPartyintwo. Howevermuchtheymightstrivetoshutoutthefactfromimmediateconsiderationtheoppositiontothepre. sentregimewasnotyetended.Sooner orlateritwouldfindanewerand moredefiniteexpression.

ThelongingforFreedom-thefreedomofwhichConnollywasthelatest andmostperfectexponent,wasnotyet stifled.Solongasoneman,orone class,onegrouporonesexexploited ordemandedtributefromothermen andwomentheage-longinsurgencyof theIrishpeoplewouldfindexpression insomeshapeorform,anddemanding rightstheyhadlongcherishedasa naturalinheritance,wouldfindameans toendthepoliticalandeconomiceditquestofthecountry.Nocountry withIreland'stradition,andnopeoplewiththetenacityandperseverance oftheIrishcouldeverberecugciled tothepermanentartificialdismembermentofterritoryandpeople.

Shortlyafter12o'clock,adelegate whohadsucceededingainingadmission,andwhowithanumberofothers wasseatedontheboundarywallof thegrounds,indicatedtosomeofthose anthestreettocomearoundtothe sideentrance.Hewasobserved,however,andamidyellsandhostilecries thewomenrushedtostrengthentheir positionatthedoor.Amomentlater thedoorwasthrownopenandseveral mensalliedoutapparentlywiththe objectofclearingapassagefortheir excludedcolleagues.Afreefightfollowed,inwhichsticks,umbrellas,and fistswerefreelyused.Someofthe womenwerebornefromthefrayhatlessandbleeding. Brokenumbrellasinthehandsof youngwomenshowedtheferocityof theencounter,andmorethanoneman badnastyheadwounds.

Thepolice,whouptothishadbeen passivespectators,intervenedatthis stage.and,inchargeofanInspector. forcedapassagethroughthecrowd, andlinedupinfrontofthedisputed door.Theyweresubjectedtomuch ill-usage.which.however,theybore good-humouredly.MadameGonne MacBridearrived,andwascheered.beingfollowedshortlyafterwardsbyMrs. Sheehy-SkeffingtonandMrs.Despard. PresidentCosgraveandhiscolleagueswereentertainedatabanquet intheFarnhamHotel,Cavan,onSundayevening,the5th.ult.Rev.Dr. Comes-.Adm.,phopresided,proposing "ThePresidentandVisitors,"paidan eloquenttributetoPresidentCosgraveandthemembersoftheGovernmentwhohadsavedthecountryfrom destruction.PresidentCosgrove,responding.saidtotheloyalsupportand finecourageoftheprivateinempersof bothHouseswasverymuchduethe successoftheGovernmentincoming throughaverydifficultperiodwithout anygreatjolt.Ilemadespecialmen.. tionoftheDeputiesforCo.Cavan, Messrs.ColeandMilroy,andadded thatintheDailtheGovernmenthad lostthesupportofonlyonedeputy.

Mr.Blythe,'DD.,replyingtothe toast,"OurGaelicTongue,"saidhe believedthatbutfortheTreatythere wouldhavebeenreallynohopeofsavingtheIrishlanguage,for,inspiteof theworkdonebytheGaelicLeague andotherorganisations.itwassteadilydisappearing,butnowtheyhad themeansintheirhandsofsavingthe language.

LANGUAGEORGANISATIONPOE THEARMY.

AuIrishconventionheldatG.H.Q., resolvedtoformthe"Fiannenan-Oglach"tofostertheIrishlanguagein theArmy,andframedaconstitution forsame.

Rev.J.Pigott,C.F.(DublinCommand),presided,andtheproceedings wereconductedentirelyinIrish.A messagewasreceivedfromtheCommander-in-Chiefexpressingregretfor hisunavoidableabsenceandwishing theconventioneverysuccess.

Itwasofficiallyannouncedthatthe newdecorationwouldbeafainnework. edingoldthreadonthesleeveofthe

uniform.itwasdecidedtorequest theAdj.-Gen.tohaveanofficialcensus ofspeakersandpossibleteachersof Irishatpresentinthearms.andto haveaspecialcommandorderissued recognisingtheappointmentandstatus ofthecommandteachta,andrequestingbattalioncommanderstoassistand facilitatethemintheirwork,andto, havetheirnamesissuedincommand orders. Itwasfurtherdecidedthatthefirst examinationshouldbeheldtowards theendofSeptember,Lieut.-Gens. OSulleabhain,0MuirthuilleandPiarasBeaSlaitoconductit.Anumber ofminordetailswerearrangedandit wassuggestedthatthepresentationof thenewdecorationshouldbemadein NovemberasafunctionofaSaman festival.

InIrelandnolessthan70.00opeople wereeithertotallyunemployed,workingatpart-timeemployment,serving inthearmy,ordetainedasprisoner, ingaolsandinternmentcamps.Under thepresentsystemthereseemeds.ery littleprobabilitythatthemajorityo: thesemenandwomenwouldfindan employment.Itseemedstrangemoneycouldbefoundforgunpowder,butnot forbuildinghouses.

