Withregretwehavetochroniclethe departureofBrotherRupertfrom NewNerciaforGlenelg.S.A.,andue mustcongratulatetheMaristBrothers ofthatcentreforthisacquisitionto theirCollegestaff.BrotherRupert didnotremainlongwithUsatSt.11dephonsus-onlytwoshortyears;but withinthisbriefspaceheendeared himselftoallwithoutexception.By hisfellowBrothersattheCollegehe wasbeloved,asonecouldnotfailto seeataprivatesend-offtheBrothers gavehimashewasabouttodepart.
BrotherGuibertus.theDirector,spoke feelinglyofhowsorryhewastolose theservicesofBrotherRupert.and howtheywouldallmisshishearty, breezylaughandgenialsmile-butthe fiathadgoneforth,andhemustgo. BrotherAndrew,onbehalfoftheBrothers,alsospokeinsorrowfultones. BrotherRupert.inreply,declared "howsorry tohavetoleave St.Ildephonsus,emphasisingthefact thathe-neverbeforein20years'experiencehadthehappinesstomeet suchaharmonious,obligingcommunityofBrothersashewasleavingbehold."NowonderI'msorryto leave WedonotmeetBrotherRupert's likeoften--eveninalife-time.Bright, cheerful,candid.withhonestywrit largeoneveryfeature.hecapturesat firstinterviewtheconfidenceofeveryonewithwhomhecomesincontact. Oneinstinctivelyrecognisesthatthe erectandpowerfulphysiqueisbuta fittingcasementforthegenerousand greatsoulwithin.Equippedwith suchrarequalitiesofsoul,andhighly trainedasateacher,onecanhardly estimatethegreatpowerforgoodsuch ateacherwieldsoveralargecollegeof Australianboys.BrotherRupert's characterandmannerfits.inexactly withthesystemoftheMaristBrothersinthemanagementanddisciplineoftheirboyswheresomuchdependsonhonourandmanlyprinciple incontradistinctiontotheoldsystem ofphysicalpunishment.Indeedthe Maristsasawholegettheverybest that'sintheboysoutofthem,onthese soundprinciplesoftruth.honour,and uprightmanlyconduct.Theboyson theirreturnwillfeelsoreonseeing BrotherRupert'scandlestickremoved. EversincethefirstNlarists,Brothers StanislausandSebastiansetfeeton NewNorciasoil,uptothepresentDirector,Bro.Guibertus,included,with hisefficientstaff.St.Ildephonsushas beenmostfortunateintheexcellent typeofteachingBrotherssenthere. ForthiswehavetothankBrother Clement.Provincial;yetwefeelinclinedtothankhimmuchmorefor hisgivingthanforhistakingaway. ButBrotherClement,whenbetakes agreatfavouriteaway.invariably sendsdagoodBrothertoreplacehim. WhenBrotherGeorgewasleavingthe crywas"Wecannevergetanother BrotherGeorge."ThenBrotherBorgiacame,andlo!BrotherBorgiascoredquiteasgoodasBrotherGeorge. LikeBrotherRupert.everyonewas broken-heartedafterBrotherBorgia. SEND-OFFTOFATHERTYMONS.
AttheConventHall,onthe23rd. ult..therewasalargegatheringofthe congregationofSt.FrancisXavier's Cathedral,totenderavaledictoryto theRev.FatherTymons.whohas beenappointedtothechargeofthe ThreeSpringsParish.Mr.J.M.Drew occupiedthechair.Onhisrightwas theguestoftheevening,andonhis lefttheRev.FatherPrendergast.The
adjacentchairswerefilledbyMessrs. P,Stone,T.R.deLucey,J.Teehan'R. Tindal,andJ.W.Griffin. TheChairman-inexplainingtheobjectofthegathering,saidthat,as waswellknowntothemtheyhad mettodohonourtoFatherTymons, whowasabouttobetransferredto ThreeSprings.afterhavingrendered goodservicetotheChurchandConventduringhiscomparativelybrief stayintheirmidst.FatherTymons hadbyhiskindlymannerandgenial ways,wontheaffectionofthepeople.Hehadbeenzealousinthedischargeofhisreligiousfunctions,and theyhadalladmiredthewisdomand tactwhichhailgovernedhisactions. Norcouldtheyforgetthegoodwork hehaddoneinconnectionwiththe CathedralandConventBazaar.the successofwhich,atatimewhenmuch financialdepressionprevailed,was largelyduetotheeffortsofFathers PrendergastandTymunswhoworkedtogetherinunity,andneverrelaxedtheirexertionsfromfirsttolast.
