Ontheotherhand,theBritishwere repulsedfromtheattackontheRedan withterribleloss,andcompelledto abandontheattempttocaptureit. TheseizureoftheMalakhoff,however, madetheRedan,whichitcommanded, untenableanylongerbytheRussians, whoquietlyevacuateditinthenight.

WhenJamesII.wasdrivenintoexile,thousandsofvaliantIrishsoldiers chosethesamefateratherthantake theoathofallegiance'toWilliamof Irange,therewasamongstthemagaltgentlemanofthenameofMacMahon.Likemostofhisbrother "WildGeese,"heneversawtheland ofhisbirthagain,butsettledanddied inFrance.Hedidnotachieveany greatdistinction;thereisnomention ofhim,sofarasIhavebeenableto discover,inO'Callaghan's"Historyof theIrishBrigadesintheServiceof France."Nevertheless,fromhimwas descendedamanwhorosetothehighestdignityinthecountryofhisadoption.
InthefutileattemptupontheRedan twoIrishmenifnotmore,intheBritisharmyperformeddeedSofdaring thatimmortalisedthem.DanMahoney,"arine,tallgrenadier,"wasthefirst mantorushintotheRedan."Hefell deadintheembrasure,byColonel Windham'sside,shotthroughthe heart,ashewasshouting"Comeon, boys,comeon!"andamereyouth namedMassey,alieutenantofthe19th Regiment,accordingtothefamous militarywriter,JamesGrant,"kept outintheopeninthehopeofinducingthesoldierstofollow.There, amidstthemostdreadfulfire,hestood witharecklesscouragethatexcited theastonishmentevenoftheenemy; hewasterriblywounded,butearned thesobriquetof'RedanMassey.' Leavingtheservice,heresumedhis studiesattheUniversityofDublin, wherethestudentspresentedhimwith amagnificentsword.'
ThefallofSebastopol_wasthus mainlybroughtaboutbyGeneralMacMahan'scaptureoftheMalakhoff,and forthisever-memorableexploithewas rewardedwiththeGrandCrossofthe LegionofHonouronSeptember22nd., afortnightafterthegreatachievement,andgiventhecommand.ofthe ReserveCorps. OnhisreturntoFrance,afterthe armistice,honourswereshoweredthicklyuponhim,andonJune24th,1856,he wasnamedasenator,andofferedthe highestmilitarycommandinFrance. Preferringactiveservicehowever,he declinedtheoffice,andathisownrequestwassenttoAlgeria.
In1808,onthe13thJuly,wasborn hisillustriousgreat-great-grandson,at thechateauofSully,nearAutun.MarieEdmePatrice'MauriceMacMahon wasthenamegiventotheinfant"Marie"inhonourofOurBlessedLady, asisstillthegreatcustominFrance amongourco-religionists.ofcourse,and "Patrick"and"Maurice"inmemoryof thedeadancestorandtheoldland fromwhichthefamilycame. In1859MacMahonwasmadecommander-in-chiefofthe2ndArmyCorps intheItaliancampaignagainstthe Austrians.CrossingtheTicinoRiver onthe3rd,andonthe4tharrivedin timetotakepartinthebattleof Magenta.

pointedGovernor-GeneralofAlgeria, whereheremaineduntilthefatalyear 1870,whenhewasrecalled,inJuly,to takecommandoftheAlsacearmy,on theoutbreakofthewarbetween FranceandPrussia.AfterthedownfallofNapoleonI.in1815,Francewas obligedtoresigntheRhineprovinces, towithdrawhereasternboundary partlybehindtheMoselle,thoughshe wasallowedtoretaintheancientGermanprovincesofAlsaceandLorraine. Thispartitionofterritoryrankledin bothFranceandGermany.France thenhelpedItalyagainstAustria, helpedtheItalianstoexpelAustria inthemainfromItaliansoil.Thiswar weakenedAustriaconsiderably,and Prussiatookadvantageofherweaknessandbecamethedominantpower inGermany.France,thereupon,was alarmedandjealous,andpouncedupon thefirstpretexttodeclarewaronGermany.ItisdoubtfuliftheEmperor NapoleonIll.himselfwantedtogoto war,buthewashurriedintothat coursebytheclamouroftheFrench people. CrossingtheGermanfrontierby Thionville,onthe28thJuly,1870,the French"ArmyoftheRhine,"asitwas called,undertheEmperorhimself,won thefirstbattleofSaarbrucken,onthe 2ndofAugust,andtookthattown, anunfortifiedone.MarshalMacMahonwasnotpresentthere,butwas moretothesouth,justatthepoint wherethethenFrenchfrontiertouchedtheRhine,nearthetownofWeissenburg,whichthenbelongedto France.Twodaysafterthetakingof Saarbrucken,theGermans,advancing ingreatforcefromLandau,intheir newly-acquiredRhenishprovinces, alongthewestbankoftheRhine, whichthereforetheyhadnottocross