Thediamondjubileeofat.George's Cathedral,Southwark,wascelebrated onJuly4th.last.Seventy-fiveyears agotheCathedralwasopenedbythe thenBishopWiseman.Thisanniversarywasmarkedwithduesolemnity bythepriestsandpeopleoftheCathedralparishandofthediocese.Clergy fromallpartswalkedintheprocessionfromtheBishop'sHousetothe Cathedral,andpresentedanimpressivesight.Besidesthesecularpriests, Capuchlms.Redemptorists.Jesuits, Augustinians,Salesians,andotherreligiousparticipated.Followingthese wereMgr.Warwick.Mgr.Brown,V.G., Mgr.Sprankling,CanonsW.Murnane, E.Murnane,J.Sheen,andothermembersoftheChapter,whoaccompanied theBishop.Theywerereceivedat thedooroftheCathedralbytheAdministrator.FatherCorbellis. Thelargeedificewascrowded,and amongthosepresentweretheMayor ofSouthwark,inhisrobeofoffice;the Mayoress,theSouthwarkTownClerk, SirJohnGilbert.MissGilbert,and manyotherwell-knownCatholics.BishopAmigosangPontificalHighMass. HewasassistedbyFatherP.Balletas deacon,andFatherJ.Douchesubdeacon.Mgr.Brownassistedatthe throne.FatherJ.Farrellwasthe M.C.Thechoirwascomposedofthe seniorstudentsofSt.John'sSeminary, Wonersh.AllthereligiousOrders, menandwomen,ofthediocesewere represented.

ChallengetoProtestantEngland.

"Itisseventy-fiveyears,"saidFather Hampton,S.Jwhopreachedthesermon,"tothedaysince,onthe4th. July,1848,thisCathedralwassolemnly openedforDivineworship.Itwasan eventwhichattractedconsiderableattentionatthetime,andwithreason. Itwaslessthaneightyyearssincethis veryspot,thenknownasSt.George's Fields,hadseentheoutbreakofthe No-PoperyRiotsunderLordGeorge Gordon.Itwasonlyafewyearssince therepealofthePenalLaws,andonly nineteensincethepassingofCatholic Emancipation."

Whenthisedificewassolemnlyopeneditwasdonewithoutanypretence ofconcealment.Itwasentirelythe workofCatholichands.Thesolemn inaugurationwasattendedbytheeight Vicars-ApostolicsofEngland,supported bybishopsfromforeignparts,by240 priests,and3.000people.Thiswasa noteworthyevent;itwasachallenge toProtestantEngland.Thisevent wascommemoratedto-dayontheoccasionoftheCathedral'sdiamondjubilee.Wealsocommemoratedtheheroic strugglewhichmadethisresultpossible. Whatneedwastheretoremindthecongregationofthegallant standmade,bytheremnantofallthat remainedofthefaithfulofthisonce CatholicEnglandagainstoverwhelmingoddsforthepreservationoftheold faith?

OverthrownAltars.

Mated.fined,impoverished.imprisoned, banished.outlawed,tortured,their priestspersecutedaidhandedoverto liehanged,drawnandquartered.The churchesweredespoiled,thealtars overthrown.

YettheCatholicfaithfulneverlost heart,andneverdespaired.ItNeesa noteworthyfactthatthisCathedral wasdedicatedtoSt.George.themartyr andpatronofEngland,andshould havebeenopenedonthedaywhenwe keptthefeastofSt.Alban,thefirst Englishmartyr.ForthisCathedral wasthefirstfruitsofthevictorywon IrytheEnglishmartyrs.Itwastheir memorial"untogenerationandgeneration."

Itwasnotamemorialalonetothose martyrsofthedaysofpersecution;it wasalsoamemorialtothosewhohelptorearthesewalls.Theywere menwhoservedinhumblemission chapels,"Mass-houses,"astheywere oftencalled,tobefoundinthemeanestsurroundings,andwhichpreceded thisCathedral.

FaithNeverLostinSouthwark.

Theykepttogetherthehandfulof EnglishCatholicswhowerethrowntogether,andwhowerebeingreinforced bytheirbrethreninIreland,whocarriedontheFaithwhichhereinSouthwarkhadneverbeenlost.Themen whocommencedSt.George'sCathedral wereconvincedthatthetimehadgone byfortimidcounselandhesitating policyintheChurchinEngland.and pursuedamorevigorousandcourageouscourse.Thesemenwereregarded atthetimebymanyoftheirfellow-Catholicsasunpractical,asamiableenthusiasts.asseersofvisionsanddreamersofdreams.Whowouldnowsay thattheywerewrong?Menofvision theyundoubtedlywere,andwhenthey sawthisCathedral.notonlyopened, buttwoyearslater,thesceneofthe enthronementofCardinalWisemanas thefirstArchbishopofWestminster underthenewly-restoredCatholicHierarchy,theirdreamswerebeginningto cometrue.

