Aftergivingasketchoftheearly lifeofW.M.Hughes,Mr.E.T.Raymond,inanarticlein"Everyman,"the cleverLondonweekly,says: In1915Mr.Hughesvisitedthiscoun. try.HeknewverylittleofEnglish life,buthehadhisearlymemories, whichsufficedtogivehimajustcontemptformanyofourinstitutions,but alsoamostunjustnotionofthereal qualitiesofthenation.Butheeither didnotknow,orhadforgotten,that ouroldandpolishedsocietybreedsin greatnumberspersonswhoaredescribedbythepoliceasconfidencemen. ScotlandYardtakescognisanceonly ofthecoarservarietiesoftheclass.It affectstoknownothingofthosewho infestpoliticalsociety,lyinginwait forinnocentsfromoverseasandthe provinces.Mr.Hughes'sfirstspeech hadmuchthesameeffectonthesegentlementhattheappearanceofastout Suffolkfarmermightonaroomfulof professionalcrooks.Hefoundhimselfsurroundedwithpersonsflashing greatwadsofBankofPatriotism notes,whichhe,poorman!couldnot possiblydetectassuprious.Before honestMr.Hugheswellknewwhathe wasdoing,hewashocussed,andhehas notyetsucceededinthrowingoffthe influenceofthedrugs.
BillyGetsIntoBadCompany. Itsuitedthepoliticalpurposesofa certaincliquetorepresentMr.Hughes astheoneearnestmanstrugglingto freetheBritishCommonwealthfrom Germaninfluences,butfrustratedin thatendeavourbyaknotofEnglish partypoliticians.Broadlyspeaking, thisclique,ofallothers,wasmostnaturallyhostiletoeveryidealMr.Hughes stoodforinAustralianpolitics.ItdesiredProtectionintheinterestsof Britishlandlordsandmanufacturers, andnot,asProtectionismaintained inAustralia,intheinterestsofthe workers.ItstoodforakindofImperialismwhich,inthelongrun,must havecomeintocollisionwiththequite naturaldesireofAustraliatobecome moreandmoreaseparatenation.It stoodforminorityrulebothinGreat BritainandinIreland.Ithadbeen, morethananyparty,responsiblefor thestagnationwhichyoungHughesof theHorseferry-roadhadfoundintolerable.Butitfoundinthefervourof thematurerHughesaweaponwhichit coulduse,andthatweaponwasused withoutscruple.

Suchamanmaybeusefulifhisenergiesareproperlycontrolledandappliedtoasuitableobjective.Hemay easilybecomeacalamitousnuisanceif herunsamok,justnow.Itcannotbe agoodthingtopermitanyconsiderablepartyintheUnitedKingdomto believethattheyhaveadetermined enemyinthePrimeMinisterofan overseasdominion.Norcanitbefor thebenefitoftheAllianceasawhole thatMr.Hughesshouldproclaimat thistimethataMonroeDoctrinefor thePacificisanessentialofageneral peace.Strangelyenough,theworld atlargeisnomoreinterestedinthe specialAustralianpointofviewthan itisinthespecialMontenegrinpoint ofview.WecannotblameMr.Hughes forhislackofproportion;therewere BritishpropagandistswhooncebelievedthatFranceandRussia,Italy,and theUnitedStates,wereenormouslyinterestedinthebombingofBroadstairs andtheshellingofHartlepool.

Mr.Hughes,asanAustralianstatesman,mustbelefttothejudgmentof Australia.Australiahasdeclined twicetopassamandateforconscriptionathisinvitation-someaddbecauseofhisinvitation-anditiswhisperedwithsomeassurancethatthe PrimeMinisterisnotpreciselyanxious toterminatehispresentvisittoLondon.ItispointedoutbyAustralian criticsthatthegreatworkwhichhe claimscreditfor,"cuttingthetentacles ofthegreatmetaloctopus,"etc.,was merelyamatterofofficialroutine; contractswithGermanfirmshadnecessarilytobebrokenwhenwarcame. Thereis,infact.noevidencefrom theantipodesthatMr.Hughesisregardedasamanofveryexceptional calibre,andheretainsofficechieflyon thegroundthatitisundesirableto complicatethepoliticalposition.

