Inspiteofthepresentrevolutionary chaos,theMonarchistsasaparty,are nottobeignored.Theirnumbersare fewbutpowerful.Thepartyismade upofthemembersoftheoldnobility, theclergyoftheoldGreekOrthodox Church,thelordsoftheland,thegreat capitalists,andsomeoftheoldofficials.Alldesirethereturnoftheold regime.Rodzianko,theformerpresidentoftheDuma,isoneoftheleaders ofthispartyhislastpublicappearancewasattheMoscowConference. Pourishkevitchistheothernotable leaderoftheMonarchists.Hewasa memberoftheDumaandleaderofthe famousBlackHundredwhichinstigatedtheJewishmassacres.WhenarrestedbytheBolshevikihesaid,"Iam aMonarchistbyprincipleandhopeto remainone,butsin*theRevolutionI havetakennoactivestepstocarryout anyofmyideas,buthopetodosoif electedtotheConstituentAssembly." Hewasreleased,andwasheadofa specialRedCrossdivisionatthefront. InconnectionwithPourishkevitchit isinterestingtonotethathewasone ofthosewhotook,partinthemurder ofRasputin. TheCadets. ThewordCadetcomesfromthelettersCandD,whichstandforConstitutionalDemocrat.Thepartycomprisesamajorityofthelandproprietors,capitalists,factoryowners,many oftheprofessionalclasses,andagood partofthestudents.TheplatformincludesaConstitutionalMonarchywith politicalreforms.TheCadetsbelieve inthedevelopmentofthecountrywith capitalismasabasisandindustryasa power,similartothegovernmentsof Europepriortothewar.Theyare alsoinfavourofdissolvingthepeasant communitiesexistinginRussiaand providingforindividualownershipof land.Theyareverymuchpro-war, eventotheextentofaggressivewarfare,desiringtheoccupationofConstantinopleandtheDardanelles;they alsoopposetheseccessionofanypart ofRussiaintoseparatestates.Their mostbrilliantleaderisMilliukoff, formermemberoftheDumaandMinisterofForeignAffairsduringthefirst ProvisionalGovernment:Macklakoff, Shingeroff,Lvoff,andothersbelongto thisgroup.

TheExtremeSocialRevolutionists, however,arenotcontentwiththepresentstridesoftheRevolution,and thereforedesiretheRevolutiontocontinuetoitslogicalconclusions;they areInternationNlistsandanti-Militarists,butarealsoagainstanyseparate peace. AtthesecondConventionoftheRussianSocial-DemocraticLabourParty heldinSwitzerlandin1903,theparty dividedintotwo-i.e.,theMensheviki (theword"Mensheviki"meaning'those whoareintheminority)andtheBolsheviki(thoseholdingthemajority.; itisalsointerestingtonotethatPlakhanoffandLeninweretheleadersof thedifferentsidesattheConvention. TheprogrammeoftheMenshevik'is oneofKarlMarxSocialism.Theybelieveinthecentralisationofcapital inallcountriesunderthetheorythat itsconcentrationwillintimemakethe prosucertheconsumer:thenthrotig.-1 ParliamentaryactionCapitalismcan easilybeabolished.Theyalsofollow theKarlMarxdoctrineofthecapitalisationofthelandinthehandsofa few,butrealisingthepresentneedsof thepeople,theycompromisetheirprogrammeandfavour,forthetimebeing, thedivisionofthelandamongthepeasants,thelandownersbeingcompen. satedbytheState.Theystandfor widereformsinindustriallaw,anddesireStatecontrolforStateindustry andmunicipalownershipincitiesand towns.Butwhenitcomestothe questionofwarthepartydiffersin opinionanddividesintothetwofollowingbranches:
1.Pro-WarParty(or"PartyUnity"), withPlakhanoff,theauthorandidealistatitshead.Plakhanoffwasthe formerleaderoftheentireparty..This partyfavoursthecontinuationofthe war,butonlyasadefensivemeasure, anddesiresnoannexationandnoindemnity.
