TheadvanceofaBritisharmyfrom EgyptintoPalestinemaybetermeda newcrusadefortheliberationof Jerusalem.Itappearsthatthereisa definiteagreementbetweentheBritish Governmentandtheleadershipof Jewishthoughtastothefutureofthe ancientlandoftheHebrews.Itisthe hopeofEnglishstudentsofthisproblemthatwhenthegreatwarisended alltheAlliednationswillbewilling toagreetoasolutionsatisfactoryto theBritishEmpireandtotheJewsall overtheworld. Thesolution-asthegreatmassof JewsinEngland.atleast,believe-will befoundintheestablishmentofan autonomousdependencyoftheBritish EmpirewithJerusalemasitscapital. MostoftheJewswouldpreferBritish allegiance,becauseEngland.eversince theMiddleAges,hastreatedtheirrace fairly,andbecausetheBritishEmpire standsforlibertyandjustice.England wasfirstamongWesternnationsto givetheJewrealemancipation;she hasneverdevelopedthatdislikeofthe Jewwhichhasmanifesteditselfin manyothercountries;shehasdemon-atedhercapacitynotonlytoget igwithhim,buttomakehima tusefulandpatrioticcitizen.Eng!andAmericahavesucceededalike alongsimilarlineswiththeJews; theJewsnaturallyrealisetheir theAnglo-;:4ixancounteies. Politically,theBritishEmpire;las strongreasonsfordesiringarehabilitatedPalestinedominatedbyJewsand underBritishsuzerainty.Manifestly theWesternnationsaredetermined thattheTurkishEmpiremustbe ended.sinceshehassolongpersistently refusedtobemended.Solongas Turkish_dominionoversouth-western Asiacontinuesinanythinglikeits presentform,itwillbeaconstant menacetotheSuezCanalandtothe routebetweenEuropeandIndia.
ThereisnohopethatunderTurkish rulethegreatregionbetweenthePersianGulfandtheMediterraneanwhichisbynomeansahopelessdesert -canbedevelopedsuccessfully. Ontheotherhand.theJewsthemselveshaveestablishedmanyprosperousandsuccessfulcoloniesintheir raldhomeland.Thebestauthorities declarethatthewell-wateredplainsof theEuphratesandTigris,withtheir richsoilandsub-tropicalclimate,could berestoredtoaproductivenesscornparabletothatofthegreatcentral valleyoftheUnitedStates.
ARehabilitatedPalestine, TheprojectforarehabilitatedPalestine,asitisnowtakingform,doesnot contemplateastrictlyJewishState. Rather,itlookstobetheestablishmentofPalestineasaBritishdependency,inwhichtheArabs.the%Jews, andtheChristianswilllivetogether onequalterms.andinwhichthesecularpowerwillbekeptsupreme. Noteventhemostenthusiasticof Zionistshasinmindtheestablishment ofaStateinwhichthechurchwould dominate.Inmattersofreligion,modernJewsareamongthemosttolerant ofpeoples,andlittlefearisentertainedthattheywouldattempttoimpose theirfaithupontheirimmediateneighbours.

ThereisnoequivocationinthepronouncementsofEnglishpublicistson thispoint.Theyhavebeenrather startlinglyoutspokeninsomedetails. Itisabsolutelynecessary,theyinsist, forthefuturesecurityoftheEmpire thata-Stateshouldbeestablishedin thisgreatregiononwhichGreatBritainmayrelyforco-operationand friendshipinprotectingSuezandthe routetotheFarEast.Theremustbe aguaranteeagainsttheextensionof Germanmilitarypoweralongtheroute fromBerlintoBagdad.
Egypt,sincethewarbegan,hasbeen formallytakenoverasaBritishdominion.India,Aden,Suez,Cyprus, Malta,Gibraltar,allpoint,asEnglishmenseeit,tothenecessitythatthis cornerofAsiashallbeheldfirmly underBritishcontrol.
WhileBritishImperialpurposesand thegeneraldesireoftheJewishpeople coincideinthisprogramme,thereisno thoughtofattemptingtoherdallthe world'sHebrewsbackintoPalestine. Thatwouldbeanutterimpossibility, formanyreasonswhicharetooclear toneedexplanation;butthereareal-
achaicefordevelopment,denyhim thepoorprivilegeofmisgoverning eitherlaa,;o,Vorotherp-zoples,andin afewgenerationstheTurkmighthea verydifferentfigureintheworld.
