MissAgnesMurphy.whowrotethe biographyofMelba,andwhoconductedherbusinessaffairsformanyyears hasarrivedinBrisbanetocompletearrangementsfortheSistineChoirconcerts.MissMurphyhasbeenconnectedwithsomeofthemostnotable musicalenterprisesofthelasttwo decades,andiswidelyknowninmany countriesasawriter,traveller,organ iser,andpublicspeaker.

TheBrisbane"DailyStandard"has givesasmashingreplytothelying sectarianpamphletissuedbyauthorityoftheQueenslandProtestantLabourCouncil,Brisbane,G.P.O.,BoxNo. 1006,"andheaded"Labourites-Protestants-Awaken."Thepamphletwas issuedwithoutanimprint,andits author,ofauthors,hadn'tthecourage tofatherit.Itwasthrownlikea disownedmongrelpuponthepublic doorsteptoworkwhatevermischiefit mightbysecretassistanceoflocalbigctry. McDonnellandEast,'Ltd.,thewell knownBrisbanefirm,haveonexhibitioninoneoftheirwindows,afine sampleofsoundlint,whichistaken fromaquiltthatwasmadeinIpswich ,50yearsago.Inaddition,too,there aresamplesofcalicoes,sheetings,towellings,Turkishandhoneycombquilts cordage,spindlebinding,ropes,schnap perlines,alloflocallygrowncotton andmanufacturedintheQueensland CottonFactoryinIpswich30years ago.Theyarealsoshowingachild's dress,thestuffthroughoutofwhichis madeofQueenslandcotton.Fouror fiveyearsago,whentheAgricultural Departmentfirstdealtwiththecotton crop,itwasimpossibletoplacethe cottonlintinAustralia.Thisfirm withcommendableenterprise,jumped into'thebreachandboughtthewhole crop,amountingtoaboutsixtonsof cottonlint,andatonceestablishedan industryforthemakingof"Dura-lite' Quilts,whichtheyhavenowpatented inAustralia.ThesequiltsaresomewhataftertheHomeEiderdownquilts andtheJavadownandkapocs,but theyareapureAustralianproduct, thewholefillingofthequiltbeingof Queensland-growncotton.

OneofthemosthighlyesteemedresidentsofRockhampton,inthepersoq ofMr.WilliamMcGrath,passedaway recentlyattheadvancedageof75 years.HewasanativeofScariff, CountyClare.Ireland.

FatherCassar,ofRockhampton,was abletocelebrateMassattheMater HospitalonAscensionThursday,and isnowalmostcompletelyrecovered. Allhisfriendsarepleasedtoseethis venerablepriestatworkagain.

FatherJ.WalshC.SS.R.,gavethe occasionaladdressattheannualGeneralCommunionoftheKnightsofthe BlessedSacramentatSt.Stephen'sCa. Ihedralrecently.FatherWalshwas enrolledaKnightinBelfastin1916. lieprefacedhissermonbywarmcongratulationstothoseassembled,who bytheirattendancethereshowedsuch aninspiringfidelitytotheWordof HonourtheyhadgiventotheEu charisticKing.Takingashistext St.John'swords:"Hewasinthe worldandtheworldwasmadeby Him,andtheworldknewHimnot.' liepreacherspokeeloquenalyabout thehiddenKing,Whomtheworld knowssolittleabout.Hedescribed theheroicfidelitytotheBlessedSacramentoftheyoungpatronofthe Knighthood,St.Tarcisius.Thisnoble Romanyouth,duringtheDiocletian persecution,thoughaboyofonly14 years,hadbeenentrustedwiththe dangeroustaskofcarryingtheBlessed Sacramenttoapsisonthroughthe streetsofpaganRome.Carryinghis preciousTreasureclosetohisbreast, hewassetuponbyamobofpagan boys,whotriedtorobhimoftheBless. edSacrament,or,astheycalledit theGodoftheChristians.Tarcisius faithfultohischarge,endsoonerthan. releasethearmsthatwereclasped overhisT'easure,allowedhimselftc bebeatentodeath.Ashefelltothe groundaChristiansoldierarrivedon thescene,justintimetoreceivethe BlessedSacramentasTarcisiusbreathedhislast.TheKnighthood,said FatherWalsh,isgoingtodoagreat cleal-aotonlyfortheBlessedSacrament,betforeverycountrywhereis isestablished.TheworldwantssomethingtobringithacktoitsCreator andtheKnighthood,pleaseGod,will doit.

Dr.Dwyer.BishopofWagga,celebratedhissilverjubileeonthe6th. inst.Hewasconsecratedbythelate CardinalMoranonJune6,1897.Dr. Dwyerhasspent40yearsinthepriesthood,andthewholeofthetimeinthe DioceseofMaitland.Hehasthe uniquedistinctionofbeingthefirst Australian-bornpries*raisedtothe purpleinAustralia.Abiographical

ofself.Inhisprivatelife heiswhollyunselfish,kind,andconsiderate.Admultosannos.