The%lordBolsheviki,aswehavealreadypointedout,originatedatthe splitoftheSocialDemocratsin1903. Thewordmeantnothingmorethan majoritytilltheendoflastyear,when theybecamethepartyinpower.The Bolshevikidifferedverylittlefromthe SocialDemocratsatthetimeofthe divisionoftheparty,except,perhaps, thattheywerealittlemoreradically inclined.Astimepassedthisbecame moreandmoreevident,andasthe partydevelopeditbecomemoreand moreextreme,andnowthereseemsto beanunfathomablegulfbetweenthe two.TheiraimiscommunisticSocialism,whichtheyhopetoaccomplishbycontroloftheState.The mainpointintheirpresenttacticsisto continuetheRevolutiontoitsfullest extenttowardtheidealofCommunismandnottostopatanythinguntil thefullestdevelopmentpossibleisaccomplished.Theyfavourtheconfiscationanddistributionoftheland amongtheworkersandpeasants,with butonecondition,i.e.,thatthosewho holdthelandmustworkit.They wantmunicipalisationandnationalisationofindustry.Theyareanti-MilitaristsandInternationalists;theyhave triedtoforcepeaceupontheworldby allthemethodsandmeansintheir power,restingtheirmainhopesonthe synchronousactionoftheworkersof allwarringnations.Theywouldnot accepttheGermanpeaceterms, whichfavouredtheGermancapitalists; andaccordingtotheirprogrammewill onlymakepeacewiththeworkerson theprincipleofnoannexationandno indemAity.TheBolshevikialsodesiretheself.; determinationofnations,.andone,f theirfirstactswastoseparatethe ChurchfromtheState.Theirleaders,Lenin,Trotsky,andKrilenko,are somuchwrittenaboutatpresentthat nocommentonthemiscalledfor.AlthoughtheBolshevikinowholdthe centreofthestage,theyarebyno meansthemostradicalofthepartiesin Russia.InJanuarylastaprotest meetingwasheldinPetrogradagainst theBolsheviki.TheAnarchistsat thismeetingcalledtheBolsheviki"the newbourgeoisie."
Asusualtherewasalargerepresentationofthemembershipoftheabove societyattheweeklymeetingheldon lastMondayeveninginthehall,over the"Record"office.Manyvisitors fromthecountrywerepresent,and somewerecontributorstotheprogrammeoftheevening.ThePresident,FatherT.R.O'Grady,extended acordialwelcometoallvisitingfriends. TheHistoryReadiugfortheoccasion wason"TheNormanSettlementin Ireland,"afterwhichtheusualprogrammeofsongs,rectiationandstorytellingwasputforward..Mrs.Brown, avisitorfromthegoldfields,gaveapatrioticrenderingofthesong"RememberyouareIrish,"andMissMary Ryansweetlysang"Alittlebitof Heaven."MissHolmes,avisitorfrom Collie,wonheartyapplausebyherrecitation,"LordUllin'sDaughter."Mr, TomButlerwasingreatform,andas usualsetallhandsclappingandfilled everymouthwithlaughinggas-Mary Riley,alongwithhisever-greenMary Annmademanysidesachewithlaughter. Dohenylecturedon"IncidentsinIrish History,"andseveralofthemembers madesupplementaryremarks.Positivelythelastsocialanddance oftheseasonwilltakeplaceinthe HibernianHallonNovember6th. Everysympathiserandfriendofthe YoungIrelandersshouldbethereothersareboundtocome.

