Thereisanincorrectversiongivenin Morrin's"CalendarofPatentRolls" (Ireland)ofthereignsofHenryVIII., EdwardVI.,MaryandElizabeth(see Vol.I.,Preface,p.8).Wenoticethat aMr.W.P.Kelly,ThePark,Athlone, writingtothe"WestmeathIndependent"ofJuly28,1917,quotesthelatter. andhasrenderedapublicserviceby recordingit;butcautionmustbeobservedindealingwithEnglishState records.ItisindeedplainlyindicatedbyLenfantthatthememorials werecopiedbySirRobertWingfield, theambassadorofHenryVIII.atthe Vatican.Butthesecopiesofthe "TryalbetweentheFrenchandthe Englishwereallfulloferrors,"and foundtobeinaccuratebyvonder Hardt,whowenthimselfandobtained atruecopyofLeipzic,anditisthis copywhichisusedbyLenfant.The versionofthisfamoushistoricaldisputeasgiveninthe''CalendarofPatentRolls"isapparentlytheversion putoutforthebenefitofHenryVIII., whowasatthattimecontendingfor precedenceovertheFrenchking.For thispurposeheassumedthestyleof KingofIreland.asbeinganolder kingdomthanthatofFrance.To suithispurpose,theproceedingsof theCouncilofConstancearequoted asgivingprecedencetotheKingdom ofEngland,butsuchwasbynomeans thefact.Itisclearfromtheauthoritieswehavequoted,aswellasfrom Hefele("HistoiredesConciles,"VI.,p. 430)thattherewasnoquestionofprecedence.Butthequestionasraised byFrancewasnotonemerelyofprecedence.TheFrenchdeniedtheright oftheEnglishtovoteasaseparate nation.Inthistheyweresupported bytheSpanishrepresentatives,who alsodeniedEnglandtherightofre. presentation,andwhoaccordinglyobjectedtotheirclaimingprecedence.The disputewascomposedforthetimebeingbytheGermansconcedingtheir place(thethird)toEngland,inorder topreventtheCouncilfrombreaking up. ThatIrelandwasnottransferredto England,norregardedastransferred, isprovedbythefollowingpassage takenfromthe"HistoryofEngland" byRapindeThoyra(Vol.VIII.,p. 183.DublinEd.,1729):-.TheambassadorsofEnglandarrivedinRomethe verydayofhiselection(May23, 1555t,butwerenotadmittedtoaudiencetillamonthafter.Thisdelay wasowingtotheQueenassumingthe
