Inthematterofthedeportationof FatherCharlesJerger,C.P.,Australian Catholicsaremakinganotherstandfor theprinciplesofjusticethatarethe boastoftheBritishEmpire.Thes:rcumstancesofFatherCharles'arrest andinternmenthavealreadybeengiveninTILERECORD,andtheyindeed arenotinquestionnow.Theyhappenedinwartime,andweareeven willingtoforgetthem.ButtheCommonwealthGovernmentie,endeavouringtomakeuseofthetechnicalfact thattheWarPrecautionsActisstillin operation.andcommitafurtheronslaughtonthelibertyoftheindividual, moremonstrousthananyperpetrated duringthecurrencyofthewar.Ithas announceditsintentionofdeporting fromAustraliacertainex-nnernees,but itproposestolaynodefinitecharge againstthem.
Averyproperprotest,therefore.is beingmade,especiallyinviewofthe factthatoneofthementobedeportedsosummarilyisaCatholicpriest. whohasbeeninAustraliasinceboyhood.TheCatholicFederationsecuredfromtheSolicitor-GeneralapostponementofFatherJerger'sadeportation,andhehaspromisedalsoaninquiryintothecase.That,however,is notdeemedsufficientbyMany,and Mr.JohnWrenandMr.J.S.Sheerly havetakentheinitiativeinamovementto,agitateforapublictrialbeforeajudge-fornothinglesi,and nothingmore,thanatrialaccordingto Britishjustice.FatherJerger,though protestinghisinnocenceofanything thatwouldrenderhimliabletocondignpunishment,statesthatheis willingtoabidebythedecisionofa judgegiveninopencourt. LastweekMr.JohnWrensentthe followingmessagebywirelesstoArchbishopMannix:"Manythankscheeringmessage.Wearetryingtokeep flagflyinghighuntilyoucomeback. ResistancewithallourstrengthattempteddeportationFatherJerger. AustraliareiteratesGod-speed,safe, speedyreturn." Tothisareplycame,showingDr. Mannix'sownviewofthecase:"ApproveyouractionStandbyFatherJerger

wasthewatchwordofameetingcalled intheCathedralHalllastSundayafternoon.Thehallwasfull,andseveral thousandsinthestreetoutsidehadto beaddressedasanoverflowmeeting. Mr.JohnWren,asChairman,madean excellentspeech;though,touseaquotationfromoneofCicero'sspeeches thatishereveryapt."Hewhowould notbe_eloquentinthismatter,must lackthepowerofspeechaltogether." Thisisacasewherethemildestlanguagemakesupabitingattackonour unfairadministration. TheVeryRev.FatherJohnBarry, AdministratoroftheArchdiocese,also madeatellingspeech.Heprotested againstthedeportationofanyone:"We haveourlaws,ourjudges,andourprisons,"hesaid."whyshouldwesend menoutofthecountry? -Anilwhy. furthermore,shouldanyonebedenied atrial?" Themeetinglastedthewholeafternoon,anditwasevidentthateverybodywasverymuchinearnest.Itis ahopefulsignthattheseamenhave promisednottomananyshipthat
wouldbetakingmenfromAustralia withoutatrial.Ontheplatformwere severalsoldiers,includingSergeant MauriceBuckley,V.C.,D.C.M.Finally, afundwasopenedtodefrayanyexpensesincurredinarrangingatrial. Morewillbeheardofthiscaselater. PitythePrince!
AfterafortnightinMelbourne,the PrinceofWalesisquiteexhausted. andheisthisweektakingacomplete rest.Hehasbeenpushedaboutby theReceptionCommitteealloverVictoria,andnotevenhispersonal-popularityhassavedhimfromgrowing wearyandsickofitall. Hisstay,ofcourse.hasbeenanimmenseboontothenewspapers,and theyhavegivenpagesandpagesto' accountsofisdoings.Thisweekthe Argusthouatitmustkeepthepot boiling,soyesterdayitprintedananonymousletter,allegingthatCatholicbodieshadstoodalooffromwelcomingthePrince.Ithappensnotto-be true,forwheneverinvitationsreached Catholicbodies,theywereaccepted.
Amoresuitablereply,however,was giventhismorningbyDr.Phelan, BishopofSale.asfollows:"Iwellremember19yearsago.when wewerecelebratingtheopeningofthe CommonwealthParliamentbythethen DukeandDuchessofYork.Iwasdean ofSt.Patrick'sCathedralatthetime. OnthatoccasionalmostallthehierarchyoftheCatholicChurchinAustraliacametoMelbourne.Anaddress onbehalfoftheCatholtcsoftheCommonwealthwasdraftedbythehierarchy,andItookittoGovernment House.Nootheraddress,asfarasI amaware,waspresentedtotheDuke ofYorkfromtheCatholicsofAustralia, asthatpresentedinMelbournewas consideredtheofficialone.Sincethen adevelopmentintheformofgoverns anentofourChurchhastakenplace,an ApostolicDelegatehavingbeenappointedtoAustralia.TheDelegate representsthePope,andhespeaksfor theentireCatholics-bishops,priests, andlaity.WhenIwasaskedthree weeksagobytheAdministratorofthe Archdiocese,theVeryRev.FatherJ. Barry,aboutthepresentationofan addresstoH.R.H.thePrinceofWales, Iadvisedthatthedutydevolvedon theApostolicDelegate.Iunderstand thatArchbishopCattantsoishastening fromthenorth-westof'Australiato meetthePrince.eitherinBrisbaneor Sydney,andthatheistospeakinthe nameoftheCatholiccommunityofthe Commonwealth.Inthiswayweareto beofficiallyrepresented:Theopening upofdiplomaticrelationsbetweenthe BritishEmpireandtheVaticanwithin thepastfiveyearshasestablisheda cordialtuu.:srstandingbetweenthetemporalandspiritualrulers.andtherepresentativeofthePopeinAustraliais thefittingpersontoexpresstheloyalty oftheCatholicsoftheCommonwealth totherepresentativeoftheBritish Empireamongstusatpresent.The writeroftheletterintheArguswishes theexpressionsofloyaltytocomefrom manysocietiesconnectedwiththeCatholicChurch.Ifsuchacoursewere pursueditwouldmeanthepresentation ofadozen,orprobablyascore,ofaddressesfromtheCatholicFederation, NewmanSociety,men'sclubs,St.Vin-

