AtSt.Mary'sCathedral,Sydney,the Rev.FatherP.J.Sheehy,ofSt.Patrick'sCollege,Manly,preachedaninstructivesermonon"TheRuleofthe ChristianFaith."Therewasnothing sadderinhistory,hesaid,thanthe presentignobledivisionsamongstthose whocalledthemselvesbytheSaviour's blessedname.Suchdivisionswere againsttheidealsofChrist,whose followerswere,onHisownprophecy, tobe'onefold,'theywereagainstthe distinctteachingoftheApostles.Testedlogicallyandpractically,thisProtestantruleoffaithhopelesslybreaks down,andisshowntobemerelys man-maderule,notcompetentto maketrueChristians.FatherSheehy wentontopointoutmanyparticulars inwhichitfailed.

Itwasnotcompetent,forinstance, totelluswhatare,andwhatarenot, theinspiredbooksoftheSacredScriptures.Inspiration-atleast,the minimumdefinitionofinspiration necessarytomaketheBiblearecord ofGod'srevelationtomanunderGod's ownauthorship-wasanexternalfact oftremendousimport.Itneededattestation,proof.Clearly,nobook maytestifytoitsowninspiration. Someexternalproofisnecessary.And noneisforthcomingexceptthetestimonyoftheCatholicChurch.

TheBiblealonecouldnothave beentheruleoffaithforthefirstgenerationofChristians-themostferventofall.Thefactwasthatthe NewTestamentwasnotcompleted tillthecloseofthefirstcentury,nor didanyApostlewriteanythingtilla generationaftertheAscension.For thesefirstChristians,theruleoffaith wastheoralteachingoftheApostolic College.Willsomeonekindlytellus when,where,andbywhom,thisprimi_ tiveruleoffaithwaschangedforsubsequentages?

Itwasbythevoiceoflivingauthor- ity-PapalorConciliar-thatimportantcontroversiestouchingtheveryessenceofChristianfaithweredecided inthepast.Everyheretic,everyrebel, includingSatan,appealedtotheScriptures.The"Biblealone,"then,solves nodoubts,endsnocontroversies.Its applicationhaslandedProtestantism inaquagmireofchaosandconfusion. Underthetyrannyofthisabsurdrule offaith,itsdupeshavebeenledon tothedarkprecipiceatwhosebase foamtheicywatersofunbelief.In sucharulethereisnosalvation.Hence thecryofamodernUniversityprofessor-"backtoHolyChurch."

TheeveningofWednesday,December17,wasthesceneofalargegatheringinSt.Joseph'sMusicHall,when themembersoftheChildrenofMary madetheirfarewellpresentationto theirDirectress,Rev.MotherVeronica,whoisshortlytotransferthe sceneofherlaboursfromNorthamto Albany.Thehallhadbeenprettily arrangedasadrawingroom,andpresentedquiteagayandpleasingappearance,withitsmassesofblueand whiteflowers.OnbehalfoftheSodalityFatherO'DonnellmadeRev. Mothertherecipientofahandsome andusefulpresent,which,onaccount ofitsdailyutilitywouldkeepgreen thememoryofthoseshehadendeared herselftoduringhersojourninNortham.Duringthecourseofahappy littlespeech,FatherO'Donnellpaid aglowingtributetothegreatworkof Rev.Mother,notonlyintheSodality,butineverywayconnectedwith theparish.Herinfluencewasquiet, butsuchthatitwasexertedovereven theleastenergetic.RegardinghisconnectionwiththeSociality,hewascontenttoleaveallmattersinthehands ofitshigh-souledDirectress,whowas socapableinherownespecialwayof inculatinginthemindsofthegirls underhercarethosevirtuesparticularlyessentialtotheaverageAustralian.FatherO'Donnellhimself,like RobertWalpoleofold,whenthe wfieelsofaffairsarerunningsmoothly, followsthelineofleastresistance.

In.aninterviewwithArthurGriffith soonaftermyarrivalinDublin,which Itrustreachedyousafely,Irecountedsomeoftheescapadesof"J.J."in evadingthepolice.Youremember howhejumpedintohisownbarber's chairandwasfuriously'latheredinto disguisebyhisassistant,whilethe policewereinhisveryshop!Since thenIhavegatheredascoreof storiesof"J.J."but,alas!Ihaven't apossiblehopeofputtingonpaper one-hundredthpartofthethingsthat Iamburningtoconveytoyou. Oneofthestories,however,must notbeallowedtododgethelight. "J.J."wasupstairswhensuddenlythe wordcamethatthepolicewereonhis track.Throughtheskylight,outon theroof,andthroughhisneighbour's skylight,wentthefugitive.Ashe reachedthestreetdoorhesawhis bicycleagainstthekerb,andagreat ideaseizedhim.Jumpingonithe madestraightforaphotographer. "Lookhere,"hesaid,"here'safortune foryou.Thepoliceareinmyplace lookingforme.Bringyourcamera downandplantitontheotherside ofthestreet.I'llstandinthedoorwayofmyshop,andwe'llattractthe attentionofthepolice,sothatthey willlookoutofthewindowabove, andbeincludedinthephoto.It's thechanceofyourlife."But,sadto relate,thephotographerwasn'tgame. "J.J."wasoneofthe'26prisoners whosodramaticallyescapedfrom MountjoyPrisonsomesixmonths ago.Eversincethenhehasbeen "ontherun,"butfarfromlyingconcealedinthebowelsoftheearth,he hasbeenwalkingaboutthestreetsof Dublin,travellingtoandfrobetween IrelandandEngland,and,asIsup- poseyouhavealreadyheard,heeven hadtheaudacitytopayavisitto PierceBeazleyandW.Searsin ManchesterJaillastmonth!Ofthe 26whoescapedonthatoccasion,only twohavesofarbeenretaken.But howonearththeyworkedtheirway outofsuchasupposedly-unbreakable jailasMountjoyhadalwayspuzzledme."J.J."smiledintohispipeas Iputittohim.