inthefaceoftheirfoe,madeamost furiousonslaughtuponWeissenburg. GeneralAbelDouaycommandedthe 8,000Frenchinthetown,MacMahon beingsituatesomefifteenmilesaway withthemainbodyatavillagecalled. Woerth.TheGermanswereinoverwhelmingnumbersandcarriedallbeforethematWeissenburg.General AbelDouay,inordertoinspirehis troopswhenhesawthemfallingback beforethepressure,shothishorseand deliberatelywalkedtowardstheGermans.Hismenralliedatthesight andpressedforward,butonlytofall inheapsundertheGermanfire,and GeneralDouayhimselfwasshotdead. MarshalMacMahonhurriedupfrom Woerthandgavebattletothevictors. Hehadwithhim35,000men,includingtheremnantofDouay'sforce,demoralisedbytheheavydefeatthey hadalreadysuffered."Oneofthe bloodiestbattlesonrecord"atthat timeensued.TheMarshal's"courage wasalwaysconspicuousuponthefield, butthetwotoonenumericalsupenorityoftheGermanstriumphed."He wasobligedtofallbackfromthebank oftheRhine,hislossinkilled,woundedandprisonershavingamountedto 11,000.Hewouldnotretreatuntilhe sawthattoremainmeantthedestructionofhisentireforce,andhewas nearlyexhausted,havingbeenfifteen hoursinthesaddle!TheGerman casualtiesatWoerth,however,could nothavebeenlessthanhis,andwere probablymore.MacMahon'sopponentwastheCrownPrinceofPrussia. AfterhisterribledefeatatWoerth, theMarshalconductedhisretirement soablyastowintheunqualifiedadmirationofalltheGermantacticians, aswellasthatofhisowncountry.He was250milesfromParis,and,instead ofmakingforNancyorMetz,as everyonesupposedthathewould,he retreatedtowardsChalons.Thushe completelyoutwittedhispursuers,for Chalonsisonlyabout70milesfrom Paris,andthemarchwasamostdiffficultone,"involving,withallthe tours,adistanceofnearly250miles, forhedidnotmakeadirectcourse." Saarbruckenonthesamedayasthe battleofWoerth,thatisthe6thof August.Heeffectedajunctionwith MacMahonatBar-le-Duc,andgavethe Marshalthesupremecommandoftheir unitedforces.MacMahontookupan excellentpositionforthedefenceof thecapitalatthedefilesoftheArgonneandtheconcentriclinesofthe Champenoiserivers.Incrossingthe Moselle,theFrenchturnedupontheir pursuersnearMetzandwonatemporaryvictory.TheMarshal'splanswere however,upsetbyordershereceived fromtheMinisterofWar,Montauban, CountdePalikao,whoinstructedhim tolinkuphisarmywiththatofMarshalBazaine.Heundertooktheoperationagainsthiswill.Underhim nowwasaforceofabout120,000men, butthisapparentlymightyforcewas badlyshakenbytherapidsuccession ofterriblereversestheFrencharms hadsustainedeverywhere-wasina stateofdreadfuldisorganisationand demoralisation.Moreover,itwas fatiguedbyitsincessantmarchingand brusheswiththePrussiancavalry, whichhungeveruponitstraces. Broughttoastandbytherapidly on-pressingandoverwhelmingcolumns ofthefoe,MacMahonturnedatbay outsidethesmallfortifiedtownofSedan,"ontherightbankoftheMeuse. Thepositionwasstrong,althoughthe townwascommandedbycertain heightswhichthepursuingGermans seized.BythisstandMacMahonwas abletogivehiswearytroopsamuchneededunbrokenday'srest.Atfive inthemorningofthenextday,the 1st.ofSeptember,inadensefog,he gavebattletotheGermans,commandedbyKingWilliamofPrussiainperson.WiththePrussianmonarchwas thefamousCountBismarck,theGermanChancellor,"themanofbloodand iron." TheFrenchhaddrivenbackthe 13avarians,whenthefoglifted,andthe Prussiansfromtheheightswereable toconcentrateatremendousartillery fireupontheiralreadyexultingfoemen. MacMahonwasmostpopularinthe countrypartsofFrance,throughwhich hemadeasuccessfultour,buthecontrivedtoalienatetheRepublicanPartystillfurther,andGambetta'sopposi- tiontohisadministrationathngth broughtaboutacrisis;thePresident wasobligedtoacceptaRepublican Ministryin1877.Twoyearslatera motionwasbroughtforwardforthe supercedingofallanti-Republicangen- eralsandofficials.Itwascarried,and onthatMarshalMacMahonresigned hishighoffice.ThiswasonJanuary 30th,1879. Heretiredintoprivate life,andwassucceededbyM.Jules Grevy,who,likeGambetta,hadbeen oneofthemostactivedefendersof Parisduringthatcity'ssiegebythe Germans.