Still,Mr.HughesisanAustralian, andAustraliawouldnodoubtbewith himinanyseriousdisputewithBritish Ministers.Itisthatpossibilitywhich makessoexceedinglyseriousthetransformationofaDominionPrimeMinisterintoaBritishpartyasset.The formalrelationsofAustralia,orany otherdominion,tothemothercountryareoflessimportancethanmany peopleimagine.Itreallydoesnot matterverymuchwhetherwecontinue tosendsecond-ratenoblementorepresenttheKingintheCommonwealth. Whatdoesmatteristhatthereshallbe nosenseofgrievanceorincompatibility betweenthetwocommunities,that Australiashallhavenofeelingofbeing usedforBritishpurposes,andthat Britainshallbefreefromanyimpressionofbeing-hustledorbustledby Australia.

Ifitaimedsimplyatfixingforever thestatusarrivedatafterthewar,it wouldbeonlyanotherHolyAlliance, aninstrumentofoppressionwhich couldaseasilybeusedforpurposesof industrialslaveryasforthedestruction ofnationalism.AsfarasMr.Hughes isintelligible,itwouldseemthathe envisagesaworldinwhichwhatis calledAnglo-Saxondomwillbeall-powerful.Thatmaybeverypleasingto Anglo-Saxonracialpride.Havewe thesmallestguaranteethattherestof theworld-anotinconsiderablefinmeet-willbecontent?
SundaylastwasanimportantoccasionatKellerberrin,foronthatoccasiontheenterpriselaunchedoneyear agowasbroughtnearerrealisationby theopeningofthemagnificentnew BoardingSchool.Therewasalarge gatheringfromthetownandsurroundingdistrict,andhisGraceblessedand insertedthefoundationtablet,after whichalladjournedtotheChurch, wheretheArchbishopaddressedthe peopleinhisusualeloquentway,congratulatingpriestandpeopleonthe excellentresultstheyhadachievedin thecourseofthepastthreeyears,and hewasallthemoreimpressedand gratifiedwhenheconsideredthatonly afewshortyearsagotherewasnota singleChurchthroughouttheextentof thatenormousdistrict.Onthatday hewaspleasedtoseethatKellerberrin wasequippedaswell,ifnotbetter,than mostparishesintheArchdiocese,a beautifulChurch,aschoolandconvent,andtodaytheycrownedallwith theopeningofthenewboarding school,wherethechildrenoftheoutbacksettlerscouldsecurethateducationalandreligioustrainingwhichthe SistersofSt.Josephcansoefficiently impart.Healsocongratulatedthe Sistersonthegreatworktheyhad achievedduringtheirtwelvemonthsin thedistrict.Aftertheaddressacollectionwastakenuptowardsthebuildingfund,and£46wasnetted.BenedictionoftheBlessedSacramentbrought AfternoonteawasprovidedbytheCathefunctiontoanappropriateclose. tholicladiesintheschoolroom,and thevisitorswereshownthroughthe newbuilding.

