TheEnglishmanwandersfrom statuetostatue(inWashington)and readsthenamesofmanywhofought fortheAmericansi.sthewaragainst England.Buthewillneverfind Englandnamedasthecountrywhich acknowledgeddefeat.Thatisafine instanceofrestraint- ShecommemoratesbothsidesintheCivilWar, whichwasthefirstproofthatmaterialismisneverthesupremeconsidera-tiontoapeopledestinedtosuchinfluenceasAmericamustultimately yield,-WalfordD.Green,intheNineteenthCenturyReview.

TheoldpurelyAmericanmemory oftheWarofIndependencehasalmostceasedtoactasanirritant againstGreatBritain.Americanchildrenarenolongertaughttoregard theEnglandoftheeighteenthcenturyasatyrantPower. ButIrish memoriesremain,andIrishinfluence intheStatesisverystrong.Onthat thereisverylittletobesaidexcept thatGreatBritainmustactjustly andleavetheverdicttotheworld.-Idem.

Britishstatesmanshipisbankrupt.'Malignantstupidityisitsonlyasset-Againstanationfacingitwithindignantcontemptitishelplessand hopeless. ThescenesinthevicinityofMoun. joyPrisonthroughoutyesterdaywere ofamostremarkablecharacter.One lessontheytaughtmostforcibly-the readinessofthemassoftheIrishpeopletoconformtomeasuresofdiscipline whentheyproceedfromquarterswhich theyrespect.Themilitaryandpolicehavingbeen completelywithdrawn,thekeepingof thevastcrowdsdevolveduponanumberofCatholicpriestsandbodiesof Volunteers,and,withwonderfulsuccessdidtheyeffectthatend. Anumberofciviliansalsopassedalong,theavenueaskingthepeoplenot tocheeras Shortlytheprisonerspassed. before7o'clockthefirstprisoner,Mr.PatrickShiels,ofDerry,was released,beingtakeninoneofthe ambulancestotheMaterHospital. Shortlybeforethisanexcitingscene occurredintheNorthCircularroad neartheprisonowingtotheactionof thedriverofamilitarymotorvehicle indrivingatafuriouspacethrough

thecrowds.Agirlwasknockeddown, andthedrivernarrowlyescapedviolenttreatmentatthehandsoftheindignantonlookers. WaitinginaDownpour. FromthedepartureoftheGovernor totheVice-regalLodgeuntiltheLord Mayorcamebacktotheprisonat8.30 p.m.',afterhissecondinterviewwith theLordLieutenantanhourelapsed. Duringthattimeheavyrainfell,but owingtotheeagernesstohearofthe latestdevelopmentstherewasno diminutionintheproportionsofthe waitingcrowd.Largenumbersof peopleremainedintheneighbouringthoroughfaresduringtheremovalof theprisoners.Thisoperation,which commencedabout9o'clock,wasa slowone, severalthoughthreeambulancesand privatemotorearswereused inthework.

TheLordMayoronhisarrivalhada consultationwithMr.ArthurGriffith, M.P.,Mr.SeanO'Mahony,M.P.,and Mr.DarrellFiggis. Immediatelyafterwardstiheywere admittedtotheprison,where-theymet FatherAugustine,OS.F.C.Itwas soonlearnedthatthereleaseofthe prisoners,whichwastobeuncondi. tional,wastoproceedimmediately.Theintelligencewaspassedout throughoneofthewindowsinaslip ofpaper,andwasconfirmedbyoneof thecrowdannouncingthatFather Augustinehadinformedliimthrough theslideofthemaindoor,"thatMr. Griffithhadagreedtoeverything." Theannouncementwasgreetedwitha vigorousoutburstofcheering.This wasrenewedwhenDr.Ryan,onemerg- ingfromthebuildingdeclaredthathe wastakingthefirst25"prisoners"toJervis-street,Hospital. "UNCONDITIONALStraltlIND*11,."

Mr.Griffithsubsequentlyinformeda Freeman'sJournalreporterthatthe releaseoftheprisonerswasunconditional.Asmanyaspossiblewouldbe transferredfromtheprisonthatnight, andtheremainderwouldbereleased to-day.Heunderstoodthattheorder appliedtoallprisonerswhowereon hungerstrike.

Theworkofremoving'Oleprisoners wasTheshortlyafterwardsundertaken. LordMayorremainedinthepri- sonwhileitwasbeingcarriedout.

ThetwoambulancesoftheDublin Corporation,theRathininesFireBrigadeambulance,twomotorcarspro-videdbySurgeonMacArdle,amotor carfromSt.Vincent'sHospital,andmotorcarsgivenbyDr.Cunningham. Dr:Ryan,Dr.McGuinnessandothers weresengagedintheremovalofthe prisoners,66ofwhomaccordingtoa

!IlanFeinFlagsandBanners. InnumerableSinnFeinflagswere carriedbywomen,whoalmostequalledthemeninnumbers,andbanners werealsobornealoftinscribed: WormwoodScrubbsgaolover 100Irishmenaredyingonhungerstrikebecausetheyareuncharged anduntried.Aretheytodie?They willdiesoonerthansubmittoaty rannywhichisworsethanRussia undertheCzar." Aftermakingacircuitoftheprison. thedemonstratorsmassedattherear, wheretheysang"GodSaveIreland. andothersongs,totheaccompaniment ofthebands,andcheeredcontinuouslyforoverhalfanhour. Inadramaticintervalcheerscould beheardinresponseproceedingfrom withintheprison,andtheexcitement amongstthedemonstratorsgrewintense.Silencewasrequestedtoenablefurthercommunicationtobe madewiththeprisoners,andthefollowingmessageofencouragementwas shoutedtothemacrosstheprison walls: "TheLondonIrisharebehindyuu inyourstrike.Cheerifyouhear." Adistinctresponsivecheerfrom withinindicatedthatthemessagehad reacheditsmark. The-RosarymIrish. ThenFatherRoche,ofDockhead, steppedforwardandrecitedtheRosaryinIrish,theaudiencespontaneous. lyuncoveringtheirheadsandkneeling."Onaccountofthewetgrasswe willsaytheRosarystanding,"saidFatherRoche,andhisadvicewascompliedwith. Atabout7.30about200peoplewith SinnFeincoloursarrangedthemselvesinqueuesatrightanglestothe centralprisonblockandsangIrishairs totheaccompanimentofamelodeon. Thefirstsignthattheyhadbeenheard withintheprisonwallswasthesmashingofthegleesinacellwindowonthe sideandthethrustingforthofaSinn Feinflag.Rousingcheersfromthedemonstratorsappearedtostimulate thoseinsidetofurtheraction,and withinashorttimeanumberSifaces couldlae-seenpeeringthroughthelarge hallwindowinoneofthebuildings. Flagsandhandkerchiefswerewaved bythedemonstrators,andtheprisoners,withtheaidofheavywoodenimplements,completelysmashedtheupperportionofthelargewindow,includingfouroftheuprightironbars. Throughtheaperturesthuscreatedanddescribedafterwardsbyoneof theprisonersas"ourloopholes"-fromtwelvetoeighteenofthehungerstrikerswavedSinnFeinflagsand cheeredlustily.