"Doyouknow,"hesaid,"thefunniestpartofthewholeshowwasaremarkmadebytheGovernortoone oftheboystwohoursbeforewegot out.TheGovernorwasfed-upwith us,andheexclaimed: "'I'llbegladtoseethelastofyou all!"Ah,well.'wasthereply,'Idon't thinkyou'llhavetowaitlong.'And surehehadn't.Theboysroaredover itwhenthewordpassedaround,and thewarderswerepuzzledoutoftheir wits."

"Notsofast,"Iinterposed."Wasn't thereanyalarmgiven?"

"Sure,"saidJ.J."Thesixwarders couldnotbeovercomesosuddenlyas topreventthemgivinganalarmof somekind.Butwehadcountedon that,andplannedaccordingly.We knewwecouldclearthewallbefore thesoldierscouldgetintotheexerciseyard.Thismeanttheywould havetocomerightaroundthewall ofthejailontheoutside,andthat meantafewminutes.Besidessoldiersaresoldiers--"

"But,"Iinterrupted,"theydon't havesoldiersinthejails."

"Don'tthey J.J.smiled."Well,theymusthavebeenpayingusacompliment,fortheyhadthematMounjoyonthisoccasion.Infactwe oweourescapewithoutanyuntoward accidenttothesoldiers.Thesesoldiersarealwaysonguardatthefront gate,andwefiguredoutthatafter theygotthealarmtheywouldhaveto tellthesergeant,andthesergeant wouldhavetotelltheofficer,andthe officerwouldhavetosay'Rightturn' and'Leftturn'and'Shoulderarms,' andsoon,beforetheycouldgetgoing. Wedidn'twantanhour'sstart,.A fewminuteswasallwewanted,and weknewthemilitarywouldgiveitto us.Andsotheydid."

"\Vhathappenedtothesixmenwho pouncedonthewarders?"

"Theypaidthepenalty,ofcourse. Oncewewerecleartheytriedto makeadash,butitwasnogood.One ofthemgothalf-wayupthewall,but wasseizedbytheleg."

"Whathaveyoubeendoingallthe timesince,Mr.Walsh?"Iasked.

"Iwentintoretirementforawhile," hesaid,"butitdidn'tsuitme.Ihave beenacrosstoEngland,anddownto myconstituency,andaroundDublin generally.Ihavehadsomefunnyexperiencesinthecity.Acoupleof weeksagoIwasbikingalongastreet andsuddenlycameacrossthreepolice- men,withriflesintheirhands,standinginadoorway.Igotoffandlookedatthem.'What'sdoing?'Iasked. 'Beoffwithyou,'theysaid.'Beoff beforeyougetintotrouble.' OnSaturday,the20th.ult.,theAppealinaidoftheFoundlingHome cametoa-close,botheventfuland pleasing.Theundertakingwassuccessfulineveryconceivablerespect, andtheflatteringunctioncanjustifiably belaidtothesoulsofallthoseconcernedthattheeffortwascertainly worthwhile,particularlyinviewofthe wonderfulresponse,altogetherirrespectiveofthespiritwhichprompted theladiesandgentlemeninterestedin embarkingontheprojectatall.In anumberofworks,inwhichmany wouldsomuchliketoengage,thereis thenotionobsessingthemind,"Willit everbeasuccess?"aquestion,bythe way,whichdulypresenteditselfbefore theFoundlingHomePublicAppeal waslaunched.Intheinstanceunder review,however,theresultsmorethan warrantedtheexpenditureofbotn physicalandmentalendurance,so muchsoastofullyjustifyarepetition ofthelabourinanotherequallyand ennoblingdirection,butwithjustthis isroviso,ofcoursethatalittlemore helpinghand,ofacharacterbothconstantandlasting,beextendedtothose engagedintheorganisationandwork connectedwithanysimilarschemelikelyinthefuturetobeentertainedand carriedtocompletion.Theendeavour washugeandveryarduousandirksomeattimesandwhenitisrememberedthattheundertakingwas arranged,frequentlynecessitatingthe workingoflonghours,moreoftenthan oncelateintothenight,andinoneor twoinstancesintotheweehoursof themorning,thereisthesatisfaction ofknowingatleastthattheeffortwas farfrombeinginvain,butareward obtainedforthelabourtuidertaken in the,interestsoftheeightylittlefoundlingsnowaccommodatedintheHome. Everythingwasdonewithsuchagood grace,andonlythoseinimmediate touchwiththeofficewhenthesituationwasatitshighest,andinfull swing,havetheremotestconception oftheamountofworkwhichtheAp-pealdailyandhourlyinvolved.Unlikeotherassociationsofworkersin thecauseofcharity,noneofthosewho soenthusiasticallyembracedtheop- portunitytomakethepresentgreat effortthesuccessitwasgenerallydesired,receivedanymaterialaidfor whattheyhaddone,anditisthisone gloriousoutstandingfeaturewhich shouldcommenditselfinaverymarkeddegreetonotonlytheCatholic. butthewholeofthenon-Catholiccommunity,andplaceonrecordthatthe achievementofsuchagrandobjectwasonlymadepossiblebythespirit eoCnichprimarilyactuatedtheidea andpracticablesubsequentlybythe applicationofenergy,exertion,and zeal.

