ThuswroteFatherJulesAnicq,a Scheutmissionary,inDecember,1917, andinlessthanaweekheobeyedan emergencycallthatsenthimtocertaindeathintheplaguedistrict.
Frankandjoyousbynature,happiest whenhecouldmakeothershappy,he hasleftintheheartsofbothpriests andpeopleofMongoliaaplacethat willeverbehis.Hehadworkedamongthemsince1896.DuringtheBoxeroutbreakin1900hewasoneoften priestswho,withMonsignorBermijn, theirprovincial,defendedthefortified missionofSiao-kiao-panduringasiege offorty-twodays,whenbothboxers andregularsoldierswerealliedinan efforttocapturethemissionandmassacreallthemissionariesandChristians. AfterwardsFatherAnicqwassentto aprovincewheretheChristiansurvivorsofaterriblepersecutioncowered underanysheltertheycouldfind, homeless,destitute,leftwithouta priestanddazedbythecompletenessof theirmisery.
FatherAnicq,hailedastheirdeliverer,shoulderedthehugetaskofredeemingthewastedprovince.Byunwaveringcourage,byexertionsthatGod alonecanestimate,byheaven-taught patienceandspmpathy,hemadethis district.inthewordsofhisBishop, ''thejewelofthemissionofOrton." Hisefficiency,combinedwithperfect willingnesstoacceptanykin.1ofburden,madehimmuchindemandfordifficultandimportantassignments,but hisoneambitionduringallhiscareer wasthesalvationofsouls.Outofthis grewaspecialfondnessforthework oftheHolyChildhoodAssociation,in whichheevertookanactiveinterest.

AmessagefromNewYorkdated August27states:-Thrillingstonesof AmericanladsofIrishdescentcontinue tocomein.Reportsofthefamous fighting69th.Regimentshowevery manprovedafighter,fromthecolonel downtothelast"buck"private,and theKaiser'sownPrussianGuardgotits overwhelmingdefeatlargelyatthe handsoftheseboys. OneSundayinSeptember,twoyears ago,theIrishDivisionaddedanother chaptertothehistoryofIrishValour. FrancecanneverforgetGuillemontand Ginchy.ThebattleoftheSommehad enteredonitsthirdmonthwhenthe IrishDivisionwasmovedintothezone ofoperations.Theycame-theysaw -andforalltimetheyemblazonedon theircoloursthenamesofGuillemont andGinchy.Thesetwovillageswere keypositions.Onceinourhands,the wholeoftheGermansecondlineofdefencewasbroken.Knowingtheir value,theGermanshadmadetremendouspreparationsfortheirdefenceand thrdwntheirbesttroopsintoboth.But theIrishBrigadestookthemintheir stride. GuillemontfellonSunday,September3rd,toachargewhichwasoneof themostastonishingfeaturesofthe war.Thepipesplayingandthegreen flagflying,theIrishbattalionsswept onlikeahumanavalanche.Theyhad been"fedup"withthewearymonthof trenchfighting.Nowtheywerein theopen,thefightingeveryIrishman loves,andtheythirstedtogettoclose quarterswiththeenemy.Rightthrough the,rst,secondandthirdGermanlines oftrenchestheysweptwithanirresistiblerushtillthewholeofthevillage wasintheirhands.BySundaynight victorywasoverwhelmingandcom. plete. ForsixdaystheIrishBrigadesheld thecapturedground,lyinginshellholes,underconstantshell-fire,and withouthotfoodormuchwater.Then, ontheafternoonofSeptember9th, cametheorderfortheattackonGinchy.Amidawild"hurroosh"andthe criesof"Up,Dublins!""Up,Munsters!"and"Up,theRifles!"theysweptforward,pipesagainskirlingand thegreenflagwaving.Ineightminutesafterstartingtimetheyhadreachedtheirfirstobjectiveinthevillage, rightacrossthefirstGermantrenchesadistanceof600yards-whichisawonderfulrecord.Therightwaschecked foralittlebyanestofGermanmachineguns,butabrilliantlittleencirclingmovementdrovethegunnersout andthewholelineadvanced.Recklessofsnipersandmachine-guns,theIrishsweptthroughthevillage,searchingoutthe"Jerries"intheirconcrete dug-outsandtunnelledchambers.They wereBavarians,andfoughtsavagely, buttheIrishbayonetwastoomuch forthem.Theworkwasshort,sharp, anddecisive.Withintenminutesof reachingthecentreofthevillagethe Dublins,whowereinthevanoftheattack,hadgot200yardsbeyondthe northernside.
Buttherapidityoftheadvancewas notwithoutitsdrawbacks.Thetroops ontheirrightandlefthadnotbeen abletokeepupwiththem,andsothe IrishDivisionfoundthemselvesin Ginchy,withboththeirrightandleft flanksintheair,"asituationfullof disaster,accordingtomilitaryexperts. ButtheIrishBrigadereekednothing oftheirtheoreticalperil;theyweredeterminedtoholdwhattheyhadgot. andtheydidit. ItwasatthemomentwhenJoffrewas preparinghismanoeuvreoftheMarne. Anyway,raisingafewdivisionsfrom the4th.and5th.armies,andreinforcingthembytwodivisions,the42n6. and18th.,MarshalJoffreplacedthis forceundertheleadershipofFoch.It wasuponthismass,firstcalled"army detachment"andthenthe9th.army, thattheGermanoffensivebrokeafew dayslater.GeneralFochlikestorecall themodestbeginningsofthis9th. army:"Wewere,"hewouldsay,"poor parents.AGeneralStaffoffiveorsix officersgatheredinhastetostartwith, littleornoworkingmaterial,ournotebooksandafewmaps.Formypart, Isleptthefirstnightwiththeguard soldiersattheirpostinthevillage,to besurenottolosethenewGeneral Staff.Thuswasthe9tharmycreated. IrOhecentre,theMoroccanDivision washoldingfirmlyontheheightsof Mondement.The9th.corps,reinforcedbyareservedivision,stretchedout ontheright.Butthisarmycorpswas alreadybendingtokeepintouchwith the11th.corps,thrownbackbyacrushingattackoftheenemyasfarasthe Gouganconheights.Allthereserves wereengaged.Therightofthearmy 'hadonlybeenhaltedbythestrongest injunctionsofFoch,andallwasina stateofinsecureequilibrium,whichthe redoubledeffortsoftheenemythreatenedtodisturb.