FatherTymonswasleavingthem.He hadtogotoThreeSprings.whereduty calledhim,andtheywouldbewanting ingratitudeiftheydidnuttakesome stepstoshowtheirappreciationofthe goodaorkhehaddone.Thechairmanconcludedbyexpressingthehope thatFatherTymonswouldbegiven healthandstrengthtopursuehissacredcallingtothefullextentofhis desires,andthatthedaywouldnot befardistantwhenhewouldbeback attheseatofthedioceseagain.
TheRev.FatherPrendergast.and Messrs.Stone,deLucey,Teehan.Donovan,GriffinandTindalsupportedthe remarksofthechairman,andpaida hightributetoFatherTymons'excellentqualities.which.itwasstated, wererecognisedbyeveryclassand creedinGeraldton. TheChairmanthenpresentedFather Tymonswithawalletofnotesonbehalfofthecongregation. FatherTymonsinreply,saidthat atoneperiodofhislifehebadhadhis Photographtaken.Theartisthad gonetogreatpainstoproduceapre sentablepictuie,andhehadsucceeded.Thephotographshowedavery handsomeman(laughter?,butitwas notafaithfulrepresentationofhimself.Ithadbeentouchedupbyskilfulhands.Thevariousspeakershad drawnapictureofhimthatnight; eachonegaveitsomefreshembellishment.Hecouldonlywishthatitwas acorrectportrayalofhimself.buthe wasafraiditwasnot.Hereciprocatedthekindlysentimentsexpressed towardshim.HewasleavingGeraldtonwithregret.Helovedits beautifulbay.withitsbroadexpanse ofwater,andhelikedthepeople,from whomhehadreceivednothingbut kindness.Ithadbeenapleasure alsoforhimtohavetoministerto them.Theyweresogood.Hehad, however,torespondtothecallof duty.HehadtogotoThreeSprings. andmadeanefforttoreducethedebt onthechurchthere.Thelargeattendanceoftheparishionerswhohad assembledtodohimhonour.hevery muchappreciated,andhehadto thankthemforthewalletofnotes, whichtheyweregenerousenoughto presenthimwith,andwhichhehad notexpected.(Applause.) Thespeecheswereinterspersedwith musicalitems.andatthecloserefreshmentswerehandedroundbythe ladies.FatherTymonsleftnext morningforhisnewsphereoflabour, LEEDERVILLE.

Bro.GalvinreportedontheactivitiesoftheMetropolitanSportsCommittee,anditwasdecidedtonominatetwomen'steamsandoneladies' teamfortheshootingcompetition.He alsoreportedthatacricketmatch hadbeenplayedonthepreviousSundayagainstthe"Rovers."alocalcombination,andthebranchteamhad scoredavictory.Afurthermatch withthe"Rovers"wasarrangedfor Sundaynext,the4th.inst.,atthe Loftus-streetpitchwhenmembersare askedtorollupinfullforce.
Thebranch'schallengetothe C.Y.L.C.todebateonthequestion, "ShouldBachelorsbeTaxed?"was acceptedbythelattersocietyandwill takeplaceonFriday,February9,at theC.Y.L.C.Rooms,Hay-street.The branch'steamwillcompriseBros.J. Edwards.F.McAdam,andF.Vernier. Themembersarcappealedtobepresentandsupporttheirrepresentatives onthisoccasion. ThePresidentreferredinfeeling termstothedeathofourlaterevered Chaplain-Dr.Kennedy,andpaida fittingtributetohissplendidcharacteristicsasapriestandfriend,and stressedthegreatlossthesocietyhad sustainedbytheDoctor'suntimelydemise.Itwasdecidedtosendaletter ofcondolencetohisGracetheArchbishop.Thememberspresentunanimouslyexpressedtheirardentdesire toplaceinthenewchurchwhen erectedsomefittingmemorialtothe lateDoctor,andthePresidentand Bro.Edwardsweredeputedtosee FatherMoloneyandascertainhis viewsastotheformthatthememorialshouldtake.Thishasbeendone, andFatherMoloneyexpressedhis keenpleasureattheactionofthe branch.andpromisedhiswholeheartedco-operationandsupport.The formofthememorialwillbedecided lateron,butthefinancingoftheprojectwillbeocmmencedatonce.and itisconfidentlyexpectedthatabeautifulandsuitablememorialwillbe provided.
