TheSpanishwordforfatherispadre. TheSpaniardcalledhispriestaswe do-hisfather.Sothepriestsofthe Missionswerethepadres.Theoutsider,whenhecame,knowingnodistinctionbetweenpriestandBrother, andmakingnone,calledallthereligi. ousconnectedwiththeMissionsthe padres.
Sowewhoknowthestoryofthe Missionswellunderstandthatwhen anyonereferstothepadresofour Statehereferstothereligiousofthe Missions,thesaintlysonsofSaint Francis,whobuiltthegreatFranciscan establishmentoftheMissionsofAlta (Upper)CaliforniaofSpanishandMexicandays,laterknownasjustplain California.
perostartedoverlandforSanDiego, foundingothermissionsontheway. ByagreementbetweentheFranciscansandtheDominicans,enteredinto inMexicoCityonApril7,1772,the FranciscanssurrenderedtotheDomin jeansthemissionsofLowerCalifornia, andbythesameagreementtheFranciscansoftheCollegeofSanFernando agreedto"maintaintheestablishments theyoccupyfromsaidportofSan Diegofollowingtheroadtheyholdto Monterey,theportofSanFrancisco, andfartherbeyond."
Fromtheearliestdays,inalltheir enterprisesofdiscoverytheSpanish peoplesawtoitthatthecrossiccompaniedtheflagandthepriestattended themariner.Nodiscoveryofaland wasevermadeandacceptedbythem withoutmakingathanksgivingoffering toGod;andthisofferingwasinvariablyfollowedbythededicationofthediscoverytoHisholyservice. Permanentfoundationswerethen made,andpriestsinnumberscameto promotetheworshipofGod.'The churchandtheschoolwerebuilt,and theworkofreligionandcivilisation wascommencedandcarriedonamong thenativesofthediscoveredland: Onnearlyeveryvoyageofdiscovery toCaliforniatheSpaniardswereaccompaniedbyFranciscanfriars.On Vizcaino'ssecondvoyagehehadwith himthreebarefootedfriarsoftheCarmeliteOrder.ByroyaldecreeofDecember26,1679,thefirstpermanent settlementinLowerCaliforniaandits futuremissionswereentrustedtothe SocietyofJesus.
OnFebruary5,1697,aroyallicense wasgrantedtotheJesuitstofound missionsalloverthepeninsula.These weretobeunderthesupervisionof FatherJuanMariaSalvatierra,S.J., andFatherEusebioFranciscoKino, S.J.
In1766theJesuitstriedtosurrender themissionsinCalifornia,buttheviceroy,DeCroix,refusedtheirrequestso todo.Ontheissuanceofthedecree ofCarlosIII.ofSpain,onJune24, 1767,expellingtheSocietyofJesus fromhisdominions,theJesuitsinCalifornia(Lower)preparedtoleave. Thehistoriansaysthat"onFebruary3,1768,fiftenpriestsandonelay brotherforthelasttimeassembledin theMissionChurchofLoreto.From theretheywenttotheland*place. Theentirepopulation,theIndiansfrom theneighbourhoodandmanydistant places,allweeping,accompaniedthe exilestothewater'sedge.Beforethe JesuitsembarkedontheshipthesoldierswhohadcomewithPortolato expelthereligiousknelt,andwiththe otherskissedthefeetofthemissionaries.TheGovernorhimselfwas touched,andshedtearsatthesightof thegeneralgriefmanifested,especially trythenatives." "Thusended,"saysthefair-minded historianGreenhow,"therule'ofhe JesuitsinCalifornia.Thattheireffortswereattendedwithgoodcannot bedenied;thatthosewhoweretheimmediateobjectsoftheircarewerecertainlyrenderedhappier,morecomfortableandmorefreefromvicethanthey wouldotherwisehavebeen.Unfortunately,however,theaboriginesof Californiawereamongthemostindolentandbrutishofthehumanrace; withmindsassterileandunimprovable asthesoiloftheirpeninsula.
