SaystheSydney"Freeman,"ofJanuary30: Itwaswithlittleastonishmentthat wereadinTuesdaymorning'scablesa yarnaboutGermangoldfinancingthe SinnFeinersinIreland.Wehad,in fact,beenwaitingforsomeannouncementofthekind,fortheIrishsituation,fromthelittlepeepswegetof it,isapparentlybecomingsocritical thattheCarson-controlledEnglishGovernmentmusteitherutilisethe"strong hand"oracquiesceinthecohntry's demandforself-determination.Ifa policyofcoercionistobepursued,and ifthevoiceofSinnFeinistobesilenced,ViscountFrenchwouldnaturallywishtobeprovidedwithabetter excuseforextrememilitarymeasures thanhenormallypossesses.Obviously.withthePeaceConferencesitting, itwouldbebadtactics,tosaythe leastofit,ifEnglandfranklymane Irelandalittlehellonearthmerelybecauseshepersistsindemandingthe rightsofasmallnation.ButanIrelandworkingintheinterestsofGermanyandreceivingGermanpay mightbebeyondthepaleofAlliedsympathy.Whatwonder,then,that theoldbogeysaredraggedoutofthe garret,andthenewsispublished frommysterious"neutral"sourcesthat theGermansareemployingevery meanstohastenanIrishinsurrection! Thetrick,however,isfartooclumsily performedthistime;itisevenaclumsiereffortthanthatwhichincludedan IrishsoldierandaFord.collapsible boatinitsparaphernalia,andwhich deceivedsofewthatnothingmorehas everbeenheardofit.Germany,itis usefultoremember,isnowadefeated andbrokencountry,withdomestic troublesenoughtooccupyherwhole attention,andnothingthathappens inIrelandcanpossiblyassisther.An armedrevolutioninthecountrycould tpossiblysucceedunderthepresentconditions,andevenifitdidsucceeditcouldnotremotelybetterGermany'spositionatthePeacetable.If sheeverseriouslyconsideredIrelann asausefulpawnintheinternational game,itwasbeforetheintervention oftheUnitedStates.WhenAmerica cameintothewarGermanyknew whattheendwouldbe.andanygold shehadtosparewasprobably'directedtoquartersfarmoreinfluentialthan unhappyIreland.Butanystickis goodenoughtobeatadogwith,and theLloydGeorgeGovernmentapparentlyhopesthatbyplayingonthe anti-GermanprejudicesofthePeace delegatesitmaystillbepossibletorun thePrussiangameinacountrythat hasreallythegreatestclaimofallthe littlepeoplesforHomeRuleinitsentirety.TheSinnFeiners,naturally,willbitterlyresentthislatestattempttoconfusetheIrishissue.TheyhaverepeatedlychallengedtheEnglishGovernmenttoproveanyconspiracybetweenSinnFeinandGermanagents, andtheEnglishGovernmenthassofar failedtojustifyitsinsinuations.As weknow,theCasementtrialestablishednothingagainsttheSinnFeinorganisation.Sincethenwehaveheard alotaboutpro-GermanplotsandGermantreasure,andIrishmenhavebeen imprisonedbythescore,butinno courtofjusticehasEnglandproduced satisfyingevidenceofpro-GermaninspirationinthetacticsofSinnFein. Asamatteroffact.theSinnFeiners aretoobusytobeanythingbutproIrish.Theclaimsoftheirowncoml. tryovershadowseverythingelse.They hadnomoresympathywithGermany'sdreamsofworldconquestthan theaverageEnglishman.Indeed,Irelandhassomeverybittermemories oftheGermanbreed.Itwasthe Carsonites.andnottheSinnFeiner,
