MRS.M.COSTELLO,TUAM,IRELAND. Recently,inTuam,Ireland,atthe fineoldageof92,Mrs.M.Costello.sisteroftheRev.Bro.Bodkin,ofClontartOrphanage.passedtohereternal reward.Thedeceasedwasthewidow ofthelateMichaelCostello,aonetimeprominentmerchantofTuam,and adaughterofthelateThomasBodkin, ofTullinadaley.Anephew,Dr. BodkinMahon.isoneoftheleading physiciansofGalway.Mrs.Costello. afterherhusband'sdeath,continued toliveinTuam,andwasrespectedfar andwidebyallclassesofthepeople. AtEsperance,onJanuary15th,of thisyear,KevinHeenan,apupilofthe ChristianBrothers'College,Perth,actedwithconspicuousbraveryinsaving thelifeofayoungladwhohadfallen fromthejettyintothewater.Being tillabletoswim,hewassooninserious difficulty,whenhisplightwasobservedbyyoungHeenan,whoisjust fifteenyearsold.Withoutanyhesitationhedivedinaftertheboy.and aftergreatdifficu-,tysucceededin
bringinghimtotheshore,bothrescued andrescurerbeingbythistimein corestraits.Theformerwasunconscious.butaftervigorousmethodsof resuscitationhadbeencarriedonfor sometime,herevived.
Theparentsweredeeplythankful, andtomarkinaslightwaytheirappreciationofthebraveact,decidedto presenttheyoungherowithagold medal.Thisfunctiontookplaceatthe ChristianBrothers'CollegeonTuesday last.Mr.A.E.Green,M.L.A.,inmakingthepresentation,paidaglowing tributetotheheroicactofthelad,and expressedhispleasureinperforming suchapresentation,especiallyashe wasapupiloftheChristianBrothers' College.Hehadmettheboysofthe Collegeinmanyplaces,andunder manycircumstances,andhadalways beenstruckbytheirgentlemanlyconductandmanlybehaviour.Thename ofHeenan,headded,wasconnected withmanyaheroicactonthebattlefieldsofEurope.

Acoupleofyearsago,atthetime whentheRussianbearwaseatingoutof JohnBull'shand,thetroublewasattributedtoSinnFeiners,supportedby Germangold.Now,whentheaggressivepolicyofatriumphantIreland wanes,andwhenRussiarepudiatesits formerfood,RussianBolshevismgets thecreditofcausingthetrouble.However,itisonlyfairtosaythatthere maybeanothersidetothequestion. Menofmoney,sometimescalledCapitalists,andthosewhoaidedandabettedthem-secretserviceagents,censors,spies,andpoliticians-raisedthe gageofbattlein1916.Wealthnominatedconscriptionforthewelter,and whileabovetheapplausepressand politicalminionsrangthefalsecryof patriotism,andthefreedomofhumanity,theCapitalistashe,then,thought, wasforgingchainstobindtheworker tothechariotofsocialslavery.Capitalismwasneversincere.Politicians andpressmenwereneversincere.Their patriotismhadlittleornopurityof motive;theywereinthemovement forsordidgain,andthatalone.The prevalentgullibilityofapeoplewho havebeentoobusytoeducatethemselveswasuseful,anditwereonlyby. anaccidentthattheCapitalist,whose ignorancebluffedhimintothedelusion thathislittlebriefdressedauthority wastobeperennial,didnotsucceedin sacrificingthefairandbravesonsof Australiaonthealtarofwar.

TheLordMayorofMelbourne,at therequestoftheMinisterforIlealth 'Mr.Bowser),convenedaconferenceof representativesofthevariousmetropolitanmunicipalitiestoconsider theinfluenzaepidemic.TheconferenceassembledattheMelbourne TownHallonthe28th.ult,andspent abouttwohoursincriticisingthe Healthadministration.Mr.Bowser expressedsurprisethatheshouldhave metwithcriticismwhenhehadexpectedadvice.Ileaskedtheconference toappointacommitteetokeepin touchwiththeIlealthDepartment, buttheconferencedeclinedtodoit, andadjournedforaweek,expressing thehopethat,inthemeantime,the Ministrywouldformulatesomepolicy fortheguidanceofmunicipalities.The wholetenorofthespeecheswasademandforadefiniteplanandpolicy fromtheMinistry.

BarcellopointedoutthattheCoilingwoodmunicipalityhadinstalledanhospital,buthadnotopenedit.The CityofMelbournehadnotevenin. stalledanhospital.TheRichmond Councilinstalledanhospital.andon theurgentadviceoftheDepartment, hadclosedit.Withinafortnight,however,thecouncilwasaskedtoreopen it.Thatpositionweeintolerable,and itwasdesirablethatcompulsoryactionshouldbetakenbythemunicipalitiestoseethatallwereputonafair andequitablebasis.