Themissionaryestablishmentofthe FranciscansinCaliforniawasbuiltup untilitnumberedtwenty-onestations ormissions,extendingfromSanDiego deAlcalatoSanFranciscodeSolano; allofthesebeingconnectedwithand accessibletoeachotherbyahighway knownasElCaminaReal,whichat thisdayispartofthesplendidsystem ofpublichighwaysoftheState. Themissionsweresoplacedthat theywereaboutaday'sjourneyapart, andtravellersupanddowntheState knewthatattheendofeachweary day'stravelthereawaitedthemhospitabletreatment,restandrefreshmentinaplacewherenoharmcould befallthem. Spacewillnotpermitustoenterinto adescriptionofthesemissions,what theycomprehendedandwhattheyaccomplished.Theirstoryisawonderfulone.Ittellshowthefaithful FranciscansonfirstcomingtoCaliforniafoundalotofmenwho"were littleabovethelevelofthemostdegradedphysicalbeingsandthemost mentallyslothfulhumancreatureson thefaceoftheearth,"andhowthey liftedthemupandtaughtthemtobecomearaceofhappyandself-supportingpeople,worshippingthewhiteman's Gbdandfollowinginthefootstepsof theSaviour;andthenhowfinallythe whitemancamealongandwreckedand ruinedallthathecouldofthework thatthesefaithfulmenhadwroughtin painandsuffering. Theirworkhasnotbeenaltogether lost,andthisisevidentinthelandin whichtheyworkedtothosewhowill see.Aftersecularisationthemissionsbecameneglectedandcommencedtofall intoruin,andtherewasonlyoneoccupied,themissionofSantaBarbara,and itinbadcondition.Severalmenfrom countriesotherthanSpainandMexico joinedafewFranciscanswhowereleft.
In1884SantaBarbarawastheonly oneoftheoldMissionsstillincharge oftheFranciscanfriars,andtheywere strugglingagainstadverseconditions. Theycouldnotobtainassistancefrom thecollegetowhichtheybelonged; theywereoldmen,andthehandof deathwasmovingamongthem;the buildingsofthemissionwerecrumblingaway,andthefriarswerewithout meanstorepairthem.
Andtopreventthecommunityfrom disappearingtheysoughtforandobtainedincorporationintotheFranciscanProvinceoftheSacredHeartof .e.,us,whoseheadquartersareinSt. Louis.
Whenwritersandoratorsspeakof theearlyFranciscanmissionariesof Californiaas"brown-robedpadres," theyindulgeina"trulypoeticaldisregardof.thefactsofhistory."The FranciscanFathersoftheearlymissionsofCaliforniaweregrey-robed,and notbrown-robed,padres.In1884the Franciscangreyfriarswelcomedto SantaBarbaratheirbrethrenofthe brownhabit,andthepadresofthegrey habitdonnedthebrownhabit.

Whentheroyaldecreeexpellingthe Jesuitshadbeenexecuted,ViceroyDe CroixandInspectorGeneralJosede GalvezofMexicoresolvedtoplacethe Californiamissionsinchargeofthe FranciscanMissionaryCollegeofSan Fernando,MexicoCity.Thiscollege wasfoundedonOctober15,1734,for thetrainingofreligioustolabourchieflyamongtheIndians. FatherJuniperoSerrawasappointed presidenteorsuperioroftheCalifornia missions.OnGoodFriday,April1, 1768,heandhisassociatesarrivedin theportof'Loretoonthepeninsula. Havingadjustedtheaffairsofthemissionsalreadyestablished,FatherJuni-

TheWestBritonsinIrelandarea peoplewhohaveceasedtothinkasa Nation,butwhopossesstheslavemilts'insuchadegreethattheyare g9verned,possiblyunknowntothemselves,byfear-fearorridicule,fear ofmonetaryloss,fearofdespotism. InmyopinionthesepeopleareasresponsibleforthewreckageofIreland. Evenwhiletheyhavebeenapparently seekingherfreedom.TheidealforIrelandisasasuburbofEnglandwhere peopletakethebrogue.Ihavemet IrishmenwhohavenomoreIrishin themthanthetonguewhosemelodious accentisonlyusedtodenounceinthe vilesttermstheirIrishbrothers.I haveheardmorevirulentabuseoflivinganddeadIrishmenbytheWest BritonthanbyanyEnglishmanIhave evermet.TheWestBritonhasgenerallysomepropertyinIrelandand alwaysgreatexpectations,thoughthe lattermayonlybeafriendlynodfrom aprincelyheadoraninvitationtoa golfingpartybysomeoneinpower. WeknowthattherewouldbenoConventionto-dayifithadnotbeenfor therebellionofyesterday,andthat HomeRulewouldbestillonthestatutebooktillafterthewarwasover, andthefallingpopulationofthecountrywouldstillberequiredtothank Godforwhattheywereabouttoreceive.
ThinkingofIrelandasa"Small Nationality."