Followingarecentdiscussioninthe. LegislativeAssemblyofQueenslandon internmentsinthatState,theissueof -Hansard"wassuspended,andthe GovernmentPrintingOfficeofthat Statewastakenpossessionofbythe military.
Inmakingtheannouncement,tl.e ActingPrimeMinister(Mr.Watt)said:
"OnJuly25Iwasadvisedthat statementshadbeenmadeinthe QueenslandLegislativeAssemblyon July23reflectingonthetreatmentof IrishandGermaninternees,thepublicationofwhichtheGovernmentconsideredwouldjeopardisethewarinterestsofAustralia.ActionWasat oncetakenbytheGovernment.IcommunicatedwiththePremierofQueensland(Mr.Ryan)direct,andthecensorauthoritytookstepstoprevent publication.Manytelegramspassed betweenMr.Ryanandmyself,and, meanwhile,theissueof'Hansard'was suspended.Whilethesecommunicationswerepassing,themilitarytook possessionoftheQueenslandGovernmentPrintingOffice.Thematter was'finalised'latelastwee!:,when 'Hansard'wasissuedwiththeobjectionablereferencesdeletedbythecensor.'
Areportofthediscussionappeared inthe"Argus"ofJuly25.Mr.CuthbertButlermovedtheadjournmentof theHousetodiscussthematterofcertaincitizensofQueenslandhavingbeen removedtoNewSouthWales,andimprisonedbytheCommonwealthauthorities.Mr.Ryan,inexpressing himselfentirelyinaccordwiththemotion,saidthatheblamedtheCommonwealthGovernmentforitsadministrationofthe,WarPrecautionsAct.They. allknewthewayinwhichthesensorshiphadbeenusedformattersaltogetheroutsideofwarmatters. Thisincidentrecallstheraidbythe militaryauthoritiesonthesameoffice onNovember26,1917,duringthereinforcementsreferendumcampaign, whensomethousandsofcopiesof "Hansard"containingareportonthe militarycensorshipwereseized.The Premier(Mr.Ryan)atonceprotested tothePrimeMinister(Mr.Hughes) againstwhathetermedinvasionofthe rightsofasovereignState.Mr.Hughes repliedthatthepfiblicationwasa "Hansard"onlyinname,andwasineffectano-conscriptionpamphlet,teemingwiththegreatestmisrepresentation, andcontainingstatementscalculated notonlytomisleadtheelectorwithregardtohisvoteonDecember20following,buttoseriouslyprejudicevolnotaryrecruiting.LegalproceedingsI followed,butwerenotcarriedtoa conclusion.--`'Argus."

EarlBeauchamp,aformerGovernor ofNewSouthWales,andamemberof theAsquithCabinetwhenwarbroke out,presidedonWednesdayatameetingattheEssexHall,inLondon,of thesupportersoftheMarquisofLansdowne,whoselettertothepressinDecemberlast,advocatingarestatement oftheAlliedwaraimsandtheabandonmentofeconomicwarfare,createda sensation.Thefollowingletterfrom LordLansdownewasreadtothemeeting:"Weareabouttocommencethefifth 'yearofthewar,andweshallnext weekre-affirmoursolemnresolvenot todesistuntilwehaveachieveda peacewithhonour.Ihaveestimates ofthecasualtiesamongstthebelligerentarmies.Thetotalis30.000,000.ofwhom7,000,000havebeen killedand6.000,000takenprisoneror missing.Thecivilisedworld'sresourcesarebeingdrained,apartfrom theexhaustionofournationalwealth, thelossesofshippingtonnage,and thelamentablelossesoflife.Itis estimatedthatthedecliningbirthratehasrobbedtheEuropeanbelligerentcountriesof12,500,000potentiallives.TheRegistrar-Generalsays thateverydayofthewarinvolves thelosstoEuropeof7,000potential lives.Thewarhasfilledthegraves Orandemptiedthecradles.