RisingHopeoftheChurch.

Inconcluding.FatherHampton pointedoutthatwhentheCathedral wasbuiltthenumberofthefaithful inthewholediocesenumberedbetweentwenty-eightandtwenty-nine thousandsouls.Theynownumbered 150.000.Therewerethenfiftypriests; nowtheclergy,secularandregular, numberedoverfivehundred.Some twentychurcheswereerectedthen;at presentthereweretwohundredand twenty.Intheelementaryschoolsof thediocesethereweretwenty-twothousandchildren,whoweretherisinghope oftheChurchinthedioceseofSouthwark.Tomakeanycomparisonsbetweenthesefiguresitwouldbealso necessarytotakeintoaccountthedioceseofPortsmouth,towhichSouthwarkhadgivenbirth.

ThecnietspeakerattheEastport meetingwasintroducedastheKing KleaglefortheStateofNewYork.

"GovernorAlSmith,bysigningthis bill.hasbarredhimselfforeverfrom thePresidencyoftheUnitedStates." hesaid."TheKlanpledgesitself nevertorevealthenamesofitsmembers.Wewillfighttothelastbreastworktopreventpublicdisclosuresof ouridenties."

KlansmenfromthreeStatesattend edthegatherings,itwasclaimed.

TheKlansdefiancebroughtforth strongeditorialcondemnationbythe "NewYorkTimes"andthe"NewYork Herald."

"ItrestswithofficersoftheStatein eachcounty,thedistrictattorneysand sheriffs."saysthe"World,""toarrest andbringtotrialanywhocriminally defythelaw.Forcause,whichwould includeneglectofdutyormalfeasance, theseofficialsareremovablebythe Governor.Ifinanycountythelocal governmentfindsitselftooweakto putdowninsurrection,itcanappealto theStateforaid.Havingsignedthe bill,GovernorSmithcanhetrustedto seethatthelawdoesnotbecomea deadletterthroughKlandefiance."

TheCatholicAttitude. Suchan.educationisnotprovided bytheState,andconsequentlywe decidetoprovideitourselves.Our attitudeinthemattercannotbeunderstoodbytheworld,becousethey estimateitaccordingtotheirown standards.Weknowbetter.We havepaid,andstillcontinuetopay, abigpriceforourconvictionsinthe matter.ButIaskyouhasnotthe historyofthiscountrymorethan justifiedusinourunyieldingattitude? Whenthequestionofasecularschool wasfirstmooted,theCatholicChurch wasaloneinitsdentinciation.She recordedherprotest,butwasnotsupportedbyanyotherreligiousbody. Shepointedoutthedangertothe Statefromsuchapolicy.Sheexhortedthedifferentdenominationsto considertheeffectsofthisontheir people.Butitwasnotapopular attitude,andherwordsfellonunheedingears.To-dayweareinthe positiontojudgeheraction,because thehistoryoftheeffectslaybefore us.

TheStateisnotsatisfiedwithits output.Thereareseriousminded menaskingthemselves;Arewegettingaproperreturnforoureducationaltax?Publicjournalscriticise theyouthfromtheseschools,thereis somethinglackingintheyouth,they donotseemtohaveanyrespectfor laworage.youknowinstinctivelyon meetingthechildwhetherhehasbeen educatedinStateschoolornot.

ThereisafinalpointwhichweCatholics.asubstantialpartofthecommunity,shouldneverlosesightof. Ourschoolsaredoingworkintheordinarysubjectsquitecomparablewith theStateschools.HereinthisState weareinspectedandexaminedby Stateofficialsonthesameprogramme astheStateschoolsfollow.Thereportsofthosemengiveoccasionfor ajustprideinourwork.Allthose reportspassthroughmyhands,andI oftenthinkwhenIreadthemofthose whoquestiontheworkofourSisters andBrothers.TopassageneralverdictonthemImustsaythattheyare veryflatteringtoourteachers.

