WhentheconditionofIrelandwas underdiscussionintheHouseofCommonsjustbeforethelastmailsleft England,Mr.HerbertSamuelwarned theGovernmentagainstconscription. Thenforthefirsttimesincehisreturn fromtheUnitedStatesMr.T.P.O'ConnorrosetoaddresstheHouse.He waswarmlycheered,andmembers flockedintohearwhathehadtosay ontheAmericanattitudetowardsIreland.Mr.O'Connorsaid:Ihopethe Housewillallowme,asonewhohas exceptionalopportunitiesofstudying thepositioninAmerica,togivethe HousesomeimpressionswhichIgot frommyvisit.Theconditionswere somewhatexceptionalinmycase,becauseonallpreviousvisitstoAmerica Ipracticallyconfinedmyintercourseto thoseofmyownraceinAmerica.My ownracewasnotquitesocordialto measonpreviousoccasions.Instead ofmeetingthevesselwithagreen bannerandaloudband,andwitha deputationoutsidethequay,Ilanded oneSundaymorningonanemptyquay, withoutasinglepersontogivemea welcome.That,toalargeextent,for thetimeatleast,meantthatIhad closerintercoursewithmenofother racesthanwithmyown,andinthat wayIhadsomewhatexceptionalopportunities,andveryinstructiveopportunities,ofgettingatwhatImaycall thesoulandmindoftheAmerican people.IwassenttoAmericabythe lateMr.Redmond,andmymandate wasrenewedbyMr.Dillonwhenhe succeededthelateMr.Redmond.Mymissionwastoobtainfinancialsupport formyparty,butIwassentwithan evengreaterpurpose,andthat.wasto advocatetothepeopleofourownrace andtotheAmericanpeoplegenerally thepolicyforwhichMr.Redmond stoodandforwhichmyhon.friendMr. Dilloninasfullasensestandsto-day. Inthesecircumstances,asIhavealreadysaid,IwenttoWashington,and Ihadanynumberofinterestingexperiencesthere.Iaddressedwhat1 wastoldwasoneofthemostinfluentialaudiencesthateverassembledin Washington,includingaCabinetMinister-sixmembersoftheSenate,18 membersoftheHouseofRepresentatives,andmostoftheforeignmissions. Oneoftheplacesthateveryart-lovingvisitortoNewNorciacanseeas oftenashepleasesistheChurch-choir, situatedashortdistancefromtheMonastery.ThechurchofthisMission, wheretheMonksassembleonreligious festivalstosingthedivinepraises,as seenfromtheoutside,hascertainly nothingtospeciallyattracttheadmirationoftheartist.Altogether,it isapooredifice,ofroughmasonry, withoutanydeterminatestylethat,beyondthefacadeandbelfry,whichare ofrecentconstruction,canboastofno othermeritthanthatofbeingentirely theworkofthepioneermissionaries.To thiswantofintrinsicmeritisadded thefactthatitisinadequatetothe necessitiesofthepresenttime;ason accountofitsrestricteddimensions,the presentchurchcannotaccommodate thelargenumberofthefaithfulwho gathertoitforsolemnreligiousfunctions,thetimehasarrivedwhenthe monksarethinkingofreplacingitby anotherofbetterstyleandlargercapacity.Allthis,however,referstothe exterior,for,ifthevisitoren'ersthe sacrededifice,hewillatoncefeelagreeablysurprisedtofindthattheinterior offersastrikingcontrasttatheplain appearanceoftheexterior.Hewill findhimselfinachurchaltogether tastefullydecorated,brightlylighted, splendidlyventilated,havingthreealtars,twolateralandthehigh,allfinely decorated,andrichincarving,andbesidesabrilliantsanctuary.Then. havingenteredthechoir.andthough itcannotcompare.eitherinsizeor richness,evenwiththepoorestofthe abbeysandcathedralsofEurope.still thevisitorcannotfailtoadmireits beautifuldecorationandthevarietyof pictureshangingonitswalls,suchas hecouldnothaveanticipated.The firstsix,threeoneachsideofthe choir,allofthesamesize,tenfeetby six,areoriginalsofFatherLesmes:the centralone,abovetheseatoftheAbbot,whichrepresentsoneofthefalls ofChristundertheCross,onhiswayto Calvary,isacopybythesameFather. madefromanoriginalofthefamous painter,Tiepolo:oftheothertwo,that showingChristintheGardenofGethsemane,isbyanunknownauthor,and thatofSt.TeresareceivinganornamentfromtheDivineInfant,isby Maratta.Thefollowingisabriefaccountofthepainterineachofthefirst sixrepresentations.Standingwith backtothealtar,ontheright.isseen:

TheMidlanddistrictPopularGirl Competition,uponwhichattentionhas beenfocussedforthepastthreeanda halfmonths,isnowathingofthepast, aridwilloccupyacherishedplacein thememoryoftheparishionersofMidland,Guildford,andBellevueasone ofthemostpopularandsuccessfuleffortsinauguratedtoaugmentthe ChurchandSchoolfundsofthoseparishes.
