Butthereisyetathirdcategory,the categoryofthosewhomGodcallssuddenly,asitwere,insomesharpaccidentoftragicsurprise.Intheirstrength ofbodyandofmind,inallthevigour oftheirlustyyouth,inallthepromise ofambitiouslife,theyaresuddenly struckdownasSaulofTarsusonthe sun-smittenroadtoDamascus,utterly defenceless,nakedtowaitforGod'supliftedstroke.Ofsuchwasthesainted Ignatius,theheroofPampeluna. TheimpliedanalogybetweenthevocationoftheTarsustent-makerand thatoftheBasquesoldierisverysuggestive.Wemaybesurethatthe youthfulSaulhaddreamsandinterests differentfarfromhislaterlife'sreality. AJewtotheinnermostcore,Hebrew oftheHebrews,heitwaswhowas calledtobepre-eminentlytheApostle oftheGentiles.ThroughouthisApostoliclifehewastocountallthingselse butloss,yeaevenasdung,thathe mightgaintheloveofJesusChrist.. thatsameJesusChristwhooncestruck himtothegroundontheDamascus roadintheblazingSyriannoon.And Ignatius,too,wasfelledtotheearth inthemidstofhisdreamsandambitions.Andwhatafallwasthere! WhocouldguessthatthestrickensoldierofLoyolawasoneday'tocross swordswiththestiff-neckedGerman friar?Yetsoitwas.TheChurch's replytothechallengeofthatmovementknownastheProtestantReformationwasthelimping,haltingfigure ofIgnatiusofLoyola,thesoldiersaint. Laterheproceededtothephilosophical courseoftheUniversityofAlcala. TherestofthelifeofIgnatiusbelongstothehistoryofthedistinguishedOrderwhichhefounded,andwhich heruleduntilhisdeathonthemorning of31st.July,1556.ItwasaFriday, too,thatdaywhichespeciallyrecalls tousthesavingmemoriesofthat otherDeaththatoccurredonthedarkenedslopesofCalvary.Nodeath, bedscenewashis,nomourningthrong aroundhisbed,nofinalcounselsnor lastdirectionsforthegreatSocietyhe leftbehind.Asoneofhisbiographers saysofhim. TheaddressofhisLordshipthe BishopofSale(MostRev.Dr.Phelan!, inreplytotheattackontheChurch madebytheAnglicanBishopofGipps. land(Dr.Cranswick),causedwidespreadinterest,notonlyamongstCa. tholics,butalsoinnon-Catholiccircles.Dr.Phelan'sdeliverance,which wasreportedfullyinthelocalsecular papers,waseagerlyreadbyallsections ofthepeople,andhundredsofextra copieswereprinted.Oneenterprisingnewspaperfirmdidnotlosesightof thecommercialadvantagewhichoffered,andspecialplacardsweredistributeddrawingattentiontothecontents ofthepaperintheseterms:-
"CATHOLICINDIGNATIONMEETING.
"BishopPhelan'sAddress."
Theprincipaljournalsintheprovince ofGippslandcopiedtheaddress,and, altogether,thelatesteffortofDr.Phelanasacontroversialisthadthewidest possiblepublicity.Duringtheweek theBishopreceivedlettersandtelegramsfromallpartscongratulating himonhisaddress.Manyleading Protestantshaveexpressedtheopinion thattheattackofBishopCranswick wasmostunwarranted.Indeed,some gentlemenhavegonesofarastosay, afterreadingDr.Phelan'shistoricalreferencestotheAnglicanChurch,that thingswerenotwhattheyhadta:n ledtobelieve.AfterDr.Phelan'sut. terances,BishopCranswickwaswaited uponbyalocalpressmanandaskedif hehadanythingtosay,and,amongst afewshortrepliestothepressman's queries,madethisextraordinarystatement:"Iaddressedmyremarksonthe subjectofreuniontothechurchpeopleofthedioceseofGippsland,andnot tothepublic."AtSt.Mary'sCathedralDr.Phelandrewattentiontothe remarkquoted,and,inthecourseofa fineaddress,dealtwiththegenesisof theChurchofEngland.