ThehabitofthinkingofIrelandas a"SmallNationality"isbecomingprevalentamongstus,butitwillhaveto ceaseunlessthe"thinkers"become smallintheirideals.Irelandhasbecomesmallthroughherlossofpopulationandprosperity.Otherwiseshe wouldnothavebeensoverymuchbehindEnglandherselfifshornofScotlandandWales.Sheisbiggerthan manyofthelittlePowersthathave beeninpossessionoftheirownStates fornumbersofyears,andwhosenaturaladvantagesarenotsonumerous asIreland's.Hadshebeeninanother positiononthemap,Ihavelittledoubt

Lastweek,saysthe"CatholicPress" ofthe17th.inst.,Waggadressedherselfoutforagreatfete.Itwastobe thegreatestdayinthehistoryofthe QueenoftheMurrumbidgee,forshe wastoberaisedtothedignityofa Cathedralcity;andonewhohadspent manyrememberedyearsintheRiverina,ofwhichWaggaisoneofthenerve centres,andwhowas,moreover,a nativeofthesoil,wastobeconsecratedherfirstBishop.Nothingthatthe resourcesoftheAustralianChurch couldgivetothesplendidceremonial withwhichourspiritualmotherinvests suchoccasionswastobeomitted. Spacepreventsquotationfromthe portionsofthearticledealingwith finance,butenoughhasbeengivento showhowMr.MartinconsiderstheboycottwillcrippleGermanyfordecades, ifnotcenturies.Woulditnotbewell, however,toconsiderhowthisboycott wouldaffecttheAllies.Inpassing, though,onecannotbutexpresssurprisethatsowell-informedamanas Mr.Martinshouldmakethreesuch seriousmistakesashedoesinthelastquotedparagraph.Britainhasnotacquiredthewholeofthevisibleand futuresuppliesofgrainfromAustralia.Mr.Watt'sclearstatementon thatmatterwasgivenrecently.

Theselattermalignants,restrainedbylawanddoubtlessbyotherconsiderationsfromusingHunnishphysicalsinlenceagainstthoserepresentingthereligionofChrist,assassinateCatholic characterbycalumniatingpriestsand nuns,anddisplaytheir"specialmalignity"byrevivinglong-discreditedslanders.Tobesure,theirgainisbythat trade.Havingnodefinitefaithto teachtheillogicaltwaddletheycall"religion,"theyjustifytheirpositionand earntheirsalarybyattackingnuns,inventingweirdyarnsaboutlifeina convent,aninstitutionwhosedoors theyhaveneversulliedbyentering,and ridiculousfablesasto"howthepriest getsmoney." Thisletsthepublicknowthatthey havesomethingtodo,thattheyarenot altogetheridle,but"keepaneyeon Rome,"thattheystillhaveacongregation,anditletsthecongregation knowthatitspastorisperforminghis dutyofpromotingill-feelingbetween CatholicandProtestant,andishelpinggrandoldMartinLutherandgentle,genialJohnKnoxtodestroythe Papacy-which,somewhow,willnotbe destroyed.Thesepreachersofthe gospelofnastinessaccordingtoMaria Monkseemincapableoflearningthat realwickedness,cryingtoGodfor vengeance,isfoundoutsidenotonly theconventbuttheCatholicChurch itself,thoughrecentCommissionreportsandrecenttrialsmighthave taughtthemthat.Itissatisfactoryto notethatsomeofthepiousProtestants whowaruponCatholicwomendooccasionallyreceiveadrubbingfromfairminded,decentnon-Catholics,who,no doubt,havemothers,orwives,orsisterswhohavetaughtthemreverence forthesex.Anditisalsosatisfactorytonotethatsuchnon-Catholicsare notafraidtogivehonourpubliclyto thewonderfulworkdonebyCatholic Sisterhoods.
NotagreatwhileagoanAmerican non-CatholictookupthecudgelsonbehalfoftheSistersoftheGoodShepherd,thetaxationofwhoselaundries wasadvocatedbyaProtestant,who apparentlyimaginedthatthecommercialstabilityoftheUnitedStateswas endangeredbytheconventualwashing ofclothes.HewasadvisednottoimputewrongstotheSistersbecausethey washedclothes.Thecommunityisentirelycomposedofintellectual,highly educated,andsuperiorwomeninevery way,who,thinkwhatyouwish,certainlyfindnogreatpleasureinwashing otherpeople'sclothes.Iftheyare,to acertainextent,remuneratedfortheir laundrywork,itissimplytotheend ofbeinginapositiontomeetthecostlyexpensesoftakingcareofthepoor, theunfortunate,theabandoned,theorphans,andthesick,physicallyormorally;itisfortheobjectoffulfilling theirentiredutyinthehumblebut mostdesiredvirtueofabnegationfor whichtheyhavewhollysacrificedtheir talents,theirliberty,theirfortune oftentimes,andtheirlife."