Moreover,ifweapplythetestof efficiencyasprovedbytheresults,our positionismuchsuperiortotheState. Theprimaryschoolscholarships awardedtochildrenof14yearswithin theStatecomeintoourschoolsin muchlargernumbersthanourproportionmerits.Oflateyearswe haveheadedthelists,andarestronglyrepresentedinthefirsttencandidates.Lastyear'slistcontains twelvenamesamongthescholarship winners,witha7th.and11th.place amongthem.InthePrimarySchool Bursarieswehavesixsuccessfulcandidates,with2nd,5th,?0th,and11th. placesgained.TheEducationDepartment,forreasonsbestknownto itself,havenowdecidednottopublish themin-theorderofmeritanylonger. Whytheydidsoremainsamystery. Therearestrongreasonstobelieve thattheStateteachersdidnotlike thecompetitionwithourschools. Theirchiefgrievanceagainstour teacherswasthatourpupilsweretoo carefullypreparedandcoachedfor thoseexaminations.Seeminglythe Departmenthavelistenedtothiscomplaint.Well,itisagooddefectin ourschoolstobesoefficientthatcompetitionwasundesirable,becausethe resultsdidnotrecommendtheState teacherstoohighly.Ilookonthe decisionoftheDepartmenttoabolish thisorderofmeritinthePrimary Scholarshipasthebestcompliment thathaseverbeenpaidtoourschools. Fromhenceforththescholarship awardsarenotofmuchvaluetous. Themoneyisadvancedtohelpthe childoftheStateschooltomakeita preserveforhim.Theawardof£50 perannumtoattendaboardingcollege,orof£20perannumtoattend adayschool,wassomethingtowork for.Ourtalentedchildrenneeded thissubsidytofacilitatetheircompleteeducation.Thathasnowbeen abolishedandafiatrateof£3per annumistobegiventoallthesuccessfulcandidates.ChildreninState schoolswillfindthislittleincome useful,butofwhatvalueisittothe Catholicchildwhohastopayafeeat ourHighSchools?

IfyouknowsomeoftheCatholic communitywhodonotappreciatethe workdonebyourschoolsintheordinarysubjects,putthisdecisionof theDepartmentbeforethem,withthe listofpreviousresults,andthenask themtoexplaintheDepartment'sdecision.WehaveyetsomeCatholics whoneedtobeeducatedinappreciationoftheworthofourteachers. Theyshowtheiropinionofthembysendingtheirchildrenelsewheretobe educated.

TobecomeaCatholiconeisnotrequiredtoabandonanytruthwhichhe alreadybelieves,becauseitisthevery natureoftheCatholicfaiththatitincludesalltruth.TobecomeaCatholicistocompleteone'sbeliefby embracinginadditiontothosetruths alreadyacknowledgedotherstaught byOurLordwithequalcertitudeand plainness.

IrishLabourandtheComingElection

I.CanItTriumph?

Weseedailypreparationsfora GeneralElection.Everythingindicatesthattheissuesonwhichitwill befoughtarelikelytobeeconomic ratherthansentimentaLTwogreat interestsaredeterminedtomakea boldefforttoextendtheirinfluence intheDail-AgricultureandLabour. Farmersandworkerswillbethebiggestforcesintheelectioneeringfield.

Theyrepresentoppositetendencies.Buttheirpoliticalstruggleforpower isnotanunhealthysign.Forthe firsttimeinthecountry'shistorythe electoratewillbeconfrontedwith purelypracticalaffairswithoutany complicationastonationalrightsand aspirations.Asaconsequencepoliticswillrevolveroundtheclaimsof rivalclassesinstead.

Frompresentindicationsitdoesnot seemlikelythatLabourwillbestrong enoughtocomeintopowerinthe nextDail.Irelandnotbeingyetan industrialcountrythe*orkingcommunityisacomparativelysmallone, andtheproprietorialinterestsarerelativelylarge.ThenewDailwillprobablybeformedforthemostpart bynomineesofthefarmingandcommercialelements.Buttherecanbe littledoubtthatLabour,thoughnot triumphant,willgreatlyincreaseits strength.

TheadvanceofLabourasapolitical factoristhemosttellingdevelopment inrecenttimes.InIrelandduring thelasttenyearsitsmarchhasbeen extraordinarilyrapid.Fromthisonwardthepacewillbeaccelerated.

N.APracticalProgramme.