TheBishop'sAddress. Dr.Phelansaid:TheCatholicsofSalemusthavefelt disappointedatthekindofanswer givenbyBishopCranwicktotheseriouschargesbroughtagainsthimat ourmeetingonSundaylast.Whenhis attentionwascalled,andcalledmost emphatically,tothegraveinsultwhich, withoutanyprovocation,heflungat theCatholicbodyingeneral,andthe IrishCatholicsinparticular,onemight expectareasonedreplyoradignified apology.But,inplaceofeither,we aretoldthatinaninterviewwitha pressrepresentativehesaid:"Iaddressedmyremarksonthesubjectof reuniontothechurchpeopleofthedioceseofGippsland.andnottothepublic.AsaChristian,Idonotdesireto enterintopersonalcontroversy.Asa gentleman,Icannotdescendtothelow levelreachedinlastSunday'smeeting."AChristiangentleman,asIunderstandtheterm,isonewhodoernot deliberatelymakefalsestatements,who wouldshudderatcalumnyandslander, whowouldnotunnecessarilywoundthe feelingsofthosewhodifferfromhim inreligionorpolitics,andwhowould hastenwithanapologyifhecommitted himselftoastatementnotfoundedon facts.AtSunday'smeetingIconvict. edDr.Cranswickofstatementswhich cannotbesupportedbyfacts,andthe electricatmospherecreatedbytheindignationoftheaudienceprovedhow deeplywoundedwerethefeelingsofthe Catholiccommunitybyhisgratuitous insults.Yettheonlyapologytenderedtousis:"Iaddressedmyremarks tothechurchpeopleofthediocese,and nottothepublic!"TheGermansare denouncedasHunsformurderonthe highseasbecausepassengerboats:re torpedoed.TheGermanreplyis:"If Ihadtowoundandkilltheinnocent theirfriendsshouldnotgrumble,forI intendedonlytopreventfoodandwar materialreachingEngland!"AndDr.
Cranswickfollowstheexampleofthe Hun.Hewishestoconveytohisown peopleamessageladenwithcalumny againsttheCatholicChurch;heexhaustseverypublicatiOnathiscommandtowoundourfeelings;andin launchinghistorpedohepoisonsthat weaponwithsuchvulgarphrasesas "'priest-ridden"peopleunderthe "thraldom"oftheVatican.Andthen hewondersthatthisunprovokedinsult,clothedinundignifiedlanguage, shouldhurtusbecauseitwasintended onlyforhisownpeople!Dr.Cranswickhasagreatdealtolearnifhe considerstheCatholicbodysuchapack offoolsastoacceptreasoningtooridiculousforschoolboys.

Whenspeaking.lastSundayonthe insuperablebarrierseparatingtheCatholicfrom(heProtestantreligion,sufficientemphasiswasnotlaidonthe ChristianPriesthood,withitsaccompanyingsacrifice.TheProtestantReformationhasdonenothingmoresignalin itscorruptionofthe"faithoncedeliveredtothesaints"thanitseffacementofthecentralideaofreligion-the adorationofGodbymeansofsacrifice.Thisisnotamereerrorabout somedetailindoctrine;itisonethat hasutterlyabolishedthatspecialand exclusivemodeofacknowledgingthe supremesovereigntyofGod.This manifestationofourdependenceonthe Creatorcannotbegiventoanycreature,howeverexalted,andwasenjoinedbyGodHimselffromthebeginning oftheworldasanecessaryandfundamentalpartoftheworshipduetoHim. Athousandyearsbeforethecomingof OurRedeemertheRoyalProphetforetoldofHimthathewasconstituteda Priestforeveraccordingtotheorder ofMelchisedech;thatis,Hewasto offersacrificeundertheappearanceof breadandwine,asdidthattypical PriestoftheMostHighwhenhemet Abrahamreturningfrombattle.There canbenosacrificewithoutapriest; andtheessentialdutyofapriestisto offersacrifice.TheHolyGhosthas inspiredSt.Paul,inhisEpistletothe Hebrews.tostatethistruth:"For everyhighpriesttakenfromamong menisordainedformeninthethings thatappertaintoGod,thathemayofferupgiftsandsacrificeforsins.At theLastSupperOurBlessedLord,exercisingHisofficeas''priestaccording totheorderofMelchisedech,"offered HimselftotheEternalFatherunder theappearanceofbreadandwine.But, then,anotherprophecyhadtofindfulfilment.Sixhundredyearsbeforethe LastSupper,Malachywasinspiredto saythatGodhadrejectedtheJewish formofsacrifice,whichwastobereplacedbyanother-"Fromtherisingof thesuneventothegoingdown,my nameisgreatamongtheGentiles,and ineveryplacethereissacrifice,and thereisofferedinmynameaclean oblation."Inorderthatthis"clean oblation"mightbeofferedtoGodin alltimesandplaces,OurDivineLord, inthewords,"Dothisforacommemorationofme,"clothedtheApostles withHisownPriesthood,withauthority transferthatgifttotheirsuccessors ProtestantismMadeinGermany.