ThereisastrikingparallelinthecoercivemethodsofLordFrenchand BuckshotForster.BothintheIrishhistoryrepresenttheforlornhope ofastrongImperialpoliticalpartyefforttotamptheNationalspiritofthe IrishpeoplebyforcinguponthemtheacceptanceofasystemofGovernmentnotinkeepingwiththeirnaturalchoice.ForsterandSpencerin turnweretheAdministratorsofapolicyofcoercionthemostvicious sincethePenalDays.Twenty-fiveyearsoftheWhipofCoercion,howeverfailedtobreakortamethespiritoftheIrishNation-theybothgave upthedirtybusinessofendeavouringtoflogapeopleintosubnrftssionand admitteddefeat.LordFrenchhasn'tspared"hisnativeland."Hehasn't beenthegoodSamaritanandpouredtheointmentofconciliationintohis country'swounds.Heusedhispowerwithallseverity-hehasbeenthe faithfulservantofaGovernmentthathasnotbeenover-scrupulousorfair initstreatmentoftheIrishpeople.

ThatsomeattemptwouldbemadebytheCoalitionGovernmenttodeal insomewaywiththeburningquestionofIrishGovernmentwasevident sincetheill-consideredLondon"Times"schemeofHomeRulewasplaced beforetheEnglishpublicfordigestion.Publicopinioninallpartsof theBritishErdipirehasbeenrousedintoactivityinconnectionwiththis mostimportantandvitalquestion,anditssettlementhasbecomeamatter ofgravepoliticalconcerntoBritishstatesman.Nomatterhowsedulously theanti-IrishpropagandistsmayendeavourtomaskpublicopinionwithinandwithouttheEmpire,IrelandandtheIrishareastumblingblockto Britishinterests,anduntiltheIrishquestionisdisposedofinamanner satisfactorytothemajorityofthepeopleofIreland,itmustbeanobstacleinthewayoftheImpe'rialPeace,whichisasinequanontoImperialexpansion.EnglandcannotaffordtoholdIrelandhandcuffedas 'acriminalandcontinuetotreatherasaconqueredenemy.Thehistoryof BritishGovernmentinIrelandsincetheUnionhasbeentheexpressionof force,andtheworstfeaturesofunfriendlyadministration.Shehasbeen bledwhittandimpoverishedtoplacatethevestedinterestsofBritishtrade andBritishmonopolists.TheexigenciesoftheEmpireareurgentlyclamantforasettlementofmanypressingproblemsinordertoestablish peacewithinitsfrontiers,butnomoreurgentproblemappealstotheBritishworldto-dayforsolutionthalithatdifficultyfromwhichtheBonar Law-LloydGeorgeGovernmentseeksbyitsHomeRuleBilltofindaway out.WedonotseeabiggleamofhopefortheadoptionbytheIrish peopleofMr.George'sschemeofIrishself-Government.Wereadilygrant thataccordingtohisGovernment'sstandardsofJusticeitisalargemeasureofIrishReform.ButLloydGeorge'sGovernment,andevenLloyd Georgehimself,neverheldmorethanminimisedprinciplesofJustice whereIrelandwasconcerned.ThetroublewitheveryBritishstatesman whofailedinthegovernmentofIrelandhasbeenthatheattemptedto governtheIrishpeoplenotaccordingtonative-hornideasbutinaccordancewiththeCockneyideaofwhatisHirish,andthatseemstoustobe thetroublewrittenthroughthepresentHomeRuleschemewhichthe CoalitionGovernmentproposestoimposeupontheIrishpeople.Itis opposedtotheIrishman'sidealofself-GovernmentforhisCountry-it seekstodividethepeopleintotwopoliticalcampsandtoestablishanalien parliamentinIreland-tocreatetwonationswherethereisonlyone Nation.

ThedualparliamentasproposedintheBill,nowunderconsiderationin theImperialParliament,isitsveryworstfeature-itisaconcessionto theCarsoniteswhoarebutafractionofthepeople,andwhoarenotentitledtobeconsideredasaseparatenationalgroupinIrelandforwhom anIrishParliamentcouldnotequitablylegislate.Theveryideaseemsto ustoimpeachthehonourandintegrityofIrishmenandtoquestiontheir senseofJustice.Itisahadwaytosetaboutconciliationbychallenging youropponent'shonour.Itisbeggarlystatescrafttoplantinasectionof theIrishNationtheseedsofanimosity,hatred,jealousy,anddistrust wheneveryeffortshouldbemadetocoverthewholebroadfieldofIrelandwiththegoldengrainofacommonfriendship.Northandsouth areIrish.Whycannottheyworktogetherasbrothers-whatisthereal difficultyintheway?DeValerasaysthereisnopoliticaldifficultythat theIrishpepolecannotsettleifthemeddlinghandsofBritishstatesmen willkeepstillinthematter.Andagain,hesaysthereisnoUlster Question.Thereis,itistrue,thatoldsectioninthenorthwhichhas claimedascendancyfromtheoldbaddaysofthePlantations,andwhich haseverbeenamenacetoPeaceandJusticeinIreland,butitisavanishingfactorinIrishinternecinepolitics,andonlyexistsbyprivilegeand patronage.

