SherlockHolmesstandsbeforelarge audiences,andclaimsthatcertain thingsmustbecreditedtospiritism. simplybecausehecannototherwiseexplainthem.FatherBrowncomes alongandshowspeoplehowveryordin.arythemostextraordinaryillusions are.

SherlockHolmeswillproduce,forinstance,apictureofaseanceca,binetin whichheseesfourhands.Heknows thatonlyonepersonwentintothe zabinet,andthatthatpersonhadonly twohands.Thereforetheothertwo kindsmustbespirithands.

"Notnecessarily,"murmursFather Brown."Whereyouprofessionaldetectivesgowrongisinsupposingthat becauseathinghasrivefingersitmust necessarilybeahand.Otherthings Piavefivefingers,buttheyarenot hands.Gloves,forexample.This, whichyouthinkisahand,isaglove. Andtheseobservationsaresoobviouslycorrecttoanyonewhodoesnot examine"spiritphotographs"witha predeterminedopinionastotheir genuineness,thatthedeceptionis showntobechildishinitssimplicity, andpeoplelaughattheridiculousness ofthewholebusiness.

AtmosphereofTrust.

Ofcourse,SirArthurConantDoyleis tenons.Andthisisnotsurprising, fartheexpositionisbeingdoneso neatlyandconvincingly.Whenaman *dressesanaudienceonspiritismhe demandstheir"sympathy"beforehe startstheperformance,andwhenpeopleareshowninadvancehoweasyit istoimposeuponthem,theyareinclinedtogetanalytical.Andwhen anAmericanaudiencebecomesanalytical,aspiritisticlecturerfindsitmuch morecomfortabletomovetothenext sown. Itwouldbewrong-toconveytheimpressionthatDoyleisnotgettinga hearing.Therearealwayssufficient peopleinterestedinadiscussionofthe mysterious,andinthepersonalityofa manofDoyle'sformerattainments,to fillahall.Butwhenthenewspapers givetheothersideofthestory(the sidewhichFatherdeHerediaprescuts),theatmosphereoftrustand quiescencesomehowdisappears,and theplaceisnotsopleasantforanyone whosesystemissodelicatelyandmarvellouslytunedasitthatofaspiritist.

GreekMeetsGreek.

FatherdeHeredia,S.J.,whoisconstantlydroppingspokesinSirArthur's wheel,isaMexican,nowteaching SpanishatHolyCrossUniversity,Worcester,Mass.Fromhisyouthhehas interestedhimself,intheartofmagic. Accordingtoaforewordtohisbook -SpiritismandCommonSense"),his Estherbuiltaprivatetheatreforhis boys.WheneveranaccomplishedperformercametoMexicohewouldbe askedtogiveaperformanceinthe boys'theatre,andoneoftheconjurer'simpressedthefathersoforcibly thatheArrangedwithhimtoteachthe boyshisart.

whethertheshriekingwasdesignedor tortuitous,thenewspapersmadea graphicstoryoftheincident,andthe publicwasreadytohearmoreabout "spiritphotography."

FatherdeHerediadecidedtogive peoplealltheywantedonthesubject. Forsomeyearshehadusedaningeniousdeviceintheproductionof"spirit photographs,"andhadkepthissecret.

Nowhedecidedtoshowthepublic howeasilythesethingscanbefaked, evenundertestconditions.Hewent totheofficeofaNewYorkpaper,and thereproducedsome"spiritphotographs"infrontofthephotographers, whocouldnotdetecthowitwasdone.

Threeofthemwerereadytodeclare thatFatherdeHerediadidnotatany timeapproachwithinthreefeetofthe plates.Yetthe"spirits"madeanimpressiononthem.

Thenanotherexperimentwastried, thistimeintheofficeofthe"Scientific American,"oneoftheeditorsofwhich (Mr.J.MalcolmBird)accompaniedSir ArthurtoEuropeandcamebackconvincedofthespiritisticrealityofmuch thathesawatseances.Hewasconvinced,also,thatsomeofthe"spirit photographs"takeninEnglandwere unquestionablythegenuinearticle. FatherdeHerediaofferedtomake "spiritphotographs"underthesame conditionsasthoseimposeduponthe producersofthepicturesinEngland.

