Religiousnesspervadesthedailylife ofthesepupils.Theyattenddaily Mass,andmanyofthemreceivedailyCommunion.Theylisteneverymorningtoashortmeditationwhichis preachedtothembyaFatherwhois theirspiritualdirector.Askabout singing,andfindmeaplaceinthis SouthernHemispherewithanequalrepertoriumofmotetsandMasses,and abettertraininginGregorianchant! ThefanaticismofwomenoftheJay andBarlowclass,apartfromtheir othernotoriouscharacteristicsof whichthelargebodyofthepublicis aware,joinedtotheinexperienceofa

Thewriterofthearticlehasagood graspnotonlyoftheIrishsituation, buthehasgothisownideasofthe solutionofit,and,needlesstosay, thatsolutionisacceptabletoallofus. OneoftheSocialistpapersgivesa headlinethus:"LloydGeorgeObjects toArmaments-"then,afterwhatis intendedtobeapause,theheadline adds:"OfOtherNations,"therebyintimatingthathehadnointentionof limitingEnglisharmaments.
ThefiercestattackthatIhaveyet seenisinrelationtothehypocrisy anddeceptionofEnglandinreferencetoitsattitudetoRussia.SufficeitistosaythatifaSinnFein paperpublishedthisarticletheeditor wouldbeinjailandthepressseized bythevigilantpoliceauthorities.

didnottakemuchnoticeinthebeginning,butaftermatureconsiderationthegistofthetreatydawnedon thepeople,andtheninterestwas aroused.Itshouldbealessonto AmericatobeevercarefulnottointerferewiththeaffairsofEuropeand tokeepavigilanteyeonJapan.
ThefactisthatthepresentgenerationofAmericandiplomatsareno matchfortheEuropeandiplomats whoarebroughtuptothewaysand bywaysofnationsfromtheircradle, andwithwhomitisasciencetostudy humannatureinallitsmoodsand tenses.

TheEnglishcolonyinRomeisnot atpresentveryactive,becauseit wouldbeutterlyuselesstotryswimmingagainsttheswiftstream,nevertheless,thereisnohopethatthey arerepentantonthequestionofIreland. Abettertimeisbeingawaited,andprobablylikeLloydGeorge thereisalittletrustingtofortune.
JustafewdaysagoitwascirculatedthattheHolyFathertoldone oftheCardinalsthatthehopeofthe ChurchwasintheAnglo-Saxonpeople. Theonlypeoplewhobelievesuch statmentsarethosewhowanttobelievethem;ofcoursenosensiblepersongivesthemevenamoment'sseriinisconsideration.
TheHolyFatheriswellinformed ,istowhoarethefriendsofthe Church,and,knowingthatheissurroundedbymenlikeMonsignorCerretti,whohasawideknowledgeofthe variouspartsoftheAnglo-Saxon world,weneednotfearastoanyidea thattheHolyFathermayhaveasto thepositionandinfluenceoftheAnglo-Saxonraceinthelifeofthe Church.
Personally,1thinktherewasnever atimewhentheVaticanofficialswere one-tenthsowellinformedasto exactpositionoftheIrishquestion, andImightsaythatwithfewexceptionsthereneverwasatimewhen Irelandhadsomanyfriendsamongst theofficialsoftheVatican.TheinfluenceoftheAnglo-SaxonraceonbehalfoftheChurchisthemerestmodicumoftheInfluenceithastriedto exertforitself;itneverhesitatedto usetheChurchwhenanyopportunity presenteditself.
TheCounciloftheUnitedStatesCatholicHierarchyatWashington-the firstin33years-whichwasconvened byCardinalGibbonsonthesuggestion ofArchbishopCerretti,PapalDelegate, arrangedtodealwith,amongother subjects,socialreconsVuction,theen. forcementofprohibition,nationalisationofeducation,andespeciallythe rightsofmutualrelationsofcapital andlabour.

OnthatlasttripofBishopTorreshe madesomechanges.FatherAltimira succeededFather.Planas,andthelatterreturnedtoNewNorcia,wherehe isto-day.FatherAlcaldealsocame backtoNewNorcia,andheaccompaniedhisLordshipBishopCatalan ontheoccasionofhisvisitlastSpring. ItwasfromhisLordship,whomI
workoftheFathersthatonlyaslate at1913adesperateattackwasmade bythenativesupontheMissionand ravagesmadeupontheplaceaswell asbodilyharmdonethemissionaries. FatherAlcaldewasgrievouslywounded,andhislifewasdespairedoffora time.Aftermanymonthsofsuffering,hefinallyrecoveredatSt.John ofGodHospital,atSubiaco.When hearrivedattheMissionwithhisLordshipinSeptemberlast,thispioneer priestwasjoyouselywelcomed,and mademuchofbytheverynativewho hadspearedhim.Thenativeshad, intheinterim,beenentirelywon round,andtheyarenowmostfriendly withtheFathersandtheirhelpers. Theyaretaughtthegreat truthsofreligion,andofthedoctrines oftheChurch,andtheyareverywillingandreceptivepupils,Thousands ofthemvisittheMissioneveryyear, wheretheyarefeastedandtreated mostkindly.