SuchwasthegiftwhichRomesent toEnglandinthesixthcentury,when PopeSt.GregorytheGreatsentSt. AugustinetokindlethelightofDivine FaithamongtheAngles.Thatgift Englandcherishedfornighathousand years.ThenthelustfulHenryVIII. threwofftheallegianceofRomethat hemightbeuntrammelledinhiscareerofsin;andunderhisson,Edward, ProtestantismwasimportedfromGermany,andisEngland'snationalreligionsince.Thisarticle,Protestantism,manufacturedinGermany,differs essentiallyfromtheFaithcarriedto EnglandfromRome.Andthatessen-
tialdifferenceis,theEstablishmenthas neitherpriesthoodnorsacrifice,while theCatholicChurchhas.TheHuns ofthesixteenthcenturytookgood carethat,inthematterofreligion,God wouldbedeniedthesupremeworship ofsacrifice,andthepeopledeniedthe benefitsoftheSacraments.Hence, theycutfromtheRomanPontificalthe wordsconferringtheessentialpower ofthepriesthood;theypulleddown ensaltar,rifledthetabernacle,castoff theHolySacrifice,anddeniedtheReal Presence.And,tomakethisannihila. tioncomplete,everyBritishsovereign, fromQueenAnnetoEdwardVII.,had, onthedayofcoronation,toswearthat heisaProtestant,andthattheHoly SacrificeoftheMassis"superstitious andidolatrous."Now,thecravingof alargesectionoftheAnglicans,both inEnglandandAustralia,fortheSacrificeoftheMassismademanifestby theintroductionsoftheRomanRitual intomanyProtestantchurches.An EnglishProtestantstatesman,the RightHon.AugustineBirrell,ina thoughtfulandwell-reasonedarticlein the"NineteenthCentury,"beautifully expressesthiscraving:-"TheEnglish. ChurchbeforetheReformationcelebratedMassinthesamefashionasit iscelebratedto-dayinNotreDame, Paris.HastheEnglish,asaChurch, continuedtocelebrateMass,afterthe samefashion,andwiththesameintentionasbefore?....Nobodynowadays, saveahandfulofvulgarfanatics, speaksirreverentlyoftheMass.If theIncarnationbeindeedtheonedivineeventtowhichthewholecreation moves,theAltarmaywellseemits restfulshadow....ItisdoubtfulwhetheranypoorsinfulchildofAdam (notbeingapaidagentoftheProtestantAlliance)everwitnessed,howeverignorantly,thecommonserviceac. cordingtotheCatholicritualwithout emotion.

"ItistheMassthatmakesthedifference,sohardtodefine,sosubtleis it,yetsoperceptible,betweenaCatholiccommunityandaProtestantone, betweenDublinandEdinburgh.Here Ibelieveisoneofthebattlefieldsof thefuture.InsomechurchesofEnglishobedience,therepurportstobea visiblesacrifice;inotherchurchesof thesameostensiblecommunion,no suchprofessionsofmysteryormiracle ismade.Anditisimpossibletobelievethatamysterysotremendous,so profoundlyattractive,sointimatelyassociatedwiththekeystoneofChristianfaith,sovouchedforbythetestimonyofsaintlymen,beallowedtore mainforanotherhundredyearsan openquestioninachurchwhichstill assertsitselftobetheguardianofthe Faith."
ItwouldbedifficultforaCatholic theologiantoimproveonthatbeautifulexpositionofthePriesthoodand theSacrificeoftheMassastheline dividingtheCatholicFaith.Clergy. menwhohavenotreceivedtheSacramentofOrdersmaygothroughasham Mass;butaftertheconsecrationbread andwineisonthealtar,asitisonthe familytableaftertheheadofthehouse hasinvokedonthemealtheblessing ofGod.ThelateCardinalManning tellsatouchingincidentwhichhelped tobringthistruthhometohim.As ArchdeaconofChichester,hewasvisitingthesickinapublichospital,when anIrishfarmlabourerwascarriedto thewardinadyingcondition,and prayingtotheVirginMarynottolet himdiewithoutapriest.Thegood Archdeacon,movedtotearsbythesuf. feringofthisman,offeredhisspiritual servicestopreparehimfordeath.But thedyingmanthankedhimforthe kindoffer,saying:"Ibelongtotheold, faith;youareonlyaProtestantminister;forGod'ssakegetmeatrue priest."Manninghastenedthrough thecitytillhefoundaCatholicpriest, whoadministeredtheLastSacraments totheIrishman,Arrivingathisstudy, Manningsankintoachair,andfor hoursponderedoverthewordsofthis simpleIrishpeasant,"Youareno priest;youareonlyaProtestantminister."Threemonthslater,Manning wasreceivedintotheChurch,andbe-