TheSocialRevolutionists,sometimes calledthe"Peasants'Party,"differ fromtheSocialDemocratsbybeing non-Marxists,andstandforthefurther developmentoftheoldexistingpeasantcommunes.Theyalsodesirethe confiscationoflandfromthelargeland holdersIntheindustrialfieldtheyare collectivists.Fromthispartyemerge suchnotablefiguresasCatherineBreshkovskyandKerensky.Chernoff,the formerMinisterofAgricultureinthe KerenskyGovernment,isleaderofthe

Thephilosophyandidealsofthese mostradicaloftheradicalsaremuch misunderstood.Briefly,theAnarchistsdifferfromtheSocialistsandBolshevikibynotbelievinginGovernment,andthereforerefusetotakepart inpolitics.Theydonotseekpolitical powerandobjecttothosewhodo.They desiretoformasocialsocietyinwhich "eachwillreceiveaccordingtohis needsandcontributeaccordingtohis ability."TheAnarchistsareallCornmunistsinprincipleandapartof themalsoSyndicalists.TheAnarchist SyndicalistsinRussiafollowtheexampleoftheFrenchSyndicalistsand theWelshminerSyndicalists.They takeoverandworktheirownfactories andinthiswaydirectlysharetheprofitsoftheirownlabour.Theywant productiveandconsumptiveco-operation,doingawaywithbothcapitaliec andmiddleman.Theydonotenter intopolitics,andarethereforelittle spokenabout,buttheycontrolandrun morefactoriesinRussiato-daythan mostofusimagine,andthereforetheir powermustnotbeignored.

Finally,theMaximalistsconsistofall thepartieswhichdesirethemaximum fromtheRevolution,andincludethe Bolsheviki,theMensheviki,Internationalists,theExtremeSocialRevolutionists,andtheAnarchists.

MorningandeveningdevotionsatAll HallowsChurchwerespecialisedina particularmannerlastweek,byreason oftheChildrenofMary'sannualretreat,whichwasconducted.byFather DeCourcey,C.SS.R.Thelargecrowd ofgirlswhichcongregatedonevery occasionwasindeedagrandandedifyingspectacle,andonewhichincited thegreatestadmiration,foritshowed thestaunchspiritoffaithprevailingafaithwhichwasreadytowillingly overcomesuchobstaclesastimeand distance,whichmany,infactthemajority,hadtocontendwith.Itwasa delightfulretreat,spentawayfromthe fitfulfeveranddizzyrapturesofthe worldinthequietandcalmofmeditationandprayer.Undoubtedlyit wasahappyprivilege,andonewhich thegirlsrespondedtowithdevoutappreciation.Alloccasionswereexceptionallywellattended,butthemagnificenceoftheirnumbersshowedupin wonderfulgloryonWednesdayevening, wheneverymemberwaspresentinthe uniformblueandwhiteregalia.The eveningwassetasideasasolemnityin honouroftheBlessedVirgin.On Thursdaymorningtheretreatwas broughttoaclose,andthegirlswere againpresentinregalia,allreceiving HolyCommunion.FatherDeCourcey'sfinallecturewasveryimpressive. Hepointedoutthatatlongestlifeis butshort,andurgedthemtoguard againstthedelusiveworthofthematerialthingsofthisworld,andtoever persevereincombatagainstthethree greatenemiesofthesoul-theworld, theflesh,andthedevil.Lifehereis quicklypastandover,deathstealing softlyonuseveryday,andfor'some ofusitwouldcomesuddenlyand withoutwarning.Yetitmattered.

TheeuchrepartyanddancearrangedbytheFremantleC.M.S.andChildrenofMaryastheopeningfunction oftheabovehall,tookplaceonTuesdayeveninglast.Notwithstanding thesultrynatureoftheweather,there wasalargeattendance,andamostenjoyableeveningwasspent.ThePresidentofthesociety,Mr.Wm.Hoey, inthecourseofashortspeech,said thatthemainreasonsoftheassemblagethateveningweretobringbeforetheCatholicsofFremantlethefact thattheywerenolongerwithoutaparishhall,andtohelptoreducethedebt thereon,whichamountedtoover£300. Consideringthefrequencyofstrikes, andtheintemperatevapouringsofboth theprophetsofCapitalandLabour,a fewwordsthisweekexplainingthe