BeforeMr.JusticeMcCawley,C.J., intheArbitrationCourtrecently (saysthe"CatholicAdvocate"),the Saddlers'andLeatherWorkers'Union soughta44-hours'weekandaweek's 'holidayonfullpayinlieuofthe a,. Saints'days.ThePresidentsaidhe didnotthinktherewereanyworkers outhehourlyratewhowouldnotbe agreeable,tohavingtheSaints'clays cutout.Mr.Kinser,whorepresent. edtheunion,saidtheunionwouldbe agreeabletotwoholidaysonfullpay inlieuoftheSaints'days.ThePresidentadvisedtheuniontogotothe Federal'Court,andMr.Kluver,inreply,statedthatitwouldbetwoyears beforetheycouldgetthereonaccount ofcongestionofbusiness.ThePresident:"Idonotsupposemanyof themwanttogobeforetheFederal Court,nowthatwagesarecoming Own."Mr.Kluver,onrecovering fromthisthrust,describedtheSaints' -daysasanuisance-someofthem are-andsapientlyobserveditwould hebetteriftheywerecutout.Mr. Benjamin,onbehalfoftheemployers,saidthematterhadnotbeendiscussed,andhewouldnotliketocommithimself.ThePresident:"Ifthe Saints'dayswerecutouttheemployeeswouldhavetogetsomething asanequivalenttothoseholidays." ,Mr.Benjaminsaidtherewasnojustificationfortheunion'sclaim-there wasnounemploymentinthetrade. OfNudgeeCollege,Queensland,took placeattheMaterMisercordiaePrivateHospitalonMondayevening, May22,at.theageof64years.He wasattendedinhislastillnessbythe Rev.FatherWalsh,C.SS.R.Thelate BrbtherPhelanwasborninWaterford,Ireland,andreceivedhisearly educationasaChristianBrotherat theNovitiateoftheOrderinDublin. Bro.Phelantaughtinvariousschools inIreland,andsilent14yearsonGibraltar,whereheacquiredathorough knowledge'oftheSpanishlanguage. HecametoAustraliaforhealthreasons,andtaughtinBrisbane,Rockhampton,andChartersTowers.He spentthelastyearsofhiscareerat NudgeeCollege,wherehewasgreatly lovedbyhisfetlock-Brothers,andespeciallybythepupils.Hewasofa very-kindandgentledisposition,affableandunassuming.liethought firstofthewelfareofothers,never consideringhis'owncomfortorconvenienceThesickandafflictedhad hisspecialsympathy.ASolmenRequiemMassforthereposeofhissoul wascelebratedattheNudgeeCollege Chapelby.theRev.M.O'Flynn.R.I.P.

Mr.J.V.Macdonald,Editorofthe "DailyStandard,"hasbeenappointed tofillthevacancyintheSenatecausedbythedeathcit.SenatorAdamson. concertattheHippodromewasmarkedbygreatenthusiasm.Thehuge audiencefurewelledthesingerswith "AuldLangSyne"andgiftsofall kinds;streamersofItaliancolours werethrownfromallpartsofthe housetothedelightedchoristers,so thatacrossthegreatauditorium therewasaninterlacingofred,white andgreenribbons.OntheSunday morningfollowingtheirfinalconcert inSydney,thechoirsangatRoseBay Convent,andintheeveningSt.Mary's Cathedralwascrowdedout,forthe SistinesingerssangtheBenediction andpartoftheVespers.

TheCatholicHallatHaywascornpletelydestroyedbyfirerecently.It wasanimposingandsubstantialwoodenbuilding.Thehallhadnotbeen usedfornearlyaweek,andtheorigin ofthefireisamystery.itwaswell furnished,aridwasvaluedat£2,500. Aquantityofvaluablebooksand othereffectswhichwerestoredinthe buildingeeredestroyed.

SpeakingattheSt.Joseph'sSchool ConcertintheRiverinaHallrecently, theBishopofWagga(Dr.Dwyer)re ferredtoremarkspassedatarecent meetingoftheWaggaMunicipalCouncil,inconnectionwiththevisitto WaggaofArchbishopMannix.Dr. Dwyersaid:"Inotice'thatithaslasea saidweshouldhaveaskedpermission toholdtheprocessionwhenwewnt tomeetArchbishopMannix.Inthe CounciltheMayorofWaggasaidhi didnotthinkitwasaprocession,becausewedidnotcarryflagsorbanners.Well.Idon'tknowaboutthat, butifwecannotmeetourfriends whenwewantto.thislandisnotso freeasitissupposedtobe.'

AvisitwhichgavetheRectorofSt. John'smuchpleasureduringhisstay inPariswasthattoAustratia'sfirst ApostolicDelegate,ArchbishopCerretti.Dr.O'Reillyhadveryhappy memoriesofhistwovisitstoArchbishopCerretti,andrecalledhowenthusiasticallyourfirstDelegatespoke ofhisstayintheConunonwealtL.He stillretainshisaffectionfortnis SouthernLand,andinquiredvery kindlyofhismanyfriendshere.His Excellencyhasneverforgotten,Australia,andsaidheneverwill.Infact, hementionedthathewouldliketo returnhere,wherehehadsomany friends,whohadtreatedhimsohospitably.

SpeakingofDr.Sheehan,Sydney's newCoadjutorArchbishop,Dr.O'Reilly,RectorofSt.John'sCollege,says: "Hehasanexcellentmanner.His Graceisabovemiddleheight,though ratherpaleandintellectuallooking HiselevationtothedistinguishedposiuonofCo-adjutorArchbishopofSydneywillmeanagreatlosstoIreland." Dr.O'ReillydeclaresthatAustralia willbeveryproudofSydney'snew Coadjutor.