O'Gradypresidingoverafairattendance.Afairamountofbusinesswas transacted.Itwasdecidedtoplaceon recordthethanksoftheSocietyto MesdamesKingandDavies,andthose whohelpedthemfortheirworkinconnectionwiththerecentsocialand dance,whichprovedtobeaverysuccessfulfunction.Itwasalsoresolved thatonandafterNovember7,allfuturemeetingwillbeheldintheYoung IrelandRooms,ontopofthe"WA. Aslip-shodeditorwhointheseunpatriarchaldayallowsanewsitemto theeffectthatanoldcountryresidentpassedawayattheripeoldageof 666mayinthesehot-bloodedwardays beexcusedonthepleaofbrainfag, orjingoitis,butwhenaquestionsuch astherespectivepercentagesofCatholicsintheA.I.F.isknowingly,orunwittingly,tamperedwith,itishigh timethattheeditor'signoranceor prejudiceshouldbepenalised.Asall Australiaknows.thesectarianbogey hasbeenrunoffitsfeetduringthe pasttwoyears,andthebiasedpress hasfedtheill-manneredbeastfrom everypossiblesource.Sofaraswe know,nomeanshasbeenleftuntried whenthepropagandawasdirected againstCatholics,who,inspiteofthe lucubrationsofthebigot,arealmost theonlypeoplewhohavebeenpermittedtothinkforthemselvesupongreat questionsaffectingthecommongood. Now,thesebethewaysofliberty. OnebrotheringaolinIrelandbecause hebelievesIrelandisasmallnation withrightsjustthesameasBelgium orAlsace;theotherbrothercoming backacrippletohiswifeandfamily tothisStateafteryearsoffightingfor thesameprinciplesinthetrenchesof France.Notreatmentistoobadfor theseIrish.
Ofcourse,whensomepressurewas broughttobearuponthebiasedmorn. ingpaper,thecorrectionwasmade, but,then,aliewhichhaspopularpat. ronageisveryhardtocatch.Itis notthefirsttimethe"West"hasgiven Catholicsasampleofitsslimy,sneaky methods.AfewmonthsagoFather Fahey,D.S.O.,onewhosenameissome. thingtoconjurewithevenamongfairmindednon-Catholics,returnedtothis State.Heisoneofthosewho,like allcapablepeople,isaversetothe limelight,but,whilethe"West"paid paltrycomplimentstohimonhisreturn,itconsistentlyboostsotherswho havenotevenseen,muchlessexperienced,thetrialsthechaplainofthe 11thBattalionhashadtoputupwith. Somereligiousserviceofapatriotic,or national,character.takesplacehere, andwhiletheramshackleandirresponsiblebethelgetshalfacolumnofareport,thefunctionsoftheCathedralof theImmaculateConceptionaredismissedwithafrozenjournalisticnod. Catholics,especiallyinconnectionwith thewar,havenoreasontoapologisefor theirexistence.ItistheCatholic Churchwhichissavingtheworldnow fromthebeastofLutheranism.Mili tarism,justlike Protestantism, haditsseminalcauses sown atWittenburg.IfGeneralissimoFoch isthemanofthehour,heis alsotheCatholicsoldierofthehour. Oneveryfront,.Catholicsholdtheir own,andtheCatholicsoldiersofAustraliahavearighttolaurelsfairasany OfthefiveVictoriaCrosseswonby menfromWA.,threehavebeenwon byCatholics,afactthatthe"West,"in itsgreatdesirefornews,hasnotyet discovered.OurCatholicschools,even thehumblelittleconvents,havesent forthladswhohavecoveredthemselveswithgloryfromSueztoBulleeourt.Thefactthattheproportion ofCatholicofficersintheA.I.F.isso smalltoooccurseitherfromaccident ordesign.AcoupleofyearsagoDr. ManniztoldthepublicofAustralia whyCatholicshadnottheirdueproportionintheranks,andthePrelateof Melbournewasnearerthetruththan thepressgavehimcreditfor.Some people,whoaresatisfiedwithasop, pointtoCatholicsinhighmilitary positions,but,whyshouldtheynotbe proportionatelyrepresented?Nocamouflage,'notrickery,caninjureour