Ifpurpleandgoldandprecious stones,crownsandsceptresanda throne,withafawningnationtorule, madeakingthenGeorgeIIIwasa king.Athoughtfulpersonmightvery naturallyaskwhataboutthosegreat virtuesthatsoadmirablybecome kings,viz,generosity,liberality,magnanimity,justice,andmercy.Well, thefactisthatthefirsttwowereas foreigntotheIIIGeorgeassoapisto atramp.Hewasconstructedonthe principleofthenarrowgauge.With thekeeneyeofamiserhesawthat theAmericanColoniesbelongedtohim; buthecouldnotseethattheybelongedtothepeopletoo;whathesawwas luminousandhiswaywasplain;what hedidnotapprehendwasdark,butthis wasthatwhichcontainedthemost pentupenergyandconsequentlythe mostdangerforhim.Howdifferent wouldthingsbeifhehadseenwith theexpandedvisionofagenerousand nobleruler.Narrownessmadeyour kingdomnarrow,George.ThisremindsmeofRoboam,whoalsomade hiskingdomverynarrow. Welovefreedom,welovedemocracy, welovejustice,andaswelovethem, wealsoloveIreland,thelandfrom whichforsixhundredyearsthese thingshavebeenconspicuousbytheir absence.Onethingwehavereason tocongratulateourselvesuponisthat wealwayskeptourheadscool.The perfervidandflatulentebullitionsof jingoismneverturnedahaironour heads.Consciousthatwehaddone ourduty,anddoneit,whenthethanks wastheblackguardismofpettytyrants andsoolers,wewereindifferenttothe abuseofourcritics.Alltheirhollow talkhasfallenflat.Theyhadwealth andpower,andafalseGovernmentat theirbacks.Theyhadacensorship whichclosedtheeyestotheirdoings, everythingtheyfavouredwasdefeated, andthecauseswhichweexpousedalwayswon.WehavebeenloyalascitizensofAustralia,'andwillalwaysremainso.AstoIreland,fromhersacredsoilwesprung,weshalleverremainloyaltohernomatterthecost, andanyonewhobelievesintheideaof nationalitymustadmitthattheman whoisnottruetohisbirth-landcannotbetrustedinhisloyaltytoany other.Wehaveeveryconfidencethat intheadjustmentofthenationsIrelandisnottobeforgotten.IfBelgium,orAlsace,orPoland,hasrights, Irelandhasherstoo;andtosayshe hasnotistherankesthypocrisy.The Mr.Barnes,theVictorianMinisterforIgreatestvictoryEnglandcanachieveis Railways,explainedafewnightsago,totriumphoverherself.AsthepeoattheinvitationofMr.Livingstone,'pieofGermanyhavetriumphedoverthe M.LA.,whyitwasthatwhiletheRail.militarists,so,too,thevoiteofthe wayCommissionerspermittedonlysix citizensrepresentingtheR.S.W.H. Leaguetohaveaccesstotheplatform oftheTraralgonrailwaystationonthe occasionofthevisitofSirArthurStanley,thewholetownwasallowedtogo ontheplatformofthesamestationon theoccasionofthepassingthroughof thePapalDelegate,Mgr.Cattaneo.Mr. Barnesexplainedsatisfactorily,and whileallfair-mindedpeopleagreethat thesourpeoplewhoinspiredthequestionaskedintheLegislativeAssembly,hadarighttoananswer,allbroadmindedpeoplewillwishthemjoyof theanswer.
Thepeopleandparsonsinterestedin thethanklesstaskofProtestantising theStateschoolsofVictoria,latelypreparedapetition400yardslong,signed byavery,verylargenumberofSundayschoolladiesandwire-whiskered gentlemen.Thepetitionyelled"to thetinglingstars,"andtothePremier ofVictoria,totakeuptheworkin whichtheProtestantchurchesofVictoriahavefailed,andcompelState schoolteachers.Atheists,Jews,'andCatholics,alongwiththerest,toteach theProtestantreligions,whichthe churchesarenotabletokeepasgoing concerns.ThePremierwouldn'tbite. andthat400yardsofpaperaregone fornothing,and"atatimelikethis."
TheBritishEmpireentersuponthis fray,buttressedbytheprinciplesof justiceandmorality,and,assubjects oftheEmpire,weCatholicsshouldferventlypraythattheGodoftheright. eousbringthearmsofEnglandtoa speedyandtriumphantvictory.
TheCatholicChurchowesnothingto theGermanGovernment.Forcenturiesitsoughttocrushandcripple herbyitsinsidiouslegislation.But, likeotherProtagonistsofCaesarism,It wasup'againstGod,andtheIronChancellor,thecentralfigureofthepersecution,diedbaffledinhisfruitlesstactics, andto-daytheCatholicChurchstands inGermanyatriumphanttestimonyto theimpotencyoftyrannicalGovernmentstodestroythatwhichissupportedbytheFingeroftheMostHigh.
