Catholics,asarule,havereasonto beproudoftherobustfaithoftheir co-religionists,andofthesacrificesand hardworkwhichtheycontributeto thegrowthofthegreatinstitutionof whichtheyareprivilegedtobemembers.Butinalmosteveryparish thereisacertainsmallminoritymade upofwhatmightwellbecalled"nearCatholics."
Near-beerissaid,bythoseinapositiontospeakadvisedly,tobeveryfar fromtherealthing,butitmustbe infinitelyclosertotheactualbeverage thansomeofthenear-Catholicsareto thegenuineCatholic.Theyare,in truthone-half-of-one-percentCatholics.Theirfervour,atitsbest,isfar fromintoxicating,andevenwithout thelabelwouldnotfoolanypersonof ordinarydiscernment.Chemicalanalysisisnotfeasible,butthereare certainmarksbywhichitispossible totellthemake-believeCatholicfrom therealCatholic.Hisfaithisdiluted, milk-and-watery,feeble,apologetic.half-heartedandashamed.Weall knowofthemarksthatpointoutthe trueChurch.Mayitnotbepossible toindicatethesignswhichdifferentiatethecase-half-cit.-one-per-cent Catholicfromhisfullbodiedbrotherin theFaith?Hereareafewofthe symptoms,takenatrandon: HeisopposedtoCatholicschools, andthinksitamarkofbroadmindednesstosaysotohisnon-Catholic neighbours.Hedoesnotstopto thinkthatthecollectivejudgmentof thoseinauthorityhasdecidedthat theyareabsolutelyessential.
HeconsiderstheChurchtoorigidon thesubjectofdivorck,notpausingto considerthattheChurchmerelyenforcesthelawlaiddownbytheDiv ireFounderoftheCatholicChurch, andthatitswisdomisnowacknowledgedbythoughtfulmenofallcreeds.

Henevergoesonaretreatortoa "mission,"believingthattheseactivitiesareintendedforwomenandchil dren.Heisunconsciousofthefact thatthisplaceshimintheclassofthe Pharisees,whothankedGodthatthey werenotasothermen.
HeneversubscribestoaCatholic newspaper,revieworbook,buthe spendsmoneylavishlyonyellownewspapers.flashymagazinesandhooks thatfurnishneitherentertainmentnor instruction.
HedoesnotrememberCatholichospitals.collegesorcharitableorganisationsinhissill.Heis,inshort,a Catholicinnameonly,andatthe sametimeheexpectstobenefitbyall ofthegoodthatisbeingaccomplished bythewonderfulChurchofwhichhe isonlyanominalmember.
Nowamanmaybeguiltyofoneor 111.,ofthesedefectsandstillbea practisingCatholic.butifhefailsin manythings,andifhebeapersistent backsliderhowcanheconsiderhimself apartoftheChurchmilitant?He :nestberegardedasanear-Catholicor ahalf-of-one-per-centCatholic.Heis slackerandhecannotregardhimselfasanythingelse.Howcansuch personsberegardedwithprideinthe CatholicChurch?Incivillifeamars iseitherloyalorheisnot.Thereare nohalf-waystations.Whyshould itbedifferentinreligion?
Heisverymuchannoyedwhenthe pastorpreachesagainstmixedmarriages,andisfearfulthatitmaygive theChurchthereputationofbeing narrow-minded.Hedoesnotstopto inquireintothemiseryandunhappinesscausedbythemajorityofsuch marriages,andhasnotconceptionof theappallinglossoffaithwhichcomes asaconsequenceofsuchunions.
Heisashamedtocarrybeadsfor fearthathewillbeclassedamongthe uneducated.Thepoormandoesrot knowthattherosaryisoneofthe mostbeautifulandeffectiveformsof prayer,andthatmanymenofculture andlearningwouldnotdreamofbeingwithoutthebeads.
Heisneverknowntosasgracebeforeoraftermeals.butifyouspeak ofThanksgivingDayhewillgrowenthusiasticbecausethatisacustom whichisinfavourwiththosewhoare outsidethepaleoftheChurch.
HeisverycriticalabouttheKnights ofC,ohnubus,ignoringthefactthat thatorganisationhastheunreserved approvalofthePopeandthose:nauthority,andthatitsexistencehasbeen amplyjustifiedbythewonderfulwork ithasaccomplishedforChurchand country.
Heisskepticalaboutshrines,and shrugsh'sshoulderswhenLourdesis mentioned.Yetheisattentiveand muchimpressedwhensomeofhisnonCatholicneighbourstalkaboutChristianScienceoranyofthemodernfads andfanciesbaseduponunquestioning faith.
HemissesMassfortrivialcauses, butoftenenjoysareputationforhis punctualityinattendingtoseculardutieswhicharenottobecomparedto theHolySacrificeinimportance
ThetrueCatholictriestodohisfull dutyatleastintheobservanceofthe lawsoftheChurch.Whetherhehe devoutishisownpersonalconcern; butatleastheshouldsupportthe Churchtothebestofhisability,and followitsruleswithunquestioningobedience.Andthefactthatthegreat majoritydosointhiscountryisone ofthereasonsforitsflourishingeonrlitionintheseUnitedStates.

