Dr.RichardRyan,C.M..asBishopof Geraldton,tookplaceatSt.Joseph's Church,Malvern,onSunday,29th.ult., withallthesolemnandimposingritual andmagnificentceremonialwithwhich theChurchsobefittinglyinvestsso great eeremoniesanoccasion.Theimpressive beganat10.30a.m.,but longbeforetheappointedtimeaneagerandexpectantmultitudeawaitedadmittance.sothatshortlyafterthedoorswereopen,therewasnetavacantseatinthechurch,andmanywere standing.Tothesoul-stirringstrains of choir,the"EcceSacerdos,"renderedbythe underthedirectionofDr.Price,theprocession,flankedbyaguardof honourfromtheHibernianSocietyand IrishNationalForesters,andheaded bythecrossbearerandacolytes,enteredthesacrededifice. HisGracetheArchbishop,fullyvest- edinmitreandcope,tookhisseatbeforethecentralaltar,theBishop-electkneelingbeforehim,whiletheRev. FatherT.Quinn(Oakleigh)entered thepulpitandreadaloudtheApostolic Mandate,attheconclusionofwhich theBishop-electtooktheEpiscopal Oath.
Theimpressiveceremonieswerecarefullyfollowedbythecongregation,who hadbeenthoughtfullyprovidedwith copiesofthelengthybutpicturesque riteofconsecration.

Ihavebeenhonouredwithaninvi- tationtoaddressyouonthismost solemnoccasion.Circumstancesde- mandthatIshouldbebriefinmydiscourse,whilstthefearofwoundinghis Lordship'sdeepsenseofhumilityre-
quilesthatIshouldrestrictmyselfin anypersonalreferencestohim.
Dr.Ryan'sEarlyStudiesandLabours. WemaywellbelievethathisLordship'syoungheartwasdrawntowards thealtarbytheexampleofdomestic pietyfoundintheoldhomeindistant Ireland-ahomewherethevoiceof Godwasheardinswetnesscallingto amorespiritualandunearthlylife.His earlystudiesweltmadeinSt.Patrick'sCollege,Armagh,andCastleknock College,Dublin,bothofwhichareunderthedirectionoftheVincentian Fathers.Inbothschools,whiledoing himselfcreditinhisstudies,hehad everyopportunityoftestingthecourageandsincerityofhisaspirationstothepriesthood.HischoiceoftheCongregationoftheMissionasthefieldof hislife'slabourwasnowmade.Having completedtheArtscourseoftheRoyal University,atDublin,heenteredthe VincentianNovitiateandhouseofstudiesatBlackrock.Theearlypromise ofhiscollegedayswasamplyfulfilled intheclear,calmandcomprehensive judgmentthattheyounglevitegave evidenceofinhisclericalstudies.Or. dainedpriestintheyear1907,hewas appointedtothemissionsinAustralia.For16years,inallpartsofthe Commonwealth,hedevotedhisabilitiesandenergiestogivingmissionsand retreats.Fouryearsagohewasap- pointedtotakechargeofSt.Joseph's parish,Malvern,andtobeSuperiorof theHouseofMissions.Inthemidst ofsuchlabours,God'scalltoahigher andmoreexaltedofficecame."Iwill raiseuptoMyselfafaithfulpriest, whoshalldoaccordingtoMyheartand Mysoul,andIwillbuildforhima faithfulhouse,andheshallwalkbeforeMyanointed."(I.Kings,ii..35.)
TheCalltothe,Zpiscopate. Toonewhoselifewashiddenwith ChristinGod,whosemodestywasas sensitiveaseveradornedaChristian, whosehumilityeverurgedhimtolay asideallthatcouldattractattention, whoseidealoflifewastoevangelisethe pooraftertheexampleofSt.Vincent dePaul,thiscalltothedivinetaskof theepiscopatecamewithasuddenness anddirectnessthatwellnighoverwhelmedhim.Wasitforthisthathe hadputontheyokeandfettersof Christ'sservice,thathehadaccepted thoserestraintsofrulesanddutiesso hardandexactingonfleshandblood? Didheeversuspectthatthoseyearsof fruitfulworkinHisMaster'sVineyard werebutthepreparationforthesacrifice?Werethereanyforewarnings thathewasdestinedtobe"awatchmaninthehouseofIsrael?"Nothing couldhavebeenfurtherfromhismind. But,allalongGodwaspreparingHis servant,allalongHewasshapingthe characterofafutureApostle,moulding ahearttodareallforHislove.There wasprayerandcounselandanxiousdeliberation.ThenthesuccessorofSt. Peterspoke:"Bendlowthineearand listen,fortheKingbathchosethee." Startledatthecall,dazedforthemomentinthelightoftheSpirit,the naturalimpulsetoshrinkfromtheawfuldignitygavewaytohumblesubmissiontotheDivineWill.