Thismanoeuvrewasmorethandaring.ToanylessexaltedthanFoch,it appearedimpossible,sodifficultwasit inthemidstofsuchabattletowithdrawfromthecombatadivisionentirelyengaged,makeitcoveramarch backofthearmyfront,andexecutean attackwhosedecisioncouldbeforestalled,allinoneday.ButFochhad madethissimplebutdisconcerting reasoningatonce.

Itwas,therefore,amatterforFoch toraiseawallbeforeboththeseattacks,andtosmashthem.Thedecisivevictory,whichwouldbeobtain-
edlater,dependedonthis.Hisfirst actionwasthatofre-establishingaEasonwiththeBelgianarmy,andtoreinforceitsoastoprolongthefrontto thesea.Uponthestillemptyspace stretchingbetweenLysandthecoast, heformedafewstrongcentres,suchas YpresandDixmude:thenconnected thembyfillinginthespaceswiththe availableAnglo-Frenchtroops. Whilehewasimprovisingthisnew front,hesentaheadalltheavailable FrenchandBritishcavalrytoreconnoitreandchecktheenemy.FromOctober23toNovember12,thebattle raged.TheGermansconcentratedas manyas15armycorpsbetweenLys andthesea;butalltheirassaultsfailedbeforetheenergyoftheAllied troops.ThecommandsofFochat thisperiod,allwithoutexception,reflectthatsuperiorwillwhichgalvanisedthetroops: "Maintenirindiscutablementl'occupationdetelposition.""Arreter implacablementl'ennemisurtel front."