Thetestattheofficeofthe"ScientificAmerican"wascarriedoutona platesuppliedbythatperiodical,exposedinitsowncamera,developedby itsownphotographersusingitsown chemicals,withFatherdeHerediacontinuallyunderobservation.Furthermore,theplate.wasinitialledbyseveralwitnessesasasafeguardagainst possiblesubstitution.Amongstthose presentatthetestwasMr.J.Malcolm Bird.Iunderstandthathefailedto seeanypossibilityofdeception,and thathewasverymuchastonished whenthereappearedonaphotograph ofhimselfandothersapictureofAdmiralBeatty.Itwasnotaperfect pictureoftheAdmiral,anditappearedsideways.Butthe"marveltothe onlookerswasthatitappearedatall.

RowtheTrickisDone.

FatherdeHerediahasshownme howthetrickwasdone,andhowseveralother"spiritisticphenomena"are produced.Iamatlibertytodisclose theparticulartrickoftheso-called spiritphotographs.Itisverychildish,andspiritistswill,ofcourse,laugh atit.Asufficientanswertothemis thefactthattheyhavebeendeceived byit.

ItookFatherde.Herediatotheoffice ofanothernationalmagazine,inthe photographicdepartmentofwhichhe consentedtodemonstratethemethod bywhichhehastrickedphotographers andothersforyears-themethodby whichhehasdeceivednewspaper photographersinNewYork,Chicago, andmanyothercities.

"spiritphotographs"canbefaked,Ind isonlyoneofthemanytricksat FatherdeHeredia'scommand. Ofcourse,SirArthurConanDoyle couldnotbeexpectedtobecomplimentaryaboutthephotographswhich arethusfaked.Asspecimensof photographythepicturesreproduced inhisbook."TheComingoftheFairies,"aremuchmoremeritorious, though,asexamplesof"spiritphotography."theyareequallyridiculous. Doylehasatnotimeshownadispositiontoshowercomplimentsupon FatherdeHeredia,oreventopayhim thecourtesiesduefromonegentleman toanother.TheJesuitsentDoylea copyofhisbook.in.aseriousattempt toshowthatthereareseveralwaysof regarding"spiritisticphenomena.The receiptofthebookwasacknowledged asfollows:-

"DearSir,-Itis"Spiritualism," not"Spiritism."Ifyousaw"Popery"onthecoverofabookyou wouldknowitwasanickname,and thatanill-manneredmanhadwrittenit.Wefeelthesame,soIfear Icannotgetpastyourcover."Yoursfaithfully,AConanDoyle.

Inspite.ofhisfear,however.Doyle seemstohavegotpastthecover,or elsehedenouncedthebookintheabsenceofareading.Atanyrate,he misquotedit.forhesaidinNewYork thatFatherdeHerediaregardedall psychicaldemonstrationsasparlour tricks.Hedoesnothingofthesort. Severaltimesthepriesthastriedto meetDoyleinafriendlyway,inthe hopeofbeingabletoshowhimthe possibilityofdeception.Afterseveralvainattemptshereceivedanote inwhichSirArthursaidtheywere veryfarapartonthesubject,and coulddifferbetteratadistance.

RidiculetheTestofTruth.

FatherdeHerediamakesnocharges ofinsincerityagainstSirArthur.He justthinksheisbeingfooled.And hesaysitiseasiertofoolascientific manbysimpletricksthanitistofool achild.Hedoesnotliketoperform beforechildren."Theycatchme everytime,".hesays.

InmypresenceFatherdeHeredia convincedadistinguishededitorofthe realityofmind-reading.Itwasata privatedemonstration.Theeditor wasaskedtowriteaquestionona pieceofstoutpaper.Thepaperwas giventothepriestfacedownwardsand placedinanenvelope,whichwassealed.Hedidthecustomarycamouflageofurgingtheeditortoconcentrateuponhisquestion;thenheheld theenvelopetohisheadforafew seconds,endplaceditonatablewithinsight.Thepriestseemedtolose himselfinvision."Youarethinking oftheweather,"hesaiddreamily."You arethinkingofto-morrow.Youare askingifitwillrainto-morrow.Yes, itwillrainto-morrow."

Atthisparticularmoment,Fatherde Herediaisspecialisingin"spiritphotography."Thenecessityarosewhen SrArthurConanDoylegavegreatprominencetothesubjectinanaddress inNewYorkshortlyafterhisreturn totheUnitedStates.Withgreatartisteheexhibitedasaclimaxtohis lectureaphotographwhichhedescribedasthegreatestspiritpictureever taken.Itpurportedtoshowahost ofsoldierspiritshoveringaroundthe CenotaphinWhitehall,London,onArmisticeDay.