Hewasordainedin1874,andservedas curateinNewcastleWestandinLimerickCityforsomeyears.Hewas appointedP.P.ofSt.Mary's,Limerick,in1894,andfouryearslaterwas transferredtoNewcastleWest.The lateDr.O'DwyermadehimVicarGeneral.andhewascreatedaDomesticPrelatebytheHolyFatherin 1900. HebecameaCanononthe LimerickChapterin1912,andwas createdBishopofLimerickonthe deathofDr.O'Dwyerin1918. OnSaturday.January17,1680,seven priest,weresentencedtobedrawn, hangedandquartered.Theyhad beentriedundertheStatuteofQueen Elisabeth,onlyforbeingpriests,and fornoothercrime.Eighthadbeen arraigned,butoneofthem,Father DavidJosephKemeys,O.S.B..wasso illthattheLordChiefJusticeScroggs senthimbacktoprison,wherehedied tendayslateron.Thenamesofthe otherswere:LionelAlbertAnderson. 0.P.,WilliamMarianusRussel,0.S.F., CharlesParris,aliasParry,Henry Starkey.TamesMarusCorker.O.S.B., WiliamMarshall.andAlexanderLumsden,0-P.FatherLumsdenwasa Scot,andtheActofElizabethdidnot applytoScotland,sohewassetaside forthepointoflawtobeargued,but nothingmoreisknownofhim.One ortwoofthesepriestshadreceived protecticnfromtheKinginyearsgone by,sothattheKingrefusedtosign warrantsfortheirexecution,andthey remainedinNewgateundersentence ofdeathforthenexttwoyears,mercifullyforgottenwhilstthestrugglebetweentheKingandhisParliament wasprc.ceedingovertheExclusionBill.
Itisknownthatthesepriestswere neverexecuted,andthattheyultimatelyobtainedtheirliberty.butthe timeandthecircumstancesunder whichtheyobtaineditareutterlyunknown.Theonlyrecordisoneto whichthepresentwriterhas,upto thepresent,alonehadaccess.Twoof thecondemnedpriestshad,together withSirGeorgeWakeman.theQueen's physician,andothers,beentriedon the18thofJulyoftheprecedingyear ontheabsurdchargeofconspiringto poisontheKing.

Thereporterofthetrialsatthistime wasRobertBlaney.barrister,ofthe MiddleTemple,andoneoftheRye HouseConspiratorsof1883.Ithad longbeenknownthatBlaneywasin thehabitofdoctoringhisreports,and sowhenFathersAndersonandCorker readtheprintedreportoftheirown trial,andfoundthatitwasuntruthful, theypublishedapamphletdrawingattentiontotheomissionsinit.How theycontrivedtodothismustforever beunknown,butitisaninteresting factthattheirpamphletisinexistence,andwillsoonbereadilyaccessible attheBritishMuseum.Fromthis pamphlet.therefore,Salmondrewthe interpolationswhichhavecausedso manyconjectures.Itwillbeofdeep interesttoallstudentsofthePopish Plot.FatherCorker,itwillheremembered.actedasBlessedOliver Plunket'schaplainduringhisconfinementinNewgate,andpreparedhim fordeathduringthefollowingyear, 18!. Beforetheendoftheyear1681the Kingwasmasteragain,outsidethe CityofLondon,wherethesheriffs,at Shaftesbury'sdirections,ruledall.In 1680,whenSirPatienceWard,aperjurer,wasMayor.andplacedtheinscripionontheMonumentasserting thatLondonwasburntbythePapistsin1666.thecitywasinactualrebellion.Butatthecloseof1681Sir JohnMoore.,inspiteofShaftesbury's attemptsatintimidation,waselected LordMayor,andtheendwasinsight.. Nevertheless.twomoredishonestsheriffshadbeenelected.Pilkingtonand Shute,andthusShaftesbury'sescape fromtrialbecameacertainty.

ForPilkingtoninpersonpackedthe grandjurythatreturned"ignoramus" tothebillagainstShaftesbury,andhe andhiscolleague.Shute.bythemselvesortheirdeputies,packedgrand andpettyjuriesineverycasesentfor trialbyorderoftheKingandCouncil.Untilthesedishonestmencould begotridoftherewasstilldangerin London.Fortunately,withSirJohn MooreforLordMayoritwascertain thatPilkingtonandShutewouldfind nosuccessorsofthelikestampinthe Septemberof1682.Moreover.itwas absurdthat.whiletheKingappointed allthesheriffsthroughoutEngland. tworebelsnotappointedbyhim shouldattempttobrowbeathimin London.SotheKingbroughtawrit of"QuoWarranto"againstthecity charter.

Attemptsarebeingmadebymeans ofpersonalpersecutiontorenderthepastoraldutiesoftheCatholicBishops asdifficultaspossible.Alreadyone ofthemostdistinguishedmembersof theepiscopate,BishopGlattfelder,of Csanad-Temesvar,hasbeenforcedto tenderhisresignationtotheHolySee becausetheRumanianGovernment stoppedthepaymentofrevenuesdue tohisdioceseandthepriestsunder him.
Thissuspensionofpaymentwasthe resultofcriticismvoicedbytheBishop inaPastor'alLetterregardingtheconfiscationofchurchpropertyunderthe pretextof"agrarianreform."
SimilarmeasuresarebeingthreatenedagainstBishopMajiaco,ofTraneylvania,andBishopSzecheny,of Grosswardein.
BishopSzechenywasdeprivedofhis seatintheSenateevenbeforethe adoptionofthenewConstitutionbecause.duetoill-health,hehadbeen forcedtoremainforatimeinthe Hungarianpartofhadiocese,andwas absentfromtheSenateforaconsiderabletime.
ThepressofBucharestattemptsto givetheimpressionthathedeserted hisoffice,andcontendsthatheshould beforcedtoresignfromtheadministrationofthatpartofhisdiocese whichliesinRumania.