TheJews,duringtheirlongexile, havelearnedthingsthattheTurkmust learnifheistomaintainhereaftera definiteidentityamongtheworld's peoples.AnewPalestinewouldnot meanarevivalofthetheocraticJerusalemoftheOldTestament;itwould beanenlightenedandprogressive State,withmodernpoliticalideasand Institutions.Thechurchwouldbepreserved,andwouldbeamostusefulinfluence;butitssphereofusefulness andactivitywouldbesecondaryto thatoftheState,anditwouldnotintrudeitselfintopolitics.
Almostevery theJewsandthe Mohammedanshavegotalongtogether ratherbetterthaneitherofthemhas gotalongwithotherpeoples.Mohammed,whowouldhavebeenaremarkablysuccessfulpoliticianifhehadlived inthesetimes,believedthattheJews, whowerenumerousinArabia.ought toallythemselveswithhisempireand takepartinhiscrusade.Theydidn't respondtohisapproaches,butpersecutionoftheJewswasneverwidespreadunderMohammedanrule.
ConflictingClaimsintheEast. Ofcourse,therewillbeconflicting interestsandclaimswhenitcomesto theestabliihmentoftheneworderin Palestine.Forexample,information comesfromRomethatthePoperegardswithnosmallconcerntheadvanceoftheBritishforcestoward Jerusalem,andtheseemingprobability thattheywillultimatelytakethecity. TheVaticanisrepresentedasfeeling thatitcannotremainindifferentinthe settlementofthefuturestatusofthe HolyLand.Itisunderstoodtohave alreadyinitiatednegotiationswiththe EuropeanPowers,inorderthatthe rightsoftheCatholicChurchshallbe safeguarded.
Italy,Spain,andFranceallhave claimsoverPalestinewhicharerecognisedbytheHolySee.Thetitleof KingofJerusalemiscontestedbetweenthesovereignsofItalyandof Spain,bothofwhomclaimtohaveinheritedfromRobert.KingofNaples. Thistitleimpliespatronageoverthe HolyLandandcertainprerogatives whicharestillrecognised,thoughin abeyance.
Franceclaimsageneralprotectorate ofChristiansintheOrient,whichhas longbeenrecognisedbytheTurkish Government,bytheHolySee,andby theEuropean-Powersthatsignedthe treatyofBerlinin1878,includingeven GermanyandAustria.Thus,thereis inevitablyatendencyinCatholiccountriestoopposeProtestantcontrolover theHolyLand.
ItisunderstoodthatthePope's effortsarenowbeingdirectedtoward securingfromtheBritishGovernment formalassurancesthatthefinalsettlementofallquestionsrelatingtothe HolyLandshallbepostponeduntil afterthewar,sothattherightsofall nationscanbesafeguardedandinternationalsanctionobtained.TheVaticanhopesthatEnglandwillacceptits suggestionthataspecialconference, separatefromthatwhichshallmake thegeneralpeace,shouldbeconstitutedtosettlethefutureadministration oftheHolyLandunderarathernominalBritishprotectorate.,

Arabia'scontributionstotheworld's culture,representedbytheinvention oftheArabicsystemofnotationand numeration,thedevelopmentofthe alphabet,thedevelopmentoftherudimentsofastronomy,thepositivegenius. oftheraceformathematics,andits achievementsinartandliteraturethesethingsmarktheArabasasuperiortype,althoughhehasnothadthe privilegeofgivinghisgreatestservice totheworld.
InthebeliefnotonlyofEuropean leaders,butofJewsinmanylandsand -oftheablestmenamongtheArabs, thetimeisathandwhenalltheseconditionsaretobechanged.Itisbecomingmoreandmoreapparentthatone
readyaboutonehundredthousand Jewsthere,andthebasisofaJewish communityiswellestablished. Itisnotdesignedtomakespecial effortstoinduceAmericanandEnglishJewstomovebacktoPalestine; butitisproposedasthoroughlypracticabletoredirectthestreamsofJewishmigrationfromRusilaandPoland.
Atpresent,innormaltimes,perhaps sixtythousandHebrewscomefrom thosecountriestoAmericaannually. Thesuggestionisthatifhalfcfthem couldbedirectedtoPalestine,itwould mean,attheendofageneration,with thenaturalincreaseinnumbers.a Jewishpopulationofamillionmere. Thiswouldbeaguaranteeofsomethingpermanentandsolid.