OnJune14,"TheNewEurope"tells us,theTownCouncilofLaibachunanimouslyremovedthenameofDoctbrSusterichfromtherollofitsfreemen,andsubstitutedthatofthePrinceBishop,MonsignorJeglic.Ourreadersalreadyknowsomethingofthis prelate,fromtheabsurdcablegrams, whichappearedinourdailypapers. WeexpressnoopinioneitheronAustro-HungarianoronAnglo-Irishpolitics,butweproposeafewconsiderationsonthegeneralCatholicinterests involved,andontheprospectsofthat internationalagreementwhichisitself aprimeCatholicinterest.Weneed notinsultourreaders'intelligenceby labouringthepointthatwhateverthe generalprinciplesare,theymustbe appliedallround.Thepresscannot cryupMonsignorJeglicasapatriot aidcrydownCardinalLogueasafomenterofrebellioninthesamebreath. Itmusttakeitschoiceandsticktoit; somuchiselementary.But,aswe shouldbethefirsttoadmit,amere negativeofthissortdoesnotcarryone muchfurther.Amorefruitfullineof thoughtappearstorunratheronsome suchlines.asthese.Itisofnouse forthelargenationalitiesmerelyto reproachthesmall,howeverjustifiably, fornottakingwiderviews,norfor thesmallsimplytostandout,however justifiably,fromthelargerinterests. Theproblemsareatanimpasse,and mustremainatanimpasse,unlessall willthrowthemselvesuponthenew orderwhichitisthechiefinterestof mankindthatthiswarshallproduce. AsMr.WilsonsaidonIndependence Day,wemustfallbarnupon"thedeterminationofwhatthethinkingpeoplesoftheworlddesire,withtheir longinghopeforjusticeandforsocial freedomandopportunity."ThePope andthePresidentareleadingtheworld inthismatter,andtheworld'swisdom willbetofollowtheirlead,astheonly hopenotonlyforinternationalpeace, butforthesettlementofnationalproblemswithinthesphereofeachPower. Twopracticalresultsfollow.The largernationsmustbepreparedto taketheirplaceatacommoncouncil board.Russiansmustnotsaythat Polandis"nobusiness"oftheFrench, orAustriansthatJugo-Slaviais"no business"oftheEnglish,orItalythat Dalmatiais"nobusiness"oftheSlays, orEnglandthatIrelandis"nobusiness"oftheAmericans.Weareall memberseachoftheother-aneminentlysounddoctrinewhichbrought Christendomtobirthandbuiltitup. Onewondersifthewarwhichisgoingtoachievesomanyrevolutionswill beabletokillcant.Ifitdoesnot therewillbesomuchinsincerityleft thatitwillquicklybetimetohave anotherwartoreducethenumberof thosewhoarelivingbythelawofcant. Therootofcantisinsincerityand hypocrisy.Therearemanypersons wellknowntouswhohavenotthe leastqualmsofconscienceabopttelling liesorcommittinggrosssins,butwho thinkitistheunpardonableoffence shouldanyonehavethemoralcourage tocallaliarorabeastbyhisproper name.Tosuchanextenthascantgot holdofmankindthatevendecentpeoplehavefalleninwiththehypocritical viewsthatprevail;andevenChristian ministerswhoaresupposedtobefamiliarwiththeGospelholduptheirhands inhorrorifoneimitatesChrist,who wasnotmealy-mouthedanddidnot hesitatetocallaliarorahypocrite byhisrightname. ItisimpossibletodisguisethesimplefactthatanAlliedvictorymust, ofnecessity,beaCatholicvictory; andthatthedefeatoftheCatholic armiesofItaly,France,andBelgium would,initsveryessence,meanthe subjectionofCatholicEurope.Read, ingthestupidcables,commentsand pamphletsofattackdirectedagainst thePopealmostsincethewarbegan, onewouldimaginethattheHoly Father'sinterestslaynotinthewelfareofhisownchildren,butinthe triumphofLutheranism.Orangeism, materialism,oranyother"ism"outsidetheCatholicChurch. InthearmiesofGreatBritain'sallies alreadynamed,aswellasinthearmies ofPortugal,Poland,Cuba,CzechoSlovakprovinces,andtheseveralSouth AmericanStates,theoverwhelmingpreponderanceofthesoldiersbelongtothe ancientfaith.Inaddition,wehave thelargenumbersofCatholicmenbelongingtothelegionsoftheUnited Kingdom,Canada,SouthAfrica,New Zealand,andAmerica.Inthelatter greatRepublicthepercentageofCatholicsoldiersisfaraheadofallother denominations,whilethenumberof CatholicsintheAmericannavyexceedsthisgreatrecordbyalmost50 percent.FromoneCatholicassociationalone-theKnightsofColumbusover128,900hadjoinedthecoloursup totheendofAugust.
Inthetragic,earlydaysofArmageddon,whenBelgium'simmortal standagainstcolossalnumberssaved Englandfrominvasion,itwastheCa tholicKing,Albert,CardinalMercer. GeneralLeman,andtheBurgomaster Maxwhoinspiredtheirpeopleina strugglewhichhasbecometheworld's epic.HadCatholicBelgiumchosen thelineofleastresistance,whichwould havesavedherpeopleandterritory fromphysicaldestruction,thewar musthavetakenaturnwhichwould haveimperilledthedestinyoftheBrit. ishEmpire.Thegreatsacrificethen madeshouldsilenceforalltimethe tonguesofthoseanti-Catholicslandererswhoowetheirsafetyandthenoblestexampleofthewartoanheroic Catholicpeople.
Ifinthesecountriespeculiarand generoustributeisduetothepart playedbyCatholicsoldiers,inAmerica theremarkableactivitiesofCatholic civilianscallsforspecialrecognition. OnlythroughAmerica'sassistancecould ithavebeenpossibletosupplythe extratonnageneededtomakegood thestrikingdeficitinshippingwith whichwestartedthisyear.Charles Schwab,anexemplaryCatholic,transformedtheBethlehemSteelWorksinto thegreatestrivalofKruppsgunsand armour-platefactory,andthenasDirector-GeneraloftheEmergencyFleet Corporationhehasperformedmiracles inthewayofship-building.Mr. Schwab'sentryintothisgreatenterprisewasbroughtaboutbytheIrishAmerican,EdwardHurley,aKnightof Columbus,ChairmanoftheUnited StatesShippingBoard.