TokeepIrishLabourfrombecomingtaintedbytheinfluencesthatare distortingthedemocraticmovement elsewherewillbeanimmediatenecessity. Catholicthinkershavefreelyrecognisedthatsocialistsarenotfarwrong intheiroutcryagainstmoderngovernmentasthesourceofthedreadful evilsthatspringfromuncontrolled capitalism.

Socialistsoftheanti-Christiantype are,however,exploitingthegrievancesofworkersasameansoffurtheringtheirowndesigns.Itispart oftheirproceduretopromptaready resorttostrikes.Theybelievethat theirownarrivalasagoverningforce willbeseriouslydelayedifthedifferencesbetweenemployersandemployedareallowedtoheal.Acondition ofperpetualwarfaresuitstheiragitation.

InIreland,wheretheveryfoundationsofindustrialenterprisehaveyet to'belaid,therecanbenoeconomic hopeunlessCapitalandLabourare willingtomakeChristianacknowledgementofeachother'srights.Their frequentcontentionsforbidnewindustries.impedeoldbnes,and,paralysesystemsoftraffic.

OnereasonablyexpectsthatIrish workers,nowsopowerfullyorganised, willnotpermittheirhardshipstoalienatethemfromallotherclassesof theirowncountrymen.Suddenstrikes

forinsufficientcausesdealaheavy blowatthewelfareofthewholecommunity.

Theworkerhasmuchtoputup with.Stupidcalumniatorsareeager toshout"Bolshevist!"wheneverhe assertshimself.Therighttostrike isundoubtedlyhis,anditcannotbe deniedtohim.Buthewouldwia considerablygreatersupportfromdetachedvotersinthecomingelection ifhecouldassurethemthatthestrike weaponwouldbemoresparinglyused infuturethanithasbeenoflateyears. Labourasapoliticalenginehas plentyofpositiveandconstructive taskstoengageit.Itcandomuch tomaketheconditionofthetoilers moretolerable.Itcaninsistthatthey shallhavebetterhomes,thattheir positionasregardsageandinfirmity shallbemadesecure,thattheirgirls shallbetaughtpracticalhousekeeping,andthattheirboysshallbegiven atrainingsuchaswillfitthemforan independentlife.Thatprogramme couldberealisedquickly.

Thedemandsofcommonsenseare usuallygrantedintheend.ToIrish workersthestrike-mongeristheprincipaldangerjustnow.Iftheworkerscomebeforetheelectoratewith somefeasibleplanforthesettlement ofeverydaydifficultieswithoutrecoursetostoppage,theywillgain enoughsympathyandaidatthepolls torenderpossibleanearlyandvaluableimprovementintheirlot.-"Irish Rosary."

Witnessalsolaterintroducedthe delegatesfromtheIrishRepublicto Mr.LloydGeorge.Towardstheend ofthenegotiations,witness'srelations withMr.MichaelCollinsandMr.A. Griffithwerestrained,becausehe sawthattheywereheadingforwhat bethoughtadangerouscourse,and thatpeacewouldneverbeachieved bysuchmeans.OnatleasttwooccasionshehadseriouswordswithMr. GriffithandMr.Collinsinreferenceto thatverymatter.

Infurtherevidence,Mr.O'Brien saidhisoppositiontotheTreatywas basedonthefactthatitgaveaway thesovereigntyandunityofthenation.Therewasnothingofamilitarycharacterinthemembershipof theIrishSelf-DeterminationLeague, andnoneofitsfundshadbeensentto IrelandsincetheTreaty.

TheAttorney-Generalbeganhis cross-examinationbyaskingifthe witnessknewtherewasabodyinIrelandunderdeValeratryingtooverthrowtheFreeStateGovernmentby force.

,,,rthitsrubies,sapphires.amaranths. andvariegatedbrilliants.Theflowersandsnrubs-thosefloralgemswith whichaLovingProvidencehasbeautifiedandembroideredthisValeof Tears-lenttheirgracefultraceryand ,resignasmodelsforartisticreproductiononwallandcornice,andallthis wasinanimatenature'stributetothe worshipofNature'sGod.Itwasinanimatenature'sunconsciousresponse tothecommandcontainedinthe text.AndGod'sownchosenpeople pouredintheirofferingsungrudgingly, rejoicingastheScripturesays"when theypromisedtheirofferingswillingly be(ausetheyofferedthemtothe Lord.theirGod,withtheirwhole hearts"Theyrealisedthattheywere obeyingthegreatestandthefirst Commandmentbythuspractically showingthattheloveofGodandseal forGod'sworshiphadthefirstplace in,andthestrongestholdover,their gratefulhearts.Thenfromallquartersoftheglobecameartists.artificers. andskilledcraftsmenthatbythe workofbrainandhandtheymight mouldoutofalltheseglittering materialsaconcreteshrineofincomparablebeauty-thatinthewordsof HolyScripturewastobe"thegloryof Jerusalemandthejoyofallthe earth,"andinthedayofitsdedication,sopleasedwasGodwithHis creatures'tributethatHepromised abundantblessings,anddeclaredthat Hisheartwouldbeinthatglorious shrinealways.