ANewCentreofModernCulture. TheJewsofPalestinewouldbring theirideasandtheirunderstandingof Occidentalinstitutionsintoimmediate touchwiththepeoplesofthatpartof theEast.TheArabswouldquickly learntheadvantagesof'archinstitutions,andthusthenewPalestinewould beacentrefromwhich,underthemost favourableauspices,theidealsofWest. ernculturewouldradiatecutoverall south-easternAsia.
PerhapseventheTurkwouldin timebecomeausefulcitizenoftile world.Heisnotaltaget.l..eranundesirablefellowasitis.Thiswarhasdemonstrated-if,indeed,proofwasneeded-thatheisagoodsoldierandhas someideasofsportsmanship;butheis hopelesslyincapab'cofgovernmental administration.Givehisbestqualities
Inthetimeofthemoremodern gloryoftheMesopotamianworld,underthecalifsofBagdadandtheir successors,andintheSpanishpeninsuladuringtheperiodofSaracenpower there,theJewswerefarbettertreated thaninmostoftheEuropeancountries,andattaineddistinguishedpower andinfluence.
Far-seeingJewsandwiseinternationalists,believethattheyseeinthis ideaofarehabilitatedPalestinethe possibilityofdoingtheworldoneof thegreatestservicesthatwillfollow thepresentwar.Theprojecthasa specialinteresttoAmerica,becausein recenttimestheUnitedStateshasbeen thepromisedlandofJewsalmostall overtheworld.
Onefactorinthequestionisthe probabilitythathereaftertheRussian Jewswillhavelessdesiretoemigrate toAmerica.Therevolutionhasputthe Jewonanewpoliticalfootingthere. Theremaybeforatime,asaresultof thedeep-seatedreligiousprejudice, somecontinuationofpersecutionand ostracism;butitwillbesocialfrom thistimeforth,ratherthanpolitical. TheJewsarethemostcosmopolitan ofraces.TheyareathomeintheEast andtheWest;inBagdadandinNew York.Re-establishedinhisoldhomeland,theJewwouldbecomeintimea pointofcontactbetweenthecultures ofEastandWest,apivotonwhichthe civilisationoftheeasternMediterraneanbasinwouldturntowardthehigheraspirationsandthebetterlightofa newday.

Theyoungmenwhowerestudents from1895to1910arenowmaturemen. zealouspriests,onthemission,orpro- fessorsintheirAlmaMaterandother colleges.Fromthisbodyhastheidea oftheMaynoothMissiontoChina come.Studentsofthepasttheycould notforgetorbanishthepresentand future.Thesestudieswerenotthoseof thereclusemerely;theyresolvedtodo somethingthatwouldmaketheIreland ofthepastliveagain:and.being priests,theirchoicelaybutinonedirection.
SohastheMaynoothMissionbeen born.Maynoothisagreatinstitution: aprofessorshipthereisanhonourable positionandobtainedonlyafterrigourousandcompetitiveexaminations.Irelandisnowaninterestingcountry. Itholdsmanyallurementsforthe youngmanofeducation,forthenext scoreofyearsareboundtobeoneof themostinterestingandfascinating periodsinIrishhistory.Itistobethe climaxofcenturiesofagitationand nationalstriving.Butdownstepsone ofthemostbrilliantofMaynooth's professorsfromhischairinthegreat institution,turnshisbackonallthese legitimateallurementsandcallsfoe recruitsforamissiontoChina.

ThepreparationsforSt.Patrick's Dayareproceedingapace,andpromise anunprecedentedcelebration.Prominentwillbethepresentationofalarge numberoftableauxvivants,whichwill beadmirablefortheirartistic,patriotic andhistoricdisplay.Themotorcar processionwillalsobeadistinguishing feature,andthehappypossessorsof automobilesshouldseethattheyget aplaceinthememorablemotorshow.
Itis.pleasingtofindthatallthe schoolshavebegunthenewyearwithever-increasingnumbers.Thesecondaryschoolsinparticularhaveopened withanunusuallylargeaccessionto theirclasses.Theadmirableresultsof lastyear'sexaminationshavealready beguntobearfruit,evenamongstnonCatholicparents.

ByE.T.Raymond, Mr.Cilesterton's"ShortHistoryof England"isnotsomuchabookasa battue.Disregardingthemercifulmoral "ofthetaleofthebackwoodspianist,he shootshis-authoritiesbecausetheydid theirbest.Theonlyhistorianforwhom heexpressesrespectis,naturallyenough,notarecognisedhistorian-Cobbett.Ofthelate-lamentedGreenhe speaksinmuchthesametermsasof "PottedPeriods,orTwoThousand YearsofOurIslandStoryinTwentysevenSevenpennyParts:"andseems torecogniselittleessentialdifference betweenthetwo.Perhapsthereisn't much.