Butwithalltheseoddsandends, Foch,byaprodigyofenergy,had madeonesinglearmy,givingthemone singlespirit.TheKaiser'swillsupportedby15Germanarmycorps,carefullytrained,failedbeforethesuperior willofFoch,chiefofacoalisedarmy, organisedduringthebattle.Forthe secondtimeaftertheMarne,theAllies weresaved.
HavingplacedhisconfidenceinFoch during.theentirebattleofFlanders, MarshalJoffregavehimallthemeans whichhecouldraiseontherestofthe front.Whenthebattlewasended, ourreservesofammunitionwerealmost exhausted.
Anegativesuccess,Fochwouldsay withhisroughfrankness,butasuccess withoutwhichthevictoryoftheAllies wouldhavebeenimpossible,andthe verynextdayhesawthattheGerman offensiveuponthewesternfrontwas brokenformorethanayear.This wasthenecesarytimeforEnglandto formhernewarmies.TheFrencharmy fromtheMarnetoVerdunhasnever ceasedcoveringthepreparationsofthe coalition.Thisiswhyitspresentchief hasarighttorequireofothersthat theymakehaste.Thisiswhythis senseofthevalueof,timeissodeeply rootedinusall.

TheairisfullofPeace,Peace,Peace. Melbournehasbeenincarnivalsince eighto'clockonMondaynight,when the"Age"and"Argus"notifiedusthat thearmisticehadbeensigned.NewmanCollege,incommonwithevery otherCollege,house,hotel,andother building,wasemptiedonthespot,and theresidentswereinCollins-streeta fewminuteslater.Thecrowdwas enormous,butthemoststrikingthing aboutitwastheorderlinessofthesurgingmassofhumanity.Thatis,speakingcomparatively:Therewassinging.cheering,shouting;processions formedofanybodyandeverybody;and tin-canbandsformedofeveryconceivablekindoftinpeoplecouldgethold of.About10p.m.,however,thingsbe. gantogetlively.Tramcarswere liftedcleanofftherails,andrunabout theStreets.OnewassentforajoyrideonitsowndownLonsdale-streetthere'sagoodinclinethere,from SwanstontoElizabeth-streets.Theexperimentwaseminentlysuccessful,and wassoonfollowedinseveralother suitableplaces.Oneofthetrams, however,becameunruly,andrefusedto keeptotheroad.Leavingtheroadit tooktothepath,andtriedtotakeup itspositioninthewindowofanelectric appliancesshop.Quiteanumberof peoplegotcheapelectrickettlesout ofthisescapade. Oneofthemostamusingthings,however,wastherunningofoneofthecars downLittleBurke-street.Thenarrow nessofthisstreet,orratherlane,resultedinquiteanumberofbroken windows,especiallyintheChinese quarters."It'sanillwindblowsnobodyanygood,"andinatriceeverybodyseemedtobearmedtothehilt withcrackersandfireworksofalldescriptions.Anotherphaseofthecelebrationswasnowenteredon,and "bung-bungs"wereburstingandboomingeverywhere.Thepoorunfortunate mountedconstableshadatryingtime, forthecrowdimmediatelychosethem asthetargetforacontinuousattack. Thepranksdefydescriptionandenumeration.Oneofthefunniest.however,wasthesightofareturnedsoldier-wellstung,despitetheclosed hotels-whoswungaroundthestreets inuniformsfromfeettohead,butina strangeassortmentofmuftifromhead upwards.Hehaddiscardedhisown hat,appropriatedashinytop-hatfrom someunfortunate,butfoolish,gentleman,whoessayedtowearsuchheadgearonsuchoccasion,andaddedto thisbymisappropriatingthehatofa militarypoliceman,whowashavinga roughtime.Ifyoucouldhaveseen himwearingthistop-hat-itwasseveraltimestoolarge,ofcourse-and withamilitary-policehatbandofred andwhiteshowingupagainsttheshin. ingblack,ytuwouldhavescreamed withtherestofus. Tuesdaymorningwa,sevenlivelier thanMondaynight.Atonetimethey hadallthecable-carsoffthelinesand runingaboutSwanston-street.Collinsstreetcarswerewheeledalongto Bourke-street,andputontheselines, andthesamewithSwanston-streetand Elizabeth-streetcars.Eventuallythe TramwayBoardsuspendedtherunning. To-day,atnoon.some8.000to10,000 men,women,andchildrengatheredat St.Patrick'sCathedral,wheretheRosarywasrecitedforthefallensoldiers. AfterwardsSolemnBenedictionwasoffered,withtheArchbishoppresiding, fortheearlyrealisationofPeaceand allitstandsfor.ThanksgivingservicesarebeingheldalloverMelbourne. Bytheway,thatdreadfulperson,Worrell,heldone.yesterday,inhisown church,andagaindefiledthesanctuary withhisravingsabout"cowardlyecclesiasticswhostoppedmenfromgoingtothewar."The"Argus"reports his"TeDeum"thus:

Overandoveragaintheprincipleof self-determinationhasbeenproclaimed asoneoftheprimaryobjectsofthe war,andtheyoungmenofthiscountry aswellasofmanyothers,havegone forthandgiventheirlivesuncomplain. inglyforthatnobleideal.
Butinthemidstofourrejoicingthat thelittlenationsawayintheBalkans havebeenliberated,don'tletusforgetthatthereisalittlenationinour midstwhichforlongyearshasbeen cryingoutinvainforthefreedomwe aresowillingthatstrangersshouldenjoy.Nopeopleonthefaceofthisearth havehigherclaimtoself-determination thantheIrish.Theyhaveestablished itbyallthetests'owhichthepatriotismofanationcanbesubjected. Thestoryoftheirstruggleforliberty isoneofthemostnoble,tragicandinspiringchaptersinhumanhistory. Thenationalfeelingisnotstronglydevelopedinme.Ihavesocultivated thecosmopolitanhabitof.thoughtthat ithasbecomeaninstinctofmybeing.
ButifIwereoftheIrishraceIcould notthinkoftheirheroicdevotionto libertywithoutathrillofpride.Asit is,whatcanbemoreupliftingthanthe contemplationoftheirfidelitytothe nationalconsciousness-afidelitywhich haswithstoodthecruellestpersecutions,thebitterestsufferings,the blackesttreacheries?
Thetermsofpeaceenunciatedby PresidentWilson,andadoptedbyall theAllies,bringIreland,andIndia,too, withinthesphereoffreedom;andto discriminateagainstthem,anddeliberatelyexcludethemfromthebreaking ofshackles,wouldbeanactofshamefulrepudiation. ThecaseofIreland,however,stands byitself,andwhereverandwhenever therightsofsmallnationsarebeing decidedIreland'sclaimmustbegivena paramountplace.
AHomeRuleActhasbeencarried bytheBritishParliament,andbutfor theperfidyandcowardiceofBritish statesmenwouldbeinforceto-day.

Thatisanotherreasonwhythis country,andeveryotherself-governingcountrywithintheEmpire,should demandthefreedomofIreland,and insistthatitbegrantedforthwith.

ThedebatingteamsfromtheHibeiMansandYoungMen'sClubmeton Wednesdaynight,November20th,to discussthesubjectof"Prohibition," hutowingtothoseinattendancebeing desirousofparticipatinginthe"Rose Day"festivities,itwasunanimously decidedtoallowthequestiontoremain inabeyanceuntilJanuarynext,when hostilitieswillberenewed.
ThePresident(Mr.'Marmion)hasintimatedhisintentionofvisitingthe EasternStatesearlyinDecember,when hewillacquainthimselfwiththevenoussocietiesovertheborder.The committeedecidedtoforwardletters toeachStaterequestingeachexecutive torecogniseourgenialandzealouspresidentasadelegateinsearchofinfors tionsothatacomparisoncanbemade withthemethodsintheWest.

Hebecameunconsciousatonceand suffeednopain.Hewascarriedtoto thedressingstation,anddiedpeacefullyashorttimeafter.Hewasbrought toBoni,nearHazelbrook,Flanders, andwasburiedintheAustraliancemeteryamongsthisfellowcomrades.A Catholicpriestlaidhimtorest,blessed theprayersoftheChurch,whichin lifehesolovedandhonoured.When IcameIarrangedhisgraveanderectedthebeautifulcrosshiscomrades madeforhim.Ialsoplacedanother beautifulcross,madeofwhitebeads, onhisgrave.Lieut.Vowleswasdeep lylovedbytheofficers.Allstillspeak ofhimandmournhislossasacompanionandaleaderofmen.Hismenhad forhimthegreatestesteem,andwould followhimanywhere.Hewasasplendidman,endowedwiththefinestqualitiesofheartandmind.Hewasa braveandfearlesssoldier,aswasprovedbythegreathonourshewon.But aboveall,andbeyondall,hewasa gloriousCatholic.HisFaithwaslike aburninglightthatlituphissouland directedhiminallhedid.Hewas mostregularatConfessionandCommunion,and,moreover,hewasalways urginghisCatholicboystodothesame. Ifsomeofthemarewithhimin Heavento-daytheycanthankhimfor hiszealfortheirsouls.Youhave everyreasontobeproudofyourboy, whosohonouredhimselfandhis motherinlifeandindeath."

