Now.becauseourfaithisfirmand thricefastenedweshallnot,justnow, considertheproofs,soabundantby God'sgrandprovidence,ofthehistoricalfactoftheResurrection,butshall. instead,encourageourselvestowalk inthewayofGod'swill,afterHim whohaslefttoustheinspiringmessagethatHehis"Gonebeforeusinto Galilee." Dowerealisethatthisisthegreat, inspiringordertoadvance.whichJesus triumphantandRisen.haslefttoyou andtome?Christlived,andsuffered,anddied,andtriumphed,giving usanexample,thatasHehasdonewe alsomaydo,andtheonegreatevent whichisbeforeusallisthattremendousmeetinginthefuture.withChrist Whohas"gonebeforeusintoGalilee."
Weknownothingofwhatthelength ofourlivesisdestinedtobe,weknow nothingofthedetailsofthehappeningsthataretomakeupthehours,or days,oryears,thatmaybeourfuture,because,asSt.Augustinereminds us,itisonlythepresentmomentwe arecertainofpossessingbutofall thatiscertain,andinspiteofwhatis uncertain,clear,andsheer,aboveand beyondeverythingthatweknowor imagine,isthatcertaintrystwhich Christhasappointedforeachofus, evenasHeappointedthemeetingwith HisdisciplesandPeterinGalilee.
And,whatofthatmeeting?Letus lookforwardtoitwithverygreathope. TheResurrectionofChristwasthe signandthesignal,andtheproof,that JesusHimselfappealedto,asthemost convincingactthatshouldshowlIis Divinity,andwhyhadHesufferedand diedandrisen?Inorderthatwe mighthavelife,andmighthaveit abundantly.Thehopeofmankind liesittthemysteryoftheResurrection.itisbecauseofthetruthofthe Resurrectionthatwecansay,"Thisis ourGod,ourGoduntoeternity.We havewaitedforHim,andHewillsave us."TherearetwowarningsinHoly Scripture,thataresometimescalculatedtomaketimoroussoulsfearovermuch-"Manknote-ethnotwhetherhe beworthyofloveorofhatred,"andthe wellweighedwordsofSt.Paul,whereinwearecounselled"Toworkoutour salvationinfearandtrembling."But thelightofthefirstEastermorning teachesus,thatthoughourpastlives havebeensuchastomakeusfear, thatthebestwecansayofthesisis, "0,myGod,Iamheartilysorry,"and iltiiughthepresentfindsusfarremov edfromthehighleveloftheperfect standardoftheChristian,webasestill God'sbestgiftbeforeus-thefuture Thefutureistheonegrandthingof allGod'sgifts,oilwhichmenhave notlaiddesecratinghands.All"tine hopeofGod"iswrappedupinit.as thepromiseoffruitage.inthebudand theunfoldingblossom.Godintends itsthatbeautifulfuturetimetoefface thescarsandthescores,thatarethe weary,wearing,resultsofsin,whichwe feelinsoulandbody.Godintendsin thatbeautifulfuturetimetowinus, andweanus,awayfromtheworld,so that,being"risenwithChrist,"wemay "seekthethingsthatareabove."In thissplendidwork-"HisFather'sBusiness"-itmaybethatwemustdrink withHimsomeoftheChaliceofHis Passion.Itmaybethatsomeofthe sorrowsthatharrowedtheneartsof HieholyMother,aretobepartofthe preparationthatshallmakeusfitfor ourshareinthetriumphofHisResurrection.ItmaybethanHetrust "charthewood,ereHecanlimnwith it."butthepowerthatHeproved Himselftohave,andthepromiseof participationinthetriumphtiftheResurrection-"Iwillraisehimupontine lastday"---mustalwaysbethepotent stayandsupportofthestruggling Christianstrivingandsucceedires, eventhough"resistinguntoblood,' alongthewayofthesorrowfulmysteriesoflife.Theroadofthosesorrowfulmysteriesleadsthroughthegreat EastertriumphofourSaviour,for."if wehavesufferedwithHimwestri" alsobeglorifiedwithHim." WhenMgr.Seipelwasplacedatthe headoftheAustrianGovernment. opinionwaspracticallyunanimous thattheGovernmentwasfastapproachinguttercollapse.Forthis reason,eventheSocialistswereanxioustohavetheCatholicprelateassume theresponsibilitiesofoffice.Having beendrivenfromcontroloftheGovernmentintheelectionsofDecember, 1924theSocialistsacteduponthe theorythatthequickestwayforthem toregaintheupperhandinAustria wouldbetohaveaprominentCatholic leaderincontrolwhentheanticipated break-upcame.
ACatholicprelatewastodigthe graveofAustria,scco-dingtotheir plans,andafterthesmashcame,all theelementsofanti-ciericalismwereto bearousedtopreparethewayforthe finalSocialisticconquestofthe(onstitution,publicinstitutioris.Andthe schools.