("MontrealGazette,"March7,1918.)Some timesincethevariousGrandJuriesof GeorgiavisitedtheCatholicinstitutionsofGeorgiaconformablywiththe "InspectionLaw,"andtheirreportis thebestrefutationofthepretended needforsuchalaw.Theyreported thatSt.Mary'sOrphanage,inchargeof theSistersofMercy,"isamodelof cleanliness,order,andgoodcareofthe children."TheHomeconductedby theLittleSistersisdescribedasa'remarkableinstitution.Themanagementishighlyefficient.Oldpeople arereceivedwithoutregardtotheirreUgiousbelief,andarecaredforinevery way.Thewholeestablishmentisin perfectorder,spotless,comfortable,and arfr-stpleasantplaceforitsinmates. CanonMcBrearty,ofSt.Anthony's CatholicChurch,Govan,diedonMonday,July22,afteralongillnessofseveralyears'duration,saysthe"Govan Press."CanonMcBrearty,whowas inhis80th.year,wasofIrishextract. tion.HewasbroughtupandeducatedinCountyArmagh.Heearlyturn. edhisthoughtstowardsthechurch,and histrainingwasdirectedtowardsthat end.Histheologicaltrainingwasre ceivedinParis,andhewasordained Priestintheyear1862inthecity.He hadthusatthetimeofhisdeathbeen clergymanfor56years.Whenhe returnedhometoScotlandhebegan hisofficialcareerascurateatWishaw, underthelateCanonMcKay.The workatWishawwasofamostarduous character,butCanonMcBrearty,al. waysamanoffinephysique,wasable forthetask.Theareathatcomposed themissioninWishawthen,isnowincludedinfivelargeparishes.After nineyearsatthemissioninWishaw hewasappointedtotakechargeofthe missionatShettleston,wherehere mainedfor14years,establishingnew stationsatBailliestonandTollcross. Whileallhisworkwasdeartohim. CanonMcBreartywashappiestwhile dealingwiththeoldfolksandwith children.Hewasgreatlybelovedby all,andhisvisitstotheschoolswere greatlyappreciatedbythechildren.
HisParishCouncilConnection.
CanonMcl3reartyjoinedtheParish Councilin1886,andforalmost30years hewasavaluedmember.AsArchbishopMacintoshtrulysaid,hewasa greatfriendtothepoorofallcreeds andofdocreeds.HewastherepresentativefortheoldThirdWard,but hisactivitiesandinterestswerenot confinedtoanyward.TheCanoncame toGovanatatimewhentherewas verygreatdistress.Therewasno CatholicmemberfromGovanonthe ParochialBoard,asitwasthencalled. Hehadtowaitforayearbeforehe couldgetaresidentialqualification.

HisRelationshipWithProtestants. Itwillbeseenfromtheabovethat theCanon'srelationshipwiththegeneralpublicofGovanhasalwaysbeenof amostcordialcharacter.Hesaidthat whenhecamefirsttoGovaneverythingwasinasorrystate,therewas notastickintheyards.Publicdin nerswerebeinggiventohisownpeopleandtootherpoorpeople.Atthat timemanyProtestantladiesandgentlemencametohim,andmanyahelp andencouragementhehadreceived fromthem.Hedesiredtobuildadecenthouseforhimself.Forthatpur posehispeoplefirstofallsubscribed about£1,000,andthenoutsidefriends helpedwithanother£1,000.Catholics andProtestantstogetherbuilttherectory.Amongotherroomsinthat housetherewasadiningroom,but therewasnofurnitureinit.Mr. CharlesO'Neill,whowasaProtestant coalmerchant,gavehimachequewith whichhefurnishedtheroom,that moneywasentirelysubscribedbyProtestants.Protestantsalwaysassisted himinhissalesofworkandbazaars. TheCanonwasagreatfavouriteatthe OldFolks'dinners,andusedtomake welcomeappearancesthere.Hewasa friendofSirJohnAnthonyandexProvostKirkwoodformanyyears.IndeedtheCanonwasveryfriendlywith allthepublicrepresentativesinGovan.Duringtheperiodsofdistresshe alwaysworkedincooperationandharmonywiththeauthorities,anddid everythinginhispoweratalltimesto alleviatesuffering. ForaboutthreeyearstheCanonhas beenmoreorlessaninvalid.Occasionallyhisstrengthrevived,andhe wasabletoofficiateinSt.Anthony's. Aboutayearagohebecamecompletely unabletodoanything.InMarchof thisyearthemaindutiesofthecharge wereundertakenbyFatherCollins.As apreacherCanonMcBreartywassim pleandhomely,butexceedinglypracticalandwelladaptedtothecomprehensionofhishearers.Hewasamost acceptablespeakeronpublicplatforms, withapawkygenialitythatfounda waytoallhearts.Hewasexceedingly devotedtohisofficeandcalling,and usedtosaythatifhehadtolivehis lifealloveragainhewouldlivehis lifeinthesameway.Oncehesaidto apressrepresentative,"Iamperfectly happy.Ineverenvytheordinary marriedman.IndeedIknowmany marriedmenwhowouldgiveagood dealtobeinmyshoes."CanonMcBreartywaskeenlyinterestedineverythingpertainingtoIreland.Hewas interestedinthestudyofIrishGaelic. HetouchedGovanlifeatmanypoints, andhisdemiseremovesfromourmidst onewhowasheldinhighesteembyall whoknewhim.