Itwasindeedahappythoughtthat promptedtheorganisersoftheeffort thatittaketheformofaPopularGirl Competition,for,apartfromthesuccessfulfinancialresultachieved,asocial bondwasfirmlyestablishedbythe peoplelocatedfarandwidethroughout thedistrictbeingbroughttogetherin socialintercourseandfriendlyrivalry. Thatambitionfatheredthethoughtis beyondquestion,foritisnownoseccetthatthepeopleofthevariousparishestakeabigprideintheirchurch buildings,andthecompetitionwasa directmoveinswellingthefundsfor thispurpose.Particularlyproudare thepeopleofMidlandofthefinegroup ofbuildingswhichconstitutethe Church,Convent,andSchool-rooms, thelatterbeingarecentacquisition theirsentimentbeingsharedinthisdirectionbyBelevue,whichcombines withthemotherparishwithherChurch servicesandactivities.WestGuildfordtakesadealofprideinthefine Church-SchoolandConventacquired somethreeyearsago,whileGuildford Church,thoughnotasnewandornamentalindesignasitssisteredifices, holdsawarmplaceintheheartsof Guildfordiansforlongandfaithfulservice.
Popularopinionsupportingtheide, notimewaslostinnominatingand electingcandidatestotakethe.field anddobattlefortheirvariousparishes, theselectedladiesbeing:MissMcCormick,Midland;MissWilloughby,Belleveu;MissTroy,Guildford. Thenfollowedaperiodofardent activityonthepartofthecandidatds andtheirsupporters.Socialswerearranged;raffleswereorganised;pinprickcardsscatteredbroadcast throughoutthefourhemispheresofthe district,andnostoneleftunturnedin awhole-heartedefforttosecurefunds. Sir,-Inanoteinyourpaperfrom Dr.Elkingtonto-dayhegivesyoua viewoftheapplicationoftheArchbishop,whichisquitemisleading.On Fridaymorningapriestwaiappointed bytheArchbishoptoactaschaplain, andvisitedDr.ElkingtonattheCustomsHouse.Thatofficertoldhim, theanswerwouldbegivenonSaturday.OnSaturdayhedistinctlyrefused,statingthatifaCatholicpriest wereallowedintothequarantinethe variousProtestantdenominations wouldalsoapply,andthattherewere noquartersinquarantinereadyfor suchpurposes.TheseweretheamazingreasonsgivenbyamaninaChristiancommunitywhoboastshehasno timeforpriestsorparsons,forfailing togivedyingmenandwomen.manyof whomhavedonesplendidworkforthe Alliesinthewar,theconsolationof religion.Inmyexperiencesucharrogantandhigh-handedactionisunparelleled.