"Whatwecallthepopularhistories shouldratherbecalledtheanti-popu- larhistories,"saysMr.Chesterton. Personally,Iratherwishhehadset outtosupplytherealwantheindicates.Icanimaginehimproducinga mostfascinatingnarrative.Hispresent workis,ofcourse,hardlyahistory.It isratheramagazineofhighexplosive denials,andamineofshrewdsugges- tion;aboisterousandrebelliousCalve onan.armyofdeadandgoneLittletons.
NotaHistoryforLittleArthur. Ihavereadthebookwithinfinite content,butIoanimaginesomehonest personbuyingitasahandytextbook, andfeelinglikethatprogressivebrewer whoinvestedinKingsley's"Yeast." Smallwonderthatthecriticshave mostlyagreedthatthethingisajoke. A"history"withoutafootnoteand withonesOlitarydateisclearlynotthe realthing.Theseriousstudentwill complainthatourold'friendtheWitan isnotevenmentioned,northeBillof Rights,northe-StatuteofPremunire, norJenkinsear.Onthelighterside thereisnothingaboutAlfred'scakes, andlittleaboutAlfredhimself.Onthe otherhand,wehavequiteaconsiderabledigressionontheuseof"Mister" and''Esquire."
Howcansuchathingbeahistory- evenforLittleArthur?Thenthegreat Victorianera(when,asveryoneknows, civilisationbegan),isintroducedbya flippantparableabouttop-hatsand trousers,andweactuallyreadthat'the mostimportantthingthathappenedin theVictoriantimewasthatnothing happened.
TheTruthAbouttheVictorianEra. Thatisprofoundlytrue,ofcourse. Kinglakenotwithstanding.Exclude thingsthathappenedtothecolonies andthingsthathappened-steamenginesandthelike-toeverybody,and thereisastonishinglylittleoneneed knowofthose60yearsofmerelyhardeningtendencies.
InEuropewekepttheringfor Prussia,thelustyyoungbullyandenslaver,andguardedthebedsideof Turkey,theinvalidbullywithmutinousslaves;athometheprocessofindustrialismwasquietlyandalmost peacefullyconcluded.Therewassome traceoftheyeomanandthefree craftsmanwhenVictoriaascendedthe throne:thetriumphantbossandlandlord,andthedispossessedproletarian, withtheirappurtenances,onlyremainedatherdeath.

Again,"theslavebecametheserf; thatis,hecouldbeshutin,butnot shutout. Hisstatusbeganto haveroots,andwhateverhasrootswill haverights."
Herewehavethevitaltruthofthat slowbutverysureprocesswhichtransformedthepaganslaveestatetosomethingresemblingafreepeasantry-unhappilynotdestinedtoestablishitself permanentlyinEngland.
Thewholegreatbusinessisanonymous,likethebuildingoftheCathedrals andtheotherwondersoftheMiddle Ages.Itwastheworkofnojuristor self-consciousreformer,butofmillions ofobscurepriestsworkingwiththe onlytoolseffectivein_adarkage--,-or forthatmatterinanykindofage; appealingtotheindividualconsciousnessofmen.
ChestertonontheMiddleAges.
ThewholefabricoftheMiddleAge societywaslesstheworkoftheChurch thanitwasthechurchitself.Those whoseeonlylowsuperstition"inthe penanceof-HenryII.,orofhisdisreputableancestor,mustinfalliblymake nonsenseofthewholeperiod.Theyare ascapableofjudgingthemenofthat timeasaracewithoutstomachswould beofunderstandingthemeaningofthe Germanblockade,ortheEnglishrage againstprofiteering. Mr.Chesterton'senthusiasmforthe MiddleAgesisforsomeobscurereason supposedtobefunny.Probablymost readerswillsmilewhenhe,forexample, suggeststhatRichardI.wasnotwholly aromantically-mindedwastrelwhenhe accompaniedthatveryastutepolitic- ian,PhilipAugustus,onacrusade.In fast,RichardwasdoingmuchasPresidentWilsonto-day,andmostgrave historiansaresimplytakingtheview oftheHearstsofthisperiod.