ThegeneralinterpretationofMr. LloydGeorge'sspeechonJanuary6, 1918,towhichLordLansdownerefers,wasthatitwasadirectinvitationtotheCentralPowerstojoinin apeaceconferencebasedontheprinciplesofnoannexationsandnoindemnities.Threedayslater,President Wilson,followingtheexampleofMr. LloydGeorge.laiddownthewaraims oftheUnitedStatesandtheconditionswhichheconsideredessentialto a"justandstablepeace"inamessage toCongress.IngeneralagreementwiththeprinciplesenunciatedbyMr.Lloyd George,butevenmorecomprehensivelyandmoredefinitely.thePresident putforthapeaceprogrammeforthe world,andchallengedtheCentralPowerstosay,withoutconfusionorambiguity,whatweretheirrealwaraims andwhatconditionsofpeacethey wouldaccept.Ilerepeatedhisdemand fortheformationofaleagueofnations toenforcecovenants,andlaiddown,as necessaryprinciplesofpeace,disarmamentorreductionofarmaments,equalityoftradeopportunities,theevacuationandrestorationofoccupiedterritories,theabolitionofsecretdiplomacy,recognitionoftherightsofnationalitiestodeterminetheirdestiny,the permanentopeningoftheDardanelles, andasettlementofthefutureofGermancoloniesbasedonadueregard forthewelfareofthenativepopulation. SpeakingintheHouseofCommons onJanuary18,Mr.LloydGeorgesaid thatitwasevidentthattherewasno readinessonthepartofGermanyto treatforpeaceonanytermsthatcould possiblybeacceptabletoGreatBritainand'herallies.AtthetimeGermanywassufferingfrom"swelled head,"havingjustforcedaseparate peaceonRussia.
'Toavoidadishonourablepeacewe arereadytofighttothebitterend, butthetragedyofthesefiguresis apparent.Itwouldbecriminalto continuethewaradayafteranhonourablepeaceiswithinreach.The desireforpeaceappearswidespread intheenemycountries,butweapparentlyaresofaraseverfromthe end.Thetideofcarnageanddestructioncontinuestoflow.Occasionallyarayofreasonablenessilluminatesthegloom,onlytobefollowedbyrecriminations. "Whatstandsintheway?Idonot desiretoembarasstheGovernment, butIfeelitmydutytogivetheGovernmentachanceofaffordingthe countryreassuranceandenlightenment.Iamconvincedoftheexistenceofadeep-seateddesireforafurtherexplanationoftheconditionson whichwearepreparedtoopenadiscussionleadingtopeace. "Havewereallystatedourtermsin unmistakablelanguage?Admittedlythereareseriousdifficultiesinforululatinganddefiningthecardinal points,Wemustmakesurethat weareinline,notonlywithourallies,butwiththedominions.We mustfaceracialandgeographical problemsofsurpassingintricacy.
Whatistheuseoftheinter-Allied. conferencesandtheImperialCabinet iftheyhavefailedtoco-ordinatethe aimsoftheAllies?TheAlliedNote ofJanuary10,1917,hasbecomeobsoleteowingtoRussia'sdefection.
Thepeopleareaskingwhetherno canversationscanbecommencedbeforetheCentralPowerssignifytheir acceptanceofthewholeofthedemandsofwhichMr.LloydGeorge gaveanoutlineinhisspeechatthe TradeUnionConferenceatWestminas'steronJanuary6last.
'Lieut.-GeneralSmuts(memberofthe WarCabinet),inhisGlasgowspeech onMay17,gavethecoupdegrace tothetheoryofthe'knock-out blow,'andpointedthewaytoatrue conceptionofthesortofvictorywe regardasindispensable,aimingnot merelyatmonetarysuperiorityin thefield,butalsopermanentsecurity,underwhichitwouldbepossible eventuallytorealisePresidentWilson'sideals.
"Iamnotpositivethatwehavereachedthestageatwhichthereisaprospectofpreliminaryagreementonessentialpointsandprofitableconversations.butthereareabundantindicationsthatsuchoccasionswillpresentthemselvesinthenearfuture. Letusbepreparedtousethemina reasonablespirit,atleastgivingour adversariesachanceofshowing whethertheiroverturesaresincere."