Now.dearbrethren,itisthesame callofFaithanddutythathasimpelledFatherReidyandthepeopleof Katanningtoundertaketheerection ofthishandsomechurchthathasbeen dedicatedtotheworshipandservice ofGodhereto-day.Inarchitectural orartisticexcellence,itcannot,of course.becomparedtotheTempleof Jerusalem:butthischurchwillhave whatthatTemplelacked.Itwillhave thatwhichgivessacrednesstoaCatholicChurch-thatwhichdifferentiatesaCatholicChurchfromallother buildingsofbrickorstone.Itwill havetherealandabidingPresenceof OurLordHimselfintheBlessedSacrament.Thisiswhyitiscalled,and whyitisinreality,theHouseofGod. ItistheHouseinwhichtheIncarnate Goddeignstodwell.HereHispraises willbesung,Hisfaithpreached,His Sacramentsadministered,andthe HolySacrificeoftheMassofferedup. But,aboveall,herewilldwellthe LonelyPrisoneroftheTabernacleOurLordJesusChrist-whosePresenceandgracewillsanctifyand soothe,purifyandstrengthen,the soulsofHissuppliantchildrenindays tocome.

IhavesaidthatinerectingthisChurchthepriestsandpeopleofKatanninghavehearkenedtothecallof faithandduty-haveobeyedtheDiv. inscommandenshrinedinthewords ofmytext.Itistruetherehasbeen achurchhereforthelast30years: butitwassoshatteredandrickety thatitbecameunsafe,sobaldand primitivethatitbecameareproachtotheCatholiccommunityofsucha progressivetownanddistrict.

Inconclusion,theArchbishopmade animpassionedappealforfinancialassistancetoliquidatetheheavydebt onthenewedifice.Theappealdid notfallondeafears,ascanbejudg- edfromtheuniqueresponse.The collectionamountedtothehandsome figueof£1,400.Thelistappearselsewhereinthisissue.