HisGracetheArchbishopofSydneypresidedatalargemeetingofprotestattheChapterHall,onWednesday evening,whentfiefollowingresolution wasunanimouslycarried,representativesfromallCatholicsocietiesbeing present:"ThatthismeetingofCatholics,assembledunderthepresidencyof hisGracetheArchbishop,protestsmost stronglyagainsttheactionoftheauthoritiesoftheQuarantineStationin placingobstaclesinthewayofapriest presentinghimselfforresidenceinthe quarantineareaforthepurposeofmmisteringtothesickanddying,andthis meetingstronglyprotestsagainstthe pretextusedintheshapeofmilitary chaplains,andalsoastopersonaltemperament,and,asanumberofsouls havepassedawaywithoutreceiving thelastritesoftheChurchwhilstthe priestwasaskingforadmittance,appeals,inthenameofChristianityand humanitytothePrimeMinistertoappointaCommissionofInquirytoreportupontheextraordinaryatti:ude oftheauthoritiesinthismatter.-

DeathofC.B.McLeod, Deepandwidespreadregretwasexpressedincricketcircleswhenitwas madeknownthatCharlesE.McLeod hadpassedawayrecently.Apartfrom hisprowessinthefield,thedeceased cricketermadehimselfverypopularby reasonofhisunassumingandgentlemanlycharacter.Itisbutthebarest truthtosaythatCharlieMcLeodnever hadanenemy,andallthroughhislong andsuccessfulcareerhismostprominentcharacteristicwasaninnateunselfishness.Toyoungplayershismannerwasparticularlykindandcharming, andhisadvicewasalwaysreadyforthe mereasking. Theburningquestionoftheweek hasbeenwhetherchaplainsshould beadmittedintoquarantinestationsornot. Andforacertainportionofthecommunity, andonewhichcounts,thiswasa matterofthegravestimportance.We maymentionattheoutset,thatduty istheonlyattractionaquarantinestationoffers,anddutymustbedone even'thoughtheheavensshouldfall. Atimetherewaswhenchaplainswere selectedtofacetheburninganddeathdealinghellofthebattleline,buteven therecomparativesecuritywasapart oftheprogramme,andthiswasserved upinallthefantasticandalluring trappingsincidentaltoawar-heroand apatriot.Butthepropositionwhich staredusinthefacewasofanentirelydifferentcharacter.Thereisno limelightconnectedwiththematter;it looksmorelikeamatterofquicklime.Catholicsknowofandbelievein theufficiencyoftheSevenSacraments. Therefore.they'believeintheSacramentsforthedying.Theyevenknow fullwellthatallrisksmustbetaken toensuretheirspiritualwelfare, Andthisisthereasonwe,Catholics, havetaken,'andwillcontinue totake,suchadeterminedstandin thisveryimportantmatter.Over East,eventheArchbishopofSydney wasbannedfromvisitingthecontacts. WeenteredthestrongestofprotestsagainsttheactionoftheFederalGovernmentinpreventingclergymenfromministeringtothespiritual needsoftheiiflock.Atimetherewas whenthepriestwasdebarredfromvisitingandadministeringthelastSacramentstothedyingconvict.Thatwas brutal,buttheattitudeofthepresent authoritieswasinhumanandghoulish.Ourlong-lippedpatrioticoratorsexpatiateuponthegloryofour race,uponthejustice,andthefreedom ofourBritishinstitutions,uponour highcivilisation,andyet,canthey pointouttousanythingthatmoreap. proachessavagerythandenyingthe dyingthebenefitsofthereligiousrites whicharemoresacredthanlife?To denytheserightstothedyingistantamounttosettingthehumanbeing andthegood-for-nothingandloathsome,deceasedmongreluponanequal status.Wehearoftheindignities imposeduponNurseCavellbyhostile powers,andwhilewedeprecatebitterly theactionoftheHun,canwereason. ablyholdabrieffortheParliamentary figure-headswhostandbetweenadying woman,anurse,too,inthehourwhen