Mr.S.J.Carlton,thewell-known ownerofPineBrushStation,Williams River,diedrecentlyafteracoupleof daysillness.Thesadeventtookplace atPineBrushStation,wherehewas born66yearsago.Onlyadaybefore hisdeathhemotoredwithhissonand hisnephewtoDungongtoattendthe usualweeklystocksales.Onhisreturnhomeintheeveninghewasseiedwithaviolentfitofcoughing.He passedawayonthefollowingday.havingreceivedtherossohitionsofreliaSoe.FatherMeagherandtheSisters ofSt.Josephwerewithhiminhislast moments.Deathwascluetoheart trouble.Thedeceasedwasthesonof thelateMr.andMrs.JamesCarlton, whocamefromFermanagh,Ireland, over80yearsago,andshortlyafter securedPineBrush.Deceasedwas oneofafamilyof11-tensonsand onedaughter.Hediedashehad lived,adevoutCatholic,whohada greatdesotionforSt.Joseph.Deceasedleavesawidow,twosons,ant, threedaughters.ThesonsareJames andThomas,ex-studentsofSt.Patrick'sCollege,Goulburn:thedaughters areMary,anex-studentofSt.Scholastica'sCollege,GlebePoint,andHelena andAngela,students,respectively,of SacredHeartConvent,RoseBay,and theDominicanConvent,Maitland.Fostunately,thedaughterswerehomefor vacationwhentheirfathertookill.-R.I.P.

Thefollowingisextractedfromthe "CatholicPress":"Thisisaserious matter,ethefactsofwhichIintendto investigate"-MrBruntnell,Minister forEducation.TheVeryRev.Dr O'Reilly,whohasjustreturnedfrom theIrishConventionatParis,stated onSundaylastthat,"althoughnots disloyalist,hewasgladtohavecome backaperfectlyimpenitentrebel.' ThisisanextractfromTuesday's "DailyTelegraph,"whichprintsexSalvationArmyCaptainBruntnell's threatinblackletters.OnWednesdaythe"Telegraph"sorrowfullyadds: "TheGoverninenthasascertainedthat ithasnopowertointerferewithnon-publicschoolsinregardtotheenforcementofloyalceremonies.Fur-ther,theGovernmenthasnopowerto takeactionwithreferencetoDr O'Reilly(RectoroftheCatholicCollegeattheUniversity),whoisreportedassayingthatheisa'rebel.'but nota'disloyalist.'Theendowmentof £500forSt.John'sCollegeisprovided forundertheUniversityAct,andcan onlybeinterferedwithbyParliament.' SirMarkSheldon.whowasrecently KnightedbytheKing,occupiesahigh placeinthebusinesscommunityof Sydney.BorninEngland,heenter edtheofficeofMessrs.DaltonBros. generalmerchantsandshippingagents, ofSydney,in1890,becamemanagerin 1896,andmanagingdirectorofthe companyin1902.Heischairmanof theAustralianBankofCommerce,of theDistributors'Co-operativeCo.,of N.S.W.,andofCarmichaelandCo. Ltd.SirMarkwasappointedAustralianTradeCommissionertotheUnited Statesin1919.Hehasbeenpresident cftheSydneyChamberofCommerce chairmanoftheN.S.W.Repatriation board,andmemberoftheCouncilof theCommonwealthBureauofCommerceandIndustry.LadySheldon isadaughterofthelateHon.T.J. Dalton,K.C.S.G.

FatherE.Sheehan,P.P.,Boorowa whoenteredLewishamPrivateHospitalforspecialmedicaltreatment,is progressingfavourably,andexpectsto beoutofhospitalshortlyHewil' thentakeaholidaytorecuperate Strenuouslabourinhisparishduring 14years,withoutarest,broughtabout abreakdowninhealth.Hisparishioners,recognisinghisgoodwork,have presentedhimwithasubstantialtestimonial.

MonsignorRella,conductorofthe SistineChoir,belongstooneofRomeF bestknownpatricianfamilies.Heis 51yearsofage.Hisbrothershave largeestatesinSouthernItaly. BythedeathofCouncillorWilliam Brady,J.P.,theIrishandCatholic communityofGisbornehavelosta goodfriend.Thedeceasedwasinhis 33rd.year,andwasanativeofGis. borne.Hisfatherandmotherwere associatedwiththetownsince1839 TheBradyfamilyconsistedofseven sonsandthreedaughters,allweredevoutCatholics,andimbibedtheardent loveoftheirparentsforIreland.Mr Bradywasvice-presidentofthelocal branchoftheCatholicFederation,and theGisbornedelegatetotheIrishConventionheldintheAuditorium,Melbourne,sometimeago,whenhisGrace Dr.Mannixpresided,andthelateMr T.J.Ryan,M.H.R.,tookaprominent partintheproceedings.Councillor BradyandthelateDr.N.M.O'Donnellwereschoolmates.-R.I.P.

MissKathleen(Kitty)Jarvisdied atthehomeofherparents,Adelaide onthe11th.silt.,fromheartfailure Shehadbeenillformonths,buther deathwasunexpected,andisasad losstoherparentsandrelatives.She wasapupiloftheSistersofMercy andwasadevoutmemberoftheCon fraternityoftheHelyFamily.During herillnessshewasattendedregularly byFathersGetzmeyerandO'Connell, andwasconstantlyvisitedbytheSistersofMercy.Herdeathwasapeace fillandhappyone.-R.I.P.