SenatorThos.Farrensaidtheyhad thefarmers,someofwhomneveremployedamanintheirlives,linkedtogetherintheFarmers'Associationwith thold-timelandlords,oneofwhom saidtheotherdaythattheyrepre sentedthecultureofthecountry. TheseclasseswerenowtmitedinWaterfordandotherplacesagainstth, farmlabourerandothers.whowere membersoftheI.T.andG.W.Union.

Itwasabouttimethattheworkers realisedthattherewassuchathing, asaclasswar-anantagonismofinterestsbetweenthemenandwomen workersandtheemployingclass.lie hopedtheLabourPartywouldseethat theinterestsoftheworkerswereprotected.

Inallotherrespectsthechurchand itscontentsstoodasonthatsadday whenthekeyhadbeenturnedonthe departingCatholicworshippers-and thevastedificeturnedovertoProtest. anthands.To-dayitservesthepurposeofamonumenttotheFaiththat madepossibleitsachievement.andas ithasneverbeendespoiledofitstreasures,revealsthetruegrandeurofCatholicservyeinthedayswhenthe Teutonicknightswereamightypowe: Altto-dayavisitbringsother nights.OnecannotavoidreflectiononthedispensationsofGod:DanzigclosedtheMarienkircheandother equallyfamouschurchesandmonasteriestotheirrightfulowners.The cityitselfhasnowbeenbottledin;it hasbecomeaneconomicmistake.Of allthecompromisesmadeatVersailles. noneismoreobviouslyunsoundthan DanzigFreeState.Itssituationis. indeed,similartothatofAustria,a citycutoff,aheadwithnobody. WhenPolandwasdugoutofthe ruinsoftheformerRussianempire,.it wassuddenlyrealisedthatthenew countrymusthave'directaccesstothe sea.Nowtakeyourmap.Youwill seehowtheproblemwassolved.Danzig,ontheshoreoftheBaltic,dominatedthemouthoftheVistula,which connectsPolandandthesea.Apatch oflandabout750milesinextent,irregularinshape,formerlypartofWest PrusSia.Verygood.andveryeasy tomakeitaFreeCity.Nobodytroubledastohowthetinynewcountry wastosurvive.whereitwastoobtain food.

Danzigisnotanindustrialcity.Its functionhasbeentoserveasacommercialport.withimmenseexportsof grain,lumber,sugar.rthadtwovast shipbuildingyards,onegovernmentowned.Twoofthefinestwarehouses inEurope,togetherwithgreatsugar refineries,wereidle.Theseelevators handledenormousquantitiesofRussiansugar.principallyfromtheUkraineandintendedforEngland. LargequantitiesofGermansugarwere alsorefinedhere.Russiaimposeda dutyonfreesugar,butpermittedthe exportofsawsugar,sotherewas plentyofbusinessfortherefineriesbeforethewar.EasternGermany,PolandandRussiaalsosenttheirtimber andgraintoDanzigforexport.Beforethewartheyearlyexportstotalled 275.000tonsandtheimportsnearly 400.000.Thelatterconsistedchiefly ofcoal,cokeandoilfromEnglandfor theindustriesinPosen,Lodz,Thorn andWarsaw.

ForatimefollowingthewarDanzigwasadeadplace,withshopsclosed andfoodpracticallynon-existent.But whenthesuperbportfacilitiescame intoservicefortheAmericanrelief supplies,theoldcitywasrevivified. Menagainfoundemploymentandthe tonnagewasalmostequivalenttothe pre-warperiod. Iwatchedfourteen ships,inharbouratthesametime,unloadthefoodfrom.America.But thatfactdidnotmeanthatDanzig hadreturnedtoitsoldprosperity. Thatday-waitsorPoland'sgoodfortune.

Danzighasapopulationof350,000. jItscommercialimportanceisfoundin ltapositionatthemouthoftheVistulaandthefactthatitisPoland's portandapartofthePolishCustoms. Butfromeightytoninetypercentof itspopulationisGermaninlanguage, customsandstandardsofliving.

TheGovernmentisaSenateand LowerHouse,electedbythepeople. Taxes,itappeared,furnishedtheonlysourceofGovernmentrevenue,and werehigh.Accordingtofiguresgiven in1921,amanhavinganincomeequiv- alentto5.000dollarsayearwouldbe taxed45percent.,whileoneearning 40dollarsamonthwouldpayfrom12 to15percentintaxes.