thedistancebetweentimeandeternity wasinconceivablyshort?Inthe Cavellcase,theheatandpassionincidentaltowarmypossiblyappealtotheimpartialcritic,butwhat canwesaywhenmendeny,incold blood,theconsolationsofreligioneven tothedying?Andwhoarethe patientsatthedifferentquarantine stations?Aretheyenemies?No, Australianpeople,manyofthemare theboyswhohaveriskedlifeandlimb indefenceofthelibertiesweallSQ dearlycherish.Theyhavegoneinto theyawningmouthsofmorethanan hundredhellsforoursakes,andyet, iftheycallforaministerofreligionin thelandtowhichtheybelong,the answerisaflatrefusal.Thethought istoorevoltingtoponderupon.No savagescouldbemorehideouslyinhuman.Duringtheweek,weobservedinthepapersthatamongthevictimsawayinFijiIslandswereincluded twoCatholicpriests.Circumstantially, thatunhappyincidentpointsoutthat moralityandreligion,andevenhumanity,areatahigherebbinthesedusky islandsthanintheheartofourmuchlaudedAustralianCommonwealth, ThereisnotapriestinAustraliawho wouldnotwillinglygototheaidof thesesufferingvictims,TheChurch whichgaveaFatherDamientothe poorlepersisnotwanting,evenin Australia,formenwhohaveapro. found,andpracticalappreciationofthe self-sacrificingspiritpreachedbythe MasterontheCross.Thereisnoapplauseassociatedwiththeaffair;on thecontrary,togetamongthesesick anddyingpeopleistocourtdeath.But deathalwaysbeforedishonour,andfor thosewhohaveanysubstantialfaithin alifetocome,whatcouldbemorede siredthandeathinharness?To cometoavitalpointintheobjections oftheselegislators,theysaytnal theadmissionofaclergymanwill spreadthedreaddiseaseinthecommunity,butCatholicpriestsarequite preparedtobecomeinterneesofthe quarantinestations,andconsequently, toremovethatdanger.Evenwerethe prieststoobjecttointernment,.and claimfreedomofentryandexit,the embargoplacedbytheGovernment wouldnolessstronglyprovesomeofits memberstobeinhumanmonsters.We livenotforwhatthisworldhastogive us,butfortheworldtosome,andthe manwho,onthegroundsofhealth,lets asoulstarveisonaparwithasavage. TheChristianBrothers'Collegeheld, itsannualconcertonlastWednesday night,andtheTownHallwaspacked to"thelastmanandthelastshilling." Thegymnasticswereofanorderwhich leavesnochanceofimprovement,and itisprobablethatnoschoolinthe Commonwealthcouldputsuchaprogramme.ontheboardsasthatwhich madetheaudiencegaspwithastonishmentonlastWednesdaynight.

Dr.Cranswickaloneisresponsiblefor thefoulchargeshurledagainstits;and indefendinghimselfhemustreceive noassistancefromtheotherpartners oftheTripleAlliance. Itwillberememberedthat,inhis unprovokedattacksontheCatholic sectionofthecommunity,theBishop ofGippslandimpeachedusforourwant ofpatriotisminnotsendingourdue proportiontofightfortheworld's freedom.Hisfigureswerechallenged:hisfalsestatementswereexposed. Nowhereturnswitharenewalofthe misrepresentation,andspeaksof"certaindecimalswhichmatterneitherhere orthere."Ifthecharggofdisloyalty againstusdependedona"matterof decimals"betweentheproportionof thetroopswesentandwhatwemight havesent,whywasthechargelaunched?Butitismorethana"matter ofdecimals."Dr.Cranswickstated thatourproportionofthepopulation was22percent.;andIprovedfrom authoritybeyondquestionthat,inthe Commonwealthweareonly19.8per cent.
Afterwithdrawingfromhisposition onthe"matterofdecimals,"thesentenceimmediatelyfollowingrepeatsthe originalfalsestatement:-"Thetruth aboutRome'scontributiontotheA.I.F. withthatoftheleadingdenominations. stillstands."HereIleave poorDr.Cranswick.