ApressmessagetotheCatholic StandardandTimes,Philadelphia, datedRome,March24,says:ThefollowingisthetextofthetelegramsexchangedbetweentheHoly FatherandthenewPresidentofthe FrenchRepublic.HisHolinessfirst telegraphed:"WeexpresstoYourExcellencyOurcongratulationsandgoodwishesonthe occasionofyourelevationtothepositionofchiefmagistrateoftheRepublicandyourinstallationintheElysee. WehavenodoubtthatDivineProvidencehasinstoreforyouractionas President,withthedevotedandsincerehelpofallgoodcitizensofFrance, themagnificentandgloriousmissionof raisingFrancefromitsmaterialand moralruins,andgivingtoyourcourttrythereligiouspeacewhichwillbe animportantfactorinitsrestoration, andalsogivingeffectivehelpinbringingpeaceamongthenationstowhich allmankindislookingforward.With thishopeandtrust.Weimplorethe Divineblessingonyou.MlePresident, onyourfamily,ontheFrenchGovernment,andonallFrancewhichWelove alwaysastheeldestDaughterofthe Church." FrenchPresident'sReply. ThePresidentreplied:"Atthe'momentofundertakingthechargeentrustedtomebytheNationalAssent. bly,YourHolinesshasdonemethe honourofexpressingtomeyourfeelings,andyourgoodwishes,too,forthegreatnessandprosperityofFrance
ItgivesmethegreatestpossiblepleasuretotellYourHolinesshowIappreciateyourcongratulations;andI haveequalpleasureinassuringyouof thehighvalue,whichIplaceonyour goodwishesforthehappinessofvictoriousFranceandforthefulfilment ofitshistoricdestiniesindissolublyalliedtothecauseofjustice."
Thecordialityoftheexpressionof goodwillissignificant,butthefactis moreimportantthapthetext.The HolyFathertooktheinitiativeoftelegraphingtothenewly-electedheadof theFrenchRepublic,notonlypersonal congratulations,butgoodwishesfor thenation,andimploringDivineblessingsontheFrenchGovernment. ItisnotthefirsttimethattheRepublicasRepublichasreceivedkind messagesfromRome;and,indeed,it iswellknownthatthecounselofRome aswellasthattheFrenchBishopsto Catholicsatthelastelection,wasto joinwithallgoodmeninvotingfor theexistingconstitutionalconditionswhichistheexistingFrenchRepublic -againstanyforcestendingtodisrupt themOfcoursenothingelsecould beexpected.butthesethingsare landmarksontheroadofreconciliation betweentheHolySeeandFrance, whichisnowstrongerthantheforces whichdroveitintotheseparationof 190.5andthepersecutionofreligionof thatandpreviousyears.The"EldestdaughteroftheChurch,"too,isa commonplaceinRome'sreferenceto France;butthereitisagainexpressed inorderthatitmaynotbeforgotten.