ThereisnomentionintheActof the£7,000,000youstatewastobean annualpresenttoIreland.Itsays half-a-millionwastobepaidtoIreland forthreeyears,tobethenreducedby £50,000ayearuntilitreached£200,000. TheRoyalCommissionappointedby Balfour,thegreatanti-HomeRuler,reportedthatIrelandhadbeenovertaxedbyEnglandtotheextentofmany millionsayear,contrarytoanother BritishTreatyabout1815.LordMcDonnell,thegreatIndianAdministrator,statedthathebelievedthatEngland'sdebttoIrelandunderthis agreementwasabout£350,000,000,and not£500,000,000,asstatedbysome people. Ireland'sdemandhasalwaysbeen forafreeandindependentParliament likeAustralia's.Theyneveraskedfor anyIrishmembertositintheEnglish Parliament.The42Irishmembersin theBillisEngland'splanofgetting overaConstitutionaldifficulty.Itwas insistedonbyMr.Asquith,becausethe EnglishParliamentretainedtheright (notclaimedbyAustralia)tolegislate incertainmattersforIreland,and thereforemusthaveIrishrepresentatives,as,accordingtotheunwritten BritishConstitution,therecanbeno legislationortaxationwithoutrepresentation.Anypersonwhocarefully readsthe1914Actmustadmititwas aninsulttotheIrishNation.SirEdwardCarsonproposedmanyofitsamendments,withtheobject,ashesaid himself,ofmakingitunworkable.