Forbrazeneffrontery,andinflated vanity,theleader-writerofthe"SundayTimes"takesfirstprize.HiseffusiontotheFrenchMissionlastSundaywaspainfullyridiculous.Well wasitcalculatedtomaketheunskilful laugh,andthejudiciousgrieve.The writerholdsupthisroughandundevelopedStatewithitshandfulofpioneersastheidealofAustralia,thevery bestthatthisSouthernHemispherehas toshowtotheworld.Oneofhis greatregretsisthatthroughthestupidityoftheEasternStatesConscription couldnotbeforceduponthepeople oftheWest.Andyet.everybody knowsthatthewarwaswonwithout Conscription.Ofcourse,weknowwell thattheenforcementofConscription wouldstrengthenthehand,andlengthenthesuitoftheclasswhichthe"Sun. dayTimes"deifies.Itwouldbreak thepoweroflabour,andwouldconsequentlyopposetheveryprinciples whichthatFrance,whichGeneralPau andCo.represents,letlooseuponthe worldonehundredandtwentyodd yearsago.The"SundayTimes"pines forcheaplabour.Itwouldprefersugar fromJavatosugarfromQueensland. Therearefourpropositionsworthy ofcontinualremembranceindiscussing therelationofCapitalandLabour.The firstisthis:Twosuchclasses,bywhatevernamewechoosetocallthem,must alwaysexist.Thecourseofthe world'sprogressder.nnstratesthatit hasalwaysbeenso.Norconsidering theinequalityofmen'sequipmentin mindandbodybyProvidence,could itbeotherwise.Thestateofmutual dependanceandhopeofprogressmakes itnecessary.EvenifsomeomnipotentGilbertwereabletomakeeffective hisfamousline"Theyallshallequal be,"theequalitywouldnotlongexist. THEONLYWAY.
Thefourthpropositionisthis:On Catholicprinciplesonlycansocial equilibriumbemaintained.Thesocialquestionandthecontroversies arisingoutofitconcerningthenature anddurationofwork,wages,workmen'sstrikes,isnotmerelyaneconomicone;"itisfirstofallmoraland religiousandforthatreasonitssolutionistobeexpectedmainlyfromthe morallawandthepronouncementsof religion."Theproblem,ashasbeen remarked,isoneofrightandwrong. ultimately.TheStatemaymakelaws tosafeguarditssubjects,itisboundto doitsshare;butinthelastresortthe remedyisintheconscientiousfulfilmentofindividualdutybythecitizens.TheCatholicChurchfearlessly andwithoutrespectofpersonspoints outthisdutyindetail;andaloneshe claimstopressitauthoritatively,to pressitonprinceandpeasant,high andlow,employerandemployee,capitalistandworkmanifyoupreferthe terms;andtopressitunderthreatof thesameeternalsanctions.Thought. lesspersonssometimessaytheChurch mustbeafraidofSocialismanditsefforts.Itisafraid-notthatSocial ismoranyotherismcantriumphover her;againstherthegatesofhellshall

Ayoungerbrother,Lieut.W.A. Keeley,waslastyeartransferredto theImperialArmyforserviceinIndia. beingchosenforhisnewdutiesfrom thewholeofthe3rd.Brigade.After undergoing12months'probationary service,hehasreceivedapermanent appointmentwiththerankofcaptain. Thisdeclarationhasbeenconcurred inbytheFrench,Italian,Serbian,and MontenegrianGovernments,anditis statedbyMr.NahumSokolow,the ZionistAmbassador-at-Large,thatin anaudiencewhichwasgraciouslyaccordedtohimbyPopeBenedictXV. inJune,1917,andatwhichtheformer explained,indetail,theobjectsofthe Zionist'movement,HisHolinessseveraltimesreiteratedhisthoroughaccordwiththeaimtoestablishaJewishNationalHomelandinPalestine.
