MissRoseTwomey,ofBairnsdale, receivedthehabitofreligionatthe ConventofNotreDamedeSion,Sale,recently,andtookthenameofSister MarieIldephonsus.BishopPhelan wasassistedintheceremonybythe Rev.FatherP.Kilduff. Thesystemofprivateinterpretation oftheBible,saysDr.Mannix,had beentriedfor400years.Peoplehad thoughtthattheworldcouldgoon betterwithoutanyinfallibleteaching; thattheBiblewasquitesufficientwithouttheteachingauthorityofthe Church.Itmighthavebeenpossible tobelievethat400yearsago,butnobodycouldbelieveitnow.Those whocalledthemselvesChristians,but werenotCatholics.weredividedinto innumerablesects,andeveninone secttherewerescarceiytwopeoplebelievingexactlythesameandtaking preciselythesamemessagefrom Christ'smessage.Surelythatwasnot whatChristintended,anditwasnot whattheso-calledReformerslooked forwardto.Christhadprayedthat theunionofIllsfollowerswouldbe suchthatwouldinsomewayrepresent thesubstantialunionbetweenGodthe FatherandGodtheSon,andthatit wouldbesostrikingastobeaproofofChrist'sDivinity.