Catholicteachingonthisvexedquestionwillbenotinopportune: Wealth,honourablyacquired,mustbe respected.Wealthemployedinindustrialenterprisesprovidesworkforthe massesofmen,andgivesthemanhonourableexistence.Ifthewealthyman isatrueChristian,hewillconsiderhimselfthestewardofthethingshepossesses,andusethemforthebenefitof others.But,alas!selfishnessismore intenseanduniversalnow,itappears, thaneverbeforeintheChristianera. Therichregardthemselvesasabsolute proprietorsoftheirwealth,andasno longerresponsibletoanybodyforthe handlingoftheirmoney.Thecapitalistputshisconfidenceinhismoney andbelieveshimselfinvulnerableinhis wealth.Andfrequently'thepoor Workingmanhasnofreedomofchoice; hemusteitheragreetotheconditions oftheemployer,orhungerandstarve withwifeandchildren.Isthereno humanweaponwithwhichhemaydefendhimselfagainstacruel,greedy employer?Aslongashiscauseisjust, hehasarighttostrike;forhehasthe righttoworkornottowork.Strikes areasoldastheworld;theyhave been,likewar,inevitableinthecourse ofhistory.Atpresenttheyarefrequentlytheonlypowerinthehands oftheworkingpeopletorestrainthe despotismofcapital. mands.JohnMitchelltoldhishearersthathehadneverknownasympatheticstriketosucceed.Asarule, tradeunionsopposesympathetic strikes-infact,anystrikewhichcan beaverted.Strikesshouldbeprevented;or,ifcalled,shouldbespeedilysettledbyvoluntarytribunalsofarbitration,composedofemployersandemployed,intheirrespectiveunions. Shehasherprinciplesoftrainingand herstandardsofknowledge.Shemaintainsthateducationmusttakeaccount ofthenaturalandthesupernatural.If onlyskillofhandissought,onemay becomeveryproficientasawoodcarver,apainter,acabinet-maker,a shoeinakerorablacksmith.Thusmay beconstruedamachinethatwillturn outdies,molds,andothercontrivances, perfectenough,yetsomehowlacking thecharmofthehumanhandguided byintelligence.Educationwouldbe imperfectthatsoughttomakeaman proficientinmechanicalexecutiononly, orthatfittedhimtobealawyerora physicianhavingonlythematerial equipmentofhisavocation.Asthe soulinformsthebody,thesupernatural mustinformthenatural.ThisprincipletheChurchcriesoutbecauseof herfidelitytoherFounderandbecause ofherloveofman'swelfare.IfHeaven beman'sdestinyhemustmakeuse-in accordancewithreason,andtothe measureofhisabilityofthemeansat hand,toorderhislifeonearthinharmonywiththeDivineplan.Thebest interestsofcivilgovernmentalsodemandthis.Astateinwhichcitizens hadlostallrespectforthemorallaw couldnotendure,orenduringcouldnot servethepurposeofastate;asafactorynotguidedbyconscienceand amenabletonohigherauthority, eitherwouldgotopiecesorbecomean intolerabletyrannyforitsemployees. Takingthisposition,theChurchwelcomeseveryeffortmadeamongstus forthediffusionofknowledge;butshe ceasesnottocryaloudwarningofthe pitfallsunlessduerespectishadfor thesupernatural.Withtheardentaffectionthatburnsintheheartofevery faithfulCatholicforourflagandthe belovedcountryitsymbolises,thereis thedeepestsolicitudefortheadequate trainingofouryouth.Wearelookingforwardpatiently,steadily,fixedly tothedaywhenthefourwindsof Heaven,kissingthesun-gildedpeaksof thislandofliberty,shallproclaimher crowninggreatnesstoallthenationsof theearth.Themarchofeventsisirresistible.Thelawofgrowthisconstant'andbythatlawreadandpromulgated,itisdecreedthatthis"first landraisedfromoutthedeep,thelast tobefound,"oncebeheld,the"Starof Empire,"mustnotreverseitscourse. Westward,westwarditmusttraveluntilithascoveredeveryhillandplain andvalleyinthisbroadlandwithits palelight,andthentransfixedbythe beautyitshallgazeupon,poisedforeveruntilthedreadangelshalltrumpetthedoom,itshallhoveroverthis havenofpeace,blessingitbyitsgracioussmile.