Shekeptalittlehuckster'sshopat thecrossroads,andwaswonderfullyactiveandwell-preserveddespitethe yearsthathadpassedoverherhead. Thislittlewaysideestablishmentof herswasalandmarkknownfarand wide.Thetownlandinwhichitwas situatewasremarkableonlyinsofar asitfurnishedherwithabackground. AtthementionofGlencoriggpeopleinstinctivelyconjuredupapictureof JaneAnn,justasapictureofthe strongly-markedindividualitywhois responsiblefortheprosperityofacertaintownintheEnglishMidlandsrises upbeforetheviewwheneverthename ofthattownismentionedinconversation T.thepeopleofthelocalityJane Arwassomethingmorethananin-.idual.Shewasaninstitution,and avenerableinstitutionatthat.Itwas popularlysupposedthatsheknew almosteverything,andcoulddoalmost anything.Ifinthecourseofthefairestdayshecasuallyremarkedthatit wouldprobablyturntorainbefore night,peoplehurriedhomeandwaited fortheweathertobreak.Asaninstanceofthepowershewieldedinthe neighbourhood,itneedonlybementionedthathalfadozenwordsfrom hersufficedtobreakthelocalpostmistressoffthehabitofopeningpeople'sletterswiththeaidofthesteam fromthekettle.Glencorigg,itshould beremarked,isaremoteneighbourhoodintheWest;anditsinhabitants were,andstillare,simple,credulous folkunspoiltbycontactwiththeouter world.
Allthingsconsidered,then,'itwas notsurprisingthatwhenyoungNed Lenihandecidedtosettledowninlife heshouldbetakehimselftoJaneAnn foradvice.Itwaseveningwhenhearrived.Shrovewasdrawingtoaclose; anditwasgenerallyadmittedthata slackermarriageseasonhadnotbeen experiencedformanyyears.
"Godsaveyou,JaneAnn,"Nedcalledout,ashecrossedthethresholdand closedthehalf-doorbehindhim.
JaneAnnturnedherheadslightly.
"Wisha,Godsaveyoukindly,Ned Lenihan,"shereturned."Comean' sitdownbythefire.Anynews?"
"Divilaword,JaneAnn.There isn'taha'porthstirrin'fromoneend ofGlencorrigtoth'other."
"Well,nonewsisgoodnews,they say.Isn'ttheweatherturnin'cold? Ihaven'tstirredfromthefireallday. Glorybe,'tisoldI'mgettin',Isuppose. "Yougettin'old,JaneAnn!Wisha, faithan'sowlyouaren't.Youare lookin'asyoungan'asbraveasever. Godblessyou."
JaneAnnsmiled;andshookher head. "I'mnotthefirstwomanyoutold thattoto-day,NedLenihan,"sheremarked. "'TisShrove,an'Iknow you'relookin'aroundforawife."
Nedthrewhimselfbackinhischair andregardedherinsilenceforafew moments.
"Well,howthedivildidyufindthat out,JaneAnn?"heenquired. "I'mold,Ned,an'oldpeopleknow alot,"sheanswered."Besides.wasn't Iyoungmyselfonce?"
Nedscratchedhisheadandlooked puzzled. "Ofcourse,womandear,"hesaid. "I'dforgottenthat.Well,tocuta longstoryshort,Iamthinkin'ofsettlin'down,thoughbetweenourselves. 'tisn'taboveanhoursinceitoccurred tome.ButhowwillIsetaboutgettin'thematchmade?'sezItomyself likethat.Wouldyoubelieveme,Jane Ann,Iwasatmywit'sendwhenall ofasuddenIthoughtofyou.'Faith, that'swhatI'lldo,'sezI.'I'llgo straightuptoJaneAnnan'besaidan' ledbyher.'" JaneAnnpickedupthetongsand putmoreturfonthefire. "An'moreshameforyoutosayit, NedLenihan,youthathaveagood motherathometoadviseyou,"she said. "Butshe'soldandfeeble,JaneAnn," Nedpleaded.
"Old,isit?Old,inagh!Why,I'm doubleherage."

ToNeditseemedthemostnatural thingintheworldtosay.Thestrong, masterful,albeitexceedinglyancient womaninwhosepresencehefound himselfwasabeingquiteapartfrom thegeneralityofhersex.
"An'doesyourmotherknowthat youcamehereformyadvice?"Jane Annenquiredafterapause. "Shedoes,begor,"Nedanswered. "An"tisdelightedsheisthatyou'll haveahandinthematchmakin'. Thereisn'tawomanintheparish,nor inthecountyaither,thatthinksmore ofyouthanmymotherdoes."
'Iknowthatthismanyaday.You haveagoodmother,Ned,an'youhad agoodfather,Godresthissoul,tillthe Lordtookhim." AfterthisJaneAnnwassilentfor amoment. "An'haveyouanyoneinyoureye?" sheasked.
"Well,Iwasthinkin'ofNorah Burkefromthebog,"Nedanswered. "Herfatherisanhonest,dacentman, an'sureanicerwomanthanhermother youcouldn'tmeet."
"Faith,trueforyou.'Tisagrand match'twouldbe-agrandmatchentirely.Well,Ned,youcanleaveitin myhands.I'lldomybestforyou, an'agoodrightIhave,forallbelong toyouwor(rindso'mine.I'llseewhat canbedonebeforetheworldismuch older."

AndbeforetheworldwasmucholderJaneAnndidseewhatcouldbe done.Indeedthatverynight,soon aftershehadfinishedsupper,sheput onherwhitefrilledcapandbestwoollenshawlandsetoutforBurkeOld Martinhimselfwasdozingbeforethe fire,butthebarkingofthedogwoke himup. "Yerra,JaneAnn,isthatyourself?" heasked,asherosetowelcomehis visitor."Sitdownhereinthecorner andrestyourself.Howintheworld areyou,neighbour?"
"Wisha,youcanputmedownamongthemiddlin's,MartinBurke,"Jane Annanswered."Howareallbelong toyou?"