EvenamongCatholicstherewere manywhowerefearfulthatthesituationwashopeless,andtheywerenot desirousofhavingapriestasChancellorwhentheStatesufferedthecoy lapsethatwasthen toIvinevitable Mgr.Seipel'sTriumph. Butatthismomentofgreatestdespair.Mgr.Seipel,undismayedand determine91,beganhisworkforthe salvation'ofAustria.Hemanagedto overcometheantagonismsamongthe EuropeanPowers.andtounitethem atasessionoftheLeagueofNations inGenevaforjointactioninbehalfof Austria.Athome,hesucceeedin arousingthewillingnessandenthusiasmofthepeopletosustainthemin thesesacrificesandeffortswhich,togetherwiththeaidfromtheothernations,arenowbringingaboutthere constructionofAustria,andareexpectedtorestoretheeconomicequilibriumofthenationwithinthenext twoyears. Withoutgoingintodetailsofthe politicalsituation,itissufficientto pointoutthateventheChancellor's mostradicalSocialistopponentshave finallybeenforcedbyasenseofpul.lieopiniontosupporthiswork,and tosubmittohisleadership.
Inordertoappreciatethemagnitudeanddifficultyofhistask,itis necessarytorecallthesitgationthat existedwhenhetookoverthereins ofGovernment.Atthattimethe formerlyhonestandefficientadministrationofGovernmentalaffairshadbecomecorruptanddisorganised;there wasnorecognisedauthority.theGovernmentandParliamentbeingruled bythemobsinthestreet;theState Treasurywasempty,andeachmonth thepublicdebtwasmountinghigher andhigher.Premier'sAppeal. Onlyamanofstrongmoralforce. andonewhowasabsolutelyabovethe suspicionofselfishpersonalinterests, couldsucceedundersuchcircumstances,andthenonlyifhewereableto commandtheimplicitconfidenceofthe people.
Toarousethepeople,Mgr.Seipel addressedforty-threelargepubli. meetingsinsevenweeks.Someof themeetingsweresolargethathewas forcedtosneaktwoorthreetimes fromdifferentplacesinorderthatall mighthear.Manymeetingswere heldintheopen,evenduringthewinter,becausethecrowdsweresovast thatnohallcouldbefoundtoaccommodatethem.Frequentattemptswere madebytheSocialiststobreakup thesemeetingsbyforce,buttheywere unsuccessful. ThecollapseoftheCoalitionGover atBelgrade.withtheconsequentdissolutionoftheSkupshtina 'Parliament),anddecreefornewelections,bringsgeneralrelieftothecomplicatedsituationinJugo-slavia.That wingofthelateCoalitionCabinet whichhaddistinguisheditselfbyits hostilitytoCatholicshasnoplacein thepresentprovisionalGovernment, whichisformed.however,ofOrthodox Serbs.withoneexception,aDalmatian Catholic.MostoftheseSerbshail fromtheformerKingdomofSerbia, andnotfromthelandslatelybelonging toAustria-Hungary,whereantagonism hasnotvetsubsidedbetweenSerbs andCroats.AmongthenewministersareseveraladherentsofSteyan Pretitchwhohasalwaysshownfair playtoCatholicsandrecognisesthe factthat,indealingwithCroatia,Catholicinterestsdarenotbeoverlooked.
TheinternalproblemsoftheKingdomofSerbs,Croats,andSlovenes maybegatheredfromthefollowing summaryofamanifestojustissuedby theCatholic,orPopularParty,whose leaderisaSolvenepriest,theRev. AntonKoroshets:
"ThePopularPartyhasconsistently advocatedlocalautonomyinpolitical, economicalandculturalfields,forall branchesofournation. Ourcampaignwasopposedbyadeceptive.demagogicgroup,thatstrainedafterthe unattainable,anddeludedthepeople ofCroatia.Differentpoliticalparties nowrecognisethejusticeofourstandpointthatfraternalunderstanding cannotbereachedeitherbycrudecentralisationthatmakesonebranchof theraseparamount,orbyamputation ofanymemberfromtherest;bothof whichpoliciesplayintothehandsof ournationalenemies. Again,theAgriculturalpartywhich supportedtheCentralistsdarenot showitselfto-dayinasingleCroat village;whiletheunworthySlovenes whoclaimedtodobetterforSlovenia thanthe"Clerical"partyhavecome togriefonthematteroftheirown personaladvancement.ThePopular partystandsforcompletereligious equality,andtoleranceinthewidest sense.Itfearlesslycombatedthe "PulpitClause,"whichhamperedministersofallcreedsintheexerciseof theirduties.Itfoughtagainstthe unjustsuppressionoftheMarianCongregations,theSoladities,whichwere ofapurelydevotionalnature.and againstStateneglectofCatholicculturalfoundations,restrictedintheir activitiesforlackofmeans.Thelate GovernmentwentsofarinitsantiCatholicpolicyastoforbidpriestsof theVoyvodina,formerlyaprovinceof Hungary,fromteachingcatechismin theschools.ItdelayedtheappointmentofBishopstovacantSees,and stintedtheallowancetotheclergy whileStatemoneywasspentinassistinganti-CatholicagitationinCzechoslovakia.Governmentagentswere alsosenttounderminetheloyaltyof theUniatesorGreekCatholicsinthe Carpathianswhoareincommunion withRome.Juvenileorganisations foundedonanon-religiousbasiswere encouraged,whilesimilarorganisations ofCatholicswereignored.