TheBridgetownConventpupils'annualball,whichwasheldintheMechanics'Hallonthe9th.inst.,wasone ofthemostsuccessfulfunctionsheld hereduringrecentyears.Thoseresponsibleforthedecorativearangementsofthehallandsupperroomhave everyreasontocongratulatethemselvesonthesuccessoftheirefforts; manyofthosepresenthavingexpressed theiradmirationoftheartisticmanner inwhichthesehadbeeneffected.
Shortlyafter7.30p.m.theball-room wascrowdedwithexpectantjuveniles, arrayedinbeautifulfancycostumes, eagertobegintheirevening'senjoyment.Thecharactersrepresentedwere generallywellsustained;particularly duringthegrandmarch,whichwas executedwithprecision,andwasan objectlessonintheartofskilfultrain-

AswewritetheSwanelectionis practicallyover,andthewin-the-war partyhasreceivedthefirsttasteofthe dishwhichwillbeservedouttoit whentheboyscomehome,andwhen thenextelectioncomesoff.Carboy iswellinthelead,andlikelytostay there.Mr.BasilMurrayiswellin therunning,andthepollingwellindicateswhatthepublicthinkofthesocalledNationalists.Weunderstand thatsomenewlegislationistobeenactedbeforethenextelection,togive

theblindmouths,andtheplace-huntersachanceofholdingontotheir cheapunearnedcrustwithoutprofitto theircountryandthepeopletheymisrepresent.However,itistobehoped thatinspiteoftheloader!dice,the AustralianpeoplewillinthefuturefollowtheleadgiventhembytheelectoratewhichthelateLordForrestrepresentedsoablyandsolong.Lcrd ForrestwasnaturallyaConservative intheory,butinpractice,notwithstandingallstatementstothecontrary, hewasademocrat.Hadhebeenborn indifferentcircumstances,hewould havebeentheoreticallyandpractically onewiththemasses.Mannerschange withthemarchoftime,anithepoliticalprophetsofyesterdayarethe fossilsoftoday.Thefinishofthewar willbethedawnofanewgenerationin whichhumanconduct,whilebasedon theoldunshakeablefoundationof Christianethics,willbegarbedinnew raiment.Itistimeyoungfreshminds badanopportunityofshapingtheir country'sdestiny,andforthatreason, wearegladCorboyhasnotmissedhis chance.Thiscountryiswearyofantiquatedpoliticalimportationswhose chiefbusinessistheadvancementof personalinterests,andwire-pullingfor certainfriends.Soachangeisagood thing,andsincethesloganofthehour isAustraliafirst,itisconsolingthata youngAustralian,andayoungWestralien,atthat,shouldbecalleduponto 'N.servehiscountryaswellinitsnational councilsasonitsbattlefields.
Oneofthebogeysputupagainst CorboywasthathewasaCatholic,and thathewasbeingrunintheinterests oftheCatholicChurch,whichis,weare informed,goingtoundermineallstatecraft,Freemasonry,Protestantism, etc.,etc.Now,everybodywithbrains knowsthattheCatholicChurchistoo busyinconstructiveworkonnewfresh sitestowearyitselfwiththegraceless taskofpullingdownmoth-eatenand white-ant-infestedstructures.Theonly thingtheChurchdoesistostimulate outsideinstitutions,evenbyaspiritof rivalry.Shehatesbigotry,andis opentoinspection.Thosewhoapproachnearer,andlearnreallytoknow herearedisillusionedreadily.Sheis atruenationbuilder,andherfeetare onimpregnablefoundations.
But,CorboyisnotaCatholic.We hateheardthathisfathercamefrom Ireland,andhisonlyshortcomingis that,notthroughhisownfault,heis notoftheFaithofhisfathers.We haveknownCorboysCatholics,and goodones,butsinceheisnotaCatholic,thesanctimoniousolddamesof Bunbury,andelsewhere,mayfearlessly proceedwiththeirknitting.LabouritesshouldfeelgratifiedatCorboy's success.Itwillgivethemconfidence forthefuture.Yet,itwouldbewise forLabourtorealisethatitgetsthe credit,deservedlyorotherwise,ofhavingtheCatholicChurchatitsback; andthatitadoptsawrongpolicy whenitallowstheCameronsandthe Clementsonsethocgenusomneto battenuponit,anddictatetointelligentfolk. TheelectionofCorboywillbea goodomen.Wehopethatfresh groundwillcontinuetobebroken. EveninourStateParliamentachange iseminentlydesirable.Itisacurious thingforpeopletotalkofCatholics runningeverythingwhenthereisa rumourabroadthatcertainpublicofficialsstandbetweenCatholiccivilservantsandtheadvancementtowhich, becauseoflengthofserviceandefficiency,theyarejustlyentitled.Catholics.likeCorboys,onlywantthe justiceandfairplaywhichascitizens theyareentitledto,andtheywillbe quitesatisfied.