ShriekingtoOrder.

Precisetechnicaldetailsoftheexposureweregiven,anditwasshown bowitwasnecessarytoplantspiritists amongthecrowninordertobringthe requiredinfluencestobearuponthe matter.Thepicturecarriedtheaudi. encebystorm.Womenshrieked. Per'hapsthesewerealsoplanted.But

Amonghisequipmentthepriestcormsanassortmentofpicturesspecially treatedwithacoating.ofluminous paint,picturesofallsorts,andsuitable foranyoccasion.Oneofthesepicturesthustreatedwillmakealight impressiononaphotographicplateIn asecondorlessoftimewhenbrought facetofacewithitinadarkroom. FatherdeHerediapalmsoneofthese pictures,andwhenaplateisproduced forhisinspectionunder"testconditions."hecontrivestofindawayof restinghishandontheplateforan instant.The"spirit"istherebyimpressedupontheplate,andthepriest willthenconsenttobeboundhand andfoot.forhedoesnotneedtotake anyfurtherpartintheperformance.

Theactionofbringingtheluminous pictureintocontactwiththeplate canbedonesocasuallybyaperformer ofFatherdeHeredia'saccomplish. mentsthatthewitnessesarealmostinvariablypreparedtomaintainthathe doesnottouchtheplate.Whenhe doesnotknowwhichwaytheplateis tobeinsertedinthecamera--as,for instance,whentestconditionsareapplied-thereisanevenchancethatthe "spirit"willapeparsideways,anda one-in-fourchanceofitsappearingupsidedown.

"SherlockHolmes"Cornered. Aftercontactwiththeluminousplcture,theplateisexposedintheordinanyway,andthe"spirit"appearssuper-imposedonthephobegraph.When thetrickisdoneatleisure,veryconvincingresultsareobtainedfroma carefullypreparedoriginal.Thisis merelyoneofseveralwaysinwhich

Theeditorwasastounded,andwas quitesatisfiedthathismindhadbeen read.Hedidnotknowthesimple methodbywhichpaper(andtherefore theenvelopewhichcontainedhisquestion)couldberenderedtemporarily transparent.

FatherdeHeredia'sworkisuseful, for,asMr.ArthurBrisbane,Hearst's populareditorialwriter,saysofit, "Ridiculeisthebestcureforallfoolishness."

TheJesuitgavetwoexhibitionsbeforetheex-Delegate,CardinalBonzano,whoafterwardswroteinpraise ofthe"goodthatsuchconferenceswill undoubtedlyproduce.Letusalways," hesaid,"openmoreandmoretheeyes ofthepublic,especiallyCatholics,to thedangersofspiritism,makingthem realiseatthesametimethatmany phenomenaattributedtoamysterious andoccultcausearereducibletoclever trickery."

Whenthingswereworkingaswell astheywere,why,heasked,should theyintroduceaboneofcontention withregardtotheseappointments?

Theseconddivisioninthehistory oftheBelfastParliamentwaschallengedwhentheEducationBillwas consideredontheReportstage.

AconsiderablenumberofamendmentsproposedbyMr.McKeown,ParliamentarySecretarytotheMinistryof Education,wereadopted.Onthe considerationofanamendmentproposedbytheGovernmentregarding theconstitutionoftheregionalcounies,ProfessorJohnstoneexpressed theopinionthattheMinistryshould havepowertonominateafewmembers.Thiswouldenablethemto haveontheCommitteepersonsdeeply interestedineducationwhowerenot connectedwiththeCo.Council.

TheMarquisofLondonderrysaidhe feltthatthepowersoftheMinistry wereampleinsafeguardingthecommunity.butSirR.Andersonheldthat theGovernmenthadchangedtheir mindsincetheCommitteestage.'If thesuggestionmadeby'Professor Johnstonewasagreedto,itwouldgive protectiontominorities.no-natter whothoseminoritiesrepresented.