TheBritishPrimeMinisterisawareofhisgreatdifficultyinattemptingtoshapeasystemofGovernmentthatwillbeacceptabletotheIrish people.AtpresentthereisanativeParliamentinIrelandwhichhas beenestablishedbytheconsentoftheIrishpeopleandwiththeirapproval.HowtodisplacethatParliamentagainstthewishesofthemajorityofthepeopleisthereallygreatdifficultyconfrontingtheLloyd GeorgeGovernmentshouldhisBillbepassedintostatutorylaw.SeeminglytheIrishnationisprosperingunderDailEireann,andthepeopleare contentwithitsadministration.Itisallegedbytheanti-Irishpress thatrecentoutragesinIrelandarechargeabletothenativeadministra-

UndertheproposedHomeRuleBillitwouldappearitisnotintended togivetheIrishpeopletherighttoFreedomofTradeoutsideIreland,and theImperialParliamentreservestoitselfthepowertocontrolmerchant shipping.Irelandwantsherrightofwaitothemarketsoftheworldjust asAustraliadoes,oranyotherself-governingcountrydoes,andtheIrish peoplemustinsistuponthatrightifindustrialisminIrelandisnottobe strangled.ThereareotherobjectionablefeaturesintheBillwhichwill makeitimpossibleofacceptancebytheIrishpeople.Itisnot,asit mightappearfromacasualsurvey,agenerousmeasureofreform.Itis aniggardly,half-heartedmeasure,andifitisthebestthattheBritish GovernmentcanoffertothepeopleofIreland,wefearthedayisremote when,onthepartofEnglandtherewillbeajustandequitablesettlement oftheIrishQuestion.TheIrish"Times,"astaidandproperconservative Unionistorgan,franklycondemnsitas"hatefulaliketoUnionistsand Nationalists,"anddeclaredthatthree-quartersoftheIrishpeoplewill rejectit.FromthisandotheropinionsnotlesspronouncedwemayassumethattheBillisnotlikelytowinfavourinIreland.Itissignificant thattheIrishNationalistmembersabsentedthemselvesfromtheHouse ofCommonsduringitsdiscussion,indicatingthattheyhavenofaithinit, andthatnoamountoftinkeringwithitcouldmakeitasatisfactorymeasure.ItisboundtoberepudiatedbytheIrishpeople,andthewholeof thenationalpresswillsurelycondemnitaslackinginthatwisdomand justicenecessarytoasatisfactoryadjustmentoftheburningquestionof IrishSelf-government.

solo"QuiTollis"wasrenderedbyMr. Sturmer.Seldomhaveweheardsuch Latinpronounciationcombinedwith vocalabilityandknowledgeofthe renditionofchurchmusicasispossessedbythepopularconductor. MissesHorrigan,whohadjustrecoveredfromasevereillness,sang "EtIncarnatus"and"AdesteFideles" asonlyatalentedsingercouldrender them.The"Benedictus,"oneofthe mostbeautifulgemsofchurchmusic everwritten,wasablyrenderedby MissBaldwin(soprano),MissMcCarthey(contralto),Mr.Sturmer(tenor),andMr.Croft(bass).Theblendingofvoicesandinstrumentswas justperfect.Therenderingof"AgnusDei,"byMrs.McAdam,was splendid.Possessingabeautifuland mellowcontraltovoice,thisartist usesitwiththeeaseofthetrained singer.Thesoloworkinthe"Kyrie"and"DonaNobisPacem"was effectivelysungbyMiss`Jones. Agreatmeedofpraiseisdue toMissKathleenTownsend,that talentedmusician,whoseartistic handlingoftheorganwasagreat contributingfactorinthesuccessattained.

TheladiesconsistedoftheMisses Horrigan,Baldwin,Jones,Hamilton, Kennedy,Williams(2),McGuicken (2),Davidson,Begley,andCarter,sopranos,and Groucher,andMrs.McAdam(contraltos),Mr.Haynes(tenor),and Messrs.McAdam,Croft(3),Ginivan, Kelly(basses).Thechorusesthroughoutwererenderedexcellently,the "Credo"perhaps'standingoutfrom therestofthework.Thewholeproductionisanexampleofwhatachoir canreallydowheninthehandsofa capable,conductor.

Mr.Sturmerasconductorshould feelproudofthesuccessofthechoir hasattainedunderhisleadership, andwetrustthathewillatEaster againgladdenandupliftourhearts byproducinganothermasterpieceas weheardatthemid-nightMassat theMonastery,andwhichwasrepeatedonChristmasDayatthehalfpasttenHighMass.

