TheExplanationofMitchel's Extinction.
TheexplanationofMitchel'sextinctionissimpleenough.Ifyouaskwhat becameofMayorGeorgeB.McClellan, youwillfindtheexplanationinthe answer.ThesonoftheGeneralwho builtuptheArmyofthePotomac foundhimselfonedayinNewYork withagreatnameandnomoney.He hadconsiderableability,acollegeeducation,becameajournalist,andjoined Tammany.Ilisnameandhisability senthimtoCongress,anditwaswell understoodthatahighpoliticalcareer awaitedhim.Hisfather'sfollowing amongthewarveteranswouldhave likedtoseeGeorgenominatedforthe Presidency.Tammanywouldhave backedhimfortheoffice,butinthe daysofCrokerfoundhimuncertain andunfaithful.CharlesMurphyhad faithinhim,however,andhelpedto makehimMayorofNewYork.From thathighofficethesteptothegovernorshipwasnottoofar,andfromAlbanytoWashingtonisnotagreat distance.WithgreatdifficultyGeorge waselectedtoasecondtermoffour years,andimmediatelyturnedhisback onhisbenefactors.Hisadministration ignoredTammanyandDemocracy,and hepassedintotheacademicobscurity ofPrinceton,fromwhichhewillnever emerge.Whateverenchantmentlived inhisfather'sname,hecompletelydestroyed.Nopartycouldaffordtotake upamanwhoseingratitudeandinfidelitywereblazonedforfouryearsin thehistoryofNewYork.Itwouldbe interestingtolearnjustwhatforces turnedGeorgeB.McClellanfromthe naturalroutetoglory,aroutewhich allcouldsee,whichmanyenvied,and whichcertainlywouldhavehelpedto vindicatehisfather'sgeneralship,so muchdisputedbythecriticsofhisday.