whoreallyencouragedGermanytobelievethatinIrelandshewouldhave anactiveally.Yes,itwastheevil geniusthatswaystheCoalitionGovernmentto-daywhoinvokedtheof sistanceoftheKaiser,andimported armsfromGermanyinordertoplunge Irelandintoacivilwarifhedidnot havehisway.Hehadhisway,and theGermancannonwasnotwanted: butbecausehedidhavehisway,and themajorityofIrelandresentedit,and ahandfulofIrishmenperpetratedan heroicactoffolly,thepatrioticparty inIrelandhasbeenslanderedever since.Andto-dayIreland'sPecksnitfianpersecutors,insteadofcourageouslyowningthattheycondemn Irelandforitsclaimstoself-determination,hypocriticallytryandpersuade theonlookingnationsthatEngland's militarymeasuresinIreland,aremerelydirectedagainstGermanintrigues andplottings. Howlong,wewonder,doMr.Lloyd Georgeandhiscroniesthinktheycan humbugtheChristianworldinconnectionwithtileIrishquestion?They triedthestoriesofpro-Germanplots inAmerica,butAmerica'sdemand thatPresidentWilsonshalltightIreland'scase.showshowlittletheywere believedinthatcountry.Inthegreat self-governingDominionsthetrashy yarnsareonlyswallowedbythe Orangeclique.InEnglanditselfthere isnowageneraltendencytocondemn theAscendancycrowdforitsmischievousmisrepresentationofIrishaffairs.Withthesigningofthearmistice,andGermanynolongeramenace,manyEnglishmenhavebeenable toapproachtheIrishquestionmore sanely.andtheyunderstandthestupidityofdenyingIrelandwhatthe restoftheworldisaskedtoclaim ButweknowthattheAscendancyfolk inEnglishpoliticswillgot..great lengthstopreservetheiranti-Irishpolicy.Therecentelectionshavemade themverypowerful,too.Butwerely ontheweaknessoftheircasetobring abouttheirultimatedefeatfarmore quicklythanpresentindicationswould suggest.Thetroublehasbeenthat thecaseforIrelandwasalwaysconfinedtoanEnglishcourt.andIreland's fatehasdependedonanEnglishverdict.Beforeaninternationaljury Irelandwillnothavetocombatbiases andprejudicesandself-interest.The dayIrelandreallygetsahearingat thePeaceConference,then,should markthedawningofIrishliberty.And thatshewillgetahearingweareconfidentwhenwerememberwhatthe Irishhavemeantinthehistoryof AmericaandFrance,andthewonder. fulparttheyplayedintherecentwar.

Meantimetheworldhasbeenmoving;eventhebackwoodsmanhascometo knowtheCatholicChurchisinreality thegreatestmoralpowerintheworld, andthatthePopeofRomeisthemost prominentpersonageinChristendom. Thereweremanyrecurrencesduring theMiddleAges.ThefirstAmericar. epidemichappenedin1647,andithad anunusuallyhighmortality.There werenearly6,000deathsintheBarba.. doesandSt.Kittsalone.Cromwell diedofthisinfection.Itspreads, whenepidemic,fromeasttowestalong thetraderoutes.Therewereoutbreaksin1830-33,1836-37,1847-48,but in1889-90thediseasewentroundthe earth. In1889itstartedinTurkestan,in June:bytheendofDecemberithad gonewesttotheMississippiRiver;at theendofthefollowingMarchitwas inCalcutta,andbyDecember,1890,it hadreachedKashmirintheHindu KushMountains.Itcircledtheworld inayearandahalf.Therewere4,560 deathsinPhiladelphiaalone,between October4and18;inPennsylvaniabetweenOctober1and15therewere 10,086deaths,or777morethanallthe deathsofAmericansoldierskilleddirectlyinbattlesincethebeginningof thewar.