GERMANTAXATION.
Germanyistheprimefactorinthis outburst,andifshesinkscrushedand crippledbeneaththeserriedtrampof unitednations,shedeservesevenmore thanshesuffers.Herdemandforwar isbutapretexttocovertherobbery ofover-taxationwithwhichshehas burdenedherpeople.Itmaybewell tosing"TheWatchontheRhine,"but tosingittothejinglingaccompanimentofextortedgoldandsilveris quiteadifferentmatter.

TheKaiserhasundoubtedlyforcedthis warupontheworld.HeistheNapoleonofthetwentietycentury,minus theflashinggeniusandthemagnetic personalityofthe"littleCorporal."It ismorethanevidentthatviewingthe fortuitouscomplexionofContinental affairs,themodernmanoffatefeltthat thehourofdestinyhadcome.Buthe reckonedwithouthishost.Andit shouldbeoursolemnprayerthatthe Godofbattlesmaynervethearmsof thealliesincrushingandhumblingthe arrogantsonsoftheFatherland.The GermanCabinethasproveditselfas treacherousanddeceitfulasanaboriginalcliquedevoidoftherudimentsof Christiancivilisation.Whilewiththeir lipstheyprofessedpeacewiththemselvesandwiththeworld,deepintheir heartsthererankledatreacherousambitiontospringpanther-likeandtug atthethroatoftheBritishbull-dog. Noambitionedopportunityhasarrived,andtheKaiserfindsthatheis upagainstthearmsofthenations.The problemsofthehighcostofliving,and thegrowthofpopulation,andtheabsenceofanoutletforthispopulation, coupledwiththemaddreamofdictatingtotheworldurgedtheKaiseron, andnowhemustfinditnoeasytask to"shoottherapidsThesourerthis Germanautocratfails,thebetterfor thenations;ifaproudradim2erious fanatichassethimselfto to-amusehumanity,itisonlyrczsonab,'thathe shouldpaythepenaltyu,..ismadfolly.
Wheneverthequestionofself-governmentforIrelandbecomesacutein thepoliticsofEnglandthereisinevitablyaneffortmadebyopponentsof HomeRuletoshowthatsomething betterthanself-governmentshouldbe evolvedasasolutionoftheproblem. Yetthosewhoputforwardanysolu tionotherthantherestorationtoIre-. landofherrighttogovernherselfare merelyploughingthesandsorbeating theair;theyarenotmeeting,they areignoring,thecharacteroftheclaims pressedbytheIrishpeople.Ofthe suggestedsolutionbyamethodoffederalismamongtheconstituentelements thatformthenucleusoftheEmpire, theEnglish,Scots,Welsh,andIrish peoples,itmayatoncebesaidthat itwillnotwork,ifonlybecauseitcan hardlybemadetosatisfyEnglandor Ireland.Asthe"Guardian,"nofriend ofIrishHomeRule,says,"Suchastate ofthingswouldnotmakeforharmony amongthesisternationalities,andit mightwreckaConstitutionwhich,in spiteofdefects,remainsthefinestin theworld.Thatitwouldsatisfy eitherOrangemenorSinnFeinersthere isnotanatomofproof."Thereis everyreasontobelievethatfederation isoutsidetheprobabilitiesofthe future.Irelandisanationinhope andmeanstobeoneinfact.Ifthis berecognised,thenthedaydawnsfor completereconciliation.Ireland'squarrelisnotwiththeEnglishCrownor theEnglishpeople,butwiththegoverningclasseswhopersistintheirefforttocrushdownIrishCatholicsun. deraProtestantascendancyinUlster. Widespreadandgenuineregretwas expressedonMonday,whenitwas learnedthatMrs.AlicaHoulahan,wife ofMr.T.Houlahan,InspectorofPolice,haddiedatherresidenceonSupdayevening,afteralengthyillness.The lateMrs.Houlahanwasthedaughterof Mr.andMrs.JohnKelly,andwasborn inPerthsome:54yearsago.Her fatherwasoneofthefirstmilitarypensionersinWesternAustralia.Thedeceasedlady,withherparents,left Perthatanearlyage,andresidedfora longperiodinGeraldton,whereher