AccordingtotheServiceJournalsan armyorderhasgoneintoeffectchangingthechaplains'insigniafromthe Crosstotheshepherd'scrookoutofdeferencetotheJewishrabbisserving withtheforces.Theyalreadypossessedtheprivilegeofsubstitutingthe crookfortheregularchaplains'insignia,buttheycontendedthattherewas noreasonwhyasymbolcouldnotbe adoptedsuitabletoallcreedsandoffensivetonone.Asaresultthenew WarDepartmentorder. Therewasverylittletodistinguish thechaplainfromthelineofficerbefore theissuanceofthisorder,withthe Crossstillmarkinghiscollar.Ifthe Crossgoestherewillbenothingatall, fortheshepherd'scrookisaveryindefinitesymbol,andcaneasilybemistakenforthedoctors'caduceus.Itmay notbeamisstoremarkthattherecan benocauseforcomplaintonthepart oftheJewishsoldierregardingtheallowancemadebythemilitaryauthoritiesfortheobservanceofhisreligious practices.
Thequotaofchaplainsassignedto thedifferentdenominationsisproportionatetothemembersofthedenominationsrepresentedinthefightingforces. Therehasneverbeenanystatement
fromtheWarDepartmentannouncing thattherearefewerChristiansinthe armythannon-Christians,ormoreJewishchaplainsthanothers.Whythen discriminateagainstthemajorityout ofdeferencetotheminority,whenthe rightsoftheminorityarealreadysecuredbyallowingthemtoadopttheir owninsignia? IntheEnglisharmytherearemany Indiantroops,andtheyhaverendered agoodaccountofthemselvessincethe beginningofthegreatwar,yetTommy AtkinsinFranceandFlandersandfaroffMesopotamiahasnotbeendeprived ofhis"bullybeef"becausehislittle brownbrotherregardsthecowasasacredanimal."Sahib,"saidtheIndian soldiertohisEnglishcommander,"you areeatingmysacredcow.""No,"repliedtheofficer,'Iameatingmycow anditisnotsacred.Youdonothave toeatit,butyouhavetoremember thatyouarenotthewholearmy,but onlyapartofit,andnotaverylarge partatthat."

Inanswertoarequestforinformation,theCatholicFederationofNew SouthWaleswasinformedbyCaptain Mackintosh,fortheofficerinchargeof theBaseRecords,VictoriaBarracks, Melbourne,thattoJune7th,theCatholicproportionofenlistmentswas19 percent.oftherankandfile,and9.8 percent.ofofficersintheA.I.F.The Catholicproportionofthepopulation wasatthelastcensus20.4percent., provingthatsofarasenlistmentsare concerned,theCatholicbodyhas,despiteeveryobstacletoenlistment,despitetheuncheckedinsultsofbigots, anddespitetheblundersassociated withthegovernmentofIreland,practicallyreacheditquota.Hadwenot thewordofCaptainMackintoshfor thiswewouldscarcelycreditit,forwe knewwellthattheinsultsofthebigots havecutdeeply.Butitisafact,recordedbytheauthorities,andwethereforeacceptit.Itwillberemembered thatwhenanotherstatementwasissued,recordstaken'onMarch23rd,1916, showedthattheCatholicproportion wasthen17.5percent.,whiletheproportionofthreeotherreligiousdenominations,amongthemtheWesleyans, wasabout13.5percent.oftheenlistmentincontrasttoapopulationproportionof16percent.Wenotewith wonder,inthisreport,thattheproportionofCatholicofficersisexactlyonehalftheproportionofrankandfile. Wewouldlikeanexplanationofthis remarkablefact.