ArchbishopNetzhammer,ofBucharest,hasalsobeensubjectedtopersecutionandattack.LastChristmas, forexample,hewasbitterlycriticised forhavingpreachedasermoninthe Germanlanguageinaccordancewith anoldcustomwhichcallsforthealternateuseoftheGermanandtheRumaniantonguesinsermonsatthe Cathedral.
OnEasterSundaytheArchbishop deliveredanothersermon,thistimein theRumanianlanguage.whichwas thesubjectofbitterattacks. Althoughthesermonwasdeliveredinthe presenceoftheKingandthePapal Nuncio.itwasmisrepresentedinaBucharestnewspaper,andtheNuncio, ArchbishopMarmaggi,wasaccusedof havingattackedtheRumanianstate. theOrthodoxChurch,andevenofhavingmadepolemicallusionstothe King.
ManyCatholicschoolsandcharitable institutionshavebeenforcedtoclose

inRumania.AnexampleisthemagnificentschoolofthePremonstratensiansatGrosswardein.Thewhole buildingwithitsrichcollectionof hooksandotherarticlesofeducational value,nearlyallofwhichweredonatedbytheCatholicBishops,hasbeen confiscatedbytheauthoritiestobe convertedintoaRumanianState School.

Averyseriousmenaceoffurther troublefortheChurchinRumaniais containedintheBill"fortheregulationofreligiousworship"accordingto whichallmembersofreligiouscommunitieswhoarenotofRumaniannationality,wouldhavetosuspendtheir activitiesinthatcountry.Thiswould beadeathblowtoCatholicschools,institutionsandconvents,sincethe membersofmostofthecommunities areRumaniansubjects,butnotofRumaniannationality.
ManyofthembelongtonationalitieswhichbecamesubjecttoRumania whenthelattercountrywasenlarged attheconclusionoftheWorldWar. ThisBillhaspassedonereadinginthe nationalchamber,butoppositiontoit andcriticismfromabroadwasso strongthatfurtherconsiderationhas beenpostponedbytheGovernment untilAutumn.

AllattemptstobringaboutamodificationoftheGovernment'sattitude towardtheChurchinRumaniahave failedsofar.Ithasbeenreported nreliableauthoritythattheKing personallypromisedthePapalNuncio thattheprovisionsofthenewConstitution,wherebytheOrthodoxChurch isgivena position,favouredor"domineering" wouldberemoved,sothat theCatholicChurchwouldnotbe placedinahumiliatingposition.
But,apparently,theinfluenceofthe Kinghasnotbeenstrongenoughto resistthepassionateantagonismthat isdirectedagainsttheCatholicChurch. Atallevents,theprovisionsinques- tionwerecontainedintheConstitutionasitwasadopted.Itseems thatinnoothercountry,exceptper- hapsinBolshevikRussia,istheCatholicChurchfacetofacewithsucha desperatestruggleasconfrontsitin Rumania.

Thenextisacablestatingthatthe ImmigrationOfficeinLondoncannot, orwillnottryto,getfarmingemigrantsfromtheSouthofIrelancr, whereeminentlysuitableemigrantsfor assistedlandsettlementareobtainable. ThereasongivenisthatIrelandis nowaFreeStateandmustcontrol herownemigrationlaws.
Thissoundsreasonable,butstillour needissogreatthatthereisnothing topreventtheemigrationoffice,orour AgentGeneral.fromapproachingthe CosgraveGovernmenttoassistthem byhelpingtofindimmigrantssuitable forfarmingsettlementinWestAustralia.
IftheAgentGeneral'sofficewillnot dothis.thenourownpeopleinWesternAustraliashouldtakesomeaction. Theimmigrantsweprincipallyrequire arepeoplewhobynatureandtraining arefittedforfarminglife,andpeople whohavethenecessaryphysiqueto withstandthehardshipsandhard workofopeningupnewcountry.
Thegreatmajoritycfimmigrants fromIrelandwouldfulfiltheseconditions,asmostofthemhavebeen rearedinconnectionwithfarmingof some instinctivekind.Theygenerallyhavean knowledgeofstack,andare nearlyalwaysp6opleofgoodphysique. Yet,notwithstandingthesequalifica- tions,itisaremarkablething,andnot verycreditabletotfs.thatiti arare thingtoseeanIrishmanam.:ngetthe newsettlers.
ThepolicyofthisStateforthelast twentyyearshasbeentoinducepeo- pletosettleupontheland,andto

WantThingsProved.
ThetroublewithCatholicsisthat theyliketohavethingsproved; whereinthydifferfromamoreadvancedandenlightenedworld.Alone amongmodernpeople,theydonot think,asmosteducatedpeoplenow naturallydo,thatwhenanybodycallinghimselfascientificmanhassuggestedanythingandcalleditscientificittherebyimmediatelybecomesa monumentalandirrevocablefactcalledscience.Theydidnotthinkthat DarwinianNaturalSelectionhadbeen provedbecauseithadbeentalked about,andsincethenithasbeentalkedabouttillitisprettynearlydisproved.Theydonotthinkthatthe Einsteintheoryisprovedbecauseit istalkedabout:theywouldthinkit suggestionisprovedwheneveritis understoodbecauseitistalkedabout. TheydonotthingProfssorFreud's suggestionisprovedwheneveritis talkedabout,wheneversomegayand chattypersonsuggeststous,forinstance,thatadreamofwalkingupa staircaseisconnectedwiththesexual experienceofaprehistoriccow.They donotsayprematurelythattheMendeliancaseisprovedbecauseMendel wasamonk;anymorethantheysaid prematurelythattheCopernicantheory:wasprovedbecauseCusahadbeen aCardinal.Catholicsliketohave thingsreallyprovedtothembyreason:itisaweaknessoftheirs.They donotacceptfashionorsensationor imaginationasasubstituteforreason. NobodycouldexpectMr.Wellsto provesuchathinginanovel,itdiminishesthevalidityofhistalking aboutitinanovel.Tous,seeing thesethingsinanovelisjustlike seeingtheminanewspaper:itproves nothingaboutthemexceptthatthey areasillyseasontopicandweknow howsillyseasonscanbe.Justasitis: inanewspaperbecauseitisnews,it isinanovelbecauseitisanovelty: orappearstobetopeoplewiththe shortmemoryofanunhistoricalage. Andwhy?Becausetheydo notaskforit,becausetheydonot knowinIrelandthatinWesternAustraliathereisaStatewheremencan acquirefarmswithoutcapital-where thereisthemostgenerousandliberal landpolicyintheworldandnochicaneryaboutit.AndIsubmit,Mr. Edntor,thatiftheImmigrationOffice inLondondoes.notputthisinformationbeforetheCosgraveGovernment itisthedutyofsomeofourlocalrepresentativebodiestodoso.Ithink thatthisisaquestionthatconieswithintheprovinceoftheCelticClub,and iftheymoveinthemattertheywill findgeneroussupport,andtheywill renderaservicetothisStateandle theirfellowcountrymen.-Yours,etc.