Londonnewspapers,exceptthe "DailyNews"(Radical),expressthe opinionthatLordLansdowne'sletteris inopportune,andwillnotassistina settlement. TheAlliedNotedatedJanuary10, 1917,mentionedbyLordLansdowne. wassentinreplytoPresidentWilson. whohadnotthenenteredthewar.The followingwerelaiddownasessential termsofpeace:"TherestorationofBelgium,Serbia, andMontenegro. OneofthenewV.C.heroesisaparishionerofSt.Mary's-Lance-Corporal ThomasLeslieAxford(JackAxford). Rememberhisname,Catholicsofother places;itisonemoretoaddtothe longlistofCatholicheroes,whohave gainedthehighestdistinctions,while unworthypeacedisturbershavebeen traducingthemandtheirreligion,and repeatingwithdamnableiterationthat Catholicsaredoingnothingin"thisswore." WecongratulateMr.andMrs.Walter Axford,whosesoldiersonshave broughtsuchaweightofdistinctionto Bourke-street,Kalgoorlie(forasecond son,Harry,hasreturnedwithhonourablewounds),andthosewhowishto showtheirappreciationforwhatthis familyhasdonetokeeptheBritishflag flyingforanotherthousandyears,can dosoinaverypracticalwaybyrememberingthemeaningofthesignin Hannan-streetthatshowsthewayto theworkshopofHarryAxford,electrician. Wellington,ofthiscity,preachedon "Dr.MannixinhisSeditiousScarlet."
Thespeechat'GlasgowofLieut.GeneralSmuts,fromwhichLordLansdownequotes,containedthefollowing passages:"Therehasbeenagreatdealofunhealthyandunwholesomepacificism.I haveoftenmetpacifistfriendswho havebeenmisledbyfalsesentiment,by afalsejudgmentastoGermanaims. Oneofthemostimpressivefunctions
ithasbeenourlottowitnessduring ourassociationwiththispaperwasthe openingofthenewCathedralatGeraldton,whichtookplacelastSunday. Leavingthisoffice,onThursdayevening,wejourneyedtothePortwhich opensitsarmstothegreatestfuture intheGoldenWest.Afterapause atDongarra,wheretheDominicanSistershavewiselyspreadtheirtents,we proceededbymotorthroughtheGreenoughfiatstotheCathedralCity.Ofthe journey,andofSt.Dominic'smagnificentoutpostweshalllaterwrite,but everythingwesawonthewayencouragedustomakeanactoffaithinthe futuregreatnessofGeraldton.From Fridaynight,which,bytheway,is shoppingnightthere,untilSunday morningwebusiedourselvestaking noticeofthethingswhichwewitnessed.WeweremetatGreenoughby HisLordshipBishopKellyandMgr. Graber,V.G.Afterabriskrun,we reachedGeraldtonat5.30pan.Sundaycame.andwithitglorioussunshine,whichdispelled,andmadeus forgettheharshwindsoftheGreenoughFlatsandoftheBay.Itwasa grandday,andGeraldtonDiocesemade itagaladay.Peoplecamefromhundredsofmilestowitnessineverysense thegreatesteventinthehistoryof thenorthcountry.Squatters,andmillers,drovers,andAustralianlifeinevery shape,wererepresented,andeverything indicatedanunforgettablelandmark inthehistoryofthediocese.There wassomethinguniqueaboutthewhole function.

ThegreatmindbehindtheCathedral,andtheonewhichgaveconcrete formtothepotentialideasresidingin themindofGeraldton'sworthypioneer Bishop,wasthatofFatherHawes,a priest,andacitizenwhosenamemust beeverintimatelyassociatedwiththe historyofCatholicprogressinGeraldton.FatherHaweswasatonetime aChurchofEnglandclergyman.But, throughthemysteriousProvidenceof God,hecamebacktotheFaithofhis Fathers,andtheAlmightymadehim aninstrumenttowidenstillthefrontierswhichhavetheircentreamidthe SevenHills.Heis.trulyamarvellous man;heisagenius,andlikealltruly greatpeople,thecornerstoneofhis greatnessishishumility.Hehaslost himselfinhiszealtoerectatempleto thelivingGod-togiveHimafitting tabernacleamongthepeopleofGeraldton-andonefromwhichgreatwork willbedoneforthegreatergloryof God.WehaveseenFatherHawesamonghiswillingbandofworkers-amodernSt.Joseph,devotinghisraretalents andhiswonderfulfaithtotheservice ofthebestandmostgenerousofMasters.TheCathedral,builtmainlyby hishands,isanactofFaith-aprofessionthereof-instoneandmortar-in art.Itisanuniquestructurewhich, whenfinished,willbeamongthefinest 'ecclesiasticalpiles,notonlyinthis