manygoodqualitiesgatheredaround heralargecircleoffriends.Inthe year1887shemarriedMr.T.Houlahan, andfor31yearstheyenjoyedanenviablemarriedlife.TheInspector'sdutiesnecessitatingfrequentchanges, theyatvarioustimesresidedinFremantle,theVasse,Kalgoorlie,and othercentres,ultimatelycomingfrom Broometotakeuptheirresidencein Northamupwardsoffouryearsago. Forovertwelvemonthsthedeceased ladyhasbeenconfinedtoherhomeby herillness,anddespitethebestmedical attentionshefinallysuccumbedafter herlongillnessbornewithChristian resignation.Thefuneraltookplaceon Mondayafternoonandwasverylargely attended.Thecortegeproceededfrom thedeceasedlady'slateresidencetoSt. Joseph'sChurch,wherethefirstportion oftheburialservicewasconductedby theRev.FatherO'Donnell,whopaid aneloquenttributetothememoryof thedeceasedlady.Duringthewhole ofherlifeshehadbeenanactiveand earnestmemberoftheChurch,andher lifehadbeenalivingexampleofwhat atrueCatholicshouldbe.Tothebereavedhusbandthereverendgentlemanconveyedthecondolenceofallthe membersoftheChurch,andtrusted thatwhenthosepresentcametodepartfromthislifetheywouldbeas wellpreparedastheonewhomthey weremourningthatday.Attheconclusionthesadprocessionreformedand proceededtotheCatholicportionof theNorthamCemetery,wheretheremainswereinterred,theRev.Father O'Donnellofficiatingattnegraveside. ThechiefmournerswereMr.T.Houlahan(husband),andMrs.Critch(sister),Mrs.Blythe(sister-in-law),and MissMartin(niece).Thepall-bearers wereMessrs.T.McInerney,G.Easton, J.Teahan,J.Kenny,P.Foley,andW. Duggan.Numeropswreathsandfloral tributeswereforwarded,whilsttelegramsandlettersofsympathywerereceivedfromallpartsoftheStateR.I.P. OnThursday,31st.October,Father O'Donnellreceivedawirefromthe militaryauthoritiesstatingthatPrivateEustaceDowney,C.Company, 28thBattalion,hadbeenkilledinactiononthewesternfront.Thedeceasedyoungsoldierwastheeldestson ofMr.andMrs.M.Downey,Buriongroad,Northam,andreceivedhiseducationfromtheSistersofSt.Joseph,Northam.PrivateDowneyenlistedin 1916,andhad'beenpreviouslywounded.Anotherbrother,PrivateWil.iam Downey,hasalsobeenseriouslywounded,havinglostoneleg,anuISat.presentconvalescinginhospitalinEngland.ARequiemMasswascelebratedatSt.Joseph'sChurchbybattier O'DonnellonNovember5th,atwinch theparentsandrelativesofthe&etas edattended.Thesympathyof tholicsofthedistrictisextendedtoMs brothers,sistersandsorrowingparents.

Thegrandannualentertainmentby thepupilsofSt.Joseph'sConvent School.Fremantle,waspresentedunder themostfavouralaleauspicesinthe King'sTheatre,Fremantle,onTuesday evening.Thevastauditoriumwasfilledtooverflowingbyanadmiring throngfromsympathywiththewondrouslaboursoftheSistersofSt. JosephinthecauseofCatholiceducation,andtomarktheirwarmappreciationoftherareexcellenceoftheconcertprogramme.Inconsonancewith themarchofevents,theflagsofthe Allieswereflownfromeverypointof vantage,whilethedawnofanewand brighteretaabouttobreakuponthe worldthroughthevictoryoftheAllied armsaddedimmenselytotheenthusiasmofthepassinghour.HisWorship theMayor(Mr.W.E.Wray), theMayoress,theOblateFathers, metropolitanclergy,andtheChristianBrotherswereconspicuous amongthegathering.Duringthe interval,Mr.Wraytookoccasionto publiclythanktheSistersfortheir greatworkforeducationinWestern Australia.Hedweltwithenthusiasm uponthedefeatoftheCentralPowers, andthetriumphofjusticeandliberty forthecivilisedracesofmankind.