TheBishop'sPowertoRule.
AndsotheHierarchyestablishedby JesusChristreceivesanothermember: anothermaniscalledasAaronwas: anotherisentrustedwiththecommissiontoteachandtocommand,holding thecharacterofhisauthorityfromthe DivineFounderoftheChurch.For, byDivineRight,theBishopistorule. "Takeheedtoyourself,"saidSt.Paul, "andtothewholeflockwhereinthe HolyGhosthathplacedyourBishoptoruletheChurchofGod."Nocivil powermaydefineinlimithisjurisdic- tion,noStatemayfixtheboundaries ofhispower,noParliamentorCrown warrantdaretouchhisruling.The Church,inclothingheryoungPontiffwiththepurplerobes,inbestowingher pastoralstaff,herrichlygemmedring,andmajesticmitre,bidstheworldrecogniseintheseemblemsofauthority thatherHighPriestspeakswiththevoiceofChrist,theSupremeRuler.Oh!howawful.howawe-inspiring,isthe officeofaBishop.HewieldsthePas- toralStaff,indicatinghistwofoldpow,- ofOrderofJurisdiction-thepowerof Order,bywhichhecanraisetothe priesthoodandtransmittomenthe verysamepowerwhichChristgaveHis Apostles:thepowerofJurisdiction, namely,authoritytoteachandtocom- mand.His"isthestaffoftheshep- herd,whoistofindpasturetofeedhis
flock,whoistoleadandguide,to warnanddefend,hisflockfromdanger. Heistobeforhisflocktheauthoritativeinterpreterofallthatiscontained inthedepositoffaith.Tohimis giventhering,todenotehisspiritual espousalswithhisfutureflock-the ring,tobindhimtohisMaster,Christ, andtohispeople,fillinghimwithhope ofthelifeto'come.Uponhisheadis placedthemitre,anduponhisshoul- derstheBookoftheGospels,tosig- nifytheburdenofhischarge,whichis. tocarrytheKingdomofChristforthe sakeofhisflock,tobethevaliant championoftherevelationofChrist. Itmaynotbeoutofplacetooffer afewwordsofcongratulationtothe priestsandpeopleofthedioceseof Geraldton,whoserepresentativesarepresentatthisfunction,onthechief rulerwhomGodsendsthem.Ifthe virtuesandattainmentsofapriest satisfyhisecclesiasticalauthorities thatheisfitforthehighofficeofthe Episcopate,theymaybesatisfiedthat theworkofthemissionerinAustralia givesapriestthenecessaryexperience of tion.parochialanddiocesanadministraThedetailsofschools,religious bodies.charitableorganisations,social societies--inaword.allthatconcerns theneedsandaspirationsoftheCatholicbody.becomesknowntohiminhis capacityofmissioner.Heenjoysthe confidenceandhasthefavourofthe Bishopandpriestsintheparticular dioceseandparisheswhereheiscalled towork.Theirdevotedlives,their variedandexhaustlesszeal,their splendidself-sacrifice,theirenterprise. theircourageinallundertakingsfor theadvancementofreligion-theseare tohim.inthedaysofhismissionwork, acontinuallessonofpastoralzealand organisation.AndsotheBishopof Geraldtonmayclaimausefulexperi- enceinallthatpertainstothegood orderandgovernmentofadiocese. Therefore,hegoesasnostrangertothe vastfieldofspiritualworkthatawaits hiscoming.Tothepriestsofthat diocesehecomesasonewhohasbeen witnessofthemostsublimezealfor souls,withthegloriousrecordofthe CatholicSisterhoods,toitslaity.as onewhohasknowntheirnobleselfsacrificeandgenerosityinthecauseof holyfaith.Andintime,whenhisachievementscometobemeasured,we maywellbelievetheseshallnotbeunworthyofthetraditionofthegreat andzealousprelatewhoprecededhim, andofhispreciouslegacyofapostolic labourandheroicself-sacrifice.