Dicksonfoundthesameimmunity amongthepostalandcustomofficials inLondon.AttheUrbanHospitalin Berlintherecurrenceswereonly8per cent.Manypersonshavecertainlya congenitalimmunity.Somephysiciansandnurseswhoareinconstant contactwithpatientsduringwholeepi demicsdonotsuccumbtotheinfection. Thetreatmentistechnicalandshould begivenbyaphysician.Thepopular notionthatquinineiseffectiveiserroneous.Ifgiveninlargequantitythis drugisinjurious,ifinsmallquantities itisuseless.Alcoholincreasesthe headachePatientsaccustomedtoalcoholmayrequirewhisky,butthisis tobeusedbyaphysician.
Anepidemiclastsinaparticularlocalityfromsixtoeightweeks,andthen subsidestoafewsporadiccasesIn 1889theepidemiclastedinMassachusettssevenweeks,inAustraliaeight weeks,inNewfoundlandsixweeks. Thereweresevererecurringepidemics uptothespringof1892. Thediseasehasmanynames,butinfluenza,fromtheItalianinfluenzadi freddo,influence,effect,ofcold,and grippearethecommonestnamesat present.Spanishinfluenzaisameaninglesspopulartitle.Thetermgrippe, whichcametouseabout1712,isusuallyderivedfromtheFrenchagripper,to attack,orfromgripper,togrip.Hence theEnglishnamegrip.Somehave triedtoassociatethenamewiththe Slavonicchripka,hoarseness,butthis isfar-fetched. Theinfectiongraduallydiminishesin virulenceandappearssporadicallyfor severalyearsaftertheepidemicceases, thendisappears,untilanewintensified infectionreappears.Afteritdisappearsitsmemoryremainsasahandy diagnosistocovertheguessesof quacks,butthediseasecanbefound somewhereatalltimes,eveninsummer.Thecauseofthediseasehasnot beencertainlyestablished.Thein. fluenzabacillus,foundbyPfeifferin 1892.ispresentinthedisease,andis thoughttobethecause,butthisfact hasnotbeentechnicalysettled. Influenzabeginsquitesuddenlywith paininthehead,back,eyes,limbs,and joints.Theremaybeseverefrontal headache.andmarkedprostration. Thereisfeverfrom101to104degrees. Thenoseandthroatarecongested,with veryrareexceptions.Pneumoniais quitecommonafterafewdays,and thisbringsaboutmostofthedeaths. Thiscomplicationhasappearedinall theepidemics,butitisespeciallysevereinthepresentone.Thepneumonia differsfromtheordinaryformsofthe disease.Itmaydisappearwithremarkablerapidity,orcausedeathin twoorthreedaysfromprofoundtoxemiaandvasomotordepression.There areverymanyothersecondaryafflictionspossible,butthepneumoniais themostimportant.Theincidenceof pneumoniain1889wasfrom5to10per cent.,andthemortalityfrompneumoniainGermanyinthatepidemicwas 17percent.Inthepresentepidemic theincidenceisevidentlymuchhigher. Thenervoussystemisaffectednext infrequencytotherespiratoryorgans. Thegastro-entericsymptomsmaybe grave.Theheartandkidneysalsoare involvedinmanycases.Theheart maybeinjuredevenwhenthepatient washealthybeforetheinfection.The kidneyconditionasarulegoesbackto normalafterthepatientrecoversfrom thegrip.Inalcoholicpatientsthere isamarkedtendencytodeliriumtremens.especiallyifpneumoniasetsin. Alcoholicsandfatflabbycasesdobanly.Thereisalwaysariseinthemortalityfromtuberculosisinanepidemic ofinfluenza. Thenumberofpersonsaffectedby thediseaseinaparticularcityin1889 averagedashighas50percent.ofthe entirepopulation.Blochestimated thatinFrance75percent,ofthenationhadthedisease.Themortality frominfluenzaaloneisslight.In1889. of55.263casesintheGermanarmy. only-0.1percent.diedfromthedisease directly.Whenthedeathsfrompneumoniaandtheothercomplicationsare addedthedeath-rateofanycityis doubled.Therewillbenearlyasmany deathsfromtheinfluenzawithitscomplicationsasfromallotherdiseases combined.InGermanyintheepidemic