8/1/1846:Nowadays,thecasualpersononviewingthepileofbuildingsin VictoriaSquare,knownastheConventofMercy,gatherstheimpressionthattheNunshavebeenthere forcenturiesatleast.Butitisonly amatterof74yearsago.,onJanuary 8th.,sincethefirstSistersofMercy cametoPerth!Dr.Bradyhadbeen consecratedBishopofPerthwhilstin Rome,andoneofhisfirstactionswas tocallontheMotherHouseofthe SistersofMercyinDublinandplead thecauseofWesternAustralia.He didnotpleadinvain,forwhenhe sailedforFremantleagainhewasaccompaniedbytheReverendMother UrsulaFrayneandfiveNuns.

Theiradventuresbeganimmediately. Theonlymeansofboardingtheirship, theElizabeth,wasbymeans.ofaliarrel.inwhichtheywereswungonboard onebyone.ThefirstSistertoface thisordealfaredbadly,forthebottom felloutofthebarrel,andshewasprecipitatedintotheboat!Nothing daunted,however,theyallenteredthe barrel-sosoonasitwasrepaired.and onSeptember16th,1845,sailedfor Australia.BishopBradyhadsecured amixedlotofmissionaries,forbesides theNunsthereweresixItalianand Frenchpriests,anIrishpriest,eight IrishCatechists,andtwoBenedictine novices.Duringthefourmonthsthe voyagelasted,theElizabethhasbeen welldescribedasaBenedictineMonastery,aFrenchNovitiate,aCollege ofEcclesiasticalStudies,and,bythe Nuns:aConventofDivineProvidence. TheCommunityroseat4a.m.daily, and!Masswascelebratedat4.30a.m.

'theirlandingatFremantlewasas primitiveastheirboardingatGravesend.Theyhadtostepoutof boatsintothewaterandwadeashore. Ofcourse"all"Fremantlehadassembledtogreetthenewarrivals,the twoCatholicsinthecrowdgoinginto ecstacyatsightoftheSisters.The sameafternoonthepartysailedupthe rivertoPerth.whereagainthewhole populationawaitedtheirarrival.A processionwasformedtotheChurch, andPerth,probablyforthefirsttime, heardtheTeDeumchantedthrough itsstreets.TheChurchmusthave giventheSistersashock.Itwas simplyarougholdbrickbuilding,innocentofplasterorceiling,andpossessingaroofthatallowedthehot suntoshineliberallyonthecongregationinside.Therewereopenings fordoorsandwindows,andanold shopcounterservedforanaltar.Only acrossgracedthealtar,no*evena candleoraflowerkeepingitcompany.

AfterreturningthankstoGodfor theirsafearrival,theSisterswereconductedtotheirnewhome,alittleold cottageonthesitenowoccupiedby Dr.Merryweather'sresidenceinSt. George'sTerrace,oppositeGovernmentHouse.Onehasto smileatwhatfollowedhere.The womaninchargeturnedouttobea goodWesleyanlady,andintheinnocenceofherhearthadprepareda tastydinneroffriedchopsforthe travellers.ButitwasFriday!Surelyitwasbadenough,afterlivingon salt-junkforfoursolidmonths,toland onaFriday,withouthavingthesmell ofadeliciousplateofchopspushed underone'snose.ButtheNunsgot overit,andinthejoyofdecorating theChurchforthecomingSunday, theyforgottheirfirstordeal.

ThefollowingSundayfoundthe Churchtransformed.TheBishophad broughtwithhimfromEuropealovelyTabernacle,andonanewaltar,resplendentwithcleancalico,gold paper,andfreshflowers,thefirstPontificalHighMasswascelebrated,in thepresenceofacongregationthat numberedmoreProtestantsthanCatholics-almosttheentirepopulation ofPerth,orasmuchofitascould crowdintothebuilding.TheSisters nowshiftedintoalargerhousein Hay-street(thenHowick-street),almostoppositethePalace.TheynamedittheConventoftheHoly Cross,andatonceturnedtheirattentiontowardsanoratory.Onthe sixthdayaftertheirlandingthey hadthegreatjoyofhearingMassin theirownOratory.

Beforeanotherfortnighthadelapsed, Perthwastowitnessanothersight, which,surely,noothercityinAustraliacanboast.Itwasthesightofa younglady,anIrishmaid,dressedin beautifulbridalrobes,marchingin processionthroughthestreetsofPerth fromtheConventtotheCathedral,to receivefromtheBishopherblack robe,andtomakeherprofessionasa SisterofMercy!Thisyounglady, whosenamewasSisterMaryIgnatius(Dolyhide),had accompaniedtheSistersasanovice, andonthisSunday,January25,1846, shetookherfinalvows.Naturally, theuniqueeventcausedgreatexcite mentamongstthewholecommunity. Fordaysbefore,thechildrenmade preparation,andthecountrywas strippedbareofflowerstoaddtothe joyoftheoccasion.Accompaniedby theotherSisters,andwiththechildren formingaguardofhonour,theprocessiontraversedthestreetstwice; goingtotheCathedralandreturning totheConvent.

ThenextdaytheNunsopenedtheir school.Forthefirstthreeweeksthey

AlthoughBishopBradyaccepted thesehardshipscheerfully,itwasnot altogetherfromchoicethatheendured them.Hehadconfidentlyreliedon theGovernmentofthedaygivinghim agranttowardstheexpensesofthe passagesofhismissionaries,seeing thatsimilarconsiderationhadbeenextendedtoProtestantministers.But hishopeswereill-founded,andthis heavyinitialexpenditureformedthe nucleusofthecrushingdebtwhichwas tocausetheunfortunatedifferencesin lateryears.Notwithstandingallhis troubles.BishopBradyprovedanadmirablemissioner,forinfouryearshe hadsecured300Europeanconvertsin WesternAustralia!