SenatorLynchhasabigfarmthereof 2,600acres,andhehadinvitedmeto spendsomedayswithhimandthe familyonthefarmandhaveataste ofAustralianbushlife.Thiswasa newexperienceandamostenjoyable one.TheSenatordrovemeinatrap toallpartsofthefarm.Itwasinterestingtoseetheteamsofeight bighorsesatworkinthefields,and whentheworkwasoverwalkingor trottingawaybythemselvestothe paddock.ortoseethecowboyridingbarebackandroundingupthecows tobringthemin'atmilkingtime.In theeveningaswesatontheverandahitwasaglorioussighttowatch thehushfiresallaroundus.After threedaysonthefarmatThree SpringsIreturnedtoPerth.butonly toundertakeanewjourneythenext day.Mytablecompaniononthe 'Orvieto,'Mr.Greenard.theGovern. mentInspectorofMines,hadinvited metotheKalgoorliegoldmines,and promisedtoshowmeeverythingofinterestinthatgreatestofgoldfields.I accordinglymadeuseofmypassand journeyedtoKalgoorlie,adistanceof 375milesfromPerth.Thejourney itselfwanquiteinteresting,asitwas mostlythroughAustralianbushland and1,800feetuptotheKalgoorlie plateau.Kalgoorlieisawonderful place.Upto1893itwasamere stretchofwastebushland.Then PaddyHannandiscoveredgoldthere, andintwoorthreeyears'timethere wasacityof30,000inhabitants.

WenowcometoexaminebrieflytheclaimsofvalidityofOrdersput forthbythesemodernRitualisticProtestantsor"Anglo-Catholics."Since theyareProtestantswhohavegoneastrayitisonlyjusttothemtosiftthe treatmentmetedouttotheirOrdersbytheirforbearsintheBlessedReformat.on.Goingbacktothebeliefsofthemenwhohadachiefhandin thecompilationoftheEdwardineOrdinal(uponwhichAnglo-CatholicsdependforthevalidityoftheirOrders),wefindthatthecompilersrepudiated withoutqualificationtheideasthatadvancedAnglicansnowinnocentlytell ustheylabouredhardtoembody.InconnectionwithOrders,equallywith theMass,theReformersrepudiatedeverythingofasacerdotalorsacrificial character,expressingsignificantlytheirhostilitythereto.WiththeGermansandtheSwisstheydeniedthattheEucharistwasapropritiatorysacrificeinanysense.TheywereequallyexplicitinrespecttoOrders.In 1540Cranmerpronouncedthat"Bishopsandpriestswerenottwothings, butoneofficeinthetimeofChrist-hethatisappointedbishoporpriest needsnoconsecrationforelectionorappointment,andifallthebishops andpriestsinaregionweredead,theKingofthatregionshouldmakebishopsandpriestsforthatregion."Thisistheman.wearetold,who framedtheEdwardineOrdinaltoperpetuatetheRomanHierarchy.Absurditycouldnotwellgofurther.MuchmightbesaidalsoofRidley,who showedevenafirmerhandthanCranmerhimself.Ridleyillustratedhis rejectionofthesacerdotalministrybyrazingthealtarsatRochester.He observesinhiswritingsthat,"OftheRomanMass,whichissaidto-day, Scripturehasnotsomuchasonesyl!able."Hooper,BishopofWorcester. contributesinthesamevein-"PlaincontrarywastheChristoftheCross. andtheChristoftheMass.ThelatteristheChristoftheCatholicChurch. i.e.,theRomanHarlotwhoisexceedinglyCatholicanduniversal."Barlow,whosupportedCranmerandtheothers.declares:"IftheKing'sgrace. thesupremeheadoftheChurchofEngland.didchoose,denominate.and electanylaymanbeinglearnedtobeabishop,thathechosenshouldbeas goodabishopasheis,orthebestinEngland."Later,amemorablewitnesstotheshamthatAnglicanOrdersare,isArchbishopLaud.whotried toforceconformitytotheEstablishedChurchonthenon-Episcopaliansof England.desiringmenwithoutAngli"anOrderstotakeAnglicanofficesfor theappearanceofthething.Laudhasbeenvauntedeveninourown day,asachampionoftheircausebymenwhodonotknowhim.Yet hisvietccwereensounianduncatholicashisattempttoenforcetheoutward conformityaloneshows.Thusisthe^fancyoftheRitualistsurrounded byitsProtestantenemy-anenemythatdoesnotchokeitnutof violence,butbyargument.Theattemptofthe"Anelo-Catholie"ss awayfromtheirorigin,theirstruggletodenytheirconnectionwiththe Reformers,isfutileandfoolish.whentheghostsofCranmer.Ridleyand Barlowisbroughtforwardastheirsp,nsors.Attemptingtoassumea

THEDENOUEMENT.
Thelastdecadeofthelastcenturysawtheclimaxtotheeffortsof Anglo-CatholicstoestablishtheirCatholicclaims.Duringthoseyearsa movementforcorporatereunionoriginatedwithapartyintheEstablished Church.ThoughcorporatereunionwasimpossibleyettheCatholicdignitariesofEnglandsawinthemovementanearnesthankeringafterRome. CardinalVaughanwasparticularlyhopefulthatthecorporatereunionidea, broughttoitslogicalconclusion,wouldresultintheonlyotherpossible remedy,viz-submissiontotheHolySeebythosewhowerelookingRonaewards.ButProtestantismwasanoverwhelmingingredientintheir"AngloCatholicism,"andthemovementbroughtnouniversalchange.Corporate reunionwithoutcorporate.submissionwastheirclaim,andtheresultwas thememorablepronouncement.ofLeoVIII.intheBull"ApostolicaeCurae" ontheinvalidityofAnglicanOrders.Thus,onceandforall.weknowthat thosewhoarebuttressinguptheirlostclaimsinEnglandbyinsinuation aremenofshortmemories.TheyknowthatRomedoesnotwantthem, savethroughthedisavowaloftheirpast.arecognitionoftheirimpacsible position.andacompleteabsorptionthroughcorporatesubmission.