worldhaseverconceived,immeasirablybeyondwhatithashithertoever known;andtomakethemthus,we wantthebestthateducationcangive us.Weshallnotbesatisfiedthat theyshallbecomecarefullyfittedand welladjustedpartsofsmoothrunning machines.Werejectwithscornthat theyshallbecomehighlydevelopedand well-fed,withalexpertanimals.The typeofAmericanthatweseeinthe futureisanup-standingman,having acomfortablehomeandaproperly nourishedbody,heandhischildren, freefromanxietyfordailysustenance; havingsufficientleisureforjustrelaxation;butmorethanthis,amanwith aconscience,satisfiedtohavehisshare anddesirousthateveryothershall havehis;amanwholoveslawandorderandkeepsthecommandmentsnot forconveniencesake,butbecauseitis eternallyright,andbecausenogovernmentcanendureonotherfoundation; amanwhofearsnofellowmortaland neednot,protectedbyhisownrectitudeandthereasonablelawofaland guidedbybenevolenceandjustice;but fearing,andaboveall,lovingGod, walkethinHiswaysuntotheend.This isconsummationdevoutlytobewished,butaconsummationimpossibleunlesstheeducationofouryouthbeaccompaniedbythesafeguardsofthe principlesofmoralityandvirtue,unlessthesuperitaturaldominatethe natural. Therewasatimewhentherelationshipbetweenthesupernaturaland naturalineducationwasclearlyunderstood.Irefertothetimewhenthe monasticschoolflourished.Imayadd thatthedemocracyofeducationwas neveratanyotherperiodmorestronglyemphasised.Studentsmetona basisofequality;favourbeingshown, ifshownatall,tothosefromthehumblewalksoflife,tothemostneedy whomthemonasteryencouragedtocultivatetheirtalents,recognisingthat otherwiserichestdowerwouldbewasted.Alimovedintheatmosphereof religionandfoundrefreshmentaswell ascultureinitsconsolations.Itsmusic waselevating,entrancing;itsstatuary thehighestspecimensofthesculptors' skill;itsstainedglasswindowswere inspiringandsoexcellentthatthey havenotsincebeenequalled;itsarchitecturehasbeenthemodelandthe despairofallsucceedingefforts.Virtueandlearningwalkedhandinhand. Theonlyregretattachingtothisperiod anditssystemwasthatowingtolack ofmanuscripts,thedifficultyoftravel, andperhapsthewarlikeconditionof thetimes,theadvantagesoftheseprivilegescouldnotbeextendedbeyonda comparativelylimitednumber;butit issurprisingneverthelesstoreadofthe largeenrollmentsofstudents,sometimesrunningintothethousands,at thesemedievalschools.Theinfluence carriedforthfromthemwastheforerunnerofEurope'ssubsequentdevelopment.
TheRelationshipBetweentheNatural andtheSupernatural. Inourownday,thereisatendencytoforgettherelationshipbetweenthe naturalandthesupernatural.IngovernmentthetheoryofJean-Jaiques Rousseau's"ContraitSocial"hasfound indifferentquartersconsiderablefavourandsupport.Thistheoryisbased ontheassumptionoftheperfectionof humannature.Theonlytroublewith thistheoryisthatitisnottrue.Human natureisremotelyperfectiblebutitis notnowperfect.Wehavenotand neverwillhaveastatusperfectonisacquisitae.butwehaveandwillalways continuetohaveastatusperfectonis acquirendae.Themillenniumhasnot dawned,andIamsorrytosaythere seemstobenoimmediateprospectof itsrushingdownuponus.Thisisunfortunate,butasweareconfrontedby afixedstate.astubbornfact,wewill havetomakethebestofthesituation andarrangeouraffairsaccordingly.The strugglebetweentheforcesofgoodand evilcontinues;andwhilewecouldardentlywishthatthedevilweredead wehaveampleevidencethatheisnot, butonthecontrary,isverymuch aliveandasGeneralissimoarrangeshis linesofattackwithconsummateskill.