MilliganGirlswereindeeddecidedly quaintanddroll,whileMissMilligan, thedemuredame,whopresiedoverthe academywithherhandmirror,powderbox,andextraordinaryeccentricities,wasafundofmerrimentevento thecloseoftheperformance.Junior girlswereasadreamoftheOrientin theiractionsong,"JapaneseUmbrella." Theirflowingrobescombinedwithsunshadesofeveryhueproducedagorgeouseffect,whichisbetterimagined thandescribed,whiletheirgracious posebeforebowingadieuwasreceived withloudapplause.Partsongs,"Sea Gulls"and"TheWindandtheHarp," likethevocalnumbersthatpreceded them,wererenderedwiththatpurity oftoneandraresweetnessofexpressionassociatedwithcarefultraining, andwereeminentlyworthyofAustralia-thelandofsong.Thesingingof theNationalAnthemannouncedthe conclusionofasplendidentertainment. LetusfirstrecallthefactthatinseveraldryStatesofAmericatheProhi. bitionlawshavebeenalreadymadean instrumentofreligiousperescution,and thattheprocuringofaltarwinefor Masshasforsometimebeenaserious question.Severallawcaseshavetale enplaceinOklahamaalready,andit issatisfactorytonotethatatlengthin thatparticularStatealavourablejudgmenthasbeenobtained.Butinall casessuchajudgmentwilldepend largelyonthepersonalopinionofthe judges,andtherewillalwaysbeadangerthatprejudicedjudgesmayinsist thattheProhibitionlawsdonotallow evenaltarwinetobeintroduced.But eventheuseoffermentedwineforreligiouspurposesmaybeforbidden.And nomatterwhatpreliminarypromises wemayget,unlesssuchanintention wasclearlyexcludedbylaw,there wouldbeabsolutelynosafeguardfor CatholicsifProhibitionwerecarried here.Indeed,wemaybeperfectly surethattheNo-Poperypartywould leavenostoneunturnedtomakeaProhibitionlawaweaponofattackagainst Catholics,andthatweshouldhaveincessanteffortsmadetopreventthe celebrationofHolyMassasChristordainedit.Havingsaidsomuchby wayofwarning,letusconsiderthe matterasaspeculativequestioninthe lightoftheology,layingasideourprejudicesfororagainstit,andtryingto seeitinitstruebearings. Temperanceisavirtue,andlike everyvirtueconsistsinthemeanbetweentwoextremes.Temperancead., vocatesoughttoimitatethevirtueand maintainthemeanalso.Unfortunatelytheydonotalwaysdoso,andby theirfanaticismtheyinjureagood causebyarousingtheoppositionofreasonablemenwhowillneverbedriven byfanatics.Thereforewhenadvocatesoftemperancetellusthatalcohol isinitselfanevilthingtheyarenot onlymakingastatementinopposition tofacts,buttheyareadvocatingadoctrinewhichnoCatholicisallowedto hold.FatherBridgett,thegreatEnglishtemperanceworker,statedthe truthwhenhesaid,"Drinkisthework ofGod;drunkennessistheworkof man."Therewasperhapsneverin anycountryamanwhohadthecause oftemperancesomuchatheartasCardinalManning,whoinanaddressin 1872said,Irepeatdistinctlythatany manwhoshouldsaythattheuseof wineoranyotherlikethingissinful whenitdoesnotleadtodrunkenness, thatmanisahereticcondemnedbythe CatholicChurch.WiththatmanI willnotwork."Drinkinitselfisnot evil;andtosaythatitisistheheresy ofManichaeus.TheChurchcondemns theabuseofdrink;butsheisever mindfuloftheoldmaximthatabuse doesnotpreventuse.Hence,what theChurchendorsesisnotacampaign againstalcoholasanevilthing,buta campaignagainstitsabuse.Nolittle harmhasbeendonebymisguidedCatholicswhosefeelingscarriedthem awayinthismatterandmovedthemto becomeextremists.Nomatterwho theyare,nomatterwhatpositionsthey hold,theymustrememberthatthey arenotspeakingfortheChurchwhen theyadvocatetotalProhibition,andby sodoingtheyputapowerfulweapon intothehandsofthosewhoare,as CardinalManningsaid,hereticsintheir holdingthatalcoholiswrongandevil initself.Thatprincipleisfalse;and nomatterwhatprivatereasonsone mayhave,nomatterwhatpublicreasons,betheyeversograve,exist,the Churchcannotstandforafalseprinciple.Therefore,whateverarguments aCatholicmightbetemptedtoput forwardinfavourofProhibitionhecan never,asaCatholic,holdtheextreme viewthatdrinkisanevilinitself. Therearegoodpoints-andmanyof them-onwhichhemayinsistlawfully. Andmanywhohavesufferedmuchwill betemptedtoinsistonsuch.But letitneveroeforgottenthatbysodoingtheymaybeforgingaletterfor theirChurch.

Hisknowledgeoftheoneweak straininHughonlymadehimthe moredetermined.Whatwasatfirst merelyintendedtosatisfyhislovefor childrennowpresenteditselfinthe lightofapositiveduty.Felixhad oncehearditsaidthatchildreninheritedthemoralaswellasthephysical traitsoftheirparents.
Butheresolutelyrefusedtoaccept anysuchtheory.Hefoundoutby patientinvestigationthatphysicians generallydiscardedtheideaofchildren inheritingthephysicalillsoftheirparents,butadmittedthattheymightinheritthetendencytosuchills.
ThisgaveFelixanopportunityofimpressingtheimportanceofhonestyon hisson.