InWednesday's"DailyNews"wehadArchbishopRiley'sviewsonFaith Healingfullygiveninhisaddresstotheclergyonthesubject.Wewould saythat)hisAnglicanGracewouldhaveavoidedthestatementifhecould, but,owingtotheAnglicanArchiepiscopalpatronagewhichHicksonhas enjoyedintheotherStates,itwasincumbentonthelocalArchbishopto makeastatementofsomekindorotheronthematter.Truetohiscustomarywaysofdoingthings,theArchbishopevadestheissueintheletter whichwashissolepurpose.WearenothereinterestedinwhathisGrace succeededinnotsayingaboutFaithHealing.Wewishtopointoutafew misleadingandinaccuratestatementsinhisencyclical.Hesays:"Inoer PrayerBooktherewas,uptothe16th.Century,adefiniteprayer,etc."lie says,inotherwords,thattheAnglicanChurchexistedbeforeitwas broughtintobeing.Their"PrayerBook"wascompiledinthe16th.Century,andithasnoconnection,savethatofcontradiction,withanyformulas oftheCatholicFaithwhichwasthefaithofEnglandbeforetheArchbishop'sReformingfriendsgotonthewarpath.EnglandwasCatholicup tilltheReformation.andhadnoAnglicanPrayerBookoritsdesecrating contents.WewouldhavehisGraceknowthatheisaProtestant,and Protestantismdatesfromthe16th.Century.Ofcoursetheremaybesomethinginwhatwesaidlastweekthatheistemporisingwithmovementsin Englandonthepartofhisdissentingfriends.the"Anglo-Catholics."Wonderswillnevercease,butitistoomuchtoexpect,evenfromtheopportunistArchbishop,thatheshouldsomersault,evendiplomatically,from thelowestofLowChurchismtotheaerialflightsoftheAnglo-Catholics. Secondly,hisAnglicanGracereferstothe"RomanbranchoftheChurch.° Branchofwhat?Arewetobedubbedasabranchofatreeonwhich sproutsasisterProtestantbranch?Areweallone,thoughdifferent?A treeonlyproducesonekindoffruit,andyoucannotgatherfigsand grapesofftheonetree.Weareabranchofnotree,stilllessofatree throughthefoliageofwhichhisGracecanbeseentopeep.Wedoadmit thattherearesuchthingsasdeadbranches.Thirdly.theArchbishopblames theteachingoftheCatholicChurchonExtremeUnctionforthetimidity ofpeopleincallingintheclergytothesick.lesttheimpressionofapproachingdeathshouldinjurethesick.Heiswrongagain.OurteachingonExtremeUnctionisthis:Thatitisadministeredtothoseindanger ofdeathbysickness,inordertohelpthemtodiewellifdeathforthem'be thewillofGodatthetime,andsecondarilytophysicallyhelpthemtorecoverifsuchshouldbethewilloftheAlmighty.TheCatholichasnodread ofExtremeUnction.butdeemsittheproperandpertinentministryofthe mercyofChristinhisdeclininghours.OnewouldimaginethattheArch bishopwouldbediplomaticenoughtoleaveoutanymentionoftheAngli cantreatmentofthedying.CanhesaythatalldyingAnglicanshave spiritualhelp?Wesayno,andchalengecontradiction.Theirhandsare emptyofconsolationsforthedying-riotsotheCatholic.Thepriestwill beatthebedsideofthesickanddyingCatholicin.linctively,withoutrespectofclassorcondition.CanhisGraceeaythesameofhisclergy?We wouldaskhim.outoffairness,tokeephishandsoffthatforwhichhehas nosubstitute.andtobecarefulnottobroadcasthiswarped,false.andoffensiveviewsofCatholicdoctrineandministrations.