moneyhastobeexpended,aswellas muchsacrificeandlabouronthepart ofthemissionaries.TheNewNorviaauthoritiesfinanciallyassistthe Itcliree-priestsandthethreelaybrothersto'theextentofabout£400per annum,thepleasureofspiiitualising thenativesbeingtheonlyrecompense. Patience,hardworkandmoneyhave tobeprovidedand,thoughnotone pennyhasbeencontributedbythe State,thecapitaltoprovidethe aboriginalswithfoodand'clothinghas, sofar,beenfoundbytheNewNorciacommunity.BishopCatalanspent twoweeksattheMission,andhe foundthatmuchdifficultyhadbeen experiencedininducingthenativesto wearaparticleofcovering.The womenarebeginningtounderstand thatsomeslightclothingisdesirable. Sofarthefathershavenothadthe experiencethatthelateBishopSalvadousedtotellofwhenrecounting hisearlyNewNorciaexperiences.The nativesoftheVictoriaPlainsrefused toclothethemselves.Themissionary forbadethemtovisitthestation,and refusedthemfoodunlesstheyeach woreakangarooskin.Thefirst partyofnativesthatcapitulatedin thisparticulararrivedwiththeirkangarooskins,buttheyworethem abouttheirshoulders.Throughthe influenceoftheFathersthespearing ofwomenfortheslightestoffenceto theirmen-folkhasbeenabandoned, andtribaldisputesarebroughttothe priestsforjudgment.
Thenecessityforacontinuanceof ,thisgreatworkandforitsexpansion isstronglyurgedbyhisLordship.The landswhicharebeingworkedshow greatproductivity.WhentheMissionwasestablished50,000acreswere proclaimedanativereserve,andthe Benedictinestookupleasestotheextentof100,000acresunderthecondi. tiensgoverninginthenorthernpart oftheState.Therehavebeenclearedabout-120acres,andthecharacter ofthecountryhasdemandedmuch hardlabourandabigoutlay.Some ofthenativesgiveahelpinghand, andthosewhodoreceivespecialconsiderationatthehandsofthe Fathers.Theunusualisolationofthe placeisshownbythefactthatthe FatherswerenotawareoftheterminationofthewaruntilhisLordship apprisedthemofthefactinSeptemberlast.Theyhadanideathatthe greatstrugglehadended,forthe periodicalvisitsofthepolicepatrollers oftheNor'-Westcoasthadceased,but theywerequiteignorantoftheissue. Theyhavenotinrecentyearshad communicationwiththeoutside world,exceptattheannualvisitof the.Bishops.TheirsuppliesaretakenfromNewNorciatothemannually. Thispositionwasbroughtaboutin 1912whentheirschoonerwaswreckedoffJonesIsland.Oftenthemissionarieshavebeendeprivedofthe necessitiesoflifeexceptingthosethey couldsecureinthebush,andmanya timetheyhavebeenhelplesstoassist