FortyyearsbeforethetimeofParnellthatsamepapergloatedoverthe famineinIreland,prayedthatAlmightyGodwouldplungetheisland undertheseatillnotasoulwasleft, andspokeenthusiasticallyofthegood timecomingwhen"aCatholicCelt wouldjpeasrareacuriosityonthe banksoftheShannonasaRedIndian onthebanksoftheManhattan."
SothisfoolishBishopofGippsland couldinnootherwayhavesucceeded indamningthereputationofpoor MichaelMcCarthyashehaswhenquotinginhisfavourtheLondon"Times."
TheMostCostlyBlunder. ButthetroublesofDr.Cranswickdo notendhere.Ofalltheblundershe hasmadesincelaunchinghiscrusade ofcalumnyagainstus,themostdamagingtohisreputationiscommitted whenheinvokesthenameofProfessorLeckytosupporthiscause.While hisLordshipdismissestheevidenceof MacaulayandSydneySmithwitha flourishofhispen,hepaysthisdeservedcomplimenttoLecky:"Agreat andthoroughlyimpartialhistorian.No Englishscholarcommandsgreaterand morerespectfulattentionthanthis man;noneismoreutterlyunbiassed thanhe."
Iaminthoroughagreementwithhis Lordshipinacceptingtheevidenceof thisgreatIrish-Protestanthistorianon allquestionsrelatingtotheChurchand StateinIreland.IfDr.Cranswick hadreadLecky,hewouldnothave committedhimselftothesuicidalpolicyofappealingtothecourtofLecky. Tothat"impartialandunbiassed" courtIwillinglysubmitthemainquestionunderdiscussion-viz.,IsIrelanda Priest-riddenoraParson-plundered Country?Lecky'scharmingandilluminatingvolume,"TheLeadersofPublicOpinioninIreland,"islargelydevotedtothequestionbetweenthe BishopofGippslandandmyself.The quotationsarefromthenewedition, revisedandenlarged.(Longman's, 1871.1

HighwaymeninEpiscopalRobes. 'Fakingatrandomafewcasesinthe volumebeforeme,Ifind(page99)that theBishopofDerry,whowasalsoLord Bristol."retiredtoItaly,wherehelivedformanyyearsawildandscandalouslife,retainingtheemoluments, bututterlyneglectingthedutiesofhis bishopric,scoffingopenlyatreligion, andadoptingwithoutdisguisethelax moralhabitsofNeapolitansociety."He spentmostoftheincomehewrung fromthepoorCatholicsofDerryin havingimmoralpicturespainted,to whichheattachedhisepiscopalmotto andcoatofarms!