State.butintheCommonwealth. TheDay. Theopeningceremonybeganat10 o'clock.Longbeforethathourgreat crowdswereassemblingnightothe newCathedral.Atnineo'clockthe bellsentoutitsfirstmessagefrom thetower.Theblessingbeganatten o'clock,theRightRev.Dr.Kellyofficiating.TheProcessionwasformed attheSacristy,andincludedtheArchbishopofPerth,theLordAbbotof NewNorcia.RightRev.Mgr.A. Finally,dearbrethren,whenyour children,teryourchildren'schildren, askyouinthewordsofJosue,asthey pointtothisvenerableshrine,"What meanthosestones?"youwilltellthem thatwhenthisnewDioceseofGeraldtonwascreatedin1898,andenintrepidsonofthesoilchosentobeitspioneerBishop,therewasthenonlyan old,ricketyandunsightlychurchhere inGeraldton,unworthytobecalleda Cathedral,unworthyoftheaugustsacredfunctionsthathavetobecarried outinaCathedralChurch.Youwill tellthemthatthoughinterritorial extentthisnewDiocesewasimmense, inresourcesandequipmentitwaspoor; thathardshipsanddiscouragements weremany,andhumanconsolations few.Youwilltellthemhowyoiir goodBishopfacedandtriumphedover theinitialcomplexdifficultieswithan undauntedspiritoffaithandabrave heart.Howthroughthedearthof priestshehadregularlytodischargethe pastoraldutiesofanordinarypriest, makinglong,toilsomeandfatiguing journeysonlandandseainorderto breakthebreadofLifeandtobring theconsolationofourholyreligionto 'thedistantmembersofhisflock,al-
mostspirituallyabandonedinthevery outposts,ofcivilisedlife.Youwill tellthemoftheunerringinstincthe displayedfromtheverystartinprovidingtheyoungwithasoundand thoroughCatholictrainingintheCatholicschool,inordertokeepthefaith intactanduntarnishedintheflock confidedtohiscare.How,forthat purpose,heseatbandafterbandof thosenoble,cultured,self-sacrificing religiousofthePresentationandDominicanSisterhoodstothedifferent centresofpopulation,where,withthe self-denyingspiritandzealofapostles, theykeptthefaithofourfather:,fresh andintelligentandwarminthehearts oftheyoung,trainedtheminall branchesofsecularknowledge,in pietyandvirtue,andborealoftin manypartsoftheauriferousdesert,the torchofhumanlearningaswellasof DivineFaith,seekingnorewardbut thattheirnamesshouldbewrittenin theBookofLife.Youwilltellthem then,howHisLordship,aftersupplyingthespiritualneedsofthevarious congregationsscatteredthroughthe vastareaoverwhichheheldjurisdiction,keenlyfeltthewantofaCathedralChurchinGeraldton.How,duringtheprogressofthegreatestwar theworldhaseverseen,despitethefinancialstrainandburden,andthedepressinginfluenceofthattitanticstruggle,hecourageouslylaidthefoundation stoneofthisnewCathedral.howthe workwasunostentatiouslybutunswervinglycarriedonunderthesuperintendenceandinspirationofhimwhose invaluableaidProvidencesentatthe opportunemoment,FatherHawes. Pow,atlast,itwasblessedandopenedwithintheOctaveofOurLady's grandfeastoftheAssumption,under theprotectingmantleofherwhowas thisCathedral'smostgloriousPrototype.Howitwasfilledtooverflowingonthatmemorableday;howthe soundofsacredsongandmusic,like untothatofthesilvertrumpets.which thelevitesblewatthededicationof Sion'stemple,thrilledtheheartsof allwithjubilation,joy,andgratitude. Howitstandshere,aconcreteexpressionofthatreverencewhichNature's lawcommandsthecreaturetoDayto theCreator;ofthezealwhichBishop, priests,andpeoplehaveforthetemple whichtheLordofHosts,theGiVer ofallgoodgifts,deignstodwellin. Howitstandshereanoblesymbolof theHolyCatholicFaithwhichChrist cameonearthtopreachandtoestablish,whichjoinsuswhobelongtothe "householdoffaith"togenerationsof truebelieversineveryageandclime. How,itstandshere,worthilylinking bythegrace,beauty,andelegance withwhichithasbeenwreathedbythe artisticmindthatdesignedit,worthily linkingtheaspirationsoffaithinthis newlandwiththeclassicachievments andperfectionsoftheagesoffaithin theold.Hereitwillstandtogivean abidingtestimonyofyourfaith,the testimonyofthepeopletothepeople, writtenwithhammerandchiselonenduringstone.