Atfirst,ChristmasandEpiphanywere werecelebratedtogether,anditwas notuntiltheformerfestivalwasdefinitelyallottedtoDecember25that thetwowerecelebratedseparately.As earlyastheyear200A.D.,itwasthe establishedcustomoftheChristiansof Alexandriatomarchinprocessionon thenightof5/6January,incommemorationoftheNativity;andas lateas385A.D.itwasstillthecustomoftheBishopofthedaytoproceedovernighttoBethlehemandreturninstatetoJerusalemonJanuary 6.AloneamongtheChristianpeoples theArmeniansstillretainthatdatefor thegreatFeast.
ThechangefromJanuary6toDecember25beganintheearlypartof theFourthCentury.Duringthe
AfewweeksafterLockyerhadsettledhispartyatAlbany,Captain StirlingleftSydneyinthe"Success," tocompletetheexplorationofthe countryinthevicinityoftheSwan River,alreadybegunbyKing,andto ascertainitssuitabilityasaconvict settlement.Reachingwhatweto-day knowasFremantleonMarch6,1827, apartywasdespatchedsome15miles uptheSwanRiver,wheretheyplantedseveralgardens.Thehillswere alsoexplored,andnamedtheDarling Ranges.Ontheisland,namedby theFrenchBuacheIsland,agarden wasalsoplanted,andacow,3goats, and3sheepsentashore.ThisisGardenIsland.The"Success"sailed awayagainonMarch21st.,toconvey toGovernorDarlinganenthusiastic reportofthepotentialities(blessed word!)oftheWest,andsowelldid Stirlingpresentthisreportthathewas deputedtocarryit,withGovernor Darling'scomments,toLondon.
TheoutcomeofCaptainStirling'sreportinpersontoLondonwashisappointmentasLieutenantGovernorof thecolony,andtheentrustingtohis careyfthefirstcoloniststoWestern Australia.Accordingly,onJune2, 1829,theParmelia,a"ship"of443tons, carryingacomplementof69people, includingGovernorStirlingmadeits appearanceoutsideFremantle.It nearlymadeitsdisappearanceatthe Sametime,forithadthemisfortune torunagroundontheParmeliaBank, offCarnacIsland.Afterananxious time,andwiththeassistanceofa man-of-war,whichhappenedtobein theharbour,itwasgotoffwithoutmishap.Theman-of-war,itwasnow found,hadbeendespatchedtoformallytakepossessionofthecountry,and exactlyamonthpreviously,May2, 1829,theUnionJackhadbeenplanted withalldueceremony.Fromthecaptainofthisship,Fremantletakesits name,althoughhespeltitFreemantle.
TheSt.Mary'sBranchofthe H.A.C.13.S.helditshalf-yearlymeetingonTuesdayevening,andtheattendanceofmembersandvisitorswas largerthanusual.PastPresident Bro.Crawfordinstalledthenewlyelectedofficersintotheirrespective chairs,anddweltinanimpressive manneronthedutyfallingtoeachofficer,andimpressingonthenewly-installedbrothersthenecessityofeach doinghisutmosttoadvancethesociety.Duringthepastyearanefforthasbeenmadetosecuresomeof thesplendidtalentwhichisannually leavingtheC.B.C.,andthefollowing ex-studentsarenowmembers:-B.J. O'Keefe,CliffCarigg,JackMoore,A. J.Boylen,JackO'Leary,JimDolan, MauriceMulchinough,andR.J.Boylen,andwiththeactiveassistanceof theBrothers,itisfeltthateveryexstudentcouldbeenrolledmembersof theonlybenefitsocietyinAustralia thatsupportsCatholiceducationand perpetuatestheworkoftheCatholic schools.Iftheburdenwhichthis branchhasplacedonitsfundsinregardtothescholarshipsistocontinue, thenthebranchwillneedtheactive co-operationofeveryCatholic.

Attheconclusionoftheroutinebusinessadebatetookplaceon"Prohi. bition,"theaffirmativesidebeingin thehandsofBro.DanSullivan.He arguedthatalcholicliquorwasamenacetothehealth,happiness,andsafetyofthepeople.Itcloggedour nationalprogress,andwasastainon moderncivilisation.Itcausedinefficiency,andwasdirectlyresponsible foralargepercentageofthepoverty inourmidst.OnlyProhibitionfull andcompletecoulddealwiththeevil. Inaneloquentperorationheasked thepeopletoriseanddriveforever thedevastatingmonster,alcoholic drink,fromtheland.
GovernorStirlingdidnotlandat onceonthemainland.Helanded,instead,onGardenIsland,whichthree yearsbefore,hehadthoughtfullycultivatedtosomeextent.Theexact dateonwhichheshiftedtotnemainlandisnotknown.WhenCaptain -FreemantlesailedawayinAugust,he reportedthatStirlinghaddecidedto makehisheadquartersatPerth,and probablyhedidsoafewdayslater,. forthefirstfoundationstonewaspub' liclylaidinPerthonAugust8,1829. Inadditionttomarkingthefirstsettlementinthecolony,December25has alsoanotherinterestforus.OnDecember25,1829,thefirstthoroughbred "Sandgroper"intheStatewasborn, inthepersonofthelateMrs.S.P. Phillips.

Mr.S.J.Hill,whohadchargeof thecaseagainst"Prohibition,"admittedtheevilsofintemperance,but quotedstatisticstoshowthatinAmerica,wheresomeStateshadadopted Prohibition,theresultsclaimedforit hadnoteventuated.Itwasthecry offanatics,andifgiveneffecttowould causeanenormousdislocationofindustryandtrade,involvinghardship, andasstatisticsculledfromindependentauthoritiesclearlyproved,withoutonesumadvantage.Acertain -.1."4110,withviialieryremotepossibilityof gain,wassurelynotthechancean intelligentpeopleshouldtake.
Mr.R.Boylenactedasjudge,but wasassistedbysixjurors,whoon theconclusionofthejudge'sremarks retired.Thejurywereabsentabout aquarterofanhour,andhavingcarefullyconsideredtheprosandconsof thecase,returnedaverdictagainst "Prohibition,"
PontificateofJuliusI.(337-352),itwas directedthattheFeastoftheNativityshouldbecelebratedonDecember 25,andintheCalendarofPhilocalus, compiledinRomein354A.D.,and stillextantintheVatican,thisdate isshown.Itwasnot,however,until St.JohnChrysostomintroducedthe customintoAntiochin386,andlater asBishopintoConstantinoplein398, thatitspreadtotheWesternpeoples. Fromthe4th.CenturyalltheCalendarsoftheWestshowChristmasDay asfallingonDecember25,andthatit wasadoptedintheEastaboutthe sametimeisseenfromthediscourseof PaulofEmesabeforeCyrilofAlexandria,in433A.D.,delivered"onthe FeastoftheNativity,29Choiak(i.e., 25th.December)."
