Mayor'sWelcome TheMayorsaidthatinproposing thetoastofthehealthofHisExcellencytheApostolicDelegate,hedid sowiththegreatestpossiblepleasure. Itwasanhonourtohaveintheir nsidstadistinguishedvisitorlikeHis Excellency.Thiswasthefirsttime adirectrepresentativeoftheSupreme Pontiffhadhonouredthedistrictby hispresence.He(theMayor)was pleasedtohavetheopportunityof welcominghimonbehalf-ofthepeople ofthegoldfields.HisExcellencywas welcomednotonlybytheCatholic community,butbyallsectionsofthe public,andhewouldnotfindamore warm-heartedpeopleanywhereelse. Thegoldfieldsenjoyedauniquedistinctioninmanyrespects.Twenty-seven ortwenty-eightyearsagotheyattractedthevirilemanhoodofAustraliaand otherpartsoftheworld.Theseadventurousspiritshadlearnedtolive togetherinpeaceandharmony.The harmonycreatedsomanyyearsago wasstillexistentandinevidencetoday.Thepeoplerecognisedthatevery manhadarighttoenjoyhisownconvictions.Theyrememberedthefine Scripturalinjunction,"Peaceonearth andgoodwilltoallmen."Peoplehere endeavouredtoliveuptothespiritof thatinjunction.Evidenceoftheexistenceofthatspiritwasgivenby theattendancethatdayofclergyof otherdenominations.Hewouldlike tomakereferencetotheSupremePontiff,whohadbeenpleasedtosendHis ExcellencytothispartoftheDominions.Theyknewthesympathyhis Holinesshadforthem,andtheywould askhisExcellencytoconveytheir expressionofloyaltytowardsbins. Theworkofthechurchonthegoldfieldshadbeencarriedoutinanadinirablemanner.Peopleofalldenominationshadexhibitedbroadtoleranceandrespectforoneanother.