FatherHenryE.Cock,S.J.,ofLayendarBay,addressedaverylarge audienceintheDomainon"The TruthAboutTheosophy"anditsmodernformonSunday,the28th.ult.

Gundagai'sgrandoldwomanitMrs. JohnJenkins,whowas100yearsold onMay17last.SheisofAustralian birth,andwasburnatBonnington, nearCampbelltown,N.S.W.Mrs.Jenkinsstillretainsallherfaculties,and isverywell,andisabletowalkabout onthearmofoneofherdaughters. Sheisasanxiousasevertoread thenewspapers,andmakeherselfacquaintedwiththedoingsofthedistrict.

TheVeryRev.Dr.O'Reilly,C.M. whoarrivedinSydneyfromtheIrish RaceCongressatParis,onthe27th ult.,bytheMalwa,wasentertainedat aprivategatheringoffriendsandstudentsatSt.John'sCollege.Theproceddingswereofamostcordialand enthusiasticnature.

FatherC.J.Cullen,BA.,ofBullina hasproducedanoperaentitled"ASeasideHoliday,orSailorsandPrincesses."Theproductionisspokenofas verycreditabletothecomposer,and thosepupilsandex-pupilsofSt.Patrick'sConvent,Muhvrillumbah,Who tookpartinit.Theoperawasproducedunderthepersonaldirectionof thecomposer, VICTORIA. HomefilescontainappreciativenoticesofthesingingofMr.Alfred O'Shea.theAustraliantenor,statesa cablemessagefromLondon.Mr, O'Sheawasnotwellknownasasinger inAustralia.Mr.NevinTait,ofJ, andN.Tait,tookakeeninterestin him,andarrangedtotourtheprovincesofEngland,alsototakepartin aseriesofconcertsinGlasgow.At theseappearancesheshowedsuch greatpromisethat,atMr.Tait'ssuggestion,hewenttoMilan,inItaly,to study.ArecentletterfromMr.Nev. inTaittoMr.FrankTait,ofMelbourne,said:"IthinkthatO'Sheahas agreatfuture.Ihadanotherletter fromhisteacher,whopredictsforhim agreatcareer."Mr.NevinTaitaddedthatMr.O'Sheasangyerymuch likeMr.JohnMcCormack.HereturnedtoLondonfromMilanrecently, andappearedattheQueen'sHall.A privatecablemessagerecentlysaid: "O'Shea'ssuccessundoubted."

InanaddressataCommunion breakfastheldintheEmeraldHall. SouthMelbourne,recently,hisGrace Dr.MannixspokeontheIrishquestion.liesaidthepresentposition inIrelandcalledfordiscreetsilence. IlewasgladtofindthatDr.O'Reilly, onhisreturnfromIreland,when speakinginMelbourneafewdaysago, usedtheverysamewordsthathe(the speaker)hadusedmorethanoncenamely,thatitwasnotforusinAustraliatoattempttodictateortosuggesttothepeopleofIrelandwhat coursetotakeinbringingabouta satisfactorysettlementoftheirown affairs.ThepeopleofIrelandalone hadtherighttodecidethematterfor themselves,sincetheyhadpaida greatprice,anditwasforthemto reapthereward.Untilthepeopleof Irelandhadmadetheirunitedwill known,thelesssaidbyusinAustraliathebetter.Heregrettedthat bloodshedhadoccurredinIreland,especiallyinthenortheastofIreland HisprayerandhopewasthatthefutureofIrelandwouldbesettledona lasting'peace,acceptabletothe wholeofthepeopleofIreland.It hadbeenadeplorablethingthatMr. MichaelCollinsandMr.DeValera hadnotbeeninthesamecamp.He -regrettedthatfact.Theywerenow inthesamecamp,andhewasgladof it.

TheRev.G.S.Brodie,speakingat therecentPresbyterianAssemblyheld inMelbourneregardingtheproposed agelimit(50years)forclergymenof thatdenomination,saidthatthough theoldmenwerewiltingontheoutsideoftheirheads,theywereasgood aseverinside,andifaclergymanhad nottobotheraboutanti-liquormeetingsorberequiredtoattendProtestantFederationandothersimilar gatherings,theymightbeabletolead apeacefulandGodlylife.

Anetprofitofover£1,300was showninconnectionwiththelastcelebrationofSt.Patrick'sDayinMelbourne.

TheRev.J.FitzpatrickhasreturnedtoSaleafterfourmonths'absence. Hehas,apparently,completelyrecoveredfromhisseriousandprolonged illness.FatherFitzpatrickhasbeen appointedtothe'chargeoftheCowarr parishduringtheabsenceofFather McMahon,whohasleftonatwelve months'holiday.

Mr.LawrenceMeany,oneofthe lastsurvivorsoftheearlypioneersof theTittybongandTalbotdistricts, diedonMay9.Deceasedwasbornin Pollas,CountyLimerick,Ireland, about76yearsago,andcametoAustraliawhenayouthof18years.He leavesawidowandfamilyofthree sonsandfourdaughters.SisterM. Gerard,oftheOrderofMercyisa daughter.-R.I.P.

Inhisculturedaddresson"The ChurchandArt,"deliveredintheCathedralHall,undertheauspicesofthe CatholicFederation,theVeryRev.