IngivinghisLordshipthetime-honouredsaluteoftheChurch,"AdMultos Annos!"weallpraythattheGreat ChiefPastormayblesshimwithlight inallhisdeliberations,wisdominhis counsels.strengthandfortitudeinall difficulties.Hemustnowrelinquish thelifeofthecommunitytowhichhe hadpledgedhislabours,andthecompanionshipofhisfellow-priestsofthe CongregationoftheMission,wholovedhissincereandmanlycharacter.He mustpartwiththepeopleofMalvern, whoseesteemhehadwonbydevotion todutyandhispriestlyexample.He mustbidfarewelltothenoble-hearted prelatesandpriestsofthisArchdioceseofMelbourne,atwhosehandshe receivedsomanyfavours.MyLord Bishop,thecallhascomeforthegreat sacrifice.Youwillnotshirktheburden."Evangelizarepauperihusmisit meDominus."RightlyhaveyouretainedonthecrestofyourEpiscopal officethelegendofSt.Vincentde Paul.TheGoodShepherdlaysdown hislifeforhissheep.Thishedoes, asarule,inthelifelongstruggleof duty,inorderthathispeoplemay savetheirsouls.Lonelydaysand nightsandwearyjourneys,hislifeisa duty,andhewilldareit. Yes,myLord.youbecomeinthe vastspacesofyourfoldthetrackerof souls,tobringthegraceofreconciliationtoall.YourlifeisnowaceaselessandabsoluteoblationtoGod.The greatUnseenPresencemust'now,more thanever,bethemainspringofyour life.Courage,then.thewiderangeof yourapostolatewillbutfeedthepas- sionthatburnswithinyoutomake morefruitfulandbeautifulthefield-oftheharvest.Courage,eventhough difficultiescomeandaccumulate,the
heart-stirringwordsoftheGreatApos- tleareyours:"Noneofthesethings moveme,neithercountImylifedear untomyself,sothatImayfinishmy coursewithjoy,andtheministrywhich IhavereceivedoftheLordJesus,to testifythegospelofthegraceofGod." Courage,youhavethepromiseofGod's abidingefficaciousgrace.Withyou aretheprayersandgoodwishesofthe augustprelateswhohavehavestood byyouto-day,andofthepriestsand peoplewhohaxewitnessedyoursolemnanointing.Withyouarethe prayersofthechildrenofSt.Vincent dePaul.scatteredinmanylands,that hisspiritmayabidewithyou.With youaretheprayersofthechildrenof St.Patrick,inyourownnativeland, thatthemissionaryzealoftheIrish saintsmaybeyours.Maythelove ofOurLordintheBlessedSacrament, andofMary,HisMother,ofSt.Joseph, St.Vincent,St.Patrick,beyourdaily support,andintheendmayGodbe yourrestandyourreward-Amen.

Inancienttimesitwastheseatof theDownesfamily,andsubsequently ofLordBarrymore.Amongpeople living:nthelocality,WardleyHallis knownasthe"SkullHouse,"foritis aboutthevenerablerelicofoneof Catholicity'schiefmartyrsinEngland thatthestrangemanifestationshave centred.
Theskull,whichreposesinaniche inthestaircasewall,isthatofEdward AmbroseBarlow,monkoftheHoly OrderofSt.Benedict,Whoshedhis bloodfortheFaithatLancasteron September10th.1641.
Itissaidthatiftherelicismoved fromtheniche,strangesoundsare heardatnight,andthattheinhabitantshavenopeaceuntilitisrestored toitsplace.Ononeoccasionanattemptwasmadetoburythehead,but inaterrificstormofthunderand lightning,itbetookitselftoitsplace inthestaircasewall.Ifanythingwas donetotheskull,oritwasnottreaterwithproperrespect,suchcommotionsaroseaboutthehouse,thatno daredliveinit.
VengeanceonPersecutors.
TheLancashireantiquarian,Mr. Roby,whowasazealousdefenderof Protestantism,testifiedtothefactthat theskullneverfailedtopunishtheindividualwholaidhandsonit.AccordingtoMr.Roby,severalyoung menfromManchesteroncevisitedthe Hall,andoneofthemthoughthe wouldtry,unobserved,to.ascertainthe truthofthestorieshehadheard.For thispurposeheprivatelyremovedthe skulltoanothersituation.Onthe followingnight,suchahurricanearose thatmanytreeswereblowndown.The tenantsfoundtheskull,andafterthey hadreplaceditinitsnichethestorm abated.