Turningfromthisworthydivine,I find(page158)thehistoryofArchbishopAgar,whoseservicesCastelreaghemployedinrobbingIrelandof hernativeParliament.ThisGovernmenttoolwasrewardedwiththeArchbishopricofDublinin1801,andcreatedEarlofNormantonafewyearslater.Afteramassingahugefortuneby lettingchurchlandsontermsbeneficialtohisownfamily,hehasanextremelyeulogisticinscriptiontohis memoryinWestminsterAbbey,anda finebas-reliefrepresentingangelsbearingthemitreofthissaintly(?)prelate! Pages41and42,dealingwithArch. bishopBoulter,giveusanideaofthe qualificationsrequiredinthosedaysfor aProtestantbishopinIreland.Lecky saysthatBoulter'spolicywastosecure EnglishmenatanycostfortheIrish sees."Hislettersarechieflyonquestionsofmoneyandpatronage,andit iscurioustoobservehowentirelyall religiousmotivesappeartohavebeen absentfromhismindinhisinnumerablerecommendationsforchurchdignities. Hewasastrenuoussupporterofthepenalcode. Afteralongandanexceedinglyusefulandexemplarylifeof78years.Mrs. HonoraWilliams,relictofthelateMr. JohnWilliams,ofWillowgully-who pre-deceaSedherby'24years-passed awaytohereternalrewardonTuesday, the3rd.inst.Bythedeathofthe lateMrs.Williams.theNorthampton districthaslostoneofitsoldestand mostesteemedandrespectedresidents, andtheStateoneofitspioneercolonists,whomateriallyassistedinthe mouldingofitsvariousindustries,commencingintheearlyfifties.Bornin CountyClare.Ireland,HonorsMorris. sey,attheageofsixyears.cameto WesternAustraliawithherparents,the lateMrandMrs.M.Morrissey.in1846, thefamilysettlinginYork,wherethey remainedforsixyearsThenthendecidedtocometotheVictoriadistrict, permanentlymakingtheirhomeatMt. Erin,wherethelateMr.Morrisseyassistedtolaythefoundationstoneof thepastoralandagriculturalindustries ofthatextensivedistrict.Afewyears laterMissMorrisseymarriedMr.John Williams,whowasthenmanagerofthe Bowes(No.1VictoriaLocation)for thelateMr.WilliamBurges.In1860 theyoungmarriedcouplestruckout forthmselvesbytakingupalarge sliveofcountryoutfromNorthampton,makingtheirhomeatWillygully, whichtheysubsequentlyturnedintoan idealhomesteadbycombiningagriculturalanddairyingindustries,andpig andpoultryraisingwiththepastoral industry,andbringingupafamilyof eightsonsandfivedaughters.Mr. johnWilliamswasakeenbusiness man,andasajudgeofallclassesof stockhadfewequals,andwhileheattendedtothisbranchofbusiness,his goodwifedevotedmostofherattentiontothelighterdutiesattachedtoa mixedfarmingventure.Bystrenuouslydevelopingeachindustry,andhavingmanyrevenue-producingavenuesto dependupon,they,inafewyears, foundthemselveswellonthewayto prosperity,andwhenMr.Williamsdied in1894heleft,unencumbered,alarge estate.Afternearly60yearsofstrenuouslabour,Mrs.Williamsretired fromheractiveduties,takingupher residencewithhereldestdaughter, Mrs.Morrissey,andremainingwithher uptillthetimewhenthecareerofa tinetypeofChristianladywasbrought toapeacefulandahappytermination. Atrulygoodwoman,sincerefriend,a helperoftheneedy,andaconstant visitortothesickandafflicted,fullof yearsandgoodworks,sheclosedher evesindeath.DeceasedwasadevotedmemberoftheCatholicChurch, andformanyyears.andrightuptill thetimeofherillness,wastobeseenearlyeverymorningmakingherwayto Mass.Thoughthestronghandof deathhadonnumerousoccasionsvisitedherfamily,shereligiouslyboreall hertrialsandafflictionswithChristian fortitudeandpatience.Thelifeand laboursofsuchagoodandedifying woman,whoduringnighfourscore years,servedfaithfullyherGod,and lovedherneighbour,affordastimulatingexample.Ofafamilyofeightsons