Theannualentertainmentgivenby thechildrenof6t.Joseph'sOrphanage lotgirlsataublaLu,waspresentedto alargeaudienceatIllsMajestys'IhefareunMondaynightlast.St.Joseph'sIstheoldestCatholicinstitution intheState,andastheyearsadvance sodoestangibleevidenceincreasethat superiorinstruction,muralwell-being, andrefinementaremarkswhichcharacterisetheCatholicsystemofmak inglitandpropercitizensofthechildrencommittedtothecareofour teachingOrders,andinwhichtheSistersofMercyplayaverylargepart.
Inapublicdemonstrationoftalent itwouldbedifficultfuranycumbina tiontooutclassourinstitutions.Muir daynight'sconcertwasworthyofa packedhouse,butasitwasitishoped thattheSisterswillnetagoodretura St.Joseph'sOrchestrasuppliednoless thanfiveitems,allnicelyrendered. Thesingingof"LittleMothers'and "AngelsofLight"wasverygood.The chorus."MyOwnAustralianStates'in thesecondhalfwassplendid,butatiptopchoralnumber,"How'dyouliketo beababygirl?"wonenthusiasticapplause,resultinginanencorebeing given.AclogandaTambourinedance weresplendidlyexecuted,theSkipping RopeDance,however,beingloudly andinsistentlyapplauded,hadtob..1 givenasecondtime.TheDrillnumberswerealsoexcellentexhibtions.of physicalculture.TheWandDrill finishedwiththefavouriteIrishJig. whichpleasedtheentireaudience. Greatcreditandduepraisemust bepaidtotheSistersforthepresentationofsuchanenjoyableentertainment,andtoMissP.Esler,dancing mistress;Lieut.Emmott,drillinstructor,andMr.M.O'Neill,orchestraconductor. Collegewereforcedtoputupastrong defenceforthegreaterpartofthe quarter,andMaunsellandCa-upbell didsoindeterminedfashion.Each timeCollegeattackedGehlwaswaitingtoreceivefromtherucks,who wereplaying(strongly,urfr3mW. Bryantatcentre,andkickedthree goalsinasmanyshots.JerryClune wasgatheringintheballlowdown, andsendingonwithastrongwind. PatLanigansecuredfromhimand kickedasixpointer.Plainswould havescoredmorefreelyinthisquarteriftheyhadnotpersistedsomuch inrunningwiththeballandfinishing withoutakick,inspiteofthepowerfulbreezetohelpthem.Thescores atquartertimewere:Plains,3.3;College,3.0. Thesecondstretchwaseasilyto College.Withastrongdefence,and thewindintheirfavour,Collegeattacked.Agoalimmediatelycame fromthecharge,andMcGuireatthe otherend,afteracleverrunkickeda finegoalfromadifficultangle.This wasPlains'onlyscoreforthequarter. Collegeshootingbecameabiterratic, butAbbottandGuhl,with2goals each.andVClunewithone,raisedthe twoflags,thoughseveralotherswent astrayAsharpshowerinthisquarterdampedtheardourofthespectatorsforawhile,buttheplaysuffered littleAthalf-timethescoresshowedCollegeexactlytwicetheiropponents'score-843to4.3. Thethirdquarterbeganwithbright sunshineagainandlittleornobreeze. Theplayhadmoresparkle,andseveral zig-zagchainsofmarkscombinedfrom endtoendgaveCollegeacoupleof goals.Plainsthenbecamemorealert indefence,andAndyLanigan,Bob Lanigan,andJerryClynebeatoffrepeatedattacks.Somefinestruggles tookplaceonthewingbetweenJ. ButlerandKelliher,withtheformer abittoopersistent;withJameshe wasaboutthebestbattleramongthe placedmen.M.Campbellnotched anothergoalforCollege.andPlains_ herespoiltafinechancewithtoomuch handpassinginthecentrelines. Lynchbrothersclearedtheback Plains'linebykicksingoodtime,and nomorescoreresultedintheterm. WiththePlainsabout5goalsbehind,theirattackstartedoffsuccessfullywithafewgoalsearlybythe Laniganbrothers.Guhlwonbackthe lossbyanothergoodgoal,andJim Cluneaddedasecondone.Raffin broughtoffafewsplendidhighmarks andbootedhard,butthescoreremainedunchanged.Jameskickeda,Collegegoal,andgavePlainsnolonger anyhopeofpickinguptheleeway, thoughtheyplayedfreshlyuptothe calloftime.ForthelosersJerry Clunewasthemainstay,whileBoband AndyLaniganplayedfineopenfoot ball.T.Kelly,inruck,withoutshiningout,didalotofheavywork,and E.Suarez,J.Thompson,T.andP.