Thefollowingisadescriptionofthe building:Thebuilding,placedasitis onsuchanimposingsight,witha beautifulandextensiveviewofPerth andthehillsfarbeyondandinalldirections,hasafinemajesticappearance.Itisbuiltofbrick,andwith whatisknownas"specials"tothe principalfrontsandreturns.Thefacingsanddressingsofstucco,thewindowsandotherfeaturesofthebeautifulOratoryareofpressedcement. Theworkiscarriedoutintheperpendicularstyle.TheOratory,whichis moredecorativethantherest,has beentreatedbothintheexteriorand theinteriorinamosteffectivemanner.Thenichesoneithersideofthe Sanctuarywithinthenavehaveenrichedopenplastertracerycanopies. Theceilingisgroinedinfibrousplaster. theanglemouldingsofwhichstrikeoff mouldercapitalsoftripledcolumns, carrieddowntothefloor,andterminateinthecentreoftheceiling.The stalls,ofwhichtherearetworowson eithersideoftheOratory.and;he altarrailing,arerichlymouldedFri.n..th polishedjarrahwithbanksiapanels, executedbyAhern'sLtd.,fromdetailedplansprovidedbythearchitect. Thebeautifulaltarandchapelbenches,byGrothandBerry,arealso mostcreditableexamplesofthejoiner'sart.Atthebackofthenaveis achoirgallery.enteredfromthecorridoronthefirstfloor,withpanelled polishedfront.Theelectriclightim, effectsintheOratoryareveryfineand impressive.Thebeautifulstatuesin thenichesarelitupfrominvisible lightsinthehoodsofthecanopies.
TheTabernacleisalsolitupina similarmannerTheunusuallyconvenientplanningoftherestofthe buildingisagreatfeatureshown throughout,forthereisvirtuallynota footofunnecessaryorwastespace, andeveryconvenienceisprovidedon eachfloor.Theventilationalsohas beenwellandcarefullyattendedto. Sundayprovedclearandfine,anideal dayforfootball,andthe35-miletrip inthechar-a-banewasthoroughlyenjoyedbytheteamandthefewCollegefriendsfromaroundthedistrict whomadethejourney.TheBerkshiregroundwasreachedjustbefore 2,allfeelingpleasedwiththeworld ingeneralandthemselvesinparticularafteramostenjoyabledinnerby thewayside.Thehometeamand supporterswerethereinforce,and afteralittleleg-looseninghadbeenindulgedinbybothteams,thematch commencedat2.45.Fromtheoutset Berkshirepressedtothe,attack,and showedthemselvestobeaverydifferentcombinationfromtheonethathad donebattleontheCollegegroundin thefirstround.Almostwithoutexceptiontheywerebig,fastmen,who knewthegroundthoroughly,andmade fewmistakesinhandlingtheball.The groundwasratherontheshortside. andBerkshirewastednotimeinfancy passingorrunning,butbootedquick andhardstraightdownthecentre.
TheCollegeboystriedtoplaytheir usualgameofshort,crispstabbing, butshowedmarkedinabilitytokick thenewballaccurately,andtheresultofthedifferenceintacticsquickly becameapparent.Withaslightwind intheirfavour,thelonghighpuntsof theBerkshiremenmadetheground seemveryshort,andtwosmartgoals fromBobLaniganmadethehome supportersiubilant.JerryClunewas provingasusualarockathalfback, and'wasrepellingattackafterattack. AtlastJimClime,atcentre,tooka brilliantmarkoverCockle,andGuhl wasimmediatelyputintopossession. Hemadenomistake,andacharacteristicdashandafinediopkickgained theCollege'sfirstgoal.Therestof thequarterwasading-longstruggle withBerkshireintheascendancy, mainlyowingtothesterlingworkof BertTierney(inruck),Gavinand Cockle(centre).Thequarterended withthescores:Berkshire,22:S.I.C., 1.1.Withthewindintheirfavour, thefewCollegesupportersexpected greatthingsoftheirmen,butwere disappointed.Thebacksplayedmagnificently-especiallyNinnyClune. Newastheexperiencewastothe Collegetohavetheleadwrestedfrom Ithem,yet3.3wasnohugedeficit,and prospectswerecomparativelyrosy.The quarterthatfollowedwasasaddisillusionment.Thehometeamhadit alltheirownway.Inpractically everypartofthefieldtheywerebeatingtheiropponentstotheball,always infrontforthemark,andwereplayingfastandcleverfootball.Itwas hardtopickanyBerkshiremanout forprominence,sowellweretheyall playing,andJimandVinneyClune andHennesseywereamongthefew thatwerebattlinghardforthelosers. Duringthehearingofthe broughtin:PeHighCourts,crubiiii bymembersofthefamilyofthebat "Boss"Crokertoupsethiswilldate October12th.1919.Mr.SerjeantHan na,K.C..gaveavividnarrativeofde ceased'scareerinAmerica,wherea theageof13or14yearshewasputt earnhislivingasafitter'shelper,of terwardsbecomingamechanic,a whichtradeheworkeduntil1864.A theageof23yearshejoinedtheNew YorkFireBrigade,andafterthattime datedMr.Croker'sremarkableassocia tionwiththegreatcityofNewYork Hebecameassociatedwithapolitica associationknownasTammanyHall andformanyyearsupto1902,when heresignedtheleadership.heoccnpieI manyimportantcivicoffices,including aldermanofthecity.coroner,,Ac Duringaconsiderableportionofthat timethedeceasedwasalsoamember ofafirmofrealestateagentsinNew York,andearnedhisincomeIron speculationsinrealproperty.In1902 hecametoEngland.
at3:i0,(0)dollars.Inthecourseof thecasetheywouldfindthatthe fatherbecamedissatisfiedwiththe dwayhissonhadbeenusingthepower ofattorney,andheseemedtoconsider thathehadabusedthepowerand wasactingasifthewholethingwasin ohisownhandandthathecoulddo whathelikedwithit.Thefather askedsomequestions,and,apparently, tRichardwasannoyedandresentedit.
DealingwithMr.Croker'sfirstmarriage,SerjeantHannasaidin1872 hemarriedaMissBrett,andthere wereseveralchildrenofthemarriage. Thejurywouldonlybeconcernedwith fourofthesechildrenviz.,Richard, theeldestson,whowasdisputinghis father'swill,whowasreputedinAmericatobeamillionaire.Theywould notbeconcernedwiththatexception; thefactofbeingamillionaireputa personinapositiontocarryonlitigationwhenotherscouldnot.There wasanothersoncalledHoward,who wasassociatedwiththepresentproceedingsAndMrs.EthelWhite.There wasalsoadaughternamedFlorence, wholivedinEngland.Sfiehadalwaysbeendissociatedfromtheother childreninthequarrelsthatwenton, andshewasalwaysonherfathers side.
Oneson,Frank,whosebusinesscapacitythefatherverymuchvalued,was killedinamotorracein1905,and anotherson,Bertie,waskilledsubse quentlyinarailwayaccident.
Thelate Crokerwhileamanof considerablewealthwasofhumble origin,andinhislifedidnotreacha certainsocialculture.Hewasmore orlesslookeddownuponasnotfit totakeaplaceinNewYorkSociety. Scathingremarksweremadeabout him,andinthe'ninetiesfrictionbecameveryacutebetweenhimandthe membersofthefamily.Tfiewifeand childrenwereallforsociety,whileMr. RichardCroker,senr.,waseitherunfit orunwillingtotakepartinit.