ConscriptionforIreland
Animpartialobservescanrealiseto thefullthestupidityoftheexpectation thatIrishrecruitswillrushforward now,inthousands,atthebiddingof theirmistress.Since1801,Ireland hasbeencontinuouslyunderBritish influence;afewyearsago,theBritish peoplegaveIrelandherlegislativeindependence,butsinisterinfluenceat workbehindthescreensheldupthe Billwhichhadbeencarriedbythe people'srepresentatives.TheGovernmentintroducedafreshHomeRule Bill,andabandonedit;itthreatened conscription,andwasterrorisedinto withholdingit.Andafterthisgiganticseriesofblunders,theGovernment expectsmorerecruits!Yetinspite ofall,IrelandhasstoodbytheAllies inawaythatcanonly,inthecircumstances,betermedmarvellous.The vicioussnarlingoftheCarsonites soundsrathercomicalafterlisteningto CaptainMcMahon,amemberofthe BritishRecruitingMissioninAmerica: "IfIrelandwerepro-Germandoyou suppose58.1percent.ofhermanpowerwouldhavevolunteeredupto lastJanuary?Ifshewerepro-Germancanyouimagine40,000or50,000 menenlistingsincetheuprisingin Dublin?Ifyouknewwhatthemen whohavebeenthroughthebattlesbelieve-officersofallranksinallarmieswhoknowtheforlornhopesturning thetidetovictory,ofimpregnable placescaptured,ofdivisions,yes,whole armies,beingsavedbyIrishtroops,you wouldhaveareadyanswertothose whoseemtothinkthatwehavedone little,andaredoingnothingnow.We neednoapologies,nodefence.Our standardstellthestory."

ItwasoneofthelargestseeninBoulderforsomeconsiderabletime.The remains,whichwereencasedinapure whitecasketwithsilverfurnishings, wereconveyedtoAllHallowsChurch, wheretheRev.FatherDonogherofficiated,thencetotheKalgoorlieCemetery.TheRev.BrotherDaly,PrincipaloftheChristianBrothers'College,andtheRev.BrotherWhitewalkedinfrontofthefuneralcortege,and werefollowedbytheCollegeCadet Corps,underLieut.Bennets,andthe remainderofthecollegeboys,numberingaboutthreehundredinall.All theChristianBrothers,andMessrs. SimpsonandHoran,ofthecollege staff,wereinattendance. Therewasafinegatheringatthe HibernianHalllastWednesdayevening,whenthepupilsofSt.Joseph's School,SouthPerth,gavetheirannual concert.Thefunctionwasmostenjoyable,andtherewasmuchevidence ofthecarefultrainingimpartedbythe Sisters.AduetbyMissesCreedon andDalyintroducedamostdelightful programme.Achorusentitled"The musicofthebirds"washarmoniously renderedbythegirls.MissDorothy Tippet'selocutionaryitem,'Bubbles," wasanexampleofhowwelltheelocutionteacherattendstoherpupils,while thescenesong,"ThemodestQuakeresses,"waseffectivelyrenderedby MissesBruning,Gallagher,O'Connor, andSellenger.Weweregladtohear MissV.Crawford'svoiceagain,and itseemsascharminglysweetas ever.ASpanishdancewasgracefully executedbysomeoftheseniorgirls.In "BeesandButterflies"thelittleones, sodeftlyarrayed,actedtheirpartinan exceedinglycreditablemanner.The fancyribbondrillwasagalaxyofcolour."TheTramps"werejustthe thing,whiletheitembyMissesNoonan andTippetwasarealtreat.MissV. Naturefrowneddarklyonthepromotersoftheeuchretournamentmil danceheldintheWestGuildfordHa'l onWednesdaynight,the23rd.ult,and earlyintheeveningitlookedeesthough theheavyrainwoulddoomtheirefforts tofailure.However,thegoodpeople ofWestGuildfordwerenottobedenied,andwhenMr.Walkersettheball rollingquiteafairnumber,notonly fromthelocalsuburb,butalsofrom GuildfordandMidland,tooktheirseats totakepartinthetournament.On thefinalbellsoundingitwasfound thatMr.Ecclestonhadcarriedoffthe gent'sprize,witheightgamestohis credit.WithsevengameseachMis. ThefeastofSS.SimonandJudewas celebratedonlastMonday,andanexceedinglygoodcongregationforaweek dayattended.TheMassofthefeast wascelebratedbytheVeryRev.Dean Kiely,andtheAltarSocietyhaddecoratedthealtarwithbrightredgladioli,whichharmonisedbeautifullywith theredvestmentsofthefeast. Thepresenceofagreatmanymembers oftheKnightsofColumbusamongthe troopsthere,andparticularlyamong theofficers,naturallyraisedthequestionastowhethercorrespondingwork fortheCatholicfightingmencouldnot bedone.TheKnightsofColumbusas anorganisationrecognisedtheneed, andattheirownexpenseproceededto erectachainofbuildingsinmorethan ascoreofplacesinNewMexico,Arizona.andTexas,inwhichexcellentresultsweresecured.Needlesstosay, thecostoferectingandmaintaining thiselaboratesystemofrecreationhalls ontherisingwar-costsofthetimeduringthemonthswhentheUnitedStates troopswereatthebordermadealarge itemofexpenditure.