Until1843theCatholicsoftheWest hadnotseenapriest.Theprevious I 475ere.7.111Sikr47 46, or

Thedebtswereincreasing,andin desperationBishopBradydespatched oneoftheSpanishBenedictines,Dom Serra,toEuropetosolicithelp.In Rome,DomSerrawascreatedBishop ofPortVictoria,anewSee,andDr. Brady,fearingthatthemoneyshe hadcollectedwouldbelosttoPerth, nowdespatchedDomSalvadotostate hiscase.Atthesametimeheap pliedforaCoadjutor,theworriesof, thediocesehavingwornhimout.The authoritiesatRomesoughttosettle thematterbytranslatingDr.Serrato PerthasCoadjutor,andappointinghimBishopofDaulia.DomSalvado wasappointedBishopofPortVictoria inDr.Serra'splace.

Butthesearrangementsdidnot solvetheproblem.Instead,theyac-centuatedthetroublealreadyexisting, andnecessitatedanothervisittoRome onthepartofBishopBrady.OrderedbythePopetoreturntohisdiocese, Dr.Bradyreturned(1851),butthedifficultiesincreased,andaccordinglyhe withdrewforgoodin1852.Hedid not,however,resigntheBishopricof Perth,andDr.SerracontinuedtoadministerthedioceseasCoadjutor. OneofhisworksremainsintheBishop'sPalaceatPerth.In1859Dr. SerravisitedSpain,appointingFatherGrivertoadministeraffairsduringhis absence.HeresignedhisCoadjutorshipin1862,whereuponFatherGriver wasinvestedwithspecialpowersfrom Rometocarryontheadministration.

FIRSTCONVENTINPERTH.CONVENTOFMERCY,

ItshouldbementionedthattheChapeloriginallybuiltwiththisConventstillhastoaccommodatethecommunityofSisters.Increasednumbers whichaspanof70yearsnecessarilyyieldshavenaturallyoutgrownthesize oftheoratory.Indeed,tosuchanextentisthisthecasethatfurnishings. exceptbareessentials,thathaveindayspastbeenanornament,have reluctantlyhadtoberemoved.Itisonlyatmuchinconveniencethat theSisterscancongregateintheirChapel-theirprincipalandcherishedrefuge-makingituncomfortablycrowded.UnfortunatelyfortheSisters themselves,theoratoryistheonlyportionoftheentireVictoriaSquare ConventandSchoolbuildingsthathasnotbeenenlargedtomeettheneeds ofthetimes.

hadonlyfivepupils,thatbeingthe numberofCatholicchildrenofschool ageinthewholetown!Butsuddenly therecamearush.Protestantparents,seeingthechanceofhavingtheir childrentaughtbyladieswhowerenot onlyeducated,butdoingthework outoflove,graspedthatchance.The Sisterswereputtosorestraits.They hadtogiveupalltheirrooms,save one,toaccommodatethechildren, whiletrunksandboxeshadtobe usedfordesks,withseatsmadeoutof plankssetonbricks!Buttheirselfsacrificewaswellrewardedbythe sightof56peopleapproachingthe CommunionrailsonHolyThursday, andbytheremarkableattendancesat theoratoryduringthemonthofMay, HowprimitivethingswereintheCon. ventinthosedaysisseenfromthe factthattheSisterswereforcedto usetheirtea-cupsasvasesforthe flowersonthealtarduringthis monthofMay.When,later,the Conventagainshiftedtomoresuitable quarters,theirgratitudeknewno boundsatfindingthattherewasa pumpquitehandytothedoor!

ButifthegoodNunssufferedhardships,theycouldseeforthemselves thattheirBishophadhisshareaswell. Theyatleasthadahousetolivein. Dr.Bradyhadnohouse,buthegot overthedifficultybyenclosingthe fourpoleswhichsupportedthechurca bell,andusingthat!Itwashardly 'anidealresidence.Measuringonly4 feetoneachside,hecouldnotlie down,butwasforcedtosleepina chair!Again,ithadnoroof,but, nothingdaunted,theBishopprocured anumbrellawithwhichhekeptout theJanuarysunbyday,andstray

yeartheypetitionedtheVicarGeneral ofSydneytosendthemapriest,and onNovember4,1843,FatherBrady, withFatherJoostens(whohadservedasachaplaininNapoleon'sArmy), andaCatechist,PatrickO'Reilly, landedatAlbany.OnDecember13 theyreachedPerth.andatoncebegan theerectionoftheChurchofSt.John theEvangelist.Soanxiouswerethey tohurryonthecompletionofthis church,andsoanxiousweretheCatholicsoftheplacetohearMass-some ofthematMan'sestatehadnevervet assistedatthecelebrationofMassithatthefourwallswererunuplike lightning.Holeswerethenmade hereandthereforwindowsanddoors, buttheeffectofthiswastothreaten thestabilityoftheedifice.Accordinglythewallswereproppedup,andso thefirstCatholicChurchinWestern Australiareareditshead.