Thethirdannualballandreunionof thepastboardersofSt.Joseph'sConvent,Fremantle,tookplaceonJuly 21st,anditwasamostdecidedsuccess.Formanyweekstheenergetic Sisterswereuntiringintheirefforts tomaketheeventsuchaswouldrenderthememoryofitoneofthemost pleasantreminiscencesofSt.Joseph's. Inresponsetothe(numerousinvitationsissued,replieswerereceivedfrom themostdistantpartsoftheState, andasaresulteverycornerofthe GoldenWestwasrepresented-from BroometoAlbany,fromMeekatharra toBunbury,andfromvariousintermediatestationsandthemetropolitan area.Severalofthepaststudents whowerecontinuingtheirstudiesin theEastsenttheirbestreunionwishes. Henceitwasthatalargeassemblyof girl'smetattheirAlmaMateronSaturdayevening.Thelargedininghall wasbeautifullydecoratedandillumined,andradiatingfromthecentralpillar,blueandwhitestreamersreached toallpartsoftheroom,onthewalls ofwhichwereengraveninsilverthe lettersS.M..whilethewords,"A ThousandWelcomes"adornedtheoppositewall.Conspicuousamongthe variousdecorationsweretheCollege colours,blueandwhite,whilewattle, fernsandpalmsweremostprofusely andartisticallyarranged.At6.30high teawasserved,priortowhich,however.theseniorgirl,inashortspeech, welcomedthevisitorsonbehalfofthe presentboarders.TheCollegeanthem."MemoriesofSt.Joseph,"was thensung,andtheusualtoastshonoured.Attheconclusionofthesumptuous:banquet,anadjournmentwas madeto.theball-room,whichwasa veritablefairylandwithitsmulticolouredlightsandstreamers.Punctuallyateighto'clocktheGrand Marchcommenced,andfromthence tilleleveno'clockdancingwasindulgedin.TheprizefortheluckynumberwaswonbyMissMaryWard,who re:eivedabeautifullyboundprayer.

Theslavery.clausesoftheBritish ArmyActareputonthedissecting tahlebythewriter,whosays:-"In someofitsmanyphasesitisreminiscentofthedayswhenthesoldierwas apoorwretch,draggedtothemilitary barracksbythepress-gang,oranoutcastwhowasrecruitedfromEnglish prisons.Itispermeatedwithdistinctionsofclassandprivilegehatefultoa free-horncitizensoldiery.Duringthe lastwaritspartialoperationonthe battlefrontswasmadepossibleinthe caseofcitizensoldiersfromtheDominionsthroughaspecialarrangement thatitsprovisionsofthedeathpenalty formanykindsofmilitaryoffences shouldnotheapplicable.Thesebrutalold-worldmilitarylawsarenotfor thepeopleofarealdemocracy.Itis noexaggerationtosaythatifBritish ArmyActsaretobefastenedupon Australians,becauseofthecheapImperialism,ignoranceorlazinessofAustralianMinisters,thegrowthofareasonableAustraliansystemofdefence willbechokedinitsbeginnings.Beforedefencescanexistinacountry likethis,theymustbeapprovedand supportedbypublicopinion.Without that'backingtheywillhopelesslyfail. Thepublicislefttospeculate,too, whetherthisprecedentofmakingAustralianssubjecttothelawsofanother countryistostopwithmattersofdefence.DoestheBruceGovernment proposeageneralstepbackwerd?

Wehavereachedanotherstepinthe answertoourquestion:Whichyields thebetterresults,thesecularorthe denominationalschool?Wehave agreedthatcharacteristhechiefoutputthatawiseStateexpectsfromher schoolsWemaydefinecharacter"as lifedominatedbyprinciples."Now, callthesecularschool,whichexcludes astudyofGodandreligion,teach thoseprincipleswhicharetobethe guidinglightsthroughoutlife.better thanthedenominationalschool,which seesthoseprinciplesinthesystematic studyofitscreed?Thisquestionis equallyapplicabletoalldenominationswhogiveareligiouseducationin theirschools.Theansweristhat suchisnotpossible,andconsequently thedenominationalschoolhasadvantagesfortrainingcharacterwhichthe saecularschooldeniesitself.Tosupportthisview,letmepointtofacts asthemostconvincingargument.