Felixwasdressingonemorning,when asilverdollarrolledoutofhispocket andlayonthefloornearthefootof thebed.Hestoopedtopickupthe money,whensuddenlyanideaflashed acrosshismind,andheleftthecoin staywhereithadrolled.Heknew Hughwouldbethefirstoneinthe roomafterheleft.Indeed,theboy hadvoluntarilyundertakenthetaskof tidyinguptheroomeachmorning,-for whichFelixallowedhimasmall amountofspendingmoneyeachweek. Itseemedcrueltothrowtemptation inHugh'spath,andFelixhesitated tomaketheexperimentatfirst,buthe finallydecidedthatthiswasacase wheretheendjustifiedthemeans. Hespentarestlessdayathisdear. Similarlyhebelievedthattheycould inheritthetendencytomoralweakness.Sothegoodfellow,withallof theforceathiscommand,resolvedto stampoutthistendencyinHugh,just asamanmightstampoutafewsmolderingsparkswhichthreatenedtoblaze forthintoaconsumingfire.
Hestarteditontheworkofcharacterbuildingwithadoggedpersistence whichsomemengivetomoneymaking.AllofhissparehoursweredevotedtothecompanyofHugh,andin timetheycametobemorelikebrothersthanfatherandson.
OnSundayafternoonstheytooklong ramblesthroughthewoods,andon suchoccasionsFelixinclucatedhis ideasoflifeandmoralityintothe youngmind,andhediditwithoutthe appearanceoflecturingorpreaching. Hefullyrealisedthattheyoungrequiredrecreationandamusement,but hewascarefultoseethatthesethings werelawful.
Theeveningmealwasalwaysagreat eventforthetwo,Itwasatsuch timesthattheydiscussedtheaffairsof theday,eachtellingofthelittlehappeningswitharelishwhichcomesto thosewhoaresincerelydevotedtoone another.

Thestrainwasbeginningtotellon FelixCarrigan.Betweenhislovefor Hughandhisdetestationofdishonesty, hewassufferingthetorturesofthe condemned.
Atthisstageofhiscontemplation thesweatactuallystoodoutonhis brow.Hesincerelyregrettedhaving madethetest.Whyhadhenotleft wellenoughalone?Buthedismissed thisnotionascowardlyandevasive.It wasbesttofacethefacts.Itwas bettertoknowtheworst-iftherewere aworst-atonce.Thentheworkof thefuturecouldbeguidedaccordingly. Anyhow,hewishedthedaywould cometoanend,sothathemightknow onethingoranother.Atonetimehe feltlikeamanwaitingfortheverdict ofthejury,atanotherheseemedto beinthedockawaitingsentence.It wasamazingthatthepossibilityofa singleactonthepartofthisboy.who wasnotofhisfleshandblood,should affecthimwithsuchintensity.
Herealisedthenjusthowheloved Hugh:howthecurlyheadedboywho hadtwinedhistinyfingersabouthis neckattheorphanasylumhadnow becomeapartofeverybreathhe breathedandofeverybeatofhisheart.
Itwasnothing.Itwastrash,but thefactthatyouwerehonest,thatyou werenottemptedtokeepit,wasto memorethanallthejewelsthatwere everdugoutoftheearth, HughstaredatFelixwithwide-open eyes."Itwastheonlythingtodo,"hesaid, "buthowcouldIhelpbeinghonestyoutaguhtmethat-youmademe whatIam."

Atthecloseofdayhedreadedtogo home.Thethoughtthatthisboy mightblasthismostcherishedhopes wasner-eracking.Buttheordealhad tobefaced,andhemovedtowardthe familiarplacewithaprayeronhis lips.
Thelandlady,withwhomtheman andboylodged,greetedhimcheerfully andhescarcelyknewhowhereturned thesalutation.Hughwaswaitingfor hintwiththeeagerexpectancyof youth,andinafewminutestheywere seatedatthetable,facingoneanother. "Yes,"exclaimedHugh,notnoticing theemotionoftheotherone."It mademerichforaminute,butthenI remembereditbelongedtoyou,andI becamepooragain."
Helaughedattherecollection,and movedinthedirectionofthebedroom withFelixathisheels.Thenext momenthehadthedraweropen,and thefathersawthedollarlyinginthe bottomofthetinbox. Hecouldrestrainhimselfnolonger. Aqueerobstructionhadriseninhis throat,andthetearsmadehissight moremistythanever.Hethrewhis armsaroundHugh'sneck.
"Myboy,"heexclaimed,"youhave mademeveryhappy."
Hughlookedathiminsurprise.The demonstrationseemedoutofproportion totheamountinvolved.