Money,ofcourse,wasnecessary. andtherewasnoneinPerthorthe State.Helpers,too,wereneeded,so FatherBrattysetofffortheOld Country.WhileinRomeitwasin timatedtohimthatPerthwasabout toberaisedtoaBishopric,andFather BradyrecommendedthatDr.Ullathorne,formerVicarGeneralinNew SouthWales,butnowreturnedto England,shouldbeappointed.But Dr.Ullathornedeclined,andtheHoly SeethereuponappointedFatherBrady asourfirstBishop.HisconsecrationtookplaceinRomeonMay18, 1845.Itwasfollowingonthisthat BishopBradysecuredtheservicesof thenunsandothermissionaries,who accompaniedhimonhisreturnto WesternAustralia.January8,1846.

FatherGriverwas,ofcourse,aSpaniard.Althoughdesirousof studyingforthepriesthoodinhisearly youth,hewaspreventedfromdoing soowingtotheclosureofthereligiousestablishmentsinSpainjustat thattime.Hethereforeturnedhis attentiontomedicine,butnosooner hadhegraduatedasaDoctorthanthe politicalwheelinSpaingaveanother turn,andtheoldMonarchywasm stored.Thetheologicalschoolswere againopened,andwithoutdelayDr.MartinGriverbeganhispriestlystu. dies.HehadbeenacompanionofDr. Serra'sinSpain,andso,afterhisordination,hiseyesnaturallyturnedtoWesternAustralia.DuringBishop Serra'speriodofofficeinPerthheact- edashisVicarGeneral.

Although,aswehaveseen,Father GriverwasvirtuallyBishopofPerth from1859,itwasnotuntiltenyears later(10/10/1869)thathewasraised totheEpiscopacyasBishopofTloa,andAdministrator-ApostolicofPerth. Dr.BradywasstilllivinginIreland, andthusnoBishopofPerthcouldbe appointed,buthisdeathin1872at lastclearedawayalldifficulties.On August5,1873,Dr.GriverwastranslatedtotheBishopricofPerth.It waswhileFatherGriverwasAdministratorthattheCathedraloftheIm- maculate consecratedConceptionwassolemnly (29/1/1865).Dr.Griver diedin1886.andwassucceededbyDr. Gibney,hisVicarGeneral. *

TheFederalelectionshaveresulted inabigvictoryfortheFarmers'Union, aminorvictoryfortheLabourParty, s andaratherseriousdefeatforthe fusionNationalists.InmyownopiniontheLabourPartydidquiteaswell ascouldbeexpected,sincetheyhad littlemoneytospendupontheelec tion,andtheirorganisationwasundoubtedlyfaulty.Inasub-division whereIwasengaged,therewasonly onemotorcarsupportingLabour, whiletheNationalistsmusthavehad doens.TheLabourcampaignseemedtolack"snap,"andthis,together withthefactthatpracticallyallnewspaperswereagainstthem,causedthe result.

Yet,inthecomingParliament,we maybeabletoseetheparty-system workinghealthily.TheFarmers'Union meantoinsistonstandingbythemselves,anddonotintend,tobeused aspropsfortheNationalistGovernment.NolongerwillMr.Hughesand 'hisMinistersbeabletoescapeansweringquestionsbyscornfullyreferringto "disloyalty"onthepartofthequestioner.Thismethodofconducting thebusinessoftheHouseisadirect violationoftheprinciplesofparty Government,sowemayhopefora betterstateofaffairswhenother methodsare-astheymustbe-adopted. Wemaywellhopetoothatfromnow onsectarianismwillbedroppedasan electioneeringdodge.ItisquitecertainthatCatholicshaveneverraised thepointinitsobjectionableaspect, anditisquitecertainthatithasbeen raisedbyothers.Inincisivelymoderatewords,ArchbishopMannixhas beencondemningitsintroductioninto politics.HesaidatGordon(6/12/'19): "SomepeopletalkedaboutthiselectionasifthePopeweregoingto overrunAustralia.(Laughter.)He venturedtosaythatthePopedidnot knowanelectionwasgoingon. (Laughter.)ThePopehadnothing whatevertodowiththematter; iv. neitherhadtheCatholicChurch. TherefU,peopleshouldputthePope ononeside,andtheCatholicChurchas well,andDr.Mannix,andthinkof AustraliaantiAustralianinterests. (Cheers.)" Andinunequivocalexpressionshe gavehisopinionoftheliteraturecirculatedonbehalfoftheNationalists.At a St.Kilda(5/12/'19)hesaid:"ThesocalledNationalistshavefallenback upontheirlasttrench.Theyaretryingthe'Critchley'Parkertacticsonce morewhichontwooccasionsproved theirruin.TheParkerliterature,of whichIhavealargesupply,isnotintendedsomuchforCatholics,norfor thethousandsoffair-mindednonCatholics,butitisintendedforamiserablesectionwhosemindsareready tobepoisonedbythisfilthystuff.No clean-mindedmanorwomancould readitwithoutblushing."

Andsoweleavepoliticsforthepresent,hopingandprayingthatinthe futureitwillbesomethingthatw' canspeakofwithpride,andnot somethingwemusttoleratewithdisgust.

ChargesAgainstStVincent'sHospital.