Theskullhasbeenriveninpieces andburnt,buteveronthesubsequent dayitisseenfillingitswontedplace, andithasalwaysbeenobservedthat somevengeancealightedonitspersecutors.Onewhostruckitinpieces wasseizedwithsuchhorribletorments thatitseemedasifhewasbeing scourged.
RaidingJacobites.
In1745,whentheJacobitesmarched alongWardleyLaneontheirreturn totheNorth,adetachmentvisitedthe Halltodemandcartsfortransport purposes.
ThefamilythenoccupyingtheHall weresoimpoverishedinaccedingto thedemandoftherebelsthattheydeterminedtotakeuphandloomweavingtoretrievetheirfortune.Matthew Moreton,theheadofthefamily,causedtobepulleddownasomewhatruinouspartofthebuildinginorderto makeroomforthelooms:Asthe workofdemolitionwasproceedinga chestfelloutoftheruins,andonbeing openedwasfoundtocontainaskull havingafinesetofteethandagood dealofauburnhair.
Thesamedayamaidservantofthe Moretons,notknowinganythingabout theskull.mistookitfortheheadofan animal,andthrewitintothemoat. Thesamenighttherewasafurious storm,andMoreton,beingsuperstitious.causedthewaterofthemoatto herunoff,recoveredtheskull,andrestewedittoitsplacp.

EdwardBarlowwenttoDouai,and thentotheEnglishCollegeatValladolid.in1610. Hemadehissolemn vowsasaBenedictinemonkin1615, andwasordainedpriestin1617.He wassenttolabourontheEnglishmission,andspentthelasttwenty-four yearsofhislifeinLancashire.
OnMarch7,1641,aRoyalDecree orderedallprieststoleavetheUnited Kingdomwithinthespaceofonecalendarmonthonpailofdeath.
Thecircumstanceswhichledtothe deathofBlessedAmbroseareasfollow:OnEasterDay,Apr;125th.there wasalargegatherirfgofmembersof theEstablishedreligionintheoldparishchurch.Thevicar,theRev.James Gatley.determinedtocelebratethe feastbystrikingablowagainstthe Catholics.Hethereforesuggestedto hiscongregationthattheyshouldomit theusualserviceandproceedtoMorleyHallandapprehendBarlow.The vicar'sfollowers,about1,400innumber,armedwithclubsandswords,followedtheparsontoMorleyHall. wherethemartyrwasdeliveringan exhortationonthesubjectof"Patience."Therewereaboutottehundred peoplegatheredbeforethealtar,end, despitetheentreatiesoftheworshippers,thepriestrefusedtotakeshelter. PietyandFortitude.
Immediatelyafterwardsthemob rushedin,crying,"WhereisBarlow?" Theheroicpriestwascarriedoff,and, afterbeingexaminedbyaJusticeof thePeace,hewassenttoLancaster Gaol.OntheFeastoftheNativityof OurBlessedLadyhewassentencedto death,andwasledouttodieonSeptember10th,1641. Hesufferedwith greatfortitude.
Inaccordancewiththebarbarous customofthetime,hewashanged, dismembered,disembowelled,quarteredandboiledintar.Atthattimehe wasinthefifty-fifthyearofhisage. HisheadwasrescuedbyFrancisDownes.ofWardleyHall,andsincethe eighteenthcenturyithasbeenenshrinedinthemannerdescribed.
Arepresentativeofanewspaperwho visitedtheHallwasinformedbythe occupantthatonnopretextwhatever wouldpermissionbegivenforremoval oftheskullfromitspresentpositionin thecavityabovethestaircase.

Conclusion. Whatcansuchacourseofmoral trainingteach?Canitproducecharacter?Theanswerisobvious.The policyisanadmittedfailure.Morals
mustrelyonprinciples,principlesmust restonsanctions,andsanctionsare foundonlyinthebeliefofaLivingand PersonalGod,toWhomanaccount mustberendered.Wemust,therefore, concludethatmoralitycannotbe taughtwithoutthosesanctionswhich religionalonegives.Furthermore, suchaneducationcannotproduce character,becauseitdoesnotpossess theessenceofcharacterwhichismorality,onwhichthoseprinciplesmust restwhicharetodominatelife.ExpertFrancehasfailed.Itisnotrash toinferthatanyothercountrywillfail also.
TheGodlessSchoolisInferior.