Thiswasmetentirelyoutofthe fundsoftheOrder,noappealtoothers forhelpbeingmade.Therecreation hallsandallthesocialandentertainmentfacilitiesthusinstitutedwere thrownopenwithoutdistinctionand withcordialgood-willtoarmymenof allcreeds.OfthethousandsofnonCatholicswhotookadvantageofthem, manydoubtreceivedfromthisexperien,eheirfirstideawhatthorot,111,- Ctholicsronlcl equip;!1:1, con,,tantuse,theofficersbeingpar-
ticularlydelightedwiththem,asthey haveoftensaid.
Consequently,whenAmericaentered theEuropeanwartheKnightsofColumbuswereinaveryfavourablepositionforcontinuingonalargerscale theworktheyhadshownthemselvesso capableofding.TheUnitedStates authorities,notingtheadmirablesuccessoftheexperimentandobserving theutterlackofanythinglikethestirringupofbigotry,wereinaposition torealisehowmuchtheKnightsof Columbuscouldaccomplish.Hence theirwillingnesstoapproveandrecommendtheirworkandencourageitin everyway.HadwegoneintotheEuropeanconflictwithoutthatexperience ontheborder,thereprobablywould havebeenmanydifficultiesinsecuring thepromptorganisationofCatholic recreationalandsocialfacilities. ThatsameProvidentialaspecthas continuedineveryfeatureofthework. ThepresenceoftheseKnightsofColumbushallsincampsinthiscountry andwhereverthesoldiersareinFrance hasdonemorethananythingelsethat hashappenedinourgenerationtoallay bigotry,totakethestingoutofintolerance,andabovealltogiveanobjectlessontoignoranceofwhattherelationoftheChurchis,underwarconditions,notonlytoherownsons,but alsotothosenotofherfold.Theresulthasbeenmostsatisfactory.There islittledifficultynowinhavingmunicipalandevennationalauthoritiesinterferetopreventthepublicventingof bigotrytowardCatholicsandthe Church,forCatholicshavecometooccupytooprominentaplaceinthe armyandthenavy.
TheKnightsofColumbusbuildings havebeenliterallythrongedduringrecreationhours,butthegreatsurprise hasbeentofindthehallscrowdednot onlyforthesocialeveningsandentertainmentsbutalsoforthereligious services.TheKnightsofColumbus entertainmentshavepresentedsomeof theverybestartisticandmusicaltalentinthecountryandhavealsofurnishedamusementsarrangedbythe menthemselves.Thecordialslogan hasalwaysbeen:"EverybodyWelcome andEverythingFreefortheMenHere andOverseas."Nowonderthenthat accustomedastheyweretogotothe K.ofC.buildingsonotheroccasio,is, non-Catholicsoldierswhentheysaw theirCatholicfellowscrowdingtoMass andreligiousserviceshaveoftengone withthemtoo.Thesurpriseofcourse hasbeenforallthearmytofindhow faithfulyoungCatholicmenareinattendingtotheirreligiousduties,so theirbrothersoldiers,notoftheFaith, havegoneinmanyinstancestofindout whattheatractionwas.Notafitw ofthemwhopossiblywentthinking thattheywouldfindnothingbutsome curioussuperstatiouspracticehave beenstronglyimpressedwithwhatthey sawandremainedtopray.Infact theKnightsofColumbusencampment hallsherehaveprovedrealnon-Catholic missionsinthebestsenseoftheword.
Nowitbeginstoloukasthoughsome effec',.vithesanehindwouldbeprocuredinforeigncountriestoo.Al-
readythereisaK.ofC.headquarters onthestreetoftheMadelineinParis andcentresinotherlargecities,notablyatportsofdisembarkationwhere fullyequippedK.ofC.buildingsare nowinoperation.ItiseasytounderstandhowmuchedificationforFrenchmenthereisinthis.TheHierarchy ofFrancehaverecognisedthevalueof thework,andhavenotbeentooslow toexpresstheirpubliccommendation andtogivehelptoitineverywaythat theycould.EventheFrenchGovernmenthaslearnedtoappreciatethe valueoftheKnightsofColumbuswar workandfarfromputtinganyobstacleinthewayhasdonemuchto helpiton.Thebesttestimonytothis isthefactthattheFrenchGovernmentassigned150English-speakingsoldier-priestsfromtheFrencharmyto workwiththeKnightsofColumbus chaplains.Ifthepresenceofthe KnightsofColumbusinFrancehad donenomorethanthusaffordopportunitiesforFrenchprieststodotheir properecclesiasticalworkitmaywell beconsideredtohavefullyrepaidwhateverexpensewasincurredinsettingup K.ofC.buildingsinFrance.