Thefamilyconditionsbecamevery unhappyandasaresultofdiscussions abouttheconductofthechildrena seperationdeedwasenteredintobetweenhimselfandhisfirstwifein 1897.
ReturntoIreland.
Aftertheseparationdeedwasmade in1897thefamilylivedwithMrs. Croke',whileMr.Crokerlivedamore orlesslonelylife.Membersofhis familycametoseehim.buttheirvisitsgenerallyendedinrequeststohim formoremoney.Itoccurredto-him thattheonlyinteresttheyhadin himwaswhatmoneytheycouldget outofhim.
Mr.Crokerfollowedhisowncareer andthebentofhisowndesires,his familyhavingbrokenawayfromhi'm hisinterestinAmericabecameabated. andheboughtamansionandestateat Wantage.wherehewenttoliveafter theseparation.Hestartedaracing stablesat\Vantage,andintendedto livetheiruntil1904. Duringthe yearshelivedtherehefoundhimself lookeddownuponbysomepeoplesocially,andhewasnotalwaysmetin thesportingsipritthatmightheexpected.Hiseyeswereturnedtohis nativeland,andhemadeuphismind tocometoliveinIreland.Hethen boughtamagnificentplaceatGlencairn,wherehewenttolivein1905, andspentmostofhistimethere,goingtoAmericaonhisholidays.
ManyTroubles.
Mr.Crokercontinuedtodevotehis attentiontoracingandwontheDerby in1907.FindingdifficultyinmanaginghispropertyinAmerica,inDecember.1907,hegavehissonpowerof attorneytomanageallthepropertyin America.In1909thepowerofattorneywasextended,givingRichard,junior,completecontrolofalltheproperty,bankingaccounts.cheques,etc. InSeptember.1912,Richard,junior, boughtablockofpropertyinhisown name.Thisisablockofproperty knownasthewarehouseandvalued
Fromthatmanyothertroubleswith thechildrenarose.In1914,thefirst Mrs.Crokerdied,andbyherwillshe leftherestateofabout350,000dollars I equallybetweenherfourchildren,and appointedRichardandMrs.Ethel Whiteherexecutors.Thepositionof thefamilywasthatMr.Crokerwas practicallyaloneintheworld,although hisdaughterMrs.Morrishadalways beenongoodtermswithhim.On the26th.November.1914.hemarried hispresentwife.whowasthirtyyears ofageatthattimeandwenttoresidewithhimin"TheWigwam"at PalmBeach,wheresomeofthechildrenusedtogo.Mr.Crokerandhis secondwifecametoIrelandinApril, 1915,butbeforetheyleftNewYork. Richardtookhisfathertohisown lawyer,aMr.McConkey.andthe fathermadeawillunderwhichhe gavehissonRichardeverythinghe haei,andhecametoIrelandwithhis wife.
ViolentScenes.
LaterinNovember,sofarasthey knew,althoughtheyhadneverseen thedocument,Mr.Corkermadeawill inIrelandinwhichhelefthischildren 20.000dollarseachandthebalanceto hiswife.Thatwill,theybelieved, waspreparedbyMr.Miley,ofMessrs. MileyandMiley.solicitors,whoacted forMr.Crokerfrom1915.Mrs.Crokerneversawthatwill.Asregards theAmericanproperty,'theyknew thatMr.Crokerhadaskedhissonto explainbyletterwhatwashappening tohispropertyinAmerica,andwhat hewasdoingwithhisfather'smoney. Richardresentedthat,andMr.Croker wrotetothebankmanager,stating thathewantedquarterlystatements orreturns,andthebankmanagersent astatementofhisbankingaccount, butRichardinstructedthemanager toretainanychequesthatweredrawn byhimontheAgencyaccountincase theremightbeanydisputeabout chequesissuedbyhim(Richard).Mr. Crokerwentto.Americaaboutthepropertyin1916,andMrs.Crokerwould tellthemoftheviolentscenesthat tookplacebetweenhimandhischildren.Hehadcomplainedabout whatwasdoneinconnectionwithThe Warehouse-averyvaluableproperty forwhichhehadnotgotanaccount. Nothingcouldannoyamanmorethan anattemptofotherstoobtainpower overhisproperty.
NaggingforMoney.
Mr.CrokerleftNewYorkandwent to.PalmReach,wherehesawalawyerandtherewasalargecorrespondence.Thatwasthecommencement andthesourceofthetroublebetween thefatherandthechildren,whowere nowseekingtobreakhiswill.That broughtthemtotheendof1916.Dering1917therelationswerestrainedbetweenthefatherandsons-theywould godownandseehim,sayingthatthey hadnotenoughmoneytoliveonin NewYork.Asthetestatorsaidtohis wifeononeoccasion,Theynever comebuttheyarenaggingformoney." Fromthefather'spointofview-and downtothepresentmoment-hischildrenweretakingthepartofhisson Richardagainsthim.Aquestionwas raisedastowhetherthetestatorhad powertorevokehissonRichard'strusteeship,buthedidrevokeit.Hesaid hewassorryhehadnotkeptallhis propertyunderhisowncontrol.The childrenkeptonworryinghimabout thesethings,andfinally,inNovember. 191:.herevokedthetrustandcan celledRichard'spowertodealwithhis property.ThesonRichardsaid: "Whetheryourevokeitornot,Iwill neverletthemoneyintoyourhands."
"HarassedIntoGrave."
Theyharassedthemaninhisold age-harassedhimalmostintohis grave-andoneofthethingstheyannoyedhimwithwasthathehadno righttorevokethistrust.Herevokedthetrustandherevokedhis will.HewenttohislawyeratPalm Beachandexecutedawillunderwhich hegaveeachofhischildrenonly1,000 dollars-about£200.Hegavehissolicitor5,000dollarsandleftthebalance -Glencairnandtheresidueofhisproperty,tohiswifewhohadstuckto sawinthenewspapersthathisown
himthroughhistroubles,asawife shoulddo.And,counselasked,wasit notaperfectlynaturalthingtodo? Theywerenotconsideringwhetherit wasanaturalthingtodo,butthey wereconsideringtheman'scapacity.liewouldsatisfythejurythatthe testatorhadamplereasontobedissatisfiedwithhischildren,andfinally hecutthemnutofhiswillaltogether. Inleavingthem1.000dollarseachhe wasactingaswouldanordinaryman incuttingthemoffwithashilling,and finallyheleftthemoutofthewillaltogether.ThewillofNovember, 1917.definitelyearmarkedtheepoch whenRichardCrokerdefinitelyturned hisestatefromhischildren.His fatherlyaffectionhadstooduntoldannoyance.Thetestatorremainedat PalmReachuntilJune.1919,andfor 18monthslonger,andduringthat timeheboughtconsiderableproperty atPalmReachinMrs.Croker'sname. HepurchasedthatpropertyatPalm Beachinsuchawaythathischildren couldmakenoclaimuponit. WritsServed.
Mr.Crokerwantedtodealwithhis Trishpropertyinthesameway,and hewrotetoMr.Miley,solicitor,in May.1919,andMr.Mileyprepareda deedassigningGlencairntoMrs. Crokerinasimilarmannertohisother property.In1917and1918heseemed tothinkthathisthreechildrenbad bytheirconductforfeitedallclaim uponhim.