Nosensiblepersonwillhold-certainlyMr.Chestertondoesnotholdthatthedaysoftheguildsandthe monasterieswerethedaysofaterrestialparadise.Nobodybutafoolwould wanttogobacktotheprecisewaysof_thosetimes,anymorethanagrown personwouldcaretoputonachild's jerseyandknickerbockers.

Itispartofthecurseinvolvedin ourintellectualthraldomtoGermanythatnothingisrecognisedasgood sensethatisnotwritteninbadEnglish.HadMr.Cresterton,underanother name,writtena"thesis"onthefossilisationoftheVictorianage,fullof pseudo-scientificbosh,itwouldhave beenmostgravely'reviewed."Whenhe saystheexacttruthexactly,andlikea gentleman,heisaccusedoffrivolity, anddismissedasan'incorrigiblewag, whose"paradoxes"areoutofplace. Ihavereadwiththeseeyesonereviewwhichimpliednoseriouswriter canbeguiltyofaplayofwordsona gravesubject.uriouslyenough,every greatteacherhashadMr.Chesterton's weakness.TheearlyFathersofthe Churchgenerallymanagedtofound theirutmosttellinghomiliesonsomethingeitherveryhomelyorveryridiculous;theywouldcertainlyhave pitchedonthetop-hathaditexisted intheirtime.
TheDecayofServitude. Iamall,then,fortheChestertonian method,whichishuman,againsttheorthodoxmethod,whichisjustGerman.Idoubtwhetherfivevolumeson theinstitutionofslaverycouldgiveso clearanideaofthe.reasonsforthe gradualdecayofservitudeasMr.Chestertoncontrivestoimpartinapageor two.SlaveryfortheChurch,hesays, was"nota"difficultyofdoctrine,buta strainontheimagination." Thepaganregardedtheslaveasa tool,"anaxetocutwoodOrwhatever wantedcutting.""TheChurchdidnot denouncethecutting;butshefeltas ifshewascuttingglasswithadiamond. Theworkwassomuch
ThepointabouttheMiddleAgesis thattheydidrepresentvigour-ouschildhood,withitstwogreat capacitiesofhealthyabsorptionandhealthyelimination.Theyategreedily and'curiouslyofeverything,andthey gotridofwhatwasbadforthem,and heldthegermofstillnoblerthings. "Itisdoubtful,"saysMr.Chesterton, "iftherewaseversospontaneousa society."Now,inthedecrepitageof thebadsystem,whichtriumphedover the.11,islcileAges,wemusthaveTown PlanningBills,HousingBills,tinkeringsofeverykindwithasocietywhich isasperfectasanysocietycanbethat balancesitselfonitshead.'Inthe MiddleAgesallthesethingsarrangedthemselves.Therewaslocalgovern- mentlongbeforetherewasaLocal GovernmentAct.Therewascommunismwithoutconsciouscommunists. Therewasartistryofthefirstorder; butitpervadedeverythingbywhich, andinwhichmenlived,instead'of beingathingforthedilettante's cabinet.
What"Esquire"and"Mists?'
Mean. Bytakingthetwowords,"Esquire" and"Mister,"Mr.Chestertonillustrates theessentialdifferencebetweenour societyandthatofhealthymediaeval England.Theoldesquirewasanincompleteknight;thenewesquireisa complete-andspecific-plutocrat.The old"master"waslessamasterofmen thanamasterofcraft.Theword "meantamasterofthework,whileit nowmeansonlyamasteroftheworkmen."
Theguildwas,roughly,atrade union,insistingonequalityofpayment andprivilege;butalso,unlikethe moderntradeunion,onahighstandard ofcraftmanship.Itfoughtmonopoly byinsistinginmonopoly;itsaimwas notonly,forexample,thatthetrade ofcordwainingshouldsurviveand flourish,butthatnocordwainershould cometogrief. Itsidealwastheconservationofa Christiansubsistence.forChristianmen, whohadsoulsaswellashands.Ibelieveitisafactthatthefirstknown advertisementwasthatofaJew,the individualistadventurerofnocountry tiltingatthecommunismofChristianity.UnhappilytheJewand"freecompetition"triumphedovertheChristian notionofcontrolling"erulutiori;" hencetheprimesavageryofmodern industrialconditions.

Theguildssharedthefateofthe monasteriesforthesamereason,not becausetheywererich:andthewealth ofbothwentintothehands,notofthe Crown,,butofnewmen-andmean men-whobecamethefoundersofthe greatfamiliesof-to-day.
Thisgreatconvulsion,asMr.Chestertonshows,actedintwoways.In foreignpoliticsitfinallycommitted Englandtotheworstofallbadcauses -thecauseofPrussia.