ThecabledreportofPresidentCosgravc'sthreatdeliveredtotheopponentsoftheFreeStatefromaplatformatMonoghan,whereOrangemenand FreeStatersfraternised"forthefirsttune,"willnotbereceivedwithgreat eclatbythescatteredGael.Tousitappearsbombastic,andisboundtobe resentedbyalargesectionoftheyouthofIreland.whofoughttheirfight andwerebeatenonthefield.Itcertainlywillnotallaythatsoreness whichstillprevailsintheheartsoftheyoungunreconciledspiritsofthe Irishnation.Toofferanamnestytotheinsurgentswithonehandandto threatenthemwithaloadedpistolintheother,issurelyaqueermethodof reconciliation.ItmightbethatMr.Cosgravetrimmedhisamnestyoffertc catchthesupportofhisOrangefriends,butwhileweapplaudeveryeffort madebytheSaorstattouniteNorthandSouth,weseenogoocireasonfor thePresidentbeingoffensivetoalargesectionofhiscountrymenwhochose theroughandhazardouspathsinthefightforfreedom,andwereatleastas honestintheirpurposeasMr.Cosgrayeandhisfriends.Therewasatime whenthePresidentoftheSaorstatwasnotsoverycertainofhisposition, whenhecouldnottalkofhavingknockedthedeviloutofinsurgents.After thedeathofMichaelCollinsanythingmighthavehappened.Itisbadpolicytostrutinthefaceofabeatenopponentandsnapavulgarchallengeat hint.Mr.Cosgravehasn'tgainedavictoroveraforeignfoe,hehasdefeated Idsownfellowcountrymeninanationalcontroversythatwasdecidedon thebattlefield.TwosidesfoughtforIreland-onesidenotlessdevotedtoErin thantheother,andonewon.Itisreasonabletoexpectthat,asfrequentlyexpressedbytheCosgraveGovernment,thathavingdecidedthecontroversyonthebattlefieldagainsttheinsurgents,everyeffortwouldbemade byconciliationandmercytobringaboutaunitedIreland.Mr.Cosgrave'swildwordswillnotmakeforunity.TheissueofthegeneralelectionsnextmonthwillindicatethemajorityvoiceofIrelandinregardtothe Treaty.MeanwhileitisnaturaltoexpectthatDeValerashouldbeorganisinghisforcesforaConstitutionalfightatthepolls.Ifthereportiscorrect thathewillstandforClare,hisoldseat,againstProfessorJohnMcNeill 4MinisterforEducation),thegageofbattlewillbethrowndownbetweenthe RepublicanandFreeStateparties.ThedecisiontheremayparallelthehisUlricvictorygainedbyO'Connelloverhisopponents-twobigcombatantswill beinthefield,andtheindexwillbeworthnoting,forClarehasnotlost itsolepoliticalimportance.TheSaorstathasmuchtoaccomplishingovernmentbeforeitcanreallysayitisgoverningIrelandbyIrishideas,andit wallhavetogetinclosersympathetictouchwiththepeopleandunderstand thatisnotsacrosanct,butaveryhumanthingwhichreceivesitslifefrom thepeople.Beingstbjecttothepeople.itismerenonsenseforPresident Cosgravetochallengetheminority,forminoritieshaverightsequallyassacredasmajorities.Mr.Cosgravemustnotforgetthatbetweentenand eleventhousandofhisfellowcountrymenarestillindurancevile-someof thebestintellectofthenationisamongstthem,andtobringthisgreat bodyofIrishmenintohisfoldshoulddemandhisbesteffortsandhischoicestwordsofconciliation.Braggadocioaccomplishesnothing.

OrganisedVampires

ThelatelamentedPresidentHarding.whosedeaththeotherdayisaloss andasevereonetoDemocracy,inaspeechdeliveredalittlewhileagoin Washington,madeitverycleartobigotswhoorganiseforthepurposeofassailingthelibertiesofotherswhoarenotinfraternitywiththem,thathe hadnocommoninterestwiththem.Onthecontrary,herepudiatedsuchorganisationsasamenace,notonlytohumanfreedom.buttoNationalpeace. Hehadinhisthoughtsthatviciousanddegeneratehumanforcewhichhas grownupinrecentyearsonAmericansoil.andwhichsetsatdefianceAmericanlaw,andalsoseekstoabrogatethecardinalprinciplesoftheDeclarationofIndependence-equalityofcitizenshipandreligiousfreedom.For theseessentialsofAmericanlibertyeveryAmericanPresidenthasstood. ThoughhedidnotdirectlyassociatetheinfamousKuKluxKlanwithhis declaration,heleftnodoubtinthemindsofhisauditorsastowhomhereferred.Nowwereadthatveryrecentlyagreatgatherir.gofthesemaskedcreaturesofsocialandsectarianharedassembledatLongIsland,andin secretassemblyresolvedtodefyAmericanlaw.Theyrelyuponthenumericalstrengthoftheirmembership.WhichincludespublicofficialsandpersonshighintheprofessionalandcommerciallifeoftheRepublic.How fartheymaygointheirdeterminationtoresistthelawsoftheAmerican ConstitutionisamatterthatisgivinggraveconcerntotheAmericanDemocracy.Thisviciousorganisationisundoubtedlyattemptingtogetapull enAmericanpolitics,andtocreateconditionsofsectarianandracialunrest whichmust,unlesscrushed,splitAmericancitizenshipintowarringcamps.