andfivedaughters.ninesurviveherMessrs.Thomas.Michael,Maurice, HenryandPatrick(sons),andMrs.M. J.Morrissey-(Geraldton).Mrs.T.H. Theannualconcertbytilepupilsof theConventSchooltookplaceinthe TownHallrecently,andthehigh standardwhichcharacterisedtheentertainmentinpreviousyearswasto thegreatcreditofthepupilswhotook partinitcreditablymaintainedby them,andtheenthusiasmoftheaudiencewasexcellentevidenceofitsappreciationoftheprogrammesubmitted. FatherGilroywasheldinCollieandhis popularityamongstallsectionsofthe communityafterhisseven-and-a-half years'ministrationshere,aglancein theTivoli.TheatreonMondayevening lastwouldassuredlyhavemostemphaticallydispelledsuchdoubt.The occasionwasapubliccomplimentary farewellsocialandtestimonialtothe Rev.gentleman,therebeingpresent verylargeassemblageofpersonscomprisingrepresentativesofallreligion; denominationsaswellasofeverypublic,semi-public,orprivatebodyinthe town.Inshort,sufficeittosaythatis wouldbepracticallyimpossibleforany mantohaveamoregenuinemarkof esteemandappreciationtenderedthan thatconveyedtothereverendgueston theeveofhisdepartureforAlbany,to whichplacehehasbeentransferred. Cr.Jonesfelthecouldaddverylittle totheeulogywhichhadalreadybeen voicedconcerningFatherGilroy,but hethoughtwhenhelookedroundthe hallandnoticedsomanypresenthe shouldbegratifiedatmakingsomany friends.However,he(thespeaker) wassureFatherGilroywouldmake justasmanyfriendsinAlbany,forhis individualitywassuchastoendear himtotheresidentsofanyplacewhere
thedebtwhichexistedontheChurch propertywhenhecamehere,buthe wasgoingawayleavingthatproperty inabetterpositionbyabout£5,000.Of coursethereweremanywillingworkers intheChurchwhohadworkedhard toattainsuchasplendidaccomplishment,butthegreatmeasureofsuccesswhichwasachievedwaslargely duetoFatherGilroy'sexcellentleaner. ship,organisingabilities,anduntiring energy,forover£4,000hadbeenspent ontheChurchpropertysincehecame toCollie.Hewishedtoconveyto FatherGilroy,onbehalfofthecongregationoftheChurch,theverysincere andgenuineregretwhichtheyfeltat hisdeparture,andalsoonbehalfoft/fe congregationhewishedtocongratulate himonthefactthatAlbanyhadbeen selectedasthesphereofhisfutureministratiods.
FatherGilroy,onrisingtoacknowledgetheeulogyextendedtohim,and thehandsometestimonialofwhichbe wastherecipient,saidhewasquite abashedatthenumberofeloquentand beautifulexpressionsthatthevarious speakershaduttered.Itwasoneof thoseoccasionsonwhichhenevercared tobepresent-asend-offtohimself.
Attheconclusionoftheprogramme theguestoftheeveningandanumberofrepresentativecitizens(including theRev.StephenWright,oftheMethodistChurch),alsovisitingpriests, ascendedthestage,whichhadbeen transformedandconvertedintoavery neatlookingdrawingroomfortheoccasion.Thoseoccupyingseatson eithersideoftheguestoftheevening andtheMayorwererepresentativesof theMunicipalCouncil,theRoadBoard, theTraders'Association,theclergy,the mineowners,theMiners'Union,FriendlySocieties,thecommercialandprofessionalinterestsofthetown,and variousotherbodies.Thevisiting priestswereFathersGriffin,Finnigan, andReidy. TheMayor,beforespeakingoftheobjectofthegathering,readapologies fromMissWareandMr.Jones(who wereunabletotakepartintheprogramme),CanonBurns,andCr.Griffith waswereunabletoattend.Proceeding,theMayorsaidthatitwascustomarystgatheringsofthiskindfor thespeakerstosaytheywerepleased tobepresent.However,hewasnot pleased,foriftheywerenotlosing FatherGilroyitwouldnotbenecessarytoholdsuchafunctionasafarewelltohim.However,asithadto be,hewasgratifiedthathehadbeen askedtopresideandbeartestimony oftheesteeminwhichtheirguestwas