Athomeit-lednaturallytothe modernindustrialsystem,andtothe sterilisationoftheEnglishcountryside.Mr.ChestertonquotesMore's remarkabout"sheepeatingmen,"and itiswelltorememberthatthegreat gallantsofElizabethwereallgreat sheepfarmerswhohelpedtoturn peasantsintohoffielesswanderers. Laterpheasants.deer,haresandwhat notjoinedinthefeastonhumanflesh, untilatlast,aftertheprocesswas complete,halfEnglandwasabeautiful desert,andaquarterofitanunpicturesquehell.
Itwasnolessahellbecauseitwasa comparativelylaw-abidinghell.Itwas themoreahellbecause,intheworship ofGermanorganisation,ourrulersdid theirbesttodrillthepoorafterthe mannerofthePrussianbarbarian.

AnumberofFrenchofficer.:,some officersoftheUnitedS.(a,esarmy,the -GeneraloftheIrishbrigadeinwhich MajorRedmondserved,andofficerson thestaffsoftheIrishandUlsterDivisions.weregroupedroundthegrave, andtheguardofhonourwasformedby menoftheRoyalIrishRegiment.from MajorRedmond'sbattalion,andbythe Inniskillings.
Sonow.whileacrosstheVors salientthegunswerefiringwithdull, distanthammer-strokes,therewasa silenceinthegardenwhenthewreath ofhonourandabunchofheather, pluckedbyMrs.Redmondfromher husband'sgardeninWexford,and somerootsofshamrock,whichgrewon VinegarHill.werelaiduponthegrave bytheMayorofWexford,theHigh SheriffofDublin,andDr.JamesAshe. TheyhadcomefromIrelandonthis mission.onbehalfofamemorialcommittee,whichincludesmenandwomen ofallpoliticalparties.
Speakingtothesoldiersabouthim, Dr.Ashe,whoisaProtestant,working forthepoliticalunionofIreland,remindedthemhowMajorRedmondhad fellenwhilegloriouslyleadinghismen tovictory.Hewasover50whenhe volunteered,andthoughinthelast battlehecouldhavestayedbehind.he preferredtogooverthetopwiththe menhelovedandthemenwholoved him.Inthehourofhiscountry'sdifficultyhebelievedthatifIrishmenwere tocometogetheritwastobebyfight- ingsidebysideagainstthecommon enemy,andnotwithoneanother,and forthatfaithhedied.
WhileDr.Achewasspeaking,IwatchedtheIrishsoldierswholistened tohim,andsawhowmovedtheywere, andhowsomethingchangedinthelook oftheireyeswhenhespokeofthe menwhomRedmondlovedandwho lovedhim.Thenthespeakerturned
imaginativetemperament,helacked theblinddoggednesswhichsometimes passesforcourage;but,inspiteofhis vividapprehensionofthedangersofa chaplain'slife,hemanfullycameto facethem,"throwinghimself,"asbe toldme,"intothetownduringitsbombardmentasonedoesintothecold water,"byasheereffortofthewillat thecommandofduty. Thebeginningsofhislifeasachaplainwerenonetoohappy.Hewanderedatfirstfromplacetoplacewithout muchofsettledwork,butlatterlyhe foundamorefixedabodeatadressing station.Isawhimtherenotsolong ago-quiet,unusuallyquiet,indeedbutgoinghisroundsofthehutswith akindnessallhisown.Themenbrightenedupwhenheenteredtheward.1 askedoneoftheattendantswhether theR.C.padrehadbeenround,andhe answeredme,"Notyet,sir;butheis suretocome.Hecomeshereevery morning,"andtherewasanoteofjoyfulexpectationinhisvoice.
Inthefarmwheretheofficersofthe dressingstationhadtheirmess,Dr. Gordonhadmadealittlechapel.It wasahumbleplacesomewhereatthe back,butthekindnessofthematron andthelovingworkoftheCatholic attendantshadmadeitapia&almost ofbeauty.Inthecentrestooda-beautifullydrapedaltar,andbehindita reredosofblueandwhite,andhigh aboveitawhitecrossonapurplefield. Thecrucifixwasthere,andthecandles andfreshflowers.andonalittleside altaranancientstatueoftheBlessed MotherofGod.Therethepadresaid hisdailyMass,veryearlyinthemorning,togivetheattendantsachanceto cometoit.Inthissecludedspothe saidhislastMassonthemorningof hisdeath.