Ifheisapublicmanandhisdigestionisgoodhisheartisopulent,and hedistributeshisemotionswithanextravagancethatcommandstherespectofhisfellow-men.Theafter-dinnerspeechesofourpublicmenare invariablyswollenwithsplendidintentions,whichnevermaterialise,orat leasthardlyever.Acertainhotplaceissaidtobepavedwithsuch things.Oneofthebestexamplesofafter-dinneroratorsandrethorical bubble-blowingwasthelateSirGeorgeHoustonReid.Hewasagood eaterandadelightfulpost-prandialentertainer.Noneknewbetterthan hewhenandhowtoplayuponpublicfeelingandtohandroundthemilk andhoneyofhumankindness.Hepassedhissweetstuffinbig.goldrimmedbowls.orinlittletonysilvercupsjustashisenvironmentwarranted, andhisauditorsdesired.Butthatadmirablecapacitytohumbug,likemost humanthings,staledwithtime,andthebestpublichoodwinkerinour politicalhistory(notevenexceptingSirHenryParkesiwasturneddown induecourseandshelvedasanot-wantedutility.ThetruthistheAustralianpubliclovebeingfooledforawhile.buttheygetveryangrywhen theyhavebeenfooledtoolong.WilliamMorrisHughescanspeaksensitivelyuponthisparticularphaseofAustraliancharacter,butheisprobably awaitinghisopportunitytotestthetemperoftheAustralianpubliconce morebeforeputtingonrecordhisauthenticandnot-to-be-disputedopinion. Thelastgeneralelectionsrelegatedhimintothebackgroundasonewhose politicalbeerwasfartoofrothyforpublicconsumption.Hissuccessor promisedbetterthings,becausehewasanewcoinerfromanunromantic environment,wherepracticaltheoriesdecideuponwhatultimatelymust emergeinsatisfactoryissues.Hewa.,takentothecapaciousheartof publicfavourprimarilyasayoungmanofbusinesscapacityandthoroughness,andanotunpromisingintelligenceforpublicaffairs.JustasMr. StanleyBaldwincreptintotheheartofBritishConservativism,Mr.Bruce creptintotheconfidenceofAustralianConservatism.Hegavepromiseof beingaveryusefulmanatthehelmwhentheshipoftheNationalParty washeadingforchaos.Butuptodateitcanbesaidofhimthathehas notaccomplishedanythingoutofthecommonplacetocheckthedriftin FederalaffairsortoinspirepublicconfidenceinhiscapacitytoliftFederal politicsoutoftheditchintowhichtheyhavebeendrivenbythepolicyof hiseretlecessor.BeinganAustralian,withabroadmindandabiguncompromisingbeliefinthedestinyofthiscountryasaself-governingunit oftheEmpire.heappealedtoAustraliansasanewMosestoleadthemout ofthebondagewhichtheprofiteersandtheexploitershadcreatedduring thewar.Itwasconfidentlyanticipatedhewouldintroduceanewpoliticalmoralityandnewcanonsthatwouldrestore"governmentofthepeople bythepeopleforthepeople."Pressandpublicgavehimagenerousreeeption,but-.Alas!OurFederalPrimeMinisterisjustashumanashis predecessor,andhismethodsasopentocausticcomment.EvenHughes hadn'tthetemeritytoputtheParliamentaryshuttersupandleavethe workofthecountryhunguptotriptoLondononwhatislittlebetterthan aholidayjauntattheexpenseofthepeople.Attheweeklydinnerofthe AdvertisingMen'sClub,ourW.Brucetoldthemembersofthataugust bodythathewasgoingawayonanadvertisinghike."Iamgoingaway," hesaid,"toadvertisethegreatestundevelopedContinent,andagreatpart ofmyworkwillbetomakepeopleappreciatewhate'ivondeigulcountry Australiais,andwhatourpotentialitiesare."Weareasimple-minded people,andonthewholeaverydullpeople.butifthatisthemostimperativereasonforMr.Bruce'stripabroad,wewanttoknowwhyAustraliaHousecostssomuchtomaintaininLondon,andwhyAustraliaispayingaHighCommissionerahighsalarytomakeknownherpotentialities. CanitbethatSirJosephCookisafailureinhisjobandunequaltohis duties?Itmaybeadmittedthatafter-dinnerspeechesshouldnotbetakentooseriously,butaseriousmanlikeMr.Bruce,occupyingthefirst intheCommonwealth,investedasheiswithgreatresponsibilityand highauthority,isnotexpectedtospeakwithlevityandwiththeextravaganceofanordinarycommissionagent.Hethinksthatlifeisfartooeasyin Australia.AvastsectionofAustralianswillchallengehisopinionasan unwarrantedpresumptionandavainconceit.Graduallythestrugglefor existenceisbecomingkeenerandwearedrawingnearertooldworldconditions.IsitMr.Bruce'sdesiretospeduptheconditionsoftoiland strugglefortheAustralianindustrialmultitudeuntilweinthiscountryare facetofacewiththefiercecompetitionwhichprevailsinEurope?That mightbethewisdomofFlindersLanebutitisnotthesentimentofthe greatbulkofAustralians.Themanweimaginedwouldbreatheanew incentiveintopoliticalactivityinFederalpoliticstalkedon'theeveofhis departureforLondonofhismissionwhichistoaddalittlemorethanis

warantedtopublicexpenditureverymuchlikeameretyro.Wehave readsimilarafter-dinnerspeechesfromotherpublicmen,buttheywere spokenonoccasionswhenforthewhiletheywereouttoplayapolitical game.IsisnotallegedagainstthePrimeMinisterofthisimportant Commonwealththathewasplayingapoliticalgame,butitdoesseemthat heisfoolingthepeople.WhatisthisgeneralstocktakingthatMr.Bruce issodesirousofundertakinginorderthatthingsmightbevisualisedin theirtrueperspective?Atleasthemighthaveexpressedhimselfmore explicitlyandwithgreatercandourtotheAdvertisingMen'sClubItis becomingapracticewithourpoliticianstodealintallgeneralitieswhen addressingusuponAustralianneeds.Considerablesumsofmoneyhave alreadybeenspentuponthematterofemigrationandtheproblemoffindingthebestmeansofsettlingAustralia,andstillnothingcommensurate withtheexpenditurehasbeenaccomplished.DoesMr.Bruteimaginethat heissoexceptionallypersuasivethatthefarmersandartisansofEngland willmakethemselvesexilesfromtheircountryonhisipsedixitthatAustraliaisalandofGoshenoverflowingwithmilkandhoneyandhuman kindnessforthem?Weratherimaginetheywillnot.UntiltheGovernmentoftheCommonwealthputsupsomethingrationalandfairtoattract emigrantsfromtheOldCountry,thatwillkeepthemfrombecomingdrugs uponthelabourmarket,itisidleforMr.Brucetotalkof"goingthrough thelengthandbreadthofGreatBritaintotryandawakenthepeopleto realisetosomeextentwhatAustraliarepresents."TheSpeechisadisappointment.

