l'heSeventh,headedbytheircaptain, B.Campbell,preparedtobat.The openingbatsmenwereShineandGrogan.These,however,soonfellunder theattackofDowsettandTulloch twojuniorfirstelevenmen.Captain Campbellmadeafinestandfor57. whileProsserbattedwellfor26.Most oftheothersfellquickly,leavingthe totalat140.Playwascontinuedthe followingday,whenCampbell'steam tookthefield.Undertheattackof GormanandGrogantheSixthitesfell quicklywithatotalof89.Gorman, whodidthemostdamagewiththe lien, securedfourwicketsfora meagresumofruns.Inthesecond inningsthesamepairopenedforthe Seventh.butShinewasdismissedlieforehereacheddoublefigures.Groganblockedwellforasolid20,while Cantwellhithardandwellfor66.B. Campbell,whowasinlowdown,had noonetokeephimin,andmade34 notout.Theinningsclosed.leaving theSixthasumof240runstowin. Theireffortshavebeenstimulated byanunprecedentedcampaignofpropagandacarriedonbytheGerman NationalistPartythroughoutGermany,butparticularlyintheRhineland,withtheobjectofattracting CatholicvoterstotheNationalist ranks.AspecialdivisionoftheNationalistPartyhas.beenorganisedto includeallofitsCatholicmembers Meetingsarebeingheldthroughout theCologneandAix-la-Chapelledistricts,andeveryinducementisbeing offeredtothecitizenstobecomeNationalists.Nationalistspeakers,one ofwhomistheformerLordMay-:r WalruffofCologne,havebeenaddressingaudiencesthroughoutthis territory.Ontheotherbandthe Centristpapersarepointingouttothe electoratethattheestablishmentfa CatholicbranchoftheNationalist partyisunnecessaryanduseless,since theCentrePartyitselfhasstoodfor Catholicinterestsanddesiresfur manyyears,andisinapositionto continuetodosoto-day. ThereisnodenyingthattheCentre isfacetofacewithaserioussituation. Itlostmanyofitsmembersatthe timeitdecidedtoworkincooperation-withtheSocialists.Moreover,it isconstantlybeingdescribeddisparaginglyasthe"partyofthework. men"which,tendstoalienatethesupportofotherclasses.Those ho leavethepartyonthataccount,as wellasthosewhoobjectedLithe workingarrangementwiththeSocialists,aremostlikelytojointheNationalistswhentheyleavetheCentre andtheconsequencehasbeenthatthe formerpartyhasgainedalinestdirectlyasthelatterhaslost. TheCentristDeputy,Dr.Lauscher, aCatholicpriest,andaProfessorat theUniversityofBonn,,speakingat arecentmeetinghere,outlinedthe situationasfollows: "TheGermanpoliticalbodyhas becomeill,deathly andthemost horriblethingaboutitistheapostasyofthemassesfromtheethicalorder,fromthevivifyingprinciplesof Christianity.TheCentrePartyin thefirstplaceisthepartyofChristiancultureandcivilisation.TodetendChristianprinciplesisitsprimarypurpose.WeneedtheCentretonaymorethaneverbefore;weneed itbecausethepoliticaleconomicand socialnecessitiesofthedayimperiouslycallforastrongpartyrepresentingthemoderateelements.