Iclaimtohaveansweredthequestion.Thedenominationalschoolgives thebettereducation,becauseitpossessesthewell-springsofhumanconduct-GodandHissanctions.The childrenofthisschoolhaveatraining whichgivesthemgreathelpsandincentives'tobecomebettercitizensof thecountrythanthosetrainedinthe Godlessschool.Theircharactersare betterformed,becausethereismoreappealtoGodinthetraining.Therefore,I conclude,thatfromthepointofview ofthecountry,adenominationalsystemyieldsbetterresultsthanthesecularschool.Thereligiousschoolnot onlydevelopsthewholeman,but mouldsareligiouspeople.Opponents ofCatholicschoolscallsthem."FeedersfortheChurch."Otherdenominationswhotakethebestinterestsof theirchurchatheartshouldtakeparticularnoticeofthisphaseoftheCatholicschool,thefosteringofareligiousspirit,becausetheperpetuationof freeGovernmentrestsuponareligious people.AmbassadorBoyce.ofU.S.A.. saidrecently:"Historytellsusthat hithertocivilisedsocietyhasrestedon religion,andthatfreegovernmenthas prosperedbestamongreligiouspeople."
Religionisthefoundationuponwhich thesocialedificerests.Disturbthe foundationanddownwillcomethe wholestructureofhumansociety:beliefinGod'ssovereigntyinourdutyto ourneighbour,inconjugalfidelity,in faithfulobservanceoftheoathofpublicoffice:inaword,thenaturaland supernaturalvirtuesdie.
Religionisthebulwarkoffreedom. theoneessentialfactorinthelifeof ourcountry.AsourConstitutionis democratic,itderivesitspowerfrom thepeoplewhoenjoyuniversalsuffrage.Itslifedependsonavirtuous citizenship.
TheViewofGeorgeWashington.
Henceitisimperativethatreligion andmoralitybemadepartofoureducationalsystem,elsewewillultimatelydestroythroughlegislationourwhole moralfabric,thefoundationofthe Government.Thisisnoidlefancy. Peoplecalledthemselvesbynames "But,"beproceeded."wesaytothem, Callyourselveswhatyouwill.butyou willnotbuildyourcountrybydestroyingit.Wehavepeopleto-day whodonotagreewiththeIrishpeo pleandwhoadoptthemethodofdestroyingthecountryinordertosave it.Wehavepeoplewhocometous andsay.'WhynottalkagainstEnglandinyourspeeches?'andthos;are Ispeoplewhostylethemselvesasofconstructivemindsandwhodisagreewith thedestructionists.WesaytheEng- lishmaninEnglandtodayhasnomore controloverthematerialresourcesof England,hehasnomorepowertoorderhisdailylifeandmakehissopin- ionslawthanhastheIrishmanstandinghereinIreland.andtheIrishman inIrelandto-dayhasnolesspowerover hiscountryandoverthemakingofhis country'slawsthanhastheEnglishmanoverEngland.Wearenotgo- ingtoallowanyone,Joshua-like,to standthesunintheheavensin1798 andsay,youcannotmovefurtherfor wardoryoucannotmovefarther back."

HereferredtotheVolunteerreview inthesamespotin1915.andsaidnow therewasnoshadowoftheauthority ofthestrangeraboutthem.They werestillsoldiersaridlookedtoTone
againfortheirmottoandtheirguidance,andtheyfoundthathesaid: "Thosewhodonotrespectthelibertiesofothersshallnotbetruedefendersoftheirown."Theywerethere thedefendersoftheircountry's'liberties.andwouldputthestampofde fendersonthemselvesandtheiractionsbymakingitplainineveryword andactionoftheirsthattheyrespect thelibertiesofothers.Ingoingback theyweregoingtodevelopthatspirit andatmospherethatwillbethetrue spiritofdefendersoftheircountry.

Thefollowinginformationinconnectionwiththecostandworkofthe DepartmentofExternalAffairswas giveninDailEireannrecentlyduring thedebateontheEstimates.whenthe item"ExternalAffairs.f40.552."came upfordiscussion.
Mr.(SayanDuffyraisedthequestion. "IstheDepartmentofExternalAffairsjustifyingitsexistence?"and stronglycriticisedthedepartmentfor inactivityincertainimportantmatters.Withallthecharityonecould muster.hesaid,hehadto,askhimself whetherthatDepartmentwasnotvery muchmorethanthemostunsatisfac torypublicitydepartmentoftheLocal Government.Heaskedwhatvalue theyweregettingfor£60,000.and whetherintruthandinfactthisparticularestimatewasnotintendedtobe acomicrelieftotheestimates.Their representativeinItalyhadgoneoutof businessaltogether.andtheirrepresentativeinSpainhadbeenscrapped. Althoughtheremightbetheshadow ofrepresentationinBerlin.itmightas wellnotexist.Hefoundthatin Paristheintendeddevelopmentshad notmatured.Hedidnotseeany quantityofdatainthePressfrom theirconsulatesabroadfortheinformationofthepeopleinIreland.and theMinistrydidnotseemtothinkit necessarytogivethecountrythebenefitofthevaluableinformationthey hadnodoubtreceivedfromtheirrepresentatives.