Rovers,fortheCup,wasthefixture forSundaylast.Despitethreatening cloudsduringtheearlypartofthe day,theafternoonturnedoutsunny andbright.Bothteamstookthefield confidentofsuccess,andagoodgame waspredicted.Fromthebounce Roversgotaway,sendingtheleather towardstheirgoals.MartintookpossessionforRoversandbootedstraight. TheFrenchGovernment,initsrecentnegotiationswiththeVatican, hasreachedthepositionwherebyan arrangementbetweenChurchand StatewillbeeffectedwithoutanyformalmodificationoftheLawof1905. ThisistheLawofSeparation,which resultedincuttingofftheChurchfrom theofficiallifeofthenation.While itmightnotbestrictlyaccurateto speakofthenewdevelopmentasa compromise,itisactuallyinthera.tureofacompromise.Theposition takenupbyM.Poincare(andthe Cabinetiswithhim)isthatwhilethe secularisationlawsmuststandasat presentembodiedinthestatutesof France.thereisyetnothinginthose lawsthatareincompatiblewithreligiousfreedomandliberty.'this stateofagreementhasnotbeen reachedwithoutconsiderableobstruction.Theoldanti-clericalpriest-eatinggenerationofFrenchpoliticians stillsurvives,perhapsmoreinthe SenatethanintheChamber.Butits fangshavebeendrawn,andwhatever powerorinfluenceitstillhasisconfinedtoasmall,thoughvociferous, littlebandofdie-hard;.M.Poincare isanythingbutclerical,antihissympathieswiththeChurchandtheCatholicsisnotmuchto:counton.But he,andothers,foundduringthewarthatthefriendshipoftheChurch,of whichthemajorityof Frenehare devotedadherents,:snotathingto bebrushedasidelightly.Therefore, thepolicyofPremierPoincareisone ofconciliation,andinrespectofthat policyhehasamajorityoftheParliamentwithhim.Asaresultofall this,somekindofworkingagreement willbeenteredintobetweentheGovernmentandtheChurch.Church propertywillbeadministeredthrough diocesanassociations.andsomeofthe proscribedreligiousorderswillbeauthorisedbylawtoreturntoFrance fromthosecountrieswheretheyare atpresent,perhapsbetterappreciated thantheyareathome.

ThebeliefthattheBolshevikGovernmentisengagedinasystematic attempttowipeoutreligioninRussia issubstantiatedbythestatementgivenoutinParisbytheGrandDukeAlexanderasanappealtothepeopleof theUnitedStatesformoralsupportfortheRussianpeople.TheGrand Duke'sappealreads:-"Inthename ofGodandChrist,Iappealtothe soulsofallmyspiritualsistersand brothers.Awake.ifsaubelievein GodandChrist.Underyoureyes,in mycountry,Russia,150,000,000souls likeyourswhohavethesameDivine FatherinGodaresufferingagonyin theirstruggleforallthatisholiestof holyforusandfortheirfaith.The tyrannyofgovernmentwhichisinspiredandledbytheforcesofallthat isevil,uglyandhateful,hasdeclared desperateopenwaragainstGodand Christ.Hundredsofthousandsof childrenarebeingbroughtupinpure atheismandhate.andareencouraged toliveinevil,inugliness.andinim-

JudgeGoff,whorecentlyinterviewedMr.HenryFordinreferencetoretaining'hisfactoryatCork,isaGorey man,andwaseducatedattheChristianBrothers'schoolinhisnative town.Wheninhisteenshejoined theFenianmovement.Becominga suspectoftheEnglishGovernment,he wenttoEngland,whereheresidedfor ashortperiod,afterwardsleavingfor NewYork,wherehebecameengaged inalawyer'soffice.Hemadeaclose studyofthelaw,receivedrapidpromotion,andfinallybecameSupreme CourtJudge,whichpostheheldupto hisretirementafewyearsago.Althoughnoweightyyearsofage,he stillevincesgreatinterestinthewelfareofhismotherland,ascanbe gatheredfromhisinterviewwithMr. Ford,whopromisedhimthatevenif heweretorunthefactoryinCorkata loss.hewouldstillkeepitworking,as he.too,hadagreat'wishtoseeIrishmenandthelandofhisforefathers prosperousandcontented.JudgeGoff's onlysonisengagedinthelegalpro- fessioninNewYork.HisQnly daughterenteredaconventandbecameanunafewYearsago.