JaneAnnleantbackinherchairand sankintoareveriewhileherhostpreparedthegrog.Inthelocalphrase Martin'swasa"warm"housefrom whichnooneeverwentawayhungry orthirsty.Itwaswellknownthat hehadashareofmoneybehindhimat thebank,andthefortyormoreacres hefarmedwereaswellstockedasany inthebarony.
"Here,takethisan'don'tletitget cold,"saidMartin.ashehandedhis visitoraglassofpunch.
Atthesightofthemeasureherhost hadfilledout,JaneAnnheldupherhandsandalmostcollapsed.
"MartinBurke,whatdoyoumaneat all,atall?"sheasked."Itistryin' tomakeadrunkardo'meyouareat mytimeo'life?Wisha,Godforgive you,that'sallIhavetosay."
"Yerrawhisht,woman,an'drinkit downwhilethegoodisinit,"counselledMartin."Goodhealth,JaneAnn, an'Godblessusall."
"Goodhealth,Martin,an'maythe Lordincreaseyourstore."
Inthecourseofherlongandnotuneventfulcareer,JaneAnnhadplayed manyparts,butneverbeforehadshe beencalledupontosustaintheroleof matchmaker.Shewasnotquitesure thatsheknewhowbesttosetaboutit. Beingawomanofresource,however, andhavingunlimitedconfidenceinherself,shewasentirelyfreefromthat nervousnesswhichsometimesspoiltthe performancesofmanyotherwisecap- ableplayers.
"Well,Martin,didyoueverinall yourborndaysrememberaslack. Shrove?"sheasked,aftershehadtakenthefirstsipofpunch.

JaneAnnroseandgatheredhershawl aroundher. "An'that'sthewayhetreateda widdawoman'schild,youtellme?" sheasked.
Martinnoddedhisheadandwatched thesmokefromhispipecurlupwards totherafters.
JaneAnnbitherlipandmovedtowardsthedoor. "Good-nighttoyou,MartinBurke," shesaid,andwithoutanotherword shewasgone.
NextdayonhiswayhomefrommarketNedcalledonJaneAnn. "Godblessallhere,'hesaid,ashe stoodforamomentonthethreshold. "An,you,too,"JaneAnnreturned rathercurtly.
"Isupposeyouhaven'tanynewsfor meyet,JaneAnn?"heenquired. JaneAnngavehimawitheringlook andpickedupawiperwithwhichshe proceededtodustthecounter. Nedwipedhisbrowwiththesleeve ofhiscoat. "DoyouthinkI'dbehereto-dayif Iwasguilty?"heaskedafterapause. "Nevermindnow,"sheanswered. "Sitdownthereinthecorner.Thekettleisontheboil,an'youknowwhere thebottleis.Lookaftertheshopfor mewhileIrundowntoMartinBurke widthenews." WhenshehadgoneNedlithispipe andmadehimselfaglassofpunch. "JaneAnnhasagreatregardfor me,"hesaidaloudashesettledhimselfmorecomfortablyinthehighbacked,sugganchair."Ah,she'sa greatoldwoman,isJaneAnn!" Theclockonthewalltickedoutthe secondsandthesecondsgrewintominutes.Beforehalfanhourhadpassed hewenttothedoortoseeiftherewas anysignofherreturning.

Hehadhopedthatthestoryofthe widow'sdaughterwouldnotgetabout. Truehewasinnocent,buttheguilty partywashiscousin,amanwhobore thesamenameashimself.Hisfather hadalwaysheldhisheadhigh,andso hadeveryLenihanhehadevermet. Nowtheoldnamehadbeentarnished, andhefeltthatallwhoboreitmust uearacertainshamebecauseonehad traileditinthemire. liethoughtofhiscousinwithloathingandcontempt.Hefelthecould nolongerclaimkinshipwithonewho hadsodishonouredahithertounblemishedname.
Whilehisthoughtswererunningin thisstrain,JaneAnnsteppedbriskly intotheroom. "Well,hereIamatlast,NedLenihan,"shesaid,asshedivestedherself ofherheavyshawl.
"DidyouseeoldMartin?"heenquired.