Muchofitsdetestablepropagandahasbeenutilisedbysectarianistsin thiscountry.andweknowhowdisastrousitistopublicpeace."Secretfratenityisonething,secretconspiracyisanother,"saidthelate President.NottomincehisjudgmentoftheinfamyoftheKeKluxers,hedeclared,"Menlosetheirrightoffraternalhearingwhenthey transgressthelawoftheland."Theydomore,theylosetheirrighttoexist asanorganisationinaConstitutionalState.NowthattheKu-Kluxchallengehasgoneforth,whatwillGovernorSmith.ofNewYork,who signedthelawoftheStaterequiringthepublicationofnamesefsecret organisationsdo-howwillhemeetthechallengeoftheeightthousand KnightsoftheSheetwhodefyhim?InanotherdaytheignobleKnowNothingorganisation,whichhasbeenreproducedintheKuKluxKlan,was evenmoretrenchantlycondemnedbyAbrahamLincoln,whospokelikea Prophet.WritingtoJoshuaSpeed,in1855,thisbravedefenderoftheAmericanConstitutionsaid:"Iamnotaknow-nothing,thatiscertainHow couldIbe?Howcananymanwhoabhorstheoppressionofnegroesbein favourofdegradingclassesofwhitepeople?Ourprogressindegeneracy appearstomeprettyrapid.Asanationwebeganbydeclaringthat'all menarecreatedequal':wenowpracticallyreadit.'allmenarecreatedequal exceptnegroes.'Whentheknow-nothingsgetcontrol,itwillread.'allmen arecreatedequal,exceptnegroesandforeignersandCatholics.'Whenit comestothis.Ishallpreferemigratingtosomecountrywheretheymake nopretenceoflovingliberty-toRussia,forinstance,wheredespotismcan betakenpure,andwithoutthebasealloyofhypocrisy."Thosewerebrave words,worthyofanimmortalmemory.SomedayoutofAustralianpublic lifeonewithmindasvigorousandwithiusticeasstronglyenthronedinhis soul.mayemergeandcourageouslylaythewhiponthatmonsterofsectarianism,whichatintervalsshowsitelfinAustralianpublicaffairs,and driveitforeverfromoursocialandpubliclife.Whenthatdaycomasthere willheoccasionforpublicrejoicingandanationalfestival.