TheCatholictraditionsofancient Danzigclusterabouteverystickand stoneoftheoldcity,everypartof ss)ichappearstodatebacktomedievaldays.Itshistoryisthestoryof medievalfaith.Itsmonumentsare numerousexamplesoftheawe-inspir-' ingreligiousarchitectureofthedays whengreatartistscounteditanhonourtodevotetheirtalentstotheembellishmentofchurchesandmonasteries.Itsgalleriedstreets,towers

in"America." andcanalshavegiventheinspiration forcharmingoldengravings.Thecity isfarenoughfromthebeatentourist tracktoremainunspoiled.Thereare noguides,nosight-seeingabominations,thoughitoffersundisputed charmstotheantiquarian.

NapoleontookittoParis.whereitremaineduntil1815,whenitwasreturned.Berlinwishedtopossessit:Peter theGreatsoughtinvaintopurchase it.Thereareexquisitewindowsbestowedbykings.Therearethirty chapels,forty-sixaltars,andthirty verytallandverybeautifulwindows. The"Bootmakers'Guild"hadachapel andthewindowstillbearsthesignof theboot.Otherguildshadprivate chapels,aswellassomeof.theimportantfamilies.Theyalsoservedas familytombs.Inonesuchchapel whererepairsweremadeinrecent years,thirtyhugestonecoffinswere takenout:theyshowednosignofthe decayofthecenturies.

Formerlythechurchwasservedby 128priests.Portraitsofmanyof themhangoverthevestry.Thebaptisterystandsasofold.Itisofsolid bronze,wascastinHolland,andis verybeautiful.Surroundingitisa highbronzescreen,richlycarved. Thereisawonderfulirongrilleinthe churchandbronzescreensinfrontof thechapels.Duranger'sastronomical clockisinthischurch,anditisawondertocontemplate.Thehighaltar wasdonebyAugsburg.Similarinterestattachestothemanyotherhistoric churchesofthiscity.

Mostinteresting,however,ofallthe oldinstitutionswasthebeautifulAbbeyofOliva,neartoDanzig,founded bytheCistercianmonks,andactive fromthetwelfthcenturyuntilseized byFredericktheGreatin1772.who suppressedtheOrder.TheAbbotwas allowedtheuseOftheAbbeyandgardensuntilhisdeath.Hisnominal successorremaineduntil1836,whenthe longlineoffifty-threeOlivaAbbots cametoanend.TheOrderlasted639 years. Thentherewas"Marienburg.'seat oftheTeutonicnights,whoruledan empire.TheKnightswerecalledfrom VeniceinthetwelfthcenturytoconvertthestillnumerousPrussianheathen.Heretheyfoundanewfield ofusefulness,andfoughtbravelytoresisttheAsiaticadvanceandtocrush heathenism.Marienburgwasatonce apalatialresidence.afortress,a church,acouncilhouse,a"sleeping" placefortheirdead.Forcenturies, siegeandstorm,plunkringsandbarbaricdestruction,jealousyandignorance,fanaticism,fireandeveryother evilcombinedineffortstooverthrow thiscentreofculture,raisedtothe gloryoftheBlessedVirginMary,on thebanksoftheRiverNogat,inthe oldRomanvillageofAlyem,butthe Knightsprovesstrongerthanalltheir enemies.TheseatoftheOrderwas removedtherefromVenicein1309. andsoonthereafterbeganaperiodof greatexpansion.Astandingarmywas

maintained.alwaysreadytotakethe held.IntimesofdangerDanzig's sea-faringmenwerecalledtothe Knights'assistance,incommonwith thewhoiecountrypopulace.

DuetotheprotectionoftheTeutonicKnights.Danzigbecameoneof thestrongestunitsintheHanseatic League.PrincesandambassadorsdinedatMarienburg.Kingsandqueens madegifts.Atreatyofcommerce wasactuallymadewithKingRichard II.,andanotherinthetimeofQueen Anne,acopyofwhichcanbeseenin theDanzigcity-archives.WeareenabledtoformanopinionoftheprosperousstateoftheOrderwhenwe readthatin1387thecornmasterhad inhisstores211,860bushelsofcorn, andthecattlemasterhadincharge 2,300sheep.Inthe"goldendays"of theOrdertherewere21,000villages. DuringtheThirtyYears'War90.000 inhabitantswerekilled.

For300yearsDanzigWasunitedto Poland.Butin1793thecity'ssplen- dourfadedawaylikeawiltedflower. anditwasformallyannexedtoPrussia.Napoleontookthecityin1805, establishingahospitalatMarienburg. Againitbecameafreecity,butnot forlong,asitwasdefinitelycededto PrussiaandremainedGermanuntil thepeacesettlements.

In1894EmperorWilliamII.offered atMarienburgthistoast: "Thecastle,withinwhosewallsthe whitemantleandtheblackcrossof theKnightswereworn,wasthechief fortressofpatrioticGermanyagainst theEast.Fromitspreadforthculturetoalllands.Mostheartily,therefore,dowewishtheprovince,thatthe Marienburgshalleverremainasym- bolofGermannationality."