Inproofofman'sinnatetendencyto evilanditsexcesses,formerlyitwas customarytoadducethecareersofthe ancientcruelconquerorssuchasCyrus, Darius,Xerxes,Alexander,Pyrrhus, andtherest.Ifevenasmallpart oftheoutragessaidtobecommitted inthepresentwararetrue,weneedno longergobacktoantiquityto;uoport ourthesis;itstandsestablishedandirrefutable,andwemayblushtorealise thatnotwithstandingourboastofprogress,thedegeneracyoftheancients survivesintheirdescendants.None ofthisdeclarestheperfectionofhuman nature;butitdoesproclaimfallenmen. TheInfluenceoftheChurchinCivilisation. TheChurchhasbeeninsistentonimpressingherspirit,thespiritofrighteousnessandreligionuponherchildren; andthisinfluencegoingoutfromher hasradiateduntoallthesonsofmen andintoeverystrataofsociety.Thus hasbeenbuiltupwhatweknowasour presentcivilisation.Withoutthisinfluenceweshouldlongsince,asforinstance,aftertheinvasionofthenortherntribes,havelapsedintobarbarism. Hercanonlawbecamethemodelof civillaw.Shebuilthermonastic schools,andhermonasteriesbecame lighthouses.Thenobilitywererude anduntutoredmentrainedinnopursuitexcepttheuseofarms,capable onlyofleadinginbattleorforay.Their contributiontoprogressneednotbe mentioned.Themonkspreservedliteratureandbuilttheuniversities, thoughungratefulcriticshaveforgotten it.AgainsteveryobstacletheChurch labouredforthecommonwelfareand topromotethedignityofthecommon man.Holidaysandholidayscameto havethesamemeaning.Thosemajesticcathedralswithalltheyimplyof communitylife,exquisiteart,andhighestconsecration,multiplied.Slavery wasunceasinglyandwithsuccesscontendedagainst.Woman'speerlessmodel andexemplar,thehumbleVirginof Nazareth,wassetonapedestalofbecominghonour,andwomanrecognising herowndignitywasprotecterinitby thenoblestchivalry.Theworkman hadhisguilds.Guidingandprotectingandheardaboveeverystormwas theonestrongvoice,thatofthe SupremePontiff;whileinthecalmand peacefullifeitutteredmessagesof kindnessandencouragement.Under thesecircumstancestheworkofcivilisationandeducation,synonymous terms,wentforward.Manwasnot abandonedtohimselfortohisown devicesofapretendedtranscendant nature;onthisscoretherewasnodelusion,andiftherehadbeen,wewould notbe-ableto-daytoabusethemonks ortotalkaboutthedarkages-we wouldbewalkingthroughprimeval forestsandfeedingonacornsandfish.

Therearecertainatheisticextremistsinresponsiblepositionswithinthe Labourmovementwhodisportthemselveslikelittlewanton.boys"who playwithdetonators(apologiestothe immortalbard).Thesepeople,mistakingapartforthewhole,thinkthat theyaretheLabourmovement,and thatitisthereforeanti-Christian,even asthemselves,andtheyproceedtojibe andsneeratChristianbelief,andmerit forthemselvesthereproachwhichthe ProphetOseeaddressedtothosewho "contradictthepriest."Now,the LabourmovementinAustraliaowes muchtotheCatholicpeople,andcan illaffordtoalienatetheirsupport. WhenanattemptwasmadeinVictoria afewyearsbacktopenalisemembers oftheCatholicFederationbymeansof theDuffy-McNamaraevictionclause, themistakewasnoticedalmostimmediately,andwiselyenoughwasnot perpetuated.TheLabourmovement inAustraliawouldbeapoorthingtodayifDr.Mannixhadnotsavedthe workersfromthecurseofconscription.TheLabourmovementinAustralia wouldbeapoormealy-facedconcern to-dayifCardinalMoranhadnotsaveditsomefourteenyearsago,bydefiningthedifferencebetweenrankcontinentalsocialismandtheaimsofthe AustralianLabourParty,whenitsenemieswereshouting,"Socialists,"as theysolatelyshouted,"I.W.W.," "Bolo,""Bolshevik,""SinnFein,"and astheynowshout"RedFlag,"and"for allthesecourtesies"(theCardinal'sand theArchbishop's,Imean),menlikethe editoroftheSydney"Worker,"confoundingtheChurchwiththechurches, andreckoningpriestandparsonas synonomousterms,sitdownandchurn outcolumnsofbat-eyedcriticism,that areworthlessthannothingtothe causewhichtheythinktochampion, thecausewhichtheCatholicBishops ofAustraliabless,andwhichtheyhave kepttheeditoroftheSydney"Work- er"andhisstafffreetoadvocate,the causeoftheworkers,theLabourmovement. WemustkeeptheLabourmovement Christian.Everythinggoodinit,and allitslegitimateaimsareinspiredby Christianity,andifanti-Christian blatherersaretobeallowedtoswing itfromthelinesofsanity,then,of course,beforeitistoolate,Catholics mustdecamp,anddothebestfor themselvesundersomeotherrooftree.Ifthedaycomeswhenmen mustchoosebetweentheirpoliticalpartyandtheirchurch,thenisthe timered-ripefortheformingofacentreparty,andifnecessaryitshallbe done.NoBishoporpriestinAustraliahassaidso,and"Ispeakasone lesswise,"but"IspeakofwhatIdo know."Suchamovementwillbefor thelaitytotakeup,andletushope thattheymayneverhavethenecessityforsuchaction.