IndecentDressCondemned

Tohandisthenotsurprisingnew,ofthecondemnationinthepractical formofexclusionfromtheVaticanbytheHolyFatherofthemodern ladywhoshowssuchbadforminherover-doneattempttoshowhergood form.Thecondemnationsisnotamatterinwhichtoseehumour,butajoke isirresistibleandpardonableattimes.Thismoderncrazefordress,or themoreevidentabsenceofit,hascometobeapardonabledisgraceItis justanevidenceoftheworld'smoraldistortion.Thefemininesextoagreat extenthascometobelievethatalltheallurementsthatcanbecreatedby thesuggestionsofabbreviatedanddiaphanousgownsarepartoftheattractivenessallottedbytheCreatortothe"weakervessel."Suchwomenare theloudestintheirdenunciationsofthemoralexcessesthatfollowonthe suggestiveinfluenceofthescantyattireofto-dayoverthedepravedpassionsofmen.The"modernwoman"haslostthatsenseofdominationand aloofnessinmoralmattersthatcommandsrespect,andrepelsthevulgar cravingofmoralimbeciles.Shehassteppeddownfromtheperlesalon whichshewasheldinaweandrespect,andhasjoinedintherevelryanddebaucheryoftheBacchanals.Shehasdonethisbymakingherself.ynaturalattractions,augmentedbytheaidofsuggestiveattire,andoveeuseof thedeceptivecosmeticart,anobjecttolure,todepraveandmorallykill thosewhomherdecorativeachievementsfascinate.BeforeChristianitytook womaninhandshewasverilyaslave,nowadaysshewantstobesuch-to dress,dodancingand"highliving."Thatisnotwoman'ssphereonearth;she isGod'schosenmouldforHischildren,notonlyphysically,butpeculiarly byherinnatepowersofinfluence,spirituallyalso.Butthe"modernwoman" hasnotonlydiscardedtheDivinemouldanditsobligation,buthasentered thearenatocombatbyherlethalinfluence,indresssuggestionesp.ecially, theunwarysoultoriseabovethebrutalcravingsofnature.Thisdrastic campaignlaunchedbyPiusXI.againstbarearms,barenecks,andotherindecencieswhicharelefttothepowerlessresistancetolightonthepartof transparentfeatherweightfabricstohide,will,wefeelsure,havegoeleffect onthedevoteesofmodernfashions.Suchexcesses,wefeelhceadto state,arenotthesinsofwomeningeneral,butonlyofthosewhohavelost thesenseoffemininedignityandbeauty.ThefactthatnorHolyFatheris aprisonerattheVaticansaveshimfrommanyandmoreterribleocular shocks,forwemaywellsuppose,thateven'that"fastset"whenvisitingthe Vaticanwouldbesomewhat,ifnotsufficiently,carefulintheirattire..Even inW.A.wearenotfreefromthesemi-nakedscarecrhw(forsuchsheisinher so-calledup-to-dateattire).Wecanexcusethefemininesexfordressingap propriatelytoahotclimate.butthatcanbedonebyherdecentlyandas effectively,andshewouldthenridusallofthesuspicionthatshewas neglectingfierselfdesignedlyindressquantityforthingshotterthanthe climate.

Itisinterestingtolookbackon thesetransactionsofSavingsBankauthorities.InonecaseaSavingsBank Commissioner,actingforhisbank,took up£500,000worthinonesingleapplication.Hisbankwaspayingitsdepositors31percent.forthemoneyandreceiving6percent.fromtheCommonwealth,andafterdrawingthishandsomerateofinterestforthepastthree years,hisBankcouldsellthosesame Bondsontheopenmarketto-dayfor £15,000morethanhegaveforthem.

Whatisgoodbusinessforthebig mansholudbegoodbusinessforthe littleman.andSavingsBankinvestors canto-daymakequiteaniceincrease intheirinterestearningsbytakingup portionofthepresentCommonwealth Loannowbeingfloated.Inmaking thisassertionthereisnointention whateverofhurtingthebusinessofthe SavingsBanks.anyoneofwhomwould saytoanenquiringdepositorto-morrow:"Yes,byallmeanstakeupa BondintheCommonwealthLoan."

Meninthisstatewerenotlikelyto followtheirownargumentsouttothe end.Thejadedmindwasalwaysattri,tedbynovelty,andbeforethey gottotheendoftheroadleadingto theChurch.'theyleftitforsomething else.

Mr.Wells'HalfMeasures. Perhapsnobraininthenon-Christianworldto-daywassoactiveasthat ofMr.H.G.Wells.Someyearsago hehadwrittenabookaboutamodern Utopia,inwhichhediscoveredthat peoplemighthaveallthesocialperfectionshesoughttodepictandyetbe extremelydull.Therewasalackof whatAmericanscall"uplift"-inother words,oftheexceptionallyheroic.

Withhisusualsincerity.Mr.Wells ha-1settoworktoproduceasortof sp-:tualaristocracytoremedythis, shornhecalled.inJapanesefashion, "Samurai."Being,likeallothersof hi-typeatthattime,extremelyanxioustofindallhismodelsoutsideChristianity,hehadevidentlyfeltitdidnet mattermuchwhereelsetheycame fissirs.Inaword-thoughMr.Wells wouldnothaveadmittedit-those peopleweretobeascetics.Butthen criticismbegan,anditwaspointed thatinthissecularscientificRepublic, whichhaddoneawaywithGodand theSaints.thesepeoplewouldhaveabsolutelynosuperiors,and,beingadmittedtobesuperiorbothbythe Stateandothers,andalsointheirown estimation,theywouldbecomequite insufferable.