Onemightthinkthatinviewofthe termsoftheTreatyassimilatingtheir positiontothatofCanadaoneofthe firstthingstheywoulddowouldheto appointarepresentativeinOttawa.It wasdifficultfromtheestimatesand databeforethemtoseewheretheyweregettingvaluefortheir£60,000.In goingthroughtheestimateshefailed toseeanydirectioninwhichtheyhad exploredanynewavenueorintended todosointhecomingtwelvemonths.
Howmanyandwhatforeignpowers nowgavethemofficialrecognition,and howmanyofthesepowershadsince theTreatysentrepresentativestothem?TheyhadseenwhereanIrishmanwhointendedtotourtheworld in,hisyachtcouldnotsailunderthe Irishflag,andhesaidthatwasthe faultoftheMinisterforForeignAffairs.Itseemedstrangetohim(Mr. Duffy)thatafterallthistimeanIrish vesselcouldnotsailtheworldunder herownflag.InthatparticularDe partmenttheyhadtriumphantlyexhibitedthepolicyoftheMinistryinregrdtoBritain-thepolicyof"Yes,if yousayso."Theirforeignaffairs wouldbecomeexternalaffairs.Other countriessenttheirdistinguishedmen ofletterstoestablishcontactwithforeigncountries,andthatwasappreciatedbythosecountriesinmakingfriendships.InIrelandtheyhadplentyof distinguishedmenwhocouldactin thatcapacity,buthefailedtofindin theestimatesanyprovisionforcarryingoutsuchaplan.Theprovisioii madefortheirrepresentativestoenter intotheordinarynormalhospitalityanddiplomaticlifeofthecountriesto whichtheyweresentwasinadequate. Hewouldliketoseeprovisionforan IrishCommissionbeingsenttoCanada andSouthAfrica.astheirproblems wereourproblems.

Theywouldreestablishthisofficeas soonastheyfelttheycouldgetvalue fortheexpenditureinvolved.They badaveryablerepresentativeinSpain. whoreportedthathethoughttheoffice coulddonousefulworkasSpainhad noforeignpolicy.Withregardto Berlin,theyhadanofficetherewhich, hewasadvised,wasdoinggoodwork. Atthesametimehewasgoingtorecasttheoffice.Theyregardedtheir departmentfromautilitarianpointof view.Theywerenotanxioustohave elaborateembassiesinforeigncoun- trieswheretheirrepresentativescould spendmoneyentertainingpople.They onlywantedrepresentativesabroad whocouldgivevaluefortheirmoney.
Theyhadnotifiedtheiremergenceto America,France.andothercountries, andhethoughttherepliesfromthese countrieshadbeenpublishedinthe Press.Theirofficialsabroadwere mostlyrecognisedastemporary,and theGovernmentsofthecountriesin whichtheylivedhadbeennotifiedof theirexistenceandthefunctionsthey werefulfilling.
InregardtothematteroftheensignandtheIrishflagnotbeingable tobeflowninforeignwaters,thatwas amatter,hethought.fortheintroduc-
IrishPassportsSoon, Mr.DesmondFitzgerald,Ministerfor ExternalAffairs,saidthisdepartment beganafewmonthsagowithoutany foreignaffairs,butwithacertainnum-
tionofaBillintheDailbytheMinistryofIndustryandCommerce.He believedthataBillwouldbeintro. ducect.

Afewmonthsagothepupilsofthe aboveCollegelearnedthatalongstandingwant-thatofmusicroomswasabouttoberealised,andtheyconceivedtheplanofgettingupachildren'sbazaar,inordertomaketheir feast-daytotheMotherPrioress-inofferingtowardstheexpense.They wentquietlyaboutthework,andsoon theaffairpromisedtobecomesomewhatgreaterthanwasatfirstanticipated.Giftsofalldescriptionsflowedin fromallsides-parents,friendsand well-wishers,andthemid-winterholidaysattheendofJunegavethema grandchanceofworkingandcollecting.