TheArchbishop,whowasloudlyapplauded,inacknowledgingtheaddress ofwelcome,thankedhisLordshipfor thekindlyreferencestohim.Hehad doneverylittleinconnectionwiththe ceremony,andheesteemeditagreat personalprivilege-aservicethatgave himintensedelight-to15epresentat thededicationoftheCathedral.Besides,hispositionasMetropolitan markeditadutyonhispart,andto renewacquaintanceinGeraldtonafter anabsenceof18years'enhancedthe pleasureofthevisit.Theerection oftheCathedralwasaworkallCatholicsshouldfeelintenselyproudof. Throughthepreachingandinstructionwithinitswalls,theCathedral wouldbeamagnettodrawCatholics to,God'sworship.HeassuredDr. Kellythatthevisitwastohimasource ofgreatpleasure.Hewarmlyappreciatedtoothegreatkindnessofthe Sistersandthechildren,especiallyfor thetreataffordedbytheconcerton Fridayevening.Hehadreadsomewherethatthesweetestandpleasantestthingswerethosewhichwerecasualandunexpected,andtheconcertand theexcellencethereofhelpedtosweetenexistence.Hewouldgobackto Perthverychastenedandhumbledby theimpressionoftheveryfinelineof ecclesiasticalbuildingsinGeraldton. TheyhadnothingequaltoitinPerth. TospeakofthegreatworkofFather Ilaweswouldbetowoundhishumility.Hehadachievedagreatwork, andwasaninvaluableassettotheGeraldtoncommunity.Hehopedthat thepriest-architectwouldsoonpaya visittoPerth,andseewhatmightbe donewiththeirownCathedral.

LastSundaywasTHEDAYinthe historyoftheNor'-WestPort.The foundationoftheCatholicFaithmight havebeenlaidseventyyearsago,but itwascalledupontosupportvery largeproportionslastSunday.His Grace,ArchbishopClune,C.SS.R.,by thegracefulofficiencyforwhichheis sowellknown,infusednewheartand lifeandvigourintotheGeraldtonCatholiccommunity.HeevencommunicatedhisownVirileoptirnismtoc'ne. TheNave. Oneithersideisanarcadeofsemi-circulararchessuportedonplain massiveroundpillarsof ninefeetincircumference. Theseareofasimilar charactertothearcades oftheNormanNaveof MalvernAbbeyChurchin England,andthoseofthe beautifulruins,800years old,ofBoyleAbbey.Roscommon.Thearcades carrya"clear-story"of narrowround-headedwindows,deeplysplayed.A plainbutmassive"opentimberroof"ofKing-post constructionspansthe nave.Thetimberisjarrah,treatedwithonecoat ofrawoil,butunvarnished.Theexterioriscoveredwithjarrahshingles. Theroofingofallthe restoftheCathedralwill eventuallybeofconcrete withawater-proofcement finish.Butbeyondthe easternarchspanningthe Nave,allisincomplete. Thevisitorbeholdsonlya low(shed-like)temporarywoodenroofsupport. edinthecentreonfour roughtree-trunks,wherea loftydome,45feetindiameter,isintendedtorise overthecentraloctagon infrontoftheHighAltar. Wherethetemporarywoodensacristyis,willbeeventuallytheNorth Transept,containingtheAltarofthe SacredHeart.TheNorthTranseptdoorswillopenoutintoacolonnaded porchraisedonabroadflightofsteps makinganimposingentrancefromCathedralAvenuedirectlyintothecentre oftheChurchundertheDome.
Inachapelontheeastsideofthe SouthTransept(thewallsofwhichare onlypartiallycarriedup)isthealtar ofOurLadyHelpofChristiansPatronessofAustralia.Oppositethisaltar isthelittlegabledshrineofOurLady StaroftheSea,withafigureofthe BlessedVirginappearingintheclouds toavesselindistress.Beforethis shrinehangsagildedmetallampin theformofaship,presentedbyatravellerasan"ex-voto"offeringinthanksgiving,toMary,StaroftheSea,fora safepassagethroughtheHunsubmarinezone.