England'sLoss.

CardinalBourne,atDenabyMain, agrimytown,inSouthYorkshire, whitherhewenttopresideatthe25th anniversaryoftheopeningofSt.Alban'sChurch,inthecourseofhissermon,saidhesupposedthattheordinaryEnglishmanofthepresentday wouldbefoundfullyconvincedon threepoints-thatitwasnormaland naturalforEnglandtobe,separated iron.theauthorityoftheHolySee, thatagreatpartoftheprosperityof EnglandwasboundupwithitsProtestantreligion,andthattherewas somethingun-Englishinrecognising anyauthority-evenAspiritualauthority-notheldbyamemberofthe BritishEmpire.EvenmostCatholics.hesupposed,cametotakeso muchforgranted.Butitcouldbe establishedquiteclearlythatthese threepropositionswerequitewithout foundationinfact.TheonlyChristianityknowinthiscountrybefore theyear15awaswhatwascalled Catholicto-day.Inreferencetothe questionofEngland'sprosperity,lookedatpolitically,itwastruetosay thatEnglandwasmuchmorepowerfulbeforeherseparationfromthe unityofChristendomthanshewastoday.Asforherpositionintellectually.Englandhadsufferedfromthe lossoftheinter-playofintellectupon intellect.ofwhichshewasdeprived bytheProtestantReformation.Now, owingtothewar,inthegreatpolitical questionsto-daythiscountryhadto dealwithcountriesacrosstheChannel.InallthesecountriestheinfluenceoftheCatholicChurchwasvery strong,anditwashardlypossibleto touchanypoliticalquestionwithoutbeingbroughtupagainstthepower

oftheCatholicChurch.HisEminencethoughtittruetosay-thatthe Protestantcharacterofthiscountry hadresultedintheprosperityofthe countrybeingleisthanitwouldhave been;herembracingtheCatholic faithwouldgiveherapositionshe nadnotyetattained.

HilaireBelloc.addressingalarge gatheringintheMansionHouse,Dub- lin,onJune19,afterreturningfroma lecturingtourinAmerica,inthe courseofhisremarks,said:Ofallthe thingsAmericaheldincommonwith Europe,religionwasthemostimport- ant.TheUnitedStatesbeganasa purelyProtestantcommunity,drawn fromDutch.AnglicanandNon-Con- formistsources.Laterfollowedthe PuritansfromEngland,andaltogether therewerethirteendifferentcommunities.Catholicismwasintroducedby theIrish,Italians,andPoles,andhe outlinedthegradualminglingofthese spiritualforces.Butwhat,heasked, werethespiritualforcesatwork? Firstly,governingsociety,themajor influencewasprofoundlyPuritan. Thatwasincreasing.Secondlythere wasscepticism.OutsidetheCatholic bodyandasmall,curious,verydeter.- mined,ratherwealthynucleus.the wholeofAmericawassceptical.It wasbeingsweptbyawaveofsceptic- ismwhich,hebelieved,wasrapidly spreadingoverEngland.TheCatho- licbodyrepresentedtheyknewnot whatnumerically-butcertainlymore thanone-fifthofthepopulationofthe populationoftheUnitedStates.It wasmainlyinthetowns,intheindustrialregions.Itwaslargelyemi- grant,anditdidnotcontrolthetra- ditionalsourcesofpower.Thosewho ownedthegreaterpartofthe'wealth, thosewho,forthemostpart,directed politicsandfinance.werenotinpro- portiontothemagnitudeoftheCa- tholicbodyandwerenotconnected withthatbody.Fromallthesecon- siderationsitseemedtobeinevitable thattherewasgoingtobeaconflictbetweentheCatholicbodyandthe restofthecommunity.Hedidnot sayviolentconflict.Itmightnotbe morethanaconflictoftwospirits- oneofwhichultimatelyabsorbedthe other.