Butarisingoutofthepoliticalcampaigncomeaseriesofchargesagainst St.Vincent'sHospital,madebyDr.W. S.KentHughes,recentlyelectedacity councillor.Theyweredeliveredata "finalpre-electionrally"conductedby ,'theVictorianProtestantFederation, andtheAgereportgivesthemasfol. lir Iciws'Dr.KentHughesreferredtothe workandpolicyofSt.Vincent'sHospital,which,hesaid,wasnotacharitableinstitution.buta'proselytising shop.'PoorRomanCatholicswere notadmittedthere,anditwasconsidered100timesbettertogetaProtestanttochangehisreligionthanto cure100RomanCatholicsoftheirsickness." Dr.KentHughes'sstatementmadeat theProtestantFederationmeetingon Thursdayevening,11th.inst.The statementthatSt.Vincent'sHospital isnotacharitableinstitution,buta "proselytisingshop"isabsolutely false.Thesickpoorofallcreedsand classesareadmitted,manyofthem beinginalmostdestitutecircumstances,andquiteunabletopayanything towardstheirmaintenance.Tosay thatthehospitalisa"proselytising shop"isunworthyofDr.KentHughes. Itisunworthyofagentleman,who wasamemberofthestaffsomeyears ago,andwho,attheannualmeeting heldintheTownHall,Melbourne,on 25th.March,1898,whenacknowledgingavoteofthanks,onbehalfofthe surgicalstaff,said,interalia:"HehadalargeexperienceofSt. Vincent's,andhehadnevermeta patientwhohadbeentroubledabout hisorherreligionwhilstinthehospital.Theloveoftwooftherabid classofbigotedProtestants-whomhe hadtorefusetotreatunlesstheywent intoSt.Vincent's-fortheinstitution knewnoboundswhentheyleftitcorn_ pletelycured.Theyfoundthatinsteadofbeing,astheyimaginedthey would,strangledintosubmissiontothe Pope,theyhadbeentreatedmore kindlyandlookedafterbetterthan evertheyhadbeenintheirlivesbefore."

TheMotherRectressthenputsbrieflySt.Vincent'sclaimforaGovernmentgrant:-Letallfair-mindedmen decidewhetherSt.Vincent'sHospital shouldorshouldnotreceiveaGovernmentgrant,whenthefollowing figuresaretakenintoconsideration: Duringthepast25years37,006inpatientsand337,217out-patientsreceivedtreatment,andabouthalfthis numberwerenon-Catholics. UniversityDegreesinDivinityProposed.

Ourgallantbandof"Defendersof theProtestantFaith,tincturedwith Rationalism,"heldadeputationtothe Minister'forEducationlastweek,and askedhimtomakeprovisioninthe newUniversityBillforaUniversity CollegeofDivinity,withpowerto awarddegrees.OnespeakeringenuouslystatedthatthelateArchbishop Carrwhenalive,hadexpressedhis agreementintheprovisionofsucha collegeforthosethatdesiredit.Of coursehedidnotexplaintowhatextentDr.Carrhadagreedtosucha

collegebeinggivenStatebenediction. Butanyway,Dr.Mannixmadehis positionclearontheveryevertingof thedaythedeputationwasheld.

Hedeclaredthat,inadditiontothe educationalgrievancesatpresentsufferedbyCatholics,somepeoplewere anxioustoimposeanewgrievanceat theUniversity,bythecreationofa schoolofDivinitywithpowertoaward degrees."Iprotestinadvance,"said Dr.Mannix,"againstthisattemptto setupintheUniversity-hithertofree asbetweenalldenominations-anin- stitutionofwhichCatholicscouldnotavailthemselves.Iftheywantsuch acollege,letthempayforitthem- selves,andnotaddanotherburdento theCatholicbody,whichisalreadybearingsuchaheavyburdeninthe matterofprimaryeducation."

ARationalist"Christening."

Itisafact,patenttoallobservers, thatoutsidetheCatholicChurch,men .dothemostremarkablethingsinthe nameofsomeparticularreligioussect. Butthepalmforupreasonableness mustsurelybegiventotheso-called "Rationalists,"ifwemayjudgefrom areportinarecentnumberofthe Socialist.Thisdescribesa"Christening"ceremonyconductedattheEm- pireTheatre,Melbourne,inthefollow- ingterms:

Catholicpeople,buttheyaresurprised whenaffrontsoometothemfrommilitarypeople.Catholicswhotookan interestinthevoluntarychurchpar adeheldonSunday,23rd.November, tocommemoratethehandingoverof the1901quotaofthecadetstothe citizenforcescouldnothelpnoticing anunpleasantincidentenactedbythe MilitaryBand.Thisbandleftthe barrackswithAnglican,Wesleyan, orMethodist,andCatholicsoldiersbehindthem.TheAnglicansbrokeoff atSt.David's,andthebandthen PlayedtheWesleyansandCatholicsup Elizabeth-streettoMelville-street, wherethe,WesleyanChurchis.Upon arrivingattheWesleyanChurch,the bandstoodasideandplayedtheWesleyansintochurch,andallowedthe Catholicsto"marchon"toSt.Mary's Cathedral,afewblocksaway,withoutbeingtreatedsimilarlytothe others.Thebanddispersedoutside theWesleyanChurch.Whatmust havebeenthefeelingoftheCatholic ladsisknowntothemselvesandother Catholicswhowitnessedtheunpleasantincident.Itshouldnotbeallowedtogounnoticedorcondoned,or setdownasaprecedentfordealingout similaraffrontsinthefuturetoCatholics.Theaffrontwasmadeallthe moreacutesincetheparadewasavoluntaryone,notacompulsoryone.