heldbyallsectionsofthecommunity. Naturally,thepeoplemostconcerned andmostgrievedweretheadherentsL.D. FatherGilroy'sownChurch,but-the regretwasalsoofageneralnature,for hewasesteemedandhonouredbyall sectionsofthecommunity,becausehe hadbeenaprominentfigureinthelife ofCollieforcloseoneightyears.In regardtotheworkofhisownChurch, apartfromspiritualministration,he hadbeeninstrumentalinbuildinga fineschool.Hehadalsomaceexcellentuseofthewaterprovidedbythe CollieWaterScheme,ashehadtransformedthegroundsinwhichhisChurch andSchoolarelocatedfromawildernessintooneofthebeautyspotsof Collie.HecongratulatedFatherGilroyonhistransfertoAlbany,and alsointhehappycircumstancessurroundinghisadventtothattown,immediatelyafterthecloseofthewarand peacewasoncemorewithus,buthe feltsurethatFatherGilroy'slifewould alwaysbeoneofpeace-hisfinecharacterandbroad-mindednesswouldalwayswinforhimfriendswhereverhis lotmightbecast.He(thespeaker) nowcametoaverypleasantpartof theproceedings,andhadpleasurein handingtotheguestoftheeveninga tokenoftheesteeminwhichhewas heldbyallsectionsofthecommunity. FatherGilroy.Aftercongratulating theMayoronhisunopposedre-election tothepositionofChiefMagistrateof thetown,therev.gentlemanspokein feelingtermsofthepersonalfriendship whichhadexistedbetweenFatherGilroyandhimselfsincehecametoCollie totheMethodistCircuitthreeyearsago. Theyhaddifferedvastlyonsomematters,particularlyonTheologicalsub. jects,butnotonpersonalaffairs.When hecametoCollieFatherGilroywas amongstthefirsttowelcomehim,and whenhehadhisdarkdaysFatherGilroywasoneofhismoatcomforting sympathisers.Althoughhedidnot havethepleasureofhearinF,theRev Fatherpreach,hefelthec;oddrealise
hewouldtakeuphisresidence.He wishedhimeverysuccessinthefuture. FatherReiayalsosaidafewwords regardingthepopularityofFather Gilroywithhisfellowpriests,aswellas ofallotherswithwhomhecamein contact. Mr.M.P.Mehony,J.P.,couldassure thelargeandrepresentativegathering presentthattheoccasionwasoneofextremeregrettohim.FatherGilroy,as acitizen.api.rtfromthemembersof hisChurchatall,wasrespectedbyall, andhewassurethatwhenhelefthere therewasnooneinColliebutwould wishhimwell.Inregardtohiswork intheChurch,hisrecordwasonetobe proudof.Notonlyhadhewipedoff
Hewouldratherthefunctionhad beencarriedoutwithouthim,butas thatcouldnotbedone,hefelthemust submitwiththebestpossiblegrace.He wassorrytoleavesuchawarm-hearted YOF people.Hehadbeeninmanyplaces, buthadnevermetafinerormore warm-heartedclassofpeople.He hopedtopayreturnvisitsfromtime totime,andkeepintouchwiththe placewherehehadsomanytrue friends.Hehadadeepinterest,not onlyinhisparish,butintheadvancementofColliegenerally.Hisinterest ineitherwouldnotabate.Hefeltit wouldnotberighttoforgethiskind friends.Hewishedhisparish,the town,andhisfriendseverysuccess.He waspleasedtoseesuchalargeand representativegatheringpresent,includingnotonlythoseofhisowncornmunity,butallothers.Hehighly valuedsuchanall-roundexhibitionof friendship.Healsovaluedthesplendidpresentationwhichithadbeen thoughtfittomaketohim,becausehe knewitwasatangibletokenoftheir esteemandfriendship,andhevalued theesteemandfriendshipshownhim bythewholecommunity.Healso thankedtheorganisersoftheentertainment,andtheperformersforhaving providedsuchanexcellentprogramme. HefeltsuchakeeninterestinthewelfareofColliethathethoughtitwould anexcellentideaifallinCollie clubbedtogetherandappointedhim theirAlbanyagent.HehopedtoassistanyCollievisitortoAlbanyto haveanenjoyableholiday.

Lieut.T.Gallagher,N.Y.,ledhismen acrosstheriver,andtheywereall caughtintheGermancounter-attack.