AnearliermessagefromParistothe StandardandTimesstated: ThereisonlyonegreattopicofconversationamongFrenchCatholics,and alsotheFreemasonsofthatcountry justnow.Thatistheresumptionof diplomaticrelationswiththeVatican. MonsignorMillerand,whointroduced abillintheChamber,asksforacreditof238,812.50francstore-establish theFrenchEmbassyattheVatican. ThePresidentoftheCouncil,M. PaulDeschanel,whosupportedthe measure,saidinhisspeechthatthe Republic oflaicizationtowhichthe Republicwascommittedwerenotin dispute,butthesedidnottiethehands oftheRepublicfromactionwhichwas forhercommongoodintheworld.
"Thetimehascome,"hesaid,"when Franceshouldberepresentedat'Rome, sincealltheotherpowersaretobe foundthere,andmoreoverherinterestsintheEastandtheinterestsof hermissionarieswhoserightswerein dangerofbeingsacrificedtotherights ofthoseofothernationalitiesdemandthisrepresentation."

TheTreatyofPeace.hedeclared. wasanopportuneopeningfortherenewaloftheserelations,becausein therearrangementsoffrontiers,particularlywheretherewasamixtureof raceandreligion,questionswerecontinuallvarisinginwhichtheRoman Curialadinfluence,andtheinterventionofarepresentativeofFrancewas naturalandusefulforthedemandsof ourAllies. InFranceherself,hecontinued, questionslikethoseofAlsace-Lorraine. withitsoldconcordat,thesettlement ofthefuturemissionariesfortheGermanColoniesofTogoandtheCameroons.theexercisebyhernationalsof theirreligioninMorocco,andthesafeguardingofinterestsasinTunis,all wereproblemsthatneededtheaidof theHolySee. Thecommentsofthepressontheintroductionofthebillareforthemost partfriendly,althoughjournalslike LaLanternearefumingoverit.
Thestudentofwordswillbeinterestedinthedifferenceofexpression,in thetwotelegramsofwhatisreallythe same'thingseenfromtwoplaces-from twodifferentpointsofview.HisHolinesssays"religiouspeaceisanimportantfactorinthepeaceamongnations" -andthatiswhathehashadinhis mindeversinceAugust,1914,andwhat PiusX.hadinhismindbeforethat. ItistheconsiderationwhichunderliesallBenedictXV.'smessages. ThePresidentrepliesinfullagreementbutindifferentwords:"Justice andthefulfilmentofthedestiniesof victoriousFrancebasedonjustice." Thevisionoftheruinedprovinces,of RheimsCathedral,theremembranceof fouryears'agony,thestillanxious lookacrosstheRhine-allthesemust bepartoftheviewofanyFrenchman, mostofallofthePresident.onwhom theresponsibilityrestsmostheavily. Butthen,agreementisthere,andthe messages,intheviewofthosehere bestcompetenttojudge,bringits translationintofactofficiallynearer. Actually,indeed,itissaidtobea factalready,andtheofficialtransla. tiontobenotonlyimminentbutabout tobecompletedonascalefullycom inenSuratewiththeimportanceofthe event.whichmeans,inplainterms, thatweshallseeverysoonindeedthe exchangeofofficialrepresentativesbetweenthetwopowers,andtheserepresentativeswillbethebiggestthat canbefound. MonsignorCerretti'sProminence. CertainlythesecretaryoftheCongregationofExtraordinaryEcclesiasticalAffairs-andthatMonsignorCerretti-ismarkedoutbypositionand competencefortherestoration'ofthe nunciatureatParis,ifandwhenthat comesaboutonthescalesuggested above.If,again,hecanbespared here.Hispreviousexperience,his capacityandhisworksincehereturnedfromAustraliatoRome,haveput himintosuchapositionthathisdeparturewouldmakeaholeinCuria impossible-itwouldseematfirstsight -tofill.But,ofcourse,nothingis impossibleinRome.

ItisnowfourmonthssinceIcameto BridgetownfromWagerup.sothatI couldgototheconventschool.My motheriscomingdownheretolive nextweek,thenmyothersisterswill alsobeabletowritetoyou.Greenbushesschoolboyscameto-dayand hadagameoffootballwiththe Bridgetownboys,whilesomeofthe girlspreparedafternoonteaforthem.