1919Mr.CrokerleftPalmBeach,Florida,forNewYork.onhiswaytoIreland.WhenhearrivedinNewYork onJune3hewasmetbyhissonRichard,andtherewasaviolentaltercationbetweentheminthewayofarguingovertheproperty.andhethreatenedtotakeanactionagainsthis father.Thatnight,at11o'clock, threewritsfromtheAmericancourts wereservedonthedeceasedbytheordinaryprocessattheSavoyHotel, NewYork-onefor£10,000forlibelallegedtobecontainedinaletterwrittentoMrs.White;onefor150,000dollars,moneyallegedtohavebeenadvancedandputintothedeceasedbusiness:andonefor80,000dollarsthat thefatherhadagreedtogivetoHowardandEthelifRichardgavethe same.These wereservedpersonally,andthejuryknewthatamongstpersonsofreputeandstanding thesepaperspassedbetweenlawyers, butwhenonewantedtoinsultapersonandshowtheirvenomtheysent theprocess-servertodoit.Whenthe writswereservedinthepubliclounge oftheSavoyHotel,Mr.Crokerbecame nearlydemented.Hethrewthewrits fromhim,andscarcelysleptthat night.HeleftNewYorknextmorn ing,andwhenhereachedIrelandhe
sonhadmarkedjudgmentagainstham onthethreewrits.Ultimatelyhis lawyersappliedforleavetodefend. andthejudgmentsweresetasideuntil anewtrialwouldcomeon.These werethings.saidSerjeantHanna,that wenttomakethedeceaseddrawup thewillthatwasbeingcontested.
LongLitigation.
SerjeantHannathenoutlinedthe willthatwasdrawnupin1919byMr. McDonald,solicitor,andthetransfer. enceofalltheproperty.Thewillwas executedinGlencairn,andthejury wouldhaveevidencebeforethemthat Mr.Crokerwasasclearinhismind, assoundinmemory,andableto transactbusinessasanypersonin court.Onthatoccasionhesaidtohis wifethathetookverygoodcarethat noneofhischildren'snameswouldappearinthewilloronanypieceof paper,andhegaveheraletterfrom thedaughterFlorencetobehandedto hersoshemightreceive£10,000onhis death. Therewasalonglitigation.Aremarkabledevelopmentthentookplace.
Onthe13th.March,1920,Richardbeganproceedingsagainsthimtoset asideallhisdealingswithhisproperty inPalmBeachandIrelandinwhich Mrs.Crokerwasmentioned,foraninjunctiontorestrainhisfather,alleg ingthathewasincapableofmanaginghisaffairsandthatallthedeeds executedwereduetotheundueinfluenceandfraudofMrs.Croker.Well. hewentintothewitnessboxandwas examinedfortendays,attheendof whichthejudgecametotheconclusionthathewasperfectlysoundand capable.Hewasthenpossibly70 yearsofage,andhemetthesuggestionindignantly,forhewasastrong manfromthecradletothegrave.And onthe12thJulytheactionwasdismissed.Therewere,(-ounce]saida largenumberofaeons-whichhere (erredto.Afterthattheoldman camebacktospendtherestofhislife inthesunshineoftheDublinMountains.Buthehadtogooveragain in1921.comingbackonthe10th.Novemberofthesameyear.

ThenameofthetownwasPoplar Creek.Goingdownthereafewdays later,hefounditacharmingplace. likeapainter'sdreamofbeauty.The Creekhadbeautifuleddieswherethe waterwasdark,withcreamysurfaceripples,overhungwithbendingwillow houghsandfringedwithyellowing grasses.Itdriftedonthroughthe littletown.aserenecongeriesofsmall houses,itsmainstreetmarkedatintervalsbystatelypoplars.whichhad giventheplaceitsname.Stiff,unbending.pointingtotheheavensperpetually.theyseemedliketirelesssentinelskeepingwatchandwardoverthe hamlet.Andyettheirleafage-ever inasensitiveflutterprivedthemkeenlyalivetoeverybreeze-toevery lightestl:reathfromtheskies.