WeregrettorecordthedeathofMrs. MichaelClifford,ofGilliminning,which tookplaceonthe11th.inst.Thedeceasedlady,whowasinpossessionof herwontedhealthuptonearlytwo yearsago,washighlyrespectedbyallwhoknewher.ShewasperhapsbetterknowninPerthsomeeighteenyearsago,whenherhusbandwasformerly theproprietoroftheAustralianHotel inMurray-street.Inthesecondyear ofthecenturyshe,withherhusband andfamilymadetheirhomeinDay Dawn,duringaperiodofnearlyfive years,andthegreatrespectinwhich shewasheldwastestifiedtointherepresentativesfromthatfar-offtownshipwhopaidtheirfinaltributetoher memoryattheRequiemMasswhich wascelebratedintheCathedralofthe ImmaculateConception,Perth,andat thegravesideinKarrakatta,onthe 13th.inst.Herhealthgraduallydeclineduntilafewmonthsago,when signsofanearlydissolutionwereonly twoapparenttobemistaken.Fullof hopeasregardsthefuture,andfully resignedinherpatientlyborneillness, shecalmlyandtrustfullywaiteduntil theendcame,afteranearthlysojourn of48years.NumbersoflettersofcondolencewerereceivedbyMr.Clifford, whichborewitnesstothefactthatshe hadbeenadevotedwife,aloving

Afewmonthslater,inthecourseof anexploratoryramble,afavourite amusementofmine,throughoneof thosenetworksofobscurestreetswhich liebetweenthegreatthoroughfaresof London,Icameuponastreetwitha vaguelyfamiliarname.Istrolled alongtryingtorecallwhereandin whatconnectionIhadheardofthis streetbefore.Presentlyitallcame backtome;ofcourseitwasthestreet towhichmystrangetravellingcompaniondiresctedmeinthepaperof instructionswhichwashispartinggift. Itookoutmypocket-book,andsought foritamongstacollectionofoldletters.Fortunatelyithadnotbeendestroyed.Nowitwasonlyhumanthat underthecircumstancesIshouldwish tosatisfymycuriositytotheextentof findingout`whethertherewasreally suchanaddressasthatwhichthe papercontained,andwhetherinthe caseofitsbeingtrue,theproprietor didindeedtrafficinherbsandpowders withpretensionstosuchwonderful magicpropertiesasmyfriendhaddescribed.Thestreetwaslongandnarrow,andhadanairofantiquityabout it.Sureenough,therewastheplace faithfultothedescription,abouthalf wayalong.Istoodgazingatitfrom theoppositesideoftheroad.Itwas difficulttotellatadistancewhatkind ofshopitwas;Ifeltthatitoughttobe achemist's,butwhenIcrossedthe roadtomakeacloserinspectionI foundthatthewindowdisplayeda medleyofarticlesfarremovedfrom chemistry,ofwhichthegreaterpart appearedtobebooksandpost-cards.
Frombeneathhiscoatheproduceda collectionofbooksandpamphlets, boundtogetherwothathickstring. Ittookhimsomeminutestounitethe knots,rridthisgavemeanopportanityoftakingnoteofhint. Hewashatless,andhisheadwas coveredwithanabundanceofthick, blackhair;hehadalsoacurly,black beardtrimmedtoapoint.Hisskin hadapeculiaryellowishcolourwhich mayhavebeenthereasonwhyhis eyesseemedtomeunusuallybright andprominent,andhisteethbeautifullywhite.Hisclothesfittedhimbadly,andwereofadarkgreymaterial; heworearedtieand,oddlyenough, redfeltslippers. "Ah,hereweare,"heresumed,holdingupaslenderperiodicalinagreen coverwithMysticReviewprintedat thetop.''Thisisapublicationfor moreadvancedstudents.Manyofmy friendsarenumberedamongthecontributors,andarticleshaveoccasionallyappearedfrommyownpen.But thesearemoresuitableforthebeginner." Hehandedmeabouthalf-a-dozen pamphlets.SeveralwereinFrench, andboresuchtitlesasL'EtudedeDemonologie,CultedeSatan,Soireesdes Enfers.Hewasquiteright,Ihad neversomuchasheardofsuchbooks. Iglanceduponceortwiceas1went throughthecollection,andfoundhim watchingmeintentlywithamischievoussmileonhislips."Theyarecertainlyveryweird,"1said,givingthem back.Thissethimoffagain."There aremanymethodsofgettingintouch withtheMaster,"hewenton;"but thereisonewhich1favourmyselfand amaccustomedtorecommendtomy pupils.Itisnotthemostsimpleor direct,Imustadmit,andithasthe disadvantageofbeingatrifledangerousinclumsyhands,butitisalways effective,andproducesthemostsatisfactoryresults.Certainsecretherbs andpowdersmustbeboiledinaglass vesseloverapowerfulspiritlamp.The directionsmustbefollowedwithscrupulousexactitude,otherwisethereis dangerofconflagrations;evenapart fromthisitisnecessarytoanointthe faceandhandswithanOrientalpreparationasaprotectionagainstscaldingorscorching.Thecauldronmust bestirredforabouthalfanhourwith ag;assroduntilthewowbecomesfull