H.E.B.'sarticleissucharice-pudding affair-allmixed-thatIfeeljustified inbeginningtoexamineit"anywhere forpreference,"soletuspulveriseit fromthebottomupwards.Firstofall, ourjournalistmixespriestsandparsons,thetwomostabsolutelydifferent thingswhichnatureorgracehaveever produced,andheendsuphisserendipitywithwhatwashailedbyourW.A. "Worker"asacleverepigram,which itcertainlyisnot,''Theirheads (priests'andparsons'),liketheircollarsareputonbacktofront.Now, H.E.B.fumedinapreviousparagraph about"conformingtocodesa-idcustoms,"buthebreaksouthereat priestsforbreakingthecustomof wearingcollarsinacertainway.But whoistoprovethatH.E.B.'scollaris notonbacktofront?Customsays thatH.E.B.'scollarisproperlydisposed abouthisneck,butwhoiscustom? Whatiscustom?Bywhatauthority doescustomdogmatiseastowhichis backandwhichisfront?Cannotthe priestandtheparson(savethemark) maintainthatitisH.E.B.'s,andallthe laymen'scollarsthatareonbackto front?AsG.K.Chestertonsays, somepersoncenturiesagoarbitrarily decidedthatthefrontwasthefront andthebackwastheback,but,how didthatpersonknow?Itaketheline ofargumentthatitisthelaymenwho weartheircollarsbacktofront,andI callonH.E.B.todisproveit,ifhecan. Idon'tthinkhecan,becausesomuch dependsonthatpersoncenturiesago, whodecidedforhimselfandforus(the arroganceofhim!thatthefrontis aswenowconceiveit.Ilabourthis unimportantpoint,justtoshowthat H.E.B.'swritingisaslooseashiscollar.Ifapriest'sheadwereonback tofront,andhiscollaralsoonbackto front,thatputsthembothintheright place,andtheclericaloutlookismaintainedoverthefrontofthecollareven asH.E.B.'soutlookwhich,occordingto himself,isarightclearoneindeed "Theofficialclergy,"saysH.E.B.. "areconstitutionallyformedforlookingthewrongway."DoesH.E.B.believethatDr.Mannixlookedthewrong way,andthatalltheBishopsand priests,oranyofthem,lookedthe wrongway,duringthetwoguiltycampaignstointroduceGermanmilitarism intoAustralia?Wherewouldthe Sydney'Worker"beto-day,andall theworkerswhoreadthe"Worker," andtheeditorofthe"Worker,"ifit hadnotbeenfoe'theclearvision,in therightdirection,andtogoodpurpos ofDr.MannixandalltheAustralian priesthood?TheSydney"Worker" shouldknowallthat;itdoesknowall that,anditisdishonestofittopretend ignorance.Theingratitudeofthe Sydney"Worker"hasaveryshort memoryindeed,ifitcanforgetfora minutewhatallconscriptionistsvainly deplore,theslayingtheGermanmonsterconscriptionbythepriestlyhand ofDr.Mannix,wholookedintheright directionoverthefrontofaRoman collar.
